You're listening to Mornings with Pat Kratlow powered by Up North News.
Now, from our Lake WSOTA studio, here is the founding editor of Up North News, Pat Kratlow.
Well, hey there, Wisconsin, good morning.
6.06 on a Monday morning, November 10th.
2025, it's another beautiful morning to have you here up north, live from Lake WSOTA.
From wherever you're listening across the civic media, radio network, or catching us on YouTube, Facebook, podcast, website, all the places.
Glad you're here getting your week started.
I've got a question for you.
How you feeling about the Packers chances tonight against the Eagles?
Were the Packers caught off guard last week by Carolina because they were already looking ahead to tonight's big game or are they just not quite at the high caliber we've come to expect?
How do you think we're going to do tonight?
You can let us know by phone, by text.
by email, by all kinds of ways.
Voice note on the app, 855-75-CIVIC-855-7524842.
And just let us know, do you think the Packers are going to get it done tonight against the Philadelphia Eagles?
In a related question, the Wisconsin Badgers defeated, they had an upset against Washington.
the crowd stormed the field and there's been a lot of people going hey hey take it down a notch here it's not the end of the world we beat you know a team if we won a game yeah they were ranked like what 23rd in the nation or something like that but is that a reason to storm the field now you might disagree and call in and say yeah I was on the field it was a big deal to win in you know those kind of snowy conditions and pull off a victory that's just great
Now you might also be asking, wait, Pat, isn't the question of the day all about this alleged budget deal that's come together late last night in Washington, DC.
Now I'm gonna have a lot to say about that in just a little bit, but it's still from a legislative standpoint, I would still call it the primordial soup from which policy eventually emerges.
I don't think we know enough to actually make it our question of the day because then we will have to ask,
Did Democrats in fact cave on this?
And not even Democrats, just a handful of them that made this deal come together yesterday.
Did they cave or do they know?
Does that small group of Democrats know something we don't in terms of?
You know, you take this deal and last week's election results already helped show voters where Republicans are in terms of causing the shutdown and taking away, you know, food aid and all of that.
And voters will remember that a year from now in the midterms.
Or will they?
Coming up a little later on the program, speaking of Food Aid and Head Start and things like that, we have the Wisconsin Coordinator for Head Start Programs, and we'll be talking to her about what Head Start is and the Head Start programs that have already had to close in Wisconsin because of what Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans want to do.
to shut down the government and deny federal aid and frankly make up stuff about programs like Head Start and she sets the record straight for us coming up at 7.35.
And at 8.35 we're talking to Tom Nelson.
Of course you can't let today go past the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald without talking about that day in history.
That'll be on today's part of today's history lesson as well a little later on.
Plenty to cover over the weekend here.
including letting us know what you've been up to.
You can call us anytime, 855-75-CIVIC, 855-752-4842.
And temperatures right now around the state, well it's not just the temperatures, it's the conditions.
I mean, we got our first snow burst up here in the Chippewa Falls area yesterday, but it was followed almost immediately by some sunshine because we're way up here at the edge of that system that delivered some snow to the southeastern parts of the state.
In fact, the warmest part of the state right now is one of the furthest points up north.
In La Point near Bayfield, it's 30 degrees there on the shores of Lake Superior, 30.
Whereas in Medford, that's the cold spot, 16 right now.
Chippewa Falls is at 19.
La Crosse 21.
Hayward's at 21.
Oshkosh is at 21.
In Wausau, it's 18 right now.
Wisconsin Rapids reporting 19.
Richland Center's at 23 degrees.
However,
There's still an area where there is some snow and things like that on the text line here.
We've got Jim in Brookfield who says good morning Pat.
Southeast Wisconsin is joining the rest of the state with cold weather.
It's currently 23 in Brookfield and we received an inch of snow over the weekend.
And the radar shows a band of snow that is basically running from right about Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee.
I mean just like blocks north of there, you're probably not getting anything.
But South, down to Racine and Kenosha and out to Union Grove, it looks like a good amount of snow is falling right now in that band.
And it's just rolling right over them.
And then through the...
Northwestern suburbs of Chicago.
So winter's a bit underway.
