I saw this funny thing today.

You know, right as we were going off the air yesterday, you told me about Jimmy Kimmel had been suspended.

I saw something on Twitter that said, Scott Bale will replace Jimmy Kimmel.

And I, you know, I looked at it and I said, oh God, that's hilarious.

And I'm like, wait a minute, for all I know, maybe that is what'll happen.

And I, you know what?

And I don't want Jimmy Kimmel to lose his show.

Now they're saying there might be pushback and maybe they'll keep them.

But I would almost pay money to see Scott Baio host the talk show.

You probably didn't even know Scott Baio.

I had a look at him.

He was chachi.

You know, when I'm thinking, there's an open seat, Pete.

For Jimmy Kimmel?

Yeah.

Are you gonna make

a run for it?

I don't know.

You know, the joke he said was funny and it wasn't even about Charlie Kirk.

That's why I didn't, I didn't really.

I mean it was a well-constructed joke and it was nothing he said much worse So obviously there's a lot of other factors at play here, but what I do when I do the gig for Jimmy Kimmel money Yeah,

you know for how long Jimmy Kimmel has been on it's What how many years do you think no?

20 15 at least

no he was I

maybe I'm just surprised that they just didn't cancel it that fast after like, you know

How long he's been on TV?

Well, yeah, I mean, I don't, now I'm hearing different things, but it's one of those things where most of the stuff I've read, you know, people getting rich and it's following money.

So, but kind of crazy.

And what I hate to, I hate to come to this, like, now I've talked about this before on the show, when I have someone in a movie who I disagree with politically, if they're a good actor, I like the movie, I'll watch the movie.

you know um but what I can't stand what really bums me out is people who are so brainwashed they can't on twitter or some social media platforms somebody will say something about like springsteen oh he hasn't been he hasn't been good in a long time oh jimmy kimmel isn't fun like you cannot like him but don't you sound like he just sounds silly sometimes when you like diehard i love bruce willis like i probably wouldn't vote the same way he does but

Am I not going to watch Die Hard?

And there are people that are swearing off entertainers because of their political views.

It's crazy.

We live in crazy times, Conrad.

But for you, they're probably normal.

Well, you probably don't know much else.

You know, I remember being a kid.

Yeah.

Just no worry in the world.

Oh, listen, dude, that's, uh, yeah, no kidding.

I wonder, I don't think it's, I think kids today are still friendly.

Like maybe they don't, they probably

do have some opinions, but they don't like delve into them too seriously when they're around each other.

You know, the big difference between kids nowadays to when I was growing up is I'd be outside all the time.

You know, I play video games occasionally, but being outside with my friends was like the main thing that we did together.

That's interesting because video games were like front and center still when you were a kid.

Kind of.

It was like PS2.

Right.

Xbox, the first one.

So I.

I think going outside with my friends, that's all we did.

We played sports all the time.

Whenever we'd pretend we're in an MLB game, or pretend

NFL game.

Exactly.

Did you play tackle football?

It depended on the day.

Like, how do you mean?

Like, you're not wearing

paddles.

Say, if we were in a small kind of area, we'd do two-hand touch, but

we had a big field

to make sure he didn't hit anything when we got tackled.

I'm such an idiot.

My friends and I played tackle till we were like 26.

Nice.

You're right.

And I remember being in like, they came down to visit me.

I was living in Chicago at the time and we went to Lincoln Park and we're on the late front playing football.

It was a fall day.

It was beautiful.

And we're playing tackle.

And the next day, none of us could move.

It was torture.

Like we went out drinking at night and the next day we just kind of laid on the floor and watched movies.

It was awful.

And I don't know why, I don't know what I was thinking, but that was just how things were then.

You just kind of like, I don't know.

But

you know, you had one day where you're sore and then you're like, the next day, all right, I'm better.

I don't know about

that.

It was more than one day.

You hit it hard and it's like, cause, and mostly it's not even, it's not like we were, you know, we weren't trying to kill each other or anything, but you're running fast and like you're not used to sprinting.

