We are 49th in the state.
Maybe sometimes we make our way up to 48 for public arts funding.
So
all of
us, yes, it really is.
It really is.
So with the news that I heard during the break, you know, there are a lot of hits right now to our federal funding and our state funding.
So anything that anybody can spare, it doesn't even take a lot.
An organization like Arts for All
wisely, wisely uses your resources and does tremendous things.

So we're gonna have Mike on the show soon.
That'll be fun.

I think he's considered really good There is another guy there who I tomorrow night folks if you tune in we're gonna have I got some sound bites at the Marinette rec center
and we'll have some soundbites from pickleball players and fans.
It'll be a fun little piece, but someone introduced me to the actual ringer, a guy who, and his name is Zach, and he is a pro.
He's 21, and apparently you can't get anything past him.
He's just like a monster on the pickleball court, and he's got sponsors.
How do you like that?
That's very cool.
It kind of sucks when a new craze comes along.
And I'm an OK pickleball player.
We've played in the driveway for years now.
Actually, my mom was on the pickleball thing like 12 years ago, but I never took it.
Seriously, I was like, oh, this is a fun backyard game, like bocce ball.
But there are people making a living at it now.
Who knows?
Yeah, I don't know either.
But Emerson is on it, too.
pretty darn good player, as I understand it.
But he will be here Friday, folks.
He will talk about his Marinette experience.
He says he always has a good time when he goes to Marinette, which made me happy.
So we'll talk to Emerson Friday, and we'll have some good sound bites from the pickleball tournament in Marinette last weekend, just yesterday and Saturday, actually.
So that'll be fun.
As I mentioned, I saw two great movies.
Well, I saw two movies this weekend.
One was great.
One was OK.

I can't keep it straight because my son is about your age and he, he said that I'd be happy to come on the air and give a review.
He went and saw it with a buddy of his last week.

I don't know where it was Well when they're airing that disclaimer before the movie Jack Black actually walked in and was like Don't do this guys

I can't, I mean, let's be honest, teenage boys are the biggest jerks in society.
Honestly.
I was one.
I get it.
Yeah.
If I had, if I had a journal of all the dumb things I said as a teenage boy, you know, you've got to excuse behavior to a point, but when you're throwing popcorn and vomiting,
That's just like, what are you doing parents?
And it's a small, it's not everybody.
But
Yeah, no, I think it's not even just teenage boys doing it either.

It's my age, you know.
But I think that this is just a dumb way to watch movies.
And I saw a review that puberty did on Instagram and they asked people,
What was your review of the movie?
It was pretty much the exact same thing.
I said it's like, you know, it was fun, but It's a ratings.
It's a box office

Minecraft is actually a great game for kids.

Hey Pete, thanks for having me.
I am in Milwaukee, so you got it.
All right, fantastic.
I thought so, but I didn't want to make assumptions.
But it's great to have you here.
I'm glad we figured this out.
And I know you're very busy.
You've got a lot of gigs, as they say.
Yeah, I'm very lucky that way.
April's been a busy one so far, and that's not going to change.
Good for you.
That's I remember I was a stand-up comic in the 90s and there was nothing I hated more than an open date on my calendar It was and we didn't even have like a palm pilots was the first electronic thing.
We had actual calendars We wrote our dates in so

I'm doing that.