Let's see if we got any kind of winter conditions in Madison.
Checking in with producer Parker Olson down in Madison Studio A2.
He too adorned in green and gold for tonight's game against the Eagles.
Mr. Olson, good morning.
Did you get some winter down there over the weekend?
Good
morning,
Pat.
We did get a little winter down here.
We had maybe a little over an inch of snow on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
I was really surprised when I woke up and it was actually still white outside.
I thought it was going to kind of be gone before I was even up.
No, you got you got you got the free preview of winter.
It did before you have to subscribe.
You will subscribe whether you want to or not.
But
I'll subscribe, but I'm not paying for
it.
Yeah, pre preview of coming attractions.
Did you do any anything of consequence over the weekend?
Anything of consequence
while we were in whitewater for the football game?
Of course
you were.
Of
course.
Yes.
Also went down to the grandparents after that helped them, you know,
Fixin' the TV, air cam stuff.
fix
in the teeth.
Yep.
I had that I had that with my in-laws.
I heard that they had a computer issue and a computer issue means their iPad because that that's what they
used
to just kind of look at at Facebook and things like that.
And it was just you know how you bring your car into a mechanic and you say it's making a noise and of course when you bring it in the noise isn't there.
Of course.
And so of course I called up and you know it's always tough to to fix these things over the phone.
I mean yeah some days I can get it done some days it's like
I guess I just have to see it.
But this was one of those times where they called it up and they're like, oh, it's working now.
Well, this is really embarrassing.
I'm like, no, no, no, I fixed it with my psychic powers.
It's OK.
It got scared.
I was here.
It got scared.
It's like, oh, no, a young person of the 60s who understands technology.
OK, we'd better we'd better straighten out and be right here.
Yeah.
So anyway, what we we actually went to a first birthday.
One of my my sisters became a grandparent a year ago and and so what would that be a great niece turned one year old.
And we were we were talking afterwards about how you know, traditions come and go, you know, things change all the time.
I mean, I talk I've talked a few times about gender reveals, you know, that was not a thing once upon a time and now it's
Now you're like a weirdo if you don't do a gender reveal, you know, things are just normalized.
And I don't know when exactly, I'm not going to say when it started, but when it became widespread, that one of the things that you do for baby's first birthday is put them in a high chair because I've been to a few parties like this now, and you give them like a little birthday cake.
And then you just let them tear into it with their hands and eat it with their hand like like there's some kind of a cave baby, you know, expect a little
bone to be tied into their hair like pebbles on the Flintstones or something.
Well, are they going to use a fork and knife, Pat?
What do you think
is going to happen?
Look, it's cute and everything.
It just wasn't a thing because back then we called it a mess.
There was there was a big mess to clean up afterwards, but people people really liked it Tony puts up on YouTube smash cake.
Yes.
Yeah, that's that's exactly it so But it was really nice always good to see family and things like that So yeah, so we got a first birthday.
We got first snow, which was you know, okay
We got the
first first badger football win and what feels like forever.
Oh my god.
Yeah
That was I could that was unexpected.
I couldn't believe that at all Pat I'm gonna be honest with you We were we were at our my grandparents when that happened and we got in the car to go home and I looked and I went wait a minute The Badgers won.
I know I saw that on my phone too And I the it wasn't exactly a pretty win from what I understand The Badger scoring drives eight plays
18 yards for a field goal.
Yep, two plays seven yards for a touchdown Six plays 22 yards for a field goal.
So they didn't exactly have any great drives.
No, apparently this was the defense where the heroes here now upsetting 23rd ranked Washington by a final score of 13 to 10 So, you know, good good on them.
That's you know, take take the win.
That's all right.
Oh, absolutely Next Saturday, they will have a little
tougher hill to climb.
They're taking on second ranked Indiana.
And you can catch the pregame Saturday starting at nine a.m.
on several civic media radio stations.
I
think I saw the line for that.
The betting line is like 30 and a half.
Yeah.
Tony notes.
I noticed this too.
The punter was the leading passer for the Badgers.
Yeah.
And asks, has that ever happened before?
I don't know.
Not in a way I wouldn't think.
Tony is also saying go pack go.
