Matenaer on Air · Fri Feb 28, 2025

Greg Bach

Good, good morning.

Welcome to matinee on air.

My name is Greg box sitting in for Jane matinee who is off today, but we'll be returning Monday and we already miss her but we got a great great show for you listen to us on the civic media radio network the price the average price of milk to gallon I'm sorry 2% gallon milk is 318 which is a 1 cent rise from yesterday and the average price of eggs stays sticking at

$6 and 11 cents no change this week, but it is up 45 cents since last week Cal We got we have a message from from the the felon president

Dan Schaefer

Hmm, let's listen.

Greg Bach

Okay or not we can move on.

That's fine.

No worries

Dan Schaefer

When I win I will immediately bring prices down starting on day one

Greg Bach

I think we're at like day like 40 something or 50 something.

So good job on the prices there, but we got a great, great show for you.

Very, very packed.

I got someone sitting across from me right now, being my co-host for the first hour, my buddy, my coworker, the political editor of civic media and the founder of the recombobulation area, Dan Schaefer.

Welcome back.

Matt near on air.

It's a Friday, but it's a little different for you today.

Dan Schaefer

It's a little different,

Greg Bach

but

Dan Schaefer

we're recombobulating.

It's a discombobulating start, but we're recombobulating.

Mr. Bach, we sure are.

And it's always wonderful to be here on Matt near on air and to join you, find folks on a Friday to recombobulate.

Greg Bach

Like I said, we got a, we got a very, very packed show today.

We were going to be recombobulating with Dan for the first hour.

And then in the second hour, we're going to be talking about squirrels on the loose, squirrels on the loose folks, things that don't really matter, but.

We want to make sure you're paying attention to the real news stories at 11 o'clock and then 11 30.

I want you to think about this one, folks.

Think about this.

What is your most irrational fear?

Not biggest fear.

Not like I'm afraid of heights.

That's a real fear.

I get that one.

I am actually afraid of heights.

Yeah.

I mean, which I feel

Dan Schaefer

like there's some logic to it.

Well, yes, when you- I think it's one of the most logical

Greg Bach

phobias, actually, when you get down to it.

This one makes sense.

Yeah.

But you're most irrational.

It can be silly, it can be fun, it doesn't, and you can share it anonymously if you'd like via text, and you can get ahold of us very simply, very easily.

It's all the same number.

It's 855-752-4842.

Or you can leave a comment on the live stream.

We are on Facebook, we are on YouTube, and we are on the site we still in this house call.

X. So, uh, we're going to kick off the show with a little recon Bobby.

Oh, and also, can I

Dan Schaefer

make one comment on the irrational fears?

Greg Bach

Cause I won't be here

Dan Schaefer

for this.

And I, and I'm kind of, I have a, I have a thought here.

I had one of my friends in college had a very irrational fear.

Okay.

Uh, he was afraid of cotton balls.

Greg Bach

Okay,

Dan Schaefer

that just sounds like

Greg Bach

the work of hippie dippies.

Dan Schaefer

Well, it was a weird one and we of course Gave him a hard time with it not

Greg Bach

Because you were just real sweet to yeah,

Dan Schaefer

because if you're afraid of cotton balls He just didn't like something about the sound he didn't like the sound or something like that and it's bothered him

Greg Bach

You don't really understand you have to work really hard to make them make a sound.

Dan Schaefer

Yeah,

Greg Bach

they're one of the most quiet items.

I mean

Famously And then also don't forget it 1150 is another edition of this shouldn't be a thing this today It is the eight-legged undead edition, but yeah stick around we got a great show Dan you brought us a bevy of stuff to talk about in the first hour and always got a lot to say we get we want to kick things off

I mean, it's coming up.

We're less than five weeks away.

The, the race for Wisconsin Supreme court, just a judge, Susan Crawford versus a Brad Schimmel.

And we, um, we want to talk about that.

We want to talk about that.

And we got something, and you brought this to me yesterday regarding Brad Schimmel, a new ad that dropped from his campaign.

Dan Schaefer

Yeah.

So he put out this ad.

I don't know if it's brand new for it's been kind of like bouncing around the last couple of weeks, but it's kind of been like gaining and prominence over

Brad Schimmel

the

Dan Schaefer

recently and it's an it's an ad that's on abortion rights.

Yeah.

And it features his two adopted adult daughters.

Yes.

And it also, you know, kind of talks about the issue and about like where Wisconsinites stand on

Narrator

it.

Dan Schaefer

Yeah.

And he brings up

a referendum.

So I have, I have multiple issues with this ad and we can kind of go through it as, as we take a look at it here.

But, but which, which piece of it did you want to start with?

Greg Bach

Well, I want to listen to the

Dan Schaefer

clip.

