Last night went down to Milwaukee and saw my friend and old broadcast partner, Kevin O'Connor.
Great to have see him.
We went to the five o'clock steakhouse in Milwaukee.
You haven't seen each other for 20 years or a partner.
You gotta have a steak and a glass of wine to celebrate.
as well.
Yeah, we were, I mean, I think we almost closed the place down.
It was about a three hour dinner or so.
There was.
It was really, really fantastic.
And I think the takeaway, my takeaway from the evening was this.
Don't allow life to get in the way of spending time with people you care about and enjoy.
Because that's basically what happened.
There was nothing.
Nothing, we didn't defend each other.
Nothing was wrong.
It's just that, I mean, you know, he actually, Kevin actually has a life.
And he has a wife and kids as it turns out and he's doing great and of course works for University of Wisconsin Milwaukee doing all their branding and stuff like that And so I've been schlepping around up here doing my little thing and things you know But then when you take the time to sit down and you really know You know who your true friends are or the people you care about because you can let yours go by sometimes and you sit down at dinner and it was like it was yesterday
and you can just talk and freely, and yeah, that's my takeaway.
Here's Todd's advice for the day.
If there's a friend or somebody that you care about and you haven't picked up the phone or made a way to reconnect, do that, because life's too short, not to.
And many thanks for another great friend of mine, Carrie Pink, for making that happen, because it hadn't been for her setting up that great show we had down at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and telling Kevin to be on the show or asking him.
Who knows how much longer it would have gone.

citizens to a prison camp in South America.
One might think that would be a little bit of an issue that people would care about.
Yeah, yeah, right?
I think that's a good practical example.

When people are like, ah, who cares if we don't follow the Constitution?
We'll just send people out of the country without due process.

No, I would say I agree ambivalence is worse because of the reasons that you and other people stated it just It leads to inaction a lot of times and I think it's easy to pass people on the street.
It's easy to pass Figuratively pass things politically and say well, it doesn't affect me so I don't care or I don't care enough to do anything about it
And it doesn't mean we'll all have to go out and march in the streets or anything like that.
Although there's a peaceful demonstration I'm fine with.
But vote number one, right?
I've said this 100 times on the show.
I just don't have any respect for people who don't vote.
I just, especially people who don't vote and they want to gripe about the outcome.
I've talked to people like that.

Active shooter reported on the Florida State University campus.
A suspect is in custody now saying multiple people are hospitalized.
Several people are hospitalized with injuries after that active shooter was reported in the Florida state.
University campus earlier this afternoon.
CBS News Miami reports a suspect is in custody after being shot in an exchange of gunfire with police.
Police responded to the active shooter call from the area of the student union at 12 o'clock 1 p.m.
Eastern time.
Florida State University said the school said an alert warning to those on campus urging them to seek and shelter or shelter in place rather and await further instructions.
The university also also cautioned students to lock and stay away from all doors and windows.
Six people are being treated at this hour according to the latest reports in Tallahassee hospitals.
More to come soon.
There may be others.
One hospital said at least one person is in critical condition and others are in serious condition.
So, so far we know that six people were injured thus far.
There may be more.
We'll continue to follow this here on Civic Media and CBS News and ABC at the top and bottom of the hour as well.
Again, there is a person in custody after a shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee today.
Our thoughts are with all of them down there in Florida.
And also, at this hour, according to CBS News, this is something we've been following for a while, the United States Supreme Court has just said that it will hear oral arguments next month on whether the Trump administration can partially enforce an executive order that seeks to end birthright citizenship while proceedings in a challenge to the directive move forward.
The court said in an unsigned order that arguments on the Justice Department's request for emergency relief will take place during the special sitting on May 15th.
The administration has asked the Supreme Court to limit the scope of three separate injunctions that blocked implementation of President Trump's order nationwide.
So to put that in normal terms, what's happening here,
is the Trump administration asking the US Supreme Court to do away with breaks that were put on by lower courts in implementing Trump's order nationwide.
And this has to do with the 14th Amendment, which basically says, if look, if you are a person that is born on US soil, you're automatically a citizen of the United States.
But a long time and now the Trump administration wants to do away with that Back to the story if the high court decides to grant the US Justice Department's request it would prevent the Trump administration From enforcing mr. Trump's birthright citizenship order only against the plaintiffs of the ongoing cases which are seven individuals
specific members of immigrants' rights groups and residents in 22 states.
Again, there's a lot of nuance to this.
And we'll continue to follow this and break it down for you.
But essentially, this is another step of Donald Trump and the Trump administration going to the US Supreme Court and pushing this, not wanting it to play out in the normal order of business in the courts.
And basically trying to call in his chits with, in particular, the three conservative justices that Trump appointed to the U.S.
Supreme Court saying, hey, we don't have time for this monkey and around.
Just tell us, and right now, that we can do this.
And wanting to go over and therefore set a precedent to go after certain individuals that were born here in the United States.
And therefore, whether their parents are citizens or not, they're American citizens, full bird American citizens.
But the Trump administration wanting to little by little nick that and eventually unravel and do away with birthright citizenship.
The dispute back to the story on CBS the dispute over the president's attempt to unwind birthright citizenship is the latest In which the Supreme Court has been asked to intervene with more requests expected get this more than a hundred cases That seek to knock down mr. Trump's second term policies have been filed since he returned to the White House just since January
and several have already made their way to the high court.
The president's executive order of birthright citizenship was one of the first that he signed on his first day of back at office and is among several directives that seek to target migrants who are in the US unlawfully.
Well, that's where you have to be careful about wording there.
Because under the Constitution, if you're born here, you're a US citizen.
We'll continue to follow that.
Closer to home, but still the same subject is from the Daily Cardinal.

