Acknowledgement and celebration of our colleagues here at Civic Media.
Wisconsin Broadcaster Association Awards were handed out on Saturday night in Madison.
It's a big deal for TV and radio stations in the state and a chance to see colleagues and former colleagues and people who were fired and people
who fired you.
I saw a lot of, this was my first time doing, I am very new to radio, but I, and this was my first WBA and this is what I saw a lot of.
the turning of the head and seeing someone who either you didn't like at your work, and this is not like us, I'm talking about like, this was a room full of like 200 people.
But that turning of the head and seeing someone you didn't like, didn't want to see, like seeing an action and you go, oh hey!
So
and so, oh my gosh, what have you been up to?
You look
great, excuse me, I gotta go over
there now.
I'm gonna stand right over there and just look out in the middle
distance, sorry.
And if you weren't listening to the tail end of Pat Crichtlow show, radio and TV people are the worst audience on the planet.
We don't shut up for anybody.
It's embarrassing.
That's kind of true.
There was at no point, even like, yeah, there was no point where people were not talking.
No.
And it's great that we all like seeing each other so much, and there's so much to catch up on.
But you have a speaker, and there's big TV screens all over the room.
It's not like nobody knows the person is up there giving a presentation.
I think the people running the sound next year should just turn up the speaker louder and louder.

So, you know, for a company that's been around for less than three years, I feel like that is where, like the awards themselves, it is very much, it's, we get dressed up in a nice clothes and we high five ourselves.
Compliment each other.
Oh, so we're just so good at this.

Complimenting in the things we do.
When the industry shows that kind of recognition to a very young company like Civic Media, I think that's saying something about our mission and what we do and who we're talking to and what we're talking about.
So I just want to say congratulations to everyone.

It's just nice to actually be physically in the room with Todd Michaels, with Melissa Kay, with Brittany Merleau, with so many folks who are stationed all across the state.
So it was a lovely, lovely event.

Wanted to start off with this.
This happened later on Friday after we were already off the air.
But the Wisconsin Examiner, Baylor Spears, with the byline, Governor Evers calls the White House border czar's threats over ice guidance, chilling.
Now, this controversy comes from directions that Governor Evers had given to state employees on what to do if ice shows up.
This is my understanding.
They are within their legal rights to do some of these, to require identification, things like that.
And it's my understanding again, Governor Evers simply took what is legal and gave it to his, to the state employees and said, here's how you handle this.
Should I show up?
There you go.
Tom Homan, White House Borders are.
and all around.
Good guy.
Essentially threatened to
arrest Governor Evers.
Yeah.
He had, I'm trying to find the, cause he had a very like, you know, oh, way to see what's coming.
Like, why are you doing like, that is not a, like, you want to have a argument or a discussion, then call him up and talk to him or say, Hey, I'll have a discussion.
But like this.
wait to see what's coming.
Oh, cool.
Now you're threatening us.
Pretty much.
His quote continues, you cannot support what we're doing and you can't support sanctuary cities if that's what you want to do.
But if you cross that line of impediments or knowingly harboring or concealing an illegal alien, that is a felony and we will treat it as such.
Governor Evers has already said he was not telling state employees to break the law.
should immigration officials come into state buildings, quote, a Trump administration official in not so many words apparently threatened to arrest me.
The goal of this guidance was simple, to provide clear, consistent instructions to state employees and ensure they have a lawyer to help them comply with federal and state laws, nothing more, nothing less.
But Republicans and their right wing allies, including Elon Musk, lied about this guidance, spread misinformation, they never do.
What are you talking about and accused me of doing things?
I didn't do or say fueling a fake controversy of their own creation This is in a three-minute address that governor evers issued on Friday after borders are Tom Homan made those comments.
So Wait to see what's coming I guess
Yeah, that just seems really nice and doesn't make me worry about the safety of others including I mean just now as we're seeing with all of these, you know arrests
American citizens, you know, like they, they're, they're arresting people incorrectly.
They're shipping them off.
They're arresting judges because they don't like the cut of their jib apparently.
I mean, this is just turning into a thing of it goes back to what we've been talking about for over a year now, which is here are the goalposts.
This is what we're going to do, but we're going to change the goalposts.
Watch out.
And when do the goalposts not include you anymore?
When are you someone who can be disappeared?
arrested, accused, whatever it is, or at the very least, not supportive
enough.
Enough, exactly.
The guidance sent by the Department of Administration, the Evers Administration, sent out to state employees, told them to stay calm.
If an ICE agent rather enters their office, told them to ask agents for their names and badges to verify their identity, ask why they're there,
Ask for documentation like a valid warrant.
That doesn't seem outside
craziness.
No, no, you have every right to ask for the, for, what do they call it?
It's two words to do
process.
Do process.
And then it said, state employees should call the office of legal counsel to consult an attorney.
So again, he's not saying, put a bag over this person's head and escort them out of the building and hide them and put them in the trunk of your car and then drive them to an undisclosed location.
That's not anything.
That just happened.
He, as well as any good government official or lawyer or whomever is in this business, is trying to avail you of your rights in the procedures and the due process of these actions happening, just so you can be safe and know what protects you, who protects you and how to get that protection.

They had a chicken dinner, of course, for the chicken.

Anyway, yeah, well, he was supposed to be there.
So that's what apparently what all these people came for.
But did he did he actually
say he was going to be there?
Well, he was supposed to be there because it said on the invitation that Ron Johnson would be there.

Oh, well, from all of us was pretty aggravated.

They're just, it's all about democracy and rights now.

And then there was an actual person with a chicken costume on that said something to the fact of chicken.
There's no eggs in Wisconsin because of all the chicken in Washington, DC.

