Although I have to say, I feel bad for you guys.

has any powers with the rain or the weather, I mean, I've talked to weathermen.

It's like

bizarre.

Every Wednesday.

But Marianne, and that's, that interacts with the city band concert is on Wednesday as well.

Okay.

So, and that's, we need a good Wednesday, but this is it.

I think

It's just been tough, but you are rain or shine.

We are rain or shine.

Johnny said we must cancel it last night.

I'm like, nope.

No, the only reason we will cancel is severe weather,

like lightning

type

stuff.

Cause it's not safe for anyone to be there, vendors or the community.

So we will, you also, that's a, is that a three or four hour thing?

The market goes from three o'clock to five or to eight o'clock excuse me.

So.

Five hours.

Sell them, does it rain that long in Green Bay?

Correct.

Whereas the band concert is one hour.

Oh.

You know what I mean?

Yeah.

So sometimes it rains pretty heavy at four or three or four.

Yeah.

By seven o'clock it's nicer.

Or

there's breaks.

And

it's sunny

because all of a sudden then we'll see the people.

We'll see the Panchos and the umbrellas.

People have their

week routine.

Well, it's not like you're out at a fairground.

It's true.

People could always duck into the bars and the different things around there.

Absolutely.

Yeah.

There's

stores to go into and that kind of thing.

And there's not a lot of mud.

You're in the middle of

the street.

You do a good job.

That's a very, very successful market.

It

is, 22 years and running.

Wow, that's awesome.

Well, what do you want to talk about today, Mary?

The biggest event of the year, right?

Absolutely.

Would you say

this

is

kind of a little thing going on Friday?

This is the biggest event of the year, isn't it, downtown?

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

With

60,000?

Yeah, we get anywhere from 40 to 60, yep.

Wow.

Yeah.

And obviously peak of that attendance is the fireworks are leading up to the...

the fireworks,

but

it's the largest fireworks show in Northeast Wisconsin.

So we're really proud of that.

Challenge is always getting people to come before the fireworks.

And you kick it off.

But they do.

They do.

And they do.

And we'll talk about some of the things.

I really like some of the things that you've moved because you've responded to the market, especially the Santa Max thing.

But why don't you tell our listeners?

Fire over the Fox festival foods fire over the Fox happening this Friday, July 4th kicks off at 3 o'clock The street will be closed at 7 30 in the morning.

So this is the Dalsman Street Main Street Bridge, whatever you want to call it these days Braynitsky Bridge.

I think it has three names, right?

Well, are you closing or is it just broke

again?

It will be completely shut down beginning at 7 30 in the morning on Friday

July 4th.

So yeah, I mean, a lot of the things happening with this event kind of go without saying, right?

We're going to have great food.

We're going to have live music.

We're going to have fireworks.

But we have a couple of really cool new things this year.

And Jim alluded to it, we had the Santa Max Latin stage.

So this is year three for that stage.

And we're so grateful to Santa Max for stepping up to sponsor that again.

This stage has grown so much in popularity that it is it last year.

It kind of started to out out.

What's the word overflow?

It's space in Light Park.

And so this year our team really decided.

To give that stage a little more room, we moved it now to the east side of the bridge.

I'm pointing as if

people are seeing me.

The east side of the bridge, right out from the Hampton Inn.

So kind of that intersection of Main Street

and the

KI Convention Center.

Yeah, literally

right behind us.

So that stage will have plenty of space, an amazing lineup there, starting at 3.30, going until 9.30, really awesome Latin bands

hitting that stage.

That's

fantastic.

We had a Latin singer in here on Friday, it was just cool.

It was just fun, it was really great.

The music always makes you smile.

Absolutely, exactly.

It's fun music.

Back

in the

day, I did Zumba,

which was very

Latin heavy, and it

I came out of that class with the biggest smile on my face all the time.

It was so much fun.

I think

that a

West Side Y doesn't have that anymore.

Oh, the West Side Y.

Yeah, was that the West Side Y?

That's the old Lady of Charity place, right?

Oh, okay, way over there.

Oh, okay.

But I used to play basketball at the other one.

