Summertime culture.
It was 20 years ago.
The movie theater shook, rattled, and exploded.
A couple of giant disaster blockbusters.
Has it been that long?
Independence Day.
Sawed at the Kino Drive-In.
And Twister.
Both those theaters gone This was just a couple of weeks apart talking about extreme weather alien invasion Plenty of popcorn on a scale we'd never seen before Twister with Helen Hunt Bill Paxton Bill Paxton not to be confused with Bill Pullman
The guy is chasing all across the Midwest these monstrous tornadoes.
And then independence day with landmarks blowing up and huge spacecraft and a presidential speech from Bill Pullman.
Not to be confused with Bill Paxley.
Great stuff.
In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world.
And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind.
Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom.
Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation.
We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.
And should we win the day,
The 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday.

This was the time.

Al was useless, utterly useless.
He told his sister in a letter, quote, I am nothing but a burden to my family.
Really, it would have been better if I had never been born.
He had been taken out of school as a youngster because he was what we would now consider retarded.
Remember what I just said?
He had been taken out of school because he was considered what we would now call retarded and had to be tutored at home by his mother By the age of 22 Al had hit bottom His parents impoverished were no longer able to support him He needed a job but nobody would hire him and so in desperation Al appealed to an old school friend a fellow whose class notes he used to copy The friend's father had government connections and a few days later Al was being interviewed for a position at the federal patent office
Fred Haller was then director of the agency.
He would conduct the interview personally.
Haller informed the young man that he needed personnel capable of judging whether a request for a patent had any justification.
What do you know about patents?
The director asked.
Now said nothing.
Didn't know a thing about patents.
The director arched an eyebrow under ordinary circumstances.
He would have terminated the interview right then and there.
Yet there was something, I guess,
There must have been something intriguing in the young man's frankness.
The director said, tell me a little bit about yourself, and Al forced to smile.
What was there to tell?
He'd been thrown out of high school at the age of 15.
And with no high school diploma, college had been out of the question.
So he applied at a technical school, but he flunked the entrance exam.
So he went back to high school, a different one, actually, because his old high school refused it to readmit him.
This time he did manage to graduate.
He was even accepted at technical school and yet when potential employers subsequently discovered that he had cut classes chronically, that he had passed his exams only very narrowly, that he had treated his professors irreverently, nobody would hire him.
So Al had the word loser written all over him.
Now here he was in the federal patent office asking for a job for which he was not qualified.
But director Haller was a very patient man, I guess.
He'd heard all of the reasons why he should not hire Al.
Now he wanted to hear some reasons why he should.
And remarkably, that interview continued for most of two hours.
And by the time it was over, the director had come to this conclusion.
Al was not stupid.
He had not been retarded.
He was simply a failure.
And if he were ever to stop failing and make something of himself,
It would first require a large dose of self-confidence.
From somewhere, he was going to have to get some self-confidence.
So Director Haller decided to give Al a break, a probationary job as technical expert third class.
Posterity's impressions of Al is larger than life.
He was not inexorably destined to guide lesser minds through space and time.
In fact, at the age of 22, he stood at the brink of utter uselessness.
Until at long last somebody took a chance on him and gave him a job at the Swiss Federal Patent Office.
And inspired by his first unequivocal success, he eventually learned to live up to his best.
And from that beginning became the incomparable genius the world knows as Albert Einstein.
And now you know the rest of the story.
27 years old, and I'm only a junior executive.
I'm not getting any younger.

Have you got it?
Macaroni was a catch-all term in England for the scene-sters of the time who sat between the Restoration Era fop and the dandy on the historical timeline of trendy looks.
They were called macaronis because when they left England, usually on mommy and daddy's dime, they toured Europe and brought back this totally amazing new pasta they discovered in Italy.
It was, yeah, macaroni.
drawn wagons and carriages.
He painted furniture too, earned him a good living and a decent professional reputation.
But the wagon painter from Bedford, Ohio had a sense of humor, something he suppressed while trimming a carriage and expressed instead in humorous drawings.
Now those sideline sketches depicted children, mostly children, in funny everyday situations.
Every now and then Archie sold one of them.
But this is the rest of the story, July 4, 1875.
Archie went down to the parade ground in Wellington.
To watch the holiday festivities, yet despite the pomp and the ceremony and the shiny buttoned uniforms, it was a small group of unadorned yet enthusiastic participants that caught his eye.
They were not really part of the parade, yet their dancing and their prancing and their pretend to soldiering were so hilarious that Archie decided to sketch them.
He characterized them as proud, preening, fresh-faced army recruits eager for battle and yet still clad.

Well, Archie took that sketch to a friend, a photographer named Jim Ryder, and asked how do you like it.
Jim responded any other way than the way he did.
We probably would not be talking about either of them today.
But what Archie's photographer friend said was, in essence, please friend, get serious.
There was nothing wrong with the funny drawings, he told Archie, but lurking behind the humor of those pompous paraders was a something powerful.
Take that same scene, Jim Ryder advised, and let the drama emerge.
Archie took his friend's advice.
The wagon fader got a couple of acquaintances and his own father, a Baptist minister, to pose for the three main characters in the revised portrait.
And when that one was completed, Archie's delighted photographer friend helped him make Chromolithograph copies, a few dozen at first, then a few hundred, and they sold for $10 a piece.
10,000 chromolithographs later Archie and Jim were rich men.
Archie repainted that portrait some 14 times with minor variations, but the three principal characters remained the same.
Their faces were modeled after a neighbor named Hugh Mosher and a boy named Harry Devereaux and the artist's preacher father, Samuel, who's determined to visit glares for all time.

