I wanted to talk about this, and I saw an opinion letter in the Milwaukee Journal sent about this to something that we've been meaning to get to about our libraries.
And this segment, we're going to love on our libraries.
Yes.
So we would love to hear from you about how often you use your local library, what it means to you.
Do you do other, I mean, do you more than books?
Yes.
What does your library do for you?
My gosh, I mean, that's the thing is, I think a lot of people don't know that what, I mean, yes, books, audio books, but some libraries, they have like tools, they have other
Items you can low it can be loaned out.
I mean libraries are so So essential and unfortunately under attack.
Yeah, now they're under attack.
This is from wired the doge acts Comes for libraries and museums the Institute of Museum and Library Services has long gotten bipartisan support But after years of trying Donald Trump now has tried to crush it Trump administration working along with doge
gutting the agency that provides funding to libraries and museums across the country.
These cuts threaten student field trips, classes for seniors, access to digital services like Libby, which Utah have talked about in the past.
You love the Libby app.
The
Libby app is wonderful.
And we'll talk about that a little bit more if you're interested about how you can utilize.
If you can't get to the library, you can use that.
But yeah, it's... Here's the thing I don't understand, Jane.
And I don't understand a lot.
You just said this had bipartisan support.
For years.
For years people saw this as a tool for the community, a good for everyone who walks through those doors who just wants to read, get some quiet time, do some studying.
I want to know what Donald Trump, a.k.a.
the felon president and Doge see that's so sinister behind the doors of libraries.
and museums.
What is the thing that you see that we haven't seen for years that's so bad for America?
Well, I think for one thing is that libraries can stock what they want.
And that can be dangerous?
Yes.
To them.
Yes.
To them?
Yes, dangerous to them.
Yes, of course.
I would imagine, and I'm speculating here, but I would imagine that that is part of it.
Knowledge is dangerous.
We don't want the people to be informed.
Too educated.
Your populace is too educated.
Then they can come back with arguments against you.
And I don't know that we want that.
Now there is a lawsuit.
Union and the association representing museum and library workers are now suing the Trump administration.
the American Library Association and the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees suing to block the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
So we'll see what happens with this and how it works its way through the courts and where it ends up.
But for right now, this is a concern.
I love my local library.
I use, I go to my library at least once every two weeks.
That's amazing.
I mean, I go to our library, like we said before, so I use something called the Libby app.
I am a person who takes in all books audio-wise.
That's how I read.
And so I use the Libby app.
I have Audible, but I love the Libby app because it's free.
You download the Libby app, you connect it to your local library or your local consortium of libraries, and then you have access.
And it's not just audiobooks, you can get ebooks too.
to hundreds of thousands of titles for nothing, for nothing.
You don't have to.
And they have wonderful ways to reserve, to renew or to return early.
It's all there at the fingertips.
I love Libby so much.
And if it gets, if there, if, if something affects that app, it's going to be affecting people who may not be able to have transportation
to the
library.

Like I said, it is absolutely free and it is wonderful.
But, you know,
That's the thing is you go every two weeks Well, I go to the library to drop off shredding because like they have a partnership with a local company that every few months They'll be like free shredding today, and it's always at the library.

We are spending this time loving on our local libraries because they need it right now.
This is the letter to the editor that I found in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Federal government spends millions on libraries.
The executive order ends that.
Here's the letter I grew up in libraries.
I spent every weekends at my local library reading, checking out books and movies.
The library fostered in me a love of knowledge and learning before I ever stepped foot into a classroom.
As an adult, the library remains for me a sacred space.
I've saved hundreds of on books by borrowing.
The library's audio books keep me sane on long drives.
I've had access to magazines I wouldn't otherwise read.
I've used the free language learning resources to help me learn my partner's native tongue, Meng.
President Trump has now put these wonderful spaces at risk by ordering the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
This agency provided millions in funding last year, which supports the workforce, technology upgrades, summer reading programs.
We hear so much about how our kids can't read.
This is a wonderful.
free resource, interlibrary loans that allow smaller libraries to get books from the bigger systems.
Important services are going to be cut under this.
Children and elderly populations that rely on library services may no longer have access to it.
Trump's order is devastating to anyone who cares not only about reading and the provision of services to those who need it most, but to anyone who cares about a future
where knowledge and broad horizons are valued.

