Nostalgia, Racing, and Pickleball Triumphs (Hour 2)
Nite Lite with Pete Schwaba and Greg Bach · Thu Aug 28, 2025
Broadcasting live from the Civic Media Studios in Green Bay.
This is Night Light with Peach Waba.
Your inside source on everything entertainment from Wisconsin to Hollywood.
And now, a guy who likes pina coladas but hates getting caught in the rain, Peach Waba.
Welcome to Night Light, ladies and gentlemen.
I love getting caught in the rain.
Actually, I got caught in the rain the other day.
You know that game I told you about, kind of, that we played soccer golf in my neighborhood?
Yeah, yeah.
All right, so we had our staycation last week.
It's usually my son will play and a couple neighbors, but on this day, my wife and daughter wanted to play too.
And as they're walking over, we kind of had to talk them into playing.
As they're walking over, it is like a monsoon.
And I'm like, are you guys close?
She's like, we're under an awning.
You're still playing.
I'm like, yeah, like there's no lightning.
Getting caught in the rain is
fun.
It reminds me.
I just started watching Seinfeld.
So
good for you.
And the episode I recently watched last night was about the pony.
I love that.
I had the pony.
And his softball game gets canceled while he was at the funeral because
it was raining.
It's gorgeous.
And
he played the game and sucked.
That's a great episode.
I love that.
Karma at its best.
That's the one where Kramer is telling him about the levels, changing the whole configuration with new levels.
It's like a log
cabin.
Actually,
I'm not
doing it anymore.
He's like, all right, so what
am I getting
dinner?
Well, I'm not doing it anymore.
So the bet's off.
Oh, it's so great.
And later when you get to like season four, you'll see that actor that's going to play Kramer when they do the show within the show does a funny levels thing, too.
That's the bit he auditions for.
Yeah.
It's so great.
I'm so glad you're watching.
Hey, welcome to Nightlight, everybody.
That's the voice of Conrad Krieger working the board tonight, producing the show.
It's a great show tonight.
It's a Thursday, folks.
That means.
You know what I'm gonna say.
It's the popcorn pick of the week tonight at 635 WGB W morning show host and Is Dan the program director?
I called him the program director.
He's like the station manager program He just kind of does everything.
He's just a guy.
I have to watch my P's and Q's around.
That's all I know Yep, but he will be here at 635 to make the popcorn pick of the week
and he told me the kind of movies he liked, so I think he's gonna have a great pick.
But Dan will be here at 6.35.
If you haven't checked out Dan in the morning here at WGBW, spin in the oldies, you have to, because he does really phenomenal work.
And I know I used this, I used this word a couple times already this week.
It's only my second night, but he is a radio legend.
Dan has been around for decades.
He's a radio guy, right?
Yeah, that
is true.
Like remember
when Corey Hartman was here about a week and a half ago?
And he's another guy, been in radio his whole life.
He's like on air, he does the weather, and then he's fixing engineering stuff.
Like, I don't even know how to talk to people like that.
I'm like, I go, how did you learn how to do all this stuff?
And, you know, kind of like Todd Michaels, he said, oh, I've been doing radio since I was like 14.
Yeah.
It's unbelievable, you know.
I don't even have to turn off my own mic here.
That's how inept I am Anyway, we do have a great show and then in the second hour folks at 720 WBA why a morning show host Emerson layman our pal will be here in studio and He's gonna tell us all about the Milwaukee mile which he attended last week.
That should be fun.
He's a big racing fan.
He's a pickle baller You know,
yeah, I don't want to you know, he'll probably talk about this, but you can now get lessons with Emerson at pickle ball.
Yeah pickle
ball
Are
you gonna get
a ball?
Here's what I'm gonna do I'm gonna I'm gonna sign up for a lesson with Emerson and I'm gonna show up in really short shorts and roller skates Just to see the look in his face.
I didn't know that that's kind of cool.
Yeah, so he's that good He's a pro he took I thought I saw that he took first place recently
He probably did I don't
know I
didn't I don't know if I saw it, but yeah, I mean he probably did
Well, so we have two great guests tonight, folks.
We have a fun question.
But before we get to any of that, I would be remiss if I did not tell you all about the Nightlight Last Chance Summer Getaway Contest.
That's right, folks.
We have our own contest here at Nightlight.
It's only happening this week.
So if you want to get in on the fun and give yourself a chance to win, you have to do it tonight or tomorrow night.
I will give you the keyword after the first break at like 6.20.
And all you have to do...
Well, you have to have the Civic Media app, which I assume most of you have anyway.
You just text in the keyword and you are eligible for a one night Chula Vista overnight certificate and dining voucher.
It is $175 value.
If you're rounding up, it's basically 200 bucks.
But it's a text-to-win giveaway.
Only during between six and eight tonight.
So when I give you the keyword after this first break Text in the keyword on the app and you are all set folks.
Good luck everybody.
It's a fun contest and it's only happening tonight and tomorrow night So good luck.
I we are not eligible again.
No
But it doesn't mean, look, we could still go to Chula Vista.
It's not like we're not welcome there.
We could pal around there.
Yeah, we could absolutely pal around.
Jump in the pool, splash around, do some cannonballs.
Chula Vista does have a really cool water slide.
That's also a roller coaster.
How does that, like, so you sit in a car and you go around through water like that?
And it splashes
water?
Yeah, you know, you go around.
It's pretty cool.
I've done it a couple times.
Really?
Mm-hmm.
You did not attend the Civic Media Christmas party there though a couple years
ago.
Yeah, I just couldn't I couldn't make
it.
Yeah, you got a brand new job that's paying you a lot of money and you had other plans.
I guess
that's possible.
You know, I was I didn't want to get, you know, too drunk there
when
I just started working there two weeks ago.
I'm drunk most nights.
You had a funny story today.
Conrad was at the Y on a treadmill.
Take it from there.
Well, this this Y it's
It's the West Side Y. So it's the biggest one, I believe, by mass.
And it has probably 20 treadmills all in the line.
And I'm like, OK, I'm going to go to the right because there's no way someone's going to go next to me.
They're going to go to the left.
Right.
This guy settles up right next to me.
So weird.
There's
20 other treadmills.
And he puts it to 10 and
starts the
highest.
I don't know if it's the highest on those, but he starts just booking it next to me.
Just trying to show off.
What were you doing?
What level were you at?
I was at two, and I'm at an incline of 11.
Very emasculating.
I was like, come on.
And I don't know if I told you this, there was a one time where I got emasculated.
Again, I asked for a spotter.
Oh, yeah.
For a bench.
I was going for two plates, I think, at that time.
And I got four.
And he goes, hey, really good job.
Do you mind if I sit in?
And he just reps it
for 10.
He's like, all right, thanks, man.
He reps your max 10 times.
Well, his girlfriend was right over there watching.
Oh, man.
I was like, really?
I felt good about the four.
So based on his 10 and your four and his girlfriend, you have to say, well, look, I know I didn't bench as much as you.
Does she have a slightly less attractive sister at home than
I
could date?
Who would be OK with a four rep guy?
And then you went into the shower and he followed you and stood in the stall there.
That's, I don't understand people like that at urinals.
It's the worst.
Yeah.
And I
don't get
it.
I, I don't know.
It's really strange.
I feel like there's some places that it's acceptable.
I got a ball game that's, you know, just keeps rotating.
There's a lot of people in there.
What if
you're at like a restaurant where there's like six or seven stalls and person just saddles that next year, like, what are you doing?
Spread out.
What are we
animals?
Yeah.
I mean, come on.
I mean, some bars that have the
Oh, the
trough trough awful Wrigley Field used to have that and it's like it's just a you feel like a like you're in prison or something You know, I don't know and it's tough when you're the envy of all the other guys, right?
I mean, yeah, you know Hey, this is you got big news tonight for your packers and I'm gonna give you this I'm gonna give you a minute to gloat
They won the Micah Parsons sweepstakes.
You must be thrilled.
Okay.
I am super happy I've been on cloud nine ever since that trade and I was
sports boner time Can I say that on the air?
I think
yeah, yeah, I was I was scrolling on Instagram, you know when the trade was happening and I saw an Instagram page that's like bears and then they showed that Micah Parsons follows Cale Williams
They're like, oh my God, it's happening.
It's happening.
He's going to he's going to Chicago And everyone in the comments was like really you had a jinx it like that come on
Took a picture or posted a picture of Michael Parsons at O'Hare yesterday Yeah, I don't know if it was really him.
Yeah, but of course, you know bears Twitter went crazy And I don't I don't I didn't read it long enough because I know there's trolls all over the place But he's probably flying through up to Green Bay.
It's like
I don't know.
Hey,
I think it's time we get to our question of the night.
Let's talk about the question.
Okay, question.
Question.
Question.
Question.
Question.
Okay, I have a question.
Questions.
This question.
Domanda.
Question.
Question.
Questions.
It's National Bowtie Day.
What is something outdated that you wish was still popular?
Something outdated that you wish was still popular.
8-5-5-7-5-2-4-8-4-2, 8-5-5-7-5 Civic, if you're listening on the old fashioned radio, or you can text us on the app, or if you're listening on the stream, drop us a stream comment.
If you're on YouTube, Facebook, or X. And give us a like or follow if you're there, folks.