We are already kindred spirits Hey, do you have a favorite chick flick?
You know, I mean I like some of the ones you were talking about I mean bridesmaids legally blonde but
One of my favorites is my best friend's wedding.
Oh, yeah, Robert.
Sure.
That's a great one.
Yeah, I don't think we've heard that tonight.
That's a great one All right, it's good to have you here I know that you recently Dana did a gig in Port Washington at memories ballroom and I already had I think was Greg Schwem you worked with I already had him lined up for the show.
So we're doing this sort of Retroactively, but how did that gig go?
That's a great room, huh?
Oh, that is a great room.
I think it went
incredibly well.
It was packed out.
And Greg was great to work with.
And the host, Rob Haswell, meteorologist, was also really great.
So that was cool to see.
So wait a minute, there's a host, who's a local meteorologist?
And he's just, is this a side hustle, the comedy thing?
Yeah, you know, I asked him and he said that, you know, back in the day, he did a lot of like improv stuff in Chicago.
Okay.
And then you know, life happens, you get a family and that
slowed down, but he's always enjoyed doing it.
And he just did like straight up crowd work, which is hard to do, but he nailed it.
He didn't do any weather comedy.
How about those five day forecast folks?
Nothing like that?
Nothing like that.
And that would have been understandable.
Sure.
That's
admirable.
That's awesome.
All right.
So for those of our listeners who might not know
have heard of you or know what you do exactly, obviously, other than being a comedian.
Can you tell us a little bit about your background and where you grew up and how you got into stand-up?
Yeah.
So I, uh, born and raised in West Alice, Wisconsin.
And, uh, you know, pause for people to either groan or, you know, uh, recoil.
Um, and, um, yeah, basically it was when I went to Carthage College in Kenosha.
that I joined stand-up comedy club
and
that was my start into it I guess I just did it to do something new and I also I don't know my friends and family thought that I was funny so
I
gave it a shot and and it went well enough that I kept doing it but I always say if I had bombed that first time we wouldn't be here today no
kidding
Do you think it's that way with a lot of people because I remember the first time I ever did it was at a coffee house at DePaul University Coffee house theater.
They called it was a once a year thing Very friendly crowd and I'm with you.
I don't know that I don't know that the person that goes up and bombs the first night Do they go back?
Do you know people like that?
I think so and what's crazier is like There's levels to it like I had it the best doing it at my college in front of other students
then you with the coffee house.
But I mean, everyone else I know is doing it in a bar late at night.
Half the people don't want you to be doing it.
You know, it's just like the worst environment.
And yeah, I know people who go up for the first time bomb don't do it for like two years and then go back.
Yeah.
because they just have it, it's still inside them and they know they can do better, right?
It just takes
a
while to get the courage up, maybe?
I guess so.
And yeah, they do a lot of watching, taking mental notes, but yeah, could never be me.
All right, so you're from West Dallas.
Is that a good place to be from?
You mentioned groans or recoiling.
Do you get jokes based on the fact that you're from there?
Is it a funny city to be from?
I joke a little bit about it.
It just has a reputation where people joke about it.
I mean, it's just a really blue collar town.
And so, yeah, I can always start off a set in Wisconsin and talk a little bit about that because, you know, people know about it.
And you could talk about state fair because that's where it is.
You can it opens up a lot.
Isn't it?
Is Tom Clark from West Alice?
Isn't he from there?
Do you know time?
I don't know if technically West Dallas, but like another surrounding suburb, maybe like Wauwatosa.
But yeah, Tom Clark is a great guy.
Yeah, he's great.
Well, I know you did some work for the State Fair recently.

You talked about your family thinking you were funny and your friends.
When did you think, was it after the first time you went up or was it before that where you thought, I have to try this.
I know I can do this.
mean it was a combination of like right before colleges when I started getting into stand-up myself like I was finding like Janine Garofalo clips on YouTube and just thinking like it totally shattered the small idea of what I thought stand-up was.
I thought it was very much like one liner, like set up punchline, whatever, and she wasn't doing any of that.
She was totally, she was very brave, right?
With her approach, she would just talk about stuff.
Yeah, just talking, like just saying things in a funny way, like a funny vocabulary or whatever, not just like, you know, the stuff.
that, I don't know, some pop culture makes you think it
is.

When I did stand up, I was based out of Chicago.
Milwaukee truly was
was my favorite city to work.
The crowds were fantastic.
There was the comedy cafe on Brady Street.
I know they moved downtown and now they're gone.
And the laughing tap is there, which I understand is a great room as well.
What are your favorite rooms to work in Milwaukee and around the state?
Oh, man, that's a great question.
Well, the laughing tap comes to mind as number one, like you mentioned.
Great.
It's an intimate space that's always shown me a lot of love and the owners there have given me a lot of opportunity, you know, from hosting up until headlining in early December.
I got to.
So that comes to mind, but, you know, it's a cliche, but comedy on state then in Madison is, you know, by many regarded as the best in the country.
Yeah.
But, you know,
Yeah, kind of the obvious ones are the best.
Do you have favorite clubs outside of the state?
Do you like cities in particular you like to travel to or do you stand up in?
Well, I've only been to Ann Arbor once.
I went last month, but they've got a club there.
And it's a great city.
It's a college town.
That club was electric.
So that's a new favorite I hope to get to.
It's called a comedy cast.
Ann Arbor comedy showcase.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
Go ahead.
Sorry.
Oh, I'm sorry.
I'm going to do Grand Rapids in June.
So it's like now I'm hitting Michigan.

