Overall, I just love the resourcefulness and the beauty of this independent film from Ireland called Once.
Yeah.
Just
There are two such amazing songs and there's a great, what I love about the movie, Greg, is this guy, Glenn Hansgaard, finally gets to make his song.
He saves up enough money with his friend who sells vacuum, who, no, he fixes vacuum cleaners.
She needs her vacuum cleaner fixed.
They meet, they start playing music together.
Just a beautiful story.
At the end, when they make their song, they go into the recording studio, they start playing and the jaded board operator, like Dom,
Uh, is back there.
He's, he's working the board and he puts it on and he lifts his newspaper and then the song kicks in and he just does a really subtle thing where he moves the paper and looks at them and then he starts paying attention and
he
starts working the board.
It's just a very subtle, beautiful moment in the movie.
I love once.
And then I also added the Blues Brothers because it encapsulates, uh, setting wise my two homes of Wisconsin and Chicago.
And I put for nostalgia purposes, Streets of Fire, because like you mentioned earlier in the show, we heard that song from Dan Hartman.
I can dream about you like constantly through the 80s and 90s.
Yeah.
But I love the
Blues Brothers too.
It's so fun.
Some of it doesn't make any sense, but it's a blast.
Yeah.
Of course it doesn't.
I mean, my goodness, at one point she's like, he's like, we're on a mission from God.
She's like, don't blast for him.
And like, no, no, no, we're seriously, we have to talk to it.
Like I was like, just tell her that you would talk to a nun that you're trying to like.
You know, it's like watching threes company.
Like everything could be there.
The show would be four minutes long if you said, Oh, you just misunderstood me.
I didn't mean that.
And then you, yeah, but that would be a pretty sucky.
Exactly.
So what's

For me, and I'm actually going to, I'm going to, I'm going to highlight a comment from my Facebook page.
I posted this on there and Jenny Brand, our friend, our colleague here at Civic
Media, we
both agree.
My favorite musical film of all time is Jesus Christ, Superstar.
So.
Oh, wow.
I love that one.
And what I love about it too is that the, the, so I love the movie soundtrack.
And there's a difference because there's, you know, when you see a Broadway play or there's a play, there's an original cast recording and the original cast recording of Jesus Christ, Superstar was actually just a, an album because it
was
originally an album, like a rock and roll album that was then turned into a play.
So.
I love the original movie soundtrack.
I love the movie because that those are the those versions of the songs of what I grew up with the Ted Neely, Carl Anderson, all those great.
I can sing almost every single lyric of every single song from that movie.
And it's absolutely wonderful.
So
that's my that is a great, you know, you just reminded me of another one I like along the God spell.
I don't know
if you've
ever seen that movie,
great music from that.
I grew up listening to that too.
But that's a solid answer.
It
doesn't love a movie about a white guy who saves jazz in LA?
Honestly, I love Ryan Gosling.
I love Emma Stone.
I love John Legend.
We saw that movie the year it came out on Christmas and I didn't really get a vote.
They just all said, la la la, and I'm like, how about I get a vote too?
I wasn't interested in seeing it and I didn't know anything about it.
And I'm sitting in the movie and all of a sudden the opening shot is just this panning shot.
There's a crane shot of LA in traffic and there was something about the feel that I said to myself, this is a musical.
And I just felt that and I was so mad at my family because I was like, I didn't want to see this movie and now I have to watch a two hour musical in the theater.
It's a hostage situation.
Oh, I was so, I was so unhappy about it.
I was like, it was, I mean, it's a fine movie.
It's beautifully shot.
I, you know, I believe Sam Mendes, uh, directed it and he's a great filmmaker.
He's making that
four
part Beatles bio pick thing that's coming out in 20, 20.
I don't know why we're doing that, but whatever.
Uh, yeah, it's every time I hear Lalo and I just think it's very funny.
Cause I was like, yeah, Ryan Gosling, Canadian saves jazz.
All right.