We'd love to get likes and follows.
Who doesn't?
But I thought about this, and I saw that you answered on the, and that's a great one, mutton chops.
No reason you can't bring those
back.
They're just so cool, you know, and you see the picture that I put there, right?
I did.
Wolverine, yeah.
You, Jackman.
You know, if I could grow mutton chops, I would have
them.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I kind of, I went two different ways on this.
I wish arcades were still around.
I thought those were fun.
And also flip phones before smartphones.
Oh, really?
I love the flip.
I love.
I love the cell phone technology and I'm in my car a lot and I have been, when I did stand up or when I lived in LA and I was driving around, I love to be able to talk to people.
But when the smartphone came out, it took over my life.
It's just all my apps, I play poker, I'm checking Facebook constantly.
I loved that time when we had cell phones because they're good for safety or whatever and you could talk on the phone to people.
Now people don't even do that, they text.
And you call people and it's like, what are you calling me for?
to say hello.
No, no, no, text me.
Okay.
Thank you, son or daughter.
So that's what I would say.
It's simple.
I like bow ties, though, too.
I like loafers.
Those are kind of gone.
I like that stylistically.
What about flood pants?
Flood pants are coming handy for safety if you're ever in a hurricane.
That was probably my second one.
You know, a nice pair of, you know, flood sweats.
Wait they're in though now.
You see guys walking around in suits with tight skinny jean tight pants and floods and those big ridiculous like clown shoes they wear well That's just a style thing now.
I think I think it should definitely go over the sock You know,
I don't think of course if
you're wearing a suit.
I don't think you should be showing off your socks
I totally agree.
We're in agreement with that.
We don't agree on much
But I agree with you.
So let us know, folks.
What is your answer?
What are you something outdated that you wish was still popular?
Rubik's Cube, whatever.
There's no right or wrong answer.
There are only your answers.
Be part of the show.
And let's have some fun.
Dan Marcus will be here at 6.35.
He is the WGBW morning host here, spinning the oldies every morning.
Can't wait.
He's going to make the popcorn pick of the week.
And then Emerson Lehman joins us, both guests tonight are in studio, which is fun.
Emerson Lehman will be here at 720 talking about Miracle Mile, Pickleball, his work at WBAY.
He's an Emmy-winning host.
I don't know if you knew
that.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
I think the last trophy I won was for intramural bowling or something.
I mean, that's one to put on the shelf.
Here's what we're going to do.
We're going to ask Emerson to bring in the trophy and then we'll distract him.
We'll sell it on the black mark.
Nice.
Lots going on here at Nightlight, folks.
Great to have you with us.
Let's have some fun.
We are coming back with the keyword to the Nightlight Last Chance Summer Getaway Contest.
That's right.
The keyword is coming up after the break and we'll read some of your texts.
It's Pete Schwabba and Nightlight on the Civic Media Radio
Network.
I'm Pete Schwabba.
This is Night Light.
Great to have you with me on this, was it Thursday Conrad?
It's the popcorn pick of the week, actually.
Yeah,
got distracted there.
We are doing the popcorn pick at 6.35.
Dan Marcus is here.
WGBW morning host will make the popcorn pick of the week tonight.
That's exciting.
Emerson Layman from WBAYTV here in Green Bay.
He is one of the morning show hosts.
We'll be here to talk about the Milwaukee mile.
Have you been there?
I have not made it ever, but it looks really interesting.
I think so too.
He's a big racing fan and a big pickleball fan, so we'll cover a lot of topics when Emerson is here at 720.
Our question of the night is, what is something outdated that you wish was still popular?
I said flip phones before cell phones, because I do like having a cell phone, but the smartphone has taken over my life.
I also said arcades.
We're doing this in honor of national
Bowtie Day.
That was the inspiration for tonight's question.
So we have some texts coming in already from the 331.
That's Nancy from Illinois Disco.
Oh my God.
Conrad, fire up some disco.
We have to find some disco for Nancy.
I love that.
Thank you.
Disco.
How did I not think of that?
I love disco.
Tom from New Berlin, the 414 says the matrix phone, it was by clicking a switch blade style.
Was it matrix or the blade?
I thought it was the razor.
He's probably right though.
Tom also says over the top, but cool then.
From the 262, Barb in Waukesha says, the full service gas stations, especially in winter.
Now that's a great one.
I'm barely old enough to remember this, but I'm sure you don't count it, but like, you pull your car up and people come out and check your tires, fill your
gas tank, it was great.
We had one actually in Qoscombe when I was growing up.
Are you kidding
me?
And it's not there anymore, sadly.
But yeah, I would go there a couple of times in the winter and be like, I do not want to get out of my car.
It is cold.
Well, yeah, I mean, I think people would use it.
I just don't.
I think it probably is expensive.
You're
the store owner.
Yeah.
Make people.
Some at some point in life, they started treating us like animals.
You can get out and pump your own gas.
Ridiculous.
They should honestly make robots to do that, right?
Well, that's probably coming.
Yeah.
Monica from Mount Horrib.
She's in the 608 says, my hair.
Just kidding.
Had a friend tell me the 80s called.
They want your blue jean jacket back unrelated.
Just watched just a bit outside.
Loved it.
We will have to pass that along to Sean Hannish and Kelly Call.
That's great, Monica.
I really enjoyed it too.
Great film.
And especially if you're a Brewer fan, but even if you're not a Brewer fan, a really good film.
So check out just a bit outside.
Mark from the sack says, WKRP, Les Nessman always wore a bow tie.
Yes, he did, Mark.
Who was the other guy who was the senator?
I think it was Paul Simon from Illinois always wore a bow tie.
Very defining, defining characteristic.
You can say feathered hair.
That's another good one.
So we'll read some social media responses too.
We have to do the keyword.
This is exciting, folks.
It's the Nightlight Last Chance Summer Getaway.
We have a few more days of summer here, and we're doing this right.
You get a night at Chula Vista overnight that's in the Wisconsin Dells and a dining voucher, a value of 175 bucks.
That's dinner and a great hotel.
All you have to do is text in the keyword on the Civic Media app and you are eligible to win.
And tonight's keyword is Dells, D-E-L-L-S.
as in Wisconsin Dells.
So text in Dells on the Civic Media app and you are eligible for the text to win giveaway.
The Nightlight Last Chance Summer Getaway Contest.
This is fun.
Oh yeah.
You know?
Chulvis is a great place.
Great place.
We had our Christmas party there a couple years ago and I was pretty drunk.
No, I was not.
But it's funny you said that before because...
everybody was really well behaved because it's work.
Who's
gonna get hammered at a work party?
You know what I mean?
Unless it's like an after party or something and people have already bonded and you feel safe, I think that probably happened
at that party.
I think maybe after and they went to the rooms, that's where.
Yeah, I've heard some stories actually, so I know that happened.
So that's good stuff.
Here we go too, John from Columbia.
He's in the 608 Columbia County.
He says, cell phones are the death of humanity.
Yeah, you could certainly argue that, John.
Thank you for the text.
We've got our social media responses here to tonight's question.
Conrad said mutton chops, of course, and was gracious enough to put a picture of Wolverine, you know, to Hugh Jackman.
Danny Wheels, Daniel Wheeler said, playing video games at a strip mall arcade.
Yes.
until upperclassmen bullies chased you out.
They wanted to play Mr. Do and told you to take a hike.
Sorry that happened, Daniel.
Amanda Nimmer, WGBW zone says, more couch co-op games.
Let me be around people, dammit.
So that's like kind of what kids do now, but they do it online.
And she's saying that like Super Mario Brothers, I guess, stuff
like that.
Yeah, I mean, yeah, those are great fun times.
Super Mario Party.
Yeah.
Rob, Bobby, Utah, Smitka.
I know him.
That's Rob Smitka.
I went to DePaul with him.
He says, Improv DePaul.
We were a groundbreaking group, Rob.
Miss you, buddy.
And great to hear from you.
Thank you for the response.
And then Marinette's own Scott Lieberin says, handwritten letters.
Wow.
That is a good one, too.
You could not pay me to write a letter.
I don't remember the last time I sent
one.
Maybe to my pen pal.
You have a pen pal?
Was it the guy from the gym who was on the treadmill next to you?
He knew where it was going to be.
He followed you home just to get your address so he could mail you a letter.
I don't think those muscles work in my hand anymore to write a letter.
Even when I write my signature now, it
looks like chicken scratch.
Yeah, when you get the bill and it doesn't even look like it.
It just looks like scribbles.
Yeah, it's terrible.
I went to the dentist today.
That was terrible.
I had to put it.
You get a cap on and
he
was drilling, doing the drill.
And he put the numbs, they put the needle in your jaw to numb your jaw and I'm sitting there for 20 minutes and he goes, can you still feel your cheek?
I go, yeah, he'd do it again.
So, but now I got a cap at least.
I was worried I was going to need a root canal.
Yeah, it's the worst thing is going to the dentist and waiting in that chair.
It's awful.
It feels like an hour every time.
They show you animal pictures and I realize or videos and they had one of camels up there.
And I think camels are like.
weird mutant animals
Yeah, there's a they're
not attractive animals.
I gotta show you during the break a picture of a camel without the fur
Without the fur?
Oh gee, I can't wait to see that all right We're coming back with the popcorn pick of the week Dan Marcus is here folks It's a fun night here at nightlight and it's great that you're here.
