We've had a couple...

alterations.

Greg Bach (contributor)

Just a

Jane Matinair (host)

few.

Just a couple of things.

We've had to move around on the show today, some conflicts and other things.

It's all good.

Yeah.

And we still have a really busy show coming up for you today.

Andrea Watkins is going to be back on the show.

She is a New York Times bestselling author, and she also has a terrific sub-stack that we will talk about.

And she grew up in a Christian nationalist household.

So she has very interesting perspectives.

particularly when it comes to Project 2025 and how that plays into what is currently happening under the Trump administration.

So all we're hearing now about Medicaid and the cuts to Medicaid is the dignity of work.

We're going to give people the dignity of work.

Andrea has an interesting perspective.

on that take on it.

So we're going to talk about that with her coming up after the 9.30 news.

In hour number two, after 10 o'clock, we promised to talk about this.

The IRS has decided that it's fine for preachers to preach politics from the pulpit, even though, you know, they're exempt from the IRS and all that stuff.

We would love to know how you feel about that.

Yes.

And is that just a free speech issue?

Is that not a problem?

Or should they have their text exam status revoked?

Greg Bach (contributor)

And I know we have a lot of people who are identified as religious Christians who listen to the show.

We'd love to know yeah, we would love

Jane Matinair (host)

to know please absolutely that will be right after the 10 o'clock news Britney Merleau will be here with weather and wine find out what's gonna go on today Into the weekend and what is coming up as far as the weather goes at 1035 JR Radcliffe we had to reschedule JR But we're still gonna do an audio survey related to the Brewers darn right Good news yesterday

Greg Bach (contributor)

darn right get that broom

Jane Matinair (host)

out

So we're going to talk some favorite Brewer's memories coming up after 1030.

And then we'll wrap up the show as we always do with this shouldn't be a thing.

Today it's the Macho Macho Man.

And you got it.

Macho Macho Man edition.

So stick around for that.

That's coming up around 1051-ish.

Just a reminder as well, we are going on the road, baby.

Oh yeah.

Next week, Matt and Aaron here in the Todd Alba Show.

Hitting the road, we will be stopping in Oshkosh next Wednesday.

On Thursday, we will be in Butternut.

And on Friday, we will be in Hayward, Wisconsin, where to talk about the EAA air venture, which is coming up.

Packers training camp is going on.

We're going to learn about...

the history of Butternut and other small towns in Wisconsin.

I'm so excited about going to Butternut.

I am.

I know you are.

This is my new favorite place

Greg Bach (contributor)

I've never been.

I just can't wait to see what the next place will be, James.

favorite place she's never

Jane Matinair (host)

been.

Never been yet.

So we'll be in Butternut on Thursday and then Friday in Hayward.

It's going to be a lot of fun.

Hopefully you'll be able to come out and join us.

Our special road trip additions, Natanair on air and Todd Alba.

We hit the road next week, next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Greg Bach (contributor)

If you've got suggestions of places to go, restaurants, cafes, little stores along that route.

Ice cream.

Ice cream.

Just saying.

Send that information to Jane says at civicmedia.us.

You can send it just, you know, just, it doesn't have to be anything crazy.

Just, you know, a few, a few suggestions.

Jane Matinair (host)

Here's a great place for pizza.

Here's a great place for Chris.

Scones.

Scones of peace.

Scones of peace.

That's a throwback.

We would love, yeah, we'd love your suggestions.

Yeah.

Greg Bach (contributor)

Yeah,

Jane Matinair (host)

if you live in Oshkosh or Hayward or Butternut or Park Falls or along that route.

Yeah, along that stretch because you're going to be traveling.

It's kind of a long haul between Oshkosh and Butternut.

Yeah, it's about a three and a half hour drive.

So yeah, we'll have plenty of time to make some stops.

along the way, especially if there would be like ice cream.

Greg Bach (contributor)

Also, at all of our advanced ages, there'll be a lot of stouches.

I gotta go to the bathroom.

Jane Matinair (host)

Yeah, there'll be that too, probably.

That is all next week.

I hope you can join us.

Did want to start off with this, though, from the Milwaukee Journal.

Sentinel Lawrence Andrea has the byline.

Elon Musk, Donald Trump blow up, makes waves with Wisconsin Republicans.

Does it really really really really the fallout between Trump and Elon Musk over the big blob of a bill?

Has made its way into Wisconsin according to this article US senator Ron Johnson this week called Elon's proposal to create a third political party the America Party Counterproductive ah yes, of course counterproductive this would most likely hurt Republicans and

Wisconsin's own Derek Van Orden has appeared to try to call Musk's bluff after Elon threatened to unseat every Republican who voted for this blob of a bill.

And Orden responded last month to a tweet by saying, bring it on, essentially.

Okay, that's fine.

Yeah, I mean, they all loved him.

They loved him.

They loved him like a month and a half ago.

Leading up to the election.

Greg Bach (contributor)

The April

Jane Matinair (host)

1 election.

April 1 election.

Here in Wisconsin.

They loved him.

He could

Greg Bach (contributor)

do no wrong.

This man full of ketamine and hope really just, with his chainsaw and his weird hats, came into the game and people just saw, they so desperately wanted a Tony Stark character.

And he's been pushing that narrative for so long.

Jane Matinair (host)

I'd love to be Tony Stark.

The

Greg Bach (contributor)

only problem is, is that Tony Stark is what I wrote it down here.

He's a

Jane Matinair (host)

hero?

Greg Bach (contributor)

Tony Stark is two things.

First of all, he's not real.

And in the comic books, he is smart.

So really, when it comes down to it, like, Elon Musk from two years ago, I understand why people would view him as this, you know, super genius.

Creator blah blah blah, but over the past I would say year we've really seen the true and and really by his own design, too He's from from financing Twitter because he didn't buy it with his money.

He financed it through other people, right?

and really turning that place into a cesspool and the stuff with Grock coming out this week.

This last week has been just crazy.

So really like we're just seeing that we're seeing his true colors.

But what's funny is that his true colors, in my opinion, match the mega colors too.

And so the fact that there is fighting is funny.

It just goes to show it's all about ego because

They I don't I don't want to say they essentially agree on everything, but they're both sides of this coin are equally Unhinged yes and based in in in false narratives and their own grandiosity their own grandiosity But because they have two two separate leaders they can't there can only be one there can only be one

the mega people were only going to allow Elon in as much as as close.

I mean, like they were calling him a shadow president.

This was not, I didn't make this up.

This has been in all sorts of media, but that's as far as he could ever get.

The moment he started taking the spotlight and when April one hit and Susan Crawford won by a lot, that stained his look immediately.

Don't forget to Brad Schimmel ultimately lost by double digits.

I think it was 11 points.

Yeah, got smoked.

And it was another just like Janet Pertis say, which is election two, three.

Oh my God, three years ago.

Right.

Who knows times of construct.

It is.

No, it was two years ago.

It was 2023.

It was decided and announced and over with like within the hour.

Jane Matinair (host)

Oh, the election?

The results came in so quickly because it was so overwhelming.

Greg Bach (contributor)

Yeah, this was not.

And Elon Musk, along with the usual Wisconsin Republican suspects of fundraisers, gave so much money to a state supreme court race, and they lost.

And they lost.

And that is what started to tarnish the...

Jane Matinair (host)

The golden boy.

Yeah, he was the golden boy of everything.

So now they're knocking along.

Well, Senator Ron Johnson says, unfortunately, if Elon does form a third party, it will split fiscal conservatives and probably help Democrats who have no fiscal control, wait, or any desire to reduce the deficit.

This is from Wisconsin.

Senior Senator Ron.

Johnson.

Democrats have no fiscal control or any desire to reduce the deficit.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You probably aren't.

Ron Johnson voted for this big blob of a bill which essentially increases the deficit.

What, is it three trillion?

Three to four trillion dollars.

Three to four trillion

Greg Bach (contributor)

dollars.

Conservatively.

That's a conservative number they're giving it.

Yeah.

And he also voted for the

previous bill under Trump, which increased the deficit.

Yes.

Jane Matinair (host)

But they make the tax cuts for wealthy people permanent.

Greg Bach (contributor)

I would also love to meet all of these fiscal conservatives, he speaks of, because that was also a narrative they got to push years ago.

We're fiscally conservative.

No, you're not.

You're not.

You never have been.

You love spending money.

You just don't like spending certain monies.

And

Jane Matinair (host)

you love

Greg Bach (contributor)

keeping your money, right?