Greg Bach

Let's listen to the clip.

So everyone can hear the ad themselves.

This is, it opens with the adopted daughters of Brad Schimmel and they're talking about, they're giving their story.

Very, very common in political campaigns.

Cal, please play that for me.

Mackenzie and Haley Schimmel

Our birth moms were young.

Being pregnant at 18, I wouldn't know what to do.

And that's when our mom and dad adopted us.

Brad Schimmel

I can't imagine facing that decision.

Mackenzie and Haley are my greatest blessings.

I'm personally grateful for the choice their birth mothers made.

But a judge's job is to apply the law, not make the law.

The people of Wisconsin.

through referendum or their elected representatives should decide the question of abortion.

I'm Brad Schimmel and I will respect the will of the people.

Greg Bach

Okay.

So that is the ad running from the, that is, that is a Schimmel ad that is not a PAC ad that it comes from the Schimmel campaign.

And when I heard that, there's just a whole host of things that pop out for me personally that I have issues with.

But Dan, I wanted to start with you.

Where does it hit with you first and foremost?

Dan Schaefer

Well, first and foremost,

So there's obviously a couple things that we're going to talk about this.

But first and foremost, what bothers me about this is just coming from the perspective of a parent.

You have two kids.

Greg Bach

And I have

Dan Schaefer

two kids.

And I think putting your own kids in a political ad is a real problem to me.

And I think Republicans do this.

Democrats do it.

People always will use their their kids in ads.

I hate when they do this.

Yeah, it really bothers me.

I really think they should leave your your kids out of it.

I think it's a poor decision as a candidate to put to put your kids into that position to be on ads statewide to, you know, make them part of your because I think it's there's a couple problems with that.

I think it is inappropriate.

for one, to just use your own children to make a political point.

And I think it is also kind of exploitative of them to include them in certain ads if you're making a certain point.

And I think that you should just keep the kids out of it.

Like, I just think you should keep your kids out of this.

And I think we've seen, you know, Elon Musk bringing his son to these, you know, kind of public...

meetings

Brad Schimmel

and

Dan Schaefer

press conferences and things like that.

You know, I think this is just kind of like generally a debate, like, you know, you see, you know, new mothers who are congresspeople or state representatives or whatever nursing their child on the, you know, legislative floor

Greg Bach

or

Dan Schaefer

whatever it might be.

And, but I just think it, to me, it crosses the line when you put them in an ad.

And I think that is a real problem.

And I think

And I don't care if it is a like I said Democrats do this Republicans do this whatever and I think it as a parent it bothers me to see people put their own kids in ads

Greg Bach

They're I mean they're being used for fodder.

They're being used to appeal to a certain demographic of individuals who if the kids are a part of it it can almost be like well his kids seem nice and he seems like a nice guy and now I know him and

I am not, you know, I, I'm not huge on using kids.

If the kids are of more of an adult age, that it depends on what they're saying.

But in this ad, it really, it bothered me because it just sort of scatter shot everything.

It's like, okay, you've got the story of the two girls.

It's a great story.

The shimmels found two girls who needed a home.

The mothers wanted to give them for adoption.

That's beautiful.

That's the great thing about having the choice to do that in America.

Cool.

That's not everybody's opportunity.

That's not everybody's choice.

And that's not everybody's situation.

It made it seem like, because he's told the story before, it made it seem like they swooped in to these two mothers who are going to just give up and abort their babies late in their terms.

And they were going to say like, these will take your children and they're the, they're the heaven sent angels.

I don't know if that's true or not.

Right.

But what I do know is that on the topic of abortion,

He then says we need to talk to that.

We need to listen to the will of the people.

Okay How do we do that?

That's the problem because of what he says right right

Dan Schaefer

and And again with the jit with just putting your kids in ads and I

I'd be interested if our listeners or

Brad Schimmel

have some thoughts on this.

Because

Dan Schaefer

I know we have parents in the listening audience.

And just what do you think of putting your children in political ads?

I found myself in a statewide political ad last year.

Really?

Yes.

So I interviewed Tammy Baldwin last year, and I asked her a question about her thoughts on the Biden presidency.

This was when Biden was still running.

And that clip was...

pulled by the Huvdy campaign and put into a statewide ad with like the scary graphics and like the doom voice and Tabby

Brad Schimmel

Baldwin talks to people

Dan Schaefer

blah blah blah you know and so I started getting feedback from people that I hadn't heard from in forever yeah because the ad was running statewide and it was me asking a question and it was Senator Baldwin answering it and if I'm getting that type of feedback just from like being a guy

put into an ad, I cannot imagine you're putting your children in that position because you're going to get some negative feedback.

You're going to get some pushback.

You are going to put your own kids who you want to protect and make sure they are safe.