It's peach waba on the civic media radio network
You're just too good to be true
It's time for the nightlight popcorn pick of the week where we recommend a movie that you'll either enjoy or won't Here's your host peach wabba.
All right.
This is exciting folks One of my favorite segments we do every week here at nightlight is the popcorn pick of the week where we give you a recommendation for a movie
that maybe you've seen it and you wanna rewatch it or maybe it's something you haven't seen and it's just kind of an information exchange here that we do every week.
On Thursdays at 6.35 and we always have fun personalities to make said pick and joining us this week is brand new WGBW morning host, Dan Marcus.
And you are a radio legend.
You've been around for decades.
Casablanca.
All
right.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Thank you.
Dan Marcus, everybody.
I'm out of here.
Thank you.
No,
I've had that happen.
I'm sure you have too.
Like you have a whole list of questions planned and then the guest, you ask them, how are they?
And they answer every question that you've got in like three minutes.
Yeah.
All right.
I guess we're done here.
Okay.
Thank you very much.
Well, thank you.
Thank you for saying that about me.
I don't, I get uncomfortable with that word.
I heard it once before and okay, if you want to
call me that, I don't.
Okay.
Conrad asks me to refer to him as a radio legend when there's cute girls around, and I always help him as his wingman, but I'm happy to do that.
He pays you for that, right?
Sure.
Okay.
So,
but it's great to have you here.
This is
exciting.
And you have, how's it going here at WGBW
so far?
I mean, I'm having a blast.
I'm working with you and Laura McKenna is back, Eric Westfall is back and working with Conrad every day.
It's a bit much.
Yeah.
But I like the guy, you
know?
He grows on you.
Sure.
It's a good group of people.
It is a very good company and I'm just thrilled to be here.
I really
am.
Well, we'll talk more about your, actually, let's do that now.
Before we get into the movies, tell us a little bit about your background, Dan.
Like I called you a radio legend.
You've been around for decades.
You've worked at a lot of cool stations.
Tell us a little bit about how you, the path that got you here.
Oh, gee.
I started at my college campus radio station, UWSUW at Whitewater.
Okay.
And just to volunteer, it was a non-commercial.
I walked in, they let you play whatever you wanted to play, free form radio.
I was learning what this switch does and how to say that and how to pronounce the letter W. W. W didn't work.
That was day one.
And I gave myself a year to get that first job, right?
If I don't get it in a year, I'll try.
Become a lawyer like my dad wanted me to.
Oh, there you go.
Yeah, and I got a job working for cable TV in Jamesville Doing directing and camera work and sports and all every I was Uncle Dan.
Nice.
I had a kid show and It was just a hoot and I did that for like three four years and Then got my first radio job in Duluth and started my radio gypsy years
Wow,
but always gravitated back to
the music of the 60s.
It's my favorite.
Okay.
It's great because what I like about what you guys are doing here at WGBW is it's almost not fair to other radio stations.
When you play oldies, every song is great.
They were all hits.
There's no weak link.
Whereas if you turn on other stations, it's like, ah, maybe I like that song.
Maybe I don't.
Like you really can't go wrong with oldies.
Should I stick around and wait?
Maybe the next
song will be better, you know?
Exactly.
But yeah, there's no lag.
with the music
we play.
And all that music is so recognizable today.
And what people don't realize is that yeah, if you grew up in the 60s, that was your music.
But then in the 80s and 90s, oldie stations came on the radio, and the parents, you know, by now you're 30, 35 years old, but you're listening to your high school music in the car with your kids who are learning your music.
They start to love
it, yeah.
They start to love it, and that's what we see a lot of now.
We see two and sometimes three generations of listeners.
It's such a great soundtrack too, because most of the memories we have in life, we remember the good stuff.
And my kids will say that to me, you had this music of the 90s, what a great time.
And I went to high school in the 80s and I'm like, it was, but so is this.
You'll remember this is
being
great.
But the fact that oldies are the soundtrack to all of it, whether they're oldies from the 60s or the 80s or 90s, because those are oldies now too.
How far do you guys go up with the oldies here
in terms of what's the newest song we play?
Oh, I probably, you know, that's a good question, but I'd say probably 74 or 75.
Oh, wow.
And there's just a smattering of songs from that era.
Most of them stop at about 72.
OK, so we'll do Chuck Berry from the very early days.
And you'll hear Bill Haley, the very first popular rock and roll record rock around the clock.
And then we'll go up through Rocket Man.
I love it.
And you guys and you and we had Laura on last week.
She was great.
We have Eric on tomorrow night.
Actually, we'll meet Eric.
That'll be fun.
So
he's an interesting guy.
So is Laura, an interesting person.
But when
I when people say interesting to me, sometimes I can take that is it's like when I hand someone a script and they'll go, it was interesting.
But you mean he really is an interesting
guy.
He is.
Yeah.
There are a lot of facets to that.
Yeah.
And if you dig deep enough into my background, you'll find out that I spent four years working at a Playboy Club.
Really?
Yeah.
Where?
I have
pictures.
Pictures you are in or that you confiscated somehow?
Both.
Nice,
Dan.
No, pictures I took.
Okay.
Pictures of me with some of the girls.
We called them girls.
They were.
That's what we call them.
They we nicknamed them the girl bunnies.
They were playboy playboy bunnies.
And I'm friends with many of them to this day.
Okay.
Yeah.
Where was the
was at the Playboy Club in Lake Geneva,
Lake
Geneva.
I knew my wife's family used to go.
He was a family.
They had families
there.
It was all the
Playboy
Club.
It
was a family resort.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The kids would go swimming or skiing, golf with dad, maybe.
Yeah.
Horseback riding.
It was
the same.
It's like, it's like, you know, Hooters now you go out, you have a fun family day, then you stop off for.
and wings at night.
It's fun for the whole
family.
I can neither confirm nor deny.
All right.
Well, this is great.
Kind of, we have something on Dan now.
He just
admitted over the airwaves that he's got some skeletons in the clock.
No, I'm kidding.
I'm sure you have a ton of stories just because you've had this great career and we'll have to have you on periodically where you can drop these little nuggets like
here.
But a lot of interesting experiences.
Let's get to some movie talk, Dan, because we're doing the popcorn pick and
I
thought, you know,
It would just be fun to talk to you and get to know you, but also to talk about some movies.
So how does Dan Marcus like to watch movies?
Mostly at home.
Mostly at home, a lot of DVDs.
And what am I in the mood for?
I'll pull out that kind of DVD.
Do I want a John Wayne War movie or do I want the Ghost and Mrs. Muir?
You know, okay, you know, I've got a wide it's what am I in the mood for and that's what movies do They teleport you back and I like a lot of old black and whites.
Yeah, because I like that culture and I like remembering that people were kind and considerate and You know, it's a it's a harsh world now compared to the 1940s and 50s.
Absolutely.
So classic book classic rock classic
You're just a classic guy.
I'm a nostalgic kind of guy.
So all right, so you like those.
Do you like film noir?
Yeah.
Yeah, me too.
I've
been really into that the last
few years.
Yeah, there's some interesting stuff out there because it takes so many twists and turns so often.
Most of them do.
Totally.
Okay, so how do you, when you watch movies at home, what is your snack of choice?
Does it differ than when you go to the theater?
I make popcorn,
extra butter, thank you.
Milk duds, sure.
You get milk duds at home?
Yeah.
Conrad loves milk duds.
I absolutely hate milk
duds.
He just
told his boss he hates milk
duds.
I don't know what
to do with
that.
Conrad, what do you like?
Good and polity.
How about good and polity?
Anything that really takes a long time to chew and then it'll get stuck in your teeth.
I don't like it.
Oh, good and fruity.
Remember that?
That
was like the
spin-off of good and plenty.
Those were good.
Good and plenty is like liquor.
It's like that anise flavor.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I never got into good and plenty.
You know what I'd like to find?
Sensein.
What's that?
Somebody on the network has to know sensein.
Please explain it to Pete.
If you know sensein, text us and see if you
can beat Conrad on the Google.
We'll figure this out, Dan.
Yeah, but that's not a movie treat.
That's just a haven't seen it for years kind of treat.
Well, there you go.
That kind of plays into our question of the night, too, is an outdated product that we kind of miss.
You're
talking about me again.
We miss the outdated Dan Marcus.
So, all right, so popcorn at home.
That's
good.
I get more exotic when I'm at home.
Food-wise, I don't do anything.
I
don't wear like, you know,
anything exotic.
But I
was trying to make
a bad joke there.
Conrad, we got something on Pete
now.
Oh, it might have got me kicked off the air.
I got
too much stuff on
Pete.
Christmas party stuff.
Save it for then.
But I like to make a meal.
I'll make like a steak or order pizza, get something you can't always get at the theater
when I'm at
home.
I guess
it changes
that.
Well, and I make...
a wicked cheese dip.
It's my mother's recipe.
I can't tell you what's in it because it's a, I want to patent it and sell it and retire with it.
My money, but it's that good.
And everybody I play it for guesses.
Oh, is it got this in it?
It's got beer in it.
Is it an ultimus?
It's a cheese dip.
It's got, I bet it has beer in it.
I'm not going to try to get you to say the recipe in here, but it's Wisconsin.
