Like promises we made How could a love that seemed so right Go wrong The things we did last summer

It's summertime.

That's right.

Snuck up on us.

Good morning.

Music of the Stars is

on.

The Civic Media Radio Network.

Now, what a summer day it's going to be.

On this day, we'll look at later days.

I say a steam bath is returning.

Never understood that when it rains, it gets hotter afterward, but when it snows, it gets colder afterward.

Somebody explain.

We're on a high noon central, but not really because on some of our stations, we're being preempted at about, oh, 20 to 11 central time.

Ball game.

But we're always on the air at WRJN.com, our flagship station for the music of the

stars.

When the silence quietly whispered.

And all the way I'll velvet you, clover you.

I'll wrap you up and ribbon you, rainbow you, and shower.

Michelle LeGrand and the Bergmans, Alan and Marilyn.

What computer?

What did I say?

Computer?

I said computer?

Oh, that sounds like a confuser.

When the Bergmans take over a song, it doesn't get any better.

But then summer times, the perfect excuse to soak up that Wisconsin sunshine and slow down.

Let laziness become respectable for a change Doris day and dinah shore dinah had the the idea all along Johnny Mercer Michelle the grand

Here's Bob Grebel, I have to tell you about him.

This is from Lady and the Tramp.

Peggy Lee had a lot to do with the music, and Bob, there's a

They have stars in their eyes on this lovely bell and nothing.

Dizzy claw

Take...

What was that again?

Bob what?

He said Bob something.

I didn't catch that.

And that's all right.

Bob Grobo, G-R-A-B-E-A-U.

I know you never heard of him.

50 year career.

That doesn't tell you anything, does it?

You've heard him sing many times, without knowing it.

Started teaching singing, he did, California.

But he's born in Pittsburgh, California.

Yeah, there is such a town.

Night of Alzheimer's, June the 8th, 2008.

I happened to be on the air that day.

And I did a couple of hours of his music that I could find.

What was going on?

The television studios in LA were hiring Bob to teach their stars how to sing.

Christy McNichol was one student.

a copy of the Time Life Swing series.

That's Bob's voice on a lot of those.

I'll have more from Bob in just a bit.

The Music of the Stars on the Civic Media Radio Network.

I'm just brazen along with a breeze.

Oh, that's crazy.

And a trail in the rails.

Uh-huh.

Ooh, we're all in the seas.

Let me get the brushes here now.

The life of the bird is a sail in the trees.

Pleasant to live, and to live into peace.

The sky is the only roof that I have over my head.

Mother nature makes me a bed.

Just going along as I please.

I'm breezing along with a breeze.

That old breeze.

Oh well, I'm just breezing along with a breeze.

Trailing the rails and the romanese.

I train and I raise and I fall when I see the breeze.

Television, television.

I'm sick of it.

Television, television.

Hey, Mr. General Public, do you realize that we got a generation here of staring eyes?

The women never bother getting housework done They just sit around gawking at television The kiddies never run and playing out of door On top of that they never reading books no more You ask them who's the father of our countrymen They say was either Walt Disney or Ed Sullivan

sneaking in and break the latch while grandma she is looking on the wrestling match she throws him on the floor although she's 90 years old she says I got him with a step over toe hole I turn on Elvis Presley and my daughter screams I fear she having nervous breakdown cause of him I wonder why he wiggle waggle to the beat as a boy he must have had a loose bicycle seat

I got the wig in the eyes, wig in the head likewise From sitting and looking on television The children of the country eat their dinner you bet But they eat it sitting in front of the TV set They got pudding in their ears from the north to the south From eating while watching and missing their mouth

Last night the very unusual thing occurred.

The baby he is saying his very first word.

I have him on my shoulder for to make him burp.

Instead he open his mouth and say, Wyatt Earp.

Oh, television, television.

I'm sick of it.

Television, television.

I watched the late, late movie then I climbed the stairs.

Get into bed and have television nightmares.

Complete with bad.

Commercials that repeat all night Both incompatible color and black and white Someday my son grow up and want to go to sea So we probably go and try to join US Navy They give him aptitude test, man Now here's the rub They find him best suited For watching Mickey Mouse Club

Music of the Star.

Tonight I have a friend with me here who is hooked on TV.

Jim, when did you first contract the TV habit?

Three years ago, can I became a idiot?

Vidiot?

Is this a term that I don't understand too much about being?

Well, that's what we people call ourselves.

Vidiots.

Yeah.

Well, how did this happen?

How did you get into this terrible situation that has torn your soul so far apart?

Oh, it was when I started watching, uh, Milton Berle.

Milton Burrell.

I

got sort of wrapped up.

Was this a friend

of yours?

No, he's a fellow that's on television.

Oh, I see.

I see you don't watch television very much,

huh?

Well, I have had other interests and that's why I... But we're discussing you.

Oh,

yeah.

Milton Burrell was the fellow that put you on this

show.

Yeah, I got it wrapped up in the show.

It just...

Just sort of thing that made me feel relaxed and forget my troubles and worries

We just started out with a just a watching a little bit Yeah,

just a little bit a few hours a day at first

and then How much are you watching now?

Well, I figure it's 15 hours 15

hours and you how long do you sleep?

Oh, I usually get about

four, five hours sleep?

Oh, I see.

That leaves 15 hours that you watch TV and four or five hours that... How long do you work?

Four or five hours a day?

Yeah,

when I work.

Oh, there are days when you don't even work, you

just... I can't.

Why not?

I have to watch television.

Oh.

Well, unless...

I got a TV set in my car, too.

You know that?

In your car?

No.

Well, that will have to go right away.

Well, they say it's illegal, but I don't care.

I can't miss Godfrey.

And do you realize I'm missing Steve Allen right now?

I had no idea.

Who is this?

This is the longest I've been away from a set in two years.

Steve Allen,

is this some friend of yours that you watch television with?

He's on television.

Well, the same

way you're on

television.

Just on television.

He's a star on television.

What do you mean?

He's one of the guys that you're hooked with.

I mean, you watch him?

Yeah.

Yeah.

What does he give you?

Uh, entertainment.

Makes me laugh.

Makes me forget my worries.

Well, you mustn't have any worries at all if you're watching television.

Fifteen

hours a day.

Well, that's why I came here.

I do.

And I don't know just why I have them.

What's your

problem?

I shouldn't have your worries.

I'm Steve Allen.

All right, get your hands up.

We've got an arresting show with a great lineup.

I'm talking about singers Joe Williams and the five Americans.

TV star Nancy Cope.

And your favorite comedian Jack Carter.

And here is the star of our show, Steve Allen.

Pain starting

right

there.

Ow, I'm gonna have a set.

You've got to have

a set.

Turn on

that set when you can.

No, that set is

not

connected.

That is not...

Turn it on, will you?

That's starting to get these pains.

Listen, I don't care who's on television right

now.

Oh, Ken!

There's probably

nothing but an

old, late movie.

I don't care.

It's not worth

it.

Turn it on, please.

Listen, read this book.

Here,

try this.

Here's a little Adler comic book,

ma'am.

All

right.

Let me help you.

Let me

help you.

I'll just let you watch for a few seconds.

There

you are.

Oh, that's much better.

All right.

See, there it is.

Shameful.

Shameful.

