Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba and Greg Bach · Fri Sep 26, 2025
Broadcasting live from the Civic Media Studios in Green Bay.
This is Night Light with Pete Chihuahua.
Your inside source on everything entertainment from Wisconsin to Hollywood.
And now a guy who thinks outside the box and hates cliches.
Pete Chihuahua.
Welcome to Night Light, ladies and gentlemen.
Let's Friday, folks.
Friday is here.
You made it.
You're here with us at Nightlight.
I'm going to help you get into the weekend.
We got a great show tonight.
Love our Friday shows.
It's a bar ban Friday night.
Thank you, Conrad.
However you're joining us, wherever you're joining us from across the great state of Wisconsin or beyond, it's great to have you.
Lots of fun planned on the show tonight.
I've got a...
At 635 a mystery guest will show up to give a very fast movie review of the the new film one battle after another the new Paul Thomas Anderson Leonardo DiCaprio Sean Penn Benicio del Toro Regina King film that opened yesterday This thing is crushing 98% on Rotten Tomatoes a great director and outstanding cast and it's a mystery thriller with a little bit of comedy.
I Will be checking it out this weekend
But someone beat me to it and I will talk to them at 635 tonight about the film So you'll get a quick little film review at 635 and then at 705 this is kind of fun, too We're gonna talk about movies with one movie in particular that I've mentioned time and again on this show I don't mean to talk about it a lot, but it comes up because some of my guests mentioned the godfather of Green Bay Catherine Lake the producer of the morning show John and Gordy
at WMDX in Madison will join me because it was her idea to have this great charity screening of the film at the brand new Atwood Music Hall.
So we'll do that and I'll give you details on where or when I should say at 7.05 when Catherine swings by.
Catherine, I don't know if you know this kind of right, Catherine was instrumental in getting Nightlight on the air.
Yeah,
that was a soft spot in my heart for Catherine.
I hope it's not, I hope it's that not a blocked artery.
But she's great.
So Catherine will be here at 705.
And then it is, as I mentioned, folks, a bar band Friday night.
Terry Barr, our Wisconsin music expert, will be here at 735 as she is just about every Friday, bringing us great tunes from primarily local bands and great conversation.
Always fun to talk to Terry.
And is she out at a concert tonight?
Do we know?
Or is she just she
says she's doing something a little different tonight or different direction and she's going to tell us on air.
Oh,
I don't know if I like that curve ball at the last minute.
What if Terry just started singing and wanted to use this as an outlet?
I'm
sure it would be fantastic.
She does have a great voice.
So there you go.
Three fun guests.
And I'm going to give you some information on a new film.
We're going to talk about a fun screening in Madison of my film.
All the proceeds will go to Cherry and then Terry Barr at 735 in just a few minutes.
I'm going to give you some information on our text.
to win contest our civic media go for the green and gold text to win multi-state uh text to win contest that's coming up in just a few minutes too we'll give the keyword in the second hour but those of you not familiar with the contest i'll give you some deets very easy to play and your chances of winning are astronomical can i say that conrad i think so that's like better than winning the lottery i mean you have you have a shot with this
Yeah, it's
not
you're not winning mega millions.
It's not one or it's like one out of like 267 billion your chances for the lottery
for the lottery.
Yeah.
Not for this.
I've never won the lottery.
It's kind of a ripoff.
I have.
But it was like two bucks.
Well, that's
that counts as a win.
Yeah, I guess so.
Got a great question of the night, folks, too.
We'll go over that in just a minute.
You know, I have to say I sent you this article.
How bad was
that?
Okay, let's just say this.
I was watching, alright, I read the article and I was like, okay, I gotta watch this video now.
And then I watched the video and it made it worse.
Maybe we should explain it.
Well, yeah, this guy, this influencer who eats, he kind of makes a point to eat gross food, but this is supposed to, it's canned herring.
There's some kind of pickled herring from the Baltic.
The Baltic Sea and it's fermented Baltic herring more technically and it's considered a Swedish delicacy You know I'm calling this guy a gastronaut
I just it made my stomach like just tense up.
I feel like It's horrible you got to watch the video to see how it looks, but there's this comment under his video it says
They're supposed to be filets not a super mess of flesh and bone, right?
Your can was way expired you can tell because of how bloated the can was
And he had no idea
he said
because it was supposed to be gross to begin
with yes, and he just said you just ate rotten fish It wasn't a can
for a long time, fermented Baltic herring.
It's a Swedish delicacy, but it's supposed to come out in more solid pieces.
The guy's name is James Ellingsworth.
And he has kind of like, I guess he has like 50,000 Instagram
followers.
He has a bunch of Instagram followers.
He is a self-described gastronaut who ate this horrible food and said he had to take three showers and brush his teeth three times.
But as it turns out, it was expired Baltic herring.
and
it was all messy inside and gross, and he
ate it.
I mean, you know, when you eat enough crappy food, your chances for having an experience like this go up.
And apparently, according to where I read this, many foodies, it says, have placed Baltic herring, fermented Baltic herring on the Mount Rushmore of horrible food, alongside stinky tofu in China.
And here's one that's interesting, an Icelandic deli-sea compromise of the fermented flesh of a Greenland shark.
Now I've talked about the Greenland shark on this show before because I'm fascinated by the Greenland shark.
It's a shark that can live up to 500 years, typically lives three to 400 years.
So there are Greenland sharks swimming around that have been out there since before America was a country.
and they go like a one mile an hour, they never stop moving.
So you can imagine flesh from a Greenland shark is pretty gnarly, 400 years old.
Yeah.
So, but this apparently what James Alling's worth, this Baltic herring, fermented Baltic herring was even worse than he said.
It smelled like if you poured liquid ass on a dead raccoon.
Yep.
You know, if you want to see my reaction of Cantuna, that's it.
It can't be that
bad.
I will I will like yeah, I will You know almost vomit.
He this guy is a roofing sales company manager who has a side hustle.
He eats bad food
Why not just eat good food?
I know he's like the opposite of a foodie.
You know, he has this base now.
Why not just be like honestly?
Why don't we try some cool restaurants around my area?
Yeah, let's let's uh, let's switch it up
flip flip the switch.
He's got this big pile of this fish too.
And he's putting it in a bun.
It looks so now that I know it's rotten, it looks so horrible.
What's worse is what the color that's in the can when he's opening it.
It
looks like it
looks like, you know, when you eat cocoa pebbles and the
milk turns chocolate.
Yeah, that's that's not
looks like that's not so bad, though.
No, but I mean in in a fish
Can?
I don't know if you want that.
That's what he said.
There's supposed to be fillets, not a soupy mess of flesh and bone.
Ugh.
So maybe the can was 100 years old.
I don't know.
All right, without further ado, folks, let's get to our nightlight question of the night.
Let's talk about the question.
OK, question.
Question.
Question.
Pregunta.
Question.
Question.
OK, I have a question.
Questions.
This question.
Domanda.
Question.
Question.
Questions.
What song is your favorite one hit wonder?
We're doing this on the heels of last night where I squared off against Ben Chan, Jeopardy Champ Ben Chan.
And well, I'm trying to be humble about this, but I schooled him.
The one he got, I gave him.
I would have guessed soft sell.
And Ben did admit for all of his hundreds of thousands of dollars he won on Jeopardy.
And look, the guy has his IQ is triple mine.
I'm not really staking a claim here, but.
He did say, this is my worst category.
And so we happened to just get them in the right night.
But it was so fun having been here.
We took the quiz and I thought, you know what, let's open that up to the public or the couch potatoes, so to speak, and find out what people's favorite one hit wonders are.
I have a couple, and they're sort of different.
Stuck in the middle with you by Steelers Wheel.
Love it.
And a lot of people would argue maybe that's not a one hit wonder because Jerry Rafferty was in the band.
There you go.
Great tune from a totally blankie on the Tarantino movie.
Reservoir Docs.
And that's the song Michael Mann, not Michael Mann, Michael Madsen sings into the guy's ear who he's just cut off.
Very disturbing scene.
But a great song totally fits in that movie.
And it's one of those songs I can't turn off when it's on the radio.
So I love that song.
As I mentioned, Jerry Rafferty was in that band.
And he had a couple hits after he left Steelers Wheel.
He had Write Down the Line, Baker Street, one of the all-time classic songs ever.
But technically, Stuck in the Middle with You is a one hit wonder.
And I'm going to throw another one in there that's maybe a little unconventional.
99 Love Balloons.
I love that song.
I love the woman who sang it.
I remember the video from high school, and they never, I don't know if they ever had even close to another hit.
They never even got back to the plate.
You got one, Con?
It's
a great song.
You can just hear Homer in that throughout the
whole thing.
You're picking a one hit wonder from a fictitious animated band.
It's good though.
No,
I did pull my favorite one.
And it's because I played it.
I don't know how many times on Guitar Hero.
What is it?
Right here.
Oh,
yeah.
All right.
We're being a little repetitive because that's the one neither.
Ben, we couldn't get it.
Well, it's Jimmy Eats World.
Yes.
And a great tune.
It's a great tune.
And that is my favorite, just because, like I said, I play guitar hero as a kid.
Yeah.
That was my favorite favorite song to play.
Yeah.
And it's a great.
It's one of those.
That's one of those songs, too.
You can't turn it off.
And it's so funny because legendary bands have songs that are fine and they had 20 hits.
But sometimes these one hit wonders are just overall better songs like.
pound for pound when it comes to a song.
I like the song.
I don't know if Kings of Leon would be considered one hit wonders.
The problem is if you're a music aficionado, you can rattle off tons of songs.
But Kings of Leon, I think it's use somebody maybe is the song.
And that's a great one too.
It's like not even used to play it all the time.
And I don't know if they had more hits.
Do you know the song spirit in the sky?
But
yeah, yeah.
Apparently
so is
Norman Greenbaum Greenbaum.
I have to say it anyways apparently he since he made that song he just lives in a cabin His royalties did we
talk about that recently?
I kind of remember that That's pretty cool, but rarely you clean I don't think you clean up that often because most of the The money that comes in when you're just making your first deal so I've read goes to the producers of the studio or whatever so the fact that he
Got himself a sweetheart deal.
It's pretty cool.
Hey, folks, our go for the gold, go for the green and gold text to win contest is happening right now through October 3rd.
It's fantastic.
And all you have to do is have the app text in the keyword and you have a chance every day to win 200 bucks cash or gold.
And I did it again.
October 4th.
I'll get it right.
200 bucks cash and gold jewelry.
And you were also entered into the grand prize, which is two club level indoor seats to Green Bay versus Minnesota.
It's a home game at noon on the 23rd of November.
We're giving you a gas card, all the stuff, more details to come throughout the show and the keyword after the news in hour number two.
Folks, let me know what is your favorite one hit wonder and I've got another really funny thing to tell you about Robert Redford when we come back.
It's Night Light with Heechwaba on the Civic Media Radio
Network.
Welcome
back.
I'm Pete Schwab, and this is Night Light.
Great to have you with me, folks.
Fun show tonight.
Mystery film reviewer in just a few minutes talking about the film.
One battle after another, the new Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Leo DiCaprio, Regina King, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, getting a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty impressive.
So all week we've been playing catch up on texts.
I have to say, this couple I met out here, I've been doing the nightlight window fun, taking pictures of people, posting them on Facebook.
And this couple came by, and this guy was in one of those riding wheelchairs.
And his wife very nice couple I got to talking to them He was in radio like his whole adult life and he worked at WLS in Chicago a huge giant radio station when I was a kid and then out in San Francisco his name was Joel Schwartz He and his wife Kathy I took a nice picture of them and it's on Facebook right now if you want to check it out Lots of nice people in downtown Green Bay.
You notice that
I mean Wisconsin we're known for being nice, aren't
we?
We are for every loud muffler in downtown Green Bay
There are very nice people.
So I can't really complain.
I saw this about Robert Redford.
His favorite word was possible.
And his least favorite word was whatever.
That kind of reminded me of my dad, because my dad always hated, or probably still doesn't, people say whatever.
