I got a question for you and for producer Parker Olsen down in Madison Studio A2.
A question for today is, do the bears still suck?
Yes, Parker.
Okay.
Yes, we do have affirmation.
We might even have musical affirmation at some point during the program.
Oh, because without a doubt, they tell you how how we do a little touch tunes sabotage with with bear fans.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
And and we've got a friend who would love to take us touch tunes, you know, with his little cell phone and whatever bar we were at, he
He'd bring up the Bear Down Chicago Bear song until he realized that somebody, maybe me, would quickly follow it up with the bear still suck playing on the jukebox.
And that that didn't really resolve anything.
It just made the jukebox company, you know, a little bit richer for playing those two songs.
But the fact of the matter is the good guys won
this time
around.
And that was how long has it been since we've been able to say, no, that was a good.
fun game to watch all the way through where you had to watch till the end.
The outcome was not certain.
How many games this season, we said, oh, that was boring to watch, or it was painful to watch.
Yes.
Yeah.
Because even the wins were just like, there was nothing flashy about it.
This one great plays up and down the field throughout the game.
I thought it was great.

So.
Well, that's because you look at Jordan loves touchdowns.
And by the way, if you you missed the final scores, 28, 21.
And we asked Rogers playing 3D chess here when I said, do the bears still suck?
He puts on Facebook.

Very nice.
And also a bear's band.
Yeah.
Yes, exactly.
Anyway, but so Jordan Love, he went 17 of 25, 234 yards, three touchdowns.
Christian Watson's touchdowns were from 23 yards and 41 yards.
And then there was Bo Melton.
Who?
Beau Melton with a 45 yard touchdown.
So the point I'm trying to make here is you didn't have so much of that dink and doink stuff of, you know, just little screens here, little screens here that make me want to rip my hair out.
They actually went for it in this game.
So the play calling was
much better.
Yes.
And Keyshawn Nixon could not pick a better time to get his first interception of the season.
Oh my God.
And that's what we we haven't had a game like that where you just erupt at the end of the game And people are going there is your dagger and so forth He picked off Caleb Williams his pass in the end zone 22 seconds left to preserve the Packers win over the Bears and the Packers now move into first place in the NFC north Huzzah,
good.
Yes, Josh Jacobs had the tie breaking touchdown a two yard run with three and a half minutes left in the game.
He'd set it up with a spectacular 21 yard run.
But yes, then came the concern of, you know, how the Bears would manage the clock and if they tied it would we have time to, you know, at least try to win it with a field goal or something like that.
And would the defense hold?
Because the defense, frankly, that last Bears Drive was a longer one.
And they were saying on TV, you know, they'd worry about the Green Bay defense getting tired.
They were motivated, man.
I tell you, I'm like a Parsons.
Look, I
think
I've mailed out all my Christmas cards.
I really got to save one for Jerry Jones.
I got to send Jerry Jones a Christmas card somewhere.
You idiot.