It's cheese.
I bet there's beer in there.
Keep betting.
I'm not telling you cheese dip your homemade cheese dip.
Okay, that
my
mother's recipe and I've been eating it since I was five Outstanding my guest is Dan Marcus folks.
He is the morning guy here at WGBW and the station manager and he plays the oldies every morning there's so much fun to listen to and Dan has made his career in radio and he knows this stuff and it's great to have him here doing the popcorn pick of the week Dan what kind of movies do you tend?
Do you lean to genre wise?
You kind of gave us a couple examples before, but do you have a
specific?
I like war movies.
I don't like gory movies.
I don't like scary movies.
Okay, but I like Well, let's see the that thing you do with Tom Hanks Yeah, I like and I've mentioned many times the ghost and Mrs. Muir you asked me off air What movie has made me cry?
I did Brian's song.
Oh great movie.
Yeah, are you a Packer fan?
You can still say that about it.
See that Conrad?
That's being open-minded.
I'm a bear fan too.
I kind of congratulate the Conrad on the Michael Parsons
move.
Yeah, that's a
great move, huh?
That is
a
really, that is a sad film though, and a great story, Brian's
song.
And I told you about the Playboy Club.
When I was working there in the early 70s, they had the Brian Piccolo golf tournament.
Oh yeah, right.
Two consecutive summers and...
Packers and Bears especially were there.
Ray Nitschke, Dick Buccas, you know, all those people were there in front of my eyeballs.
And they were palling around, hugging each other.
But they were on the golf course, not a football field.
You know what's funny?
You just reminded me of something.
When I was in college, I was watching a Bears game.
I grew up the first part of my childhood in Chicago when I lived there, and I'm a Bears fan.
I'm sorry.
Me too, the last 30 years.
This is our decade, Dan.
My roommate and I were
so
both the
Bears fans.
We
were so mad.
I almost I lifted a chair and I like wanted to throw it through the wall.
Yeah, 19 year old idiot.
And then I look at the TV.
And they're all laughing the players that just they're playing the game and they're laughing like what a loser am I That I'm like taking it this person.
Yeah,
this is so silly is that reminded me when you
said well I am on sports I think people take sports way too.
People have forgotten that sports is entertainment.
Yeah.
Oh, it's totally entertainment Yeah, we talk about sports here on a semi regular basis.
I would say all right
Dan Marcus is here folks.
We're gonna we're gonna wait after this very short break Then he's gonna give us his popcorn pick of the week and I'm gonna give you the nightlight end of summer getaway Keyword again, so you could text that in on the app and be eligible to win a night at you
Can I
win?
You know what if Conrad and I can't win I saw Dan slipping you 20 bucks earlier.
We're coming right back with Dan Marcus.
This is Pete Schwabba in Nightlight on the Civic Media radio network
Welcome back.
Hi, I'm Pete Schwab.
This is Nightlight.
Great to have you with me on this Thursday night.
Okay, ladies and gentlemen, get ready.
It's Nightlight's last chance summer getaway, and I'm about to give you the keyword.
All you have to do is text it in using the app, and you're eligible to win one night at Chula Vista Resort, and you also get a dining voucher.
It's $175 value.
That's more than I make in a week, Conrad.
You know that?
I mean that's good value right there.
You don't care.
No comment, no comment.
Tonight's keyword is Dells, as in Wisconsin Dells, D-E-L-L-S.
So text that in on the app and you will be eligible for our Nightlight Last Chance Summer Getaway.
Summer is dwindling, but the good news is Dan Marcus is here.
He is the morning show host here on WGBW and he is showing me a picture.
Is that you?
That's me.
Wow, what a great getup, man.
I'm 17.
You got the bowtie.
Conrad, this is Kismet.
How old are you there?
About 18, 17, somewhere near.
And who's the, that's a playboy, playmate.
Do we know who that is?
Well, it's a bunny.
Not a playmate.
There's a
difference.
There is.
Okay.
Playmate was in the magazine.
Bunny
was in the club.
They're
like the waitresses.
Yes.
Okay.
Yeah.
And
that's Bunny, Marcy and me hugging.
She looks lovely.
And
were you guys good friends or?
We're still good friends.
Really
good friends.
No kidding.
Yeah.
This is Marcy again and me.
Oh, doing
a
piggyback.
I'm giving her a piggyback
ride.
And you look very happy with a body on your face turning back to the camera.
That's fantastic.
These are not going on the internet.
No, well, they're not too.
She's obviously being modest.
She's trying to.
Well, yeah.
And there was nothing immodest about the club
at all, really.
But I don't want them to go on the internet because, well, frankly, I look like a dork.
I think you look cool, Dan.
Well, maybe now.
We did find one of the snacks, Dan, likes, that is an outdated snack called Sen Sen.
And Conrad, just put it up on the stream if you're watching on the stream.
It's Sen Sen, a confection.
Yeah.
Oh, that just means sugar, right?
Sugary or sweet, probably.
You know, I don't know.
It just
tastes
like nothing has tasted since then.
Oh, that's too bad.
Was
it like a mint
or something?
No,
it's
not minty
at all.
It's actually almost kind of tart and sour.
Everett from Sun Prairie, Texas at St.
Saint's, and the lilac flavored candy.
Kind of weird, but I kind of liked it.
Yeah, it is kind of weird.
And thank you for texting that in.
I appreciate it.
That's,
yeah.
I don't get the...
The packaging is not great.
I understand it's very old, but like you got it's like a toffee fairy or something like something that's technically a candy, but I would never want to eat It's like eating candy flavored charcoal.
Okay You know that's fair.
It was very different and but Does anybody listening know if they still make that I'd be curious and
where can you get it?
Conrad,
is it worth a Google?
I am looking on Google and these packages that I'm looking at seem really old.
Conrad likes to look at packages on Google.
Promo, baby.
You can buy actually, you can buy sense in a brand new box, 12 pack on eBay for $500.
Oh, so it's like been sitting around.
So it's like how many chemicals are in
it to keep it fresh.
And if you want an old vintage roll of it.
It's a hundred bucks.
Gee, that is crazy.
I don't want it.
I don't
want it that bad
There's like in a tic-tac container that one's still 30 bucks Okay, that one I
would go for I don't know man
Hey, we've got, all right, I've got one more question for you, Dan, regarding the popcorn pick of the week.
When it comes to snacks, you watch movies at home.
I assume that's the safest place to have a cocktail.
Do you have a favorite cocktail?
I grew up drinking 7-7s.
Oh, yeah.
But I...
It's a big
Wisconsin
drink.
But I also like Harvey Wabangers.
What's in a Harvey Wahlbanger?
It's a
screwdriver with galley on all
the
core.
Okay.
It's really good.
Very tasty.
Yeah, I remember that.
It's
very sweet.
But rum, what is it?
Rum chaka?
Is it something like that now?
Rum chada.
Rum chada.
Yes, thank
you.
Wow.
I have a big bottle of that in the fridge.
That's delicious.
It's kind of like Baileys.
Oh, nice.
Okay.
Yeah, so
that's a good one.
Yeah, and I do like beer.
I like Patosi beer.
I like my favorite beer is Schlitz.
Oh, my my uncle used to be a salesman for Schlitz like in the 70s and 80s.
Yeah.
And I grew up with Schlitz all over the place.
Yeah.
Is it a good beer?
It wasn't.
Okay.
In the 70s, that was my college beer.
Okay.
And but then they changed the formula and
they lost a lot of the market.
But then about 2000 or so, they went back to the original formula and now I'm back drinking it.
That's fantastic.
Yeah.
So they did like a new Coke thing.
They switched the formula.
Yes.
All right.
We are almost out of time in this segment.
So we've got to get Dan's popcorn pick of the week.
I'm going to ask you one more quick question.
Yeah.
Do you
ever sneak booze into a theater?
No, I never have.
No.
Never have.
No.
Okay.
Nope.
Good for you, Dan.
Dan's a good citizen, Conrad.
We need more upstanding members of society to be on this show.
We've got Dan and Emerson on the same night.
Based on that one question.
I mean, he's got a lot of Playboy Playmate stories and stories and pictures.
Stories and pictures.
We were going to believe you.
You didn't have to bring the photos.
I mean, I would have believed you.
Well, aren't you glad I did?
All right.
It is time to get Dan Marcus, Morning Show host here at GBW, Popcorn Pick of the Week.
Conrad, if you please.
Let's go with Butch Cassidy and Sundance.
Oh, that's a great one.
Butch and Sundance.
Can you ever get tired of that movie?
I gave that, here's, you know what's funny?
I gave that a rewatch about, I don't know, four years ago maybe.
Okay.
I'm like, is this as good as I remember it?
Cause my older cousins would watch it and stuff like that.
So I watched it.
And what did you think?
liked it there is that weird scene where they play raindrops keep falling on my head yes in the middle of the movie and I'm like what is that like it just kind of doesn't fit but I still liked it it was just weird the reason it doesn't
fit is that movie doesn't have a soundtrack there are three songs
in the entire movie
okay and so that kind of comes out of nowhere
yeah it's like Paul Newman riding around on a horse and they just played this
Like Conway twos.
I can't even remember who sings that was BJ Thomas BJ Thomas.