And I know they are adult children.

It may be a great story.

It may have been their idea to be in the ad.

I have no idea.

I don't know.

I just don't think it's appropriate to be putting your kids in ads.

And then when I criticize,

Republican politicians, Democratic politicians, whatever it might be, I always want to leave their personal lives out of it.

I've made this point, there was the story circulating about Elon Musk and some sort of pregnancy that was happening.

A bunch of liberals were gonna pounce on it and whatever.

I don't care.

I don't care about these people's personal lives, have 70 kids, get 40 divorces.

I don't care.

It's not.

it's not relevant to me.

It's a personal issue.

But then when you're pulling your own children into a political ad and putting them in a position where they could get some sort of reaction on

Greg Bach

a

Dan Schaefer

statewide basis, they're visually there at the beginning of the

Greg Bach

ad.

Dan Schaefer

I just find it to be really inappropriate and kind of exploitative and kind of just gross.

It just makes me feel gross to even think about putting my kids in that type of position.

Greg Bach

Well, we're going to turn that question to the audience here, which I see you on the line.

I'm going to ask you to hold until we get back from the break because we're about to hit a break.

How do you feel about seeing kids in political ads?

Give us a call 855-752-4842-855-757 or leave a comment on the live stream we are on Facebook, YouTube or X.

I just said X my gosh on Twitter.

Jane's going to kill me.

Uh, don't go anywhere.

You were listening to Greg Bach and Dan Schaefer hosting for you, Matt and air on air in place of Jane, Matt and air on the civic media radio network.

Stay close.

Greg Box

Good morning and welcome back to Matt and air on air.

My name is Greg box sitting in for Jane Matt and air who is out today But we're returning on Monday across from me.

I have my friend my pal my co-worker political editor of civic media and founder of the

multi award winning recap population area.

Dan Schaefer here with

Dan Schaefer

Greg.

Here we are.

We're recombobulating on a Friday.

Greg Box

We're recombobulating the Friday and we're, I'm about to talk about something I really, really love, which is baseball is back.

Spring training is here.

The 2025 brewers spring training continues.

They are, their schedule continues this weekend with the brewers taking on the Texas Rangers this Saturday, March 1st at 2pm.

And you can listen to the game at several of your favorite civic media.

Brewers affiliates, which includes W R C E in Richland center, W I S S and Oshkosh and W B Z H in Hayward.

So listen to some brewers, kickback, enjoy the game.

It's absolutely wonderful.

Dan Schaefer

Can

Greg Box

listen on to civic media network.

Dan Schaefer

How

Greg Box

about that?

I love baseball on the radio, my friend.

Dan Schaefer

I

Greg Box

just, I love listening to a game when I'm driving to Milwaukee and just, you can just kick back and it will be interesting this season to hear a new main

Dan Schaefer

voice if you

Greg Box

will.

But, but

He's in our heart, Mr. Bob Buker is forever.

If you're just joining us, we are talking about an ad that dropped from the Brad Shimmel campaign and it involved his daughters telling their story of adoption.

And it's a, it's a beautiful story.

It's a wonderful story.

We all support these kinds of stories.

Dan Shaver brought it to my attention and we were talking about the fact of, do you like seeing children being used in ads?

And just to give you a brief overview, Dan, you are not in favor.

And that is,

regardless of party.

So that's what we want

Dan Schaefer

to

Greg Box

know.

If you disagree with everything else we talk about, if you vote differently than we vote,

Dan Schaefer

on this matter, how do you feel?

And I can see both sides of it.

I've talked to other parents about this and and other people who are like engaged in politics I was I was texting with Kate Duffy from motherhood for good about this See what she thought about it and I think there are many different perspectives And I think you know there are certain politicians who were just like want to have their kids You know they're part of their lives so they're gonna be part of their public lives as well as their private lives But I think to me it to me it crosses a line to put them in an in an advert

that's going to be running statewide.

If you're standing in front of your office saying, hey, I'm celebrating being sworn in today, or whatever, that's a little bit different.

But I think when you're putting people in ads that are running statewide or running all over the place, that have millions of dollars behind them,

I just find it to be inappropriate.

I find it to be inappropriate when Republicans do this.

I find it to be inappropriate when Democrats do this.

Just leave the kids out of it.

Greg Box

Yeah.

Well, let's hear from the people on the phone.

We got people waiting for us on the phone line.

I really appreciate your patience.

Jean, remote Claire.

Jean, what do you say about a topic like this?

Do you agree with Dan or are you more of like, eh, it's fine.

Jean from Eau Claire (caller)

Look at all the circumstances of this ad.

You know, we got a guy here who doesn't support, you know, daycare, you know, uh, you know,

from opting for public schools, child labor laws.