Shameful.

Shameful.

Shameful.

Oh, that's great.

Oh, there's

nothing I can do for

you.

No, I think you're going to have to give yourself up.

You're beyond my treatment.

I think that's all you can do is to just give yourself up.

You can turn it off for a minute now.

I'll run right home and watch it.

See you later,

Ken.

Well, one of the many problems that I face... Wait a minute.

I think I'll...

Turn the set on myself

Now's the time to say goodbye to all our companions

I see K-E-Y-E-M-O-U-S

How's the time to say goodbye to all our company?

beautiful

it's in black and white and there's a lovely musician standing in the center of the screen he's got a guitar

and he's got he's all hair

I'm really looking forward to eating this with you today.

Let's start the show now.

Then we see newsy with shaking in this crazy old world of ours.

The music of the stars.

Happy summer.

Here's a look at the stars.

Summertime culture.

It was 20 years ago.

The movie theater shook, rattled, and exploded.

A couple of giant disaster blockbusters.

Has it been that long?

Independence Day.

Sawed at the Kino Drive-In.

And Twister.

Both those theaters gone This was just a couple of weeks apart talking about extreme weather alien invasion Plenty of popcorn on a scale we'd never seen before Twister with Helen Hunt Bill Paxton Bill Paxton not to be confused with Bill Pullman

The guy is chasing all across the Midwest these monstrous tornadoes.

And then independence day with landmarks blowing up and huge spacecraft and a presidential speech from Bill Pullman.

Not to be confused with Bill Paxley.

Great stuff.

In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world.

And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind.

Mankind, that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom.

Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation.

We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.

And should we win the day,

The 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday.

But as the day when the world declared in one voice, we will not go quietly into the night.

We will not vanish without a fight.

We're going to live on.

We're going to survive.

Today, we celebrate our Independence Day.

We separate the notes from the notes The men from the boys The rose from the boys And I'll be back in the bunch I came up with a hunch This was an open Adam's Day Yes, it's one of those bells When you hear the right bells And your horoscope found you too sad

This was the time.

of the story.

Al was useless, utterly useless.

He told his sister in a letter, quote, I am nothing but a burden to my family.

Really, it would have been better if I had never been born.

He had been taken out of school as a youngster because he was what we would now consider retarded.

Remember what I just said?

He had been taken out of school because he was considered what we would now call retarded and had to be tutored at home by his mother By the age of 22 Al had hit bottom His parents impoverished were no longer able to support him He needed a job but nobody would hire him and so in desperation Al appealed to an old school friend a fellow whose class notes he used to copy The friend's father had government connections and a few days later Al was being interviewed for a position at the federal patent office

Fred Haller was then director of the agency.

He would conduct the interview personally.

Haller informed the young man that he needed personnel capable of judging whether a request for a patent had any justification.

What do you know about patents?

The director asked.

Now said nothing.

Didn't know a thing about patents.

The director arched an eyebrow under ordinary circumstances.

He would have terminated the interview right then and there.

Yet there was something, I guess,

There must have been something intriguing in the young man's frankness.

The director said, tell me a little bit about yourself, and Al forced to smile.

What was there to tell?

He'd been thrown out of high school at the age of 15.

And with no high school diploma, college had been out of the question.

So he applied at a technical school, but he flunked the entrance exam.

So he went back to high school, a different one, actually, because his old high school refused it to readmit him.

This time he did manage to graduate.

He was even accepted at technical school and yet when potential employers subsequently discovered that he had cut classes chronically, that he had passed his exams only very narrowly, that he had treated his professors irreverently, nobody would hire him.

So Al had the word loser written all over him.

Now here he was in the federal patent office asking for a job for which he was not qualified.

But director Haller was a very patient man, I guess.

He'd heard all of the reasons why he should not hire Al.

Now he wanted to hear some reasons why he should.

And remarkably, that interview continued for most of two hours.

And by the time it was over, the director had come to this conclusion.

Al was not stupid.

He had not been retarded.

He was simply a failure.

And if he were ever to stop failing and make something of himself,

It would first require a large dose of self-confidence.

From somewhere, he was going to have to get some self-confidence.

So Director Haller decided to give Al a break, a probationary job as technical expert third class.

Posterity's impressions of Al is larger than life.

He was not inexorably destined to guide lesser minds through space and time.

In fact, at the age of 22, he stood at the brink of utter uselessness.

Until at long last somebody took a chance on him and gave him a job at the Swiss Federal Patent Office.

And inspired by his first unequivocal success, he eventually learned to live up to his best.

And from that beginning became the incomparable genius the world knows as Albert Einstein.

And now you know the rest of the story.

27 years old, and I'm only a junior executive.

I'm not getting any younger.

You've got a wonderful career ahead of you.

Oh,

no.

I've lost the vision.

Well, I haven't.

Now you listen to me, Jeff.

I'm glad I am.

I'm a real-life Yankee doo-doo.

Made my name and fame and boo.

Just as Mr. Doodle did by riding on a pony.

I love to listen to the nixie-strain.

I long to see the girl I left behind me.

That ain't a charge.

She's a Yankee by God.

Anything about a Yankee that's all pony.

Little Johnny chose the jockey from the USA.

We'll ride the pony Yankee Doodle English Dobby Day.

So Yankee Doodle's gonna be the boy they have to beat.

But

all the money in the bank of England couldn't pay.

Enough to keep young Johnny Jones away from old

Have your houses, Morgan, up your watches, on your rings.

And

put it all

on Yankee Doodle, Johnny, don't mess up.

I'm gonna give America the English Dobby Cup.

I'm a Yankee Doodle Bandy.

Yankee Doodle do or die.

A real life nephew of mine.

She's my Yankee Doodle Joy.

Yankee Doodle came to London just to ride the ponies.

Jimmy didn't get more credits for his dancing

capability.

And America has always gone forward on the sound of marching feet to the military beat of drums, drums, drums, helping to hold the banner high, stirring the heart.

of her fighting man this then is the spirit of 76

what do you mean you're walking off the job

like I'm walking off the job man I don't have to work with that kind of a square drummer well

I don't

see

I mean, when I accepted the gig, I didn't know I was going to have to play fife with the kind of moldy fig... Well, we certainly... ...drumming like what is going on up ahead there, man.

No.

Moldy, uh...

Now, the kid here is on second drums, and the kid is swinging pretty good, but we can't make it swing with that other cat, dick.

You tell him, Bix.

Look here now.

We're engaged in battle.

The army's depending on

you.

Well, too bad, man.

Like you're back here holding the flag, you don't have to walk next to him, you know?

Well, what exactly is your objection to the man?

Well, in the first place, anybody with a name like Yankee... Doodle.

Yeah, well, the name says it, man, you know.

Yes, but what is the main problem?

Like, it's a toss-up between the drumming and the singing, man.

The singing.

I've got a bandage around my ears, but it doesn't help much.

It's a bedside.

Well, let's walk back up there and talk to him, see if we can't straighten it out.

Yeah, well, you know.

All right, Doodle, the fife player and the other drummer want to leave.

Now, what seems to be the trouble?

They're out of step with me.

That's...

What's the trouble is that true?

Wow, he wants to play yep up up up up up up up and a lot of go Scoopy-doopy-doopy-doop ba-oo ba-oo ba-oo here ba-oo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

Let's get on with the procession here, gracious.