It's like such a big term.
But Robert Redford was, I think, older than my dad is now, but it's maybe a generational thing.
Thought that was kind of cool.
We also Conrad we should get a true crime person on the show because Robert Redford's daughter her husband was killed It's like a famous true crime story when they were students at the University of Colorado Boulder and This guy was shot and this guy's been at large for like decades now So it was I was just reading about it today, and I'm like I don't want to do like a deep dive because I'm not a
True crime expert, but it would be fun to We should have a house true crime expert on retainer.
We've got Kristen Lyrely is our nightlight official gynecologist,
you know, I believe that Todd Michaels has been doing some true crime stuff too as well true as well as the haunted stuff
I know I always think of Todd like the paranormal, but you're right true.
Yeah, that might work too All right, we've got to play catch up with some of the text we have from last night where our question was The saddest song
What was the saddest song?
And so let's read through some of these because I don't like to let texts go unread.
It's just improper.
And our question tonight, folks, is what is your favorite one hit wonder song?
Let us know.
That is tonight's question.
We'll get to those texts in just a moment after I clean up from last night.
Jules Smith listening on WGBW last night said amazing grace.
That's interesting because that can that's a song that can definitely bring tears to your eyes, but I find it very uplifting actually But that's great.
Thank you, Joel Mike from Madison in the 608 says hi hey guys recently found the show not a Not a potato yet, but maybe someday fingers crossed bigger than the whole sky by Taylor hits hard also old blue by Willie will get ya smooches
Thank you, Michael from the 608.
I think that text and the fact that I just read it Automatically makes you a potato a couch potato So welcome aboard my friend.
Thank you for the text Jack from Merrimack says sad a song certainly diamonds and rust should be on the list.
Thank you, Jack Eric from the 608 says dead puppies by Ogden Edsel You know that man.
I don't how
about the song?
I don't like the name of that song.
It's a little a little morbid
Yeah, I don't think I'll listen.
Either way, thanks Eric.
Thanks for listening.
Todd from Oshkosh in the 920 says say something by a great big world.
Will you Google that?
That's really bothering me because I read that earlier when I printed this and I that song is like I can't remember it exactly.
Monica from Mount Horrib in the 608 says the living years.
Yeah, that's a boy.
I'm surprised we didn't hear that more last night.
Mike and the mechanics I think was the
band.
I think you'll know the song as soon as I say the lyrics.
All right.
Say something I'm giving up on
you.
Say something I'm giving up on you.
I still don't know.
Really?
Okay.
Well, you know, how would I play this song to go to the break?
Yeah, that
sounds good.
All right, we can cross that off the list.
The Living Years, though, is that's a that's a really sad song about a guy singing about his dad.
Ross from Crawford County, he's in the 608 says, Ozzie's mama, I'm coming home.
I don't know that song either.
Thank you Ross great stuff Glad Ross is listening Ross seems to binge nightlight and then he goes away for a while Then he binges There's no right way to listen though either way Great to have you back Ross Tyler from Wisconsin Rapids and the 608 says my popcorn pick of the night the saddest song starring Isabella Rossellini The saddest song that must be the name of the song Isabella Rossellini, I don't know that one
Isn't she an actress?
Oh, she is.
She's great.
And I don't know.
I didn't
know she made music.
He was making a popcorn pick of the night.
Maybe the movie is called the saddest song and I just haven't heard of it.
Maybe he's having a little fun with us like Tyler often does.
Jules Smith also says, Jules in the 920, the winner takes it all by ABBA.
Yeah, that's a good, that's a great song too.
Thank you, Jules.
Outstanding stuff.
Thank you for your texts from last night.
Let's turn and get a couple of these done tonight from social media.
Spirit in the Sky, our pal Vince Moranto, who will be here next Thursday night making the popcorn pick of the week.
Oh, this is the one you read, Con.
I love that guy named Greenbomb.
Has a friend named Jesus.
Yeah, that's a great tune.
Do we have that in our bumper music?
We should add that.
Spirit in the Sky?
Yeah.
I have 11 seconds of it.
I guess we'll have to deal with it.
Just put it on a loop.
Chris Anderson says, too shy by Kaja Goo Goo.
Great tune.
That was big when I was in high school.
I love that song.
And that was a definite one hit wonder.
Do we have a?
I'm going to get my mouse here.
Whoa, these old responses are coming up.
What is going on with this screen?
Was this fixed?
All right, we'll discuss this off the air because it's not really that interesting.
Ladies and gentlemen, you are here on a great night.
We have a mystery film reviewer coming up at 6.35 after the news.
Katharine Lake is here at 7.05 to tell you about a godfather of Green Bay screening happening in Madison in December.
And we've got Terry Barr here for Barbie on Friday night.
And all this on a night when we're talking about the civic media, go for the green and gold contest.
It's Pete Schwab and Nightlight on the Civic Media Radio
Network.
I know nothing at all.
Hey, this is Lance Barber and you're listening to Nightlight with Pete Schwaballs.
Welcome back.
I am Pete Schwaballs.
This is Nightlight with Pete Schwaballs.
Actually has a little better.
That's my favorite tag that we have.
Might not be too late to change the title of the show.
Keep those texts coming folks.
I thought people would have fun with one hit wonders Oh, yeah question of the night is what is your favorite one hit wonder song of all time?
We touched on this last night with Jeopardy champ Ben Chan and I thought we'd keep it going and open it up to all the couch potatoes
So there you go also folks coming up after the top of the hour I'll give you information on the go for the green and gold text-to-win contest our civic media Multi-state text-to-win contest with really outstanding prizes very easy to play more details on that coming up Before the news at the top of the hour and the keyword coming after the top of the hour So let us know your favorite song also if you're in the Milwaukee area check us out
Our new WAUK signal in downtown, Milwaukee.
It's 100.3 con is it?
Yeah go Panthers
go Panthers.
It's a great signal is strong ladies and gentlemen, so if you're in Milwaukee Look for us on WAUK FM from downtown.
All right, so as promised all right this movie I've been talking about lately I've probably talked about it at least I've probably anticipated this more
than any film since Mission Impossible earlier this spring.
This film is getting almost 100%.
It's a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It stars Sean Penn, Regina King, Benicio del Toro, and Leo DiCaprio.
And it's directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, outstanding director of Boogie Night's Fame and Magnolia, all kinds of great films.
And this is crushing with critics.
And it opens this week
One of my the people I'm closest with in my life who is also a film buff saw the film last night And it is my pleasure to welcome actor writer and my son Joe Schwabba Joe.
How are you?
Hello Hello, happy to be here.
Are you good?
Okay, that sounded a little like
no, I meant to sound more
enthusiastic Well, I know you're in a car
leaving Milwaukee headed for Chicago.
That sounds like a lot
of fun.
Can you hear me OK?
You sound great.
OK,
perfect.
And I didn't know I didn't want to like build you up too much.
I know there's a little nepotism involved here with this review.
But honestly, you were like the first person I knew that saw this movie.
So last night, we didn't even get to talk that much.
So what you're saying here on the air to me will be my first true review of this film.
And I'm excited because it's crushing with critics.
Um,
I'm well, I'm actually the 100th person to see this movie nationwide.
Is that all?
Hundreds.
I'm the 100th person.
How do you know that, Joe?
All right.
Yeah.
All right, let's step over the burning wreckage of that.
Were you expecting me to give you some kind of a gift or something for being the 100th person?
I don't know.
I guess expecting a laugh, but you know, they can't all be winners.
You guys are drinking in the car.
I hope
on your way
So tell me about the movie Joe what this is like a highly anticipated film a lot of people are saying it's Paul Thomas Anderson's best film ever It's almost three hours.
What did you think of it?
Everybody needs to drop what they're doing right now.
Oh dear and go see
one battle after another because it's awesome really it's so good yet awesome
conrad just left thanks a lot uh... so all right so seriously that's uh... that's a heck of an endorsement why is it so great
it's really good i mean it's it's one of those movies that starts and just doesn't stop once it starts i love that um... it great performances it this has to be one of my
If not my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio movie, he's such an interesting character that every time he's on screen, you're glued to him.
There's some great supporting roles as well.
It's also really funny.
It was so much funnier than I thought it was going to be.
And I know his movies do have some humor in them, but there was multiple times in the theater where I laughed out loud.
It's really interesting because I saw that on Rotten Tomatoes when I was reading some of the reviews and I recently on this show I Kind of said I don't like action comedies.
I think 99% of them are really stupid.
The comedy is not great.
The action is not great It's just kind of very mediocre all the way around but this is this more of a comedy or is it more of
a mystery?
No, I wouldn't say that I would say it's very like situational
Humor like a sort of like a Coen Brothers movie.
It's similar to Big Lebowski in that way where it's not like I don't even I mean you'd call Big Lebowski a comedy but It's more the comedy is brought out through the characters rather than like gags
It's
not like it's like a comedy with like gags and crazy set pieces.
It's just it's just funny I don't know how else to describe it other than that
So give us give us like a thumbnail or a very brief
synopsis about the story without spoiling anything if you can.
Yeah, so it's about a group.
It's I believe it's kind of set in a distant future or like a parallel universe to ours where there's really like a fascist regime that's controlling the United States.
And I was saying it's a different universe than ours, not ours currently.
Um, wink, wink different
fashion.
Yeah, sure.
Uh, anyway, yeah.
So it, it follows a group of revolutionaries and it's kind of split in two different time periods.
So it follows this group of revolutionaries.
And then once they've kind of lost, uh, the regime goes after one of these revolutionaries daughter.
I won't say why that's kind of part of the movie, but the daughter ends up getting kidnapped.
and Leonardo DiCaprio kind of plays this bumbling, ex-revolutionary, kind of higher-up member in the quote, like, the rebellion.
And he has to go track down his daughter.
And there's great supporting characters.
The scope of the film is like, it's honestly, like, it rivals, like, Star Wars.
Like, it's a really rich universe, which I wasn't expecting.
This honestly I can see this getting like graphic novel spin-offs Or you know like a TV show because of all the world building they do and I think that's part of the reason why it's three hours long
So all right there have been movies it seems like a lot of movies are longer these days When I love a movie I want it to be three hours like once upon a time in Hollywood it didn't bother me
Mission Impossible's can go long.
I don't care.
I sometimes don't want them to end when I'm watching a great movie.
Would you put this in that category?
I definitely would.
I would say, I guess at times it felt a little long, but I think there, like I said, there is a reason it's long.
Is there some important setup that helps get you into the story that maybe drags a little bit, but it's totally worth it.
when you get into that initial, or when you get into that chase and that nonstop action, once you get to that, it's totally worth it.
My guess is Joe Schwabba, yes, there is a relation.
He is calling us from the car headed down to Chicago to see some friends and took a few minutes out of his day here to talk about the new film, one battle after another from Paul Thomas Anderson.
So Joe, how many stars out of five?
Man, I mean this could easily be a five out of five I'd probably just give it a four out of five because I don't want there to be too much race and see bias And you
did say it you did say it dragged a little bit not drag but like do
you I don't know I honestly don't think that might not even be fair to say Okay, a three-hour movie feels long to me no matter what So but I mean as far as three-hour movies go this this is The upper echelon of them very
good
Oh, go ahead.
Sorry.
No, please.
Who is the who is the best?
I mean, you got this top level like a plus-less cast who and I hear
there's
a girl in the film who I've never heard of.
This was like her her first big role.
I'll look her name up.
But who gave the best
performance?
Chase infinity.
Yes.
Which what a name.
That's gotta be one of the best names of all time.
You
have to be an actor
with that name.
You have to be something.
You have to be an actor, like a WWE wrestler.
All
right.
She's great.
She steals the movie
is what I've heard or her scenes at least.
She's definitely like the heart of the movie.
I thought she was fantastic.
Her performance, honestly, it's really good.
And I loved her character.
My favorite character, though, or my favorite performance has to be Leonardo DiCaprio.
He's awesome in it.