And, you know, we got this guy who's got a really abhorrent history.

And I really think it's the exploitation of adopted children.

And there have been children that I've known and worked with whose parents say to them, you're just lucky I adopted you.

You're just lucky.

And puts them in a category that they are different.

from normal families in a negative way.

So there's a lot of things with this that isn't pretty.

So thank you very much for taking my call.

And I think it's exploitation of children.

It's ridiculous, especially with this issue.

Have a great day, guys.

Greg Box

You too.

You too, Jeannie.

Thanks, Jeannie.

Thanks for calling.

We appreciate it.

I, as I said before, I have less of a problem with it, depending on the situation.

My big thing is using

your children to talk about the abortion issue, and then you saying, I'm going to listen to the people.

And if the people want a referendum, which we don't do, or through the representative of democracy, which is controlled by Republicans who will not vote for this.

it leaves you in this weird chasm of like, well, what did I just watch?

Like for me, you were more upset about it.

I was more like, this ad is deception.

And it makes it seem like you don't know the process of the state of Wisconsin.

So why would I vote for you in the first place?

Dan Schaefer

It offended me on an emotional level, obviously.

And it also offended me as like a political, from a level of like political analysis, because...

basically like the Republicans are trying to have it, but have it both ways.

They're playing both sides of the issue here.

And they've been doing this for the last several years when Ron Johnson was, uh, was running for reelection in 2022.

This was his platform too, to say like, Hey, let's have a referendum and let's let voters decide.

And then, uh, Tony Evers comes back and says, okay.

We'll have a referendum and the Robin Voss says, no, we're not doing a referendum.

And so it's just this like circular run around that Wisconsin Republicans are putting people through to just be completely manipulative on the issue and preying on the fact that like.

You know, it sounds nice.

It sounds nice to have a referendum on an issue, but it's not a thing.

And they themselves are blocking any action towards having statewide referenda on any issue, not just this issue, but this issue, but any issue.

Greg Box

Exactly.

And that's the part that really grinds my gears more than anything else.

But Cassandra's been holding in New London.

Cassandra, what's say you?

Cassandra?

Oh, there you are.

Cassandra from New London (caller)

I'm here.

Hi.

So I have a couple different ways of looking at this.

I agree.

I don't think it's great.

I mean, if they have the choice and they wanted to get involved, that's one thing.

I also think that the irony of this ad is incredible.

The fact that he brings up, oh, their mom made this choice, this amazing choice.

And it's like, you keep saying choice, but you don't know what it means.

It's a great

Dan Schaefer

point.

Cassandra from New London (caller)

Yeah.

I have a friend who is adopted and she was adopted into a lovely family.

They had money to adopt a child.

There are millions of people throughout this country who can't afford to adopt children.

And we kind of ignore that fact.

And I just think it's totally out of touch.

And the fact that he brings up, hey, we want the people to vote on this and have a referendum.

Well, you need to talk to your buddy Robin Voss.

Greg Box

Yeah.

Absolutely.

Yeah.

Thank you, Cassandra, for calling.

I really appreciate it.

I think that's the thing is, like, there is so much happening with this ad that is both, like, from a parent's side can be offensive and also just from a procedural side, you're like, yeah.

Who are you?

You are trained in the law.

You should know this.

And this isn't your first go around.

It's like you wake up today and be like, I'm going to run for Supreme Court.

You've held jobs in the law before.

You know how Wisconsin works.

Dan Schaefer

And

Greg Box

we got some more phone calls waiting on the line here.

We're going to keep talking about this.

And we're also going to be talking about Oscar time.

Yeah, that's right.

Oscar time, baby.

Don't go away.

We're going to keep this conversation going.

Ann and Jim, I see you.

Don't hang up.

We're going to be back in a little bit.

Don't go anywhere.

You're listening to Dan Schaefer, Calvin, myself, Greg Box, filling in for Jane McNair and the Civic Media Radio Network.

See you soon.

Greg Box (host)

Good morning.

Welcome back to Madden Air on Air.

My name is Greg Box, sitting in for Jane Madden Air, who is out today, but we will be returning next week on Monday.

I've got sitting across from me the political editor of Civic Media, Dan Schaefer, spending the next

Half an hour with me as well as sweet Calbee, Caltini, the Calvinator on the boards.

And we are talking about political ads specifically using your children in political ads.

How do you fall on it?

Yes or no?

Maybe in the middle.

Does it bother you at all?

You can call us 855-752-4842-855-75 Civic.

Drop a comment on the live stream.

We are currently live streaming on Facebook.

YouTube and Twitter.

Yeah, I called it the other name for it.

Luckily, no one records this show.

So Jane will never find out.

Really quick though, if you do miss the show, it's easy to catch up with this show with.