Yes, now let's make an effort and play it like Doodle wants

to.

Yeah,

well, it's

a drag.

Get on with the marching here.

Father and I went down to camp along with Captain Gooding.

There we saw the men and boys as thick as hasty everybody.

Lanky Doodle, keep it up.

I'll keep it up and we'll blow the whole wall.

I'm the music and the step and wh...

That's it.

I'm hip.

That's it.

Come on, pick up your instruments

there.

No, that's it, man.

Watch the trouble now.

It's a bad scene, man, right?

Bad scene, Bix.

Come on, you're holding up the whole parade.

Let's stop the bickering and the ranks here.

Do you want the war to end on a note of triumph or disaster?

Like either way, man.

Just so it swings.

Now look.

Scooby-Doo.

Let's reach a compromise here.

Play it eight bars your way and eight bars Doodle's.

All right.

Crazy.

Okay,

out

of

the

way,

man.

Well that was pretty rude.

Put a trombone to his lips and swung his mighty dandy Yankee doodle.

Play it loud!

Or now play it soft.

We'll go back there, pa.

Jack Teagarden on the big band, and...

All right, chipmunks.

We're gonna sing for the people, so are you all ready to go?

Simon?

I'm ready.

Theodore?

Sure.

Alvin?

Alvin?

Alvin!

Chris, Chris, Chris!

No, no, Alvin.

This is Yankee Doodle, and the words are, Yankee Doodle went to town riding on his pony, stuck a feather in his cap, and called it...

Have you got it?

Macaroni was a catch-all term in England for the scene-sters of the time who sat between the Restoration Era fop and the dandy on the historical timeline of trendy looks.

They were called macaronis because when they left England, usually on mommy and daddy's dime, they toured Europe and brought back this totally amazing new pasta they discovered in Italy.

It was, yeah, macaroni.

drawn wagons and carriages.

He painted furniture too, earned him a good living and a decent professional reputation.

But the wagon painter from Bedford, Ohio had a sense of humor, something he suppressed while trimming a carriage and expressed instead in humorous drawings.

Now those sideline sketches depicted children, mostly children, in funny everyday situations.

Every now and then Archie sold one of them.

But this is the rest of the story, July 4, 1875.

Archie went down to the parade ground in Wellington.

To watch the holiday festivities, yet despite the pomp and the ceremony and the shiny buttoned uniforms, it was a small group of unadorned yet enthusiastic participants that caught his eye.

They were not really part of the parade, yet their dancing and their prancing and their pretend to soldiering were so hilarious that Archie decided to sketch them.

He characterized them as proud, preening, fresh-faced army recruits eager for battle and yet still clad.

in civilian clothing.

Well, Archie took that sketch to a friend, a photographer named Jim Ryder, and asked how do you like it.

Jim responded any other way than the way he did.

We probably would not be talking about either of them today.

But what Archie's photographer friend said was, in essence, please friend, get serious.

There was nothing wrong with the funny drawings, he told Archie, but lurking behind the humor of those pompous paraders was a something powerful.

Take that same scene, Jim Ryder advised, and let the drama emerge.

Archie took his friend's advice.

The wagon fader got a couple of acquaintances and his own father, a Baptist minister, to pose for the three main characters in the revised portrait.

And when that one was completed, Archie's delighted photographer friend helped him make Chromolithograph copies, a few dozen at first, then a few hundred, and they sold for $10 a piece.

10,000 chromolithographs later Archie and Jim were rich men.

Archie repainted that portrait some 14 times with minor variations, but the three principal characters remained the same.

Their faces were modeled after a neighbor named Hugh Mosher and a boy named Harry Devereaux and the artist's preacher father, Samuel, who's determined to visit glares for all time.

from the center of one of the world's most famous paintings.

Archie, whose career as a serious portraitist began in his 40th year, was soon recognized exclusively as such, and yet for all of the dignified portraits he would subsequently paint.

None ever achieved the renown of that one that began as a gag.

The painting based on the sketch, originally entitled Fourth of July Musicians, for you see the three principal subjects of that drawing,

of the three jubilant celebrants prancing around Wellington Parade Ground.

One was playing a fife, and the other two were beating on drums, and you, of course, know what happened.

When artist Archie, Archibald Willard, transformed those men from parade ground clowns to revolutionary war soldiers, and retitled the work Spirit of 76, only now you know the rest of the story.

Celebrating his 50th year

on Motion

Picture.

God love him.

50

years.

Isn't that fine?

Jim, you know, I think that audiences of the country get a great kick out of learning something, and I know I would too.

When you make a picture like Run for Cover, and then you see the picture after you've made it, is there some one particular scene that you'd prefer

over others?

Oh, there's always one.

There

is.

There's always one that

you have a kind of a feeling for.

And we were just running it here to match the movement.

It's a scene where the boy...

The boy loses confidence in himself when, after he finds out that the leg is no longer going to be used to him.

And I try to re-establish his confidence by making him climb up the chair and fighting his way to his feet.

And he refuses, you know, that one.

Well, that was

the one.

And we're just showing it to match some movement.

Could I tell you?

Could I see it?

And would you

point out to me, as a singer, what a star would be?

Where he throws the chair and goes through the glass.

Say, Charlie, would you hit it, please?

Jim that's a tremendously powerful scene, but there

were great They were great.

I think that I think that Keaton and Garbo of my goodness cad me I won't talk about Bogart Because everybody does I loved him very much, but I think we can get along without talking about Bogart for about three years and his

his shade will be relieved.

But Cagney, in my view, was maybe the greatest actor who ever appeared in front of the camera.

Really?

Yes.

James Cagney?

Yes.

Why was that?

What makes you say that?

First of all, he broke every rule about movie acting.

You see, the first thing that every stage actor says is, I learned to act with a camera because you have to do less.

You can't do that in what you do at the National Theatre.

Cagney came on as though we were playing to an audience of 4,500 people.

He acted at the top of his bent, and he never hammed for one moment.

Thus proving my point that hamming is not overacting.

It is false acting.

It's fakery.

And there's not a fake minute in a Cagney movie.

Please have a season of it.

Yeah, study what?

Yes, what he was.

In fact, I was thinking the other day about the people I haven't interviewed who I'd love to, and I think he comes to me.

Kathryn Lake

He

won't come.

I know.

He won't come.

He won't complete recluse now, isn't he?

Well, nobody won't come in front of a camera.

No.

He goes out and does his thing, and he goes to Hollywood for six months.

Mystery Challenger, we go to a different form of questioning.

You ask one question at a time, in turn, moving clockwise, and we begin with Arlene Francis.

Would your name be on the entertainment pages of the newspaper?

I would say yes.

Mr. Sir?

Have you ever been or are you at present in a play that is running on Broadway?

No.

One down and nine to go, Miss Kilgall.

Was that a yes or a no, John?

That was a no.

Were you born somewhere other than the United States?

No.

Two down and eight to go, Mr. Vidal.

Are you most associated with television?

No.

Three down and seven to go, Ms.

Franson.

Well, are you most associated with motion pictures?

Yes.

Mr. Sir.

Is there a picture in which you appear currently running in one of the big, on or just off Broadway theaters?

No.

