I've got a at 635 a mystery guest will show up to give a very fast movie review of the the new film one battle after another the new Paul Thomas Anderson Leonardo DiCaprio Sean Penn Benicio del Toro Regina King film that opened yesterday.
This thing is crushing 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, a great director and outstanding cast, and it's a mystery thriller with a little bit of comedy.
I will be checking it out this weekend, but someone beat me to it, and I will talk to them at 6.35 tonight about the film.
So you'll get a quick little film review at 6.35, and then at 7.05, this is kind of fun too.
We're gonna talk about movies with one movie in particular that I've mentioned time and again on this show.
I don't mean to talk about it a lot, but it comes up because some of my guests mentioned the Godfather of Green Bay.
Catherine Lake, the producer of The Morning Show, John and Gordy at WMDX in Madison will join me because it was her idea to have this great charity screening of the film at the brand new Atwood Music Hall.
So we'll do that and I'll give you details on where or when I should say at 7.05 when Catherine swings by.

We're going to talk about a fun screening in Madison of my film.

You know, I have to say I sent you this article How bad was
Maybe we should explain it.
Well, yeah, this guy, this influencer who eats, he kind of makes a point to eat gross food.
But this is supposed to, it's canned herring.
There's some kind of pickled herring from the Baltic, the Baltic Sea.
And it's fermented Baltic herring more technically.
And it's considered a Swedish delicacy.
I'm calling this guy a gastronaut.

And he had no idea.
said, because it was supposed to be gross to begin with.
wasn't again for a long time.
Fermented Baltic Herring, it's a Swedish delicacy, but it's supposed to come out in more solid pieces.
The guy's name is James Ellingsworth.
And he has kind of like, I guess he has like 50,000 Instagram followers.
He
He is a self-described gastronaut who ate this horrible food.
and said he had to take three showers and brush his teeth three times.
But as it turns out, it was expired Baltic herring.
It was all messy inside and gross and he
ate it.
I mean, you know, when you eat enough crappy food, your chances for having an experience like this go up.
And
Apparently, according to where I read this, many foodies, it says, have placed fermented Baltic herring on the Mount Rushmore of horrible food, alongside stinky tofu in China.
And here's one that's interesting, an Icelandic deli-sea compromise of the fermented flesh of a Greenland shark.
Now I've talked about the Greenland shark on this show before because I'm fascinated by the Greenland shark.
It's a shark that can live up to 500 years, typically lives three to 400 years.
So there are Greenland sharks swimming around that have been out there since before America was a country.
And they go like a one mile an hour and they never stop moving.
So you can imagine flesh from a Greenland shark is pretty gnarly.
400 years old.
Yeah.
So, but this, apparently, what James Alling's worth, this Baltic herring, fermented Baltic herring was even worse than he said.
It smelled like if you poured liquid ass on a dead raccoon.
It can't be that
This guy is a roofing sales company manager who has a side hustle.
He eats bad food.
Yeah, let's switch it up.
Flip, flip the switch.
He's got this big pile of this fish, too.
And he's putting it in a bun.
It looks so now that I know it's rotten.
It looks so horrible.
It

That's what he said.
There's supposed to be fillets, not a soupy mess of flesh and bone.
Ugh.
So, maybe the can was 100 years old.
I don't know.
All right, without further ado, folks, let's get to our nightlight question of the night.
Let's talk about the question.

What song is your favorite one hit wonder?
We're doing this on the heels of last night where I squared off against Ben Chan, Jeopardy Champ Ben Chan.
And well, I'm trying to be humble about this, but I schooled him.
The one he got, I gave him.
I would have guessed soft sell.
And Ben did admit for all of his hundreds of thousands of dollars he won on Jeopardy.
And look, the guy has, his IQ is triple mine.
I'm not really staking a claim here, but.
He did say, this is my worst category.
And so we happened to just get them in the right night, but it was so fun having been here.
We took the quiz and I thought, you know what, let's open that up to the public or the couch potatoes, so to speak, and find out what people's favorite one hit wonders are.
I have a couple, and they're sort of different.
Stuck in the middle with you by Steelers Wheel.
Love it.
And a lot of people would argue maybe that's not a one hit wonder because Jerry Rafferty was in the band.
There you go.
Great tune from a totally blankie on the Tarantino movie, Reservoir Dogs.
And that's the song Michael Mann, not Michael Mann, Michael Mezzan sings into the guy's ear, who he's just cut off.
Very disturbing scene.
But a great song totally fits in that movie.
And it's one of those songs I can't turn off when it's on the radio.
So I love that song.
As I mentioned, Jerry Rafferty was in that band.
And he had a couple hits after he left Steelers Wheel.
He had Write Down the Line, Baker Street, one of the all-time classic songs ever.
But technically, Stuck in the Middle with You is a one hit wonder.
And I'm going to throw another one in there that's maybe a little unconventional.
99 Love Balloons.
I love that song.
I love the woman who sang it.
I remember the video from high school, and they never, I don't know if they ever had even close to another hit.
They never even got back to the plate.