Maggie Dawn show, Earl Ingram show, and you record the Reconpopulation Minute as well.

That's right.

And you can access all of this information by going to civicmedia.us, click on shows, and you can see all the shows that are going on.

Click on a show that you like or you want to discover, and you can find up to 100 episodes going back.

Download those episodes, listen to them, or if you want to take us wherever you go, and it's great.

It's wonderful.

You can also go to your favorite podcast distribution center of choice.

And you can subscribe to a show as a podcast.

This show, Matt and Aaron air comes to you twice a day in the form of the first hour, the second hour and actually a third with this shouldn't be a thing, which we'll talk more about the moment.

That's right.

Every, every day at 1150, but you can listen to those shows as well and kind of have a back catalog.

So go to civicmedia.us, click shows, download episodes, download us a podcast, give us a five star rating.

You feel like we've deserved it.

I mean, I feel like we're doing a good work here.

Do you feel like that?

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

I think so.

I would give you a

Greg Box (host)

10 out of five star rating if I could.

My goodness.

And my, I would want to share some of those stars with other people because I'm a communist.

But back to what we were talking about before, Brad Schimel's campaign has dropped an ad and in the ad is his adopted daughters.

He has two adopted daughters telling their story about how they came into the Schimel's lives.

And it's a beautiful story.

I mean, I'm all for it.

I'm all for adoption.

I think everyone's for adoption.

Hopefully if you're not, you have some explaining to do.

But it doesn't say right with you, Dan.

And we've got some callers on the line, but just, yeah, I'll just quickly reiterate my point.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Yeah.

I think it's a, you know, it makes me uncomfortable to see, uh, people use their own kids in political ads.

It's one, obviously your, your politics are going to be informed by your own situation.

Obviously Brad Schimmel, you know, having adopted two daughters, that is going to.

Inform his politics.

I'm a father.

That informs my politics too.

But to take the step to put them in a political add, I think it, I think is inappropriate.

Okay.

Greg Box (host)

Uh, we had some thoughts on the live stream as well.

Tony listening up north said, I do not like kids and ads at all, which is understandable.

I think that I, I get that.

I'm, I'm sort of falling in the middle.

It depends on the situation, but I completely understand where you're coming from.

And Cassandra just says, you stole my line, 10 out of five stars.

We're sorry.

We'll never do that again.

We have some people sitting on the phone for us.

We wait and patiently and in Chippewa Falls.

Anne, how do you feel about the situation?

Yay or nay?

Anne from Chippewa Falls (caller)

Well, I say nay because I feel once again, this new Republican party, they call themselves MAGA.

It's all about blame and shame to

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

women

Anne from Chippewa Falls (caller)

that aren't able to give up their children.

And if Wisconsin wants more workforce from young people,

They're going to be running to Minnesota because they don't have that over there.

They have rights still in Minnesota.

So Brad Schimel needs to watch out what he says about women because I feel like women should have a choice with their own bodies and it should be a private choice.

Men especially should keep their nose out of women's health care.

So that's the way I feel.

I think it's a game with Brad Schimel.

And I think he's doing this purposefully to degrade women that aren't able to give their babies up.

So that's where I stand with that whole ad.

Thank

Greg Box (host)

you.

Thank you, Anne, for calling in.

We appreciate hearing from you as always.

Yeah.

I mean, that's how I feel about the ad in general.

It's a lot of confusing feelings, a lot of confusing points and doesn't really focus on the main problem, which is, I mean,

Most of America believes that abortion access is something that's a fundamental right.

You should have access to health care to that procedure.

If you need it, Wisconsin believes in that.

Kansas voted to protect abortion rights.

When Kansas votes for it, come on, man.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

And just listen to the story that was on your show a couple days ago.

Greg Box (host)

Yes.

Oh my God.

So on Tuesday, we spoke with Dr. Kristen Lyrely and she brought, I don't know if she's a colleague, but something she's worked with who went through a horrific pregnancy.

There were problems and it was one of those situations where she couldn't be given the access to abortion that she needed because of the temporary ban on the abortion law.

Go back, listen to it, go to civicmedia.us, go to shows.

It's just called Laurel story.

Listen to it.

It's heavy.

It is on

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

the YouTube channel too.

So yeah.

Greg Box (host)

Yeah.

So it's a lot.

This is what women go through.

And I'm saying that as a man and I get it.

And I'm, I'm making, I'm making no, I'm not telling anybody what to do with their bodies, but, and listening to her talk, tell her story.

It is not an outlier, which we were accused of showing.

Someone called her an outlier, which I was like, that's a human.

That's an outlier.

But this story has been happening all over the country.

Check out Texas, but.

Um, yeah, I, the, the, the under, the underlying, the subtext of the, uh, I can see where Anna's coming from as well.