So like all the next week, you're like your hamstrings and your quads are just shot.

Yeah.

It's terrible.

But you had fun.

I had fun in the moment, yeah, which is the problem with a lot of my life.

The moment is great.

Oh God, I've seen a few accidents.

They're horrible.

I can't stand in roundabouts, especially just people.

I'll go first and I'm going to say the movie, the commitments that came out in the early 90s, they sang Try a Little Tenderness and it was phenomenal.

But I have a couple more, because as usual, I cannot make a decision here.

I also, there was a movie called Blinded by the Light, where this kid in the Middle East was obsessed with Bruce Springsteen music.

And they do this kind of performance of Thunder Road.

And it's just, he's got a crush on this girl.

It was very sweet and a great scene.

And my third one, Tiny Dancer from Almost Famous, when they're all on the bus singing, just amazing.

So those are my three, I'll probably think of some more.

I'll tell you another one that was good.

I rip on Gwyneth Paltrow a lot in the Hollywood beats, but she is a very good singer.

And she and Huey Lewis played a father-daughter duo in the movie, I think it was called Duets, where it was about karaoke.

Paul Giamatti loves karaoke.

And they sang Cruisin' by Smokey Robinson together.

It was awesome.

So there's a lot to choose from.

or a song or a piece of music or whatever, what is your favorite from the movie?

And there are so many, I was just looking up some online too, you've got all these great musicals, the sound of music, Star is Born, Moonstruck, Grease.

I remember Sid and Nancy, the movie from 1986, and they played a Casey and the Sunshine band song during that, and it was The Doors.

Val Kilmer doing Jim Morrison.

You've got so many to choose from, eight mile boys in the hood.

I don't remember a musical performance in that, but Chicago, all kinds of great.

Walk the line, my God, there's a ton of them.

And one of my favorite segments of the week is our popcorn pick of the week.

We always find someone interesting who gives us a great movie pick heading into the weekend, and this week is no different.

I'm a big fan of my next guest's work.

She is a writer.

She does freelance.

She writes for the Capitol Times.

She also knows a lot about animation, and we will talk about that.

And I expect nothing less than an amazing pick tonight from my next guest, Victoria Davis, who joins us on the stream from Madison.

Hi, Pete.

How are you?

Good.

How are you doing?

I'm doing great.

You wear so many hats that I leave any hats off.

Did I forget a hat?

I don't think so, although it does change.

Well, this is great.

It's great to have you here.

How have you been?

I think the last time I saw you, you came into the studio in Madison, but that was months and months ago.

Yes.

Yes.

And then the busy season started with film festivals and...

awards coverage and so I've been pulling a lot of late nights, but yeah, it's been good.

I got back from, this was a couple months ago, I can't believe this was a couple months ago, but got back from San Diego Comic Con where

I had the

privilege of moderating one of their panels, which was

amazing.

Well, now how did that happen?

Is it just because you know a lot about animation and that world?

Well, I had interviewed a woman named Julianne Cromit and she has a podcast of her own called You Got Moxie and I had interviewed her for that where she brings on people from the industry and they talk about representation and she had liked the article that I had done on her.

trusted me enough that she asked me to moderate a panel that she had with a series of other people called Real Stories, Real People, the importance of representation in TV and film.

So that is actually, if anybody wants to watch it, it's actually linked on my website so they can watch the whole panel from San Diego Comic-Con.

A lot of people loved it.

They said it was one of their favorite panels of the con, which is a huge compliment because

It said it with Comic-Con.

So there's plenty

of other

panels that they could have gone to.

That's

fantastic.

Then we'll come back to Comic-Con.

I want to ask you about another really cool event that's coming up in the world of animation as well.

But for now, let's start.

Let's get to this popcorn pick of the week, because this is a very important thing we need to get through here.

All right, so Victoria Davis, how do you

What is your preference when it comes to watching movies?

Do you like to go to the theater, watch at home, watch on your phone, watch with your kids?

What is a typical movie viewing event like for Victoria?

So it depends.