Yeah, I
Oh my gosh, between that and the two other replays that were called back on us, you know, in the olden days, you know,
those were two different plays where the Packers would have benefited, but there's time for challenge flags and things.
And,
know, sometimes you win those.
But yeah, yesterday was a little frustrating from a referee standpoint.
I will say though, I mean, it helped make a friend of ours a lot of money.
Oh, yeah, because we we do the we do the quarter game with flags.
Okay.
And
for folks who don't know, everybody puts their name on a piece of paper or a ticket or whatever.
And then every time there's a flag, everybody yells flag and somebody walks around with a with a beer pitcher and everybody puts a quarter in there.
And then at the end, you pull a name and somebody wins a lot of quarters.
And so that first, that first quarter, no pun intended.
Holy cow.
We're like, somebody's going to be rich and somebody was.
And it was, it was not me, but it was still, it was still fun to see somebody else get all of that.
Let's see, Jordan Lavey mentioned he had the three touchdowns here.
The Packers are now nine, three, and one, which puts them ahead of the Bears at nine and four.
The Packers won their fourth straight.
They snapped the Bears five game winning streak.
Plus, in this stretch of three straight divisional games, the Packers trounced Minnesota.
They won in Detroit on Thanksgiving, and now have gone four and oh against the division.
After going one and five in the division last season,
Now they will play the Bears again in less than two weeks.
It'll be a Saturday night game December 20th in prime time But first there is a trip to Denver next Sunday afternoon another 325 kickoff So one o'clock is when the coverage will get started the pregame coverage across the Civic Media Network next Sunday again 1 p.m.
Ahead of the Packers visiting the Broncos
Well, we've got the time here to look at some other sports.
The Bucks lost last Saturday to Detroit.
They're off now until Thursday when they hosted the Boston Celtics.
The Badger men's basketball team, no problem trouncing Marquette.
I didn't look deep into it, but there can't be a lot of times where the Badger men's basketball team beats Marquette by 20 points
I might be wrong about that.
Could totally be the case.
They will, the Badger men play next Wednesday night at Nebraska.
And that means that, let's see, hang on just a
there.
Um, I lost my, I lost my spot here.
Here we go.
Men's basketball in Nebraska courage begins at seven 30 on several civic media stations.
Uh, the Badger men's hockey team swept Notre Dame.
So they are first in the big
They are often you're laughing at something else about Notre Dame.
Yes, I am.
We'll come back to that.
Okay.
The Badger men's hockey team is now off until December 28th 29th.
The Badger women's hockey team number one in the country and they swept number two Ohio State over the weekend and now they are off until January 9th.
And then finally the Badger women's volleyball team moving on in the NCAA tournament.
They swept in the first two rounds.
The three seed now advances to the regional semis in Austin, Texas.
They will play number two seed Stanford.
And that will be on Friday afternoon.
So that's the sports that matters around here.
But the sports that people are talking about is the college football playoffs, which is this the first year they expanded to the 12 team
So a 12 team bracket again, once upon a time, no championship.
It's whatever sports reporter said it was going to be.
And then it was a two thing.
And then it was a four team thing.
And now it's 12.
And I'm sure it'll be 16 real soon because, you know, money.
But you still have to pick.
which 12 teams go in and Notre Dame is on the outside looking in because you know you got to fit in those powerhouses like um what was it Tulane?
And James Madison you got to make room for James Madison to get in the college football playoffs right?
Right?
Yeah.
But I understand conference.
Conference in a parks and rec league does not mean that they should qualify for the brackets.
So I've not worked up.
I've not worked up about this, but Notre Dame was so worked up because they they were what the 11th or 12th ranked team in the country.
Right.
They were the first
and they ended up being the first team out by a couple of these smaller schools because they won their conference championship.
So Notre
name has stomped their little feet and said, well, we're not accepting any invitations to any other bowl games.
They're not going to take any consolation prize.
That, that was the actual sound bite right there from the press conference.
Yes.
That there will, there will not be any Notre Dame bowl football.
I wish you could see how happy he looks at this.

And really, that might be the end of our college football playoff coverage, much like last year.
Like, does it does it really exist?
I don't know, you know.
But oh, the thing is Notre Dame was out.
But of course they had to find a way to squeeze Alabama in.

It has been 10 years that we've had the college football playoff now and sure we've adjusted the format once now.
They still have not come up with a formula or a policy to figure out how to deal with conference championship games.
It is absolutely ridiculous because they
are rewarding some teams for playing in a conference championship by getting in because they won it.
And they're hurting other teams because they lost it.
But I can't remember who it was.
BYU.
BYU got killed by Texas Tech and BYU got dumped out.
Alabama got killed by Georgia and they stayed exactly where they were.
It doesn't make any sense.
No, it never it never has,
you know, it's no, it's fine.

The only college football game that matters is Saturday.
Yes, Alicia being in the Navy will tell you it is, of course, the Army Navy, the Army Navy game.
Very she would say Navy Navy Army game.
Yes.
So we'll I'm sure we'll have more to say about that coming up temperatures around the state right now for above here in Chippewa Falls.

On the positive side of the ledger, LaCrosse is sitting there at 5 degrees and Oshkosh, you got one itty bitty little degree.

There will be a little light snow today in places and then the chance of an inch or two or more coming up tomorrow, especially just north of the I-94 corridor, maybe a little rain to the south of there.