Jim from Brookfield, you've been very, very patient.

What say you on the issue?

Yay or nay, kids in political ads.

Jim from Brookfield (caller)

They are the kids in political ads.

So good Friday, Dan and, and, um, Greg and Calvin as a father of two wonderful girls, I would never use them politically.

And I don't, um, agree with anybody who does put their own kids in political ads.

for two reasons.

One, I think that the child or the individual is exploited.

And number two, too often it's used as political cover.

Now clearly in the Brad Schimmel ad that those two girls are being exploited.

You know, Schimmel never comes out really and says how he stands on the issue.

He just said that he swept in 11th hour and saved these, you know, these wonderful girls, more power to them and great, but he never takes a stand on the issue and sort of misleads.

you know, the audience that, you know, it's up to the public to decide, you know, up to the citizens to decide their own issues.

That's not the case.

We know that Brad Schimmel, you know, would vote in a minute.

to, you know, outlaw abortion in the state of Wisconsin.

I mean, the underlying vibe is there.

So I think those girls are being exploited.

I think it's wrong.

And then also if they're not really directly ads, but often politicians use their own children for political cover.

And I can only reference back a few years or maybe a several years ago, the Milwaukee mayor, John Norquist Democrat, you know, he was.

found that he was having an affair with a Milwaukee City, Milwaukee intern, you know, or an employee.

And the first time he faced the public, you know, the press to answer questions, allegations to address the issue, he was holding his young daughter in his arms.

Now, why on earth would anybody need to do that unless they are clearly using them as a shield?

And I get very frustrated, although it's not, like I say, a direct ad, but children are used as political cover.

And I don't think much of anybody from any party

Greg Box (host)

who

Jim from Brookfield (caller)

does that.

And I feel sad when they're exploited.

I'm going to use this political cover.

Greg Box (host)

Thank you so much, Jim.

Yeah, it seems to be, I mean, I'm looking at the text line here right now.

There's a lot of people who do agree with you, Dan.

They just, they don't like seeing it.

As someone who's worked in political campaigns, I know it's hard to not do it.

the team will want to push that because they want, they want you to look.

It did to the point where if you didn't, they'd be like, well, where's this family?

You know what I mean?

They want to look relatable, right?

Yeah, and I just saw a text here that really hit with me from Carol in Waukesha says, as someone who has adopted herself, I feel Schimmel is using his daughters as a prop.

I'm not suggesting he didn't love them, but it seems like he's using the decision to adopt to advance his campaign.

at their expense.

And I mean, that's perfectly reasonable.

Jake from Madison says, I also note that Schimmel keeps using the word choice when talking about the birth parent giving up the kids for adoption, but Brad Schimmel wouldn't allow for a choice as it stands today.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Yeah.

Greg Box (host)

There's

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

like this series of contradictions

Greg Box (host)

that

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

are in this ad.

Greg Box (host)

And you can go, and you can go back and listen to him.

He fully supports the 1849 ban.

He calls it, he asked where the flaw is.

He is not a person who is going to listen to the people of Wisconsin.

I'm sorry.

Everyone had a problem with justice.

Jenna prose saying that the maps were rigged and they lost their minds and their hair was on fire.

This man has gone on record multiple times talking about abortion.

And I said it on this show.

that if abortion comes before the Wisconsin Supreme Court, if those same people who said that Justice Janet should recuse herself because of calling the maps rigged, if they don't call for him to recuse himself, their hypocrisy is so, so visible and so disgusting.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Yeah, and it, and I'm sure certainly don't expect them.

It's just all to the ends of power too, right?

But let me ask you this, Greg, if this was...

an ad on a different topic.

If it was, let's just say, I don't know, something having to do with history as a judge or history as attorney general or something like that.

If it wasn't specific to this topic, would you have as much of a problem with it?

Greg Box (host)

If it was something, you'd have to be the- I guess

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

all the context matters,

Greg Box (host)

right?

Yeah, and with this, with this,

Ad, I have a problem with it.

I don't disagree with what you're saying.

I don't disagree with what Carol from Waukesha is saying.

Cassandra actually says it really well on the live stream.

It's one thing to humanize the candidate, which is what you see in pictures and some ads.

It's another thing to manipulate voters with kids.

Yes, if you're using your children to manipulate votes beyond just the like, hey, I'm a good guy or a good lady.

Here's my family.

Here's my kids.

Yes, I have a problem with that.

And then opening up with them and the one girl saying,

If I was 18 years old and had a child, I wouldn't know what to do.

Understandable.

There's a lot of scared young women out there who are in these situations who are younger than that.

But unfortunately we have laws in place now that tell them they don't have a choice.

Their worst fears might come true in whether it's a health reason or having being a 15 year old giving birth to a baby.