I am Pete Schwabba, sitting upstate from Greg Bach.
It's great to have you with us on this Wednesday night as we barrel through another week here in the beautiful state of Wisconsin.
And, you know, we live in such a gorgeous state.
There's so much to do, and spring is upon us.
So we thought, who better than to bring on to the show and talk about some of these great happenings?
Our next guest is the senior communications specialist for Travel Wisconsin.
He joins us periodically here on Nightlight to talk about what is happening around the state.
It is our pleasure to welcome Mr. Logan Roghe.

Yeah, likewise.
It's great to have you.
And, you know, it's been too long.
I don't know if we covered winter maybe in your last visit, but we have a spring in full force.
It's been kind of a weird spring.
There's been rain and some huge snowstorm, but
I'm sure some of these great things happening in Wisconsin are going to take place anyway.
Where should we start?
I know I'm getting old, Logan, because I looked at the website and bird recommendations stood out to me as did agrotourism.
And now they both sound fascinating to me, whereas 10 years ago I probably wouldn't have had an interest in either one of them.
Should we start with bird recommendations?
You know, spring definitely is shining metaphorically or otherwise, depending on what the weather looks like out your window.
But it's also a great season for birding.
This is something that we're seeing becoming more and more popular.
I was at a conference with outdoor riders last year, and so many of them were hooked on birding, spanning all age demographics and interests.
So we have some great recommendations for places to check out.
That's that's excellent.
Did you say writer's conference?
Yeah, it's folks who are interested in writing about the outdoors across the country and birding is You know high up on the list of what they write about Okay, and you know one one a place that is such a unique destination to Wisconsin is Horcone Marsh Have you heard of this Pete?
I have it's beautiful there.
I know
It's it's on my most visit list.
It's it's a shame I haven't been yet, but it's it's unique in that it's the country's largest freshwater cattail marsh and It's this international wetland of importance Spring is the great time to get out of there get out there because it's migratory season So you're gonna see these huge flocks of geese and duck flying through the marsh
Actually, you know, on a single day in spring, you can see upwards of 100 species in the marsh.
So great for birders of all skill levels.
And if you're getting into the activity, I'd suggest going there the weekend of May 8th to the 10th.
That's their annual Horkon Marsh Bird Festival.
They're going to be running boat tours, bus tours, guided walks, have special speakers.
It's a really good way to dip your toes into birding.
Very nice.
What about the what about the Lake Geneva?
I live by Door County So where where the ridges sanctuary is that in Fish Creek Logan?
Yeah, that's that's another top spot for birding You'll see a ton of songbirds coming through actually this weekend.
They have the annual Midwest crane count So that's April 18th and 19th.
That's that's a
great event to join in, to hike out to possible crane nesting locations.
You can participate in counting sandhill cranes, hear from guest speakers, get the whole family involved.
Wow.
Awesome.
So like counting is, as you're counting and you're working like as a group to count how many there are.
And then I guess, do you report those numbers to someone specifically?
I mean, what does it mean to do a crane count?
getting an estimate on the crane population coming through Wisconsin.
You know, we're actually home to the International Crane Foundation based out of Baraboo.
So they're working to conserve and preserve all the world's crane species.
So it's really cool to be able to kind of participate as an individual in that sort of work, being able to see what the crane population is like in Wisconsin.
Nice.
Nice.
And then there's a place
That's ideal for, there's cabins out there for people who want to bird in the Lake Geneva area.
This is a, it's a cool one.
It's, it's a cabin designed specifically for birders.
It's the cozy Cardinal.
Um, when you walk in, you're going to be hit by unsurprisingly, this big mural of a Cardinal on this A frame cabin.
Um, they, they actually have a running logbook there for the guests to be able to track.
all the different birds they've seen.
They've got, you know, books on the native species that you can brush up on.
And, you know, if you want to get outdoors and relax, they have an outdoor hot tub, perfect for soaking and bird watching.
There you go.
Wow.
Oh, that sounds amazing.
Just like laying in a hot tub with a pair of binoculars, like that's a beautiful bird right there and just let the bubbles take you to relaxation land.
I just love
the word bird in Jaren form.
We're going birding.
Oh wow.
Someone went to college, Jaren form.
Five years, buddy.