And every Saturday morning, we'd have to go knock on a nun's house to give us the basketball and the

keys.

Terrifying, I'm sure.

It was crazy.

Fun times.

But, Mary, what a huge event this is.

And you were talking about the biggest one in Northeast Wisconsin.

Talk about the magnitude of this for downtown Green Bay.

This is huge.

I mean, even for our team, this is a massive undertaking, obviously, a full year of planning.

But it takes up really both sides of the bridge here, a little bit of the Broadway district.

certainly Light Park, Donald Driver Way area, Neville Museum parking lot.

And then it goes all the way across the bridge to the east side of the river as well.

As we mentioned where the Santa Max Latin stage is, we also utilize city deck.

And honestly, we also utilize the river.

Waterboard Warriors, who will be back again this year, so popular for them to do their downtown

show.

It used to be there was like one area.

It's like, here's a rugby.

Now,

I mean, this is just like,

it's, it's

incredible.

Me and Murph and Katie here, we'd be down on, you know, Fourth of July morning downtown Green Bay.

There'd be a few people walking in later, get a few more people, but now it's like big time.

from early on, isn't it?

Absolutely.

Yeah.

The Santa max stage is one of five music stages that we'll

have

for this event.

So we have the festival foods main stage, which is right in light park.

Uh, people know and love Johnny wad who usually closes out that, uh, always brings a big crowd out.

Um,

he's a huge supportive downtown too.

That guy, he, all you wait till he talks.

Yeah.

He's, he's one of my

favorites.

I'm usually slinging beers in a beer

tent when he's on

stage.

So I'm glad to hear that he loves being here.

We also, we're on Broadway is bringing one of our Levitt stages.

We usually do the Sunday concert series,

the

Levitt Amp Music Series.

We're bringing one of those stages into this event as well.

That'll be in the Neville Public Museum's parking lot.

That'll be kicking off at four o'clock.

We have the family stage, which is also in Light Park.

So this is Mischief and Magic, Miller and Mike doing back to back shows the entire night.

So that's a kid's kind of focus.

It is, absolutely.

I think parents need to know that this, I mean,

what kid doesn't like fireworks, what parent doesn't like fireworks.

But to come down there and enjoy that kids stage, that's a really, really good time.

Absolutely.

And now we have the added amenities from the Green Bay Parks Department

that are

in Light Park as well with some of the cool kids stuff.

We will have an inflatable water slide there.

We have the bounce houses located there.

So this is...

as you can assume and imagine 100% kid friendly.

You know when people don't realize if they don't know downtown Green Bay though, and Lake Park, I mean you revitalized Lake Park, I mean that was like nothing, but I mean there aren't many places where you're so close to the hub of downtown for whatever that's worth or whatever, and you got this huge park

within walking

distance.

That's a big green space for a downtown.

four acres.

Yeah.

And the other thing is you can see the water

right

on the water.

It's pretty incredible.

It's tough to compete with, you know, title towns sometimes, but we've got water.

Right.

And I think water is cool.

Absolutely.

And now as we start to see the next phases of shipyard as well

as the

light to have another water, water, waterfront park that has amazing green space

is going to be cool.

Cool piles.

That's good.

We're out there a little bit, but that's going to be right.

That's going to be cool too.

So I mean, any, you look at

I mean, Chicago, but the lakefront, that's where everything is happening down there.

Absolutely.

And you look at the economic right across the way from there.

I mean, it's unbelievable what happened down there.

Downtown

Cream Bay is so truly special.

And then you add, obviously, the amazing elements of this event, but it ending with those awesome fireworks.

We have so many beautiful photos and videos of the fireworks being shot off right here in downtown.

Are they on a barge when they shoot them off?

They were for Draft City Music Fest.

That

was the

first time ever thing.

We were super excited for that.

It turned out cool.

This time, however, for Fire Over the Fox, they will be Shoreline

side

again, down by, is it Gremant?

The

Gremant building.

OK, I should walk around and see those things.

Oh, I know.

I

know.

I would like to

have that job.

I would

not want

you

to have that job.

Okay.

I

wouldn't want your company to have the insurance policy.