They don't like spending money on

Jane Matinair (host)

certain

Greg Bach (contributor)

things and there's an argument to be made and we can go I would rather get into it with an expert and I was because I heard this in a news article about the fact that fiscal conservative and this might upset this might upset some some Democrats listening to but I don't care

Fiscal conservative is just a racist dog whistle because when we talk about fiscal conservatism, we talk about the notion of being good with America's money and that always hampers social programs.

When we talk about fiscal conservatism, fiscal conservatism, we never put things like the military in serious discussion.

There's never a talk about cutting military spending.

Ever.

Ever.

It's always

the programs, the Medicaid's, the Medicare's, the SNAP's, you know, a program that provides money for farmers to give money to food, to food banks.

It's never say, Hey, you know, and this is, I'm not making it to fund the police statement here, but I'm simply saying we're never talking about maybe, maybe a small, maybe a small city in America doesn't need a tank because we're fiscal conservatives.

Jane Matinair (host)

Well, and I go back to.

Now I completely lost my terrain of thought.

I apologize.

That's okay But yeah, yeah, the whole oh the Defense Department.

Yes The Defense Department, which again is getting a huge boost in this budget bill.

Yeah has not Been able to pass an audit.

I believe it's for the last decade.

Greg Bach (contributor)

Yeah

Jane Matinair (host)

the last 10 years They're all about everybody other agencies, especially social agencies like snap and all of those things being accountable

For all of their money and all of their expenditures, but when it comes to the DoD, apparently it's like, yeah, let's give them more money.

It's fine.

They just, you know, they forgot to carry the one.

Greg Bach (contributor)

Yeah, absolutely.

And it's always the IRS and the EPA and the Department of Education.

These are all departments and sections of the government which pose threats to the GOP supremacy, the IRS.

I mean, how much money did they make back?

When we increase the number of agents who are auditing wealthy people, didn't we pull in a billion dollars

Jane Matinair (host)

under

Greg Bach (contributor)

that?

About that.

We're looking at education.

They hate public education.

They want to get rid of that.

They want to get rid of the IRS.

They want to get rid of the EPA, my God, of course.

Of course they hate the EPA.

It's always cuts though those programs which threaten them or never cutting DoD money.

And honestly, I'm not even making the claim to say we need to cut the DoT at this point.

I don't have the figures.

I'm just saying it needs to be a serious part of the conversation if you want to call yourself truly fiscally conservative.

Jane Matinair (host)

Well, you can always go back to Dick Cheney's quote who said at one point, deficits don't matter.

Dick Cheney said that.

Coming up, not only can he roll logs, he can head NASA.

A new job for Wisconsin's own Sean Duffy.

That's coming up.

Stay close.

You're listening to Matt Nair on air on the Civic Media Radio Network.

Fly me.

Jane Matinair

Good morning and welcome back to Matinair on Air.

Jane Matinair, Greg Bach, Dr. Slide, bringing it.

Coming to you live from our studio here at Radio Park in Racine, you can always join us.

Call or text at 855-752-4842.

You can also leave a comment if you're watching on the live stream on Facebook, YouTube, and what used to be Twitter.

Just want to remind you that

Civic Media, we do have stations all across the state.

I

Greg Bach

think we're

Jane Matinair

up to, what, 26 now?

Greg Bach

Yeah,

Jane Matinair

thanks.

And a whole bunch of our stations are music stations.

Yes.

So if you got the Civic Media app, which you should, because it's absolutely free, you can listen to any one of our music stations.

If you're going for a walk or you're going for a bike ride or whatever you're doing, take us with you.

You can check out 105.7 WCFW in Eau Claire.

What's up, Eau Claire?

98Q country in Park Falls, catch some country music.

And of course, WRJN right across the hall from us here, the best of the oldies.

They're fantastic.

Dr. Slide

Do you know what I love about that, Jane?

What's that?

Is that it's the best of the oldies and I'm hearing songs from like the 70s on there.

Jane Matinair

It's because we're old now.

Yeah.

Yeah.

You're old.

Yes, just me.

That's true.

But yes, please download the Civic Media app and check out our music stations.

Absolutely.

Greg Bach

And again,

Jane Matinair

when you go for a walk or you just want to check out something different, that's another way to help support Civic Media.

We really appreciate it.

Wanted to spend a little time about this.

Donald Trump has named US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy now as Interim.

NASA administrator.

Just as a reminder, in his first administration, I don't think he had anything but actings or interim.

Dr. Slide

So in the beginning of his first term, he had, he went through the process of confirming.

Jane Matinair

He

Dr. Slide

did that for this one too.

It's a much different cast of characters.

Because he was doing it in the old way.

I would not the old way the traditional more Acceptable way because he had surround he had surrounding him While they weren't all experts in their field Rex Tillerson They were people who were seen as guardrails to Trump people who would tell him no exactly or at least point out where he was wrong and people who if they left wouldn't talk smack about him Rex Tillerson and

Somewhere around middle of that first term, he just made everyone acting because that way he could just fire them outright.

Jane Matinair

And put in whoever he wanted.

Dr. Slide

He didn't have to go through certain confirmations.

He can make acting and fire and replace and rehire and blah, blah, blah.

And it made it so he could control that flow, essentially.

Jane Matinair

Well, and again, he wants to surround himself with loyalists.

Dr. Slide

Oh my, yeah.

And that is what has happened now because he went through the confirmation process in his second term, but everybody

Everyone who went through there.

I don't know if there was a single person who was getting confirmed through those first few weeks So people weren't outraged at even though some Democrats even voted for them But that's not the point the point is is that he is I'm wondering if he's gonna do that again because you know depending on the scuttle you hear Pete Hexeth it always seems like he's on his way out, but

Will he put in place an actual head of NASA?

I don't know, but this is transportation rockets get you places

Jane Matinair

Rockets go places.

Yes.

I see I think that the whole goal is to Like every other head of every other agency is to dismantle the agency and so Duffy can take apart NASA.

I think probably just as well as anybody else

Dr. Slide

Yeah, absolutely

Jane Matinair

because it's not there to build up the program or support the program It's about it's about breaking it up

Dr. Slide

and every and and every other president

has, well, let me rephrase that.

It's been the goal, it should be the goal of every other president to appoint secretaries who can run their departments independent of the executive branch to make those decisions, especially in terms of like the DOJ, whether or not they, you know, they make the decision to go after certain people and stand up to the president if they're doing something that's a little nefarious or unconstitutional.

But that's not what we're having, every single decision you talk, you listen to any secretary.

Brooke Rollins yesterday, we played a clip from her.

It's not just about the policies they set forth.

It's about praising the guy in the

Jane Matinair

White

Dr. Slide

House to say,

Jane Matinair

this is what we're doing.

And this is the best thing that has ever been done.

Absolutely.

By any administration ever.

Dr. Slide

In fact, I don't even think George Washington was ever president.

I think it was just.

previous Donald Trump.

He's been our president for 249 years.

Jane Matinair

John Duffy responding to his announcement on social media.

I am honored to accept this mission.

Time to take over space.

Let's launch flag emoji airplane emoji.

Dr. Slide

Airplane

Jane Matinair

emoji.

Yeah.

And then there's a spaceship at the beginning or a rocket.

Sorry.

He's probably thinks space is due

Dr. Slide

to it.

Yeah, I mean what's honestly, what's he gonna do like he's gonna he'll get another briefing in the day and then I mean really when it comes down to it and I'd like to I'd like to delve into it deeper on another show but the amount of money that Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk got for their little man-boy space mission companies I just feel like they're what they're gonna eventually do is just divert

Jane Matinair

NASA

Dr. Slide

privatize it privatize it divert to those two and That's it and we could then get to see those two fight.

It's another doge.

Remember

Zaki, or all Vivek.

Vivek and Elon were going to run Doge together,

Jane Matinair

and that was

Dr. Slide

laughable.

Yeah, I think that's, these are just the plans.

You dismantle them, and

Jane Matinair

you give them away.

And privatize them.

Yeah.

Gene from Mugler is on the line.

Good morning, Gene.

Real quickly, we're just up against the wall here.

What did you want to say?

Greg Bach

pinch myself to see if I still have a bad dream or a nightmare or something, you know, like incompetency equals deterioration of all the programs that he's put in it.

And thanks guys for the information.

You have a good day.

You as

Jane Matinair

well.

Gene,

Greg Bach

thank you so

Jane Matinair

much.

We were going to have Jim Santel on.

We had some rescheduling things that we had to do.

We will talk about this next week.

The Supreme Court has essentially given Donald Trump now the OK to go ahead and get rid of low level, mid level federal workers.

and replace them with loyalists, because that's what this is about.