Forty-six to go, Miss Kilgill.

Uh, do you do anything besides perform and films?

I mean, do you do anything musical such as singing or playing an instrument?

Mmm, yes.

Miss

Middell?

Are you a leading man?

At present?

Of sorts.

Miss Francis?

Have you been in pictures for more than ten years?

Oh,

yes.

Mr. Syrup?

Are you married to a lady who was also in the public eye?

No.

Five down and five to go, Miss Kilgallon?

Uh, I'd like to get back to music.

Do you sing?

After a fashion?

Mr. Vidal?

Um, I pass.

Miss Francis?

Well, are you primarily known as a dramatic actor?

Mmm.

Yes.

Mr. Sir?

Are you very capable in physical achievements as well as acting?

Has been said.

It has been said.

Ms.

Kilgallen?

Are you currently... Excuse me, John, but could we backtrack?

Has it been established that he's not currently appearing in a play on Broadway?

Yes.

Oh.

No play,

no pictures.

No television.

It's out of work.

Okay.

Do dance.

Yes.

Mr. Vidow, did you ever win an Academy Award?

Yes.

Miss Fancy?

Yes.

Is a picture of yours about to open on Broadway?

No.

Wait a minute.

But he's dramatic.

Mr. Arlene, so that you're not misled, what do you mean by about?

Well, I mean within the next month as he has been making a picture that will open soon.

You know, one of those soon-to-be-released motion pictures.

Oh, you

are.

Well, I'm glad for you.

Mr. Sir?

Did you get your Academy Award for a picture that contains singing and dancing in it?

Yes.

Are you trying to stare?

No.

Six dotted, four to go, Mr. Vidal.

Are you Jean Kelly?

No.

Seven dotted, three to go, Miss Francis.

But he's not primarily a singer and dancer.

Singing and dancing and dramatic.

Isn't this agony?

Dorothy, has something come over you?

No, I was just agonizing for you, darling.

Oh.

Well, um...

Have you done pictures that are biographies of people?

Yes.

Yes?

Yes.

Singing and dancing biographies.

Awful.

Let's

get his height.

Was the pictures yeezy?

Was the pictures

yeezy?

No.

It's not a duty to go to skill down.

Are you over six feet tall?

Indeed, it was one more.

And of course, the picture is...

Paulsy.

Paulsy, and

I've actually seen some advertisements for it, Jim.

If I may say so, the likeness is astonishing when you're in uniform, you know?

Yes, it's quite remarkable, I know.

I'm

very lucky that way.

We could supply the eyebrows.

And we were being very honest with you because I said, Jim, isn't Paulsy's picture?

What is the name of it?

The

Gallant

Hours.

The Gallant Hours.

Isn't it going to open in New York soon?

He said, well, not for a month, so I'll give her a no.

So he gave you a break.

He gave you a break.

He did it with Bob Montgomery.

That's right.

He directed it.

Anyway, you're a marvelous performer, and we don't see nearly enough of you on the screen, and I'm delighted to have

you.

There was a time in the early 30s at Warner Brothers when Jimmy was making three prison pictures a year with time worth of good behavior, as a matter of fact.

And as the years rolled by, he broadened his roles and his talents.

Take 1955, for example.

That year, four Cagney pictures came out, each one starring a different Cagney.

In Run for Cover, a cocky sheriff.

In Mr. Roberts, a paranoid naval captain.

In Seven Little Fores, a song and dance man.

In Love Me or Leave Me, the unsympathetic lover.

And here's the lady Jimmy loved in that picture.

The lady all of us love all the time, Miss Doris Day.

Hi, Jim.

Coming here tonight to be with Jimmy is a sentimental journey for me, as I know it is for all of you.

And seeing you here tonight, Jimmy, surrounded by so many of your friends and all of us who love you so very dearly, I can't help but wish that we were starting out to do love me or leave me all over again.

Working with you was one of the happiest times of my life, really.

And anyone who has ever worked with you knows that you're more than just an actor.

I mean, you don't play a character, you live the character.

You breathe life into your own performance and make the rest of us really look good.

That's because you're there.

And tonight, you make the whole world feel good.

Just because you're here.

bittersweet.

You know how to push your arms around an old man?

In a rare interview at AJD, Cagney looked back over half a century in showbiz.

Well, the job was always a job.

Number one, it was a job with playing a tough guy.

I hate him.

But you were really tough.

Well, I was.

You had to think of the where I was born and raised.

On the lower east side of New York, you don't grow any daisies there.

Maybe you found someone you liked better.

There was the grapefruit in May Clark's face, still vaguely shocking.

And there was Cagney's favorite tough guy, Mad Dog Cody Jarrett.

He was really a nasty guy.

You really kind of like nasty guys.

That means you to play.

I had a fellow in the back of a car.

Oh, he was the informer.

How you doing, Parker?

Stop being here.

I need some air.

Oh.

Stop it, huh?

I'll give it a layer.

Good scene.

It was a good scene, yes, sure.

People did that.

And that's the way they'll remember Cagney.

I don't know.

Come on, Munson, no pictures.

Can you remember the words?

Come on.

Give me the first few lines of the National Anthem.

Give me that dick.

Come on.

I'll turn it on as soon as you give me the first few lines of the National Anthem.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's

early light what so proudly we hailed of D.I.

Singh.

Wrong.

And that's wrong.

It is two of D.I.

Singh's from my country, Disney.

That's wrong.

Are you talking about the next line of star-spangled banners at the twilight's last gleaming?

At the twilight's last gleaming comes out of D.I.

Singh.

Crazy.

You just prove to my boy nobody can remember the words because they're rotten words.

Listen.

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave?

What kind of a word is yet?

There

was a lawyer once, his name was Francis Scott Key.

He penned a song that I'm sure you're aware of.

You've seen it.

It's in most hymnals throughout our churches.

It's called the National Anthem.

It is our song as an American.

We go, however, to a ball game.

We stand in our church services and we sing the words of that song and they float over our minds and our lives and we don't even realize what we're singing.

Most of us have memorized it as a child, but we've never really thought about what it means.

Let me tell you a story.

Francis Scott Key was a lawyer in Baltimore.

The colonies were engaged in vicious conflict with the mother country, Britain.

Because of this conflict and the protractedness of it, they had accumulated prisoners on both sides.

The American colonies had prisoners and the British had prisoners.

And the American government initiated a move.

They went to the British and they said, let us negotiate for the release of these prisoners.

They said, we want to send a man out to discuss this with you.

They were holding the American prisoners in boats.

about a thousand yards offshore and they said we want to send a man by the name of Francis Scott Key he will come out and negotiate to see if we can make a mutual exchange on the appointed day in a row boat he went out to this boat and he negotiated with the British officials and they reached a conclusion that men could be exchanged on a one-for-one basis Francis Scott Key jubilant with the fact that he'd been successful went down below in the boats and what he found was a cargo hold full of humanity men

And he said, men, I've got news for you tonight, you're free.

He said, tonight I have negotiated successfully your return to the colonies.

He said, you'll be taken out of this boat, out of this spilt, out of your chains.

As he went back up on board to arrange for their passage to the shore, the admiral came and he said, we have a slight problem.

He said, we will still honor our commitment to release these men, but it'll be merely academic after tonight.

It won't matter.