So like I said before.

I love the story.

It's wonderful they were adopted.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

We should have more policies that make it more friendly for people to adopt.

We should be a more pro family, state, country, whatever.

Greg Box (host)

Pro life should mean life, not just one form of life.

Cindy from Appletons on the line right now, Cindy, what say you?

Cindy from Appleton (caller)

Well, I have two things.

First of all, I don't think children should be used.

I don't think wives should be used too much.

I would say conflicts of interest.

Let's put it that way.

Okay.

And the second thing I'd like to say is today is National Black Outspeak Economic Day, which is asking everyone in this country to unite and not buy anything corporate today.

Don't buy shopping unless it's a mom-and-pop.

Okay.

I'm already well on my way.

All

Greg Box (host)

right.

Well, thank you very much for calling in, Cindy.

It's a hard line to walk with the family.

But I think, as Sandra says it perfectly, if you're humanizing yourself, that's fine.

I get that.

And you should do it if you want to.

If the kids are comfortable with it, great.

But if we're using those children to manipulate a topic such as this, I understand where you, Dan, and everyone else who was called and texted is getting upset about it because this is such a bigger, deeper discussion than just saying, well, I have two wonderful daughters.

Isn't that great?

And by the way, I'll listen to the people if you want to vote in referendum.

It's like, no, we can't

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

talk to Robin Voss.

Yes.

And he also says, I saw the tweet when he put this ad out on the Twitter timeline saying, a judge's job is to apply the law, not make the law.

In that ad, he proposes a way to make the law in version of a referendum.

You don't see the obvious inherent contradiction with that.

It's so absurd.

Greg Box (host)

I'd also go back and listen to yesterday's show.

We had Judge Susan Crawford on who had some really wonderful things to say about what she's doing with her campaign and how she's dealing with all this major campaign financing coming from out of state from one Elon Musk, but

We're going to leave it there.

I want to thank everyone for calling in and texting in.

We got one more segment with Dan, then he's got to go boo.

Stay forever.

Now he's got to get out of here and go to an event.

But when we come back, we're going to be using

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Crawford's having an event at Marquette University

Greg Box (host)

Law

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

School today.

That's right.

I'm going to go check that out.

Greg Box (host)

There you go.

Teller Matt Narenair says hello.

I will.

But don't go anywhere.

Stay close.

Get something to eat.

Take a snack.

Get some hydration in you.

Because when we come back, we're talking about Oscars.

But more importantly, we're talking about the host of the Oscars, the host, who's one of the greatest humans on earth, Mr. Conan O'Brien.

Don't go anywhere.

I'm Greg Box, sitting in front of Jay Mattenare.

I got Dan Shaver here.

Sweet Calbee on the boards.

You're listening to Mattenare on the Civic Media Radio Network.

Stay close.

You're amazing.

Let no one tell you differently.

Greg Bach (host)

Good, good morning.

Welcome back to Matt and air on air.

My name is Greg Bach, filling in for Jane Matt and air who is out today, but we'll be returning next week.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

hey, you can throw us a couple bucks and help us do more.

Give some shekels and see what's happening.

Greg Bach (host)

That's right.

We were talking about political asthma and we're getting, you know, all.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Getting all worked

Greg Bach (host)

up open our feels about that.

We're gonna switch gears right now We're gonna talk about hooray for Hollywood this Sunday is the 97th Oscars, I believe about that.

Yeah.

Wow, that's old and I won't lie damn I will not lie at all I don't really have that big of an interest in what's going on with the Oscars this year the movie some of them I've seen some of them I haven't that's nothing new for me.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Yeah,

Greg Bach (host)

I think I've seen

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

one

I think if the ones now, I think I saw Dune too.

Yeah.

Greg Bach (host)

That was it.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

If Timothée Chalamet

Greg Bach (host)

wins.

Great.

If, you know, I don't want to see that one.

If Edward Norton wins for his role.

Great.

Kudos to them.

Yeah.

But what we're really talking about is the most important thing, Dan.

That's right.

Is the host of said Oscars, Mr. Conan Coco O'Brien,

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

the legend Conan O'Brien,

Greg Bach (host)

the

The, if Mount Rushmore had five faces, I'd put Conan on all five faces.

10 out of five stars for Conan.

He is one of my, my favorite people in comedy.

One of the most important figures and he's going to, is the recipient of this year's Mark Twain prize for American

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

deserving.

Greg Bach (host)

Yeah.

Yeah.

Way overdue, but he's coming into the fold and he's taking control.

How do you feel about that?

I'm so excited.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Yeah.

Conan's my guy.

Greg Bach (host)

Yeah.

