How was the weekend looking back at it?
Did it turn out the way that you had hoped the way that you expected?
Maybe more fun.
you know, the weather could not have been more gorgeous and cooperative most of the time.
We had both our daughters and all four grandkids out here and it was just amazing.
However, while it's nice having the grandkids around, we ended up making a unique discovery as their visit this time turned up something from their last visit, which was
to put it mildly gross beyond belief.
So stick around for a new chapter of Tales from Grandma and Grandpa's House coming up.
But on the program today, we're going to be talking a bit about some of the big news since we were last together here live.
And that is the news by Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley.
Well, you know the saying go big or go home.
She decided to go home.
she's not going to face the prospect of being ousted by progressive appeals judge Chris Taylor.
We will review her interesting statement saying that she's not going to seek reelection.
Meanwhile, Vice President J.D.
Vance has decided to go big.
He's going big on amplifying the Republican playbook all about fear and loathing, which
As I watched the speech in La Crosse and then reread the transcript of the speech in La Crosse, fear and loathing were the only two touchstones from his remarks.
And I mean, seriously, nothing substantive beyond the immigrants are going to get you.
They're going to get your job.
They're taking your money.
Our streets are not safe.
And, you know, wrapped in the, oh, the great American worker that we've been hosing for decades here.
We'll talk to Superior Mayor Jim Payne.
He will recap Pride Weekend up in the Twin Ports and tell us why the event doesn't take place in June, like in so many other communities.
We'll also talk about, in terms of Labor Day weekend, how thousands upon thousands of American workers, you know, the people that the President and the Vice President love to talk about, but thousands upon thousands of American workers had their collective bargaining rights ripped away.
by an anti-union president who sees public sector workers as unworthy of job site protection.
We will talk to Dan Schaefer from the Reconpopulation Area about the new school year and how a new state budget is not making life any easier for struggling school districts and they will probably be setting another record for referendum requests to fill in the gaps from lazy legislators.
And coming up at 805, we will start a new weekly visit with Courier Newsroom's Cam Stevenson from Capitol Hill.
He's the author of the Below the Beltway daily newsletter about what's going on in Congress.

How was your weekend?

Look, it was it was a very exciting game.

And look, the main thing I think we have to start with, yes, the brewers lost, we'll get to that.
But the slog is over.
19 games in 18 days without a day off.
And so in the end, the brewers won nine of them, lost 10 of them after dropping that heartbreaker yesterday against the Phillies 10 to eight.
But again, magic number 19.
We're just shugging away here.
The brewers are up for nothing.
in the second inning.
But Jacob Mizorovsky, again, left early four and a third innings, giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
And so what was necessary was six relief pitchers afterward, all showing the strain of a marathon stretch of games.
And, you know, so you tell me watching in person, Mizorovsky, sure fun to watch, but he's not going to have a 10 year career.
Let me let me just boldly make that prediction.
I don't know.

He's going to fall off.
His arm's going to fall off.
One day he's going to throw it, which, by the way, basically did happen to Shelby Miller.

One of the relief pitchers who, right away, pulled a Rodney Dangerfield out of Caddyshack.

But a couple of our younger grandkids refer to it as a Lego cup.
And if you think about it, sure enough, this looks exactly like a cup that you could use at a Lego set.
Anyway, we didn't really notice that they'd been missing because we don't use them regularly, you know, they were just kind of there and you don't see if you don't think about it.
Yeah.
And one of my daughters comes up and she's got two of these yellow cups.
And she says, you know how downstairs where the kids play in the playroom in the basement there, there's a bookshelf.
And at the very bottom of the bookshelf, there's like a little cabinet, you know, with a door, you can open up the door and there's you can put stuff in the little cabinet.
Oh, no, really?
Yeah.
Apparently, they had some milk and I don't know if it was cookies or what it was.
And then they treated it like was put in finger quotes, their refrigerator.
And so they put these yellow cups in the quote unquote refrigerator in the bookshelf.
And I've run this thing through the dishwasher a couple of times now.
Still got a
It's all it's got just enough.
I mean, just
two little specks.
But those two specks make me feel like I'd keel right over.
Like month old milk.
No, like six month old.
They were in that thing for like six months.
Ah, yes, the tales of Grandma Grandpa's house of, where did the dishes go?
Oh, that's where they've been all this time.