That's Captain Good English right there up in Marinette.
It was hell growing up in my house.
I love that there's a cab in there.

Is there a place you haven't been in addition to that that you really want to go to in Wisconsin?
I'm sure given your job, you've been all over, but where haven't you been aside from Horicon Marsh that you really want to go to?

So, getting back to our guest, Logan Rogi.
Logan, I kind of made a joke that I've never been like an agriculture guy.
I've never spent much time on farms.
As I get older and I eat better, I love learning about farms and the food they grow there and all the natural food we have here in Wisconsin.
So, let's jump into agrotourism and where should I go knowing I'm getting older to see some of this cool stuff?
There's a ton of people who are becoming more and more interested in how and where their food is grown.
One top place I would recommend is Leclerc Creamery that's in Fond du Lac County.
They're you know some of the makers of the world's best goat cheese.
And you can go there, you can do self guided tours, see the cheese making process.
They offer seasonal guided tours and some really fun goat infused events too.
They got like regular baby goat cuddling sessions, goat yoga.
There's a goat silo structure.
They're going to be crawling all over in the spring and summer.
So that's a really good agritourism destination.
It sounds a little scary.
I'll be honest with the cuddling in the the goat all the all things goats But I know we get beautiful awesome cheese from them.
So maybe I maybe I would give that a shot.
I don't know.
What about you Greg?
I Would totally cuddle a goat.
I don't think I would do that's the weird thing is I would I would totally cuddle a goat But I wouldn't do goat yoga because to me goat yoga is just like what what why?
What are we doing this?
I mean, I don't know.
But the thing is, is that if that's your jam, if that's what you want to do, go for it.
And especially check out some of the great, great cheese mongers here in Wisconsin, because a lot of folks, especially outside this country, like to rag on America for their cheese and the certain colors, but Wisconsin routinely wins a lot of awards, both
in the country as well as on the global scale for their cheese making.
So I think this is a great thing to do.
Are there any other, I mean, because agrotourism is such a, I know it's not a new term, but I feel like it's become more popular, Logan.
Are there like other things as far as like, you know, you said people finding out where their food comes from, like actually going to farms and seeing like other forms of food being made.
There's those things happening too, that you're working with, with travel Wisconsin.
We've seen become more popular the past several years.
It's pizza farms.
So these are farms I think Pete and I have talked about this before but they're all across Wisconsin and it's farmers who are Growing in raising all the ingredients for pizza right there on location.
So, you know, the wheat for the flour the tomatoes for the sauce The
livestock for the meat and they're inviting folks to come there and have these wood fired scratch made pizza made with ingredients that were just grown right there.
So that's a really cool way to just immerse yourself in like a proper farm to table experience.
I gotta say, I'm kinda disappointed though.
I thought I was gonna go to a farm and there was pizzas growing out of the ground.
Like, you know, freshly sourced pizzas, the subterranean just growing from the hills of Wisconsin, fresh pizzas for you to take.
I guess I'll handle this.
This actually sounds like a great date night.
Like, I'll go to a pizza farm, that would be amazing.
He's
not
asking you out on a date, Logan.
No, no, I was just saying, I was trying to also make a joke, but nobody laughs.
So that's cool, man.
Awesome.
Pizza, pizza farm.

They grow their own pepperonis.
Um,
So it's interesting because I'm totally with Greg on that.
That's the first thing that came to mind was are there weekends where you can like you and your wife or your girlfriend or whatever can go and just spend Tasting all these natural foods on a farm.
That seems like you can't miss
Yeah, well, there's a ton of different farmstays throughout, Wisconsin to I know one in South Central, Wisconsin, Wegmiller farms you can spend
the night there, whether on a date or otherwise, and get up in the morning and milk the cows with, with the farmer and just and learn the whole dairy farming process.
So if you're interested, you can get your hands dirty and get to work on a Wisconsin farm.
I'm just picking up pizzas off trees or otherwise.