They will win tonight.
They play to the level of their opponent.
I bet we saw that with Carolina too.
So yeah, that's possible.
Roger and Stevens Point puts on Facebook.
If the Badgers won, so will the Packers.
From Alicia, I saw the cutest video.
Family came to Wisconsin for a kid's birthday.
The kid thought they were in Iowa and he was surprised with tickets to the game tonight for his 10th birthday.
Oh cool.
So let's go
into the game.
That's very nice.
That's great.
Alicia also says, I'm going to say Democrats caved.
I'm extremely disappointed in them, and we'll get into that in just a sec.
Roger on Facebook also adds, I would like to give kudos to two of my first cousins who officiated in Saturday's WIAA State Girls Volleyball Championship matches at the Rush Center in Green Bay in the D4 final.
Barb from Monroe was first referee in the D1 final.
Rich from Nina was second referee.
Thank you all high school officials for your service.
Yes.
Very much so.
Yes.
So glad to see that as well.
Just a nice weekend all around.
I will say we were not looking to go Christmas shopping when we went down to Eau Claire.
We were just going out to dinner, but we had to go by the area around Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire.
And malls
malls aren't what they used to be.
No, that's what I'm told.
Except at Christmas time.
I mean, that place was loaded.
It was the parking lot was packed.
The streets, you know, you had to wait two cycles to get through, you know, red lights.
It was like, we're looking around like, do none of you people shop online?
Have you suddenly discovered retail?
This is crazy.
All we could figure is there was just
Nothing else going on.
It was a, you know, Saturday and like it was getting cold out.
People were maybe thinking about, you know, picking up the first couple of Christmas gifts or something.
So
there
they
were.
That certainly could
be.
They were out and about.
Yes.
So.
All right.
We also want to let you know you can sign up for our daily newsletters at Up North News.
Up North News is a separate entity from Civic Media, but we so love this little get together that we do together in partnership weekday mornings from six until nine.
and you can stay up to date on all we do at UpNorth News by heading over to UpNorthNewsWI.com and clicking on subscribe up at the top of the banner and you can also see on Sunday mornings our question of the week and this week the new question yesterday dealt with marijuana legalization.
Well maybe make that a question of the day one of these days this week although you can weigh in at any point but there was a new piece of bipartisan legislation designed to
perhaps legalized marijuana, but to what level is the big question?
You can do it fully across the board, legal for recreational purposes and everything.
You can do it for medicinal purposes only.
You can do it for just things like CBD oil, which is what we have here in Wisconsin, or make it completely illegal because you consider it to be a gateway drug.
What do you think we should do about that?
So we'll ask that throughout the week, but that's our question of the week in our Sunday morning newsletter.
We'll talk about a deal to potentially end the government shutdown coming up in just a sec first from the heart of America's up north live from Lake Wissota.
Thanks for making this the place to spend part of your mornings.
I'm Pat Krightlump.
This is the Civic Media Radio Network.
Now we gave you just a sample of
what
Who's that give that give that
again?
I believe that would be Tony and the little cheerleaders using the voice note feature on the Civic Media app Get that app.
You can call us from the app.
You can text us through the app You can leave us a voice note on the app as well just like Tony and the littles over there sending your go pack go or how do you think the Packers are gonna do against the Eagles or
Do you have an early take on this possible deal to end the government shutdown?
However you want to respond, use the voice note feature on the Civic Media app just like that or call us or text us or get in the comment sections of YouTube and Facebook.
We'd love to have you along.
That's our question of the day.
How do you think the Packers are going to do tonight against the Eagles?
Well, there is the potential of a deal to end the government shutdown.
It did not come in your traditional bipartisan way where Republican leadership, Democratic leadership, President Trump all just kind of hammered things out and said, you know, we've got to do this for the American people.
No, it went the way that I think some people
expected it to or dreaded, and that was that a handful of Democrats, if you want to call them centrists or moderates, you can, that's your decision.
But these eight people, most of whom you've never heard of, except maybe independent, Angus King of Maine and Dick Durbin, one of the senior members of the Senate from Illinois, and six others.