And runner up, I would say, is Benicio Del Toro.
He's hilarious in this movie.
Really?
I love him in everything.
I like everybody in the cast, I like.
And I like Leonardo DiCaprio when he has great material, is outstanding.
So what else was I going to ask you?
Oh, you
also have Wood Harris in it?
You know, I'm a big wood guy from the wire a big woodhead.
Yeah, and remember the
Titans.
He was Julius and remember the Titans big Julius.
Yeah, Julius He's in Creed wire Just a nice little wood hairs cameo to help you out get you through the week.
He's a little what he has to get you through the week.
All right, so Obviously, it's a thumbs up
Um, all the performances were great.
I love it.
Have you seen a lot of other Paul Thomas Anderson movies?
Would you say this is his best that you've seen?
The
ones I've seen.
Yes.
This is
my favorite.
What other films of his have you seen?
I've seen boogie nights.
I've seen Magnolia and I've seen licorice pizza and I would say that, um, this I personally, I like this better than all of them.
Oh, that's great to know.
I cannot wait to
see.
Yeah.
Um, yeah, I
would go just for what Harris.
You I know you're you're on a Dexter kick.
Thanks to me.
I got through two of the shows Where where are you at and tell people why you like Dexter if they're looking for something to binge watch and we're late to the party like I wasn't like you are
oh Man, I love Dexter.
I think it's an awesome show it part of the reason why I love Dexter is it takes place in the The like early 2000s so
It's just nice living in a better world than we live in now.
Okay
I've Nostalgia for that time.
I was growing up.
You you've said that you
also say it looks different like there's a look for stuff that comes from that era
People just look happier.
Oh the look people.
I thought you meant like
the
film,
you know Yeah, it's got a great look too.
I mean, it's it's a great setting in Miami You can just kind of hop in that and you know, I mean there is a serial killer killing people so if you get past that
a nice time you know being in Miami enjoy another thing that's happened to me for Dexter's now that I'm watching Dexter my social media algorithm has completely snatched onto it so my entire feed is just all like Dexter like a thirst reels so it'll be like a series it'll be like one of the killer characters and it'll just be like music edited to them like dancing and it's just insane but it's my entire feed
that's hilarious
What, uh, before I let you go, Joe, uh, are you driving or is your as well?
Um, I actually, well, I have the microphone you sent me.
I have that propped up on my lap.
I'm driving with my legs and I have the stop kind of wedged up against my
serious.
Stop it.
Just joking.
I never sent you a mic.
You think I send you a microphone to be on my radio show for 10 minutes?
Hey, it's a pretty advanced operation.
That's what I hear Conrad runs a tight shift.
Do you have a do you have a favorite one hit wonder song Joe?
Um, and favorite one hit wonder song.
I I don't know me.
I don't know.
Um, that's not great radio 30 seconds right now.
What does the Fox say?
We grew up kind of in the same era.
You know, oh, what is the Fox say or condom style?
All those are terrible.
That's another one.
Oh, whatever.
Also, another thing.
Hurry up, Joe.
We got to go.
You got
10 minutes.
The B-sharps are not a one hit wonder.
They have other hits.
Oh, that's right.
I
will dig into that
too.
Listen, have a great weekend, buddy.
Be safe
and
drive carefully and tell your
friends I said hello.
Thanks.
Okay,
buddy.
That's Joe
Schwabbo with his review of One Battle After Another.
We're coming right back, folks, to read some of your texts.
It's Pete Schwabba and Night Light on the Civic Media Radio
Network.
What is it?
Chris Katana, Will Ferrell?
Some songs just make you do things.
Pete Schwab and Nightlight, welcome back, folks.
I like those quick thumbnail reviews.
I mean, that was my son, Joe, did that.
But I've had a couple other people on doing that.
That's a fun way to get, I think, listener interaction and sharing information with other listeners, other couch potatoes, if you will.
You never give me 10 minutes to do a movie review.
You tell me what you watch almost every weekend.
And I don't always
approve, Milf Manor.
I'm
waiting for season three
still.
Ladies and gentlemen, you got to be part of our go for the green and gold text to win contest.
Civic media is what we've done is we.
All right, this is so cool.
All you need is the app to play.
OK, and I think tonight what we're going to do is right after we come back after the news, we'll give the keyword for the first time, but.
All you need is the Civic Media app to play.
You text in the keyword after I give it to you, and you are enrolled to win.
You have a potential, the chance, the shred of hope to win $200 cash and gold jewelry, and you're automatically enrolled.
What's
enrolled?
It sounds like I'm giving people health insurance.
Are you going to college?
Yeah.
I was enrolled.
Do you need term life insurance?
Yeah.
We'll talk later.
You'll be eligible.
That's the word I was looking for.
For two club level indoor seats to Green Bay versus Minnesota.
That is professional football.
It is a Green Bay home game on November 23rd at noon.
We will also throw in a gas card to get you to the game.
It's a $1,550 value.
It's incredible.
And all you have to do is text in the keyword when I give it to you after the news into the second hour of tonight's show.
It is our multi-state text-to-win contest and the keyword is coming up now when we text you back and give you the Confirmation that we received your text click on that link and sign up for civic media today or a civic media newsletter some of our social media outlets and you have a heightened chance to win Even more you are even more likely to take home something very special so do that and
You'll be off to the races.
Good luck, everybody.
Keyword coming up after the news at the start of Act 2, as is my pal, Katherine Lake, who is the station manager of WMDX in Madison.
She oversees the John and Gordy show, and those guys who've been on this show, they're so much fun, and she's going to tell all of you how you can be part of a fun cause and see the Godfather of Green Bay coming up later this year as we get closer to the holidays.
And then it is a Barbie and Friday and I, Terry Barr will be here at 7.35.
Man, I that first song she sent I like them
both,
but the full song she sent I'm not gonna say who it is.
I love that song and I guess it's new.
It's a new tune as well So that'll be fun to talk to Catherine at 735 I got really lucky today when I got here most of the time I park in the garage Yeah, but if I want gelato and five extra minutes to save her.
Yeah, joy that is rising grind gelato
I look for parking right next to the studio and tonight.
I got totally lucky someone pulled out and There's 53 minutes left on the meter.
Oh, I scored a spot and saved two quarters.
Do you think about this?
What if they let they're like I gotta go to a gas station quick They left and they came back and you're in the spot.
Hey, man, that's buyer beware
and
they saw me waiting like a vulture with my turn
signal
on like I was hovering like if they would have said that
you know
Today, I had to go to quick trip.
You had to go
to
quick trip.
I had to.
Okay.
Well, I need to
guess you were out of chicken sandwiches at home.
Well, you know, quick trip.
I got some nice deals.
Okay.
Anyways, I've never been to the quick trip around, you know, 4pm.
It is so packed in there that I could barely find a spot like people just getting out of work.
Yeah,
factories probably.
I had to wait for like five minutes, 10 minutes to get a
to get a pump?
What?
Dude, I would never wait in line for that.
I know you love Quick Trip.
It's
a fine establishment.
Oh my god, I would go somewhere like that.
No way.
Well, Quick Trip's pretty close to the studio.
So
by the time you would have got somewhere else.
Probably would have been able to.
Yeah, so, you know, just go to Quick Trip earlier is my advice.
They have the Quick Trip.
The pumps are all taken out at the one by the Pine Tree Mall in Marinette.
We have two of
them.
I don't want to brag.
But the one by the mall has all the pumps gone, but people are still going in there for the cuisine.
Yeah.
You know, so there is a Quick Trip that's getting remodeled in Green Bay.
They've never seen a more depressing Quick Trip inside.
Oh, no.
Why is it old?
It had two coolers, you know, two fridges.
And like two aisles and there was no hot hot dishes at whatever you call it.
They had no casseroles.
No.
Okay.
But it was just like, I've never seen a quick trip like this.
That's funny.
Let's get through some texts here if we can.
We got Mark from Prairie to Sack.
He's in the 608.
He says eating a rotten shark is just an excuse for drinking that liquor that they produce there.
Huh?
I don't know.
Does sharks produce liquor when they're dead?
I trust
Mark.
Mark always has interesting texts and he's kind of a, he always has, this is not the first bit of unique information he's shared with us.
That's really interesting.
Let's Google that con.
And when I say let's, I mean you please.
Edward from the 414 says, tub thumping by Chamba Wamba.
Did he text that last night?
Or somebody did?
He said, I get knocked down, but I get up again.
Plus it's a drinking song.
Awesome, Edward.
Thank you, buddy.
Joe from the 715 says I'm gonna say second week of deer camp by the Uppers and my buddy will says closing time Well, that's Joe Schwabba.
That's great closing time.
I ate that song.
Yeah, that song sucks
Time for you to go to the places you will be from Just terrible But you know, thanks for playing well John from the 608 says American pie.
Okay.
I don't know if that's a one-hit wonder though Maybe it is I can argue with John chance
knowledgeable guy.
John also says, seems like a one off.
I agree with that.
But I want to say Don McClain has had other hits.
But I don't know, you'd know better than me, John.
Edward says, or I'm too sexy by rights, said Fred.
Great one, Edward.
Love it.
John says, bye bye, Miss American Pie.
Bye bye, Miss American Pie.
Yeah, he says, cool classics, still love it.
Yeah, that's the song I have trouble turning on or turning off.
from Don McLean.
Great stuff.
Keep those texts coming.
What is your favorite one-hit wonder after the news when we start act two?
I'm going to give you the keyword, folks.
Catherine Lake will join us.
We'll recap what you've missed.
We're coming right back.

You know, into
October.
I'm
happy about
that.
It helps so much.
Lots of fun still to come this hour.
Catherine Lake will be here in just a few minutes.
Catherine is the station manager of WMDX in Madison here on the Civic Media Network and oversees all things John and Gordy.
Those guys are so much fun.
Catherine had this idea to do a fundraiser using my film, The Godfather of Green Bay, at a great venue in Madison.
And it's coming up.
We're going to give you details in just a few minutes if you're in the Madison area.
That might be something you want to check out.
All the proceeds will go to a good cause, as yet to be determined.
And it is a bar band Friday night, 7.35.
Our pal Terry Barr is coming by with great tunes.
And tonight they are really great and really fun conversation.
We love our Friday nights with Terry.
So we did that.
And then what did we miss, Con?
The question of the night is, what is your favorite one hit wonder song?
And then we talked about stinky food.
Well, you almost vomited just watching a video.
Yeah, it turned my stomach a little upset.
Yeah, it's pretty it was pretty disturbing.
Let's just say I
was hungry and I wasn't after that.
Yeah, I'm glad I didn't watch the video.
I was like, why would I do that?
It looked disgusting enough in the picture.
a guy ate Baltic herring, fermented Baltic herring, and it was spoiled.
Spoiled to say the least.
All right, so it is time, ladies and gentlemen, for me to give you the key word for our go for the green and gold text-to-win contest here at Civic Media.
It is our multi-state text-to-win contest, and we love doing these, and it's so much fun when you guys participate the way you do.

It's fun to put the contest on and it's fun to see people win.
And these are great prizes during this contest too.
It goes through October 3rd, that's next Friday.
And it is our daily prize, 200 bucks cash and gold jewelry.
And all you have to do is text in the keyword on the app.
That's very important.
You have to have the Civic Media app.
Most of you probably have it anyway.
And if you don't, it's worth it just for a quick download and texting in the keyword.
You can win $200 cash and gold jewelry every day.
That's the daily prize.
And you are eligible to win the grand prize when you enroll daily.
Two club level indoor seats.
This is our grand prize.

It's a lot of fun.
Good luck, everybody.
Tonight's keyword is game.
G-A-M-E, game.
G-A-M-E.
So, go to it.
This is exciting.
I can't even win.
I just get excited knowing someone's gonna win 200 bucks and some gold.
I
mean, it's a great prize and whoever wins that, you know?
Don't broadcast it, though, folks.
200 bucks, burning a hole in your pocket and gold jewelry.
You make yourself a target.
You don't need that.