Great reporter Gavin Escott from the Daily Cardinal at UW-Madison.
A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump's administration from taking an action against an international student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison whose visa was terminated.
preventing the U.S.
government from deporting him or taking any legal action for at least two weeks.
Want to make this clear?
This individual is in the United States legally.
Fair and square.
In a 12-page ruling, according to the Cardinal, on Tuesday, Judge William Conley issued a temporary restraining order against the Department of Homeland Security, better known as DHS.
preventing them from terminating.
I'm not gonna name the person's name because even though it's in the story, I'm just not gonna name the name.
It's an international student who has a visa and imposing consequences including deportation until a preliminary hearing on April 28th.
This 21 year old UW Madison undergraduate student from India is expecting to graduate in May.
less than a month away.
It was informed that his visa was terminated on April 4th.
Judge Connolly contended the lack of due process time to contest the termination was sufficient by itself to establish irreparable harm.
Judge Connolly writes, quote, given the amount of time of the student's educational expenses and potential losses,
from having to leave the United States without obtaining his degree, the court concludes that the student credibly demonstrated that he faces irreparable harm for which he has no adequate remedy at the law in the absence of the injunctive relief.
Collin wrote, this student is among 27
current and former UW-Madison students and at least 40, 40 across the UW system here in Wisconsin who have had their visas terminated in the past month.
As of today, more than 600 international students and recent grads have had their visas revoked or legal status changed across the U.S.
and some students have been detained and deported.
by immigration, customs, and enforcement better known as ICE.
UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnuchin said during a faculty Senate meeting on April 8th, the university only learned about the terminations after the fact.
This is the country we're in, folks.
You hear all the time, right?
Particularly from the right.
Do it the right way.
Stand in line.
Don't cheat.
That's what the right likes to say.
And look, I'm all for the legal process, 100%.
Here's people that did that.
Here's people that did it the right way, that are here 100% legally, that have all the documentation.
Many of these foreign students, by the way,
are paying their own way.
Less than a month from graduation paid thousands of dollars to get a UW degree.
And now Trump's ICE and DHS wants to whisk these people away, cancel their visas for no apparent reason, no reasons given, not criminals, not been arrested.
Not threatening anybody not no crimes You wonder I mean what what and again you look at the we've seen the ice checklist To determine in Trump's world whether you're part of a gang And part of that is do you wear a Chicago Bulls hoodie?
Do you have a tattoo?
Are you roommates with somebody like this?
Check, check, gone.
Again, this is about due process and following the Constitution.
And if we don't have that, then none of us are safe.

But in the bigger picture, if you look back, I've got a whole bunch of different history books about whether it's the Inquisition or even older than that, there were eras where, I guess you'd say the Dark Ages, where they intentionally were trying to crush intellectuals.
They were intentionally trying to create such, they wanted to create a spoils economy.
Keep everybody starving so that they would be fighting among each other for a bean.
So I was just going to urge people to put together a local currency.
Both Ralph Nader and the old historian Howard Zinn have long talked about local currencies to get you through times when the money is going to be impossible.
And if you look at, for example, Germany between World War I and World War II, they had the hyperinflation.
where the only way that Hitler was able to get everybody to salute in unison was to screw with the money.
to have the inflation go so high that only the ass-kissers would get cost of living.
And if you were a rebel, if you were a person that just politically...
played neutral, uh, you would maybe get monthly cost of living, but this was the wheelbarrows full of money.

of Head Start, a federal program that operates in all 50 states and provides childcare and preschool education to low-income families.
Also on the cutting block, steep cuts to climate change at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, better known as NOAA, including dissolving the agency's research arm.
Not good news for Wisconsin farmers, by the way.
And finally,
A plan to rescind $1.1 billion with a B from the two-year budget allocation for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, which funds local media stations who in turn provide funding to NPR PBS programming, including PBS NewsHour.
and Wisconsin Public Broadcasting, although I've heard more recently they've kind of seen this coming and focusing more on local funding, local raising here in Wisconsin.