So we try to do, every Friday night, me and my husband and my three-year-old, we try to do like a little picnic in the living room while we watch a

movie of

her choice.

When it comes with me and my husband, we love either going out on a date night, if we can't, if we can get a babysitter and going to the theater because, I don't know, something, because our daughter Sophie's getting old enough now that she can come to the theater with us to watch certain movies and so.

Without being massively overstimulated and just something about like the popcorn smell when you walk in To the theater.

It's a healing experience.

And so

I

Anytime I can go to the theater.

I do I that's where I prefer to be But there's also something very special about just like turning off all the lights in your house and popping popcorn and watching it in your living room So it kind of like I've also watched movies on my monitor in my office because I just need

some alone time.

There's a variety of ways to do it.

Well, I think what you said is interesting too, because when you go to the theater, you get a break from your phone.

And listen, I love that I can access anything on my phone.

I play video poker.

I keep up on the news, whatever.

I am constantly checking it.

But when I'm in the theater,

or like a doctor's waiting room for that matter, like where you can't get a signal.

That's kind of refreshing, right?

Like, because

when I watch movies at home,

I'm popping up.

I'm like, oh, does she get that last dish done before I restart

the

movie?

Oh, I gotta go to the bathroom or get a water or something.

So I'm with you.

I prefer the theater, but I'm like you too.

Sometimes it's nice just to watch a movie by yourself.

And not have to like you to like you don't even have to like get dressed like you can just

like

a blanket over you and just like watch a movie But yeah, I do I think I think especially now that theaters have those recliner chairs

and

you can like bring a blanket and like cuddle with your toddler and your husband like you could actually like It's it's like being in your living room except now like you said you don't have you're not checking your phone You're trying really hard not to go to the bathroom.

It's a it's I think that's like the best way to watch a movie for sure But there's also just sometimes you just need

to be at home and

do it that way.

I have to tell you I where I live is kind of I don't live in a with a large population we don't we aren't even close to having those reclining chairs in our theater but Conrad has talked about those he doesn't like the stadium seating he likes we don't we're like three steps removed we haven't had stadium seating yet and we won't have the comfy chairs but do you take I don't know if I would get that comfortable in a chair

like a thousand asses of satin.

You know what I mean?

That's fair.

Maybe I just

never thought about it.

Well, like I could sit in them certainly but it's kind of like that's how I am in public.

Restrooms like I can

use

I can use a public toilet unless I see who comes out of it then I'm like I'm not going in there

I That's fair and there's been a couple times where I've like dropped my phone like where the chairs like fully reclined So there's like a big amount of space between like the back of the chair and the seat cushion and I've like dropped my phone down there and I've reached down to get it and I immediately regretted

that

So I think as long as you don't think about it

It's great.

If you make it an experience, if you make an experience out of it where you're like wearing your sweats, bring your blanket, bring like, you know, sneak the snacks in your purse.

Sorry.

I'm probably not supposed to say that, but like, we all do it.

That was one of my questions actually.

Yeah.

Oh yeah.

100%.

I prefer to get, I mean, I will never bring my own popcorn because like their popcorn is a thousand times better than anything that I could ever, but like we've gone to the dollar store to pick up candy before.

Same.

Yeah.

My wife and I have snuck in non-alcoholic beers.

So.

That's a

new level.

I've never,

I've

never even attempted that before.

I've snuck in actual booze and non-alcoholic booze.

So listen, I know how to party.

Yeah,

there you

go.

So, all right.

So what kind of movies do you like, Victoria?

Like, what is your, what is your genre of choice?

I mean, I, I'm, I think I'm known for all, like all of my friends are like, okay, if you want to know what animated stuff to watch, go to Victoria.

So like, obviously that's definitely like a go-to genre for me, but I also really love

kind of like low budget like thriller movies.

So like like Jaws and Anaconda and stuff like that.

But I also love like like one that I had never seen.

But I a ton of my friends were going to like the Broadway show of it.

And so I'm like, well, I have to see the movie.

Was Death Becomes Her?