It's not about competency.

It's not about the best people for the job.

It's about the best people who will do everything that he wants, essentially.

I said this for a long time.

It's going to be a government full of your least competent cousins.

Dr. Slide

Jane, it's like we almost talked about this a lot last year about Project 2025 with Andrew Watkins

Jane Matinair

who's coming up next.

Dr. Slide

She

Jane Matinair

is New York Times best-selling author, Andrew Watkins, on the other side going to talk about

the Christian Nationalist embrace of the dignity of work.

That's all on the way.

Stay with us.

You're listening to Matt Nair on air on the vast statewide, countrywide global on the app, Civic Media Radio Network.

Jane Matt and Air

Good morning and welcome, welcome to Matt and Air on Air.

Jane Matt and Air, Greg Bach and Dr. Slide on the Board, coming to you live from our studio at Radio Park in Racine.

You can always join us, call or text.

The number is the same 855-752-4842.

You can also leave a comment if you're watching on the live stream on Facebook, YouTube, and what used to be Twitter.

We are waiting to be joined by New York Times bestselling author, Andra Watkins.

She has been on the show numerous times in the past few months.

She was really one of the early people taking a real close look at Project

2025.

She grew up in a Christian nationalist household.

If you know anything about some of the authors about Project 2025, they are also very deeply embedded within that Christian nationalist movement.

And there are many things within Project 2025 that are essentially goals of the Christian nationalist movement.

So again, we're trying to waiting to connect with Andrew Watkins.

New York Times best-selling author.

She also has a great sub-stack as well that you can check out.

We'll put a link in our show notes at Jane says at civicmedia.us J-A-N-E-S-A-Y-S Jane says at civicmedia.us

Greg Bach

I think one of the things we can talk about while we wait for her to get here is just the fact that you know we We have been talking is this this is July of 2025.

I feel like at this point we

We had been talking about Project 2025 for nearly a year.

When it was published, it came out and we would discuss it between you and I. And then we had Andrew on and gave a deeper idea of who, of what this document was about.

But it was really frustrating to see it be.

I want to say ignored, but it wasn't hitting the front page news until, until Taranjee P. Henson said something.

It

Jane Matt and Air

was an awards show.

Greg Bach

An awards ceremony.

And then everyone was like, oh, and then what happened was is once that document, I'm sorry, that tome, it's 900

Jane Matt and Air

pages.

It's almost a thousand pages along, you

Greg Bach

know.

Became something they couldn't deny anymore.

Then all of a sudden it was.

deny, deny, deny.

We don't know anything, but that's

Jane Matt and Air

never heard about it.

I've never heard of it before.

I

Greg Bach

never read it.

I don't know anything about this document.

And it lays in, it laid in those pages.

Everything they are doing now.

Yeah.

Everything.

Jane Matt and Air

To the, to the gutting of Noah.

Because in project 2025, Noah is responsible for helping to create the climate crisis.

Greg.

Greg Bach

Yes.

Oh, absolutely.

Not, not.

Decades and decades of

Jane Matt and Air

so they have to get rid of Noah and they want science to align with the outcome that they want So it's like here is your dear scientists.

Here's the result we would like So go backwards and make that make sense

Yeah, it's essentially what it does

Greg Bach

and that goes back to and I use the example I'm gonna keep using the example because it's one of the most ridiculous it goes back to when There was a hurricane that hit Florida and they were making their predictions and Donald Trump said this is what's gonna happen and he was wrong They showed they had a map printed out on a piece of cardboard and he took a Sharpie and he redrew the lines of the affected area and he thought that was fine that set off

pardon the pun, a firestorm of controversy because you can't do that.

But that's what he said, so that's what they wanted, so that's what they're gonna do now, is they're going to make all of the, I mean, and these scientists are gonna flee, because that's not what they, they

Jane Matt and Air

didn't- Well, they're not

Greg Bach

paid to do that,

Jane Matt and Air

no.

Greg Bach

They're not paid to do that, and they also didn't get, and that's the thing that, you know, that's the thing about the whole blaming science and activist scientists for climate change, is that,

I don't know of any scientists out there who are making billions of dollars.

Jane Matt and Air

I don't think you go into long-term research in order to get a Maserati.

Greg Bach

No, you do not.

It's like people who say teachers are takers.

None of them are driving Porsches based off of their public school salaries.

But these individuals not only got into weather sciences, but they decided to work for the government, serve publicly to help us.

And they're being told you're the problem.

They're going to go.

And either they're going to fill it with people who will do exactly what they're told, or they'll just shut it down completely, privatize it, and then you have to pay for your weather.

Jane Matt and Air

And that's, we've talked about that.

We talked to Corey Hartman here at Civic Media, who...

who is a storm chaser, and we've talked about the importance of NOAA, and we can talk about Texas and how that all plays in.

But we are, again, waiting to connect with New York Times best-selling author, Andrea Watkins.

She also has a sub-stack called For Such a Time as This, Decoding America 2025.

I highly encourage you to check it out.

And they talk about this.

What does the dignity of work really mean?

This is white Christian nationalist dogma.

being used to sell Americans who are on public assistance.

Russ Vote,

who is the

author of Project 2025, and again, comes from this Christian nationalist background, was on, of course, Fox, saying the social safety net has become a hammock.

Didn't Paul Ryan say that?

Or was that the trampoline?

I can't remember.

The social safety net has become a hammock in the last few years, and as a result,

Dependency has steeped in, we want to restore the dignity of work.

Okay.

Andrew Watkins says the dignity of work, dignity of work is a big, big deal in project 2025.

All about gutting social safety nets and the rise of for-profit industries like our now for-profit prisons.

All these camps.

That camp that there's that they set up in Florida.

What are they calling?

They're calling the alligator Alcatraz.

They're selling merch for it Because it's such a light-hearted thing that's a private prison company.

Yeah is my understanding

Greg Bach

Well, and also, you know, I mentioned it earlier before and we can and if we can find the clip Cal from yesterday of

Brooke Rollins talking about it taking all of these quote-unquote able-bodied workers And throwing them in the field because because I mean who doesn't love killing two birds with one stone We're gonna get rid of all of the undocumented workers and people in this country get rid of them all when they're gone.

They're gone.

They're gone.

They're gone There's nobody to pick our fruit pick our vegetables do the things that Americans don't want to do But we're gonna take all those people

that 30, say 35 million, 35 billion, 35, 35 or 36 million people on Medicare who are Medicaid, who are able body, throw them into the fields.

Because what they're assuming is that these people don't already have jobs.

They assume everybody who on Medicaid is, as you said, sitting in a hammock.

Yep.

sipping a cool drink.

Playing video games.

Jane Matt and Air

Playing video games.

They're

Greg Bach

big on that

Jane Matt and Air

now.

And

Greg Bach

just counting their money.

Jane Matt and Air

Yeah.

Greg Bach

Just, oh my gosh, a scam.

And for the millions of dollars they get from the government a year.

Jane Matt and Air

Yes.

Greg Bach

Isn't that what they do on Medicaid?

You get millions.

Jane Matt and Air

Millions and

Greg Bach

millions.

Yeah, that's not also how Medicaid works.

Jane Matt and Air

Andra says that the dignity of work is a teaching that comes from versus in Genesis, the biblical basis for the dignity of work.

Work is an obligation, a duty on the part of man.

Man must work out of regard for others, especially his own family and also for the society he belongs to.

I think working is good.

If you are able to work, I do believe that we get benefits from working.

I do.

I think it plays a role in your self-esteem.

It makes you feel a little bit more...

You have a little more agency.

Greg Bach

I don't disagree with that to a point.

Work can make you feel good when you're doing work, which makes you feel good.

If you are doing work that is demeaning, underpays you, doesn't give you benefits, you're not respected by management, then that is not the same to me.

You are working to live and to survive.

And that, I don't believe, leads people to

go on the government dole, it just means they're living in an untenable situation.

And they're struggling.

They're struggling.

Doing good work can make you feel so good.

And that's because you are doing work which benefits you and others.

That's where I agree.

Where I stop agreeing with all that.

It just sounds so absolutely tyrannical.

Like it should be said on the pulpit.

It just sounds so creepy It gives me very very I'm sorry to make comparison to people but it gives me very very third right key vibes very Nazi vibes because of what was on the gates of Auschwitz that said work sets you free.

Yeah I'm sorry.

There's a first thing I hear when I think of

What was the exact phrasing?

Jane Matt and Air

The dignity of work.