Let's see, a week ago we asked with Donald Trump attacking mail-in voting, what do you think?
Should we keep it or get rid of it?
You overwhelmingly said keep it.
This time around we went with dreamers.
You know, the children who came to this country with their parents who were undocumented
and have been trying to make a better life for their kids, knowing that they risk deportation, and in many cases did get deported.
But what about the kids themselves?
The dreamers who have worked hard in school, they've gone, some have gone to universities, some have gone to law school, some have become company executives.
They have become a vital piece of our melting pot and of our workforce.
Should dreamers be deported from the only country they've ever known?
Are they fair game?
or is that a step too far?

Second generation, I think they're called and they have they said with active noise cancellation.

Now look, I've worn noise canceling headphones before.
And they're awesome.
You know, I've got them.
You can wear them on an airplane.
And yeah, that noise, you know, it does a really good job of drowning them out.
I really didn't think that was possible in like something that you would stick in your ear.
But I'm telling you, I put those things on, I fired up the lawn tractor, the noise cancellation kicked in.
And it was, I had to take them out once to make sure the lawn tractor was actually on.
Wow.
That's, that's the technology in these things nowadays.
As I'm mowing the lawn, I'm hearing song lyrics.
You know, you've heard a song a million times and you think the lyric is one way.
Yeah.
And I hear, I hear, oh, it's that, it's that word instead of that word.
I'm like, wait, I'm hearing this while I'm mowing the lawn.
This is insane.
Oh my
Know I love the technology.
I'm not here to do a commercial for a particular product.
I'm here just to talk about the I love technology man
No, I wouldn't have either and yet so there there they are All right So that that was part of my escape from the news of the day But there is no escaping the news of the day because there's a lot that's important and a lot to to get done Not the least of which is a Wisconsin Supreme Court race that will be happening next April it'll be happening because Supreme Court justices there are seven of them in Wisconsin and they serve for 10 year terms so
seven out of every 10 years there's a Supreme Court race where one of the terms is up and we've got one of those happening next April with Justice Rebecca Bradley who was initially appointed by Scott Walker and then later won a 10-year term during Scott Walker's term in her own right which doesn't surprise you given what kind of a person Scott Walker was what kind of a governor he is and Rebecca Bradley has lived down to that and more and the Rebecca Bradley statement
about leaving the Supreme Court and deciding she was not going to run for re-election.
Well, she gave a statement to Whist Politics and it goes like this.
I'll try not to interrupt myself.
For years, Rebecca Bradley says, I have warned that under the control of judicial activists, the court will make itself more powerful than the legislature, more powerful than the governor.
That warning went unheeded and Wisconsin has seen only the beginning of what is an alarming shift from thoughtful, principled judicial service toward bitter partisanship,
personal attacks and political gamesmanship that have no place in court.
The conservative movement needs to take stock of its failures, identify the problem, and fix it.
Well, at least she's finally honest about not exactly being an unbiased justice when she says the conservative movement needs to take stock, identify problems, and fix things.
So I mean there she is telling you right from the get-go that she is uh well she's everything that she just described here the alarming shift toward bitter partisanship personal attacks and political gamesmanship that should be the title of her autobiography because she as much or more so than any of the other conservative justices who'd been on the court during the Scott Walker era had led the charge on that.
I've said repeatedly, her entire tenure on this court has been an audition for a basic cable TV show.
And maybe that's where she's going next.
All I know is she's going somewhere where she can continue on with the conservative movement and engage in this kind of projection as a way of life and get a paycheck for that of accusing people of the thing that you are so masterful at doing.
So
Appeals Court Judge Chris Taylor is the only announced candidate, and she was in a very good position to defeat and unseat Rebecca Bradley.
And we'll talk to Dan Schaefer in a couple of hours here about what the court could look like in the future, the court race, and one of the judges who may be the conservative candidate for a Supreme Court seat that's going to be up.
in the in April of next year, perhaps a February in primary, perhaps a primary in February, depending on who all gets in the race.