And Francis Scott Key said, what do you mean?

He said, well, Mr. Key, he said tonight we have laid an ultimatum upon the colonies.

Your people will either capitulate and lay down the colors of that flag that you think so much of, or you see that fort right over there, Fort Henry?

He said, we're going to remove it from the face of the earth.

Now imagine, if you will, that the year is 1814.

I'm a disc jockey on Radio Station KXEL in Boston, Massachusetts.

One day about a half hour before I went on the air, I got kind of an interesting phone call.

Ring.

Hello, Radio Station KXEL.

Ring.

I picked up the phone.

Oh.

Radio Station KXEL, Boston.

Happy Dad speaking.

Hello.

Hello.

Oh, hi there.

Yes, what can I do for you, sir?

I listen to your program a lot.

Well, that's nice, but I'm about ready to go on the air.

What is it you wanted, fella?

Well, I've written a song,

and I thought if I could... Yeah, I see.

And you think that everybody that phones me or comes in the studio, I can play their record?

Look, this is a very competitive business, kid.

What's your name?

Francis Scott Key.

Never heard of you.

Is this your first song?

Well, not actually, you see...

Well, never mind.

What's the name of it?

Star Spangled Banner.

It's not a very catchy title.

Hello?

Yeah, hello's a good title, but Star Spangled Banner isn't very catchy.

Oh, I thought it was kind of nice when I wrote it.

Well, what kind of song is it?

It's an anthem.

Oh, what?

I say it's an anthem.

An anthem?

It's kind of a stirring thing, you see, people

hear it.

Look, look, kid, I don't want to bring you down, but look at the surveys and downbeat.

Teenagers, don't dig anthems.

You tell me one jukebox in this town that's got an anthem on it, and I'll eat it.

You what?

Uh, I say show me a jukebox in town.

It's got an anthem on it.

Oh, well, uh, actually, I didn't have it in mind, uh, for jukeboxes.

Well, just where do you think they're gonna play this thing?

I thought it'd be nice to play before baseball games.

Before baseball games?

Baseball, you know, the umpire and the

pitcher

and

the... Yeah, I know what a baseball game is, but what do you want to play this song before baseball games?

Well, uh, if the...

Everything works like I think it should.

Everything will stand up.

Well,

it's an anthem, you

see.

Oh, come on.

What are you, some new kind of nut?

Anthem, A-N-T-E-M.

I know anthem, anthem.

All right, look.

If you don't

like the idea, I can call somebody

else.

No, no, wait a minute, wait a minute.

What's the sheet music sound like?

There it is

there.

You're bugging me.

Kid, I don't have much time for going there.

I mean, what do the lyrics sound

like?

Listen to these lyrics.

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming.

Why was that last word?

Gleaming.

It doesn't even rhyme.

Hello?

Oh, come on, Francis.

It's got a rhyme.

You know, moon, june.

Can't you work on those lyrics a little bit?

I've been 15.

Here's writing this

one.

Change it a little bit.

Give it a catchy twist and call me back.

Oh, wait a minute.

I got an idea.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light, that crazy old banner was waving up a price.

There you go.

Now you got the idea.

I

don't like it.

What don't you like?

People aren't going to stand up at baseball games.

Oh, well, what do you want people standing up at baseball games for?

If you got a catchy tune, they'll buy the record.

Oh.

I don't know much about the business, you see.

Don't worry, you may be right.

I was wrong once before.

I said I was wrong once before.

Oh, glad to hear it.

No, no.

Some guy brought me Battle Hymn of the Republic, and I said I wouldn't make it.

Oh,

fine.

Yeah, well, it made it.

Never mind.

Well, worry about your lyrics a little bit later.

Tell me about this.

Where did you write this song?

I wrote the song down in Maryland.

Oh, you got a studio in Maryland?

No, I was on the boat.

Is it your own boat?

No, no, I wasn't mine.

I don't have any part of it.

See, I was being held prisoner on this American warship, and it was captured by the British.

Now, the British were shellin' Baltimore, and the bombs were bursting in air in a rocket's red

glare.

Hold it, kid, hold it.

Wait a minute, let me get this picture straight.

Francis, got me.

Francis, Francis.

You say you're a prisoner on this ship when you wrote the song, and there's a big war going on, the rockets are flying, the bombs are bursting, and the city's being bombed, right?

You sit down and write a song.

It's called

the Star-Spangled Banner.

Well, you must be some kind of a coop.

Huh?

Listen, could you get it to... If I could get it to President Jackson.

President Jackson?

Yeah.

Well, what does President Jackson want with the song?

He might make it a national

anthem.

Oh, come on.

Would you stop with this anthem?

But you're bugging me, kid.

Look, Jackson's a president of the United States.

He's not a song plugger.

He knows a lot of people.

Yeah, but not in the music business, though, Francis.

Here's what I think we'd better do.

If you're willing to give me the song, I can get it to a little combo down in Concord.

Maybe you heard of them.

They'll make a record of it.

They call themselves the Rebel Rosers.

Who does?

This group down at Concord, we might get them to cut a record of this song of yours.

Oh, how about that?

Do they

play at baseball games?

No, they don't play at baseball games.

Now look, this is a real red-hot combo.

There's three guys and a Cherokee Indian on bongos.

You must have heard of them.

Cherokee Indian.

Yeah, look, Francis, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I think we're going to have to do something with that title.

What's that?

A

Cherokee Indian?

No, no, no.

The Star Spangled Banner isn't up to the current market.

You've got to change it around a little bit.

Like, how about this?

I was a teenage Star Spangled Banner.

I don't think so.

What's the matter with that title?

Here's one.

This is better.

It tells a story.

The Star Spangled Banner was waving the night for you.

I got a craven.

Percy Faith, 1959, the original recording session.

Summer Place.

Have you been bad, Johnny?

Have you been bad with girls?

That is not the theme song for the movie.

That is a theme from a summer

place.

Max Steiner wrote that.

People seem to think Percy Faith wrote it.

No, Max.

Max was... broke.

As the agent called him, you better do this job.

You're out of money.

Cuban cigars.

Well, you know.

But the actual theme, which was in the beginning of the picture,

Wasn't written for a summer place at all.

He pulled it out of a file cabinet.

It was originally written for Twilight of the Gods.

Two years earlier.

And it was rejected.

No matter your marital status, there are perhaps lessons to be learned by watching fictional people struggle through the minefields of modern romance.

Up first, a steamy, melodramatic tale of two adults, each married to someone else who rekindled a romance from their youth, while at the same time, their two teenage kids begin a romance of their own.

From 1959, it's a summer place.

Richard Egan and Dorothy McGuire stars the adults who rediscover their passion for each other while

rising stars Troy Donahue and Sandra Dee are the young lovers.

The saga is given a lush and lavish Technicolor treatment by director Delmer Dave's who until this film had success directing tough guys in westerns film noir and war movies.

Even though a summer place was a departure for Dave's he made it a hit and following the box office success of a summer place Warner Brothers continued to give Dave's more melodramas to direct.

Summer place was not a hit with critics but they weren't the film's target audience anyway they

hardly ever are.

The target audience, women and teens, came to see the film in droves and it remains an appealing picture.