So, did I give you the right phone number for Catherine?
I hope I thought I did.
I believe so.
What did you get, just voicemail?
What's her message like?
It's nice.
Hi,
this is Catherine.
Should hear mine.
I don't think I ever have her.
You
always pick up.
You're pretty good about picking up.
Well, actually, I did delete it last year, but it was me when I was 13.
You did what?
I used to have a voicemail until I was like 22.
I
remember
that.
It was like, it was when I was like.
13 years old and I recorded it.
That is
hilarious.
Oh, you got it.
You can't let go of
that.
Yeah, it's gone now.
What'd
you
do?
Would you just at
least save like a copy of it?
Oh, come on.
I was so embarrassed when I heard it back.
So I was like, you know, I should probably just delete this.
Come on, man.
I would love to hear that.
Our question of the night, ladies and gentlemen is what is your favorite one hit wonder song?
From the 818, Bridget says, steal away by Robbie Dupree.
Yeah, I remember that song.
That's a great song.
Bridget says, love that song.
Listen to it all the time.
Bridget also says, new text, separate text.
Grandma Peg says, earth angel by the penguins.
1955.
I know that song.
That's a great song too.
Thank you, Bridget and Peg.
Monica from Mount Horrib and the 608 says, how bizarre by OMC.
That's a good one.
I didn't know.
I actually didn't know anything about that song.
Or that it was one hit wonder.
Thank you, Monica And then Nick for Marshall he's in the 608 says hey Pete and Conrad how are you guys doing tonight?
Got a one hit wonder song for you that I'm sure you or Conrad have heard it before the song is the bed is too big without you by Sheila Hilton Okay, I don't know that song you're correct Nick, but thank you for the text much appreciated

I think we called it The Christmas turtleneck the Christmas I can't remember
Conrad, when you drop as much gold as I do on a daily basis, it's hard to remember.
It's hard to keep up.
Yeah, I can't remember.
What the hell was that called?
It was like the Christmas.
We'll pull it back
up.
I
still got the skit.
So, you know, that's going to be used around Christmas time again.
That was our life mark Christmas movie campaign.
So, see if you could pull the Christmas shoes, because somebody said that last night as well.
Everett from Sun Prairie.
uh is well as area codes 262 i don't think that's on prairie but it doesn't matter Everett says while space hog is considered a one hit wonder with their track in the meantime in the us they have had many more tracks chart in the uk i saw them live three times in the 90s and they were always amazing my favorite sad song is from the same album shipwrecked both great songs awesome stuff thank you everett from sun prairie 920 says i love when we get like just tangential
920 text and just said Connie your news chick.
I Don't know what to do with that.
I don't know what that means Connie is new here at WGVW does a great job Connie's awesome Whistler from the 608 says great favorite was constant original.
I think the 30-point buck.
Yes, I know I've heard that one Thank You Whistler That could be a whole separate category local one-hit wonders like you got the Upers
Some great Wisconsin tunes.
Paul from Bayview in the 414 says, driver's seat by sniff and the tears.
Don't know that one either.
Thank you, Paul.
Awesome.
John in Madison in the 608 says, oh baby, you, you got what I need, but you say you're just a friend.
John continues.
John does texts like in chapters.
I love it.
He'll do like, they're like little mini series texts.
So he says, no idea who the young man is, but it is rough and fun.
Correction, you say he's just a friend.
Yeah, what is that song?
I know those lyrics.
Everett from Sun Prairie, again, killed by death.
The Hard Quartet is another fantastic, sad-ish song.
Okay, thank you, Everett.
Again, John from Madison says, either way, rough song and fun.
If you already gave us the title, John, if you haven't yet, just give us the title, because that's not ringing a bell.
Tyler from the 608 says always look on the bright side of life by Eric Idle of the hilltop trio.
Oh nice one Tyler Awesome stuff Nick from Marshall says that's supposed to say never heard the song before oh Typo I don't remember what it said now, and I can't scroll back because of the keyword text Tom from New Berlin says Pete the Apple I Can't say no, it's not the word yeah
Love it.
What does that mean?
I don't know.
Tom explain Tom says love it.
Okay That is our song you guys can still get in what is your favorite one hit wonder Mark from Prairie Dissac says the drink is a brenevin a clear Icelandic Talking about the shark aqua to the aqua to bite.
I don't know what that word is either Mark talks over me sometimes.
Yeah, I can't keep up.
I need a Google.
I need a dictionary
Yeah, that Greenland shark thing sounds horrible.
Jim from Appleton in the 920 says, I'm not sure if it's my favorite, but it has stuck with me.
Once, I was DJ for a wedding and the groom kept requesting Tainted Love by Soft Cell.
That's definitely one hit wonder.
And that's the one that Ben Chan got last night in our contest.
He says, I kind of wonder how long that marriage lasted.
Yeah, that's a good one.
Thank you, Jim.
Whizzler for much.
Oh, there we go.
And here's some keywords.
Now, I know I'm never going to see a song text because all the keywords.
Oh, look at all these keywords, Conrad.
I love that people are playing this.
This is awesome.
Great stuff, everybody.
Rachel from Milwaukee.
Actually, Rachel from the 608 says, hello, Pete.
How do we know if, when we win?
Thank you.
Conrad, can you answer that?
Well, you will be texted.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There you go.
Yes.
You will be texted.
And you'll get a confirmation text, Rachel.
When you get that, click on the link and fill out that other stuff and give yourself an even better chance to win.
Great stuff, folks.
If you want to keep texting, you can favorite one hit wonder.
That is tonight's question.
We are having trouble getting, you can't get Catherine?
No.
OK.
But, you know, I assume that Godfather of Green Bay is going to be screened, right?
And that's pretty cool for you.
It's gonna be very cool.
I was I was all excited.
It was Catherine's idea.
I was excited to have her come on the show You know, but it was her idea and it's for a good cause it's either gonna be for like animals or underprivileged kids, but they booked Some people at Civic Media Jenna booked the Atwood Music Hall, which is a state-of-the-art
brand
new facility in Atwood.
I Think it's perfect.
So it'll be there and here you go folks December 4th If you are in the Madison area
September 4th, come on out.
More details will come, but these are the basics.
There will be a screening of The Godfather of Green Bay.
It's a film I made with Tony Goldman, Lauren Holly, Thomas Lennon, Lance Barber, Eric Price, Rob Martin, Mark Borechart.
We had great luck finding talent in Milwaukee.
And it'll be December 4th at the Atwood Music Hall.
I'm also in it, and I'm in the cast, but I also wrote and directed it.
And we got great reviews when it came out, in it, cool news, loved us.
And we had great fans at Tom Hanks Company, and it's a little independent film that got kind of a cult following.
So we're going to play that at the Atwood Music Hall on December 4th.
More details to come.
I was really hoping Catherine could break this news to you, but she might be she might be partying.
Yeah, let's be honest You know, I'm still a little sad you didn't cast me in the
film.
You were still in utero No, you were what were you like three?
Oh, what was the one was oh four?
Yeah, I was I was five four or five.
Oh, we could have Joe's in it You could have put me in the background
I could have because there's a scene where we shot at a at a restaurant in Toluca Lake called patties and
My wife and Joe, she's pulling Joe's hand.
He was probably three.
He's like a year or two younger than you.
She's pulling him and he's kind of skipping and they were just extras.
She had two hands.
She could have pulled you both.
It would have been fun.
Did I ever tell you I auditioned once?
For what?
For a commercial?
No.
I don't remember what AJ was, but my cousin and I...
I was too scared.
They were looking at me and I was like, um, pop tarts.
They're
good.
That kind of made you some college money, dude.
All right, we're coming right back.
We'll try to get ahold of Catherine again.
If not, I have a great clip about good fellas from Ray Liotta.
You're not going to want to miss it.
Tonight's keyword game at G. A. M. E. Have fun folks.
It's Pete Schwabba and nightlight on the civic media radio
network.
I was feeling alright, I'm with my boys, I'm with my troops
Welcome back.
It's Friday at Night Light, folks.
You are almost at the weekend.
You probably already are.
I'm about 38 minutes away, but it feels like the weekend anyway when I'm here doing Night Light.
So much fun.
Conrad Krieger working the board.
Monday night on Night Light, my friend and comedian, Mike Lucas, will be here.
I don't know.
Those of you who used to watch a lot of cable, like in the 90s, might remember a show called The Straight Dope.
It was based on a book by Cecil, something or other, called The Straight Dope.
And it was a column, I think, in the Chicago Reader or something like that.
Mike hosted the TV version of that show, and I was the man on the street and about to take a much bigger role until they canceled season two, which often happens in show business.
But I got to work with Mike and get to know him a little bit.
He was a great host.
He will be here Monday night.
I don't know where Mike is living these days, but he's just a terrific stand-up comedian.
And he was a great host on that show.
So we'll get caught up.
I think he teaches comedy as well.
So if you want to learn the ropes, folks, you won't want to miss Mike's interview on Monday night.
And then our pal Frank Anderson, director, producer of all things commercial, film, animation.
And he's the founder, more importantly, of Wisconsinology.com, a great website that you should check out.
It has everything that's interesting about Wisconsin.
Great history, weird facts, fun historical stories.
Really good stuff That'll be Monday night a nightlight and then you know who we have Tuesday con is Sean Hannes Yes, he is truly becoming like the sidekick of nightlight.
I think so but he's not you know He made this film just a bit outside about the Brewers, which is great.
He's got a new film.
He's gonna tell us all about but he's distributing it.
He's not Involved creatively,
you know what the playoffs will be coming up there when he's on next
The baseball playoffs.
Yep.
Yeah
And the Brewers have clinched the division, obviously.
Yeah, right now it's looking like they're either going to face your Cubs or the Padres, whoever wants that series.
All right, as a Brewer fan, who are you hoping they have?
The Cubs won the season series.
This is all I'm saying is I think the Padres have definitely played worse on the road this year, which is cool.
Whatever stats, whatever it's the playoffs, so it's a total different beast.
But I think if we face the Cubs, we'll bring the energy.
But both teams will.
I think it'll be a great series.
Oh, man.
Yeah.
There'll be a phenomenal series.
Are the Padres that good?
Oh, yeah.
And they're looking.
They're
looking
good.
Who cares about the Padres?
All right.
All right, so we've got we've got that we've got Terry Barr coming up in just a few minutes folks after the news for Barman Friday night Love the two artists.
She is bringing you're gonna prepare to be dazzled That's all I'm saying and we've got some stream texts here, too It is not too late if you want to text in what your favorite one hit wonder song is Sydney politics says there she goes by the oh, yeah Is that there she goes there she goes?
That's a great song
He says by the laws.
I don't know the band.
I thought I had that when I could play it, but I can't
find it.
And I assume that's the right song.
Yeah, check it out.
Sidney says, but to be fair, that's because the lead singer sort of just walked away from music making.
Oh.
I feel like you just get that big hit and you're like, well, do we need to do it again?
That's when you cash
in, man.
That's what I would.
Sidney politics.
You just call him Sidney music.
Those are some fun facts.
Thank you, Sidney.
Dave on the stream says Fat Boy Slim.
Praise you.
Great one, Dave.
Thank you.
Sydney says, hey, Dave.
They were talking last night on the TechStream.
I love it.
Great stuff.
All right.
Do we have time?
Can we play our Ray Liotta clip?
I love this.
All right.
This is Ray Liotta talking about the famous scene in Goodfellas where Joe Pesci says, what the F makes me so funny.
Conrad.
And I really wanted to get, I was the first person that Marty met, and then it took about a year to finally land it.
At one
point, you find out DeNiro, Pesci, Sorvino, they're all part of this thing.
What did you think when you heard that you're going to end up acting with these
guys?
Well, it was just incredible.
At first, Bob wasn't signed on.
And once Bob came in, they said it was OK for me, because they needed a big star in order to give you OK with me.
Marty wanted me.
Erwin Winkler, the producer, didn't.
I just learned.
And I saw him in a restaurant and went up to him and said, I really want to do this part and talk to him.