Yeah, and I love the song Yeah, and I was like, well, this is kind of a departure for the rest of the movie But that's a great pick Dan Marcus popcorn pick of the week for having me Can you stick you want to stick around for a few minutes?
You have to go.
Sure.
No, I'm fine.
All right Dan's gonna stick around We'll talk oldies and all kinds of stuff coming up next after intermission in act two It's peach wabba and nightlight the popcorn pick of the week is butch Cassidy and the Sun dance kid ladies and gentlemen We're coming right back
Gotta go on the lamp Stuck in no man's lamp
Broadcasting live from the Civic Media Studios in Green Bay, this is Night Light with Pete Chwaba.
Your inside source on everything entertainment from Wisconsin to Hollywood.
And now a man barely six feet tall, but a mountain of muscle, Pete Chwaba.
You know it.
Welcome back, folks.
Hi, I'm Pete Schwab, and this is Nightlight.
We are kicking off hour number two, also known as Act Two, here on a Thursday night.
It's a fun night here at Nightlight.
We've got the popcorn pick of the week.
We barely got that in Conrad in the first hour.
We were coming down to the wire
there.
Our guest Dan
Marcus is the morning host here at WGBW.
I'm chatty.
And it was great.
It was fun, you know, and we got the the pick is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which is an absolute classic.
So if you're looking for something to watch this weekend, folks, or whenever and you haven't seen Paul Newman and Robert Redford, who is the woman who was the female lead in that movie?
Catherine Ross.
Catherine Ross.
That was the year after the graduate.
Oh, no kidding.
Okay.
And that movie has one of the best endings.
It's just great.
It's a great movie.
Which one?
Graduate or Butch Cassidy
and Sundance?
I don't
remember the end of the graduate, but I'm sure it was a happy ending.
Hi-o.
So we got the popcorn pig of the week.
We've established that Conrad and I both have spatial issues when it comes to other men in health clubs, movie theaters, men's bathrooms.
Everybody just spread out when you've got the room.
So we covered that.
And it's also, folks, this is very exciting.
Typically, when we do contests here at Civic Media, nightlight has been left out of them in the past, probably because of the hours were on the air, but we got one now.
And it's the nightlight last chance, last chance, summer getaway.
And it was last night tonight and tomorrow night.
And our keyword tonight.
That's two words.
That's actually one word.
We say it twice.
Hyphenated.
Tonight's text-to-win giveaway keyword is DELS, D-E-L-L-S.
So if you have the Civic Media app and if you don't, you should text in the word DELS and you are eligible to win an overnight stay at Chula Vista in the Wisconsin DELS and you get a dining voucher as well.
It's $175 value.
So that's pretty good stuff.
So good luck everybody.
Play the game.
And our question of the night.
We gotta catch up on text here, Conn.
But our question of the night is, in honor of National Bowtie Dan, you know bowties, what is something outdated that you wish was still popular?
I said arcades.
Dan's got an answer.
Bell bottoms.
Oh, really?
You miss
the bell bottoms?
I do.
I miss the bell bottoms.
And about the same time was hip-huggers.
Hip-huggers, yes.
Did guys wear those too?
Not hip-huggers,
but bell bottoms.
Yeah, but bell bottoms,
sure.
Yeah, I had bell bottoms with
like a three inch cuff.
Oh my gosh.
Yeah, you got a rock that you should bring those in.
Do you ever go retro when you're when you're playing music in the morning?
No, you play oldies.
I mean, no, no, no, because none of that fits me anymore.
You go straight leg boot cut.
Well, I said arcades.
I also liked the air of the flip phone before smartphones came into play because I felt like I liked having a phone and someone I could talk to while I was driving.
But I and I use my smartphone and I like it, but I could do without it, I think.
So that's mine.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Texting.
What tech?
What
Conrad?
Mine was mutton chops.
You know, if I could grow some, I'd have them, you know.
You can't grow facial hair there.
Unfortunately, I can only grow a neck beard.
Oh, God.
Don't do the neck.
I'll tell you what, though, you grow a neck beard.
No one is getting near you on those treadmills.
It says they're going to stay away from neck beard.
All right.
So here we are.
Hour number two.
Ladies and gentlemen, great to have you with me.
Dan Marcus is here.
This I know if I may.
Yeah.
I just got a text from my wife, Vicki.
OK.
She says, we have bell bottoms in the store where she works.
They're called flares.
Oh, I knew that.
That's
another word.
That's a good word.
She
works at the loft in the in the mall.
Okay.
And so if you want bell bottoms slash flares, go to the lock.
Go to the lock.
That's a Green Bay clothing store?
That's in the mall.
Yeah.
Okay.
When you, oh, Bay Park Square.
What's that?
Bay Park Square.
Yes.
Do you remember Port Plaza Dan down here in downtown Green Bay?
I was in it
once, that closed right after I got to town.
Oh no.
I was in there once.
What happened?
I bought socks from JCPenney.
And they said,
that's what I shut it down.
We don't like those tube socks that Dan Marcus bought.
So there's a lot of things we maybe miss.
I don't miss the bow tie.
The bow tie is still around.
I kind of think the bow tie is cool.
But Mark from Prairie to Sack, he's in the 608 says, I worked at the holiday gas station on highway two up in Superior back in the late 70s.
And one main night before the Canadian fishing season opener, I was alone working the night shift and pumped several thousand gallons of gas.
That was the 11 to seven shift.
So he was the guy, and that was one of our textures said, they miss when the gas station guys would come out and refill your tank for you.
Oh, yeah.
And check your, wipe your windshield for you.
Yeah, you go ding ding over the cord.
Yeah.
They came running.
And they come running, and they had uniforms.
Yeah.
A lot of times with bow ties and hats, it was like, it just seemed like the world was more civil.
And I'm not one of those days of your guy who said, well, I was a kid, like,
If I was a kid now, I'd be doing the same thing kids do now.
It's like we weren't special necessarily.
That was just what was in front of
us.
I won't argue that that
was
the culture of the time and That was a good job pumping gas.
That was
a good first job.
Absolutely John from Madison.
He's in the 608 also says hello Peter and Conrad spent my adolescence in the late 70s early 80s It was a wonderful time to grow up in a small town
bras were seldom part of any summer ensemble.
During this beautiful time and this pair well with the ever popular tube top, it's been a while.
They say these things have a way of coming back into fashion.
Maybe next year, unless there is an executive order banning them preemptively, never know these days.
Well, John, you know, bring back the tube top.
Who says you can't be the guy?
Let's do it.
Daniel from Anastasia.
He's the 920 says, do we text in the secret word only once or do we text every night's word to qualify?
They can do it every night, right?
Yeah, it's, well, there's different words every night.
Yeah.
And so it was yesterday, today, and then tomorrow's the last day.
Right.
So you can text in
once per show.
Yes.
But you can do it every night, Danny.
Yep.
That's
cool.
That's Danny Weals.
And then Bridget from the 818 says fondue parties.
Oh, that's interesting.
Oh, yeah.
You ever been to one of those?
Oh, yeah.
I had a fondue set.
Did you?
It was long forks, and you just took, like, French bread cut into cubes.
And you dipped it in hot cheese, right?
Hot cheese.
What's the cheese in a fondue?
Is it, can it be different?
It's called fondue cheese.
Oh.
I
think, I don't know.
It's been a long time.
Wow.
But you would buy
it in bricks.
Okay.
And put it in the
fondue pot and you had like a Bunsen burner
on the
bottom.
Oh,
wow.
And it would, it would heat it.
We ought to have a fondue night here at Nightlight.
You know
what it did?
It made people sit around the fondue set and everybody had their own time, long fork.
And if you wanted the fondue, you had to sit around in a circle and talk.
Hopefully not double-dipping but dipping and no nobody
double-dipped No, that wasn't even a thing then nobody talked about double-dipping
Bridget continues saying my mom used to have them in the 70s fondue parties and bridge clubs Wow, yeah, my parents used to have card parties with bridge mix chocolate mix cocktails appetizers They got together regularly with people and had fun
Bridget, that's a great text and it reminds me of something I miss also when I was growing up.
My grandparents, my grandma was a great piano player.
Okay.
And we would stand around the piano and sing.
Sure.
Just at get-together.
I was pretty young, but I remember the grown-ups doing it.
What were the songs?
Oh, When Irish Eyes Are Smiling or all the crooner songs.
Won't you come home, Bill Bailey?
Won't you come home, Bill Bailey?
That is one of the songs.
And just all these great songs and people would sing them together.
Even if they couldn't sing, it was more about the social activity and community and friendship.
That's a great time.
That was
what a party was then.
You know, the whole attitude of a party has changed now.
It's how wasted you can get, I think.
Right.
But it's not, it was an important conversation was the reason for the party.
Correct.
And now people
get together and everybody's on their phones.
They're still
together.
My parents would do bridge parties and people would bring their own card table.
Oh, I love that.
Wow.
Yeah.
Cause
my parents only
owned one card table.
Come on.
We were modestly income to family.
What do you think we're made of card table?
Yeah.
Exactly.
So all right, Dan, let's get back to you for a little bit here because I think like I said earlier, I feel like oldie stations are just the best because every song is a hit.
And I said earlier, it's almost like it's not fair to the other stations because you're playing nothing but top 40 hits or, you know, music that has stood the test of time.