He decided to get together with Republicans in a proposal that would end the shutdown Now you might be thinking okay well Democrats have been holding firm That in order to get their votes and they only need four votes not eight, but to get four Democratic votes Or what was it six votes, you know, we'll we'll have to agree to
not allow these major price hikes on healthcare insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act.
I mean, that was kind of the line in the sand.
And these Democrats and an independent got a deal that does some other things.
It does, you know, extend government funding for a while.
It reverses
the mass firing of federal workers by the Trump administration that ensures that those federal workers will get some back pay.
There are some other things in here that the Trump administration does not like.
However, when it comes to the Affordable Care Act subsidies, not a word in there.
There is a promise from Senate Republican leader, John Thune, to hold a vote in the very near future.
on those health insurance subsidies.
So there's that.
And there's the extension of opening the government.
It really only goes until like late January.
So we're kicking the can down the road again.
And it is possible that we have started a process where you will not see airports shut down and snarled up over the Thanksgiving holiday.
thousands of flights that were canceled over the weekend, disrupting people.
I don't even know if Dr. Christon Lairley is joining us in 10 minutes because I know that she got caught up in some of the travel chaos over the weekend here.
But we'll jump right back into it in late January, perhaps with another government shutdown, especially if, as expected, at least as I expect, Lucy's going to pull the football away again.
And
Those those eight people Democrats and and independence playing the role of Charlie Brown Saying oh well the Senate Republican leader is promising a vote on this.
So let's go for it.
Let's go kick that football Let's see how that works out for them Now as I as I never mind saying I don't I don't mind being wrong if it's for a good reason here and if this leads to a
a deal of vote from on health insurance subsidies and Now it's just a standalone vote now Republicans have to go on the record about it and maybe just maybe some kind of a deal is found on that as well and or in the midterm elections a year from now voters now see who actually wanted to
End of funding for Head Start.
Who wanted to snarl up air traffic?
Who wanted to literally take food off the tables?
And here's what I mean by literally.
Donald Trump on Friday lost a court fight about holding back, you know, SNAP benefits through supplemental funding.
The court said, you got to fund this.
Governor Evers took it and ran with it.
What was it?
Overnight, Thursday into Friday and said, SNAP is going to be, the benefits are going to be funded for November.
People bought groceries over the weekend.
With that, and President Trump is now instructing states to do whatever they can to claw that back.
What are these families supposed to do?
Like take their groceries, pack them up and go back to the grocery store and go, oh, I'm sorry, President Trump says we don't deserve to eat.
So here's your groceries back.
Governor Evers put out a one word statement.
No, which was pretty good.
Senator Tammy Baldwin, by the way, not one of those who went along with this deal.
And she talked about how Wisconsinites need some breathing room, she says, and cannot afford to have their health care costs doubled.
That's what I've been fighting for.
I've been at
in Washington at the table trying to open our government and find a compromise to make sure that 275,000 Wisconsinites don't have their health care costs go through the roof next year.
Donald Trump and my Republican colleagues have refused to even talk.
This wink and a nod to deal with the health care crisis later with no actual guarantees is just not enough for me.
or the Wisconsin families I work for.
The clock is up.
Families are shopping for insurance now, and I refuse to sign off on a deal that doesn't lower working families' health care costs.
And that's ultimately what this deal is about.
This is about a small group of Democrats saying, you know, yes, everybody's health insurance bills are gonna go up 50, 100, 200%, and we'll continue to try to blame Republicans for that.
But you're still gonna have to pay it in the meantime as the as the ransom price from Republicans to reopen the government Today's history lesson is coming up and dr. Lyrely says I'm here.
I'm here.
Okay.
She will be here too.
I'm pack right low.
You're up north
It's time once again for today's history lesson on mornings with Pat Cranklow.
To all who've come to this happy place, welcome.
Ladies and gentlemen,
the Beatles!
That's one small step for man.
Well, I'm not a
crook.
You believe in miracles?
Yes!
You know, this depression is gonna be so great.
We'll be the ones eating the cats and the dogs.
That's gonna be fun.
Once again, it is time to take another revealing peek back into
history.
Kristen,
what's your weakness?
Watching you guys try to respond to this song.
