Maino and the Mayor · Thu Jun 26, 2025

Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

And here are your hosts, John Mino

and Jim Schmidt.

Good morning.

Happy beautiful Thursday to you.

62.

And windy.

And

what?

Last night.

Band concert, everybody's wearing jackets, hats.

It's like, what is this, March?

And then New York.

But the concert was great.

104 in New York yesterday.

I know, yeah.

Yeah, I

talked to my kids, yeah.

And then there's supposed to be, well, we're gonna have Brittany on Monday, right Todd?

Yeah.

Have you seen that potential thing?

It's coming up from like, Illinois, that would go right through central Wisconsin.

No, that's next week.

Yeah.

That's good.

No, like tornadoes.

Oh, I didn't see that.

Heavy

thunderstorms.

I thought we were into the

low 80s.

But what?

I will say this once again.

We, we're not.

Oh, we're in that bubble.

We've been a bubble.

I love it.

This year, but that part of the state just seems to be getting pummeled.

Right.

We gotta do the, we gotta start marketing the Wisconsin bubble.

I know.

That's what it is, the Lake Michigan bubble.

Right.

I think there's something to it.

I mean, gotta put up like, you know, I will say this.

Go daddy and

let's buy

it right now.

Let's buy it this morning.

Did you see oh my god with tragic accident?

Did you see the owner of door dash and his parents?

Boat capped up capsized in Lake Tahoe.

Yeah started up door dash the whole thing and you know

sometimes people on

there Yeah, I mean sometimes you just think when you a multi-millionaire you have no problems your boat's gonna be phenomenal You're gonna have a captain.

That's right, and it's just like wow.

Yeah

Trucker Thursday to you.

Thank you.

Vicky Vicky's all hours.

He's all

the truckers.

Yeah, the Wisconsin bubble dot-com is still available Todd you jump on this

looking at it those dot-coms and that's good what it's gonna be if you buy it they could be like like $7 for this year and then like 20 bucks for the next two years it that's so inexpensive to buy that stuff like You're like that Pope de Green Bay.

I mean how long have I owned that and the just that's still there.

Yeah, and then cuz he's coming

I really he's I talked to a really pretty good friend of mine The pope is gonna come to Green Bay.

No, okay, just so we try to get the pope here

In

your lifetime, let me rephrase that Todd in

your

lifetime I was out he's pope for life.

He's got connections with the Norbertine order

Okay, he does right with brownie.

I guess I don't know.

He really does.

Okay.

Obviously a Chicago guy the shrine we are the only Shrine certified shrine in in the state of in the United States

right

here in champion.

Okay We tried to get the The last pope to come here did a pretty big campaign didn't happen But this guy because of his connections if he's going to see his brother, you know, it's like come on

It's

I agree.

I

mean, it's not like just come here.

But and then, you know, I mean, the the the the Packers are if you not that they're a religion, some people they are.

But if they were religion, what would you label them as?

If the Packer, would you say they were Catholic, like in terms of Lombardi?

And so you have mass.

I got it.

OK.

But no, I'm

not

the

whole

thing.

OK.

Got it.

Got it.

So you have

mass at.

Lambo field.

Okay, you know take him out there have some event.

I think a day here.

I Yeah, that would put that draft thing.

We just did that would be

big It would be very very big talk about getting some revenue outside and the best part he's got the t-shirt commission

I You know and it's not gonna happen this year, but I did talk to someone I want to tell you who he is, but he's pretty well connected goes

That will happen in your lifetime.

Wow.

So, and I, I don't know how much, I'm on the clock, I know that, but I would say, I don't know, four, five, six, seven

years.

So should we start already working on our game plan to make money on it?

No, no, yeah, we can start making money.

No, no, you guys remember?

I got you per village truck.

Right.

There you go.

All that stuff we've been talking about, it's all going to come

together.

I got it right here.

It's all pasties with the pope.

I love it.

I love

it.

This is going to work.

All right.

But that will bring people in and we can that's

Well, it's going to be, you know, a one and a half day event or something like that.

We're going to stretch that thing out.

I mean, we're going to sell the city.

We've never sold it before.

Anybody have any suggestions for us?

Please let us know as

well.

It's going to be great.

We're

going to line the streets when he comes down and 57.

So you, okay.

So you,

but I got, I would, we're not doing this until we get the green light from the Bishop because man, I got Chris Ryan and I got hauled in his office big time.

So, and I.

I just thought it

was

bad.

I

have

to be a fly in the hole.

I know, right?

I know.

I agree.

Wow.

Chris Rand goes in and has genuine flags.

Is your excellence?

Yeah, I know.

That was not my favorite meeting in 16 years.

So,

okay, what other one, because I'll tell you what, I used to think that was a joke when people would do that, but John Calipari, I think it is the basketball coach, got the trademark for three Pete.

You know, when you win three.

Oh,

yeah.

And

he got I think he's made he's given it all to charity or he says he has

of course.

I would too.

Yeah me too But where does that begin at home?

Um, but yeah, that's legit sometimes with those phrases and that

Yeah, just read that text that came in the Saints.

Okay.

All right read Nancy's text

Better get the request in to close off the street now.

You're right Nancy.

That's gonna be although

that's get County I gotta get that

gonna

get Troy on my side on this one He'll he he'll be on board

the other one was look Schmidt the most Catholic team in the NFL is the Saints.

I mean the Saints

But true to

I just I don't know that could be remember we had Billy Graham here his kid Yep at Lake Park.

No, that was awesome.

Okay

I mean, that was... Okay, can I just say something?

I'll bring some pictures.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no,

He talked our language.

He was in over our head.

That's what I liked about him.

I consulted how many presidents.

I know, but when you're a little kid, you want to watch Gunsmoke.

Oh,

well, Gunsmoke, Batman.

But you're right.

But when he had that rally come here, and they know what they're doing, but it was at Light Park.

And I'm going to show you a picture of that.

because get it to break.

It was,

it was good.

But I think if we do this, cause they had, you remember the Pope came to Philly, big, big deal there.

So of course he'd been to St.

Louis and a couple other played Denver and they filled up the stadiums.

So

we'll do that here.

So that'd be a, that's going to be fun.

I mean, we're going to head the committee, but

first,

but no, but first I'm not, I'm not getting in, I'm not getting in front of this one again.

I got in trouble last time.

So I'm going to do this, this protocol.

What's his name?

Yeah, it's his name.

Well, no, the pope's name.

Um, it's front.

It's first name Leo.

Leo.

Okay.

Um, but no, no, no, no, the annuncio is not a name.

It's a title.

So in

my, I think I got uncle denuncio.

Okay.

I can show you that family tree thing.

His name is annuncio.

Denuncio.

Okay.

I didn't say that.

It starts in E. Anyway, let me finish this.

So the, the protocol is, and this is why I got,

no, no, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

It's my uncle, my uncle Nacho.

Ignacio.

Ignacio.

Ignacio.

Really?

Yes.

Well, the annuncio is a title, okay?

But Ignacio means something too, in religion-wise.

Okay, let me finish.

So the protocol, right?

There's a bishop, cardinal, you know, there's a... I mean, obviously, the Catholic Church is kind of top-down, right?

A little bit.

Just a

little bit.

I mean, it's not like we vote on who our priest is going to be, right?

I mean, the congregation, you get a sign.

Everything's a sign from top

down.

Anyway, so this is my understanding.

And I look, there's a jazillion people out there, smarter than I am about this, but it's my understanding.

So the bishop's appointed by the pope, right?

He called the bishop.

He was in Wyoming.

He goes, hey, you're going to Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Oh, okay, great.

Yeah, thank you.

So you start with him and I like to do this he contacts the annuncio who is a Title it's a guy in DC who kind of takes care of the oh somebody's helping

me with what me Ignacio

oh

Spanish name means fiery or ardent.

It's my understanding that this guy takes care of the United States Popes like he'd be his chief of staff for the United States the annuncio So it's got to go to him and then he's the one who goes into contacts the Pope not Jim Schmitt

Let me tell you something.

The Pope will give you five minutes.

I would take it.

There's a newspaper on

this desk.

Under the business

sanctions.

When you leave, he's going to pick up the newspaper to read it.

If there's an envelope underneath, you get your wish.

If not.

Yeah.

I think in Green Bay, we could get a pretty big envelope.

I just think people, I just, just the notoriety, you still go to those places and.

You walk into some of these cathedrals and there's a huge plaque that Pope John Paul was here in whatever, you know, it's, it's bigger than the president.

I think.

Well, I mean,

people.

Well, more, I mean, it's worldwide.

Right.

Yeah.

So I mean, the coverage would get.

I agree.

I'm telling you, I

know.

I think we've been sitting here at this,

you know, can we make a buck this time?

Yes.

This, this is going to be easy pick inside.

All right.

But

again,

pasties for the pope.

Pasties with the Pope.

Yeah, no with the Pope.

Yeah, we could we could play like the paddles Everybody buy a paddle will spin the wheel and whoever gets it actually gets to have lunch with

them But I you know and I'll

just Steve here and he pierces I remember Billy Graham coming to Green Bay.

I think he's wrestled the crusher

We're star Billy

Graham.

Anyway, no, that was so I do, you know, we're getting a little bit older and we don't need big jobs, big money anymore.

We need projects to do things.

So thank

God we

don't.

But this could be fun.

I agree.

I'm with you.

And I would the connections that the few that I've made in my life, I would leverage those big time, you know, Packers government.

I would.