What is your favorite?
I assume that that's your favorite.
genre of music?
Yes, absolutely.
Completely 100%.
It's the music I grew up with.
I've had the great fortune.
I backed into radio, but I've had the great fortune of meeting the people who made those tunes that I grew up with.
And boy, that's been fun.
Talk about that.
You told me during the break that you got to introduce, you got to meet some people from these famous bands when you would
introduce
them.
I lost count at 60.
Wow.
And that was 20 years ago.
Three Dog Night.
The Turtles who did Happy Together.
Yeah.
Howard Kalen, who is just an enormous personality and one of the best singers ever who sang Happy Together and Eleanor G. I think you're swell.
He wrote that one.
He's a fascinating person saying back up for Bruce Springsteen.
Oh, wow.
Saying back on some Bruce Springsteen songs and he was saying back up on stage live with John Lennon.
No, and this was when John Lennon was into baggism So bag what baggism was John's philosophy that you covered people with bags Head to toe couldn't see who was in the bag But you had a conversation with them because that would not allow you to judge
that person
by how they
that was a
thing that was well He tried to make it a thing and it
didn't
but he and Yoko did the bag covering thing
In concert at the Fillmore East, Howard was singing back up for him, and Yoko turned to Howard and said, put this bag on me, which Howard was more than happy to
do.
It didn't drown out her voice,
unfortunately.
But I think he might have moved the microphone away from her and she wouldn't have known.
That is great.
That is so much fun.
I remember going to concerts and thinking that radio DJs had the best gig in the world because they got to introduce the bands.
And in my head, that meant they got to meet the band, party with the band, whatever.
When I was a comedian in the 90s and touring, I was in Myrtle Beach and I got to introduce Huey Lewis and the News
who
were huge in the 80s
when I
was in high school.
But the big band at the time was Hootie and the Blowfish.
Oh, wow.
Darius Rucker.
Yeah.
They asked me if I would introduce Huey Lewis in the news and I said, please welcome Huey Lewis.
I almost said hooting the blood fish and I would have felt like a foot tall because I loved Huey Lewis in the news.
You know
what I mean?
I
almost blew it though, but a lot of pressure there.
I've, you know, I've, I've, I've met the temptations.
I've met Mary Wilson of the Supremes.
The list just goes on and on and on.
You mentioned.
the movie The Temptations.
And I asked you if it was the one from the late 90s and you said yes, and there's a great
Who was the temptation that died?
It wasn't Eddie Kendrick.
A couple of them.
Eddie
Kendrick's has passed, but you're thinking
of
David
Ruffin.
So when he died, the next segue was like they show all the temptations singing and then he's gone.
He's gone.
It was this great piece of filmmaking and they have a great story.
And I regret all those years I worked doing stand-up and I worked Detroit.
I never went to see Hittstown, USA.
Oh, yeah,
I want to do that.
I want a
road
trip.
Well, yeah, road trip.
Let's go to the Cavern while we're at
it.
Nightlight road trip, Conrad.
We'll pick up some Playboy bunnies.
Get the guy from the treadmill.
We'll make this a big bus.
We'll go to Detroit and see Hitsville University.
Do the show on the road?
I would love it.
Yeah, there we go.
What are we doing here?
Let's do some radio.
Dan, thank you very much.
Thanks for having me and Pete.
Always.
Let's do it again.
Absolutely.
Continued success in the morning.
And tune in to Dan.
Mark is here on WGVW every morning playing the oldies and the only way that he can do it.
So tonight's keyword is Dell's folks texting.
it in.
We're coming right back with WBAY Morning Show host, one of them anyway, Emerson Layman.
That's next on Nightlight with Pete Schwabba on the Civic Media Radio
Network.
Welcome
back to Night Light.
We are rocking the Thursday night here at Night Light on the Civic Media Radio Network.
It's so much fun to have you guys a part of the show.
Keep those texts coming.
Our question of the night is what is something outdated that you wish was still popular?
We've had so many great answers and the one I love
Somebody said, uh, well, what did Dan say?
He had a great answer Conrad said mutton chops.
What are the bell bottoms?
Bell bottoms is a
great one too.
Those
can stay out
Conrad, relax.
Like I said before, if I could grow them I would have.
You could pull
them off I bet.
Thank goodness.
I look like Wolverine, you think so?
Yeah.
Conrad, now that I
think about it, I think he could pull them off.
But you do have a young face.
Not many kids though.
Yeah, you could probably you do and that's a good thing like you were a youth driven society and Luckily, I'm still in my really late 20s, but you Have you make jokes about how you can't grow mutton chops that way after you go through puberty.
They're gonna come
in.
Yeah once,
you know, maybe want to hit 30 You're getting there ladies and gentlemen, this is my pleasure to welcome
A nightlight pal, one of our best chums here.
We love having him in the studio.
He is one of the hosts of the WBAY Morning Show, and he has a whole lot of other stuff going on.
We're gonna talk about too.
Emerson Layman, hey bud.
How we doing?
We're doing great, man.
It's always great to have you in the studio, and I know you live close by.
You don't have any excuse not to come to the studio.
I thought
Conrad lost my number.
It's been
a little
while since...
You
know,
it's
been a
couple months and yeah, I'm like, oh, I guess nightlight I mean you guys have been blowing up you get all these awesome guests.
I'm like, all right My time is coming gone, but I got a nice little text message from Conrad said it's kind of like a Threat no, it's just like hey Thursday 7 20 like oh nice to see you again.
Yeah, good to hear you guys are that tight
Here we
go.
Let's do it.
I'm like, all right good to be back
He's the face of the show when he's doing that stuff.
He's got
to have a little tutorial.
He should start it with my dearest Emerson.
It's been months since we've conversed.
I don't know.
We'll work on it.
It's great to have you.
Great to be here.
Like, out of fashion things, you know?
I'll send him a letter next time.
Send him a handwritten letter to get him on the show.
Carrier pigeon, please.
That was one of the ones I love, too, is the handwritten letter.
Do you have something you miss, either from your childhood or days of yore?
I don't.
I want to come back to that.
I want to think about it, because I'm sure there's something, but I'm going to rattle my brain a little bit here.
Hopefully, a commercial break will help, and we'll circle back.
Perfect.
This is kind of a throwback, too.
Right down the street, across the street here, is a haberdashery.
That's an old school, hat and suit store.
I haven't heard that word here, because I use it sometimes to be funny, but there's actually one
here.
That's probably the third time in my life I've heard that
word.
Yeah, that's not common.
You just think people are doing Tom Fulery when they say that kind of shenanigans.
Yes.
So, all right.
Hey, before we start, because I want to get into the Miracle Mile, which you were just at.
We'll talk some racing.
Sure.
And I know you've got, I assume you've got pickleball news because you're.
I always have pickleball news.
You are moving up the ranking, buddy.
It's impressive.
But tell us about your show.
How is small towns going?
Small towns is rocking, man.
So
we
actually tonight at six o'clock, so we just aired.
probably an hour ago.
We had our kind of like our best of summer look back.
It's a cool music video that my predecessor did a story on this band who wrote a small town song that we just kind of highlight, kind of look back at some of the stories that we've done so far
this summer.
And then
coming up on Labor Day at noon is our Labor Day small town special.
So a half hour of just some of
Shane, my photojournalist, and I's favorite stories that we've covered over the summer months, and really looking back at that.
So we'll take a trip to Depeer, Wyawigas in that one, Two Rivers, I'm missing Plymouth.
It's just, it's so much fun.
We were just up in Oconto, so toward your neck of
the woods a little bit.
Yeah, I was gonna say, it would've killed you to go a little further north.
Climb further north.
We're getting up there, we're working our way up to
Marinette.
But yeah, we were up in Oconto today, just...
chatting with a gentleman who paints pedal cars like it's just a
pedal car
like these little Old like little old like roadsters.
They look like
but actually kids can get it
made for kids, right?
Wow, and they look amazing and it's just so fun to go to these different
Small towns
and to
meet these really cool characters and just share their stories.
I love it so much It's gotta be like you're never gonna run out of
material either because there's so many great small towns in Wisconsin
and and there's so many I mean like Sometimes you double dip to I've done two into peer because there were two awesome stories into peer, you know, well
I did one up in Marinette back in October.
If you find me another cool one, I'll go back up to
Marinette.
What was the one you did in Marinette?
The pickleball tournament you came
to.
Oh, right.
The Swensons,
yeah.
They do such a cool job for the sport of pickleball.
And I wanted to showcase them.
And if you play pickleball in Wisconsin, you know who Brian and Kim Swenson are.
So we had to shine a little spotlight on them.
All right, when we do the news, you think is something that's outdated that you wish was, and I'm gonna think of another cool Marinette thing, because we got a lot going on.
Sounds like a plan, man.
Let's do it.
It's a small town, but we got stuff happening.
Have you been to Kewaskum?
I've dabbled in Kewaskum.
Conflict of interest, or?
I've been there.
I haven't done a story there, because it's very fringe, our viewing area.
I did it when I
was in Milwaukee.
Oh, okay.
Oh, that makes sense.
It has to be on around
here.
Like the town of Kiewaskam, some of them get Green Bay, but the village, they get Milwaukee.
It's like,
it's right on the
border.
So
we'll see.