Archie, whose career as a serious portraitist began in his 40th year, was soon recognized exclusively as such, and yet for all of the dignified portraits he would subsequently paint.
None ever achieved the renown of that one that began as a gag.
The painting based on the sketch, originally entitled Fourth of July Musicians, for you see the three principal subjects of that drawing,
of the three jubilant celebrants prancing around Wellington Parade Ground.
One was playing a fife, and the other two were beating on drums, and you, of course, know what happened.
When artist Archie, Archibald Willard, transformed those men from parade ground clowns to revolutionary war soldiers, and retitled the work Spirit of 76, only now you know the rest of the story.

When you make a picture like Run for Cover, and then you see the picture after you've made it, is there some one particular scene that you'd prefer
over others?
Oh, there's always one.

you have a kind of a feeling for.
And we were just running it here to match the movement.
It's a scene where the boy...
The boy loses confidence in himself when, after he finds out that the leg is no longer going to be used to him.
And I try to re-establish his confidence by making him climb up the chair and fighting his way to his feet.
And he refuses, you know, that one.
Well, that was
the one.
And we're just showing it to match some movement.

And would you

Jim that's a tremendously powerful scene, but there

He acted at the top of his bent, and he never hammed for one moment.
Thus proving my point that hamming is not overacting.
It is false acting.
It's fakery.
And there's not a fake minute in a Cagney movie.

There
was a lawyer once, his name was Francis Scott Key.
He penned a song that I'm sure you're aware of.
You've seen it.
It's in most hymnals throughout our churches.
It's called the National Anthem.
It is our song as an American.
We go, however, to a ball game.
We stand in our church services and we sing the words of that song and they float over our minds and our lives and we don't even realize what we're singing.
Most of us have memorized it as a child, but we've never really thought about what it means.
Let me tell you a story.
Francis Scott Key was a lawyer in Baltimore.
The colonies were engaged in vicious conflict with the mother country, Britain.
Because of this conflict and the protractedness of it, they had accumulated prisoners on both sides.
The American colonies had prisoners and the British had prisoners.
And the American government initiated a move.
They went to the British and they said, let us negotiate for the release of these prisoners.
They said, we want to send a man out to discuss this with you.
They were holding the American prisoners in boats.
about a thousand yards offshore and they said we want to send a man by the name of Francis Scott Key he will come out and negotiate to see if we can make a mutual exchange on the appointed day in a row boat he went out to this boat and he negotiated with the British officials and they reached a conclusion that men could be exchanged on a one-for-one basis Francis Scott Key jubilant with the fact that he'd been successful went down below in the boats and what he found was a cargo hold full of humanity men
And he said, men, I've got news for you tonight, you're free.
He said, tonight I have negotiated successfully your return to the colonies.
He said, you'll be taken out of this boat, out of this spilt, out of your chains.
As he went back up on board to arrange for their passage to the shore, the admiral came and he said, we have a slight problem.
He said, we will still honor our commitment to release these men, but it'll be merely academic after tonight.
It won't matter.
And Francis Scott Key said, what do you mean?
He said, well, Mr. Key, he said tonight we have laid an ultimatum upon the colonies.

But the actual theme, which was in the beginning of the picture,
Wasn't written for a summer place at all.
He pulled it out of a file cabinet.
It was originally written for Twilight of the Gods.
Two years earlier.
And it was rejected.
No matter your marital status, there are perhaps lessons to be learned by watching fictional people struggle through the minefields of modern romance.
Up first, a steamy, melodramatic tale of two adults, each married to someone else who rekindled a romance from their youth, while at the same time, their two teenage kids begin a romance of their own.
From 1959, it's a summer place.
Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire stars the adults who rediscover their passion for each other while
rising stars Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee are the young lovers.
The saga is given a lush and lavish Technicolor treatment by director Delmer Dave's who until this film had success directing tough guys in westerns film noir and war movies.
Even though a summer place was a departure for Dave's he made it a hit and following the box office success of a summer place Warner Brothers continued to give Dave's more melodramas to direct.
Summer place was not a hit with critics but they weren't the film's target audience anyway they
hardly ever are.
The target audience, women and teens, came to see the film in droves and it remains an appealing picture.
Some are touched by the emotional rawness of the characters, caught up in a passion they can't control, while others see it as a guilty pleasure of unintentional over-the-top performances.
Either way though, it's effective entertainment.
From Warner Brothers in 1959, also starring Arthur Kennedy and Constance Ford with a memorable score by composer Max Steiner.

We've been past the half of it for a while, but the unofficial halfway point of the season with the All-Star break upon us.
This has been a historical first half for the crew.
And yet I think the manager will tell you he thinks the best baseball is still in front of us.
He
did just tell us that.
media session he had this morning with the writers said the best way I would describe this team has been inconsistent and that doesn't seem to fit a team that has the second best record in major league baseball right but you're I think you're right Lane in reading and he feels like there's more in the tank for this glorious club which if that's the case if they've got another year that they can find once we come out of the all-star break then good luck to everybody that they're gonna be playing absolutely yesterday was a frustrating day because both games
were right there and we're so used to
but they were on the wrong
end of the problem.
Yeah,
one run
game where they had a big lead in game one and they lose it on a grand slam.
And one run game where they just couldn't get that big hit.
They were one for eight with runners in scoring position at the nightcap yesterday.
We had a
lot of games like that in the first half.
I think that's one of the things that Murph would say we could improve upon is limiting those games where we lose a lot of chances to score runs.
I think
the
first game you just chalk it up to, there was a young 22-year-old rookie that had
have their work cut out for them today.
They're going to face Paul Skeens, who maybe hasn't put up the numbers he put up the last two years in the league, but he's still one of the best visitors in the National League.
I don't think anybody would argue anything different, but they did a great job against Braxton Ashcraft yesterday, who's actually had the better year than Skeens to this point.