I would come out of retirement to be his altar boy.

You know what?

Wouldn't that be fun to work that mass?

I'll come out.

Vince from Barty was an altar boy.

Big time.

He was

like, died.

Yeah.

Yeah.

This is so weird because I'm sitting here going, what are they talking about?

No

way.

Oh man, to just, and just think of the

priests

that are just going to, you know, yes.

I don't wanna tell him a joke and that'd be it.

I don't know.

Did you hear what I'm all about?

Where the bears

suck?

Leo, Leo.

Be honest with me.

Be honest with me.

Yeah, but I

don't know.

All

right, I'm all with you on this one.

Even if it

would be like a...

Cos this is, you know what?

This could work.

Cos this is something you're passionate about.

Oh, yeah.

You know, like we always say when somebody comes in here and they're an artist or whatever, it's like, where's the passion?

Oh,

yeah.

I'd be all in on this.

I would, I would, yeah.

do a lot for this.

Yeah.

And it would be, just think of, you know, this, people would remember this

and this

is a Super Bowl bigger than that.

We're going to start putting together a committee of our people.

No, no, no.

First things first.

We have to get to

a Pope.

Sharturi, charcuterie, charcuterie board with that.

I just think

they will have all those.

for your parties, you know, the pope party.

They'll have those cheese, you know, like sculptures of the

pope, you know.

Maybe Spencer can do a painting, but he can't use cleats.

What could Spencer use?

To paint it.

Oh,

yeah.

You know, the

thing that he blesses it with, he can use one of those.

Okay.

Yeah.

I'm in.

I'm in.

Spencer could make some

cats.

He could make it.

Spencer could do some great stuff.

Even when you go to Rome in the pubs, there's all these tables around.

Be honest too,

merch is big with the Pope.

Oh man, are you kidding me?

And then you want it blessed by the Pope.

So everybody thinks this is blessed by the Pope.

I have a rosary blessed by the Pope, but you know what?

I

had

one.

My brother got it for me.

But you go, okay, but okay, what he said was blessed by the Pope.

I believe it, but how did it get blessed?

All the Pope does is you go there and there's like.

What?

50,000 people?

You hold up your rosary?

Exactly.

Any pluses, then.

But it's blessed by the poll.

So anyway,

that's going to be fun.

Is this Marty Stewart?

Yes.

Terry requested Marty Stewart.

Whole lot of highway on Trucker Thursday.

Back at this.

You

cannot beat Trucker Thursday.

Happy Thursday everybody.

62 degrees in Green Bay, 61 in Ampton, 64 in Oshkosh, mostly cloudy scattered thunderstorms.

I have 70 today.

Just let's get through June, maybe July will be nicer.

Today is canoe day.

I haven't gone canoeing in a long time, have you?

Yeah, it's like, no one can lose.

Kayaks have taken over.

Kayaks have

taken over.

Do that next week.

Today is handshake day, all right?

You know what?

That kind of, you know, it's so funny.

The fist bump through COVID type, fist bump kind of took over.

I mean, you'd be surprised sometimes, even like, I mean, these, I don't know, how do I call them, not high society people, but more when you go to a banquet type things, you get some, they'll.

This bump is a lot more common.

Oh, I handshake.

Oh, yeah,

absolutely.

These guys over yesterday just did deliver a custom.

I don't

Here's what I got.

But you know, they came to the door and I just, yeah, it's knowing shakes hands anymore.

Yeah, I think that, you know, it's more sanitary and it's respectful.

I was hoping when COVID came around, we weren't going to get into that bowing.

I did not like that.

Remember they talked about,

I remember

when I was going to be our way of saying hello.

I'm like, there

was

a real bad flu thing, probably 10 years ago or something.

It was really infectious.

And I remember I went to a couple of things and people did like the elbow thing.

It's like,

no, that's too much.

Fist bumps are great.

Fist bumps are perfect.

And it's quick.

And it's not... Handshakes can be awkward if you don't get the hand in the right

socket.

Oh, I know.

You know what I mean?

I do.

And then sometimes hands... Sometimes you shake someone's hand and I probably got a little firmer handshake and some people look at you like... I know.

Are you like hurting?

It's like what?

I just...

Anyway.

Or sometimes they're doing it just to show how strong they are.

Right.

But fist bumps... It's hard

looking

at you.

But fist bumps are a little awkward with women.

I

know

no, you know, you know, I do a

fist month a woman.

They always get a kickers.

I

always blow it up.

Oh, you know fireworks.

That's so weird.

No, it's not

they like that 10

11 Right, right gonna be 11.

Wow my

granddaughter's taught me that

one.

Yeah,

I'm sure they did and how

old are they?

Whatever uh chocolate pudding day can't screw up chocolate pudding.

That was always fun in the cafeteria bomb pop

day.

I don't know what

that is.

Yeah,

you do.

They're popsicles

popsicles.

Oh,

okay.

They popped.

They were they wanted to carve out their own day.

All right.

Coconut day.

I could live on coconut.

And you don't like no, I could live on it.

I mean,

I'll scrape it off.

I could live on coconut.

I say coconut oil is like the, you know, the beat all end all of health.

Look at me.

Different, right?

I mean,

your scar,

they

put that on your scars, your skin.

You know, I was gonna try to find some vitamin E or C for it.

I can't find it.

I went to Walgreens.

I went to CVS.

Where do you buy that?

Do you have to get that over?

Because I did get my new bee pollen tarot.

Is it tarot or talon?

Talon.

Talon.

No, tal-talo.

Talo.

That's what it

is, Talo.

Terror or Talo?

Talo.

Talo.

Talo.

Okay.

So I can measure people driving to work like Jesus.

Because I went through a full

container already.

No, what you need to do.

I

look so much younger when I see myself.

Yeah.

Those leaves that you break and those, that's what you should put on there.

Aloe?

Yeah.

I don't know where you find those either.

Yeah.

I think you just grow it at home.

I think

oh, yeah, yeah, yeah from the yeah in Arizona.

They used to have you just

snap off the sunburn Yeah, but not more than that.

It's like it's more than sunburn.

It's

yeah, you know, but that's what we'd use it for I mean people have those grown in their yards

and you

could break off a piece

and that's so natural I don't know why you want to get all that chemical stuff from the vitamin

E or C is chemical I don't know and be pollen certainly isn't

I

don't you see that story ABC News last night killer bees

are making such an unbelievable comeback and they're coming north.

They say it'll be really bad in like Kentucky, Ohio, place like that and they might just keep coming.

There's some kind of a weird atmospheric type of thing going on with the planet or something and they're just swarming.

You should see these

things.

This goes right into our previous conversation with Talotel with the planet or something.

It is.

Looks like you get a little bit more specific.

Okay, so what?

The bees are coming because of the planet.

Yeah.

Wow.

It's unbelievable.

I guess you should see these swarms.

Okay.

What do we they'll kill you?

Okay.

So this was on national news.

Nate David Murr.

Okay.

What do you just do to scare us?

Or was there

there was a was there a scientific reporter?

It's unbelievable.

Where do you see these things?

Okay,

you're

saying now about 72 people die a year from bees.

And

in Mississippi, they've had several already from these killer bees that

No disrespect Todd, but even I was watching news last night and said the heat index in Jackson, Mississippi was like 108 I thought I can't think of any place I'd rather be less than Jackson, Mississippi I know Wow and just humid Vicki says I'd love to fist bump and blow it up with mine.

Oh, okay.

Thank

you.

Thank you Vicki next time we see

you Yeah, but you know how can you not like coconut cream pie on my deathbed?

I want a piece of coconut cream pie,

you know mine.

All right

Ariana Grande is 32 Michael Vick 45 Derek Jeter 51 Gretchen Wilson 52 Todd you remember when she was gonna be the next biggest thing.

Yeah, and she just kind of faded away.

Yeah.

Well, yeah Crystal Donald 55.

Okay, Crystal Donald.

Mm-hmm The office.

No, no Parks and Rec.

Nope Young guy

Has done like

Superhero.

Is he like the kid in Stand By Me?

Uh, no.

No.

No.

I'm getting this one really wrong.

Yeah.

All right.

Well, one of my favorite people in the world who had one of the greatest lines in TV history, Nick Offerman, is 55.

I thought he'd be older.

So he was in Batman and Robin in 97, Batman Forever, NCIS, Los Angeles.

Oh, right.

That's

what Chris O'Donnell is.

Don't

know him.

Yeah.

Nick Offerman in Perfect.

Oh, he's funny.

Funny.

You know, you've got to start eating better.

What was his name again?

Oh, you can't think of it, but you have to start eating better because you're cholesterol.

Hmm.

What is cholesterol?

He says, tonight, I'm going home.

I'm having a couple glasses of straight whiskey, and I'm going to use power tools and build a nice dinette set

tonight.

I know who he is.

Yeah.

Ron, Ron Swanson.

Yes, Ron.

That

guy is calling again.

How did you handle it?

I put him on hold for 42 minutes.

Good job.

Good job.

Quick break.

Back in.

I don't see a cop inside Six days on the road in a mug on a magazine

Got something to say?

Text Mino and the Mayor directly through the Civic Media app.

Download the app, choose your station, W-I-S-S or WGBW, then hit the talk button in the lower right hand corner and text the studio directly.

Now, back to Mino and the Mayor.

Here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Once again, happy Trucker Thursday to you.

Not real nice outside.

62 in Green Bay, windy, Alpine 61, Oshkosh 64.

You want to know a job I could not have?