Totally,
totally
missing your cue on that.
All right.
Dr. Kristen Lyrely is here.
We're going to start today's history lesson talking about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame holding its 2025 induction ceremony Saturday night in LA honoring a range of artists across the generations.
The class of 25 included Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Warren Zevon, but also Cindy Lauper, the White Stripes, Outcast Soundgarden, and Salt and Peppa, made up of salt.
Cheryl James, DJ Deirdre Roper, and right there, birthday girl Sandra Denton, a.k.a.
Peppa.
Today's her birthday.
She turns 56, and she is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Love it.
Passing of the torch, a bit of a generational transition class.
Who would have thought in our generation that Iggy Pop would be seen as an elder statesman?
And he was introducing the white stripes or at least Jack White Meg White intentionally hopped off the public stage in 2007 Let's see outcast did not include Andre 3000 in a later performance with other rap stars
There was Cindy Lauper being inducted by a Chapel Roan.
David Letterman gave a posthumous tribute to Warren Zevon.
For Soundgarden, Chris Cornell's daughter Lily spoke on behalf of her late father, Chris.
There was Brian Adams introducing Joe Cocker.
That checks out.
game respects game on vocal stylings.
And then, of course, all this will be wrapped up into a concert that you can see on TV in a few weeks here, closer to the holiday season.
So
it is.
I love watching that, just remembering all of the music and seeing all of the respect across generations.
I just I get so amped up with that.
Yes.
So look for that.
ABC and Disney usually package that up in some way, shape or form.
So that kicks off today's history lesson.
But
I'll tell you what, we didn't, Alicia, we didn't forget you.
I know you got it.
Play it, Parker.
We didn't know we were gonna get all the ruffles and flourishes here too.
Gotta have all the flourishes.
You have to build.
I
guess.
Yeah.
Happy birthday to the United States Marine Corps 250th anniversary today.
Marking its founding by the Continental Congress originally formed as an infantry unit aboard naval vessels.
It has become the maritime land force service branch of the United States.
The Marines are responsible for seizing or defending advanced naval bases and other land operations to support naval campaigns.
and advance the development of amphibious landing forces for the Army and Air Force as well.
They also protect American embassies and consulates around the world.
Happy birthday Marine Corps, 250 years old today.
On this day in 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt became the first sitting U.S.
president to make an official trip outside the country, doing so to inspect progress on the Panama Canal.
All right, back to the music charts.
This day in 1974, 51 years ago, the number one hit was from Bachman Turner Overdrive.
And baby, you just ain't seen nothing yet.
Became just the second Canadian band, BTO, to hit number one in the U.S.
The first Canadian band to hit number one in the country,
Also had Randy Bachman in it.
The guess who would top the charts with American Woman back in 1970.
Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
A Canadian band topped the charts with American Woman.
Yes.
In fact, originally they wanted to call
it... What does
Canada without us?
Originally they were going to call it Canadian Woman.
Somebody suggested maybe the market would be bigger if you changed the name and they
did.
A little less firepower than
Canadian Woman.
Don't know you you walk into that one yourself Parker and tell me how you'd write that song and
So many different ways we could go with this conversation.
Yeah, and we're just gonna carry you right on Let's go to 1973 Sunday marked 52 years since Billy Joel released his second album You're gonna know it by the very first few notes
This sounds so familiar.
Yeah, I know.
What could it be?
I wonder
what it is.
That, of course, would be the title track to Piano Man based on his nights performing at a Los Angeles piano bar called The Executive Room.
The song would only peak at number 25 on the charts, but, of course, would go on to live forever in pop music history.
Have you watched the documentary yet?
I have.
Oh, my goodness.
Yo,
Greg and
I did like an hour on it.
It felt like one Friday.
So good.
It's so good.
Just so good.
Also, 1973.
50 years ago today, the number one album was by Elton John.
Your math ain't mathin' this morning, Cap.
1973.
52
years ago today.
Oh, you
said 50.
No, 50 for the Edmund Fitzgerald.
52 for this.
Today's Edmund Fitzgerald day?
Are we jumping ahead?
Kristen's been traveling a lot here.