Greg Bach

The dignity of work.

It's just absolutely, to me, disgusting.

Jane Matt and Air

We are waiting again to try and connect with New York Times bestselling author, Andrew Watkins, who has a great sub-stack that you can check out.

And we will include that link in our show notes once the show is over.

Been talking about...

Project 2025 and its basis in Christian nationalism Russ vote is one of the main authors of project 2025 who is a big proponent of The Christian nationalist movement essentially and the dignity of work and we're gonna hear that more and more and more as they talk about cutting people off of Medicaid and They're all it's it's interesting to see the framing because it's about saving

Medicaid.

Yes.

This is this is what they're saying.

It's about saving Medicaid for the people who really deserve it.

Now, this doesn't also mean that I don't think that there aren't people who take advantage of the system.

Greg Bach

There probably are.

Yes, you can go and you can research that easily.

And there is there are there are abuses within our social safety net.

And they are they can be portrayed, perpetrated by individuals.

But also, we don't talk about this.

Well, no, we talked to you and I have talked about this, but by companies like Rick Scott.

Oh, yeah.

Who defrauded the government for billions of dollars.

Jane Matt and Air

Billions.

Billions of dollars.

Wasn't that one of the biggest Medicare frauds in history up to that point?

Yes.

Or the biggest.

Greg Bach

He had to resign from the company and then he sets himself, oh, you know what?

I think I'm just gonna run for office now.

And he got to do that.

He got to do that.

After pleading, didn't he take the

Jane Matt and Air

fifth?

Yeah.

372 times?

Okay, that might be an exaggeration.

But yeah, he took the fifth during that trial over and over and over again.

Yeah.

But it's all good.

It's all good.

It's all good.

Debbie from South Dakota is on the line.

Good morning, Debbie.

Thank you so much for joining us.

How you doing?

Debbie from South Dakota (caller)

Good morning.

Jane Matt and Air

What did you want to say?

Debbie from South Dakota (caller)

Well, uh, first of all, hi, cuz

Greg Bach

So Debbie is my cousin who lives in South Dakota and I just want to remind you Debbie.

We're on the radio.

So just

Debbie from South Dakota (caller)

Okay,

Greg Bach

all right.

I love you very much.

Debbie from South Dakota (caller)

Keep

Greg Bach

it clean.

What's up my friend?

What's up, dear?

Jane Matt and Air

You know, I'm just really upset that

The government thinks that most people on Medicaid are able body workers.

They don't want to be on Medicaid.

They want jobs.

And some of them cannot get up and do the work that the government thinks they can.

Some of them have sick children who need health care and cannot leave them at daycare because it costs too much.

So they're worried about feeding them and getting them health care.

And these rich people don't even can't even imagine how to struggle in life at all.

And they think it's like, oh, they're stealing our money.

It's like the government has stolen our money.

Debbie, I don't mean to cut you off, but we got a we got a hard break.

We're coming up to really appreciate you checking in.

You can always

Debbie from South Dakota (caller)

join us

Jane Matt and Air

again.

Thanks, Debbie.

Andrew Watkins is joining us.

Good morning, Andrew.

Thank you so much for being here.

How you doing?

Andrew Watkins (guest)

I'm better late than never, right?

Absolutely.

We're delighted.

Jane Matt Nair (host)

We're delighted you could make us.

I know you got lots of other things.

You're juggling as well.

You also have other things going on in your life.

We were talking a little bit about the whole dignity of work before you joined us and how this is a big, big part of Project 2025.

And that's all we're hearing about now with cuts to Medicaid.

I'm sorry, strengthening Medicaid.

That's what it is.

Let's talk a little bit about the

origins of this dignity of work and where that comes from and what that means.

Andrew Watkins (guest)

Okay, so the dignity of work is a Christian nationalist phrase.

It sounds pretty benign, doesn't it?

You'd never really know that it came from Christian nationalism.

But it comes from Catholic Christian nationalism.

It is a Catholic phrase.

If you look on the U.S.

Conference of Catholic Bishops, you'll find a whole page devoted to it.

Pope John Paul II wrote a whole big piece on it when he was Pope.

And so the authors of Project 2025, Jonathan Berry, who wrote that section, clerk for Sam Alito, who's affiliated with Opus Dei, he helped get Neil Gorsuch onto the court.

So he's very much a part of that camp.

The dignity of work is drawn from the Bible.

in that they go all the way back to Genesis.

And when I've been on here before, we've talked about how important the Genesis Adam and Eve and the fall and the cursed story is to Christian nationalists.

Jane Matt Nair (host)

And by the way,

Andrew Watkins (guest)

for people who might

Jane Matt Nair (host)

not have heard our earlier discussion, just so you know, everything is Eve's fault.

That's pretty much all you need to

Andrew Watkins (guest)

know.

Everything is Eve's fault, but God also cursed Adam as part of the fall.

Adam was cursed with having to work.

So this dignity of work is part of God's plan from God's curse of man.

Man must work to have dignity and purpose and to not be idle.

If you've heard the term, you know, an idle mind is the devil's workshop.

Devil's playground.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Chaucer's, Canterbury Hotels, yeah.

Right.

You know, and he was a big Catholic, medieval Catholic writer.

But that seeped into Protestantism during the Reformation.

So my pastor often said being idle was of the devil when I was growing up in Baptist Christian nationalism.

And this is very much part of that.

Christian nationalists believe that people who aren't working allow their minds and bodies to be idle.

And when their minds and bodies are idle, they are sinning.

They are more

Open to sinning and so they need to give people who are idle something to do So that they'll stop sinning so that God will stop judging America for its sin And that's really what the dignity of work is about

Greg Bach (co-host)

so okay You when you were first discussing it or first brought it up just now you said seems pretty you know doesn't really bring up any kind of innocuous right

it doesn't for me and I'm not you know I was raised Catholic but we didn't talk about the dignity of work I was I was a low-level Catholic we were very very lazy we were very idle I guess but what when I hear the dignity of work that phrasing I think of

what my first thought is going to the words over the gates of Auschwitz, which says, work sets you free.

It's a very, it actually gives me like gross chill bumps, because just that notion of someone standing over you saying, if you work, you'll be fine.

And that's not what we're doing.

We're telling them to, that we're telling them that God will judge you if you don't work.

And that's just, and it's just so, ugh.

So I don't like it.

Andrew Watkins (guest)

Yeah, no, and and you're going to be hearing that phrase coming out of Republican politicians mouths over and over again in the coming months to justify this pulling people off Medicaid and Medicare and forcing them to work I mean Brooke Rollins did a notion of it this week when she said we're going to put these people to work in the fields and give them something to do That's all part of this dignity of work thing

Russ votes said it on Fox Business earlier

Greg Bach (co-host)

this

Andrew Watkins (guest)

week.

They're going to say it all the time.

So when Americans hear them saying that, I want them to understand what they really mean.

That's always one of my goals when Christian nationalists vomit things out of their mouths.

I want Americans to understand what they're really saying to you when they deploy these phrases.

Jane Matt Nair (host)

You're our Christian nationalist translator.

Andra,

Andrew Watkins (guest)

you really are.

I mean,

Jane Matt Nair (host)

because again,

Your background coming from a Christian nationalist childhood and educational system gives you insights that a lot of us don't have without coming from that kind of background

Andrew Watkins (guest)

Yeah, yeah, so and that was one of my goals in doing this work They tell you to your face what they want to do to you and then they laugh because you don't understand them So I want many many more Americans to understand

what they're saying when they say things like let's pray about disasters that we caused or here's the dignity of work or whatever other things they want to say to Americans to explain away the horrors that they're causing in our country right now.

Jane Matt Nair (host)

Do you have time to stick around after the 10 o'clock news?

Absolutely.

Andrew Watkins (guest)

Wonderful.

I owe you lots more as much time

Jane Matt Nair (host)

as you want.

Andrew Watkins is a New York Times best-selling author and also has the sub-stack for such a time as this.

It's wonderful.

We're going to continue our conversation with Andrew.

After we get back, stay close.

You are listening to Matt Nair on air.

Coming up in a little bit, Brittney Merleau will be here, Civic Media.

award-winning meteorologist for weather and wine.

We're going to talk a little bit about the weather today, what's coming up this weekend, and look a little bit into next week.

So stick around for that right now, though.

She is a New York Times best-selling author, and she has the sub-stack called for such a time as this.

Andrew Watkins is our guest.

So happy to have you here, Andrew.

So

We could keep you on for three hours and still have more things to talk about.