Maybe, maybe we'll have to work Kiewaskam in there in the next couple of months here if I can find something.
Conrad.
Got it.
Go to Sunburst.
How about
that?
That could be an option.
I don't know
what
else to say.
I'm sure
it could be an
option, Conrad.
I'd appreciate that.
Monica from Mount Horrib, she's in the 608 says, isn't it like Pocky?
That's the sense, then.
Little breadsticks dipped in various flavors, chocolate, strawberry, and banana, et cetera.
I really don't know.
Do you know what sense it is?
I've never heard of that.
Mark from The Sacks says, the thin man movies were great and bringing up baby with Carrie Grant and Kate Hepburn.
Mark is a fan, if he's calling her.
Catherine Hepburn, Kate, he's abbreviating that like, pals.
I love that mark.
First name basis.
First name basis, exactly.
And then you read this one, I think, from Everett Sun Prairie, who also said...
It was still available in the 90s at Walgreens, Sen Sen.
Oh, that's been a while then.
It's harder to find than Sidney Sweeney bath soap now that I can't pay top dollar.
I know what I miss.
I can't wait to come back
for the commercial break.
All right, fantastic.
That's Emerson Layman, WBAY Morning Show host.
We're coming back to talk pickleball and get his answer to the question of the night.
It's Pete Schwabba in Nightlight on the Civic Media Radio
Network.
Welcome back.
I'm Pete Schwama.
This is Nightlight.
I know.
Where's the deal?
It's like become a thing and I'm probably going to take your picture through
the window.
This is
the place to
be.
Nightlight.
Tomorrow Night on the show, Eric Westfall will be here at 6.35.
He is another new on air personality here at WGBW.
And Terri Barr will be here at 7.35 for Bar Band Friday Night.
She will bring awesome tunes and great convo, so do not miss Tomorrow Night's show.
Right now, we are talking with our pal Emerson Lehman.
He is one of the hosts of the WBAY Morning Show here.
Do you call it Morning News or the Morning Show?
Action to News This Morning.
Oh, I got it.
Write that
down.
WBAY morning show that counts.
Action to news, Green Bay.
Action to news this morning.
This morning.
Because we cover all of Northeast Wisconsin, Pete.
I know you do.
Yeah.
It's insane.
And some of the U.P.,
right?
Some of the U.P.
as well.
Yeah, we're like
two blocks that way.
Okay.
I sang there.
I was in a swing choir when I was in high school.
In the auditorium there?
Yeah, we got to go in there.
I was like, whoa.
It's pretty cool, isn't it?
It was really cool.
Yeah.
I still get lost.
Do you really?
It's a maze.
It's
a great building.
It's
so cool.
There's so much history in there.
Do you have...
anchors like that you You know watched growing up either on real news or in movies like Ted Knight or Ted Baxter is one of my all-time favorite You have people like that that you watch and you go oh man.
I would love to do that
Yeah, that's the reason I got into news was I was sitting it was like my junior year of high school and I was watching the news with my mom and I Didn't know what I was gonna do with my life I thought I was gonna be a race car driver and then I kind of figured that wasn't
gonna happen.
Yeah, and I'm
trying to think, what am I going to do to make money?
And I liked talking.
I thought being on TV would be kind of cool.
And we're watching the news and I said, I can do that.
They
just read a teleprompter.
What?
Yeah, let's absolutely done.
Then I went to college and figured out that's not all they do.
There's a
lot that
goes into it, but I fell in love with it anyway.
So that's what
got me into the news aspect.
But I mean, you asked people that I like admire one
person I would shout out is Joyce Scarbeciak.
She was a longtime anchor down in Milwaukee, loved watching her growing up.
And then I actually, when I interned at channel 12 in Milwaukee, I got to learn from her and be able to, I like be able to.
Converse with her and just she was the first person when I got my first job to reach out to me and say I'm really proud of you.
Congratulations.
It was it was pretty
It
was so cool
and
I when I won Miami, too She was one of the first people to reach out to me and say congratulations, you know, so proud of you it
That was very special.
I'll never forget that.
You see
how we work the Emmy into the conversation.
Just two big
moments in your life.
You remember who reaches out.
So,
you know, yeah, it was very special
that she did that.
I'm teasing.
I was actually going to ask you because I know you were nominated again last year.
You're such a young guy.
You've already got an Emmy and a nomination.
Like, what's in store this year for someone who's already an award-winning newscaster?
I don't know, man.
We'll see.
I think nominations come out in October, I believe, or maybe late September.
So in the next couple of months here, I thought we had a really good year.
I'm really proud of the work that our morning team has been doing.
We had a ton of live coverage from the NFL draft.
I was
really proud of that.
We wrapped up EAA a couple of weeks ago.
We were down there for three days of that week, just kind of doing things different and kind of separating ourselves in that way.
Get to anchor alongside someone like Tammy Elliott who is just the ultimate professional It helps me elevate my game and
right
it just I'm really really proud of the work that we've been we've been doing this year and hopefully the the judges will think so as well, but You know, it's cool to win an award and go home with a trophy But I mean it's you're not doing it for that right you do
it because you
want
you love the
gig you love the gig
you
love, you know being a part of
of those viewers' everyday routine and just being a part of that and knowing that you're doing important work.
And that's what you do it for.
But if someone wants to give you a cool, shiny statue for
doing it, you're not going to say no.
Absolutely.
That's so great.
Well, Small Towns is Emerson's kind of side hustle at WBAY.
When can people see that before you move on?
So Thursdays at six, you can watch every week.
And then
I'll do another plug for our special that's coming up on Labor Day, so if folks get home at noon on Monday, turn on WBAYtv and you'll get a half hour of just some of our favorite stories that we've had the chance to cover so far this year.
We've
had a
really good time.
That's fantastic.
Emerson Lehman is my guest.
He is one of the anchors at Action 2 News This Morning here in Green Bay at WDB.
See Conrad is taking a picture.
He's getting the window open.
Can you get their name Conrad, the family name, so we can put that on Facebook?
So we've been doing this thing where we take a picture.
I'm probably going to ask you to take your picture.
I'll do it.
I'll take a picture of the window.
That's all right.
You used to have your picture taken.
So all right, I want to ask you, you were at the Milwaukee mile.
I was.
You're a huge racing fan.
Major.
So what is the Milwaukee mile for?
I've never heard of it.
And I know I'm a sports fan.
I've heard of NASCAR.
What is the Milwaukee mile?
One of, if not the
oldest oval racetrack in America.
Okay.
So it's at the State Fair Park, right on the grounds there.
And it's a mile long concrete oval.
So it's part of, you mentioned the Indy 500.
So
it's part of the
Indy Car Series
schedule.
So the Indy 500 is like the marquee race of the year for the Indy Car Series, but they still have 17 other races outside of the 500.
I did not know that.
So they go to
Road America at Elkhart Lake.
They
make a
stop there back in June and then they
The first the first year back to Milwaukee was last year.
They had a double header Saturday Sunday and I was very proud of that because they had left attendance had been low at races and The series had gone away and a lot of people said the miles dead.
It's that's it.
It's not gonna come back It's just there's not a passion for it.
They can't make it work and then huh NASCAR dip their toe in with their truck series and came back and I kept saying
Indy car is going to make one more run at it.
Indy car is going to make one more run at it.
And it was probably a hopeless feeling for me, but I was just, I was just, it's
going to
happen.
It's cause I grew up going there, right?
I
just love Indy car being in Wisconsin and they, a lot of haters said it wasn't going to happen.
And it happened last year and they had to really
decent crowds for the first year back.
And then it went from two races to one race this year and they sold out the grandstands.
So
the
ones that they had seats available.
So IndyCar racing is alive and well in Wisconsin.
I will make that
proclamation.
I was so happy to be sitting there with my dad, know nothing better than a day at the racetrack with your pops.
And just, yeah, it was a great race.
First time winner for the IndyCar series and
Yeah, man, it was
just a great time.
We have some pictures that Terry Barr shared with us that we will share on the stream.
So if you're watching on the stream, I should say, there we go.
Terry Barr was at the mile?
She was.
Look at that.
She's everywhere.
She is everywhere.
That looks like it was post-race.
OK.
Yeah, that's post-race.
Let's do another one, Con.
There they go.
That's part of the race.
Yeah, so that
that might be right toward the
end as well or
when they're in the pits Yeah, so that's in the going in for their pit stop.
So you
see the tires that are laid out
We had
a beautiful day for
it
was gorgeous man.
Yeah,
it's crazy There was a pop-up rain cloud they so they don't race in the rain because
they
have slick racing tires on The race was it was getting to a point where it like okay, maybe a caution like something spice it up toward the end
Mother Nature was paying attention and she's a race fan because just one random pop-up cloud started spitting like sprinkles not enough to soak the track and like make a big delay But just enough that they had to throw the caution flag and and slow them down for a couple laps and bunch
of all
back up And then the last 20 laps was just a shootout incredible to watch so
much
fun But it it was Chamber of Commerce weather.
Otherwise, like it was 68 degrees sunny There's another look at that the blue blue skies just
it was one of those one of
those
What
is that
phrase?
I've never heard that before.
Chamber of Commerce weather?
Yeah.
Like when, you know, beautiful Green Bay, Wisconsin, check out the blue skies, sunshine, and 70 degree weather.