Some are touched by the emotional rawness of the characters, caught up in a passion they can't control, while others see it as a guilty pleasure of unintentional over-the-top performances.

Either way though, it's effective entertainment.

From Warner Brothers in 1959, also starring Arthur Kennedy and Constance Ford with a memorable score by composer Max Steiner.

Here's a summer place.

Well, your daughter didn't waste any time.

She's let their boy kiss and maul her her very first night here.

Where were they?

Down below me in the garden.

If they had anything to hide, do you think they'd do it right under your window?

Are you defending her cheap behavior?

Cheap?

A girl kissing a boy in the moonlight?

You know Molly's as decent as this boy seems to be.

No decent girl, that's a boy, kiss and maul in the very first night they meet.

I suppose it's your Swedish blood in her.

I've read about how the Swedes bathe together and have trial marriages and free love.

I've read all about that.

Anything goes.

You hate the Swedes.

How many of them?

There's a someplace Where it may rain or storm Yet I'm safe and warm for them That's a place Your arms reach out to me

the sun

I'm thankful not seeing you.

It's that way with me too, Johnny.

You know, if I only had something, something to bank on, I'd feel lost.

My father and your mother are getting married.

Yeah, I know.

They sure deserve each other.

You know, Johnny, when I think about it, I actually get sick.

I mean, actually sick to my stomach.

Are you going back to Buffalo for Christmas?

Yes.

All right, listen.

You know, Dad would never know if I took a day more to get to Pine Island and route home.

Could I come up to Buffalo and meet you?

No, Johnny.

Mama'd never let me see you.

She hates you.

She'd call the police or worse.

Yes, there's this big Episcopal church near the station.

It has a big, gold cross in front.

And it's even dark inside, so no one would see us.

Here's Sandra Dee.

That was her house.

And nothing from that first day I saw her, and no one that has happened to me since, has ever been as frightening and as confusing.

For no person I've ever known has ever done more to make me feel more sure, more insecure, more important, and less significant.

In everyone's life...

There's a summer of 42.

Victor Young wrote that.

Strangely, never got an Oscar until it was

posthumous.

Johnny Mathis, here are the Oscars, 1972.

Oh, to musicians.

Now, the remarkable part of their contribution is that it's as subtle as a violin and as commanding as a trumpet.

The nominees for the best original dramatic score are John Berry for Mary, Queen of Scots.

Richard Rodney Bennett for Nicholas and Alexandra.

Isaac Hayes for Shaft.

Jerry Fielding for Straw Dogs

Michelle LeGrand for Summer of 42

I just want to say a few words.

I'm very proud first.

I'm very happy.

I want to thank the producer of the picture who is there tonight, Richard Ross.

I want to thank also the marvelous director, Bob Merlegan.

And also I want to thank many people that we don't thank very often or not enough often to me, which are all the musicians, all the marvelous musicians that you have in California.

Thanks, all of you.

This is the closing scene from Summer 42.

Music by Michelle LeGrand.

I have to announce that we're going to be off on a couple of civic media stations shortly for a ballgame coverage, but we're still on wrjn.com and the rest of our civic media stations.

You can still hear us at WRJN.com all the way till high noon.

This is the music of the stars.

This is the ending.

Dear Hermione, I must go home now.

I'm sure you'll understand.

There's much I have to do.

I won't try and explain what happened last night.

Because I know that in time,

you'll

find a proper way in which to remember it.

What I will do is remember you.

And I pray that you be spared all senseless tragedies.

I wish you good things, Hermione.

Only good things.

Always, Dorothy.

I was never to see her again.

Nor was I ever to learn what became of her.

We were different.

Kids were different.

It took us longer to understand the things we felt.

Life is made up of small comings and goings.

And for everything we take with us, there is something that we leave behind.

In the summer of 42,

We raided the Coast Guard station four times.

We saw five movies and had nine days of rain.

Benji broke his watch, Asuka gave up the harmonica.

And in a very special way, I lost her me forever.

If I had to choose Just one day To last my whole life through It would surely be That Sunday The day

that I

coming in but fast lots of daffodils were showing off their skills nodding all together I could almost hear them whisper go on and kiss her go on and kiss her if I had to choose

to live within my heart it would be that tender

That Sunday That summer

If I had to choose just

day

The way we danced and hummed our favorite song.

The things we did last summer.

I'll remember all winter long.

The midway and the fun.

Cupid dolls we won the Bella

The rented tandem bike The lunches that we used to pass We never could explain That sudden summer rain The looks we got when we

began to fade like promises we made how could a love that seems so right go wrong the things we did

Frank Sinatra, mid-forties.

We're going to be cut off for a ball game in some stations here on the Civic Media Network, continuing on in several others.

But we're on the air all through the world at wrjn.com from our flagship station at Radio

Park.

Back with you in the undead show Bill Byman Arch, Brewers and Pirates wrapping up this three game series here this afternoon at PNC Park.

It's been Josh this week.

We came up with 96 and Mark's the first half of the season.

We've been past the half of it for a while, but the unofficial halfway point of the season with the All-Star break upon us.

This has been a historical first half for the crew.

And yet I think the manager will tell you he thinks the best baseball is still in front of us.

He

did just tell us that.

media session he had this morning with the writers said the best way I would describe this team has been inconsistent and that doesn't seem to fit a team that has the second best record in major league baseball right but you're I think you're right Lane in reading and he feels like there's more in the tank for this glorious club which if that's the case if they've got another year that they can find once we come out of the all-star break then good luck to everybody that they're gonna be playing absolutely yesterday was a frustrating day because both games

were right there and we're so used to

but they were on the wrong

end of the problem.

Yeah,

one run

game where they had a big lead in game one and they lose it on a grand slam.

And one run game where they just couldn't get that big hit.

They were one for eight with runners in scoring position at the nightcap yesterday.

We had a

lot of games like that in the first half.

I think that's one of the things that Murph would say we could improve upon is limiting those games where we lose a lot of chances to score runs.

I think

the

first game you just chalk it up to, there was a young 22-year-old rookie that had

have their work cut out for them today.

They're going to face Paul Skeens, who maybe hasn't put up the numbers he put up the last two years in the league, but he's still one of the best visitors in the National League.

I don't think anybody would argue anything different, but they did a great job against Braxton Ashcraft yesterday, who's actually had the better year than Skeens to this point.

So hopefully the Brewers who've had

some success at

Skeens in the past can put together a good performance here.

look at but we are at the point where we're going to go into the all-star break at the end of today when you look back at this first half a lot of winning a lot of success you're doing some stuff that Brewers teams haven't done in the past but I know you and I know that you feel like even though those are great things there's a lot more out there for this team

Yeah, I mean first and foremost, I'm proud of this team.

I am.

I love the team.

I trust the team.

But I think we've been very consistent in our play.

We have won a lot of games, but we've got a lot left.

And I know the expectation coming in from the outside world, you know, is that we're going to be, you know, about, you know, 85 win team or 500 team.

Like usual, we're not going to...

when the division, whatever.

But our own expectations are much higher than that.

My expectations are to play well and it would be a really good solid baseball team.

And I think we've shown signs, but not consistent.

And hopefully... Norman

What a picture question I guess to you would be dealt with so many entries on the kitchen front.

And other teams have dealt with those types of injuries

But it never feels like this

And here's Gary.