Okay,

all right.

I can handle the whole thing myself.

Do you have enough?

Do you have enough yellow bags from festival?

I mean, are they promote?

That's what stamped on all the bags now is the fire.

Oh, I got you.

But you

know, it's one of those things though, too.

You got to see it.

I don't know.

Does anybody televised it anymore?

Channel 5.

Channel 5.

Yeah, they do their live newscast.

They'll be right on CityDeck.

So you can come down and watch and hang out.

They'll do their live newscast.

And then they start their special fireworks show at eight o'clock.

But

they carry the Green Bay Ones live.

OK.

But they're at like three or four different communities.

Yeah, they have cameras at a few different communities.

And they'll show them as they're going off.

I do believe the ones here in Green Bay are one of the later shows.

So they bring those live.

But I mean, you have to see it in person.

I

mean, at least one time in your life, you have to come to downtown Green Bay and find a good spot early on or whatever and really sit back and watch that.

It's really something.

The bridge

is stellar to

sit and watch those, but certainly there's a ton of vantage points throughout downtown that you can see those.

I'm going to ask her if I can get on the roof here.

Sure.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

Why couldn't you?

Well, I don't know where you find

the access to get it, but I mean, I just want

to live here.

Well, I know, but I don't want to be like climbing up the wall like Spider-Man

or something.

And then people are going to wonder where to park and there's plenty of parking and it's free.

Park where you want.

I would not park on the top floor in the ramp.

You take a lot of time to get out.

Does it?

OK.

Yes, but there is plenty of parking for people.

I don't need to worry about that.

And remember then it caught on the thing and the guy climbs up that grappling hook grappling hook.

I could see me doing that.

I couldn't.

I could see me grappling, throwing that up there and climbing up and

getting out.

When did this really, were you in office when this really started gaining traction?

Cause I remember it was basically just the fireworks

and

there was a big thing.

Guys, I channel five at the time and it's like, ooh, we're televising fireworks.

And it's, that was like the big thing.

Then when, how did this thing just keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger?

What

was it?

I would like to think the city deck had something to do with that.

Cause when we built that, that's when Zulaski moved.

him and Aaron came down and they set up their headcores.

And I don't know what happened.

We also did, we wanted to get people down earlier too.

So we rang the Liberty Bell and we swore in some new citizens

and

the judge would come down and that was quite a nice ceremony.

I

want to say it was kind of emotional too and they would speak after the ceremony.

And I think that was at one o'clock because

We went, you know, like three o'clock it starts

now,

but it was hard because the vendors are down there and six, eight people would come and buy something.

But every hour you could just tell more and more and then at six o'clock it was like, awesome.

But okay, what happened?

The first five hours we're here setting up our tent.

We

would be set up, me and

Murph, we'd be set up and given up.

So, given

up the fourth

of July, you know, to serve your family and

nobody, just have people coming up and ask you for CDs.

But, right.

But then I just want to say that on the seat.

I dated myself.

No, that's okay.

But Light Park didn't really kick into it later.

So then on the city deck, we had the bounce house, some of the things she's talking about.

So that got people down here, too.

And it was just easier to watch, too, instead of standing behind those bars.

But it's

amazing how it's grown.

And I do want to say that I think festival was up to game big

time.

Oh my gosh, having festival step up.

Is

that what shop go remember, John?

Yeah.

Oh, sure.

Oh my gosh,

I remember

that back in the day.

We have so many amazing sponsors that help us.

I think we mentioned it previously.

This is a heavy lift.

This

is a

big, big event,

and

we couldn't do it without such amazing sponsors and

partners.

We talk about the heavy lift.

I mean, you got to pay the bans, but there's added security.

You've got police and fire.

There's a lot of cost to this thing.

Oh,

absolutely.

Yeah, the event logistics, the...

DPW.

Yeah, the security meetings that happen and just making sure everything runs smoothly is huge.

And the reason it's such a heavy lift is...

We don't charge people.

Yeah.

Absolutely.

You don't charge.

It's

a free community event.

Right.

This is like a parade.

And that's why not a lot of people have a lot, a lot of praise.