It's a great song.
whole thing.
But you're picking a one-hit wonder from a fictitious animated band.
It's good though.
Garp Barbershop.

yeah.
we're being a little repetitive.
Because that's the one neither, Ben, we couldn't get it.
Well, is Jimmy Eats World.

And a great tune.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it's a great.
It's one of those.
That's one of those songs, too.
You can't turn it off.
And it's so funny because legendary bands have songs that are fine and they had 20 hits.
But sometimes these one hit wonders are just overall better songs.
Like.
pound for pound when it comes to a song.
I like the song.
I don't know if Kings of Leon would be considered one hit wonders.
The problem is if you're a music aficionado, you can rattle off tons of songs.
But Kings of Leon, I think it's use somebody maybe is the song.
And that's a great one too.
It's like not even used to play it all the time.
And I don't know if they had more hits.
But

Mystery film reviewer in just a few minutes talking about the film One Battle After Another, the new Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Leo DiCaprio, Regina King, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, getting a 98% in Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty impressive.
So all week we've been playing catch up on texts.
I have to say, this couple I met out here, I've been doing the Nightlight window fun.
taking pictures of people, posting them on Facebook.
And this couple came by and this guy was in one of those riding wheelchairs and his wife, very nice couple.
I got to talking to them.
He was in radio like his whole adult life.
And he worked at WLS in Chicago, a huge, giant radio station when I was a kid.
And then out in San Francisco, his name was Joel Schwartz.
He and his wife, Kathy, I took a nice picture of them and it's on Facebook right now if you wanna check it out.
Lots of nice people in downtown Green Bay, have you noticed that?

For every loud muffler in downtown Green Bay, there are very nice people.
So I can't really complain.
I saw this about Robert Redford.
His favorite word was possible.
And his least favorite word was whatever.
That kind of reminded me of my dad, because my dad always hated, or probably still doesn't, people say, whatever.
It's like such a big term.
But Robert Redford was, I think, older than my dad is now, but it's maybe a generational thing.
I thought that was kind of cool.
Conrad, we should get a true crime person on the show because Robert Redford's daughter, her husband was killed.
It's like a famous true crime story when they were students at the University of Colorado Boulder.
And this guy was shot, and this guy's been at...
large for like decades now.
So it was, I was just reading about it today and I'm like, I don't want to do like a deep dive because I'm not a true crime expert, but it would be fun to, we should have a house true crime expert on retainer.

than any film since Mission Impossible earlier this spring.
This film is getting almost 100%.
It's a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It stars Sean Penn, Regina King, Benicio del Toro, and Leo DiCaprio.
And it's directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, outstanding director of Boogie Night's Fame and Magnolia, all kinds of great films.
And this is crushing with critics.
And it opens this week
One of my the people I'm closest with in my life who is also a film buff saw the film last night And it is my pleasure to welcome actor writer and my son Joe Schwabba Joe.

I know there's a little nepotism involved here with this review, but honestly, you were like the first person I knew that saw this movie.
So last night we didn't even get to talk that much.

What you're saying here on the air to me will be my first true review of this film and I'm excited because it's crushing with critics I'm
well, I'm actually the 100th person to see this movie nationwide.

Were you expecting me to give you some kind of a gift or something for being the hundredth person?
I don't know.
I guess expecting a laugh, but you know, they can't all be winners.

So tell me about the movie, Joe.
This is like a highly anticipated film.
A lot of people are saying it's Paul Thomas Anderson's best film ever.
It's almost three hours.
What did you think of it?
Everybody needs to drop what they're doing right now Oh dear and go see one battle after another because it's awesome.
Really?
It's so good.
Yeah, it's awesome