We're gonna get to it.
We're gonna get to it.
On this day in 1973, 52 years ago, today, Elton John had the number one album with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which of course had the title track, Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting, Benny and the Jets, and more.
On the birthday list for today, Tracy Morgan is 57 years old.
Another funny man with the same birthday, Tom Papa, one of my favorites is 57 today.
Ellen Pompeo.
Meredith Gray from Gray's Anatomy is 56 years old today.
Rapper Eve is 47.
This is the anniversary of the birth of Carl Staling.
If you're younger than me, or Kristen, maybe you don't know Carl Staling.
You know his music because you heard it every Saturday morning on all the various Warner Brothers cartoons.
Somebody had to
write all those background music, you
know.
That just makes me feel happy.
Doesn't it though?
That's what I thought.
You
get your bowl of cereal, you know, and turn on the TV and watch little Bugs Bunny and Road Runner and try not to let, you know, mom and dad wake up and yell at you.
So, yeah, those were the best Saturday mornings.
I love this.
I still do this one.
Bring this one up a little bit.
Oh, it's gone.
It's just one of those things that when you're angry, like... Anyway, on this day in 1983, Bill Gates introduced the world to Microsoft Windows 1.0.
Did they call it 1.0 or did they just call it Windows?
Nope.
Just called it Windows.
It's one of those.
They didn't call it World War One at the time either, but we're just getting used to it.
Let's see.
On this day in 1969 was the debut of a brand new show for kids on the public broadcasting system.
Do you know that Luther Van Ross was one of the first guests
on Sesame Street?
Oh, I totally believe that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
With his group of like other people who sang.
Mm-hmm.
Yep.
No, I remember this.
I was in kindergarten and teachers saying, oh, there's this brand new show you all got to watch.
And we did.
So I'm an OG Sesame Street viewer.
You're an OG.
So many things.
I'm an OG.
It's so much old.
So
much old.
With a capital O.
Yeah.
That is a big capital O on that one.
Let's see.
On this day in 1979, the Eagles hit number one on the singles chart with Heartache Tonight.
It was their fifth number one.
And believe it or not, that was their last number one song.
Heartache Tonight on this day in 1979.
So it's been 46 years since the Eagles were on top of the pop chart.
One more birthday, and that would be singer Miranda Lambert.
She is 42 years old today.
Well,
I know you're saying, wait, what's with the Edmund Fitzgerald?
We're a reminder that at 835, we're going to be talking to Tom Nelson.
We're going to be playing back our August interview where he wrote a new book.
Again, highly recommended about the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Things you probably did not know about the construction and maintenance or lack thereof of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Some of the shortcuts that were taken and frankly how it's a bit of a metaphor for the economy and the way things were run in the late 60s and early 70s.
We fall into this mindset in the country that where we're at now is where we're always going to stay.
You know, like with all the bubbles, the housing bubble, the dot-com bubble.
Well, it was no different back then.
The economy was at its post-war peak, OK?
But we kind of had a head start.
The rest of the world was in shambles, you know?
And we thought, oh, we're always going to be at the top for manufacturing.
So we can start taking shortcuts.
And that never works out well.
And it didn't work out well for that freighter.
And frankly, for a lot of other things that Tom Nelson does a great job of writing about.
So play back the interview.
But if you would like to hear a longer form interview with Tom Nelson, I'm willing to bet that somewhere on the Civic Media site, you can find back episodes of the Dr. Kristen Lyrely show because she spent a little time with Tom Nelson as well.
It's true.
That was such a fun interview.
Growing up, I loved the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Is that weird?
Because I was like five when this happened.
But my family, my dad was obsessed with this.
So we took like a pilgrimage and we saw some wreckage.
And it really, I think, reflected what a lot of people were thinking about the American economy.
People just instinctively at the time understood what was happening to workers and how workers were being sacrificed for profits.
And you know, it's not all that different now.
No, it's not.
There's there's so many lessons that have still not been learned.
And Tom does a really good job of taking the historical, but also the political and bringing it to a contemporary frame.
And so again, highly recommended the book, highly recommend the interview, come on back in at 835.