They're expensive to put on.

They just are.

And this is even probably a little bit more so because it's in the evening and there's not that there's more risk, but there's just more

logistics to it.

And you know, we tell you're too young, Mary, but we talk about like when I first came to Green Bay, nobody went on Broadway.

Well, some people tell you, you didn't want to go and hang out with those

people.

Correct.

On

Broadway.

Correct.

And now for what it is, I mean, you have to have been here for a while to see the transformation.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Talked about that quite a bit.

Saturday, because there was a party on Broadway at Lenny's Tap.

And again, I don't know how much time you spend there, but they've been there for 50 years.

They have, yeah.

And it's just a great, great establishment.

I'm glad they didn't go away.

I can be honest with you, as much as we... Old neighborhood tavern.

Right.

as much as a lot of the places did go away and they needed to go away, he needed to stay.

And he's so charitable to the New Community Shelter, Salvation Army, and had a great party there celebrating 50 years of business.

50 years is a long time to be in business.

That

is a long time.

But it

still has that same amazing vibe that

it

did.

That is one of the reasons he's been so successful is he hasn't changed a whole lot.

Right.

Even when you go inside.

People love that.

Oh, I know.

And that was, and when we went to this party, I was just saying to some people, it was Green Bay.

I mean, he does some tourism there and has some people, but it was just a lot of people who, there's a couple of people I think that have been there all 50 years.

It's just

great.

But

anyway,

but

that adds to a neighborhood.

That kind of gives a

neighborhood a certain, what was the word you used earlier, a vibe.

You know, it gives a neighborhood a certain vibe.

But

for them, it's also nostalgia

and what

people love that because it helps them remember maybe

some of the good

parts of what Broadway used to be.

But now to have them still in a way kind of anchoring that north end of the district and to see how much has changed in between there and Shipyard is amazing.

I mean, it's a walk back in time when you just walk in.

I mean, which is so cool that, you know, it's not a sports bar that was thrown up in

three weeks.

That's what I'm saying.

He could have done that, but he stuck with his vision and it's obviously has worked.

I mean, that was just, it was just packed there.

That's so great to hear.

A lot of fun.

So, yeah, John makes a good point.

And I think it's cool to come, you know, go out to some field or something new, but the history and seeing the buildings and the bridges and the water, it's just, it's a cool place to be.

It has, you know, I try to take a couple moments here and there during this event because it's just such a long day and it's so busy.

But I try to take a couple of those moments to really take that in, right?

And try to see from one end to the other over the bridge because it's so packed with people and everyone's smiling and having a good time in their red, white, and blue.

And it's just, you're right, it's there's something about the atmosphere and the area of downtown and especially on that day.

It's just really a special

place to be.

I like to think of the fact that my dad, when he had come for packer games, would go there.

And I could go in the, maybe the same perhaps blue ribbon glass that, I mean, how often can you find that anymore?

Yeah.

And I don't know who you bring in if you still do that, but we always brought in a professional photographer.

And those were, that's what we put on our postcards a lot.

And we, baby each, I mean, the city has a lot of, cause we said.

we're gonna do something, let's make it worthy to put on a postcard.

And some of those pictures are unbelievable that you captured that night.

And go up on top of the Bellen building and you can capture some really, really, really great pictures.

Absolutely.

I just had a chat with Chris Rogowski, a chicken or the egg photography who's gonna be taking photos for

us on

July 4th.

And so we were just kind of checking out that shot list and what we might need this year and getting obviously a couple of great fire workshops.

Keen printing will do them for free.

Kevin, please.

You did them for me free for me.

And then you just give them out at hotels and people send them say, oh, it was in Green Bay.

So anyway, that's

awesome.

Love it.

He should be.

He should have a different job than this because he has so many ideas.

It's just like we have to deal with them all the time.

I still don't know, to be honest with you.

I really don't.

Either way, it's gonna be pretty low-key.

I will say that.

But you know what's cool about like even if you go up to Nagani or even what?

Hey, by the way, Mary was saying she she's north of Antigo.

She was at their cabin.

Yeah.

She said that deer flies and horse flies were terrible out there this weekend.