All right, well, let's start that again, Pat.
The United States may be on the verge of losing the independent agencies that oversee consumer protection, worker protection,
environmental protection and more, replaced with nothing but lackeys of whichever politician has the most power.
See, a right-wing group that favors what's called unitary executive power, well, at least when a conservative is president, they're gonna argue their case today before the US Supreme Court.
With the Chief Justice, John Roberts, who has been pushing this idea behind the scenes for 40 years,
dating back to his days working in the Reagan administration.
At issue is whether President Trump can fire supposedly independent board members of some of these agencies.
And it is something that was not necessarily restricted to one party until fairly recently.
Because frankly for the entire breadth of our nation's history.
We've had arguments back and forth about executive power.
We've actually been arguing about this since before we became a country.
America's first great debate was between what you would call monarchists, people who wanted the strength and security of a monarch, a king or a queen, and Republicans with a small r, who wanted democracy and wanted that democracy stabilized with checks and balances.
It's really interesting now that the capital R Republicans are now the monarchists amongst us.
Now they will say, as John Roberts did in a 2010 Supreme Court decision, that these independent agencies and boards, well, they prevent a chief executive from being fully accountable for discharging his duties.
That's not what they actually mean.
when they say full accountability for a president, what they mean is they want the president to have full power.
The accountability doesn't come from having power.
The accountability comes from the series of checks and balances that we have set up over the years, including agencies that are created by Congress, which is a separate branch of government.
And these agencies were designed to have
independent boards to guard against corrupt political influence.
And that's why we have a Consumer Product Safety Commission, a National Labor Relations Board, a Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Elections Commission, and a Federal Reserve Central Bank, and more.
And this is the part where people go,
oh yeah,
they're all bureaucrats.
This is all staff with nothing but bureaucrats.
If that's the outlook you want,
You can choose to have that.
What's supposed to be real is that each of these has some of the best and brightest people who are in those particular fields who are free from partisan political influence and can do the people's business without fear that they have to do whatever Barack Obama says or George W. Bush says or Donald Trump says.
Presidents of both parties
and members of Congress in both parties, will spar over individual nominations to all of these boards, but the larger goal remains of true public service that is less tainted by party politics.
But far-right conservatives know the only way they can ram through their extreme agenda is that when they get a little power, seize more by blowing up the very system that protects our country from extremism.
Is this a neat and tidy case of Republicans versus Democrats?
Not historically.
Presidents of both parties would love to remove impediments in those agencies.
Franklin Roosevelt tried to fire a federal trade commissioner who consistently voted to dismiss complaints against big companies.
When the U.S.
Supreme Court shot down FDR and stood up for the independent agencies, Roosevelt tried packing the Supreme Court but had to backtrack because fellow Democrats saw the move as unnecessary meddling.
But unnecessary meddling is in the DNA of today's GOP.
And so we're back at the point of undermining America's independent agencies to satisfy the far right's lust for power.
Other politicians in the past on the right side of the spectrum were too coy or too savvy to go along with such a brazen scheme.
Eventually they found a guy with no reservations about seeking a level of power preferred by monarchs or dictators or mob bosses.
And now that guy is back in the White House and it has activated the baser instincts of the six right-wing justices who today will hear a case that they have been hoping would come before them for a long time now.
So today, the monarchists will have their moment.
We may not get a ruling until next June and that might be fine.
The closer we get to the midterms for voters to see the perils of a monarchy, the better chance we might have to preserve democracy.

Let's see, we've also got the anniversary today for the dissolution of the Soviet Union that happened this day.
in 1991.

No, I chose to stay home.
I had work to do.

She couldn't couldn't bike out there for that one this time.
And can I just say, wait, open the show with like some melancholy that like got me a little choked up, John
Lennon, that whole
thing.
Like that was really instrumental in my life.

Recognizing what their impact was as individuals and as a group.

It was and I was in high school and I would have a radio next to the bed and I would listen to the radio before I fell asleep.
Usually to some top 40 station and to have a DJ come in and share that news.

We're talking about the daughters over the weekend.
And, um, you know, so she and her boyfriend lived down in Dallas and she's like, Oh, he made brownies for me.
And then I found out he put peanut butter in them.
And I mean, this, and we both were kind of joked like, Yeah, we're going to miss him.
He seemed like such a nice guy.
But I mean, you put peanut butter in the brownies.
It's one thing to have a brownie and put like a peanut butter frosting on it, but the peanut butter was in the
the brown it was peanut butter brownie.
Did it like mess up the consistency?
I don't know.
I wasn't there.
But I just know that I don't think you're supposed to do that.
What if it tastes good?
That would be good.
Yeah.
Well, then I at least set us up for it.
Don't say here's a you know, it'd be like handing somebody what you you know, you've been handed a cookie, you're sure is chocolate chip.
Because you don't look very closely and then you bite into it and it's oatmeal raisin.
I like

You can like it, but not if you're expecting chocolate chip.
It's like, is this
about expectations?
This is about expectations.

Because I feel like the brownie can be a base for anything.

I think of Duncan Hines or Betty Crocker's listening Include a little sign that you can then put on top of the brownie pan that says you know peanuts or peanut butter or whatever Weird stuff you want to put in your brownies or just be pure and put chocolate chips in there
I'm looking at Parker's face, and he's definitely something going on in Parker's head right now like I know

And again, we've had this discussion before of how it seemed like for the longest time people thought that everybody was being told to go to college and the trades were being kind of overlooked and now I hear all the time that college isn't for everybody and I'm glad that we're encouraging an education in the trades more than
But I also am here to guard against letting the pendulum swing too far in the other way.
We need people with liberal arts degrees and study the humanities and things like that as well.
We need it all.
There's gotta be educational opportunity for everybody.
Yes.
Oh, look at this.
I got Rob is back.
I was a little worried about Rob and Tigerton.
I heard about, you know, he'd heard his knee or something.
And now he's back.
He's out plowing snow.
So we'll find out what he's had to say as well when we get past seven o'clock here.