Also, actress Zendaya turned 29 yesterday.
Yesterday was the two-year anniversary of Jimmy Buffett passing away.
And another birthday from yesterday, rapper and TV co-host Chanel West Coast is 37 years old today.
I helped the old guy here for just a sec here, Parker.
So Chanel West Coast.
I only know her from Ridiculousness.
because we watched a lot of that during the pandemic when we were shut in.
But apparently, is she a rapper of some renowned or she just kind of has done that on the side?

And let's see, let's do another tune from yesterday.
Yesterday marked the anniversary of Hall of Notes releasing the Private Eyes album, which contained two number one hits, the title track and this one.
And yesterday, September 1st,
I can't believe we didn't get to do this on the first, but yesterday was 90125 day 90125 and of course only those of us from the early MTV generation Will know that that was the album the name of the album from the super group.
Yes And so it had tunes like leave it and
owner of a lonely heart and several other mega hits.
I play I wore that record out.
Really?
Yes 90125 planed it on the college radio station WUEC.
It's back in the day 89.7 FM which is now just all educational and news but it was it was a fun jukebox for us kids back in the day.
So that was Monday's history notes.
I've got some from Sunday here Sunday was a big birthday 80th birthday for singer Van Morrison.
There
was also a birthday on Sunday for Glen Tillbrook, the lead singer of Squeeze, 68 years old.
And now here's the one.
I feel like maybe we need a sound effect or something.
There's always one birthday that hits kind of the younger folks, if you will, and hits them right in the field.
Debbie Gibson, 55 years old today.
to a teen wonder back in the day.
From Sunday as well, Fleetwood Mac on this day in 1982 kicked off a concert tour in Atlanta for their new album, Mirage.
One of the tunes off Mirage as they did that tour.
They're opening act back in 1982 on this tour.
A new group folks hadn't heard of yet called
Men at Work.
But their debut album, Business as Usual, was starting to race up the chart and that band from Australia started with the hit Down Under and then others, they were touring as headliners by the time the Fleetwood Mac tour was coming to an end.
Also speaking of Fleetwood Mac, one of their original guitarists, Bob Welch.
turns 80 years old today.
In their early years, he was with Fleetwood Mac, but then had some solo hits of his own, including Ebony Eyes and Sentimental Lady.

Let me get back to the here and now from today's history lesson.
It was on this day in 1989 that the number one song belonged to Paula Abdul.

Yeah, I'll take it.
This is better breakfast month.

What's one thing you're going to do to have a better breakfast for me, for example, today?

roasted, cut a tomato in half and roasted the tomato halves in the air fryer with a little bit of seasoning on top.
Good idea.
And I got high marks from Sherry from that.

So I don't know.
When you're not rushed at three in the morning getting ready for a radio show, what's your go to breakfast?
That's usually the deal.
Oh, no.
Boy, I'm not a big breakfast guy, Pat.
I'm trying to remember, like, the last time I, like, made a breakfast or had went out for breakfast.
I really don't remember.
Wow, okay.
I've never been... My stomach has never loved, like, eating early in the morning.
I think that's part of it, so... Okay, okay.
I'm just... I'm
all about breakfast.
That's fair.