See, it's not fun

to

miss just either.

Yeah, I'm more of a spring and fall kind of cabin guy.

a cabin guy.

Why, you know, but there's something wrong with spring and fall too.

I know you I'm going to be honest.

No, you are missing the boat on something.

You always say you're going to do it going up to the U.P.

during the fall

to

see the colors

and those

little towns.

You know, I would do that.

Yeah, I'll do you're missing out on something there.

It's it's really spectacular a lot of those places

what I was going to say about these small towns It's amazing how they lean into the fireworks.

Yeah We went I don't know if we got lost or we're like in Tomah or something and I don't tell you doing up there, but we went the fireworks were like awesome Yeah, they were little two rivers their fireworks in Wallsfield their

Yeah, I think that's great how everybody celebrates the birthday of...

Can you?

Okay, the fireworks at Walsh Field, can you sit in the stands there to watch them?

That's gotta be the greatest seat you could have.

You can go on the field.

Wow!

Now, I don't know, I shouldn't say that that was Bob's word.

We're kids.

So I don't know if they changed that because of insurance or something, but yes, you are right.

That's cool.

Because

I love that baseball stadium

built

into that hill.

It is.

Yeah.

No, you're right there.

What was that called?

Picnic Hill?

Yeah.

Wow.

Yeah.

I haven't heard that term in a long.

That's what it's called.

Yeah.

So two rivers, man.

Everybody has great fireworks.

Now, so I, and you know, I don't know, you don't have to be like right there to see him.

You know what I mean?

Like some people are like, oh, it's too crowded.

Well, then go have six blocks away.

You can still see him.

But you know, another thing too with the fireworks is, I mean, even when you're stopping a roadside stand, which I haven't done in a lot of years, to be honest with you, I mean, you can't, you don't get a lot with a hundred dollars.

Like, you know, I remember one time I go, I'm going to have a bunch of people, I'm going to spend a hundred dollars and, and it's like.

That bag, that's it.

I mean, it's expensive.

Yeah, okay,

it's couple

things.

How much money out there, just for your own personal parties, what's the most somebody that's listening has spent on fireworks?

There's people who spend a lot, like a lot, because they wanna show off and yeah, there's people who have spent a lot.

And you gotta show the guy the cash and then he'll start working a deal.

I've done that, but I just wanna say for people in Green Bay, I'm shocked.

Hey, if you're negotiating where the guy worked on your chimney, well, he

was on the roof and

you're on the ground.

I'm shocked that you were negotiating

a

tent with a guy.

Like what?

But again, I, not that anyone would ever do this, but you may want to buy, if you live in the municipality of Green Bay, you might, might, might want to buy your fireworks in like Howard or Ashwama because they're better.

Why do you say

that?

Because they allow.

Better in which way?

More bang for your buck?

No.

In Green Bay, you can't shoot off fireworks that they can't leave the ground.

So you want to buy it?

I never

knew that.

Yeah.

Well, that's what it was.

I don't know.

I'm not.

Do they, you know, actually, we had the chief on here, right?

No, but his advice.

Go watch him.

I want to get a

police officer on.

Okay.

Fine.

Oh, do they actually go out on calls?

Like if a neighbor calls and says there's really, they

do.

And I think it's, I think it's, I think it's like, I don't know.

I don't want to quote.

OK, I have spent nothing on fireworks, John.

They're illegal in Green Bay.

if you go out because those the snow cone.

That is a good firework, but it doesn't leave the ground.

But you put the snow cone down and it is amazing.

It's like a

lava thing, isn't

it?

No, no, it shoots up.

It just, yeah, that's a good firework.

It's like 30 bucks.

So I got a few of those.

Okay.

Sometimes I use those just people come over.

Well, that's a good firework.

Okay, but here you are.

Which hat are you wearing?

What do you mean?

The Green Bay, no fireworks thing?

Or are you talking about what you're doing here?

Yeah, I don't know, John.

I'm confused.

What I've learned is I have some inventory.

If the law, whether it's speeding or fireworks, doesn't he doesn't want it to pertain to him?

He doesn't.