We had listeners Sue just texted in with a question about Project 2025 Russ vote and how this is also all connected to the seven mountains mandate.

Andrew Watkins

OK, so the seven mountain mandate is part of dominionist Christian nationalism, which is a strain of Christian nationalism that drew out of.

Protestant charismatic churches, Church of God churches, they believe in speaking in tongues and that sort of thing.

That's not what I grew up in.

I believe that Dominionism is the opus de catholic version of Christian nationalism, but for Protestant charismatic.

So the Seven Mountain Mandate is

They have these seven mountains that they're supposed to take over to take over society right and they Stay very secret in their pursuit of those mountains It's unlike what I grew up in where you're very in your face with everyone about your Christianity and always witnessing to them and talking about God and

evangelizing.

It's very much not that in Dominionism you hide who you are, you hide your fanaticism until you reach your mountain.

There is a Supreme Court Justice in Alabama who ruled on the IVF case and he is one of these people who wrote about and referenced the Seven Mountain Mandate in Dominionism.

as part of the justification for his IVF decision in ruling against IVF.

And so, you know, he worked for however long to get to that point where then he could influence our secular laws with his dominionist philosophies.

And dominionists believe that they must force everyone to be dominionists so that

the earth can be perfect enough for Jesus to return.

And until they succeed in forcing everyone to live their version of dominion as Christianity through laws that are governed by their interpretation of the Bible, Jesus won't return.

And so that's what they're working toward in pursuing these seven mountains and taking over them so that they could convert the world to this Shangri-La that Jesus can return to and rule for a thousand years.

I hope that answered your question.

Greg Bach

Absolutely.

And it scared the living crap out of me.

Jane Matinair

Just, and just to clarify the seven mountains, our family, religion, education, media, arts and entertainment business.

and government.

So as Andrew said, these are the seven areas that they believe they need to be the head of in order to bring about the second coming.

Greg Bach

And I know that

Andrew Watkins

no, no, no,

Greg Bach

I was just going to say, none of us are lawyers, and we can probably bring this up with Jim Santel another time.

But when you reference such a deep religious belief in your opinion on a decision, it feels like you open yourself up to that decision being changed.

When you say that, when your decision on IVF is so rooted in your Christianity, I feel like someone can come forward later.

I mean, this is obviously a very tainted decision.

It wasn't based in science.

In fact, it's based in one person's religious theology.

Therefore, you can open it up for reinterpretation down the road.

Now, granted, you said it was Louisiana.

Alabama.

Andrew Watkins

It was Alabama.

Greg Bach

I don't see it happening anytime soon, but I do feel like

Being so open and brazen isn't the best option for you.

Andrew Watkins

Well, if they do lose power, then we could overturn these kinds of decisions.

And that should be one of our goals.

Breaking the wall between separation of church and state is a fundamental goal of all Christian nationalists.

And this week, they've accomplished that as well.

Jane Matinair

Big win.

Andrew Watkins

With the Supreme Court ruling.

on letting pastors endorse candidates from the pulpit, which is just ridiculous because they've practically been doing that for decades

Jane Matinair

anyway.

Yes, absolutely.

But now it's official.

Now it's official.

Andrew Watkins

So, you know, Opus Dei Catholics have a similar approach, and that's what I was going to say earlier.

Dominionists really ripped off Opus Dei's approach.

They don't have a seven-mountain mandate, but they have a similar approach of taking over the world.

and taking over of these different aspects of society for Catholicism.

Leonard Leo operates under that mentality.

That's how he attacked the judiciary.

Now he has another non-profit to attack media and entertainment and try to take those over for his Catholic worldview.

So the two of them operate very similarly.

They just have

Different ideas about who's really going to heaven and someday they'll have to fight about

Greg Bach

that And Really quick if you're just joining us Andrew Watkins is a New York Times best-selling author and she also runs a substack called for such a time as this she is our Christian nationalist whisperer she comes on the show about once a quarter to talk to us about This world I mean like I grew up.

I was born raised

I enjoyed the sacraments of most most the sacraments of Catholicism, but I never until I met you knew that there was a I I Guess I never I treated opus day with kid gloves because I only knew from the movies But I didn't realize how nefarious it was and for my brain the only thing I can think of is

Marvel movies of course because I'm me but I think of Hydra which is to hide your intentions until you work your way into the power to the halls of power and then you spread and You think well if we just if we just vote Trump out.

Well, that's gonna fix it It's not this is this is taking its roots over decades to Andrew.

I'm sure but yes, you mentioned Dominion opus day

There are so many Christian nationalist sex alone you like to take away all the Christianity groups the sex within Christianity, but the national the nationalist groups They're so they're all in power now in some sort.

I think you mentioned a while ago Someone has to

Jane Matinair

win and that's why she said at some point they're gonna have to fight this out on who really gets to be the the the expert right

Andrew Watkins

Exactly.

In the Baptist church that I grew up in, my pastor taught more sermons probably on how Catholics were all going to hell because their faith was wrong than just about any other topic.

So none of them agree about who's going to heaven and how they're going to heaven.

You take someone like Mike Lee, who is a Christian nationalist, but he's Mormon.

In the church that I grew up in, being a Mormon was being part of a cult.

That wasn't even Christian.

but there are Christian nationalist Mormons.

So they're going to have to have a big war eventually over which version of faith they're going to force everyone to live by.

And that will just be dreadful for all of us.

So we really need to work hard to keep from getting to that point.

Jane Matinair

Well, and again, one of the whole reason we have you on the show is because you have a perspective that I haven't heard from anyone else.

You grew up in a Christian nationalist household.

You went through that schooling system.

So and then you managed to get out of it, which is not a small thing.

So I think you have a perspective that.

others do not have.

In the time that we've got left, Andrew, I wanted to talk a little bit, and we have spoken about this before, about the Christian nationalist view of natural disasters.

In the wake of this horrific flooding in Texas, we also had, I believe, three people were killed in New Mexico with flash flooding that happened there.

There's some flooding in North Carolina happening now too.

Yeah, it's a nightmare.

But to a Christian nationalist, these things happen

because too many people don't believe what they believe, so we all get punished for it.

Is that accurate?

Andrew Watkins

Well, they believe that we're living in the last days of the world and that increased national disasters will be part of that.

But they also believe that God is judging America for its sin and sexual immorality and rejection of him.

and these natural disasters are part of that judgment.

So when Mike Johnson struts on to meet the press and sits down with his smarmy sanctimonious face and says, we just need to pray, that's really all we can do, really what he's saying to you Americans is God is judging America for its sin, for its rejection of him.

These natural disasters are part of that.

And we really can't do anything about God's judgment.

As Christian nationalists, you know, he judges and he makes decisions and we can't get in the way of that and we can't do anything to relieve that.

If enough people suffer and if enough people lose things, then maybe people will realize how simple they are, how much they're sinning, and they'll turn away from that sin and they'll turn back to God such that we'll have a revival and God will stop judging America.

And the

Jane Matinair

natural disasters will stop.

Andrew Watkins

And then the natural disasters will stop.

And so when a Republican, any Republican says prayers are gonna get us through this or thoughts and prayers, that's really what they're saying to you.

God is judging you because you're such a horrible sinner.

And when enough people stop being sinning and causing God to judge America, then this can

Greg Bach

stop.

I just think about the fact that it does this justify then.

or is it a prosperity gospel thing that if we're in the end days and nothing matters because God's judgment is final and we are sinning too much, it allows them to say, well, we don't have to worry about helping the poor.

We don't have to help about, we don't have to create systems that strengthen Medicaid, widen Medicaid, Medicare, all of those things.

The successful are the best examples of God's love because they have prospered more than anyone.

So they should get all the money because it's gonna be all over anyways.

I just feel like

It goes back to a very simple notion, Andrew, that if they're so Christian, if they're so religious, if they're so deeply rooted in the idea of God's love, they should be the first ones out there saying, we need to help everyone.

We need to make sure that

Andrew Watkins

everyone... Exactly.

Greg Bach

But they don't.

Andrew Watkins

But this creates... Yeah, it creates this version of nihilism.

You know, why do we need to help anybody?

Because we're living in the last days.

We don't need to do anything about any of these disasters because these are all part of the Bible's predictions anyway.

And God is judging people and we don't need to help them because they deserve his judgment.

So it's little wonder why they have no empathy whatsoever because they've been lobotomized of their empathy through these churches that teach this nihilistic view of humanity and society and God.

Jane Matinair

Well, and I think it's interesting and we're running out of time, but I do think it's interesting with this decision, allowing churches now and religious organizations to talk politics from the pulpit.

mainstream religions are having a hard time.