And he said, yeah, but they needed Bob to sign on in order for it to
happen.
And then he did.
And then you shoot.
And then obviously.
But no, I had no idea that it was going to be.
That was the point, that it was going to be what it is.
It was only my fourth movie.
All I knew I was having fun.
What was it like shooting that scene
with Joe Pesci?
It's
funny.
You're a funny guy.
Did you at some point, when you were in the middle of that, think he is potentially being serious with
me?
Funny how?
I mean funny, like I'm a clown?
I amuse you?
I make you laugh?
I'm here to f***ing amuse you?
What do you mean funny?
Funny how?
How am I funny?
What happened is we were doing rehearsals, and we had two weeks rehearsals, which is unheard of for a movie.
that happened to Joe.
So we were just talking, and Joe mentioned about this experience that he had at a restaurant in Queens, and he said something to the guy, and that's, you know, he said, oh, you're a funny guy, and the guy turned on him, and then all he had to be a joke.
And Marty really liked that idea.
Sorry, but you guys just try to improv it.
So we, you know, for a few times, we went back and forth, and then Marty started shaping it, and then he said, all right, this is how I like it, and then we put it in.
Then it became part of the script.
How the fuck am I funny?
What the fuck is so funny about me?
Tell me.
Tell me what's funny.
Get the fuck out
of here.
Tell me.
I almost had him.
I almost had him.
Yeah, stuttering prick, yeah.
Frankie, was
he shaking?
And then we only improved.
We did it a couple times.
And then at the end, it got quiet, but Marty didn't turn off the camera.
And then I said, you know, you really are a funny guy.
And that's when he got up and did the gun.
And so that was kind of made up on the spot.
You're a funny guy.
That's it, Henry.
That was AdLibbed, where you say, you know, you are a funny guy.
Yeah, yeah.
That's so great.
There is nothing like a great behind-the-scenes story.
And that was on the Rich Eisen Show, of course.
I love Rich Eisen's guests and his interviews.
He's so fun.
Tom from New Berlin says, the apple does not fall far from the tree.
reach the depression era in terms your son rocks.
Thank you, Tom.
I appreciate that.
Talking about Joe's movie review.
Michael from Madison says, Hey guys, I heard now I'm the newest potato.
You are Michael.
He says I'm way more excited than is likely appropriate for the occasion.
Well, that's probably true.
I'll do some introspection on that.
Anyway, the one hit Wonder Song got to be Kung Fu fighting by Carl Douglas.
Smooches.
Thank you, Michael.
Great to have you aboard, buddy.
We are coming right back with Terry Barr for Bar Band Friday night here on
nightlight with Peach
Waba.
Time to check out original music with Bar Band Friday on Nightlight.
Now your host, Pete Schwabba and special guest, Terry Barr.
Welcome back.
That's right, ladies and gentlemen, you know that Baudine's tune.
It's called Dreams, and it's because Conrad and I are in a dreamlike state when this next guest shows up.
Every Friday night with outstanding music, Terry Barr, our pal.
How are you, Terry?
Hi Pete and Conrad and everyone joining us from across the state.
How are you?
We are great.
You are our Wisconsin music expert.
You also host Max, Inc.
Radio on WMDX Saturday nights from six to nine and which is kind of the inspiration for this whole segment on the show.
It's been great getting to have new music and every week and you never disappoint.
So we're excited.
Hey, I have to ask you though.
Do you have a favorite one hit wonder or one you think is the best?
Oh, a one-hit wonderer.
That's our question tonight.
Yeah, we've had some great responses.
Oh, I actually want to hear the responses.
There were so many in the 80s, weren't there?
Oh, yeah.
Well, soft sell, tainted love, as we heard that one a couple times tonight.
I said, stuck in the middle with you by Steelers Wheel.
Conrad likes a Simpson song because he's.
Jimmy Eats World.
the middle needs world.
That's true.
That's a great one.
We've had so many.
Those are outstanding.
Yeah, it's been a fun question, but you can think on it.
You can ruminate a little bit and we could talk about these two great bands you brought.
Well, artists, I should say.
Who do we start with, Terry?
Let's start with Nora.
Okay.
And I'm taking this in a little different direction
than
we usually go.
Both of these folks that you're going to meet tonight and hear their music have Wisconsin ties.
Really interesting Wisconsin ties.
But they are not local anymore.
in play shows pretty frequently, but they both call other states home at this point.
But everything started here, which I love.
Nice.
Yeah, absolutely.
So she, yeah, let's start with Nora, a violin player.
She is a jazz violinist and what's unique about this is she Every every song you hear her play she never plays it the same because like jazz everything is interpreted differently So she just makes up whatever she's playing every time she plays and felt like that since she was a little kid She took lessons from her mom growing up in Manona, Wisconsin
um her mom and dad were in the Madison Symphony Orchestra together and she's LA based now but get some of the names she's played with I mean I love sharing these stories because it reminds me to remind people if you have a dream you can make it happen she is on the road right now with John Batiste
yeah
yeah she has played with Kristen Chenoweth
Oh
wow.
She has played with Postmodern Jutebox and she's played with Sam Smith in particular during the MTV Video Music Awards.
No kidding.
She's not a slouch.
No she's not and I look on her website it says and this is her own, this takes moxie.
Nora Jermaine is the top jazz violinist of her generation.
Self-proclaimed so she's got to be right.
I mean no one would say that unless it was really true.
Oh, that's so
great if you wrote it about yourself.
You better be good
Exactly.
I love it.
That's that's fantastic.
So you sent us a clip where she's playing with John Batiste, right?
Why don't we why don't we hear that and then we can break it down a little bit?
Does that sound good?
All right, very
good
She can search this wide world But she's never ever gonna find another Shaw dressing piano player
pretty cool.
Yeah, I love John Batiste anyway.
And then she is playing with him.
And you can hear he plays and kind of lets her answer with the violin.
Love it.
Yeah, so cool.
That is really cool.
And he with John Batiste, which I kind of forgotten about was the musical director for the late show with Stephen Colbert.
So he's got great credits.
He's very well respected.
And that's nice that.
So she's from Verona.
She's from Manona.
Manona.
All those owners around Madison.
I
know, it's funny.
Yeah, Nora Germain is her name.
Her YouTube channel is stellar.
Every show, all the bands she plays with, she puts it all there.
And then she does a lot of little snippets when she's out on concerts.
She'll go into the city, she'll walk around, she'll play.
Oh, cool.
It's just really fun to take a look at.
That is really cool.
Now, when she tours, what is...
You know, she was with, she had accompaniment there, but is she just playing the violin for people or does she always have a singer with her or other arrangements?
She is almost always very similar to what you heard there in that live performance with John Batiste.
Okay.
kind of the accompaniment to whoever is like the main
part of
the act.
So we know John plays piano and he's the main part.
But even with postmodern jukebox, she was not the main part, you know, they've
got
all those singers.
But when she steps forward to play, everybody gets out of the way.
Yeah.
Oh, that's great.
Does she have any
dates coming up in Wisconsin that we should know about?
Well, unfortunately, they just wrapped up the John
T
shows in Madison.
They go on to Minnesota for a couple of shows tomorrow.
But it doesn't mean she won't be back anytime soon to do a show.
And I would just encourage you, you know, she's another Wisconsin born and raised musician.
Find her and follow her.
Yeah, comes around.
I think we should all go
and support
her.
Absolutely.
Where did they play in Madison?
They
played at the Orpheum and the first night sold out so quickly they had to add a second night.
Wow, what a great show.
I know.
And then to be the hometown girl coming back and have that
happen for you.
Right down the street from Civic Media, damn it.
All right, so let's turn our attention to Dusty Bow.
This song blew me away.
I love this song, Terry.
And you haven't even seen the video yet, have you?
No, I have not.
Oh, I will send you the video.
I'll
post the video too.
Did you send a video though?
I didn't miss one, right?
No,
no, I just sent you the audio file of this song.
Okay.
Brand new.
He's working on a new album right now, which is always exciting.
I don't know.
In fact, I was messaging with him earlier and he said,
I'm not even sure where this song came from because it's really out of his realm.
He is a country rock and roller.
And this kind of takes him in a different direction.
The lyrics are catchy.
Yeah.
Great
lyrics are awesome.
I guess what he was looking for was something a little lighter and funny.
And that's what he calls it.
He calls it a life is a joke is the name of the song.
And it's a riff.
off of the show about nothing
oh really no kidding well all right should we play it and then break it down after sure whatever you want to do that folks this is a great song compliments of terry bar life is a joke by dusty bow conrad if you please
you lose some life as a joke.
I hear just a, is it Rush?
Maybe a little that, or I don't know.
He's got an interesting sound.
It's on his website, it says alternative country rock.
Yes.
That's
interesting.
And I think he took a little inspiration from T-Rex.
Okay.
Yeah.
Wow.
Now we're going older school.
Yeah, yeah.
But yeah, he definitely, when he messaged me, he referred to this as musical comedy.
I don't know.
I can't wait to hear what the rest of this album is going to hold since
this is one of
the first songs that he just released from this new album he's working on.
Here is the Madison tie-in.
Do I have time to tell you this?
You got about
30 seconds?
OK.
But we can wait till
I have to break to it, whatever you want, Terry.
OK.
If you want to do
that, let's do that.
And we've got a
text.
He does have a great Wisconsin tie-in.
Oh, very cool.
All right.
We got a text for Terry.
Robert on the stream says, hi, Terry, from Tigerton in Sean O'County.
So there you go.
Oh, nice.
Your fans are turning out.
All right.
Think about that one-hit-wonder too, Terry.
We'll get that when we come back and do a very short break.
We will come back with Terry Barr on a Bar Band Friday night.
Tonight's keyword, again, folks, is game.
G-A-M-E.
Text to win.
Good luck, everybody.
We're coming right back.
This is Nightlight with Pete Schwabba.
You've got us on a bar band Friday night here on the Civic Media Radio Network with our pal Terry Barr.
Tune in tomorrow night at civicmedia.us or on the app and check out what's your award-winning show called again?
Oh yeah, Maxink Radio.
Terry is the co-host with Rocker and it's a great show from six to nine.
You know, that was such a great song.
I loved it.
You can hear all those different kind of genre blending elements.
It was great.
But what is Dusty Bo's connection to Wisconsin you were talking about?
OK, so Dusty is from Louisville.
Yeah.
is in Nashville.
He was most recently managed and booked by a woman from Madison, and her name is Shirley Kennedy.
He moved to Nashville and has since moved on from Shirley, but they remain really good friends.
And it's thanks to Shirley that I am now considering Dusty a friend of mine.
He's played
festivals all over Wisconsin, so he knows about Wisconsin.
He loves playing here.
He did Atwood Fest in Madison a couple of years ago.
Oh, nice.
Well, there isn't really a roof because it's an outside festival, but he blew the tents off.
That would take talent, yeah.
Yeah.
He's terrific.
And I think he's hoping to get back to Wisconsin and play a couple of shows once he has this new album complete.
I like what I hear so far.
That that's outstanding.
And as usual, thank you again for two great artists.
And I know just fun ties in different ways than we usually do.
But it's a great way to discover some new music.
Go find these folks and just enjoy what you see and hear.
Well, definitely.
And especially since they play here a lot, you know, I mean,
yeah, yeah, that's
the best part of yourself familiar with it.
It's great.
So do you have a one hit wonder, Terry?
Were you able to think of something?
Does my Chirona count?
Did they have any other songs?
The fact that you have to ask that, I think makes them a one hit wonder.
So yeah, that's a great, that's a great choice.
Yeah.
And a
great
song.
Terry, thank you so much.
You are always such a
blast.
Oh, right back at you.
Great weekend.
Conrad and everyone.
Happy Friday.
Thank you very much.
Terry Bar, ladies and gentlemen, check out Max and Gradio at civicmedia.us or on the app tomorrow night from 6 to 9, our Wisconsin music expert.
Great tunes, huh?
That was a phenomenal, dusty, dusty bell.