I'm not sure what that meant.

But

it's important, has that been it.

This team has that march forward

mentality.

Yeah, they do, they do.

And that is a thing.

And the next model, you know, it's like guys are stepping up today.

It's Miz's start.

We feel, you know, certain that Miz needs a little extra time.

And this would be a good

time

So step up.

That is the way we have to look at it.

Because you're going to have injuries.

We've been devastated by them.

And that's something that we're going to have to live.

We might not make an excuse there.

We can't win because of

it.

Fred McMurray.

Next

up, believe it or not, Joan

Crawford.

And the 2-2 pitch.

Now the

right field

line, that is

a

foul

ball.

A couple of feet.

If it's fair, it's extra

bases for Reynolds.

But it is foul ball.

And the battle continues.

Gasser got

the first out of the bottom of the first out of one pitch.

Can't make

him find out to left.

Laoh had a lengthy advantage of striking out.

Now Reynolds putting together a little lengthier AP as well.

This will be the 15th pitch of the inning for Gasser.

2-2.

And

a swing and

a messy struck him out to the sweeper.

A very impressive 1-2-3 first for Robert Gasser.

As we go to the second inning, no score on the Brewers Radio Network presented by American Family

Insurance.

Oliver

Mitchell here.

Hours, of course, the Kegelpitter.

It's brought to you by Lowell Family.

Lowell One.

Hours, took up the light.

Two goals in one strike.

And there's one away, Jake.

You wouldn't be able to do these awful things to me if I were still in this chair.

Paul Park held it.

There's one away for Gary Sanchez.

But

you're awesome.

You are in that

chair.

Couple of walks in yesterday's.

One more from Jones

Crawford.

This one in the air too.

right center field

tracking.

He's there to make the catch.

And there's

two down medium depth on that

fly ball off the bat of Gary Sanchez.

A

splitter that stayed up.

Gary would love to see that pitch again.

That's a pitch

that Gary typically will do some

damage with.

Just

missed

that

one.

And

two quick outs for Skeens here in the top

of the second inning.

He has recorded five outs on 15 pitches to

open

up.

This contest, the pitch to Mitchell's in there for a strike in its own order.

Garrett Ofer three with a walk and a couple of strikeouts against Skeens at his career.

Having a breakout

season, 274 average, eight ball runs, 43

driven in.

The 0-1.

And Mitchell at ground ball to second base.

It'll skip

out to Lowe who feels it and sidearms it over to first.

Can the Brewers down in order?

Just 17 pitches to get to the

first two minutes

for Polsky.

We go to the bottom of two.

No score on the Brewer's radio network presented by American Family Insurance.

Joan Crawford records.

The sound of baseball.

Stay wide.

We've got Walter Houston.

Now this is really good.

Walter Houston did the September song.

Mr. Liberace did a great job on

that.

Signing off his

syndicated TV show.

In the 1950s, early

60s, black and white

on film.

And one

who had a TV

station, goodbye.

And it was done very well.

But he did September's song as a fadeout.

I think the best version was out of Walter Houston.

Walter Houston, John Houston's daddy.

Here he is.

is a hard hit ground ball and eats up.

The third baseman Schumacher trickles into left field and Valdes not stopping at first.

He's on

his way

to second.

And the

day goes on.

Soon

a weekend of Esmeralda.

Valdes continues.

He had four hits yesterday, including three home runs and eight RBI's.

And he's got a double in the top, the second in here off of Gasser now.

That was a hard hit ball.

She'll make me tell you he should have made the play.

I think you got that as a double all the way, but

a play that

she

made probably

has made before in his career a

hard back hit pick.

Push pitch to

Ryan O'Hern is in there for a strike at its own one.

But you definitely have to rule that a double.

I would think as quickly as that got on the third baseman over there at the high

corner.

Caster

looks at second in the 0-1 pitch is chopped foul right at the plate.

And it's 0-2 on O'Hearn

who went over six yesterday in the double header.

283

average 16 hole runs 61

driven in again we told him yesterday that's a good Pirates offense even without O'Neill Cruz and Connor Griffin they are currently without.

They have little to offer but the song

to

pitch

is a fly ball to right hit well in his back in his at the track is off the very top of the wall.

His first hit of a series and the Pirates have taken a 1-0

lead.

So Pittsburgh jumps out front early.

Here on the bottom of the second inning, that ball is really well hit.

That's out of a lot of ball parts,

but

that elevated

wall

in right, kept it in play.

And now

here's Nick Gonzalez.

Hey,

before the first pitch, or after the final out, if you're right, we'll start clean at Tsunami Express.

Tsunami Express Car Wash,

the official car wash of Milwaukee Rooms.

So right-handed

hitting, Nick Gonzalez

is up

there.

First pitch to him is a liner right to Schubank, who makes the catch a third.

For the first out, no chance to double off O'Hern at second base.

He was scrambling back to the bag.

And there's one away for Marcelo Zouna.

Zouna 0 for three yesterday, just two on one.

has exceeded, and it's really changed the length of this Pirates lineup as a result of it.

It's 1-0 pitch.

You know, Zuda, a little flare

into

mid-center field.

That's down for Mason.

Around 30 of Ernie's got a score.

It's 2-0 Pirates on the RBI single for Marcelo.

Zuda, who drives it, is 27th of the

season.

And I walk a little bit.

So the back-to-back doubles have both come around and scored.

How's the fastball down below the zone?

And the days turn to go, as they grow fewer.

September,

November, go for the infield and down in front of the outfielders.

So still just one out, now here's Jared Triolo.

Orson Well.

1984.

a hard hit ball out to center, but Mitchell tracking it into the gap in right center to make the catch for the second out.

And there's two down now for Henry Davis.

When you're packing your bags for

the

trip, you'll be back when you're packing your bags.

So

two in, but two

down now here in the bottom of the second.

Henry Davis,

157 average, seven home runs, he's driven in

24.

Gasser brings home the first pitch, it is munted foul at the third base, line bearing defensive munt by Henry Davis.

Henry Davis trying to test Shoemake over there at third base, the newest rule.

What it is to be young.

You don't know what it is.

So nothing at one here on Davis, one for two yesterday.

Someday

rules will have some work to do against Paul.

He's really to nothing here in the

same thing.

Yes sir.

So what.

Is a fly ball.

Very well.

Chariot back.

The track he jumped up.

Jackson.

To run home run for Henry Davis his eighth of the season.

Churio got back there gave it a great effort just beyond his reach to make the catch.

It was a cutter in the zone low inside corner.

And the pirates have struck for four here and now Jackson stretching out a little bit out in the field.

I think he's OK.

But he went into that wall pretty hard as he got back there to try and make the catch.

Let's make music together.

Chris Hook is out to chat with Gasser.

I'm not sure he gave himself a shot again.

He just didn't make the catch.

He got airborne above that wall.

And he had a chance to bring that one back.

It

would

appear.

But a pretty good collision with the wall as he went up at the same time to try and make that catch.

So the Pottawatomie Sportsbook trip to the mound, it's over.

As Chris went on his way back, he hit the dugout.

All the wall screens, the lead dining at over 95 kiosks.

It's a fan string.

Pottawatomie Sportsbook become a legend.

So back to the top of the order now, Jake Magle.