They're losing people the way it is.

I would think for some denominations, like the more Christian nationalists, this is going to work in their favor for more mainstream Christian organizations.

I think that's going to be a bigger turn off.

And I think people are going to continue to leave because they don't want to hear politics from the pulpit.

Andrew Watkins

I agree.

You know, Christian nationalists have done a lot to destroy Christianity overall.

Jane Matinair

Yeah, they've done a lot of damage and will

Andrew Watkins

continue to do.

on if they stay on this trajectory.

Jane Matinair

Subscribe to her sub-stack.

She is a New York Times best-selling author.

The sub-stack is called for such a time as this.

Andra Watkins has been our guest.

Thank you so very much, Andra.

I always love having you on the show.

We'll see you again soon.

Bye, everybody.

We got weather and wine with Brittany Merlot on the way.

What's coming up?

What should you pack if you're going on vacay?

That's all on the way.

Stay here.

Matt and Aaron here on the Civic Media Radio Network.

SPEAKER_??

you

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Good morning.

Welcome back to Matt and Air on Air.

Jane Matt and Air, Greg Bach, Dr. Slide on the Board, coming to you from our studio at Radio Park in Racine.

Join us at 855-752-4842.

You can leave a comment if you're watching on the live stream, on Facebook YouTube, and what used to be Twitter.

Coming up later on today on The Todd Alba Show, he's gonna be broadcasting from the Northern Wisconsin State Fair.

Fine.

I know, along with Pat Critello, they will be joined by Trig V. Olsen, I believe.

Also, the Rusty Volk is the fair director up there for the great Northern Wisconsin State Fair food fair sampling.

Go for the corn dogs.

I'm there.

Go for the corn dogs.

And what's worse in hour number three?

Also, they're going to talk about Kube.

Oh, man, Kube.

Kube, which is a it's a really cool sporting event.

Huge.

Huge worldwide worldwide huge in the Eau Claire area.

So join Todd today from the northern Wisconsin state fair Todd all by two to four across the network right now joining us our award winning civic media meteorologist Brittany Merleau is here for a little weather and wine.

How are you doing lady?

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

I'm doing pretty good.

How are you guys?

Jane Matt and Air (host)

We're good.

We're good.

Great.

Let's talk about the weather we got coming today.

Is it going to rain or what's going on?

We have

two systems.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Yes, we do.

We've got a whole mess of things going on, very active, very unsettled over the next few days.

The rain is already starting to push into southwestern Wisconsin right now.

It's light to start as we go through this afternoon and especially into this evening and overnight and through the rest of the weekend too.

We are looking at heavy, heavy rainfall potentially.

I've been looking at this system for, you know, every single day, multiple times a day for a while now, and it's been changing and shifting and it's been putting heavy amounts of rain in northern Wisconsin.

And now it's starting to really settle into southern Wisconsin area.

So central to southern half of the state, be on alert because you could pick up a quick one to two inches, maybe even three or four just tonight.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Oh, that's

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

a

Jane Matt and Air (host)

lot.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

days of the case as we go into tomorrow and, you know, the weekend as well, because we've got a lot of moisture.

We've got a lot of humidity.

We've got a lot of stuff to work with.

So there's a lot of moisture that can come out of these storms.

And that's a little bit concerning because we saw flash flooding in a lot of places recently.

I mean, Chicago, Texas, a lot of, you know, Minnesota too.

So we've got to be on alert.

It happens.

fast and this is your forewarning because it happens so fast it is hard for us meteorologists to get that word out and to everyone where they need it.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

And I think it's hard for people to appreciate Brittany just how much three inches of rain is.

If that were snow, do you know what that would translate into?

That would be several feet of snow, wouldn't it?

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Yes, it would.

So we're talking about a

Jane Matt and Air (host)

lot of water and what can happen in a very short period of time.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Yes, and it's kind of the situation of the fact that this front is moving so slow.

These storms are going to kind of be stuck in one spot, barely moving.

And that's why we're getting dumped on.

And this is why this is a concern.

And this isn't just for people by rivers.

Please stay alert, even in the cities, because like you saw in Chicago, there are water rescues out of cars on Tuesday of this week in downtown, affecting many, many, many people.

And I always say,

I'll meet her, I'll just turn around, don't drown.

You've heard that phrase.

I was just gonna say that,

Greg Bach (co-host)

though.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

What does that

Greg Bach (co-host)

mean?

Sorry, I've actually, what does

Jane Matt and Air (host)

that mean?

You've

Greg Bach (co-host)

never heard turn around, don't drown?

I've heard don't drown many times.

People tell me that all the time.

You tell them what it means, Brittany.

Turn around, don't drown.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

You never know if that road is underneath you, first and foremost.

I have gone to flooding situations in northern Wisconsin.

I mean, think about Duluth.

They've had stink holes after major

Jane Matt and Air (host)

floods.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Many, many things can happen.

It can look like the road is there and there's just a little bit of water.

No big deal.

Once you get in there, if you have just a foot of water standing there, it can float your car.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Yeah,

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

there's a current and you're gone from a river.

You're moving.

Yeah,

Greg Bach (co-host)

you're gone.

I get it.

Now I understand the context.

I thought you meant like when you're looking at the rain, just turn around.

I don't know.

I'm not trying to be funny.

I didn't know it.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

But I think to Brittany, unfortunately, sometimes I think people in certain types of vehicles think because, hey, you know, I'm driving a however many thousand pound F 150 and I'm sitting up higher.

And so that's going to make a difference.

If you float, you float.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

You float.

Yep.

And again, repeating.

You don't know if there's wires under there.

I've seen highways shattered.

That road isn't as thick as you really think it is.

And there's things underneath it.

So my main priority is you guys stay safe out there.

Yeah, just don't

Jane Matt and Air (host)

drive through standing water.

You don't know.

You don't know what is what's ahead of you.

But journey it splashes.

Yeah, I know.

Go find a puddle in your house.

You can splash in that.

SPEAKER_??

Oh, fun.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

What are we looking at as far as getting into next week?

Is this unstable where they're going to be continuing?

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Yeah.

So what's happening?

We've got a cold front that is going to actually start to slam through on Saturday.

So this cold front is going to move a bunch more rainfall, more showers and storms through the state throughout the entire day.

So Northwest early, by the time it gets down southeast, it's going to be later in the day.

Sunday, we finally have a high pressure system that settles in.

It's going to be cooler too and comfortable.

Some of that humidity is starting to leave.

But it's only one day.

Oh, OK.

And then the

Jane Matt and Air (host)

humidity is back.

Monday.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Yep.

And then it starts to push back in on Monday.

We'll still stay sunny.

We're still dry.

So Sunday, Monday, good time to cut that grass.

But

Greg Bach (co-host)

don't tell me what to do.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Tuesday.

You don't have to.

OK.

I mean, maybe the city will make you.

But we are going to see more rain moving in by Tuesday night into Wednesday and our Thursday as well.

So not too much of a dry stretch there.

However.

the sun will be nice after the next few days.

I'll tell you

Greg Bach (co-host)

that.

I don't know about anyone else because I live in Kenosha, but it's been cooler, like 70s and upper 60s.

You have like a week and a half of walking outside and it's like hot at 5.30 in the morning.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

You can just

Greg Bach (co-host)

feel the moisture in the air.

But you walk up to the water and I'm like, oh, this feels nice.

This is perfect.

Stay this

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

way

Greg Bach (co-host)

forever.

Brittany Merleau (meteorologist)

Gotta love that East Breeze off the lake, keeping your free AC.

Brittany Rulow

News is coming up next when we come back.

Audio, Sorbet, baseball, baby!

Yeah!

You're listening to Matt Nair on Air.

This is the Civic Media Radio Network.

SPEAKER_??

Yeah.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Good morning, welcome back to Matt and Air on Air.

Jane Matt and Air, Greg Bach, Dr. Slide on the board, coming to you from our studio at Radio Park in Racine.

You can join us, call our text at 855-752-4842.

You can also leave a comment if you're watching on the live stream on Facebook, YouTube, and what used to be Twitter.

Very excited, Matt and Air on Air.

And the Todd Alba Show, we are going on the road next week.

We are?

Yes.

When did this get decided?

We've been working on this for a while.

I am really upset.

We are going to be stopping next Wednesday.

We'll be broadcasting from Oshkosh on Thursday from Butternut

Unidentified Contributor

and on

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Friday from Hayward.

We're going to talk about the EAA Air Venture.