Love that
song.
Great.
We've got some, uh, we've got some, uh, text to finish
up here
before we get out of here.
Tom from Jackson just says dreams.
Yeah, Tom.
Great song.
The Bodines.
Check them out.
That's one of my favorite songs.
They are
not a one hit wonder.
The Bodines are not a one hit wonder.
Just to
clarify.
Yeah, exactly.
They were the debut album of the year with love and hope and sex and dreams in 1987, I believe, Rolling Stone and, uh, had a phenomenal run.
Um, we've got, uh,
I had some texts here, what did I do with it?
Oh yeah, here we go.
608 says, howdy Pete and Conrad, my favorite one hit wonder is Judy in disguise.
Oh my God, I forgot about that one.
By John Fred and his Playboy band.
Thanks for the fun.
You're very welcome.
608, thank you for the text.
Corey.
That's Corey from Madison.
You know that song, Judy in disguise.
I guarantee you've heard it.
It doesn't sound familiar.
Well, that's because of me.
Yeah, maybe because you're just not a good singer.
I'm telling you.
So we got that and we got a couple stream comments here I Said before Sydney politics said a Dave Dave on the stream says subsid
Those guys are
hanging out PJ PJ on the stream says tone low funky cold Medina.
That is a definite one hit wonder I would say hammer time is to
I mean, MC Hammer was around quite a bit, but Hammer Time was definitely one of them.
And then Robert finally said, and this was meant for Terry.
I did not get to this text, but he said, I took a sunset tonight along County G between Caroline and Leop – Leopolis.
I assume that's in Seanal County.
Great stuff.
Thank you, Robert.
Thank you for all your texts and calls tonight.
And thank you to Terry Barr.
Thank you to – I'm – I'm even – you don't want to count right?
I'm even going to thank Catherine Lake.
Yeah, cuz I think so highly ever something happened.
We'll figure it out.
We'll have around next week Catherine is fantastic and oh Tom Okay, Tom on the text line says is there a word tonight Tom?
You're just in time tonight's keyword is game GAME game GAME So there you go, good luck Tom and thank you for the text as always so where are you?
You got to be excited, Conrad.
You didn't have to ask for a night off to watch the Packers because they have a nationally televised game this weekend.
They do.
I'm excited to watch them take down the Cowboys.
You think they can beat a team like the Cowboys?
Well, they just got blown up by the Bears, so if we don't, I'm going to be sad.
And it's just going to be, you know, what do you think?
Mike Parsons is not getting a video, you know, when he's coming back to the Cowboy Stadium, so.
He's not getting a video for him.
It's in Dallas.
I thought I was here for some reason.
Yeah.
So Jerry Jones said, no, I'm not giving him a video.
That's what I think.
He wasn't there for three years.
Yeah.
Make a going away video.
Give me
a
break.
They didn't do anything.
And he
wanted to get the hell out of there.
Yeah.
He
didn't like
it in Dallas, right?
Or I mean, maybe he liked it.
But he I think he would have stayed at Jerry offered the money.
Yeah.
Well, there you go.
He got paid pretty well
to come here and deal with our
winter.
So yes, he did.
So that's fine.
Where are you watching the game?
From my living
room.
Are you like one of those guys that has to watch it alone?
No, no, it's different.
You know, I'll go and watch games with my friends and stuff.
But usually it's like I like watching it in my own home.
I'm with
you.
And I don't have to worry about like ordering stuff.
You know, just do it.
Just go to the fridge quick.
Yeah, and you're gonna get pretty hammered too.
So yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
I was like I wasn't joking too when I said watch it alone because I remember when the Bulls went through there all their like eight years including Jordan's retirement my college roommate Paul and I were the most avid Bulls fans it would just be the two of us we couldn't cheer with other people because they
would
ask questions they would and it was just this way it
was just the two of us yeah there's a certain time where it's like the questions you're like I don't I can't yeah exactly there's a sports fan and I can't
answer a question
Folks, thank you so much for being here tonight.
This Friday, I hope we helped you ease into your weekend.
Have a great weekend and a safe weekend.
And on behalf of the lovable producer Conrad, I'm Pete Schwabba saying good night, Wisconsin.
I'm Pete
Schwab, and this is Nightlight.
And we are enjoying this beautiful Monday evening here in our state's capital, coming to you live from Madison tonight.
Great to have you with me.
Conrad is back in Green Bay, working the board and holding down the fort.
What am I missing?
Anything happening up there, Conrad?
Not really.
No?
Okay.
Yeah, you're not missing much.
Whispering to everybody to keep it down while he talks to me.
on the stream.
All right, this is exciting, folks.
Listen, at the top of the second hour, act two as I like to call it, I'm going to tell you all about Civic Media's Go for the Green and Gold text-to-win contest, and I'm going to give you a keyword.
It's our new contest here at Civic Media, and I'll just tease you with the, it involves Green Bay versus Minnesota.
That's all I'll say for now.
More details coming in hour number two, as well as Jim Healy at 720 Talking Movies.
Right now, I'm very excited to have this next guest on.
He's been on the show before.
Terry Barr, our mutual friend, introduced us.
And that's how I first learned of the mascot theory's music.
And I just love it.
And they're frontman.
And you're just a friend of the show at this point,
Eric, I
think.
Eric Gellin joins me here in the
in the studio, but I have to say, before I dig into this conversation with Eric, it is time.
Eric, is our first guest Conrad, did you know that?
He is.
First guest of the week.
So it's time to light it up, right?
With the nightlight first guest of the week, brought to you by Chicken or the Egg Photography.
Chris specializes in food, event, music, and product photography for businesses across Wisconsin and the Midwest.
See what he can do for you at chickenortheegphotography.com.
Do you think he can photoshop out excess pounds, Conrad?
I think he could.
Conrad has no idea.
He's
trying to make
me feel good.
No, I think he can do
it.
Of course he can, right?
But that might cost extra.
That's all I'm saying.
So, but check out chicken to the egg photography.com.
Chris does great stuff.
Eric, challenge is here.
It is great to have you here.
You were here last November.
Yeah.
And that was that seems like forever ago, but also not really.
I mean, I remember you talking about you brought in a great vinyl album of your last album.
And now you've you've I'm going to show this on the screen.
Conrad, check this out.
Eric brought
in a
copy of their new album.
The cosmic hit and run and it's great.
We're gonna play some music from the album tonight during the interview.
Eric is here in the studio.
Thank you again for another awesome piece
of music.
Oh, my pleasure, my pleasure.
Is that how you like to listen to music?
I liked producing it that way.
This album was very specific to the vinyl format with side A, side B. It was kind of the first time we had created an album and we were like, okay, we have
X amount of time on the one side and this technically 18 minutes on one side 18 on the next before it starts to degrade a little bit So we really put a lot into that thinking of it that way.
It's on CD as well But really that was the okay we have this much to get done and we know someone's gonna flip that record at some point So it was made for it for sure.
I never even want to thought of that.
That's so interesting.
Yeah, all right, so
How was Max Inc.
the other night?
You were in with Terry and Rocker.
I was right here.
Literally right here.
We had the band here.
We had a full drum kit out there.
It was a blast.
Yeah.
We had it rocking in here.
Do you do that often on the radio perform live?
Not
with the full band.
Yes.
It's an ordeal with the full band.
We have to bring our mixer and kind of get a whole bunch.
We had in-ear monitors on our own.
And so I was over there.
And then when it was time to do the interview, pop over here really quick and try not to get tangled in my chords.
But it's always fun.
It's a blast.
So, all right.
we jump into your new album, Cosmic Hit and Run, we have to, you would have been on this show again since last November if you didn't have some health issues.
So you've had a pretty, a lot of trauma, drama, whatever you want to say, however you would categorize it over the last year.
Tell us what happened.
Well, really not too long after I was here, so it would have been around that mid-November, I was having these headaches, these really bad headaches and kind of facial pain and other neuro pain vision loss, lots of stuff like that.
It was super scary and we thought, well, maybe it's just, I'm a graphic designer and videographer, so I work on screens all the time.
So we thought maybe it was just, okay, let's go to the eye doctor maybe.
maybe there's something with that you're staring at screens and so we went and I got some glasses they did not help with the headaches or anything they just got worse and worse through December and we just decided at some point we should get an MRI done just to check out was having these blurry visions and dizzy things and they're like let's just make sure there's no like pre stroke or stroke stuff going on here so
Right around that time in December, we started doing that.
We did an MRI in January and then another follow-up one with contrast and they found this arterial.
What did I say?
It's AVF,
arterial venous fiscula.
There it is, I always get that mixed up.
It is, it is.
So they found that it's right in the smack dead.
in the middle of my forehead and the brain right there.
And so it's like this artery and this vein that are kind of connected and that should never happen because there's pressurized blood and non-pressurized blood and the pressurized goes to the non-part and it can blow up with an aneurysm and that's it.
Is
that one of those things where they caught it just in time or it was like a ticking clock like something could have happened at
any?
Exactly.
They thought maybe
you know, eight to 10 years, it probably had been there or been developing throughout that time.
So the headaches and stuff, we still don't know if that was all officially from that.
You know, we got the MRIs, they discovered this thing.
Four months later, I had to wait and then eventually got the procedure and they went and put some cement in to kind of block it off after four and a half hours of procedure and
And we just went in a few weeks ago and double checked with another MRI.
The fix worked.
Everything's good.
So that possibility of an aneurysm is not going to happen anymore.
So that's fixed.
Just still dealing with a lot of those same symptoms, the headaches and stuff.
And we're just trying to figure that stuff out now.
But
yeah.
I remember when you posted this on social media, I don't think I knew that you were going into surgery.
I think I just saw that you posted something after you had been out.
It was, there's probably been 10 social media posts since I've been on it that made me.
go whoa like you just didn't have any idea so I'm glad that worked out but you when you when you play what does that do like you play music in bars sometimes or outdoors does that affect your headaches or anything
well it certainly was at the end of the year you know flannel fest was probably what we were here voting and and that was around that time and it was like
Fine at that show but really after that it really the headaches just started getting worse So I didn't really play again.
I think I did one show in December and was miserable didn't know why just it was headaches But it's it's not just like your typical headaches.
It's like eye pain.
It's just really bizarre
Facial pressure type stuff and and so I had a couple shows around that time that were not great and it was like oh, but Typically in the wintertime we don't play much and actually our whole plan with the mascot theory was to record an album So we weren't gonna be playing we were gonna work on this album which we did start doing and then this all kind of got Diagnosed and we still were able to kind of work on the album.
I kind of just worked on it when I could kind of
In my home studio with the guy bring the guys over I'd be working on my laptop and just kind of working on stuff When I wasn't my head buried under a pillow from all this pain and stuff So
that's incredible that you went through that issue had surgery and in that time since you've been recovering You still have I mean every sign of life is what we were discussing last last November.
Yeah, you already have a new album out despite what you went through That's kind of a fast turnaround, isn't it?
Well, that every sign of life actually came out, I think in April last year, but that album actually had been recorded two years before we went down to Texas.
We recorded it.
We kind of shopped it around, seen if we could, if there's any record labels, what the industry was looking like at that time.
And we decided to release it on our own.
So it had been around for a while in our world, not out in the world to everybody else.
So when we had that one done, we still had a ton of songs that were ready for a next album already.
So it was just kind of waiting for the right moment.
But then
Um, kind of at the end of last year, we were starting to think about, well, what do we, what do you want to do for this next album?
We knew we were going to kind of do a hiatus anyway.
And we thought, well, let's, let's
Tackle something a little bit different.
We'll set even those other songs aside for now I had a song actually final hour that I think is on the list potential for playing tonight That was all dealing with my dad's passing back in 2020 and he had you know two years of being in the hospital of he had you know blood infection that led to a from a kidney stone that led to I think his pancreas
getting destroyed.
And then it was just two
years of
misery for him.
And then, you know, a pandemic and all of that.
So trying to, to, to help him with the care and, but also limited to who could go in and when the hospitals.