I had

never seen the

movie before.

I haven't

seen it either.

You haven't?

No, I

recommend it.

It's so

good.

And I it's really funny.

And if you watch interviews.

about like from the stars afterwards they have things to say about the way the film ended and the way it was like they There were debates back and forth about how the film would end so it's interesting because the film is a definitely a about Kind of the inner turmoil of aging and vanity and when you pursue those things it just destroys you from the inside out

and the ending of the movie was going to be different than kind of the more comedic take they had to it but the flavors like the really meaningful flavors are all still there and it's just a really funny movie like just like

It's a comedy, but it speaks to something much deeper, and I like that.

Plus,

it gets

you a little scared, and it's a little freaky, and

it's fun.

It's like this, like decades long feud that they've had with each other since high school.

And like the Bruce Willis' character is like caught in the middle of it.

It's

just like, it's a hilarious movie, but I really enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

You talked about low-budget horror, too.

Have you seen, not that these are low-budget, but weapons?

Are you a fan of those kind of horror movies?

I'm actually too scared to watch weapons.

I

saw the promotional, so I think when, there's a lot of horror movies that are coming out that are very, like, gory, and I can't handle, like, prolonged...

Torture stuff like I can't

handle

things where it's like people are being really put through the ringer physically That I can't handle but I can handle like creepy monster Dracula

like that kind of that kind of stuff.

OK.

Or like anything like Agatha Christie, where it's like a murder mystery.

Oh, yeah.

Kind of thing.

That stuff is great.

I mean, I've been going through, actually, on Amazon, all the old Agatha Christie movies.

Yeah.

Oh, that's awesome.

Those are great.

It's tough, like with those like even with weapons, like just to come up with a run like that.

I'm like, oh, that's the creepiest poster I've ever seen.

And I like the movie a lot.

It was good, but I don't watch a lot of horror.

So when you guys go to a theater, do you typically go with your husband and your daughter?

Do you have different snacks at home?

Like, do you kick back and make a pizza or something?

Or what are you

doing?

Oh,

yeah.

Pizzas to go to, Chinese food is also a really good, like Chinese takeout is also a good go to.

I think that's the one that we do the most often is Chinese takeout.

It's just because we live really close to Chinese takeout and Mexican restaurants.

And

so we

usually just like go with like, like we walk down the street and grab our food and then come back.

But yeah, it's it's it's become a bit of a tradition.

Do you have a different drink at home?

Do you have a cocktail at home?

I know you obviously you say you sneak booze into the theater all the time.

No, that was

you, sir.

That was you.

Oh, that's right.

If I don't think I could sneak this into the theater, but if I could, I would.

We have a cookbook that's an Eat What You Watch book by Binging with Babish.

Oh, nice.

And they have the recipe for Harry Potter's Butterbeer.

Oh, I love that.

And so if I could sneak that in any, I would sneak that in anywhere.

Yeah.

It's so good.

And especially now that it's fall,

That's a good go to is like kind of like a warm cider or a butter beer.

I really like

that's

fantastic.

Yeah, that's that's just really sugary.

But it's

like a

theme drink.

I think that sounds really fun, actually.

It is.

And actually, that would have been a perfect drink for watching Duff becomes her.

That would have been perfect because it's very Dracula adjacent.

For an animated, for people that are interested in watching something animated, outside of K-pop Demon Hunters, because that's, we've talked a ton about that everywhere, but Maboroshi is on Netflix.

So it's

a really

good anime.

That also is a little spooky and thriller.

and very kind of, it's a bit creepy but also really beautiful and really lovely to watch.

So those are my two picks.

I love the diversity of those picks too.

Right now, we have a few more minutes with our friend, Victoria Davis, the wonderful writer for the Capital Times, and she also does great freelance work.

Do you have anything you've done recently that we should read, Victoria, somewhere you can steer us to?

Sure.

I actually just did a story on one of the interviews I did at San Diego Comic-Con for a film called, As Tech Backman.

which is I believe now available on, it's either available today or it's available tomorrow on HBO to stream.