We're going to be talking about Packers Training Camp.

Going to learn about the history of Butternut.

along with many other small towns in Wisconsin.

So, so much more.

I hope you can join us next week.

Special road trip additions of Matt Nair on air and the Todd Alba show next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday should be a lot of fun.

We're really looking forward to it.

We talked about this earlier this morning and said to if you have suggestions, if you live in those areas and you think there's something we should stop by and check out, let us know.

Yeah, send it to Jane says at civic media dot us.

Greg Bach (host)

Yeah, it's I believe Tony on the live stream told us earlier that there is a place that I'm not finding right now.

So yeah, it's north.

It's north of Hayward.

Go to saw mill saloon.

There it is.

Okay, cool.

All right.

Send those to Jane says at civic media dot us and we'll put them on a little list.

And if we, you know, hopefully we'll be able to hit

Hit them and say hello.

And also thanks to my cousin for calling.

It was really nice to hear from her.

Unidentified Contributor

She's

Greg Bach (host)

lovely.

All right, yeah.

We're looking forward to that.

It's going to be a really fun time.

I'm looking forward to seeing parts of Wisconsin that I've never seen before.

I've really, really wanted to explore more of Wisconsin, especially the Northern area, because I just imagined standing in a.

Gorgeous space in the state going

Jane Matt and Air (host)

I can

Greg Bach (host)

just breathe and enjoy and relax

Jane Matt and Air (host)

the one thing I remember when Todd and I went on the road last year was The amount of stars that you can see when

Greg Bach (host)

you get

Jane Matt and Air (host)

away from all the ambient light in the

Greg Bach (host)

city.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

It really is awe-inspiring Yeah, it is and you know how much I love space you do love space

Greg Bach (host)

you might have to hold me while I'm

Jane Matt and Air (host)

crying Yes, join us next week as Greg cries over space

And many other things will be in Oshkosh on Wednesday and Butternut on Thursday.

And then we'll wrap up our adventure on Friday in Hayward, the wonderful Hayward, Wisconsin.

Right now, Audio Sorbet, JR Radcliffe.

We had a little rescheduling

Greg Bach (host)

with

Jane Matt and Air (host)

JR.

So he'll be back in a couple of weeks to join us to talk about things sports.

So we're going to do Audio Sorbet instead and still talk baseball.

Unidentified Contributor

Yeah.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Let's talk about yesterday's Brewer's game.

Unidentified Contributor

Get that broom because it's sweeping the Dodgers, the World Championship Dodgers.

Calvin,

Jane Matt and Air (host)

do you have, do we have a couple clips to play from yesterday's game?

Brewer's and the Dodgers.

Let's hear that clip, please, Calvin.

Pat Murphy (interviewee)

Yeah, I think we, you know, we're going to keep coming after, you know, we keep clawing away.

It's base hits.

Did we have an extra base hit today?

No, we didn't.

Not a

Trevor McGill (interviewee)

single one in the game.

There

Pat Murphy (interviewee)

wasn't a single one in the game.

Well, that speaks to our pitching staff and Contreras, but, you know, just, um, the way we went about it, you know, like that's it.

Greg Bach (host)

I love, so that was Pat Murphy, our, you know, your 2024 coach of the year.

He won coach of the year last year.

I love this man.

And when we had, when we had Paul on, when we had, um,

We had JR on.

We all sort of agreed that in the face of losing Craig council and losing, you know, that was going to be tough, difficult.

The Brewers did quite well last year.

Didn't get as far as I'd like, but they definitely did way better than expected.

And this season, I feel like we lost players and we expected, you know, I think, I think the, the, the, the generous prediction was a 500 season, 50, 50, 50.

Now they're all, they're above 500 right now that can change, but they have worked

Jane Matt and Air (host)

a lot of the season.

Greg Bach (host)

They've worked themselves out of a, a deficit from fourth place to second place.

And if I'm not mistaken, I should have checked this, checked this before, but we were within a few games of first place from the Cubs.

So once again, this team being always undercut doubted by, I, I'm one of those people who doubted we're a game and a half behind first place.

That's pretty great.

And that was, that's a great move.

They just work and they move.

And I feel like there, there's just something special about the brewers.

And with Pat Murphy at the helm, it's just great to watch.

And I told you yesterday on the show, we beat the Dodgers two games in a row.

I would love a sweep, but I'll take the win.

And if you're keeping track in the ninth inning, they were losing.

And then all of a sudden in the civic media chats, it was just- It exploded.

I think the exact

Unidentified Contributor

quote was, I

Greg Bach (host)

love this team.

It just exploded, yeah.

And it's not fair weather fandom either.

It's the fact that we just get so excited because, you know, you can't be a fair weather fan of the Brewers.

They do well, but they don't win rings.

And that's sad, but we are a fierce group of...

Fans we love that team so much Calvin Did you watch the game

Calvin (board operator)

yesterday?

You know, I'm not a big baseball fan personally, but it's always exciting and fun when the viewers are doing good.

It's It's kind of just like an energy that comes to the city and the state and wide when Any of our sports teams are good, but especially the Brewers with it being

summer and fun and all that kind of thing.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

It was great.

It was great to see him sweep the Dodgers.

Yeah.

I, and I don't think that that's something a lot of people anticipated.

I don't

Greg Bach (host)

know.

They didn't.

I mean, they, they definitely did not anticipate where they were going to go this season, you know, but the, I mean, I think the same thing can be said against the pirates too.

They were not expecting big thing from the end.

beat the pirates.

They're doing really well against teams that are on paper are outdoing them.

It should be beating them.

Yeah, exactly.

And it just goes to show.

And I think I think a lot has to do with someone like Trevor McGill, who had a great game.

And I think the Miz is a great player.

And he's, you know, he's just getting started, Jax.

I mean, we've got we've got both a great foundation of older players and this new crop.

who are in and by older, I mean, you know, they're in their late twenties, early thirties.

Oh my God, they're almost dead.

Oh my God.

But it's really, Calvin, I believe you have, uh, you have a clip from, uh, from Trevor McGill talking about the win against the Dodgers as well and being named possibly an All-Star.

Trevor McGill (interviewee)

Sweet the Dodgers at home.

That's give the fans what they want.

Right.

That was, that was awesome.

So glad to be a part of that.

And then also with the news as well, like that's just some goal that I put out in the off season and, uh, here it is coming true.

Greg Bach (host)

Oh, he was named.

Oh, I'm sorry.

He was named to the ulcer.

I'm sorry.

I didn't.

That's pretty exciting.

Trevor McGill (interviewee)

That's

Greg Bach (host)

very, very exciting.

I mean, you've, you've been talking about the Brewers, I'm sure, for a long time in radio and whatnot, and you've got to see some cool stuff.

I mean, are there any memories you have of the Brewers that?

Well,

Jane Matt and Air (host)

and again, unfortunately, this wasn't a win, but in 1982, when they were in the series, and I was at my first job in radio in New Olm, Minnesota.

And I was in a play and we were rehearsing for the play when the game was going on.

So when I wasn't on stage, I would run across the street to this bar so I could catch up on the score.

So I'm running back and forth and running back and forth.

And even though they didn't go all the way, it was still just chilling.

You know, and just so exciting.

And I think Todd has talked a lot about that the movie about the 82 blues.

And again, we all know how that ended.

Yeah, we all know they didn't go all the way, but it still was a wonderful.

It was a wonderful season.

Greg Bach (host)

It was a very young team, too.

And I don't mean the ages of the players.

I mean, the fact that that team had only been around for 12 years.

It's not in the in the in the annals and the histories of baseball.

That's that's a baby.

It's a baby team and the fact they made it.

And and we just.

I would love to make it further.

Like, you know, we got close in 2018, but it just kind of, and the Dodgers were the ones who took it away from us.

Interesting.

They beat us in game seven of the NLCS, which was heartbreaking to watch, but it does mean we can get there.

I mean, and we want to know from you folks, we want to know your baseball memories, your brewers memories.

Do you have, do you have Milwaukee Braves memories too?

That would

Jane Matt and Air (host)

be

Greg Bach (host)

great.

You know, my grandmother, she told stories.

She worked at County Stadium from

the, I think from when it was built really to the early nineties, she worked, she was a concession lady.

She sold hot dogs and beer and things like that, but she worked there for decades and she had nothing but wonderful stories to tell about the players.

There are always so nice.

They were always accessible.

You know, they call her Ruthie and whatnot.

And she's awesome.

It's just a good thing to have.

So, I mean, I remember going to a game with, I've,

It was either my cousin or my dad.