And by the way, if you can't stick around for that, you can certainly, again, like I said, look for Kristen's interview, but you can also just
Follow this program as a podcast, and then you can always come back to it, including the interviews that you missed.
Head over to Spotify, Apple, wherever you get your podcasts.
Let's look at the national day calendar here.
Producer Parker Olson manages the list for us now.
Can't wait to hear what's on the national day calendar today.
Well, Pat, today is the start of kindness week.
Oh.
Yes, I felt that yesterday in the airport, even though everybody was all stressed out and it was crazy and there were so many flights that were canceled and delayed, people just seem to get it.
Their expectations seem to be that we are all in the same boat and I didn't see any, everybody was bending over backwards to help each other.
It was pretty cool.
That was when I saw you do a video about that for social media and it was a kind of an unexpected pleasure because I mean, you know how people treat the airport counter like they're all diving for the last cabbage patch doll back in the 80s shopping for Christmas, you know, and beating up on each other, which by the way, I saw a clip out of.
was it from Japan, I believe, where they're doing this with like some kind of a new Christmas doll type thing is
going to be all the
rage and they're doing just the old school knockdown drag amounts to try to get toys off the shelf.
They're toys people.
Come
on.
Enjoy that.
Yeah.
Hey, I'm going to order mine online.
Yes.
Well, I said before you would never have known looking at the Oakwood Mall area, but we also got that on the the text line as well.
People saying, yeah, that their their their malls were busy.
Tony was saying that up in the Duluth area, the area on the Duluth Mall was had heavy traffic in it as well.
So
they were seeking warmth.
Have you been to Duluth?
We'll be talking.
I love
Dylan.
I love Dylan.
If it's Gerald and more with Kristen Lierly and Selena Heller from Up North News, all still ahead.
I'm Pat Krightlow.
This is the Civic Media Radio Network.
You're listening to Civic Media.
Find the latest news, information, and archives of all your favorite shows on the Civic Media website, civicmedia.us.
You knew we weren't going to skip this.
Of course, it's got to have a little Gordon Lightfoot on this big day.
And there's your earworm for the rest of the day, commemorating the Ed and Fitzgerald and the loss of those on board.
Selena Heller joins us as well from Up with News.
Oh, and there's whiskers.
The cat just walking right through
for the obligatory close up coming up.
Hey, we've everybody, Selena included, in their green and gold for tonight,
for
tonight's game versus
the Eagles.
That's right.
Coverage will begin at five o'clock on Civic Media Stations in Richland Center, Park Falls, Watoma, and Racine.
Racine, where they're still getting snow.
They're like in a little snow belt there.
I'd be curious to see how much they end up with before this is all done.
Selena, did you just get like a little snow burst down there in Eau Claire as well, like not a ton?
Yep.
Yep, and there was still a little on the ground a little while after but yep, we sure did.
Big flakes.
Did you
get anything in the Green Bay area, Kristen?
So I was flying back from Washington DC, but when we got to Detroit, everything was white.
Ooh,
okay.
Yeah, winter travel, yay.
We got de-iced before we came back.
Yeah, it's winter is here.
Well, again, it could be that
Maybe this is the worst of the travel snarls, depending on how this alleged deal does better.
Uh, does, you know, if it does better to pass and get the government open and get the planes flying again, at least till late January, maybe, maybe we're just alleviating traffic for the holidays and then shutting it back down again.
I don't know.
Tony says the earworm for the admin Fitzgerald is much better than the ear, earworm for baby shark.
Very true.
Agreed.
That's the story of Tony's life, though.
I know.
Let's see.
Roger on Facebook says happy 80th birthday to Donna Fargo, who had the song The Happiest Girl in the whole USA.
That
was a very cheesy country song from the mid-70s.
I
love how Roger always brings that back, like that super deep cut.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, he doesn't he
doesn't
do the doesn't do the surface stuff at all.
Let's see.
Salina is going to talk more in our next hour about the snap benefits, which again, if you missed it earlier, a judge on Thursday told the Trump administration, no, you got to pay full benefits for the month of November.
And so Thursday night overnight, the Evers administration, you know, made sure to replenish the coffers.
People were able to buy groceries.