It was a real tough time.
And so I had all these lyrics that I'd kind of came up with a specifically vinyl hour was kind of one of those main ones.
And then eventually it was like, okay, let's try something different from a recording aspect.
Let's just go ahead and
and do a concept album.
We were inspired by Pink Floyd and some of those older bands that did those concept albums where it's all thematically and musically tied together.
So
that was our plan for this even before the headache stuff.
That was what we were going to do and we were able to kind of start doing that and it just sort of worked because we were doing it in our own studios.
We could kind of keep moving forward with it when I felt good.
It actually really helped me
because i didn't have any i couldn't do anything they were like very specific don't do anything you know until this procedure happens nothing tragic and
that's incredible uh... eric gelin is my guest he is the frontman for the mascot theory a great band check them out google them spotify whatever but right now we're gonna play one of their new tracks what should we lead with uh... got a grip is
the one that we've been playing most so far so that
one can let's fire up uh... got a grip this is uh... the mascot theory and eric gelin
to me across the family dinner table separate the truth from fable my brain is drowning loud and free past that salty ocean to me across the family dinner table
to carry it all.
The baggage you buried, it's there when you're raring to fall.
Cause they don't care if you disparage to perish or stall.
The tank is empty, start to rush to the end, and there's tempting to break all the rules from Lady Justice.
His bandits will save me from all the lies and the maybes.
Cause maybe if he told the truth and all our lies would be gravy, I'm going crazy, but I'm sane enough to know that you made me the game is changing.
Thanks for watching!
Welcome
back.
This is Nightlight with Pete Schwabba.
You've got the Civic Media Radio Network, folks.
We got a shout out for our guest, Eric Jelen, from Terry Bar.
Hey,
Terry.
Yay,
Eric, which is so cool because Terry introduced us to Eric and Eric was on Max Inc Radio with his band, mascot theory.
uh, Saturday night.
So we just heard, um, get a grip, got a grip.
Yep.
Um, you have a little rap in there kind of, you little bending some genres here.
I love when people do that.
Yeah.
We just, you know, we're doing this.
We decided to do this album completely on our own with no constraints.
We'll just do whatever we felt like fit the mood.
And a friend of mine, Tyler Durden, the rapper on there had, had actually heard a demo of that song probably a year before.
And, uh, he had actually
really loved the demo and then he wrote a whole verse for it and then sent it to me and I totally forgot about it.
And a year later, we'd pop it down on the album and I was sharing with him kind of where we are at with the song.
He's like, I
wrote a verse for that.
I'm like, oh no, I forgot about that.
And I'm like, wow.
I don't know we've got like I said we got these things timed down
so
anything that goes in something else is coming out but you know if you want to send it to me we'll see and we started working on it and it's like oh this is amazing this is going to fit perfectly with the theme of the album and everything and dealing with grief and loss and
and
kind of the cosmic picture after what happens next so it just fit perfect so
yeah talk about that a little bit you had this
serious brain surgery and your dad passed away without sounding crass or whatever.
Does that make it easier to write material when you're going through such crap in your life?
Was it easier to write this as opposed to like every sign of life?
I would say, well, we'll see what happens with the brain stuff.
I haven't written
anything after that.
All of
these songs are written through.
the lens of my father,
which took me,
you know, years to finally, final hour song was written years ago.
So that one was kind of the first one.
And then this year when we decided to do this kind of an album, I had some other ones that were dealing with the same kind of theme.
So I think it was once we decided, okay, this is the theme of the album, I'm going to write it specifically about this topic, then actually it did just kind of flow out.
A lot of the songs were written towards the end of the year last year, kind of right before we were about ready to start recording.
That's kind of how it goes.
Sometimes we have some older songs and sometimes we have just brand new stuff.
I bring
to the band
and they're not really ready for it.
And it's, it's a blast.
So we kind of just do it that way.
And that's, that's exactly how it happened for this one.
And, and with the, the brain stuff, it'll be interesting.
I think I said, I'm one of my posts.
I was like, I'm sure I'll deal with that at some point in the, on the next album, you know,
right?
I, it's, it's interesting.
Uh, Eric Jellin is my guest, uh, from the mascot theory.
We just heard his song, got a grip.
Uh,
The new album drops October 3rd.
Yeah.
Okay.
So where can people find that Spotify the usual outlets all the
streamers?
We'll have it on our on our website the mascot theory.com There'll be a link to our store our band camp store so you can order it right from there.
We'll send you CD or vinyl
Versions and digital streaming
all that
stuff
and when can people see you it's October 5th You have a release party at the Atwood music hall here in Madison and then you mentioned one in Appleton as well
October 3rd the actual release day We're gonna be at Gibson music hall in Appleton So it's gonna be a blast and they're very different kind of shows that we would typically do We're kind of a rock folk rock band with this album We really felt like we wanted it to be the focus of everything that we're performing So it's actually a very intimate kind of sit-down
Um, we're going to do an interview.
Terry Barr is actually going to be at the
Madison one and
going to do an interview on stage.
We'll talk about the album and the process a little bit.
And then we've got our friends into the music podcast up in Appleton.
We'll do the same thing
on your website.
You have a passage that says, um, where you describe this album peering jittery energy with a little self interrogation.
Can you explain that?
Yeah, I think it's especially with this theme.
I mean, when you're trying to tie in all the songs or all the songs are all in the same ideas, you really have to look into, okay, what was I feeling during all of this, specifically when my dad was passing away?
How was that really affecting me at the time?
How do I reflect on that now?
So you really got to dig deep on that.
What is that?
And then kind of the side B of the album is really more of the, okay, after...
after death, what happens now?
How do we grieve from that lens now when it's the healing part, right?
So it's like, what does that look from a cosmic standpoint?
Where do we go after we pass away?
All those kind of big, big, big ideas is kind of the second half of the album.
And that's kind of what we were shooting for on this one.
So why don't we do this?
Just to get as much bang for our buck as possible.
Why don't we play a song into the break at the top of the hour, then we'll
get the third song played in the first segment after the news.
So what should we go to during the break?
Let's do Constellation Prize.
All right, Conn, get that ready.
Eric Jelland is here.
He is my guest in studio.
Coming to you live from Madison tonight.
When we come back, folks, Eric Song will take us to intermission.
We'll be back for act two.
And I'm going to tell you all about Civic Media's Go for the Green and Gold text-to-win contest.
And I'm going to give you the keyword.
Great stuff.
You can win cash and jewelry and two amazing tickets to Green Bay and Minnesota.
I guess I just kind of told them about it, but I'll elaborate a little bit.
Here's Eric Jellin and mascot
through.
Open up my eyes to see again It's clear So clear I've covered up in my feelings But I was not alone in breathing
It's time for the Nightlight Popcorn Pick of the Week,
where we recommend a movie that you'll either enjoy or won't.
Here's your host, Pete Schwabba.
How do you like those options?
You'll either like it or you won't.
Welcome back to Nightlight.
This is exciting, folks.
I'm very thrilled to welcome my next guest here to make the Popcorn Pick of the Week.
when it comes to appearing on Jeopardy, and also being a professor at Lawrence University, this guy is top notch and an absolute rock star, Mr. Ben Chan.
Welcome back, buddy.
Hey, thanks for having me, Pete.
It's always nice to be here.
I think I was banging on the window about a year ago, and I was like, oh, wait.
Were you doing a bar crawl or something?
Yeah.
You're in here, and you're like, God, I'm on the air right now, dude.
That's right, I forgot about that.
So you, we'll talk about the Jeopardy stuff.
We'll talk about your new position at Lawrence.
That's exciting.
But how are you in general?
How are you doing in this thing called life?
Things good?
Yeah, things are really good.
It's a transition.
It's been kind of a transition after my last Jeopardy appearance.
I'm kind of out of the immediate central Jeopardy pool.
And also my job is with transitioning at the same time this past six months.
But life...
is all about transitions.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
I'm not even smart enough to know what the central pool of Jeopardy
is.
So we'll talk about that too.
It's too complicated.
After we
do the popcorn pickles.
So let's jump in.
Let's talk movies.
What Ben Chan, you're obviously an incredibly bright guy.
Jeopardy or not, you're a college professor.
You're well-schooled.
You've impressed us on a national level on a game show.
What kind of movies do you like?
I like a lot of movies.
I think Roger Ebert had a really good attitude about this, right?
That he would review movies on their own terms, right?
So, you know, there are a lot of genres that he probably wasn't a fan of, but if he would try to judge whether the director accomplished what they were trying to accomplish,
right?
Interesting,
yeah.
And so I think I'm the same way.
There's genres I enjoy more, genres I enjoy less, but I like...
to have a wide exposure to things.
But the things I really love, there are movies that can really change your perspective in ways that not many art forms can do.
I think of the popular recent movies, I think Parasite was like that.
Parasite, I think Parasite's given like a framework for millions, like changed people's framework of thinking about.
power and income, right?
And it's a very powerful kind of metaphor and very powerful narrative structure that has like global implications in terms of how people cope with life.
Absolutely.
And it did well at the Oscars
too.
I mean, it
was very well recognized.
That's a great answer.
And I expect nothing less than a well thought out answer from someone like you, Ben.
So do you prefer to go... So basically, you don't...
Stick to typically one genre you like and I'm the same way.
I don't I'm not really a horror guy That doesn't mean I don't really enjoy an occasional really well done horror movie at times if that makes sense
Yeah, my wife is really into horror and she's gotten me into it which I'm glad for because I think I wouldn't There's so many choices, right?
So it's hard to take that step on your own if it's something, you know Aren't drawn to naturally So but it's opened my eyes to things right because it
You know, horror, I think, you know, is deeply kind of Freudian generally, right?
It kind of is a working out of our, you know, personal or cultural deep fears in a way that often we don't get to raise in kind of polite, polite conversation.
Yeah,
right.
Do you have, did you see weapons?
Oh, yeah, I did see wet pants.
I think that's the last thing I saw in the theater.
Yeah, same here.
I enjoyed it.
Again, not a horror guy, but really solid movie.
I really liked it.
All right, so how do you like to watch movies, Ben?
Are you a theater goer?
Do you like the comfort of your own home?
I would prefer the theater, but probably the ratio is nine to one home to theater.
I went to grad school at UCLA in Los Angeles.
And sometimes people ask me, like, oh, do you miss things about Los Angeles?
And there are a couple of things I miss.
But the number one thing that comes to mind is that they still have a lot of beautiful single screen theaters.
And they do, you know, nice restored prints.
And because it's a film town, you'll go to like a Saturday revival of Meet Me in St.
Louis and the theater will be full at 10 a.m.
And you might be sitting next to like Jason Siegel and you know, it's a bunch of film editors.
Yeah.
and they're super, you know, they're great audiences.
They're super appreciative.
And then sometimes you might get, you know, somebody who did the casting for a 1960 show, be in the audience and do Q&A after.
That's
really-
I'm totally with you.
One of my best experiences, or when my wife and kids would leaving back to the Midwest, and I was out there alone, I would take full advantage in terms of going to movies.
And I remember specifically, I saw Mission Impossible 3, I think it was 9 a.m.
at a Hollywood
theater, I get
coffee.
I saw Collateral in the morning.
I saw South Park with my buddy Mike Siegel.
Yeah, you can see anything almost any time of day.
And that is something I
do.
In the full theater too, right?
In the full theater, yeah.
And that's, it's nice to watch with other people.
Absolutely.
All right, so what is your favorite snack?
Let's say you're in the theater.
What kind of snacks do you go for?
Ooh, I like everything, you know.
Usually, money is the
impediment.
It's like these prices.
Oh, it's insane.
But that's a good question.
I mean, the first thing that pops in mind is, you know.
pretzel bites, pretzel bites with some nacho cheese.
With some cheese, oh man, I
wish I didn't like that.
It's so, so
bad.
And nachos too, like that
cheese is what it is.
Yeah, if
they would just
sprinkle shredded cheese on there and heat it up, it'd be different, but
I
don't know what the hell I'm eating when I'm eating nacho cheese.