Yeah, well a lot of them,

but what I mean nobody mean that I couldn't I would not they'd say hey We're gonna pay you 500 grand a year, but here's what you gotta do name one

What is that

the guy in the crane out here?

Oh?

Huh, right?

How does he even get up there?

Is there an elevator?

I couldn't see like an elevator, but there must be Can

you imagine we get everybody has a bad day right something happens?

Yeah, you drop a jar of

Jalapeno jalapenos and step on them right clean it up, right?

Can you imagine having a bad day at that job?

No, no Yeah, yeah, it's

nice to see that coming out of the ground though.

Yeah, I mean, they're really making progress that guy

though who That

company is just we're talking about the apartment complex right next to the Where the packer stuff used to be

and next to where that building that should have been torn down into a park

is been renovated to a low income housing.

So that's the building is great.

The building is great.

So.

But my God, I'd love to talk to that guy sometime.

Just get him on.

We

should wander down there one morning and see if we can get him on.

Yeah.

I think they would be

happy to

do that.

You have some connections, Jim?

I do.

Let's get that

lined

up.

I do.

Or

you gotta

get

the Pope here.

You gotta get this guy.

No, I do have a connection with this guy because he is really good friends with Quick Trip.

Oh, OK.

Yeah, they

golfed

there.

Great.

All

right, that's great.

I drink with them at the Northland.

OK.

So, yes.

Well, that would be the owner.

So I don't know about the construction work.

We probably have to go through the owner and say, look, can we get 15 minutes of this guy's time to come down to the studio and talk to us?

Yeah,

all

right.

That would be cool.

You want the crane guy?

Yeah.

Yeah, it'd be fun.

And it sits up in that little thing.

Yeah.

I mean, can you imagine that on a windy day?

Like, even today, that thing would probably be rocky.

Remember that thing in Milwaukee?

Absolutely.

What was it?

Big blue or whatever

it was and that thing?

Yeah.

Wow.

Again, all the credit in the world for that job.

I'll work on that.

So Pope Crane.

All right.

Yeah, it's only 637.

I

know.

Michael says, I feel bad for Conn Knippel, drafted by one of the worst professionally managed sports franchises.

It is.

It's actually been, I think, named that.

They just can't get it going.

They put a lot of stock into, is it LeVar?

No.

Whatever one of the ball brothers is.

the youngest one or middle one whatever and he's been hurt all the time and they get these high hopes and they just can't win and they're not drawing a lot but with that being said he will get instant playing time he will be a starter i bet or six man from day one

well that's cool yeah um what okay so the two owns the team is it the owner

what's the problem with that team

oh

That's not always

the

best thing.

Yeah, so they have good morning fellas Vinnie Tori says go to the black market get yourself some breast milk to cure your skin Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna be doing that Tori, but thank you Going on actually talk to Todd Todd here's what you got to

do John doesn't gotta go in the

black market for me go in

the dark web

Then I get a call from HR.

Hey, Todd, we were checking your web browser.

Yeah, what's the start web breast milk?

Yeah, I'm doing it for mino.

Oh, okay.

Makes total sense.

Yeah, got it.

Yeah, no problem.

All

right.

Keep them

happy.

Yes.

But that was an amazing day for sports yesterday.

And I watched the NFL or the NBA draft.

And it's really cool because they it's really a family thing there.

I mean, they have

Lamello ball.

Thank you, Michael.

They have I mean all the moms are there all the whatever's and the one guy from Puerto Rico was there's amazing number of people from Puerto Rico and they talked about he didn't have a thing they were like So poor it was incredible.

So then when he got his NIL money, okay?

He gave it to the school he had gone to down there for I think eight scholarships for kids to be able to get out of the

The ghetto I mean they called it there in the ghetto and he said they he paid for those kids to go to this like private school Now those are the people you really pull for oh, yeah, those are the people you pull for

you got to break that poverty That's hard to get out.

Yes, that's yeah.

Well, you've been I've never been to Puerto Rico.

I heard it's rough,

huh?

Was I in Puerto Rico?

I

thought you were

no you went to Haiti, right?

Oh, hey,

that's right.

That's

right.

That's right

Yeah,

I

know

That's poverty corrupt government.

Yeah, it's just it getting that thing turned around ain't gonna happen.

You don't hear much about that anymore.

Yeah.

No, there's other stuff going on.

Wow.

All right.

Okay, how much is this kid gonna make?

I don't know you can you can look it up because it's you don't even like negotiate anymore It's locked in like whatever position you're drafted in that's so much that is slotted for if your rookie contract

for

a year

Um, I think it's three year

contracts, but it's over a million dollars, isn't it?

Oh, yeah, but you could you could look it up.

Okay.

What is the fourth player in the NBA draft make?

It's just really there that

yeah, that's kind of cool really because it I don't know and they have to play they can't like hold on

the can and go to France or someplace and play but

huh.

Yeah.

All right.

Well, congrats to him, right?

I mean his parents got to be

what's kind but think about this too.

So two people from the state of Wisconsin

in the same family drafted in the NBA.

I mean, Jeff Nordgaard, his uncle, and him.

That's pretty amazing.

That's pretty cool.

Yup.

That's four year deal worth 45 mil.

Okay.

Is it more than a million dollars?

Wow.

Yeah.

That is serious, serious money.

Isn't that incredible?

That's incredible.

And he's what he's all of what?

21, 22,

19.

Oh, he's that young?

Well, he played in the state high school championship game last not this past March obviously a year ago March Wow, okay, so 19 Then he's got three or four brothers that are all coming up right about his size right

19 is right 19 20 in August isn't that something 45 million 19 he'll do all right

and his dad played for me in Nagani

And we're sitting on the air talking about trying to get the Pope in town and getting the crane

operator

on the radio station.

Although

this kid, are they Catholics?

No, they're very religious.

Well, we can convert them by that.

That's all right,

because everybody, even though Christians, they like the Pope.

You

know what I mean?

Like, he's

kind of... I don't know.

Welcome to Are They Catholic?

I'm just looking for some money.

That is such a my mom thing.

That is such a

my mom thing.

If you're going out with any of my mothers or sisters, not me so much at that point, but the

first... Mine too.

Mine too?

Hey, look, I... That was so important.

It was, wasn't it?

That's funny when I said that I thought, I've heard that before.

Yes.

So here I am.

I'm coming up with a whole game show in my mind, right?

Yeah.

We've got a little sister nun on the side.

She's the announcer.

Yeah.

She's got a little podium, right?

Yeah.

And then instead of like light bulbs, it's all candelabras.

There you go.

Like,

okay.

I love it.

Love it.

Yes.

Yeah.

Oh, God, that's funny.

But your mom too, then.

Oh, man.

I remember my mom.

Or they're not

Catholic.

Oh, she'll tell you they're not Catholics.

Okay, move on.

Joey.

Joey.

Joey.

Emma.

That's funny sometimes if they knew already it was game over.

She's not Catholic

Nancy just text us in and if you get an answer wrong somebody slaps your knuckles with a ruler

Catholics are coming out I was gonna talk to him about funding the promotional for that

with this part of his $45 million, because you're supposed

to

tithe 10%.

That'd be 4.5 million.

Don't need all that, but that would be...

Catholics don't do that.

No, they're

supposed to.

They really don't.

No, no, that, you're thinking of, you're thinking of the

Mormons.

No, no, John.

Okay, you're right.

We got away from that, but you should tithe 10%.

Really?

Mm-hmm.

Okay.

Yeah.

Boy, am I

in trouble.

That's funny, actually.

I'll do the I remember

one time

my sister was dating a guy who was a religion my family did not get along with and That was not good.

He was different religion.

Yeah, I bet you did was your dad around then?

Yeah, they didn't like

that didn't like that.

No my dad Yeah, he was there were it's rigid religion used to be so much more it was more than anything cut throat almost yeah, what religion you were was really important back

then

Yeah, but they didn't they only yeah, it's not like that anymore.

But yes, it was

I remember one time my brother who was this really great athlete Okay, he had a scholarship to Western Michigan for baseball and then he got hurt and whatever whatever But the football coach really wanted him to go to the public school Okay, all the coaches that they really want he was a phenom almost okay and My mom said no

God will get you for that or something.

Leave the Catholic school.

That's how serious it was.

That something would happen if you left the Catholic school and went to the public school.

And

they believed it.

I mean, they weren't just whatever.

Yeah.

I'm glad that come around a little bit on that.

Well, I think so.

Yeah.

All right.

Well, anyway, I want to get I want that kid's number because I think even though he's Lutheran, we can he can throw in a little one.

This is just Michael here in my family since I grew up Jewish.

I was guilty today One

of our contacts back this you know, we'll wrap up this poop thing but Mayor Nutter who was the mayor of Philadelphia when the Pope came was Involved in that so we'll get him on the phone on this show to say look What did what was the involvement?

How'd you do how much money do you have to raise and he'll help us with that?

No guys is Pope John, but

You lead the way I will but

I

will be another contact.

I'm thinking of the contacts to get this guy here But I'm not doing anything and put money on this

a year from now.

We still won't have Okay,

I

will

we will okay.

I don't you guys make all you wait

How's it look from that angle Johnny up there?

Alright, I'm gonna

be the altibar, remember?

I love projects like

I got energy right now.

I love projects.

So that's excellent.

Sometimes they'll save that down.

I'll just do you

know any own I love

watching you try to do projects.

So it's entertainment for the entire family.