Thanks a lot So all right, so seriously, that's a that's a heck of an endorsement.
Why is it so great?
It's really good.
I mean, it's one of those movies that starts and just doesn't stop once it starts.
I love that.
Great performances.
This has to be one of my, if not my favorite Leonardo DiCaprio movie.
He's such an interesting character that
every time
he's on screen, you're glued to him.
There's some great supporting roles as well.
It's also really funny.
It was so much funnier than I thought it was going to be.
You know and I know his movies do have some humor in them, but this I mean I was there was multiple times in the theater where I laughed out loud
It's really interesting because I saw that on Rotten Tomatoes when I was reading some of the reviews and I recently on this show I Kind of said I don't like action comedies.
I think 99% of them are really stupid The comedy is not great.
The action is not great It's just kind of very mediocre all the way around but this is this more of a comedy or is it more of a
Mr. No, I wouldn't say that I would say it's very like situational humor like a sort of like a Coen Brothers movie.
It's similar to Big Lebowski in that way where it's not like I don't even I mean you'd call Big Lebowski a comedy, but It's more the comedy brought out through the characters rather than like gags
It's
not like it's like a comedy with like gags and crazy set pieces.
It's just it's just funny I don't know how else to describe it other than that
So give us give us like a thumbnail or a very brief Synopsis about the story without spoiling anything if you can
Yeah, so it's about a group.
It's I believe it's kind of set in a distant future or like a parallel universe to ours where there's like a fascist regime That's controlling the United States And I was saying it's a different universe than ours not ours
Um, wink,
wink, different fashion.
Yeah, sure.
Uh, anyway, yeah.
So it, it follows a group of revolutionaries and it's kind of split in two different time periods.
So it follows this group of revolutionaries and then once they've kind of lost, uh, the regime goes after one of these revolutionaries daughter.
I won't say why that's kind of part of the movie, but the daughter ends up getting kidnapped.
And Leonardo DiCaprio kind of plays this bumbling, ex-revolutionary, higher-up member in the rebellion.
And he has to go track down his daughter.
And there's great supporting characters.
The scope of the film is honestly, it rivals Star Wars.
It's a really rich universe, which I wasn't expecting.
This, honestly, I can see this getting like graphic novel spin-offs for, you know, like a TV show because of all the world-building they do.
And I think that's part of the reason why it's three hours long.
So, all right, there have been movies.
It seems like a lot of movies are longer these days.
When I love a movie, I want it to be three hours.
Like, once upon a time in Hollywood, it didn't bother me.
Mission Impossible's can go long.
I don't care.
I sometimes don't want them to end when I'm watching a great movie.
Would you put this in that category?
I definitely would.
I would say, I guess at times it felt a little long, but I think there, like I said, there is a reason it's long.
Is there some important setup that helps get you into the story that maybe drags a little bit, but it's totally worth it.
when you get into that initial, or when you get into that chase and that non-stop action, once you get to that, it's totally worth it.

Yes, there is a relation.
He is calling us from the car headed down to Chicago to see some friends and took a few minutes out of his day here to talk about the new film, One Battle After Another, from Paul Thomas Anderson.
So, Joe, how many stars out of five?
Man, I mean this could easily be a five out of five I'd probably just give it a four out of five because I don't want there to be too much race and see bias
And you did say it you did say it dragged a little bit not drag but like do you
I don't know I honestly don't think that might not even be fair to say Okay, a three-hour movie feels long to me no matter what So but I mean as far as three-hour movies go this this is The upper echelon of them

Who is the, uh, who is the best?
I mean, you got this top level, like a plus-less cast who, and I hear there's a girl in the film who I've never heard of.
This was like her, her first big role.
I'll look her name up, but who, who gave the best performance?

That's gotta
be one of the best names of all time.
You have to be an actor.
with that name.
You have to be something.
You have to be an actor or like a WWE wrestler.
She's great.
She steals the movie is what I've heard or her scenes at least.
She's definitely like the heart of the movie.
I thought she was fantastic.
Her performance, honestly, it's really good.
And I loved her character.
My favorite character, though, or my favorite performance has to be Leonardo DiCaprio.
He's awesome in it.
And all runner up, I would say is Benicio del Toro.
He's hilarious in this movie.
Really?
I love him in everything.
I like everybody in the cast.
I like and I like Leonardo DiCaprio when he has great material is outstanding.
So what else was I going to ask you?

You know, I'm a big

the wire, a big woodhead.

He was Julius and remember the Titans.

All the performances were great.

The ones I've seen.
Yes, this is my favorite.

I've seen Boogie Nights.
I've seen Magnolia and I've seen Licorice Pizza.
And I would say that this I personally, I like this better than all of them.

I think it's an awesome show it
Part of the reason why I love Dexter is it takes place in the, um, the like early 2000s.
So it's just nice living in a better world than we live in now.

Um, I have nostalgia for that time I was growing up.

you also say it looks different.
Like there's a look for stuff that comes from that era.
And why is it?

People just look happier.

I mean, it's a great setting in Miami.
You can just kind of hop in that.
And, you know, I mean, there is a serial killer killing people.
So if you get past that, it's a nice time, you know, being in Miami.
Another thing that's happened to me for Dexter is now that I'm watching Dexter, my social media algorithm has completely snatched onto it.
So my entire feed is just all like Dexter, like a thirst reel.
So it'll be like a serial.
It'll be like one of the killer characters.
And it'll just be like music edited to them, like dancing.
And it's just insane, but it's my entire feed.
That's hilarious.