Like
it helps the chamber of commerce.
You put that in the brochure because you want people to come and visit.
I've never heard of that before.
You learned something new today.
I did.
What is a chamber of commerce?
No, I'm just kidding.
Don't ask, don't get too into detail, man.
Be careful there.
That's cool.
I have to ask you two, have you seen F1?
Because you were the first person I thought of when I saw that movie.
I am.
I don't want to admit this.
I haven't yet.
You have to see
it.
So the plan was to go see it with my dad.
Yeah.
And then by the time we finally got together, it was out of theaters.
Okay.
And I'm a little bummed about that because everybody I talked to, oh my gosh, you have to see it in theaters.
It was incredible
in
theaters.
So I don't know if I want to like wait until at some point, I feel like there will be another showing or if I'm just going to say, you know what, I'm going to
Find a friend with a really
big flat
steering.
Yeah,
I need to watch it.
I've heard very good things yeah from people in the racing community and From I'm here.
How did you like it as a film
scholar?
I love it as as a movie the story sure, but the racing scenes a guy like you that's probably all you I mean you still want to see a good movie, but
The story was fine, but it's something we've seen a million times.
But yeah, the racing scenes were amazing.
And Emerson, the coolest thing, and my son laughs at me because he liked it more than I did, but he said, I said the coolest thing about the whole movie is the pit crew.
I cannot believe how fast
those guys work.
Two seconds.
How
do they do that?
Two seconds.
Four new tires in two seconds, go.
Yeah, it's wild man.
Indy cars they take about like eight seconds because they fuel up the cars too, but okay.
Yeah f1 Two seconds
and doesn't even seem if
if they do two and a half seconds the commentators say all that
was over those
slow stop Yeah,
it's wild.
It's wild
man.
Did you
see f1 con?
I watched it on my laptop
I feel like that's worse than
me watching it in my living room Conrad.
I was laying in bed and I saw and I'm like, you know what?
Yeah, let's watch it and then I should rent a theater.
I think cuz how loud the cars are I think it would have been so much better.
Yeah, I'm pretty upset with
myself that I it's really I should have just went on some Tuesday.
Yeah, I got a picture with Greg Marcus a couple weeks ago
I just needed to plug that real
quick
Marcus theaters.
Oh Marcus theaters.
Yeah.
Yeah, of course.
Yeah, the guy who pops up on the
oh Greg Marcus.
Yeah, yeah, of course
I was Very starstruck.
I try not to get
starstruck.
I'm at my friend's wedding.
He's her like distant cousin
So he's there and
I walked right up to him.
I said mr. Marcus I have to get a picture with you if you don't mind he goes Oh sure a lot shorter than I was expecting him to be but
Very kind guy.
He chucked up the deuce.
Oh,
man.
Oh, I that's cool because our struck
I knew who you were like Greg Marcus from the he's on before the movie.
Yeah, he comes in with this popcorn.
It's great.
Yeah, it's like you know, I did
I come in I was just yeah talking about movie theaters and I just I felt
the need to
share that with you real quick
That's awesome.
All right, we're gonna we still have pickleball to cover we do but I'm gonna try to get through a couple of these Texas steady Eddie from the 608 says Pete mad magazine once printed a takeoff of butch Cassidy in the son is kid.
They called it bell Belch casually and the some dunce kid
Sounds like Mad Magazine.
America is getting soft.
We need to bring back the yard game jerks.
Some people said it was too dangerous, but I'm living proof that you only need one kidney.
Well done, steady Eddie.
Melissa from Willy Street in the 608 says, for the question of the night, I say Raleigh.
Oh, Raleigh Fingers Mustaches.
Those in the handlebar?
Yeah, those are so cool.
Are those, those are kind of still in?
Like you still see occasionally.
Again, if I could grow it, I would have it.
Mutton shops and that.
I miss
landline telephones.
Yeah.
There was nothing better than like sitting at dinner at night and hearing the phone ring and then being like, oh, who's calling?
And then
finally you get caller ID and oh, Graham is calling, but you still got like now it's just it's
phones are too accessible now.
My parents still answer their landline like it's oh, the phone's ringing like it's nobody.
I miss that calls on a landline.
I do too.
But sadly,
I wish social media was gone and we could get that back.
I'm with you,
buddy.
John Murray from Madison says they're selling tube tops at the Lofton Green Bay.
Yes, they are, John.
Come on down and grab one.
We have a few more minutes with our pal Emerson Lehman when we come back.
It's Pete Schwabba in Nightlight on the Civic Media Radio Network.
Welcome back.
This is Nightlight.
I am Pete Schwabba.
We have a few more minutes left here as we wind things down our pal Emerson Lehman, who is a Big Race fan.
He is also the host of Action 2 News This Morning here in Green Bay.
And you might...
Or maybe if you listen to the show, like most of you do, you know that he is a pickleball aficionado.
Fresh off a first place win in Appleton.
Tell us about that and what's new in the world of pickleball.
Yeah, man, it's been a good year in pickleball land, for myself at least.
I've been very fortunate.
Shout out to my many partners, Anna, Carolyn, JJ.
They've all helped me get some get some W's this year.
And yeah, it's been a lot of fun.
Just the Mary Beth Neenhouse pickleball tournament was a couple of weeks ago.
Swept the day that down there one men's in mixed.
So that was cool.
Don't get to say that often.
So that's incredible.
I was pretty happy about that.
Yeah.
A lot of a lot of good players.
And it was it's always nice to just metal, but to be able to stand on the top step twice is pretty felt pretty fortunate to do that.
So do you ever win money?
Like at these
tournaments?
There are some moneyball tournaments.
Those ones, those ones were not.
But there are certain ones throughout the year that you will participate in.
And those are really where you get some of the top players.
So it's fun because you have
to go kind of test
your skills against some people who are a lot better than I am.
So it's always fun to be able to, you want to play people that are going to make you better.
You don't want to.
Like you always want to be getting better.
So it's it's I enjoy if I can find someone to play with I'd be playing a tournament every weekend So it's it's fun to be able to go to some of those bigger ones and play against really good competition
It'd be sweet if you did something so spectacular pickleball You had to cover that with your day job and you could interview yourself.
It's funny man our our producer Garrett he loves to put I'll post some like pickleball videos on social media and he loves to just
pluck those into our shows without really telling me and it'll pop up and
oh
Emerson played pickleball this weekend and I'm like, oh, this is what I posted on Instagram yesterday.
And I scare
it.
They help promote the
brand a little bit when we can, especially on our live stream or web shows where that happens a lot.
I mean, I know it's a hobby, but
How far can you take pickleball?
Like you have a pretty good dig and you're pretty good at it.
How do
you do like, would you travel more or what would you do?
Yeah, like it's, that's what it is.
It's a hobby.
It keeps me active.
It keeps me having fun.
It kind of scratches that competitive itch.
I've always been a competitor my whole life growing up.
So it definitely scratches that itch.
I'm not going pro by any means, but it's just fun to travel around the state or even like the Midwest.
Like I said, just go to these different tournaments and it's fun to win some of the local ones, but it's also fun to go to some of these more regional ones and play against players who are better than you.
Some of them a lot better than you.
And it like, oh, I might be like, I have a lot to work on.
I have a lot to get better at.
So it's fun to do that and kind of humble yourself and also learn from them, right?
Learn every time you step on the court and just have fun and compete and.
There's so many really cool people that you meet through the sport like anything, right?
You anything that you're passionate about you're gonna meet other people who are also passionate about it So definitely made a lot of friends That through pickleball that I'm very fortunate to have now and what a great man to you kind of stay in shame Yeah, you run around you get to go to

It's gutsy to wear those
sometimes though.
It was way too small for my head.
I got a big head.
Does it fall off?
It just didn't look good, but I thought it looked great.
But you look like it.
I love fedoras.
Jack says, I still have my dad's Kavanaugh.
Oh, it's like he's getting very specific with his fedoras.
And from 1953, I wear it when I go out at my jazz gigs.
Jack's a musician.
I love that.
I really enjoy the fashion from those late jazz days.
One of my women music friends wears those kinds of clothes, too, to her gigs.
Mark from the sax says, on that 70s show, the fondue night didn't turn out so well for
Oh, do you remember that Conrad?
You see that episode?
No, I can't remember that episode.
I've seen it.
I've seen that show so many times.

Mark also says it wouldn't be top 40, but King Crimson in the court of Crimson King led Zeppelin and Moody Blues Rush, obviously, in reference to the Dan Marcus' appearance here.
And then we have a stream text.
We have to get to the ending.
And then I'm
talking about that
picture.
If you're watching on the stream, tune in right now, because Emerson, it's an action shot.
And those are pretty tight shorts, buddy, but
it's a show off the legs.
Got a few
little out of chicks playing pickleball.
He's nodding.
That doesn't go over well on
radio.
This is not your TV gigs now.
Yeah.
Sure.
I would imagine
if you meet
a girl that's great at pickleball, that's an instant love connection almost, or potential.
Potential, I guess.
Yeah, sure.
All right.
I'll keep my eyes open.
All right.
And Marinette, we're going to connect.
Ever since Joe listening on the stream says the ending of the graduate is also great But more prophetic than funny.
Oh, that's right.
They were on the back of the bus Riding on the bus.