I don't know that there's a morning show out there anywhere that has as many laps as we

do in the first hour.

We got a great lineup.

Tell us about this lineup you got coming up today.

I tell you

this seven o'clock hour.

Go ahead dad.

No seven o'clock hour is going to be great.

We are so

It is going to get warm out, and we're concerned about fires dry, but also the fireworks.

And there's also things that we talked about that we need to talk about again, lithium batteries, a number of things that cause fires.

And obviously kitchen fires are the biggest thing.

So we've got Matthew Knott's coming in.

He's the fire chief of Green Bay.

He's probably been with us about three years, two years, three.

Anyway, he's coming in, talking about firework safety, which is really weird.

He's going to talk about how you can buy them.

but you can't shoot them

off.

I mean, our state laws are kind of a little- And depending on sometimes what count, like if you're in Bellevue versus Ledgeview versus whatever.

We, I am, well, yeah, in a different municipality because they're better, you know?

And they, I don't know, but of course we would never shoot them off.

We just looked at them.

They're on the shelf.

And look at these, lovely.

Yeah,

look at this, but I don't know, fireworks are awesome, but he's going to talk about that and

Then there's permits if you're gonna, some people like shows.

And you can get a permit.

Some of these people out on the...

I almost accidentally caused a guy to die because of fireworks.

I believe that.

But he was this old guy, really old.

Yeah.

No one even says his name.

Old Italian guy.

He used to go apple picking all the time up in the woods where I lived.

And I was throwing cherry bombs into the mine pit.

He thought somebody was shooting at me and he went home and called the police and the police came to my house.

Oh That did not go over.

Well, I bet not so we got Michael not scream a fire chief.

We got the only nose.

She's gonna be great amazing amazing artist Mike Steve pack Fox Sports

Ashley from downtown Green Bay who's lasting my kid not pronounced We'll be back

Well,

it's Monday morning.

Hey, welcome back.

Mine on the mayor here on Truck Earth Thursday.

Talk about something that's really important right now.

Then, of course, is fireworks, fireworks safety, all those kinds of things.

Got Matthew Nats and Nick Craig from the Green Bay Fire Department in here.

Chief,

good to have you.

Yeah, great to be here.

Thank you very much.

My

Nagani minor friend, good to have you.

Great to be here.

Where do you like your kudugis from the best up there?

Tino's.

Yeah, thank you.

Home to pizza.

Congress.

You're a congressman, not a congressman.

Okay,

good.

I told

you chief, we won't be in this conversation

for a while.

That's funny.

We'll have to check out good pizza, so yeah.

Absolutely.

So I know...

Chief, you've been here, what, a little over two years?

Yeah, a little over two years, about two and a half.

You're doing a great job.

I wanna,

before we get into fire safety, and you know, Johnson, this is the time, but it's always time for fire safety.

There's kitchen fires that happen all year, but we've got fireworks coming up, lithium

batteries.

And as we're talking about those batteries that become an issue.

But for first, I wanna start with the story that I wanna just thank you.

I will say that if there's an umbrella of fire, and even when I was working with you guys,

Your customer service is second to none.

The comments we get was, they are the nicest guys.

My trainer, believe it or not, I go to an athletic trainer.

You can't tell, but it's... Don't say

her name, poor

thing.

We're stuck in an elevator.

Saturday.

At that cheap elevator, that city never put any money into.

Is this legit?

You should see the picture.

And these guys came in, I said, were they in eight minutes?

He goes less than eight, like four minutes.

And they, they got in the elevator and it got stuck between two floors.

They were in there for over an hour.

And they're just their clothes were just

drenched because it's hotter than hell on Saturday.

Missed the show at the Meyer Theater.

It was date night.

They have a 10 month old kid.

First time they

got out.

Yeah, no, it's not quite the experience.

It was,

I said, I said, hey, you're gonna,

File a complaint who's on I'm not that kind of guy.

I said I am 25% But you just I just want to pass that on to you.

I told him yesterday that I was gonna pass that show and but because those guys were so nice and calm cuz his wife got a little anxious So anyway, and I he called the maintenance guy the elevator and of course he didn't know what the hell he was doing and anyway, it was an hour

And his shirt, he said, let me show you some pictures.

And he just drenched

because it was hot.

It was really

hot.

I would have been like die hard and take out the towel and crawl through the duct.

Anything to get

out

of there.

But I just want to say, Chief, when he told me that, I'm like, that the customers, those guys were so calm and so friendly and so nice.

And I just, that didn't surprise me at all.

I'm just telling you that.

And I think everybody knows that.

I just want to

thank you.

Yeah.

It's something really pride ourselves and our people are just.

Awesome.

Yeah, just great and do such great work every day.

And yeah, it's always nice to hear that though.

And we'll make sure we pass it on.

I want to buy the

old firehouse down here.

Okay.

Yeah.

It's for sale.

Sure.

It's like a block, right?

Yeah, we're looking for some really exciting things going in there.

So that's such a cool building right in that spot here, storage spot.

it is great potential does

coffee shop bike rentals there's a lot of cool

stuff yeah we really want to see like that really public facing yeah you know and you know your restaurants or something I mean something really cool there really pay homage

when you come

in from

you know absolutely and

I think the look love Broadway and everything that's going on but

The income is a little bit higher over there.

I just think if you get the support from the Astro neighborhood, and I just think people will support that.

I think people are looking forward to that.

That has been talked about for many, many, many years.

And even after we close that thing down, which was a while ago, the potential there is great.

So I

hope it doesn't become an office.

I hope it becomes

something that we want to see is that really public facing.

building there, you know, it's such a great location.

It's such a really, you know, pay honor to the fire department is really a big thing.

Well, and we like museums, right?

I mean, and

John's, I like the autumn museum.

I think that's

awesome.

Johnny's really wants to lean into like a veterans museum

somewhere.

And he's looking at a couple properties.

I want to do a music hall of fame

museum because I love music.

this big history of music in town.

There is.

It's amazing.

And when you really look into it,

it's even stronger than I think people think.

I mean, we've written some great music here.

And I think to honor the fire department, you could do a museum there too.

I know you talked about that at one time.

Sam talked about that.

But I don't know, I just think it's cool to celebrate history.

Yeah.

And we're certainly looking at like our new fire station, which is also the part of the master plan on Broadway is have

the space there for a museum.

Really have some of this memorabilia, but we have a great exhibit encourage everybody.

Okay, we've got one

of our good sponsors in Oshkosh.

He's an attorney.

All right.

Okay.

And there should see that office is in the fire station built.

Todd, do you know the year?

I don't.

We were using horses.

100 years.

I was

all horse drawn.

Oh, and their whole offices in there.

And they found some old stuff that were just left.

It's like a museum in itself right downtown Oshkosh.

It is so cool.

Very nice.

Any

honors the fire department with

He fixed the stuff up and

that's just a very place at all really cool.

Sure.

Yeah, that's important to us too and that that building we really want to see that you know some fire department theme or something that really exactly you know honors what we

think about the fire department and It's changed, but it really hasn't I mean you put out fires and you got really nice people You don't slide down the pole anymore.

There's technology, but it's still putting out fires

Right

leaving your place and going to their place,

you know that those traditions still stay and

you know, we do, we do a lot of the same things, obviously.

And, but we just keep picking up more and more.

And that's the, that's what we do is we just help people and solve problems.

And

I think that's one of the reasons your retention is pretty good, your department.

And I think because of the traditions, even that ringing of the bell, some of the things that you do to honor people.

And yeah, that's, that's, I want to talk about.

the industry.

We're gonna get a lot to talk about.

You

can stick around though, right?

I

mean, we

kind

of had you in here just to kind of say hi and talk a little bit about Nagani.

I had to get that out of

the way.

All right, we're gonna send her a quick break.

We come back.

Chief Matthew Knotts, Nick Craig, Green Bay Fire Department.

We got a lot of things to talk about including firework safety coming up right now on Trucker Thursday on Mine on the

Mirror.

Sure, for sure.

By golly, it's clean.

Clear to flag down.

Come on.

Yeah, we definitely got the front door good, buddy.

Mercy thinks alive.

Looks like we've got us a convoy.

was the dark of the moon on the 6th of June in a Kenworth pulling logs.

Cab over Pete with a reefer on and a Jimmy hauling hugs.

We is heading for Bear on I-10 about a mile out of Shaggy Town.

I says, pick pen, this here's a rubber duck and I'm about to put the hammer down.

Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

And

here are your hosts, John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back, our number two of Mino and the Mayor here on a blustery Thursday morning on Trucker Thursday.

Matthew Knott, Nick Craig, Green Bay Fire Chief, and what would your, what would your official title be?

I'm a captain.

Okay.

We'll give you that.

I'm helping out in fire prevention right now.

Nice.

We got a lot of that to talk about right now in firework safety and everything, Jim.

It is.

And this is so important.

We're going to talk about it today because the fourth is coming up.

But this is important every day.

I mean, we had a lot of kitchen fires and I don't know how many you respond to every month, every year.

But I want to talk about fireworks because we all love them, right?

We kind of do some of us buy them and maybe even a different municipality.

What is, what is the rule abuse?

Can we shoot them off?

Can we buy them here in Green Bay at these stands for spend a hundred bucks and have the kids?

Well, what we really encourage is everybody to enjoy the professional shows, right?

We understand and Nick's going to talk about a little bit too about, you know, we really were concerned about the injury.

Right.

You know, fires and injury and really like these things are just best left for professionals.

Just go enjoy these professional shows.