The first inning, Gasser had a one, two, three first with the second inning.

Has not been so kind.

The pitch is a strike on the outside.

It kept fast ball and so it won.

The Pirates have been pretty aggressive.

They're up there swimming.

Davis is home run on the second pitch.

Triolo's line out on the second pitch.

The left.

Checked on a pitch down and away.

With a change up, that's what Mother 1 struck.

Singled on the second bench, Gonzalez lined out on the first

pitch, and they're up there

swinging.

He gets gassered

here.

Here's the 1-1.

This is a fly

ball.

Right center field.

Freelike racing in and falling off to rank makes the catch.

And the inning is over.

On the

pirate strike for four, they do it on four hits.

Three of which were extra base hits.

And they strand nobody.

We go to the third or fourth nothing Pittsburgh on the Brewer's radio network presented by American family

It is for nothing Pittsburgh as we head to the third inning hand with the play by play.

Here's Josh Menor.

Thank you very much, Lane.

And Paul Skeens has retired the first six batters that he's faced in short order.

Sal Freelick will lead things off then Joey Ortiz and the newcomer Brayden Schumann.

Sal takes outside corner called strike one.

Only 17 pitches

for the first

two minutes.

For the All-Star who is not participating in the game on Tuesday, Paul Skeens.

Freelike in a homerun yesterday, batting 2-40 with his first homerun since he... He lines one foul

and outplayed on the left field line.

He's in an

0-2 hole against Skeens.

Four homers in total,

In the 0-2 pitch, he is hit to left, but slicing foul again and out of play.

So a four spot against Gasser in that bottom of the second inning as the Pirates try for the sweep.

Resenting this 18 game in 17 day stretch from the wind up the O2 high and it's one ball and two strikes on sell.

It's going to be a winning stretch.

And what is about as grueling of a. Three and a half two and a half weeks beg your pardon that you can have.

during a Major League Baseball season.

Seventeen days.

One two pitch is poked foul by Freelick.

Spoils one left field side.

Brewers coming into the day in this stretch.

Ten and seven.

So if they lose even with that there'll be ten and eight.

It's two and a half weeks and at worst they're going to have a five game lead in the division going into the All-Star break.

The one two again.

It foul again.

This one pulled on the ground up the first baseline.

One two again, flight into right.

Easy for Ace Merlin Valdez.

Backs up maybe one step.

And well in front of the track makes the catch.

Brewers are hitting the ball.

They have only struck out once but first seven batters have been retired by Skeens and now Joey Ortiz coming to the plate.

Here are the details if you forgot it on that first start of the year that Skeens made against the Brewers back in April at American Family Field.

He had a perfect game through the first 20 batters.

Pitch to Joey is popped into the seats on the first base side.

Jake Bowers broke it up in the seventh with two outs.

He got that first and only Brewers base runner.

Then the Pirates who had a big lead in that game took him out.

So the Brewers have one base runner this year against Skeens.

The 0-1 taking that the letters 97 first strike.

Joey Ortiz batting 2-25 and that's been on a big upswing.

One of the more frustrating moments in the doubleheader yesterday was when his would be Homer hit the top of the wall.

And now he pops one up foul third base side drifting over towards the seats is Gonzalez.

But that ball is going to be just past the Pirate Stugout and that's 0-2 still on Joey.

He hit a ball about as far as you can here at this ballpark.

Without it being a Homer it hit.

That area where the wall juts out in front of the bullpens, it hit off the top of the padding and did not go over.

He's really had a great week offensively.

One out of the 02 again.

Checked up on a sweeper down low.

Skeens beat the Braves on Tuesday in his last start, which was noteworthy.

One two pitch.

taken down the middle for a called third strike.

97 mile an hour heater and Joey is the second strikeout for Skeens.

Two out here in the third and the newcomer Brandon Chumake coming to the plates.

The Pirates had lost each of Skeens previous nine starts.

Before Tuesday, it's almost incomprehensible that that's possible.

He's been more human.

Braden Shoemaker takes a strike.

We just found out that the Brewers acquired him about an hour and a half before the game started today.

He had been injured with the Astros for most of the last month and a half.

We saw him play in the series against the Brewers in Houston.

He swings and misses.

Does Braden Shoemaker left handed hitter and it's 0 and 2.

Shoemaker acquired by the Astros in April had been playing in triple A with the Yankees and with Houston 30 games hit two fifty six.

Skeens 0-2 is high ball 1 2 out nobody on in a 4-0 Pirates lead in the visiting third Chewmake 28 years old.

He's a former first round big Can play all over the infield and the Brewers like that versatility of course especially with Hamilton on the injured list 1-2 he gets peace of a fastball and fouls it out of play and stays alive

He actually got injured in a game against the Brewers.

Back in late May when they were in Houston got hurt landed on the ILM was out for over a month.

One two pitch swing and a miss got him with a slider and that's back to back strikeout schemes perfect.

First time through the order.

We go to the bottom of the third.

Robert Gasser will try to bounce back after the top bottom of the second.

He gave up four hits three for extra bases and Henry Davis hit the home run that changed this game into two nothing game for nothing.

So it is the meat of the order Brandon Lau coming up to start the bottom of the third first pitch swing and a miss.

Lau took a call third strike back in the first inning.

And Henry Davis home run.

is eighth of the year.

Just the second of his career against the Brewers just over that left field wall.

The pitch to allow is outside lefty versus lefty.

If you're wondering,

Why didn't Jacob Mizorowski start today as had been listed for most of the week?

Brewers explained it after the double header yesterday.

2-1 pitch, swaying in a miss at a sweeper.

It's 2-2.

Miz is dealing with a bit of fatigue.

That's how they described it.

They didn't say injury and they were careful to not do so.

The way that it was explained by Pat Murphy is that Mizorowski just didn't bounce back.

fully the way that they would have hoped to have him start today after that long start in St.

Louis.

And the two two is swung on and missed.

He struck him out.

Sweeper down and away there and Lau has fan twice against Robert Gasser.

One out for nothing pirates bottom third and Brian Reynolds coming to the plate.

He struck out also back in the first.

Gasser's first pitch is swung through on a change up.

So Ms is given extra time and I think that.

Truthfully, you could say he deserves about a two week break.

He has been such a horse.

As valuable as it gets for a pitcher for any team this year, I think.

pitch high this time on Reynolds one and one.

And so his last start was Tuesday in St.

Louis.

Sounds like he may not start until that second series out of the All-Star break when we get there.

That would be the Mets.

So that could be two weeks.

One-one pitch is lined in a right opposite way and a base hit for Brian Reynolds.

Over to pick it up is Sal Freelick and he'll throw it in to hold Reynolds at first with a one-out single.

His third hit of this series that the Pirates are trying to complete a sweep in.

And here comes their ace, ace Marilyn Valdez, the 22 year old rookie who doubled to start the four run rally last inning.

He drove in eight of the 10 runs that the Pirates scored in the twin bill yesterday on his own bat.

Pitch by Gasser is up and in ball one.

So.

You got Mizorowski getting some extended rest.

Of course, Kyle Harrison yesterday got placed onto the injured list.

He'll get at least a couple of weeks.

Those have been the two top starting pitchers for the Brewers this season, as you know, and it's a good time to give them some time.

Flyball is poked into.