Over the weekend on WISN's Up Front, they get great guests.
And Matt Smith has done a really, really good job.
But they were talking about the fallout after the FBI arrested Milwaukee County Judge, Hannah Dugan.
And so Fitzgerald said there's been a lot of discussion with Chairman Jordan about that, talking about Jim Jordan.
I don't think anything is really fully developed to the point where Congress would be weighing in on anything specific.
But certainly it falls under our purview if there are some things that emerge for us to take a look at.
Scott Fitzgerald is a member of the House Judiciary Committee.
He did acknowledge the unusual nature of FBI agents putting Dugan in handcuffs and arresting her inside the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
Quote, I know the optics were certainly strong.
I think many of my colleagues that have seen it were wondering if it had to be handled that way.
Well, and we talked to Jim Santel, who is an attorney and a former US attorney.
And he said, no, if the suspect is likely to flee, then they do that.
Then they cuff you and they take you into custody.
If there's a high likelihood that you are not going to flee, here is the date.
show up at the federal courthouse.
And that's what happens then.
This was performative.
This was done for the photographs.
And it was also, I mean, it's still going on.
And she has been suspended by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on from her job for the time being.
And Pat has talked about it, and we have talked about it.
If you look at the course, the chain of events,
There's not a whole lot here.
This just shows that she was obstructing justice.
So yeah, this was a performative thing.
And I love it when they say, I love it when politicians say, well, me and my colleagues wondered if it needed to be handled that way.
Well, then why don't you say something out loud saying it was handled incorrectly?
Oh, you don't want to do that.

Why show common just garden variety guts?
Fitzgerald, former state Senate Majority Leader, this again from WISN up front, cautioned Republican lawmakers from moving too quickly, some like former Governor Scott Walker have called on the legislature to immediately remove Dugan.
Fitzgerald says, quote, I think they should wait.
You know, like we said, it was not premeditated, I don't feel, but certainly any type of knee-jerk reaction that puts a judge in a position where they've actually committed a crime.
needs to be scrutinized and reviewed at length.
It looks like the Wisconsin Supreme Court is doing that right now.

It's been interesting to see the reactions from this.

we had Dr. Lyrely on this morning, and she said, you know, in Northeastern Wisconsin, there are a lot of Catholics, and she spoke to people, and it was not just Catholics, it was people of all faith, people of no faith, who found the whole endeavor disrespectful to the memory of the Pope, because the Pope had just died, too.
Like, I think it was within a week, when that was posted.

this was a couple days ago.
It was within the first week of him being gone.
And also, let's not forget, and for all those people out there who are like,
This is the second time he has posted a meme or an AI portrait of himself as a essentially non-elected leader.
He had a king, he had the king one, which as we know is bestowed upon by God.
And now it's the Pope.
So like, it's not funny in the first place because it's disrespectful to the memory of

it.
It's
also disrespectful because he doesn't like, he's very, he's been vocal about, he didn't like Francis.
He has said horrible things about Francis.
And I take that as a slight against Catholics and he doesn't respect, well, he doesn't respect anybody.
So, and he just sees himself as this all powerful being.

I wouldn't find it funny if Barack Obama would have done it.
If Joe Biden, if anyone else would have done

This article in the Milwaukee Journal sent a note from Drake Bentley with the byline says the Archbishop of Milwaukee had strong words for President Trump making light of the Catholic Church's most serious mourning period, saying it was, quote,
Very unfortunate, unquote.
Are those
strong words?

And Trouble Park could probably call him a loser, because anyone who criticizes him is a loser.
Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grobe sent in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel May 4th.
I guess I find it to be an unfortunate thing, an unfortunate thing.
In my own understanding, just of what it means to be a Christian and a person of good will is to be respectful of other people's circumstances.
Well, you didn't describe Donald Trump at
all.
The church, Catholic Church, is in a period of mourning over the death of Pope Francis, and now it's a pivotal moment looking into the future, and it's a very serious time.
And whoever it is wants to quip and make fun, be it Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, we've lost great respect for moments like these.
And so it is what it is, I guess, but it's very unfortunate.
New York's Cardinal Timothy Dolan, formerly Archbishop of Milwaukee, when asked about the image by reporters, Dolan replied that he hoped Trump, quote, didn't have anything to do with that.
Well, you know, it wasn't good.
Unquote.
Boy, some really strong words from
Catholic
faith.
Also, he may have not created it, but he posted it on, he didn't even retweet it.
He posted it on his social media pages.
So it's not like someone else did it.
And he said, Oh, I like that.
No, he, someone gave it to me.
Like, I want to put that up.
He didn't create it.
Of course.
He doesn't know how to do that stuff, but he posted it.

And I'm not endorsing that, but it's going to happen.
And let me ask you, will you have a sense of humor that day?
Will you react well when someone says, well, it's just a joke.
Just get

take it as a joke.
I would also like to just point out as a total nerd that yesterday was May the 4th, which is May the 4th, which he was a Star Wars day.

image of himself as a Sith Lord Jedi.
I don't think he meant to be a Sith.

The big discussion is that it's a red lightsaber.
Which makes everybody knows that the red lightsabers were the bad guys.

And like I said, he didn't create this.
I'm sure someone did who knew, like- Oh, he posed for that picture, come on.
It's a life-like painting, Jane.
It's completely like just totally true to life.
Cassandra on the live stream says, Trump being tasteless, say it ain't so.
Also remember the issue with the Summer Olympics opening ceremony, yes.

melting and the shrieking from people like Marjorie Taylor Greene.

And I remember watching people try to calmly explain to them what that image actually was portraying.
But man, were they just like, I don't remember a blue person being in the in the last supper.

Oh, yeah, it's just an interesting juxtaposition when you look at what they choose to be outraged over.