Yeah.

You know, there are sales.

You can buy them.

There's some real restrictions of them.

Like I said, Nick can join in.

But just reading the rappers, they try to get more lethal and explosive

over here.

Oh, I know.

Megatron.

The names are always entertaining.

Exactly.

That's what I mean.

I know.

I

thought there's a marketing job.

That'd be fun.

But Nick,

what do

you suggest?

I agree with the chief that, look, we got fires on Fridays.

Fire Over the Fox,

that's sponsored,

which is a great,

great

show.

And

there's a lot of these smaller communities that I think do a really good job.

Two rivers, Kiwani, some of these places up north, those are Tomah, there's a great fireworks show.

However, there aren't these dads, I don't know who they are, but they like to just show off.

Everybody look at Jim.

All right, Nick, tell us what do you suggest?

So with consumer fireworks, excuse me, the latest.

info that we have is from 2022.

Average of 31,000 fires started across the U.S.

3,500 structure fires, 26,000 outside fires.

And a side note with that is wildfires started by fireworks are doubled on the 4th of July.

Even

some of the California ones they think were

fireworks.

An estimated six civilian deaths were caused by fireworks in 2022.

And every year in Green Bay, we see several incidents caused by fireworks improperly disposed of fireworks.

You know, people don't soak them in a, you know, right?

Because they stay hot for a long time.

They do, right?

Yep.

Fireworks that are landing on roughs of homes that has caused several fires across the last couple of years.

And then the biggest thing is the amount of injuries.

We're looking at over 10,000 injuries caused by consumer fireworks every year.

And the ones that are legal for consumers to buy are actually causing

the majority of those injuries, because they're the most accessible.

So really,

even though they're legal, the guy buys them legal, they're legal to shoot off, it's still high-prone

industry injury?

Yeah, just, for example, sparklers, they burn it over 1200 degrees.

That's super hot.

Obviously, the end of the metal rod on the sparkler is red hot when it's done burning.

Sparklers account for 29% of fireworks injuries for children under the age of five, treated in emergency rooms.

So the big thing is, if you're gonna let kids use sparklers and the safe and sane, so to speak, fireworks, which aren't really that safe or sane, you wanna have good adult supervision.

Sober adult supervision.

Yeah, have that bucket of water.

Yeah, that sober is a good, yeah, cause that's just true.

I didn't think of that, but that.

You know, I'm surprised somebody hasn't invented a sparkler with a handle.

Or maybe they have.

You know what

I'm saying?

You're right.

You're holding your

wire.

You're holding the wire.

Okay.

And sparklers though, they're a blast.

Write your name.

I mean,

okay.

All right.

I'll make a note of that sober.

You know, if your child is going to use it, you know, make sure you give them a little guidance before you light it.

You know, hold it away from your face.

Don't put it by anyone else.

Keep it away from people.

that that supervision is really key to to help and keep things safe.

Okay,

people don't know the force of a cherry bomb sometimes.

I mean,

that's

it's like a shotgun shell going off in your hand.

Isn't it though?

Yeah.

Okay, John, do you want to finish the story or you told it?

Yeah, John was throwing them.

Oh,

yeah, I told him story.

This

is Nagani,

though.

Okay, okay.

So it's one of the mind pits

of

the thing that's raised to play and handsome cherry bombs.

that I got from somebody, somebody, and I was only like eight or nine, which I should not have been doing.

But I was throwing

up.

He was sober.

I

was

throwing

him in the pit because that was so cool.

It'd be like a geyser.

Well, it's old Italian guy was out picking apples.

And he thought somebody was shooting at him.

Oh, my God.

He went to

the police, filed a report.

Oh, no.

Yeah.

They showed up at my door

and went over well with my dad.

I just came home from the Matherby iron ore mine.

Yeah.

Oh, no.

So with all right.

the fireworks.

So, um, is there a safe way to do it?

You get the bucket of water, right?

To put or is there,

I'm not

saying, I know you're not going to promote it because that's not your job.

But if someone's going

to do it, let's give them some safety tips.

You know, even the safe and sane ones, the spark fountains, the snakes, the sparklers, all those should be put into a bucket of water overnight away from a building.

That's the biggest thing is away from a structure.

Uh, when people dispose of them and put it in the garage, that's, that's not the best place for keep it outside away from things.

Hey, did you see that fire is on?

ABC News last night.

I can't think what where the whole thing exploded like the firefight three firefighters were injured It was just a house and the people don't know what they said It wasn't that the gas natural gas company said no it wasn't us someone but it it's people don't like I knew one guy who was a reloader and You don't think you know what I mean people have some things in their

house and you

never think there's gonna be a fire But man if there is and you guys have to go in you I mean that

can be lethal stuff

Sure.

You know, it's just like, you never know what hazards.

So that's why we're all the PPE, all our personal protective equipment and have, you know, always ready for whatever, all those inevitable things.

Summer is eventually going to get here.

Well, I was here for a couple of days.

But people like to have their little fire in the back yard.

How many feet is that legal?

Yeah, I can handle that.

For the city of Green Bay, it's 25 feet away from...

Oh, anything.

That's as far as I didn't realize that.

I'm glad you're using one of the portable Weber type above ground fire pits.

Those can be a little bit closer, 15 feet.

Bellevue and Allaway are 15 feet for anything.

OK.

But

that's the thing, because we lived in ledge view versus Green Bay.

It

was different from one to the other

type thing.

Yeah.

There's some basic standards that are the same, you know, with the international fire code.

And like I said, it is.

there could be some confusion and we're trying to work with all those different ages.

So Nick, those

the things that you buy that are above ground that had the seat the seat through what mesh cover on 15 feet from your garage or your house.

Correct or a fence.

Well, that that's doable.

You can sit around

with a chair and talk a little bit.

Yeah.

And those, you know, those numbers came about because of specific problems, right?

And it's not like just like most everything is there's reasons why.

It's not just an arbitrary number,

so how is the I remember after 9 11 of horrible horrible tragedy But boy it became cool to be a firefighter and you know EMT and everything like that And I know a lot of applications wasn't way up is it still like that because I mean it's it's still a very prestigious job

Oh, yeah, I think it is and you know

We just going through a hiring process now.

So we just start doing interviews and you know, the quality of the candidates we get is top notch.

Just absolutely stellar candidates and we always seem to get enough and you know, it's great.

It's not, and certainly just like most other jobs, it's not like it maybe used to be, right?

Where we'd have thousands and thousands of applicants and but actually, you know, we have really high standards and we have a lot of people that meter exceed those standards.

So it's really good.

Are the

Are you getting the youth to come in or is it transfers?

Who's who's coming into the fire department?

So our applicants have to have an associates degree.

So, you know, they're they've already been through some training had some and so that's our that's our applicant pool.

Okay.

And are they trained in EMT and fire?

They are.

Yeah, they will come with all their all their certifications.

That's nice.

Yep.

I mean

they have both of those things.

All right The other thing that we have is we have a cadet program and that is basically like boy scouts or girl scouts to try out See if the fire department is something for you.

So a lot of those Cadets that have gone through our cadet program in high school have actually been hired by us

When I was there and towards the end we weren't kidding enough women in

police and fire but actually fire was a weird little and went to a conference why can't we get more women in our fire department and they had told us that if a woman teaches them there's a better chance they're gonna be engaged I mean you guys are super nice guys but

How are we doing on attracting females to both, maybe you can't speak for police, but for fire?

Yeah, just on the fire side.

I mean, we really want our department to represent our community.

Right.

And all facets of it.

And really what we look for is, you know, where we're at is our applicant pool is the graduates of tech school.

So, you know, we're looking at our cadet program, which has a lot of good representation of our community in that.

but we're also looking at starting earlier because a lot of times when we see somebody that's bibby 21 they've already made their career choices and made decisions but you know if we could get to them earlier and show them the fire service and again have people that look similar to them it really works out well so.

And we do every year get a pretty good mixture of female to male deaths in our

program.

I just want to say one thing though, too, like with the military, you know, I'm so old that it's like, oh, females are the weaker sex.

They could never do anything except be secretaries in the me.

And that was that was the thing that people really thought not even

now.

You want to talk about some people that can kick your butt and do whatever.

Yeah.

And it's like, you know, there's, you know, and, you know, again, my daughter's in the military and, you know, doing fantastic.

And, you know, there is this is a job for absolutely everyone there.

you know, there is, you take a scenario of, you know, one of us in a structure fire, for example, and we have to rescue them.

I can't do it myself.

And that's the beauty of the fire service.

It's a team effort.

And we all work together.

And it's like, you know, on medical calls, you know, some people have better skill sets than others and fires same thing.

It's like, but it's just the team and we all work together and solve those problems.

So chief, tell me about a junior in high school right now.

And, you know,

his parents, what are you going to do?

Everybody, what are you going to do?

And he's interested in fire.

What advice do you have?

And I teach at NWTC.

I think they've got great programs

out there.

The other thing they

have out there that I just encouraged a friend of mine, I was talking to her, just to go out for an assessment because she has no idea what she

wants

to do.

And I'm like, and she's super talented.

I don't know if it's dental hygienists.

She doesn't have the resources and she doesn't really want to go to college, nor should she.

She's just not.

But she wants to do something and she doesn't know what culinary.

And but anyway, a junior in high school, Preble, that if they want to explore public safety, explore fire, what would your advice be to them?

I would say the cadet program is a great start for that.

I mean, you can after they've completed a certain amount of training, they can actually do ride alongs with us.