And we're getting wonderful comments already on the text lines.
Allison Cudahay listening on WFHR says, I use my library every week for books, periodicals, and to attend community events, my crochet club, to take my grand-nephew to, that's adorable, my grand-nephew for reading and playtime, for concerts to view local artists work.
They have art shows and craft shows.
and to use computers and copy machines, rentals.
I mean, like-
The list goes on and on and
on.
And so we'll read other comments too.
And this is, I'm loving the love for the libraries.
So, okay, this is what we know so far.
It's bipartisan measures supported for years and years and years.
For some reason, Doge and Trump want to knock it down.
I think it's because if school boards can censor their own libraries, which they have been doing for years now, banning books that are not-
a problem.
Now they need a bigger fist to punch through a problem they have with all these books.
So all these wonderful things we're hearing about, this is a tactic that is just mean and unnecessary.
I mean, this is absolutely like you, you like this.
You love those flowers.
I'm going to step on them just because I want to.
Why are you getting rid of?
Why are you defunding libraries?
This is makes no once again, chaos, no sense.

The library is an essential part of our community.
So many different programs that help our kids like Read to a Dog.
I've never heard of that.

For kids who have problems reading?
Okay, I'm gonna start to tear up.

Seriously, oh, there are videos of it that will rip your heart out.
So for kids who have trouble reading, they bring in a shelter dog and they can read to the dog.
And it instills confidence because there's no judgment from the dog, right?
Yeah, it's a wonderful, wonderful thing.

The director and the staff were incredible, providing a whole variety of services to our city.
They thoroughly researched and identified the needs of our constituents.
I am so proud of what they accomplished.
This reminds me of the conversation we had yesterday with the nurses who are seeking a union.
You work in a library, you become a library, which by the way, is a agreed.
Title not everybody who works in a library is a librarian right you do a lot of work and to say to yourself I want to spend a lot of money to get educated to become a librarian That means you have a commitment to the community because you want to see people grow and be better That is laudable and in my opinion.
Let's give them more money

with the libraries if the main library doesn't have a book that you want to check out they have an inventory of all the books at all of their branches and they will bring that book into the library and then they'll call you so that you can go and check it out and another thing with the libraries the adult reference desk I've used that many many times
And they are so courteous and so helpful, you know, you're inquiring about one thing or another.
And then one last thing on a previous show, Jane, you were looking for suggestions to refer to your listeners in name for your listeners.

I had just graduated from Lakeland College with a bachelor's in business administration and accounting.
I took my children to the Milwaukee central library.
I paged through their government job offerings, applied for a position with the city and landed a position that resulted in a 30 plus year career in economic development in many municipalities.
That right there.
shows you the importance of libraries, not to mention all the other texts we're getting right now.

I keep hearing that comment from people that call up on civic media.

and it just made me wonder in homes across Wisconsin, especially with Wisconsin nice What are your what is your over under is it actually toilet paper or is it maybe leaving lights on versus not?

Now I know for a fact that my sister and her daughter, my niece, I'm not sure where they fall on the over under, but they are opposites.
So when my niece comes over to her mother's house, she will switch the toilet paper to be the way that she wants it.
I'm not saying I am for or against that practice.

not saying whether I can neither confirm nor deny that I've done the same thing.
I will say that an hour ago when we talked about this Mike from Green Bay texted over and

As far as I'm concerned, there's no wrong answer.
My whole thing was just, just replace the toilet paper roll.

And I realized like half an hour later, I forgot.

If you go to push down on the roll, nothing happens if it's under.

No, also, but if you give the toilet paper a yank, it's going to keep just going, whereas when it's over, there's some control, science, physics.
I'm not a physicist, but I'm just saying those words to make myself seem smarter.