I really don't take much joy in and that's camping.
I'm just trying to get the information out there to everybody else.
I just
hope you really
enjoy some of this stuff.
So Logan, I know I went camping as a kid and all I remember is sand everywhere in my sleeping bag, in my shoes.
Where can people go?
And I know specifically the driftless area is kind of known for these great destinations, but tell us about camping season recommendations.
If you're more of a glamper, keep sand out of your shoes type camper.
Definitely check out Camp Kettlewood.
That's near East Troy.
And it's actually a former Girl Scouts camp that they've thoughtfully updated to the present.
So it's just a way for you to be able to relive your youth in glamping fashion.
They've
Fantastic.
Is that something, Pete, you'd be into if the amenities were there?
If basically said, if someone said, let's take everything you love about a hotel and put it in a tent, would you then go?
I did not hear
the words color television.
So I'm getting there.

Yeah, if there's good company, I'll do anything.
I make the jokes, but yeah, if the company is right,
let's do it, you know.
Oh man, we're going to do some goat yoga.
We're going to eat some farm pizza and then we're going to go glamping.
I can see it now.
That sounds fun.

So where else?
Here, I've been obsessed Logan with these videos of Lake Superior lately to keep showing up on my timeline or reels or whatever.
There's a campground up on Lake.
Superior near Bayfield County.
I've never been to the Apostle Islands and that is one of my destinations, like with you and Hurricane Marsh.
I really want to go to the Apostle Islands.
Tell us about the camping up in that area.
I went up there last summer for my first time and just can't speak about it.
Um, you know, in more highly than I could at the Herpster campground.
That's a great place to spend the night.
It's a small, uh, shore side community.
You can pitch a tent on the shore.
They have a mild sandy beaches.
So, you know, kick off your shoes, walk around, wipe off the shoes before you put them back in your wipe off your feet.

Wonderful they have Lost Creek Falls trail there so you can hike three miles to the end of this like hidden waterfall There's a outfitter in cornucopia Lost Creek Adventures.
They're they're taking people on guided kayak trips to those sea caves They're teaching you bushcraft and survival skills too if you're into that and then one Final recommendation for Bayfield County is the cranberry over superior
It's this restaurant that got some fantastic food, but be sure to order a Bloody Mary for something that's going to surprise you.
The Cranberry on Superior serves their Bloody Mary with a whole smoked lake chub fish on top of it.

I have always wanted to take like it's it's a it's a fine line you draw when you say this sentence out loud But I've always wanted to take some survival skills lessons.
I don't want to become a survivalist or a guy who has
12 years of canned goods in my basement.
But I always wonder when I watch these videos, I see people like, oh, it's, you know, it's a lot simpler to build a fire or make an axe in the woods if you need to chop down a tree.
And I've always wanted to learn those skills, but also not like turn into that guy.
So it's good to know there are people out there who are just like, well, teach you how to do it.
And you don't have to commit to any sort of apocalyptic like community here.
It's fine.

So this is a really popular annual tradition.
They're actually celebrating their 59th year this year.

And it's happening Friday and Saturday.
So I'd recommend getting up there Friday.
They do the jazz crawl.
So they have performances unfolding across the city, Friday evening, going into the night.
They're filling theaters, bars, gathering spaces with that sound of live jazz.
The festival is actually organized by UW Eau Claire.
It's the largest student-run jazz festival in the country.
They're bringing in world-class acts and local talent.
So that's a good recommendation if you're looking for a quick turn trip.
That sounds like a lot of fun.
I would love to go to that.

What is the most visited spot in Wisconsin?
during the spring, typically, or at least one of them where people just are drawn to.
We don't have location-specific visitor data, but I can say fishing becomes really popular in the spring.
With the start of a new season, that's always, was that the first Saturday of May.
So look to those lakes, rivers, and streams, and you're going to see anglers cropping up everywhere.

learned that thank you to Logan Rogi.
I'm more of an inside guy than I even initially suspected
because
all of those things he was saying is great as they are.
I can't see myself really doing any of them.