Wow.

You know, that's cool.

Very cool.

And

tell me about Nick.

getting into the cadets.

Is it online or is it you?

Yeah, so it is on our website.

Our website's greenbayfd.com.

And then if you just do a search for cadets, you can sign up for the program.

It actually starts in September and runs through the fall meets, I believe, once a month.

Okay, great.

Give me your number one, I don't want to say criteria, but what do you guys look for?

Attitude.

Okay, there you go.

Yeah, it's, you know, we can do all the training for everything else, but it's the attitude.

And, you know, it's just nice to...

Like all the applicants we've had, we just did interviews, and that's what people say is they really like our culture, like what we're doing.

People are great.

All those things we talked about, and that really shows.

That's awesome.

And it doesn't.

I just really, again, I don't want to, but I really want to applaud you for that, because that is more important than I'm with you on that than anything.

The tactics you're teaching

oh, yeah, we can do that right all those skill sets we teach and they come to us really well prepared And then we do our own training to fine tune it a little bit.

Yep

You know I just want to say for parents and is that it's a prestigious job.

Oh, I

think it's a very respectable job

It

is and I think that's great.

Yeah, but thanks

for leading the department

and you

too, you know, I mean

you've

been at that

I told you guys I felt it for my brother twice up in the garden.

Yeah, but I got there later.

I'm a truck

is

on the way out the door now.

Total loss.

I still put on

the whole unit and they came

back

to get me.

I didn't go against the

wall.

It says you get run over.

You guys are awesome.

Thanks for coming, you guys.

Thank you.

Nick Craig, Green Bay Fire Chief, Green Bay Fire Department.

Thank you so much for everything

you guys

do.

Keep up

the

good work.

Thank you very much.

We appreciate it.

Thank

you.

Thanks for having us.

But the fourth of July is coming up and I just want to thank those guys for

those guys are busy

Appreciate

it very much

and the chief but we've tried to get him in before and he was Really looking forward to this and I think just a reminder look some of us are gonna shoot off fireworks But to have that bucket of water there

doesn't cost a lot and to throw everything in there right away instead of you throw it into the garbage can and it smolders and starts a garage fire and um so i and i'm not doing the sparklers i don't think

when then we didn't have time to talk about the we want to talk to the lithium batteries we'll do that next time i like to get them back as soon as possible because that's a real serious thing that's happening and

then he's got some videos he wants he's

right he's gonna send them to us yeah

that our listeners could just go and talk about you know how to handle

Lithium batteries properly, so that'll be good.

They have a lot of information they want to share with our

Yeah, no, they're great man.

I if it wasn't for Heights I would have been a firefighter.

I'm sure that if that's the only thing that would have kept you away I think so too.

I wouldn't go for you saw that picture that Nick showed us No things are just and you're just up I don't have that chromosome

no

Wow.

Like I said, I'd be great for like grass fires.

But why do we need that?

I mean, what's the tallest building?

Well, eight stories is 80 feet.

So it's Bellin.

That'd be the.

Yeah.

Bellin's the highest.

The high hospital.

Yeah.

I thought this one over here, the Bellin building, raised a block away.

Oh, here.

OK.

Well, that one's higher.

It thinks it's on the hill, sort of.

Yeah.

Well, I guess you want to shoot down 20 feet.

Yeah.

Well, I guess so.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That's high.

Anyway, that's

high.

That's high.

Yeah.

I just, you know.

The hose is like 70 feet.

What am I doing up here?

No, I mean, I'm sure they got that all squared away.

Well, it's pretty cool though with some of the new things they've got.

No, I know

there's it.

We didn't even get to the

that was to Todd Todd next time schedule them for like an hour.

Yeah.

No.

Well, you could have kept him around for this.

So they had to go.

They had to go.

They had to go.

I scheduled them and they said 722 when I saw that they have something at 730.

All right.

We'll

get them on soon.

We'll get them.

And they said they'd like to come back.

Well, I want to talk to those guys.

about a little bit more was the uh the water you know they they have their own boat oh do

they

yeah they do i

don't think i've ever

seen

it yeah it's not

there

with the big water cannons yeah

they they've got to fight

wow

so they've got to rescue from the water we should talk about if they

now that i could do

i

was just gonna say you don't like heights but maybe you could do that but you

don't swim swim

world's big like a PT 109 Jimmy

can't go up

high Japanese.

Got the bad hip.

Yeah, just report on it the next day.

But those are always cool in New York.

We were actually in New York one time when I don't know is when an ocean liner comes in or something and they salute it or and they fired off all those.

Yeah, that's yes.

That was cool.

You can do that with that's not why you get a fireboat.

But yes, that that's

still looks cool.

It

looks cool to welcome the ship.

Yeah.

Yeah.

But I don't know how many, I don't really use that a lot.

I don't know if we have a lot of, if we've ever fought a fire from the water.

I got the question asked out.

Maybe a grass fire, I don't know.

I don't

think

so.

I don't know, maybe that'd be interesting though.

We'll

talk to them about next, that lithium batteries.

We'll

make

a list and then we'll

forget where we put it when we're in next time.

Not even a

question.

They do have the boat, I know that.

Wow, that would be so much fun to go on.

That would be fun, yeah.

I'll tell you what, the boat you want to go on is that police boat.

Yeah,

I

see

that would go up and down here.

And that

thing is good.

I don't know what, two, I don't know what, there's a Mercury's on the back, but that's fast.

Yeah.

I can't do that.

Gizmo says happy anniversary, guys.

Thank you, Gizmo.

Is it officially our anniversary today?

Yesterday.

Yesterday

was okay.

Kind of came and went

though.

Yeah, I thought he was going to walk over us.

We talked about that last

night.

She

said that, you know.

That he's going to bring us

stuff.

But it was nice though, Sage called.

Make

a nice

little

quiche.

Yeah, Sage

called though and that was nice.

Did he call you?

You know, I think he did add my phone up.

I don't think we want to hear from him right now.

He

did call,

man.

I'm just kidding.

But that was a quick two years, I mean.

Yeah,

it's true.

Time goes faster, right?

It's true

percent of your.

But we get is Naomi here, Todd?

Awesome.

We got Naomi Mose, who was just an unbelievable artist.

And she runs the art garage.

Yeah.

Really, really good at everything she does for that.

Got this thing.

Remember on emergency at Johnny Gage?

They always had guys cooking.

Jim, could you you could be doing that?

That's right, you could be the cook.

You could be the cook.

I'd like to do that.

Mino, you could tidy up.

Really?

Take, sample, sample.

You

think I'd be the guy to tidy up,

Todd?

No.

What do you tell me almost every day?

I know exactly where you've been.

I

literally on my vacation got a note.

I walked in and there was cream around the blah, blah, blah.

There was open packets of sugar and Jim left his coffee mug out.

Yeah, I know.

I know.

I

know.

That's why we love

you.

But we got this great segment coming up.

It's called I am the Community.

It's brought to you by Insight Eye Care.

Sawyer Street in Oshkosh and Chain Drive in Ampton and Naomi, who is just an incredible artist.

She'll tell us about her later project, but she does so much good for the art garage here in Green Bay, which is such a great area.

And it's on that part of the town that was kind of neglected.

After a while I mean industry was there and then that kind of went away and Be at the buildings and good bones, but the buildings are awesome and she's taken over a couple for her art garage And I just think it's amazing what she has done to bring

Local art and let people have a chance of venue and there's more than just

art in there I mean they and we're gonna talk about that but people need to support those things and you know It's what a difference it can make if another 20 30 people show up for some of these events That's what we need to a little bit more and then the city needs to put a little bit more infrastructure in there to call attention to it when you drive by it looks nice, but different lighting some different yeah curb appeal

Then we got Mike Steepak from Park Sports coming up today and Ashley from Downtown Green Bay.

That's an interesting thing.

They want everybody to sing.

You see that?

This is gonna be good.

Yes.

No audience.

We want everybody to attend to participate.

Yeah.

I like that.

That's a welcoming thing.

I think that's

cool.

Bring your

earplugs.

Wow.

Wow.

Happy anniversary to

you.

Back after this.

the desert's a bad man.

I breathed a mountain airman.

I've traveled life ahead my share man.

I've been everywhere.

From local stories to local voices, we're shining a spotlight on what matters right here in northeast Wisconsin.

It's more than just talk.

It's about connecting with the community.

This is Mino and the Mayor.

Now, here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back.

We are very proud and honored for I on the community brought to by inside I care Sawyer Street, Nash gosh and chain drive and Ampton improving lines by improving site and we have an awesome person on right now Naomi mose from the art garage Gallery in Green Bay, but you're doing stuff all over and you're just showing us this Titan missile that you're building right now

I'm a nuclear physicist That's

incredible what you're doing.

It's 10 feet

She's gonna be 10 feet tall.

The diameter and that's not that wide.

No, no,

she's

not a big fat

lady.

It's not a totem pole, but it's like it's 10 feet tall and you're honoring.

Well, it's part of a big project part of that Depeer is doing.

Actually definitely Depeer is funding it.

And it's part of that whole development behind Stellas.

chop house, pages and pours, uh, bona fide juicery and, uh, uh, shanta colesa studio.

They're putting in benches, planters, gonna have mirror.

They have the mural already from Andrew Linskins and my 10 foot tall, uh, woman of mother of the earth is going to be there.

She's going to be holding a fawn and she's, I want her to be a little bit more ethnic.