I wish they had more, you know, I'm a big caramel corn fan, right?
So I'm kind of surprised that more theaters don't have that.
Actually that's,
One of the things the Arclight Theater in L.A.
was famous for, they had like fresh made caramel corn.
And love that you know these L.A.
theaters.
That's where I
saw collateral's at the Arclight.
I don't think it's open anymore.
Or was it the Cinerama dome?
I think Cinerama.
Yeah.
Oh, that's a great, all right.
So you're not fussy when it comes to staying.
What about at home?
Do you watch it?
Do you make different snacks when you're at home?
We used to make popcorn.
One of the things, if any,
Listeners have tips on dealing with dogs, two dogs in the house who are research guarding and getting into arguments about that.
So we can't have snacks on the couch anymore because they might have a disagreement about who gets to be closer to the human snacks.
But at home, I've actually, that's been one of the things I talked about.
I've been attending to a lot of deferred maintenance.
Some of it is home projects, some of it is my body.
I think I put on 20 pounds.
Living that celebrity life.
Yeah, during my jeopardy life.
And so I've been trying to avoid the movie snacks at home, at least.
But do it other ways.
Have a
movie snack.
But if
you do figure it out, let me know.
I could drop a few pounds.
So I'd say the go-to snack right now, if you go to one of the Asian markets in town, they have...
these things called jackfruit chips.
Jackfruit's a tropical fruit, and it's like a pretty healthy thing, but it's delicious.
It's like a sweet tropical fruit, and there are only like three ingredients.
Jackfruit, salt, and chips.
I didn't know they came
in a chip
variety.
Yeah, that's great.
Yeah, you should look for jackfruit chips.
Oh, that's really cool.
Okay.
What about, all right, let's talk about this.
I know you like to enjoy a cocktail every once in a while.
Have you ever snuck booze into a theater, or what do you make when you're at home?
Ooh, I have, I probably have snuck booze into a theater when I was younger.
It's been a big development that now Marcus theaters sells booze, which is nice.
So I can, and it's actually, that's the most reasonably priced item at the concession stand.
Is
booze.
Yeah.
It's hilarious.
Yeah.
It's under 10 bucks for like a, you know, a tall boy or whatnot.
So if
you want a box of goobers, it's
$12.
If you want to drink it's nine bucks.
That's
pretty, okay.
I'd like to.
Greg Marcus seems cool.
I wanna meet Greg Marcus.
That's on my bucket list.
Don't
you run in those circles now?
You guys are both, he's a celebrity.
I gotta put it out there.
Yeah, come
on.
Let's use this as a platform.
Conrad, take a memo.
We gotta get Ben in touch with Greg
Marcus.
Doesn't he seem like a, he seems like a real nice guy.
He seems like a swell guy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, absolutely.
And he's seen his Instagram, he's doing Instagrams with his employees and it seems not forced.
Seems
genuine, yeah, all right.
All right, so what about at home?
What do you made?
Do you have a favorite cocktail or something?
Ooh, it kind of changes.
I think the first thing that pops to mind, I would, a martini, nice gin, classic gin martini.
You go gin at the vodka,
huh?
Yeah, I like, you know, I like that.
A lot of people I know don't like the, you know, the, what is that, juniper in the
gin?
Oh, okay.
But I like it.
I like both things, the vermouth and the jam.
You're saying that defensively, and I don't mean to
make
you defensive
about your cocktail of choice.
Ben Shannon's here, folks.
He is a Jeopardy champ and also a professor at Lawrence University.
He's here to make the popcorn pick of the week.
Norm Kepesky is coming by at 7.35 for some cigar talk and a talk about a really cool contest.
They're having an Appleton cigar this weekend.
And stick around because after the news in hour number two, I'm going to give you the keyword for our civic media go for the green and gold text to win contest.
multi-state text-to-win contest, keyword coming up after the news in hour number two.
But for now, we are inching eerily close to Jeopardy Champ Ben Chan's popcorn pick of the week.
So how do you feel about previews when you're in the theater?
You like them?
This is such a
divider.
No, I guess I could go.
The main complaint is many of the previews are bad now.
Like
trailers are, they give away too much.
Totally
agree.
Like the art of the, what?
And that's an art too.
Cutting a good
trailer without giving too much away.
It's an art form,
absolutely.
So the trailers, there's some good trailers, but most of the trailers are just trash.
Who's make, it's very surprising how trailers are so bad.
All right, one more question for you, Ben.
People are being loud nearby, you and your wife are there trying to enjoy yourselves.
What do you do?
Do you confront them?
Do you shush him?
Do you give him the stare?
Do you get security?
What's the deal?
We probably go at times where it's not that busy anymore.
We typically go like Saturday afternoons.
And so maybe the main thing would be the only loud people we run into are, you know, seven year olds.
And so.
Kind of movies, you
go, does your wife ever get out of line?
Do you ever have to shush
your wife in a
movie?
No, I mean, I think that the main tension is at home, right?
Where sometimes we'll be watching a movie and then she'll look at her phone and like, we're watching a movie together.
And then I, you
know.
But the worst thing is when someone looks at their phone, my kid used to do this, wait, what did he say?
I'm not
telling you.
Sorry, put the phone down.
She doesn't do that.
All right, that's good.
All right, Conrad, I think we are ready for Mr. Ben Chan's popcorn pick of the week.
Conrad, if you please.
All right, Ben, the kidding around is pretty much over.
What is the popcorn pick of the week?
It's tough.
Can I give two?
Yeah.
All right.
So they're two, they're streaming.
They're both classic.
Oh, it can be streaming, right?
Absolutely.
Any movie.
There are no rules.
So one that came to mind recently.
Actually, this is something I saw.
It's an old movie, The Red Shoes.
I think it's 1948.
Wow.
I've
never seen
that.
Oh, Red Shoes.
Yeah.
That's one of the great.
I don't know.
It's top 50 movies of all time.
Yeah.
Exactly.
The reason it came back to my attention.
Ken Jennings, it was one of his five picks.
But it's one of my favorite movies.
I saw it a few times, but one time I saw it at a special screening at the Smithsonian in DC.
And the editor who was married to one of Powell and Pressburger, I forget which one.
And I forgot her name.
She's Martin Scorsese's editor.
So she's won a couple of Oscars, but she was in attendance.
She gave a little talk before the screening.
And she said, Powell and Pressburger, they're coming out of World War II.
They had been told that there's so many things worth dying for.
Democracy, Great Britain, whatever.
And they wanted to make a film that showed that art was worth dying for.
That is so
cool.
So
yeah, the
Red Shoes, I think it's on HBO Max.
The Red
Shoes on HBO Max.
Maybe I'll stick with that one.
And it's
got a 98%.
So we're
going to
do a really quick break.
Then we're going to come back and get pick number two.
You're getting two picks.
Didn't this
happen a couple of weeks ago?
Somebody gave two picks.
That's even better.
Get more referrals.
Definitely.
So, OK.
Ben Shannon's here, folks.
Jeopardy Champ.
We are coming right back to get his second popcorn pick of the week.
We'll talk about Jeopardy.
We'll talk about One Hit Wonders or, no, Sad Songs, right?
We'll
do Sad Songs.
I have a pick for
that, yeah.
All right, sweet.
It's Peach Bob and Nightlight.
We're coming right back on the Civic Media Radio Network.
This
is Nightlight with P. Schwabba.
Great to have you with me on this beautiful Thursday night here.
We're coming to you live from downtown Green Bay Broadcasting statewide on a popcorn pick Thursday night.
Folks, in just a few minutes after the news at the top of the hour, I'm going to
We're gonna dig into the go for the green and gold text-to-win contest, our multi-state text-to-win contest here at Civic Media.
Great prizes.
I'm gonna give you more details after the news, and then I'll give you the keyword as well.
So make sure you don't go anywhere.
Right now, my guest in studio here is celebrity champ, Ben Chan.
And I'm not just saying celebrity champ.
Aren't you like the third highest grossing person ever on Jeopardy or something like that?
No.
In the regular, when I...
that was the 16th highest
in the
regular season.
But that's pretty good.
It's really good because Conrad went on that show about 10 years ago and how'd you do, buddy?
Yeah, I was 16.
16th from the bottom, right above me.
All right, Ben is here.
He just made the popcorn pick of the week.
He's got two of them.
We heard his first choice was the red shoes from 1948.
I'm putting that one on my list, and then you had another one.
Ben, tell us what your other popcorn pick of the week is.
So this is, yeah, this has shaped, I'm a big foodie, actually, despite, maybe.
That's my number one
passion.
You're a medium-sized foodie.
I wouldn't call yourself that.
You're ripping on your health earlier.
I don't think that was warranted.
So one of these movies that really kind of shaped my culinary sensibility,
I think it's the best food move.
There are a lot of good food movies, but it's a Japanese movie.
It's also an HBO Max.
It's called Tampopo, T-A-M-P-O-P-O.
It's from the 80s.
It is, the genre is a Western.
It's
a
ramen Western.
So it has like the trappings of Western.
As
opposed to its beginning.
Yeah, yeah.
So it's quite funny.
And the main, it's...
kind of altmanesque in that it has many different interlocking threads and vignettes.
But the main plot line is a young mother, single mother, who's trying to open a ramen shop.
And her son is being bullied.
She's not very good at making ramen.
And then a trucker happens to roll into town, who's a ramen expert and helps both her and her son get, you know.
I
know
some stuff
about movies, but mostly I'm just a fan and you just named two films that I have not seen that I can add to my list.
I appreciate that.
Oh, yeah, you're welcome.
Great choices.
Ben Chan, his choices are Red Shoes and Tampopo, Tampopo.
Tampopo, Tampopo.
I guess it means dandelion in Japanese.
Tampa police officers.
Tampopo.
Ben is great to have you here.
Let's talk
So what is the latest?
I know you made a return appearance on Jeopardy.
For those that don't know, a couple of years ago, Ben had like an incredible run.
And here's what I love about your Jeopardy run.
It was packed with drama because you went, I was reading about this.
You went up, then you lost big, then you came back and cleaned house.
So you had that drama.
Then you see you forgot like about your Jeopardy greatness.
And then you couldn't play because of COVID.
And you had to get back in the game and you went on a run again.
It's like, you've had a really cool run.
Yeah.
I think it's, it's a, it was very eventful.
Yeah.
It's more eventful than most runs on temporary.
So, all right.
So, well, yeah, obviously if you're like 16, that's incredible.
So what, do you have a favorite memory coming out of that whole experience?
You've had time to reflect on it now.
There are so many.
Actually, it's filled with good memories, I think.
It's hard to beat the first win.
Because that opens up everything.
I mean, I think that's the... I don't know if it's... That was my biggest fear, because I knew I was pretty well prepared.
I knew I could make some noise, but it's hard to get the first one because
you're
playing against somebody who's already...
played, they're probably pretty good.
Interesting.
In the subsequent games, you have advantage because you're not playing against somebody who's played before, and they're also random.
Yeah.
Whereas in your first game, you're guaranteed to play a non-random person, namely somebody who's won.
Right.
Wow, that's interesting.
And then I would imagine your first time too,
is when your nerves are at peak, or is it when you get close to setting some kind of milestone, like how did you do that?
Yeah, no, it's definitely
the first time.
And then after that, you know, the thing about it's like, you know, if you've been in show business or whatever, it's
a
well-oiled machine, right?
So it's like, you have got 10 minutes till the next show, and so it's, you don't have time to think about
what's happening.
You have to have, and I'm just saying this, I'm guesstimating, or making a presumption, but you have to...
A, be really smart, but B, be able to answer these questions quickly on the spot on national TV.
So for people that can do that, you may be played people that were smarter than you, but they couldn't handle the pressure of thinking quickly on TV, maybe?
Yeah, I think it's, I had the advantage of, I played fake practice games with people,
so you
get into that rhythm.
I think good people, it's hard.
to do that if you're not in the groove, right?
It's like, you know, ring rust or whatever, right?