Trump said over the weekend he instructed the USDA to somehow
claw back the funds that had gone out while the appeal was being heard.
And Parker, you're looking at the AP and apparently another judge has dealt Trump a setback.
I will say the Evers response to that was a simple no.
That was all that he had to say.
Parker, what's new this morning?
Yeah, just broke from the AP that the snap benefits for the month of November are supposed to be paid.
This is from a
Judge appeals judge,
I
believe I'm not finding from where from quite yet.
Okay, well, it's fine.
So that's so a new
appeals court judge
ruling saying, All right.
So
do the right thing, which were you so proud of Governor Evers when he did that and actually fed Wisconsinites?
Like that is your job.
Thank you so much for having the courage to do it.
Yeah.
And
for acting fast,
you
do not wait.
If you've got a window, you take it.
You take advantage of it.
So anyway, but it does put, it has put a lot of people in a worrisome place.
And Celine's going to tell us more about that in just a bit, but we are
getting through the rest of today's history and entertainment news.
I believe we left off with this is National Kindness Week.
And I mean, we've got that covered, you know, in bulk here.
We
are oozing with kindness on Mondays when Kristen and Selina are here the rest
of
the week.
We're kind of on our own.
I'll sketch you
then.
It really does.
Come
on.
Parker is super kind.
He is,
but
I mean, can he really offset this much, you know, cynicism plan?
Anyway, Parker, what else do we have on the calendar this week?
Well, Pat, it is National Recycling Week this week.
Oh, I like that.
All right.
Me too.
Me too.
Reduce, reuse, recycle.
Recycling.
Recycling.
Recycling.
Recycling.
Recycling.
Recycling.

vanilla cupcake vanilla cupcake day.
I would partake in that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I love a good cupcake.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Take it.
If it were chocolate day, better.
That would be better.
I was just gonna say no
one's like
really going through the roof for the vanilla.
Yeah.
No, no, just not.
But hey, somebody had to give it a day.
So
whatever you want on top of your vanilla cupcake, that's the beauty of a vanilla cupcake.
That's true.
It's a canvas.
It is.
It was like
dump
stuff
on
it.
The dump stuff.
What are you going to put on
it?
All right.
And what else?
It is World Immunization Day, which reminds me of my day.
What?
Those
things still work.
That
was my cue to Kristen.
Hey
Kristen, should people get their immunizations?
Please, please talk to your, you know, it's not for everybody, but it is for most of us.
So please talk to your healthcare provider and find out what you should get.
There's a whole schedule.
There is information out there.
Find out the risks and benefits and make really good choices for yourself.
Most of us should get immunizations there, lifesaving.
Yeah, and there are people, by the way, who did not get their full slate of immunizations because of, you know, their own parents' decisions.
And so you might, now, if you're a young adult, you might want to check in with your, you know, your new, you're not seeing a pediatrician anymore.
You're a grownup now.
You're seeing a grownup doctor.
And your grownup doctor might have to tell you, you know, that there's some immunizations to catch up on.
So don't be afraid to ask.
Pat, it's not just for kids.
There are plenty of immunizations that grown-ups like college students and grown-ups need at that stage in life.
For example, the shingle shot.
Yes.
Because you don't want shingles?
Trust me.
No, no, you do not.
And the shingle shot is not easy, but shingles is way, way, way worse.
Don't play the odds.
Please don't play the odds.
Trust me.
Get the shots.
The shots are, I'm so glad that I did.
And of course, flu shot.
COVID shot.
All that now.
RSV.
RSV now as well.
It is that season.
Yes, so please take advantage of World Immunization Day and take care of things there.
Along with the Packer game tonight, one more sports note to tell you about the Badger men's basketball team.
Their season's underway.
They will be playing against Ball State tomorrow evening.
Coverage begins at seven o'clock on several stations across the Civic Media Radio Network.
And if I'm not mistaken, I believe, yes, women's basketball for the Badgers.
You can hear that tonight.
against Milwaukee starting at 610 on some of the stations of the Civic Media Radio Network.
I'm Pat Critello from Up North News, much more after the 7 o'clock news here on the Civic Media Radio Network, you're