Well, then this is sourdough September.
So, you know, if if if nothing else, some sourdough toast, maybe.
Yeah, sure.
Would would be nice.
I'm a big bread guy.
Give me some bread.
Oh, hey, look, I am.
I love sourdough.
And it's one of those things where you know how some people like become addicted, like Taylor Swift was talking a couple weeks back like that's her new addiction is making sourdough bread.
I'm not going to start that for much the same reason that I don't gamble or do cocaine.
I'm afraid.
I am.
I fear addiction.
I truly do.
It's like, because nobody knows.
I'm like, you're going to go into this and go, I'm going to become addicted to it.
I want to.
It's like, you don't know.
And so that's how I am with sourdough.
I'm like, I'm not going to start.
Otherwise, I'm going to be making sourdough every
It's a very level addiction.
World War II.
I mean, there is a chance that I engage in a little hyperbole that way.
I'm not going to lie.
Back to Better Breakfast from Luke Mathers.
Biscuits and gravy all day, every day.
Oh, yeah.
Yep.
Sherry would go for that.
If it's not the roasted tomatoes, it's biscuits and gravy.
Love the biscuits and gravy.
So I will do French
I have some leftover French toast from the hotel we are at this weekend, one of the grandkids couldn't eat all of them.
And they were brioche bread, cinnamon swirl.
made into French toast and they, however they may, they caramelized the sugar so perfectly on this French toast that I have it, not that it's going to taste better necessarily.
I want to break it down scientifically.
And I want to figure out how I can make French toast like that.
We're going to reverse engineer this toast.
Yes, I'm going to reverse engineer the brioche cinnamon swirl.
French toast.
Okay, so that that was sourdough September.
And I got one more.
It's National Condiment Month.
So safe eating with National Condiment Month.
Wait,
just
oh yes craft Heinz which was this big mega merger like a decade ago has now announced that they're splitting up yeah because these these mergers and then these breakups always done for the same reason how can we make money off of this is true exactly what they're doing so yeah craft craft and Heinz so I mean look the
condiments are still going to be there.
Don't get me wrong.
Oh, yeah.
They'll be under a different kind of umbrella here.
The story that I'm looking at here from Yahoo Finance says Kraft Heinz is splitting into two companies a decade after they joined in a massive merger that created one of the biggest food companies on the planet.
One of the companies will be called Global Taste Elevation Company.
What?
Global Taste Elevation Company, okay?
We'll
include some shelf-stable meals and brands like Heinz, Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Kraft Mac & Cheese.
The other company will be called North American Grocery Company, and we'll include Oscar Mayer, Kraft Singles, Lunchables, etc.
And again, I don't get you.
First, you thought it was great to merge and get all these things together, and now you're saying it's not such a good idea.
I don't know.
I don't
as they
Yeah, I mean, you now look at the condiment shelf.
It used to be here's your Heinz ketchup.
Here's your French is mustard.
And that was it.
It was a very tiny shelf.
You ever notice how big the condiment shelves have gotten in the grocery store now?
It's a very big one.
There's every kind of variety.
And take for example,
I like ketchup, but I like my ketchup with a little bit of a kick.
So I would add like a little chalupa hot sauce to it.
Just a little bit.
Just to take it up.
Now there's so many variations on that theme alone.
And everything else that goes along with it.
Alicia says if you're ever in Kimberly for breakfast, you have to eat at chef O's.
Their cinnamon swirl French toast is amazing.
So color me intrigued.
So
We're going to we're going to do that.

He took them across the country while Congress was in recess.