I think it was my cousin though.

We were playing the twins and it was my first taste of a nail biting victory where we were, it was truly out of a movie.

It was bought of the ninth, down by one run, two on base, Robin Yacht hits a home run and we win.

And I can still remember the pop of the crowd when we realized it was going

Unidentified Contributor

on.

Greg Bach (host)

And I had never at that point in my life, I think,

experienced group excitement of that level because a little kid sure but just that notion you hear that you know that and you just yeah and

Unidentified Contributor

everyone uses

Greg Bach (host)

their mind you're like oh my gosh

Jane Matt and Air (host)

yeah we want I still remember that too this day we'd love to hear your memories eight five five seven five two four eight four two that's eight five five seven five civic talking about the crew sweeping the Dodgers yesterday that's a pretty good thing

It's a very,

Unidentified Contributor

very good

Jane Matt and Air (host)

thing.

Unfortunately, the other memory that sticks with me, but the brewery.

OK.

When they built Miller Park.

Yeah.

Replace, knock down County Stadium,

Unidentified Contributor

built

Jane Matt and Air (host)

a new stadium.

And they had the bathrooms with the floor to ceiling windows.

What?

I don't

Greg Bach (host)

see.

I don't

Jane Matt and Air (host)

remember that.

I do not remember this.

I would let anybody listening.

In the bathrooms, they had floor to ceiling windows.

in the bathrooms, in the bathrooms.

And I remember going to that opening day with a girlfriend of mine.

And as we were leaving, we saw things we were not ever hoping to sign up for.

And then they changed it and they put something up halfway against the windows because some people just apparently don't know how to behave themselves.

Unidentified Contributor

God, I love baseball so much.

Don't get that at a Packers game, do you?

No, that's just too cold.

And you can tell

Greg Bach (host)

then.

Jane Matt and Air (host)

Yes, you absolutely

Greg Bach (host)

can.

Yeah, I just, and I love, I love, you know, I'm hopefully going to go to a game in Chicago, a Wrigley game this year.

I've been

Jane Matt and Air (host)

to... Wrigley is a great, I've only been to one game at Wrigley.

It's such a beautiful park.

Greg Bach (host)

It's a beautiful park.

It's a

Jane Matt and Air (host)

beautiful park.

Greg Bach (host)

Yeah.

And I don't think I want to go see the Brewers play the Cubs there just because I feel like I would end up having a panic attack because this the Brewers versus the Cubs is a thing.

I like going to others.

I like going to other ball parks to relax like I've been to the Angels Park and there's something about going to a game where you don't really care of either team wins.

Like I went to the Angels game and at the time that's actually where Shohei Otani came from.

But I don't think he was on the team at that point.

But.

It was a third place team versus a fourth place team.

And I had my brewers hat on.

I'm like, I don't.

You're in the park.

I'm in the park.

It's a good day.

As long as you boys have a good time.

You know, I just love baseball so much.

Maybe there's some folks up in the northern area.

Is there any minor league baseball?

Is there like any independent baseball that maybe we can catch a game in the evening?

That's a great

Jane Matt and Air (host)

look into

Greg Bach (host)

that.

Please let me know.

I would love to do that.

You are going out tonight.

There's a local event.

Oh, that's right.

I'm like,

Greg Bach

what are you talking about?

I'm almost 48 years old.

I don't go unless I'm

Jane Matt Nair

Boswell books.

Greg Bach

Yes, Boswell books in Milwaukee on Downer.

It is a wonderful, wonderful independent bookstore and they have wonderful events and one of the wonderful actually two wonderful people who will be there will be Felipe Torres Medina, who was our guest earlier this week to talk about

his book, America Let Me In, which is a choose your own immigration story.

He will be with his wife, Taylor K. Phillips, who is also an author and a, they're both comedy writers.

Felipe used to work for late night with the late show with Colbert.

Taylor still works for last week tonight with John Oliver.

She is an Emmy winner.

So I'm sure she'll probably be talking about her book as well, but this is a Felipe's book tour.

They will both be there.

I am planning on going unless something crazy happens.

I believe I should have pulled this up cause you know, I'm a professional, but I believe it starts.

Preparation

Jane Matt Nair

is

Greg Bach

key.

It starts at 6 30 this evening, but it's going to be, I think it's going to be a really fun time.

They're both very, very funny.

Jane Matt Nair

You can always go back and listen to our conversation with Felipe.

He was on earlier this week.

Yes.

Go to civicmedia.us, click on shows,

Greg Bach

go to

Jane Matt Nair

Mattnair on air, and then we have an archive of all the previous shows.

Greg Bach

And that episode is called America Let Them In, and it is, yes, it's tonight at Boswell Books, which is on Downer.

It's at 6.30.

So that's going to be a really fun time.

If you want to come out, you might see me.

I'm the guy who looks like me.

Jane Matt Nair

It is 10.54, Calvin.

That means it's

time for.

Calvin

This shouldn't be a thing!

Jane Matt Nair

As always, if you have a thing you think should not be, send it into Greg and me, as Jane says at Civic Media.us.

This is from the Daily Beast.

Tom Sanders with the byline, the headline reads, Macha tea lovers turn on each other over global shortage.

The traditional Japanese tea has skyrocketed in popularity

Putting a huge strain on vendors Macha tea lovers turning on each other because of the growing demand and global shortages skyrocketing prices and now gatekeeping Macha fans are accusing each other of hoarding The traditional green tea's meteoric rise in popularity

has put a big strain on the small number of Japanese vendors who produce matcha tea yearly, resulting in tourists bulk buying it, and then others accusing them of hoarding it.

Tiktoker users are posting videos of the tea making process, having the amount of powder they use to make it ruthlessly scrutinized.

by scorned matcha purists.

Greg Bach

You know what?

Earlier in the show, earlier in this hour, we were talking to Andrew Watkins, who was a wonderful person, and she was talking about a certain nihilist ideal of Christian nationalism.

Maybe it's time for us to be over.

Maybe we weren't what God intended, because I feel like... Well, not a little off course, somewhere.

If at any point in your life you want to pick up your phone,

and go to your social media platform of choice, go to someone's account, watch a video, and then scream at them about the way they are hoarding and or using and or gatekeeping machete.

I think you may need to touch some grass, take a breath, and just disconnect for a moment, because that is not well behavior.

Jane Matt Nair

Travel agent Michi Sado tells The Wall Street Journal, quote,

It's a little bit insane that you'd see these tourists just coming by so much matcha that they'll carry big bags of 50 or more tins of matcha.

I really am against gate gimmick in general, but I think there's some merit in not allowing these people to just ruin the whole matcha culture.

But who's ruining it?

That's the

Greg Bach

question is like matcha fans.

But who's going to eat a drink at then?

Like I like.

I'm so befuddled by this chain.

It's if you want some, that's great.

And if they're buying it, they're supporting local businesses.

Who is gatekeeping?

Like who's telling who

Jane Matt Nair

they're not happy with the people who are going there and buying up all the matcha.

And then they can't get their matcha because this person bought 50 tins of it.

So they're matcha keeping their matcha hoarding.

They're macho hoarding.

They're macho hoarding.

Greg Bach

They're macho hoarding.

That's what's upset people.

They're macho horticulturalists.

This is very strange times we live in.

I don't know if I've ever had matcha tea, but now when I hear it, I think of people saying, I love matcha.

Jane Matt Nair

It's a green tea.

That was one of the only teas we would drink as kids.

Was it matcha or green?

Greg Bach

It was

Jane Matt Nair

green.

Greg Bach

This

Jane Matt Nair

is back in the 60s.

It was

Greg Bach

called green tea.

I want to get some avocado toast with my matcha.

We

Jane Matt Nair

didn't

Greg Bach

have avocado.

We had avocado and you had toast, but you never thought to put them together because

Jane Matt Nair

you don't think.

like a influencer.

It was 1967, give me a break.

It was green tea with a lot of sugar, but yes, now apparently it's a matcha wars are going on, so just be aware out there.

Yeah,

Greg Bach

just stand back.

If you see two people with bags, let them go.

Just don't even engage.

Stay out of it.

Stand back, disengage, get your green liquid somewhere else.

Protect yourself.

Protect yourself, yes, yes.

That wraps

Jane Matt Nair

up today's

Greg Bach

episode

Jane Matt Nair

of...

Calvin

This shouldn't

Jane Matt Nair

be

Calvin

a

Jane Matt Nair

thing.

Thank you Greg and Calvin and all of our engineers without you nothing works and thank you most of all for calling and for texting and for listening.