Was that a was that weird headlining for the first time in your hometown?
They always say there's a famous phrase.
It's hardest to headline in your hometown.
What was that like in making that jump from feature where you only have to do like maybe 25 or 30 minutes to an extra 15 or 20 minutes?
Well, it's certainly I mean features is usually the sweet spot Yeah, but I would say the hardest part about like headlining at the laughing tap for friends and family is that like You appreciate the support and love from friends and family, but
I find the worst thing is to look into a crowd and lock eyes with somebody you know.
Like, that's the worst.
I'd rather perform in front of strangers, even though that sounds like I'm not appreciating the support, you know?
No, I totally get that.
That's great.

I don't want to say it.

The only thing I would want to say is June 11th, we're doing a big benefit for the Alzheimer's Association in West Bend.
So there's a huge lineup, including Charlie Barron's
Johnny Beiner, Rachel Mack, Chastity Washington, so that'll be a great one.
Wow, that's fantastic.
You have, just in reading about you today, you were a fellow English major.
I was also an English major.
And you also have, you studied film studies, which I think is great, because that's where I ended up going to for my stand-up days.
Was English, was that a good major for someone?
It is, right?
For someone who wants to be a comedian.
I mean, words are so important.
I think so.
I definitely have noticed that there are a lot of English majors like within the Milwaukee comedy scene and in general.
But yeah, anything that makes you write makes you expand your vocabulary.
Yeah, and really illuminates that a word can make a huge difference.
That's going to help for sure.
Where do you stand on the Oxford comma?
Oh my gosh, I've flip-flopped throughout my life.
I was a strong yes, I was a strong no, and now I kind of take its situation by situation.
That's fantastic.
It's
funny, I know you're joking, but I used to not think it was necessary, and as I've gotten older, I think it's very necessary.
It's
crazy.
Pete, I'm not even joking.
I see it both ways.
I can't pick a side.
That's fair.
Who are your favorite, you maybe just mentioned some of them, but Wisconsin I've learned is a great comedy state.
I mean, I love the clubs here when I did stand up, but I wasn't based here.
Now that I've lived here for several years, I cannot believe how many great comedians there are here.
Do you have favorites in our state that are your favorite comedians to watch?
Sure.
Well, I mean, ones that are already, you know, big, like Mary Mack and Jackie Cation, they're from Wisconsin
and
they are
just absolute annihilators.
But then as far as names that people don't know but should, yeah, Chastity Washington out of Milwaukee is an absolute killer.
Johnny Beener was the last stand up comic on David Letterman.
I
love that stat.
Yeah, that's so great.
Isn't that something?
My God.
And then yeah, Rachel Mack was on David Spade's late night show.
She lived in LA but has come back.
Oh, wow.
And so a ton of heavy hitters, yeah.
Yeah, a lot of those people have been on this show.
I'm not familiar with Rachel Mack though.
We'll have to look into her and see.
And Chassidy Washington.
And what about comedians from elsewhere?
And who are your influences, Dana?
So Janine Garofalo was a big one.
I mentioned kind of, I loved seeing her in movies.
And then when I discovered her stand up, that was huge.
And Maria Bamford.
Um, not Wisconsin, but Minnesota definitely has a Midwest, uh, you know, personality and her standups been very influential.
Um, and Rachel Feinstein, I think is another that just pushed me to do the talk about the kinds of things that I talk about.
You seem like, at least in the clips I've seen, you work fairly clean.
Is that important to you?
Well, I think it's important to be able to.
I've added some things that are a little dirtier, but to not be able to, I think, shuts you out of a lot of opportunity.
So I think everybody should at least strive to have those 15 or 20 minutes to open themselves up to other gigs.
But I don't feel a need to be one way or the other.
Okay, that's that's a great answer.

Is there a comedy style Dana that you can't stand or that makes your skin crawl?
or comics, if you don't mind mentioning them, but you don't have to.
I don't know if there's anything I can't stand.
I mean, I think anything can be done or anything can be talked about if it's done well, right?
It's just like those that don't do it well.
But no, I'm always amazed at people who are more animated than I am, because I'm very kind of just dry and
and monotone so I'm always into seeing people that are different than me.
That's
that's fantastic.
So what what clubs do you have any club dates coming up we can share with people?
Oh man well I just got done with the Kenosha Comedy Club with Chris Katan and Greg Schwem.
Greg and I doing back to bed weekends together.
Okay.
But yeah club dates
right now, not until I hit Grand Rapids in June.
So, but things, you know, the thing about getting booked at clubs is, um, it can be very last minute.
So hopefully something comes up with the Milwaukee improv or laughing tap or comedy on state.
between now and then.