So I think she's going to be very nice.

You can capture it.

You can

capture it.

You can shoot some pictures here.

I don't

know if Todd can get that.

The guy's got to see some pictures, everybody.

Are you showing that

picture?

I mean, because we'll put it on our website.

That's up to you.

Sure.

I can't get it to you.

I'd love to.

This, I mean, that's really cool that DPR, and we love any place that listens to us.

But no, DPR is to honor the...

the history here, the

heritage and

get back to that.

And I think that's really cool that you, it's your design, but that you have this mother earth holding a fawn.

I mean, that really kind of does the whole circle.

Thanks.

Well, it kind of, the whole theme of that, that back area is called the urban forest.

So I'm also working, there's another artist, Shanna Colts, one of my good friends who I've did the art alley with over by Nicky's power and grill.

I was talking about that earlier.

She and I did the collaboration there.

She has her own commission, but she's doing her own digital photography, kind of artistic photography.

So it's going to be there too.

Isn't

that great when a community steps up?

on the art, like definitely to Pierre, of course, get quickly doing that and

anything she touches.

That little town has getting a lot of awards for what they do.

As it should.

And you have a lot of eye candy driving around when you go through

that.

But even when I looked or when I did that book signing behind bosses, which I still think was a horrible mistake Green Bay did by letting them go.

That's an iconic.

But anyway, they had a book signing and it was the same night as their

Like their farmers market type

thing

and just sit in the back.

It would have been just parking lots.

They turned into this really cool thing.

Yeah, they really do.

They're just high charged.

They understand the value of art.

And

they're not alone.

Green Bay's coming along too.

We were getting there.

Green Bay's coming along.

Oshkosh has done a really good

job.

And some of these smaller communities, I don't want to discount smaller, 10, 12,000, but Nina Monashia, they get people like you that are like, hey, look, this.

This is not only great, as you said, eye candy, but it reduces crime.

It brings in a better clientele in terms of

creative people.

There's that personal neighborhood pride.

People want to take care of the sculptures and the murals.

They don't want to do vandalism.

They don't want to do things like that.

And don't you, if you're living in a community where everybody keeps their homes nicer, it makes you feel like I need to keep up with everything else too.

and I see that happening in Green Bay as well.

So

the art garage is where you're headquartered?

Well, no, I'm not

headquartered.

I said she

was the owner and she's

golden.

No, no, no, no, no.

I'm not the owner.

Yeah, the Wendy Wimmer shimmer.

I said, if I had to start being

specific on this show now, I might as well give up my career.

And Lizzie Olsen's our executive director.

She's the one that has got to get the credit for all the things that are happening right now.

I'm just a simple board member.

Well,

we could do it without a good board.

Artist of the board member.

Yeah.

Your art displays you have there, but it's more than just the visual art.

I mean, you can.

Oh yeah.

We have the spoken word with music and right now saw is going on.

And John, you've talked about your support for that saw summer art workshops.

If you have children that are just sitting around all summer twiddling their thumbs, please check us out.

We do have a few openings yet.

It's very successful for us, but.

the more we want to get art to all the children.

Art is so good for everybody.

We just talk about the cities and how when we have art in our cities, how it creates an energy.

Absolutely.

A good energy.

Absolutely.

It's like putting on a little nicer pair of clothes when you go out instead of just looking like a slob or something.

Which I do.

I think

sometimes art, if the parents weren't in art,

They don't think their kid can be, and their kid can be super talented in art.

Oh gosh, I've seen that a

lot.

I can see it in my house.

But it's amazing, and if they can just get that exposure once to the art garage, or to someone like you, and that can open up.

A whole world for them.

And it's not if I just want to say this because Jim and I came to one of your events.

And it

wasn't because I've done other art things at certain places.

There's a little bit of a, what are you doing here?

Kind of nose in the air sort of thing thing.

Okay.

You guys were just the opposite.

Exactly the opposite, which was so cool.

We just want to get everybody involved with us.

And you appreciate people

being there.

We really do.

Because that's the essence of what we are is about

making other people happy and feel good.

Yes, we want to make a low income with it, but I'll tell you what.

We're fine with that.

We get the good endorphins from it.

Absolutely.

And we don't have enough time to go through everything, but the website, people just, this art garage, where do we go just to see what's going on this week?

Not the website, but the reason I'm really here is I have a couple of big things I want to talk about events that I'm affiliated with.

Number one is the art garage has their annual board meeting.

And you came to it last year.

I appreciate that.

It's this Saturday from four to six.

And we'll talk about what we accomplished this last year.

We're having big things happening there.

We're really getting solvent and being healthy.

And with Lindsay as our leader.

I've seen such great growth.

We've created such a niche that hadn't been there that

people that are

really interested

in.

Well, people forgot about us for a while.

In the beginning, I think we had a big hoohaha and then it kind of went down.

It depends, I guess I'd have to say depends on the people that are involved with it too.

Sure.

People talk about nonprofits.

Well, they need money.

You

know,

I mean, people think I just, that just drives me crazy.

I think it's one of the worst.

names we have for an industry is non-profit.

You need to make money.

I mean, because you reinvest your money.

You don't pay dividends

like some

of us in private sector do.

So I just think it's, I think that's fine that you say you're solvent.

And because some of these non-profits are just struggling and struggling.

And if you're making money, people like to give you money if you're making money.

It's weird.

People are.

They want to bet on a winner.

They do.

And they do.

So if you can say, look, we've got.

X amount in the bank, they're like, okay, you guys are gonna be around.

I'm happy to donate.

But if you say, look, if we don't get some money, we

close our doors.

It's

the last cause.

And I think you're, I'm glad to hear you've turned the corner because that did get a little quiet or not dormant, but it got a little quiet.

But okay, well, that's great.

So this board, this four to six thing is for anyone to come and

listen to your successes.

Yeah, every year we need to have one public board meeting.

Yeah, you do.

And so Wendy's prepared a great presentation and Lindsay and Wendy's our president.

And Lindsay Olson is our executive director, as I said.

We're going to have a Shakuta Reboard, raffles and prizes and things.

We really enjoyed it there last year.

Oh yeah, it

was fun.

It was good energy, wasn't it?

Yeah, it was

great.

So four to six

right here

on Main Street.

Right on Main Street.

Yep, okay.

I know I've asked you this before.

What was that building?

Any idea what year it was built?

No, but...

It was a canning company.

Yeah.

Oh, and then Dean's ice cream was right next to it.

Okay.

Yeah, that's right.

That's

right.

That's right.

Okay.

I barely remember that because

I love that building.

Yeah, I do too.

The whole

neighborhood is

cool.

It is very cool.

And we have the compound, which is right next door now.

They bought the building and so we lease back.

So that's another reason why we're more solvent now.

Explain that please.

Well, when you have a big, huge building like that, you're not really utilizing the other side, the other space.

You're paying all that for all that infrastructure and you don't need it.

But what is the compound?

What are they doing though?

I mean

they have event space right and they have been doing a lot of event spaces had one last weekend And they were here and they have a coffee shop in there too, right?

Yeah, the

two I love that little niche part of town

it is and Main Street is actually the arts district.

Did you know that

I did not

well that's it's actually labeled the arts district

Okay, but we have to put some infrastructure in there to call

people who drive by and walk by that

it is the

artistic, you know, like you go, there's arts districts everywhere in the

United

States.

But to call it is one thing.

And I think that's, I think you're right.

I mean, nobody's questioning that.

But I think there just has to be a little bit more infrastructure done, either lighting or landscaping or pavers, something

to

say, like, when you step into on that sidewalk, well, this is different.

Oh, that's in the arts district, you know, and that

doesn't

cause the fortune to.

change that white sidewalk into a red or blue sidewalk.

It doesn't.

I mean,

you can...

Tint it.

That's what they do, and that stuff lasts.

So you're right.

It is the arts district, but I think we just have to make a commitment to the infrastructure out there to make it more of an identity.

It's cool lighting like they did in Oshkosh.

You could do some really cool lighting over there.

And then you say, I'm in this district.

I get it.

You know what

I mean?

Well, there's some people involved with that district.

Hope they're listening.

What else are you going on?

Well, the other thing is, I am, as you know, John, I'm a member of the Green Bay Art Colony, the oldest women's art group.

And we have a wonderful exhibition.

People don't

realize how old this thing

is.

That's over a hundred years old.

That's something.

That's awesome.

Start out with a bunch of cultured ladies having tea parties and painting together.

So it's developed into many multimedia artists now.

We have 28 women artists.

It's all women.

Anyway, we were honored this year to be the first local group to show at the Mulva Center in Dupere.

That's

cool.

And we have our exhibit up.

It's called Art of the Aviary.

And at the exhibition dates are present, the present to August 13th.

Do we keep that here?

Yes.

We have got to get more people into the Mulva Center.

I

know.

That is a beautiful building, and it's for everyone.

And

I think, and look, I love the design, love everything about it, but I think it maybe is a little intimidating, it's not the right word, but I think it's ostentatious, it's a big building, and it's like, it's

not like- And ultra-modern too.

It is, but I think- Which is awesome.

It is, but I think they want it to be like a library.

Like, you don't have any issues walking into a library.

No.

Nobody does,

but that's what it really is.

It's a public-

not public because there's something's going to pay for it, but the food, everything about that is great.

And I just think we got to get more people in there.

So this will get draw some people

through

August 13.

Yeah,

correct.

We had a wonderful reception last Friday.

We had a very massive turnout.

We're very excited about

that.