But yeah, that's just a Latin American take on DC, one of DC's more famous superheroes.

That was really fun.

I also just did an article on a Kickstarter campaign for The Dragon King, which is a sequel to The Dragon Prince, which is on Netflix as well.

And that reached its funding goal within five hours.

But

they are now adding more to their goal list.

That's really exciting.

But those are some some things that that I've worked on recently that are that are available for people to read on either my website or on awn.com.

For Cap Times, I am working on a story about an Italian restaurant called Vita Bella, which lights lights cheese wheels on fire.

So that'll

be

an

interesting, that'll be an interesting story.

I'm very excited to check that.

Go out and have some dinner and have a chance at a serious injury.

That sounds like a great.

Yeah.

Is that everything in one packet?

Is that the place across from State Street Brats or in just down the, or no, that's Portobello.

No, wait, is it?

I don't

This is, this is a relatively new place.

Okay.

But they've only been out, they've only been, I think, established for a matter of months.

Oh, that's so cool.

Everybody and their brother is starting a Kickstarter campaign.

There's a Kickstarter campaign for everything.

Have you ever done one of those?

I have not, but for that article, the Dragon King article, I interviewed somebody at Kickstarter and asked them just like,

you know what's going on like everybody's doing this now and they said that they're seeing i mean this is like how projects are getting made now

because

especially in animation because a lot of people if they can't get green light from a studio they'll go and get kind of the funding they need on Kickstarter and then show the studios look there's actually a demand for this do you

want to be

part of it or not so it's kind of a nice way to

put the power back into the people's hands.

I like that.

You're right.

It kind of puts the power in the people's hands, but you're also shaking other people down for money.

So I'm kind of like, I get it.

I

get

it for movies.

It's true.

It's true.

But I've seen people doing it like for, hey, I need a new apartment.

I'm like, come on.

Oh, wow.

You know, I'd like more walking around money.

I'm not going to do a Kickstarter for that, but I get the movie.

Yeah.

That's interesting.

So before the break, I asked you about anime.

I think a lot of people, this is kind of, it's not new, it's been around forever, but it's kind of new into the mainstream, I would say.

The number one movie last week was Demon Slayer Infinity Castle.

That's true.

Yeah, so I feel like it's kind of already arrived, but now it's really arrived.

So for people who haven't seen an anime film or aren't familiar with the art form, what can you tell them about it?

would say just like I think a lot of people think well I don't know anything about anime like because this that's been around for a long time and it's always been kind of a niche thing and people think well I don't know anything about it and I don't know if I'm gonna like it I literally it just it's it's art

and if

you like art if you enjoy going to art museums and seeing art like seeing any like any kind of

I mean, it's just, it's a beautiful form of storytelling.

And I think that definitely there's anime that's not for everyone.

There's stuff that I don't, there's anime that I'm not the biggest fan of too, but like, when you find those really truly beautiful, you know, forms, like there's a film on Netflix actually, an anime film called Mononoke, which is a totally different kind of animation style.

And it's all very like, I mean, it's a color.

excursion like if you

if

you have any you know it's it's uh it's a lot to take in but it's it just shows how beautiful the medium can be and that there's a lot of different ways to tell it so I think I would just tell people that it's it's not really about anime specifically it's about art and if you would enjoy art and you enjoy how art is made

I encourage you to watch anime because they go into so much detail with it, which I think is why a lot of people have become drawn to it, especially for action sequences like what you see in Infinity Castle.

Did you see Infinity Castle?

I got to see an early screener

of it, which was

really, and it is magnificent.

It's it is a lot of action.

So like go

into it

expecting to see a lot of action But it's it's a beautiful film and especially just the like the cinematography and camera work during the action sequences is Very unmatched.

It's it's really well done incredible reviews.

almost every performance in almost famous for like live action.

And then for animation, I'd be remiss if I didn't say K-pop Demon Hunters because it's a music video come to life.

It's a

beautiful film.

And they really, like, they put a ton of effort into those stage performances.

for these animated characters.