That's probably the best way to stay clued in.
You also, I noticed online you covered the state fair last year.
Was that a good
place
to get material?
Do you like talking to people and thinking off the cuff and that kind of stuff?
Well, you know, it wasn't totally just like man on the street.
Like crowd work and improv and thinking on my feet are definitely skills I need to be better at, but.
Yeah, I just choose silly things to try there or, you know, I did the slingshot ride where they fling you up into the air and I just made a video about that.
I've talked to people about, you know, the box outside of the milk stand.
I mean, if none of that's making sense to the listeners, you just have to go to the state fair.
But yeah, it's a.
Fantastic place.
I go multiple times every year.
So you are a Wisconsin girl through and through.
You went to Carthage College.
You started your stand-up career here.
And it seems like you're most at home here.
You also were a film studies major or minor?
Minor, yeah.
OK.
What are your favorite movies?
Because we talk about movies and TV on this show a lot.
What kind of movies do you like to watch?
And what have you seen lately that you could recommend?
Okay, okay, so I mean one of my all-time favorites is a league of their own I just think it's got everything.
It's funny.
It's sad.
It's historical, you know Lately I've seen a documentary It's called secret mall apartment It's about
that.
Yeah, it's about this mall and Rhode Island To build it they knocked down a lot of housing
And a group of artists did a performance art piece, and they found an abandoned place in that mall to create an apartment, kind of sticking it to the man.

I think that's a show better binged.

What did you think about that?

See that's a bummer because I was gonna start it and I will I'll watch it but now it's like not at the top of my list when before I couldn't wait to get to it because I want to have John Gries back on the show too.
But I want to see it before he
It comes back.
So, and I did start watching Mobland over the weekend.
I watched the first two episodes of that.
And I like it.
Tom Hardy's good.
Pierce Brosnan.
It's nothing new yet, but it is a guy, Richie Show.
He's a great director.
So I'll stick with that.
But what do you think about?
I'm interested to get your perspective on this.
Like, I remember Jay Leno, when I was a young comic, he would say, don't make fun of people for something they can't control.
Like, if there's a guy sitting up front,
in a wheelchair, you don't make fun of him for the fact that he can't walk.
You could do something else, but don't go after something he can't control.
This girl, this Amy Lou Wood who was on White Lotus, Saturday Night Live made fun of her teeth and they had a girl, one of their cast members play her in a sketch and she had like very exaggerated teeth.
Like I kind of still feel like
Jay Leno like he was a phenomenal comedian I did did not I was not a huge fan of his hosting abilities on the tonight show when he was one of the best Stand-ups ever and I still kind of subscribe to that like why do you have to make fun of people for something that like she's big teeth Why is it funny?
I don't know am I wrong here?
No, no, I don't what's your take as a young fella?

And she was hurt by it too.
She
social media and said, you know, I thought this was mean.
I like the show.
I watched it two weeks ago.
I thought it was hilarious.
But she thought, you know, and it's like, why do you have to make someone feel like crap for something they have no control
So I don't know.
That was kind of a strange one.
So we have to, we have to think of a, I already have a question for tomorrow.
I'm not gonna let it out yet, but.
Great movies, folks.
If you're looking for something to watch in the theaters, I did this in the beats that will come out tomorrow.
But of the top five films that as far as grosses go at the box office, Minecraft is number one.
That is the lowest rated, or in terms of critics liking it, very mediocre reviews.
But the next four films, there is really something for everybody.
There's a thriller, there's a war film, there's a religious film.
King of Kings got good reviews, Warfare got amazing reviews, The Amateur was rated fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and then Drop got good reviews too.
So there is a lot to see out there, because this is a holiday weekend, new films will come out obviously, but your Adam Sandler film will not be one of them.

Sometimes people flip out over Sandler, and I don't get it.
I feel like he just does this character that I just want to scream.
But he is a very funny guy.
His
song parodies on Saturday
Night
Live.
He's a great stand-up.
But in movie form I have trouble with some of his films.
I like some of them, but I
than the one you were just talking about the Wexler
plays Jill that's horrible.
I've told you in the past on this show And here's why I can't for a long time anyway.
I could not criticize Adam Sandler It's because he and I were both on a CD-ROM
that came out before DVDs or whatever when the networks would put out their promotional stuff.
His picture and my picture were on the cover of the CD-ROM for Comedy Central.
So I still have that laying around the house and my son saw it when he was like 12 and he's like, is this why you don't like Adam Sandler?
Because he's this rich, successful, crazy movie star and you're you.
Like, and first of all, he was already famous when they made this.
I had a couple of guys at Comedy Central that just liked me, so they put me on there.
But forever in my family, I'm compared to that, which is not fair.
So...
it.
Just do it.
If you're a real actor, go for it.
Oh, I like where this is going.