But coming back to La Crosse there, that's where Vice President JD Vance spent some time on Friday engaged in fear and eluding.
I'm sorry, that was Thursday, wasn't it?
Yeah, it's a long weekend.
They all start to run together here.
But yeah, there was a an appearance at a metal fabrication plant.
And he started by talking about manufacturing.
And I always get a hoot out of this where they engage in this, oh, people think that manufacturing is just all dirty and beneath them.
And manufacturing is the future.
It's clean.
It's high-tech.
It's like, we know.
We know.
We know you love engaging in these stereotypes to try to make a point.
But the vice president's speech was just one walking stereotype after another.
Most of it involved, you know fearing the immigrants fear fear the immigrants there there was the usual Pleasantries there was the propping up of congressman Derek van Orden calling him the hardest working man in Congress Maybe hardest working on Twitter, but you know, I think most people understood that those were just empty platitudes and Then he started to talk about American manufacturing and one of his lines.
I'm not gonna play the audio.
I'm sorry you
You don't deserve that.
I'll rattle off the things that he said without having necessarily make you wince.
Okay.
There was this line.
Thanks to a generation of failed politicians and stupid decisions, those factories closed down one by one by one.
Yeah, dude.
It was you guys.
It was the guys taking care of Wall Street that said, Yep, these corporations want to ship jobs overseas and that's going to save money.
Well, we're all in.
And now, of course, decades later, now they're pretending to care about outsourced manufacturing.
So how are they doing this?
Well, of course, through trade wars.
So we had this line.
If you build crap overseas and try to undercut the wages of American workers, you're going to pay a big fat tariff before you bring it back here into the United States of America, end quote.
Okay, sure.
But again, an iPhone is not going to get built here.
And if it is, it's going to cost $10,000.
OK, maybe not $10,000, but definitely $3,000, $4,000.
If you can find people who are going to build it here, again, it was done for cost savings.
If you want to have it done here, you got to wonder in this time of worker shortage, who's going to do that and then who's going to buy the phones?
He then talked about taxes on tips and overtime and how their big mega bill addresses, you know, ending taxes on tips and overtime.
But again, read the fine print.
In the bill, you'll see a lot of folks will not be helped by these rules about eliminating taxes on tips and overtime because folks either don't make enough to qualify for the tax credit.
Again, remember, a tax credit, you know, it comes on the taxes you pay, but if you already make so little.
that you're not paying taxes, tax credit ain't going to help you.
And then we went into the fear portion.
And I'm going to read several lines here, even though they're rather redundant, because I kept waiting for him to get to the next point.
And he didn't.
And it went like this.
First off, we've got the
Why is it that we allow these Mexican drug cartels to bring this poisonous fentanyl into our communities?
Why is it that so many people lost hope and started taking that fentanyl?
Why is it that we had a government that seemed to care more about illegal immigrants than they did about their own citizens?
Well, I don't know, Mr. Vice President.
I do know we have leaders who can't help talking about illegal immigrants, as you love to call them, and doing very little about your own citizens.
But it was always kept coming back to the the fear factor Here's this line Donald Trump's Republican Party wants very simple things for this country We want you to be able to earn a good living in your community We want you to be able to walk down a city street in broad daylight without getting mugged We want you to be able to take your family out to a nice meal Wherever you want to without the fear of violence from criminals whether they're domestic criminals or international drug cartels What
Folks in La Crosse, you're listening right now, are the streets of La Crosse known for their international drug cartels as well as domestic criminals?
Are you not able to take your family out to a nice meal wherever you want to go?
Because I've spent many an evening in La Crosse and I'm not aware international drug cartels are a thing except as a fear factor in a politician's speech.
He goes on and again, the broad brush painting Democrats, they're going to tell you they oppose the Trump mega bill not because they want to raise your taxes and they do, but because they're worried about your healthcare.
They're so worried about your healthcare.
In fact, that they want to give more and more of your healthcare to illegal immigrants.
And then speaking to high school seniors in the crowd, he says, I'll give you a little bit of relationship advice.
Find yourself somebody who loves you as much as national Democrats love giving healthcare benefits to illegal aliens.
And then he comes to, this legislation guarantees that hardworking Americans are going to be able to access their social security, Medicare and Medicaid benefits.
What this bill refuses to do is give your hard earned benefits to people who don't have the legal right to be in this country to begin with.
And on and on, it went paragraph after paragraph with just a broken record about people, undocumented workers, who pay into the system, but who do not get benefits from it.
because they're undocumented.
And our system's gonna suffer in a big way if all of that goes away, but we still have to somehow pay for benefits.