I mean,

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

I think it is, I wonder if it is, you know, a certain generational thing

Greg Bach (host)

where

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

if you grow up at a certain time, like, like the Conan late night when I was up past my bedtime, when I was in high school, sneaking away to watch Conan, like that was the best.

Greg Bach (host)

New York Conan?

New York Conan.

Yeah,

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

absolutely.

In so many ways, informed my comedic sensibilities and my world comedic worldview

Greg Bach (host)

and

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

all of that.

And just like the way he, it will be kind of this, like he'll have this kind of intellectual energy to it, but then complete absurdity.

And that is exactly my sweet

Greg Bach (host)

spot for comedy.

Like to me, Conan is the kind of guy who will come out and recite like.

the lines of some of the greatest movies ever, but he'll be wearing a diaper and everyone will love it.

Cause you're like, that makes sense.

Cause it's coded.

There's the, the spectrum of, of influence from him is everywhere.

He comes from the most, he comes from the most, you know, kind of like comedial art day from, from hundreds of years ago to just maybe like a popcorn commercial that caught his fancy.

If it's funny, it works.

And he likes it.

And, and that's sort of open-mindedness.

is not just in his comedy, but who he is as a person and how he interacts with people, whether it's him interviewing on his podcast or just interacting with people.

His assistant says that she has to pull him off of people all the time when he needs to be somewhere, cause he just wants to talk.

And that kind of good, fun, sweet.

energy and that like, you know, that real like humane sense of being, he's got like this big hearted.

Yes.

Yeah.

Being in a room of so many egos.

Yeah.

It's that thing of like, I want to see how many celebrities will want to laugh at what he says, but we'll feel like, well, I can't laugh at that.

Yeah.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Well, and he will take somebody down, but he's not in a way that's mean spirited either.

You know,

Greg Bach (host)

he will take him.

He will take someone down, but before they fall on the ground, he'll fall under them because that's right.

He is always

the butt of the joke.

And I think that he is going to bring a lightness to the Oscars that is going to be very fun.

And I feel, I'd say right now, today I make the claim.

If he does a good job, he's going to be like a Billy Crystal or a Steve Martin or a Bob Hope where he's coming back because he's just reliable, he's fun, relatable.

Nobody dislikes Conan.

I'm sorry.

If you dislike Conan, there's something wrong with you.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

Yeah.

And right now he's got, I think my favorite podcast right now too.

And just, you know, there's so many things that he did.

And the show that he did on HBO, the travel stuff that he does is just absolutely hysterical.

I'm so excited for him to have this opportunity to host this.

Like, you know, you go back to, I'm thinking like my two favorite comedians, late night hosts, whatever it is, are Conan O'Brien and John Stewart.

Those are the pillars of my favorites growing up.

Growing up and watching Conan late at night or watching The Daily Show every night, that was formative, central type of stuff for me.

Greg Bach (host)

And that's how I feel too, watching those.

Listen to my older cousins talk about the early days of Letterman, which I was too little to hear.

but we got that with Conan when he took over that slot.

Cause it was just as absurd, just as weird, but had a little more heart too.

It was a little, he was Letterman's and he's nice now, but he wasn't

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

always a

Greg Bach (host)

nice guy.

Cause Sandra on the live stream says, I love Conan.

It's so wonderful to see him and have success after he got the shaft from NBC and Leno.

Yep.

That's a whole other story to talk about for hours.

But yes, this Sunday we're going to be tuned in.

in moments or I might catch him on the, like the replays.

I don't know if I want to watch all 90 hours of it, but I cannot wait for Mr. Conan O'Brien to dominate the Oscars.

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

I'm sure I'm so excited.

Like the opening monologue.

Oh my gosh.

Yes.

Greg Bach (host)

It's

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

just, it's just going to be

Greg Bach (host)

absolutely appointment feeling.

Yes.

And he takes it seriously.

He takes this so, so seriously.

So, you know, every joke that's picked is the shining gem.

That's going to be the best joke there is because he will, he will give you nothing less.

So,

We'll maybe talk about this on Monday from

Dan Schaefer (political editor)

a comedian standpoint Greg is he just like So high above everybody else like kind of formative for every comedian of his generation

Greg Bach (host)

I think so.

Yeah, even for stand-ups to like the stand-ups adore him so much and he doors stand up So yeah, we'll probably talk about this on Monday.

We'll know what you think about this But we're looking forward to the Oscars this this this Sunday coming up Dan.

Thank you so much for being here.

Appreciate you recombobulating with us as always enjoy the event with just judge Crawford

Tell Mr. Mosley, not Judge Mosley, we say hi.

Folks, when we come back, we're going to be talking about all the best squirrels.

All those squirrels out there.

Don't go far.

Stay close.

You're listening to Matt Nair on air on the Civic Media Radio Network.