And just to read an exhibition of artistic interpretations showcasing the Green Bay Art Colony.

Yes.

And that's awesome.

They're going to get some high school choirs in there.

They just, again, that's just a beautiful building and, you know, really privately funded.

And Art

of the Avery.

So it's all bird themes?

Yep.

Birds or flight or whatever.

You know, I used to mount.

I used to be

a... Wait a minute.

What?

Oh.

Careful what you say.

What was that now?

This

is Monchal.

Who did you?

I used to mount Blackbirds.

Oh.

Oh.

Why?

It just... Because I was a tax... I was trying to be a taxidermist.

Oh.

Okay.

So

Naomi

this is are you there explaining it or how do people learn about it or is it self-guided?

You're sticking around the right.

Okay.

All

right.

Sure.

Okay.

We'll hit on that Great having you here Naomi

mose

art garage.

I in the community back right after

this

And Charlie's got a good wife.

And after tonight, she'll no longer be helping the days.

Hey,

welcome back, man of the mayor here at Trekker Thursday with Naomi Mosom, the art garage who's doing great things.

Naomi, I'm just going to turn it back over to you one more time with all the goggles.

There

you go.

All right.

Just think you got so much

going on.

You just put them over your ears.

There

you go.

Okay guys.

The creative artist.

Go ahead

and

tell me what else is on

your summer schedule here.

Well, as the guys mentioned, I'm working on that large sculpture project for Depeer and that's going to be finished by the end of July.

This is going

to be a huge.

dedication

to that because that's so cool.

Tina Quigley, the doctor, definitely Dipir is

going to be.

Everybody knows her.

Yeah, she's a big name.

And she used to be, she

used to be downtown Green Bay.

Yeah, she did.

We miss her.

Yes.

Anyway,

that's great.

Well, good.

Well, you make sure you get back to us on that because that

whole concept is cool.

No,

but

I think that's, that's going to be great.

And I'm really looking forward to seeing that.

Now when you have these kind of projects like that, where is your your client base?

So to speak is it is it a wide-ranging area?

Or is it more Green Bay D. Peer, Ledgeview, Howard-ish?

Because you

guys bring something really unique to this area.

Thanks.

I think especially with the collaboration work I've been doing with my friend, Shanna Colts, you have a story behind the picture, the stories, a story behind the artwork and

I think it's more interesting when you have a sculpture with flat work or 2D work than just a sculpture or just 2D work.

And so it's really, I think, pretty cool.

Well, we had John McGivran come out and photograph and put us on the air for one of his...

He doesn't have too much energy.

No,

no, no, no.

That's bottle some of that.

That guy's awesome.

Yeah, he is awesome.

He just talks to you like he looks you in the eye and he's like, you're the most important thing that's on his mind.

For the

next half hour, there's nobody else in the world but you and he's a great, great interviewer.

And he makes you feel like he really builds you up.

Yeah, and he's...

funny and he's,

you

could do that, John.

He is, he's, he's a good guy.

Love

him.

So he was out there and he, is that aired?

Yes.

You can check it out.

The Dupir X episode is actually from, I think it aired last year, but I've, people have told me they've seen it rotating.

I've

seen it.

It's a great episode.

He goes to St.

Norbert.

He does all that kind of just, you know, I gotta see this.

I haven't seen it.

Oh, you didn't know that?

You can go on my website too, NaomiMoesArts.com, and you can see it there too.

I mean, he's done a few things in this community, Green Bay, and I'm sure Ashwabra and stuff, and

goes

with the truck drivers with the Schneider.

Oh, I didn't know that.

Well, he'll go, he'll do anything to bring out the unique best things in your community.

I just

love him.

I

think he's, he does a great,

great job.

He's been great for the Midwest, that's

for sure.

All

right, so you got this one.

One more

big

one here.

Well, and then, sorry, everybody.

I have also been honored to be part of the Summer, Art, Fall, Summer and Fall Sturgeon Bay Art Crawl.

So this is a little bit of the area, but I'm one of 38 artists that are showing in the Sturgeon Bay area.

That means it goes all the way from Sturgeon Bay to that, Sevastopol and all that, all of that.

That's awesome.

And it's a weekend, so.

For anybody thinking about popping up to Dore County, July 12th and 13th, you don't have to go too far from Green Bay because Sturgeon Bay is, you know, an hour away.

It's a nice little drive.

And the hours are from 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m.

daily.

You know, there are maps all over.

If you go to Sturgeon Bay Art Crawl dot com.

And get 27 different topics

you can go

to.

Right.

Wow.

Now that's cool.

So there's

an art crawl like, okay, then you go place to place.

Is

it 27 different artists?

Yes.

Wow.

Now that's fun.

Yeah, we have 38 artists total, but some of them aren't doing the summer show.

So yeah, it's just, it's just great.

And they,

you talk about you, you're working in arts district at the Eric Raj, but if you look, Door County, Sturgeon Bay, that's kind of an art community.

I mean, they lean into

art.

There's some amazing artists there.

I'm little compared to those people.

I'm just looking at some of their stuff on their

little pictures.

This is really cool.

No, they're a glassblower.

And he's going to be having demonstrations.

Jeremy Papulco and his wife, Stephanie Trenchard.

All right, that's at 12th and 13th.

That's coming up.

Yep.

That's

not very far.

That's why I want to talk about it.

OK, yeah,

we'll get people up there for that.

But we have to get people.

A lot of people are going to go to that

thing.

It's got its own draw already.

But because I'm honored to be part of that, I really want to talk about it.

Where are you at?

I am in the Tambourine Lounge, number nine.

Okay.

And there's four other artists in that group.

All right.

In that, in that building.

But that's just got to be, you're not going to see all that in

one day.

So I just, we have to make sure we can see you.

All

right.

Well, I would appreciate it.

That would make my day.

This is cool, oh man.

I'm serious.

All right.

We can see that.

Would you say it is surgeonbaidartcrawl.com?

Yes.

Okay.

All right.

Let's.

website to pull it all up and there's pictures of all of our work.

And where I'm going to be is in a really nice nucleus of six artists.

There's other studios.

Hey,

we're so well known for packers and drinking beer and brats and whatever, whatever.

There's an art colony up here that's extraordinary, isn't there?

There is.

And not just the visual arts.

I mean, there's the music arts, there's dancing, there's performing, there's just...

Look, Johnny and I are just trying to elevate that a little bit more.

We'll take nothing away from sports.

We love sports.

We've had some great

athletes.

I love sports, too.

I know.

But there's

more to life than sports.

And I

think we just want to, especially for the youth that

I want

to play football.

Well, now there's art.

There's dancing.

There's

music.

Well, haven't I heard some football players took our dance class when they're younger and it's helping with balance.

Absolutely.

No question.

The executives that took music.

Doctors, this guy across the street who

runs this

$6 billion company,

he's an

unbelievable musician.

So yeah, and it all works together.

And

people like

you make people more aware of it.

And I think that's awesome.

Thank you.

So this weekend though, not July?

Yeah, is it?

No.

The open house is the fourth to the sixth to learn about what you're doing at the art garage.

And that's, no,

that is this Saturday, the 28th.

This Saturday.

Okay, this Saturday.

Okay, good.

And that's open to the public.

It's open to the public, the more the merrier.

And what you've done and where you're going.

Correct.

All right, cool.

All right.

Thank you, everybody.

Next year, can I bring some of my silo wood coffee tables?

Say yes,

just to get them off the air.

There you go.

I would love to see it.

Yes, sir.

Thank you.

Thank

you.

You're

the best.

It's great having you on here.

Check it out.

Thank you.

I'm honored that you asked.

Naomi Moe's

Art Garage.

It's fantastic.

Mike Steve Pack from Fox Sports will be joining us

next.

And I and the community is brought to you by Inside8Care, Sawyer Street in Oshkosh, Chain Drive in Appleton, improving lives by improving sight.

More with Mino and the Mayor coming

up.

Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

And here are your hosts.

John Minow and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back.

Special thanks to Naomi Mose from the Art Garage and a whole bunch of other things that she does.

Really great having her on here.

We want to promote a lot more about the great events she has coming up.

The community wouldn't happen with

all people like

her.

Absolutely.

Her team makes a better play.

There's just

so many people that.

Yep.

Another one that's like that.

Well, sort of.

Mike Steve.

Sort of.

Big Mike.

This is the guy.

Gentlemen, good morning.

Good morning,

sir.

How are you?

I am wonderful.

Thanks for asking.

So were

you at that game yesterday that was legendary?

I was.

Well, it was supposed to be legendary.

I don't know if it really was, but it was exciting to be there.

A lot of people with us.

And it was a good ball game.

And the Miz lived up to his reputation and pitched extremely well.

Scanes didn't have his best stuff at all from the get go.

So it was early on.

You knew it was not going to be this spectacular matchup of pitching performances, but at least the Brewers did win.

Pitt played well, didn't get a lot of hits, but had timely hits in the four run inning.

And it was a nice win.

But this guy, again, knock on wood and whatever, whatever.

I mean, it reminds me of like when Dwight Gooden first came into Major League Baseball or one of those guys where it's like, hey, we can't quite hit this guy.

Right.

I mean, he had his good stuff yesterday.

He was triple digits from the get-go, threw in some great off-speed stuff, and had eight strikeouts in his five innings.

And it was great to be able to see this young talent on the Milwaukee side.

Yeah, because we've seen her against them a lot.

Right.

Some of you against somebody.

Hey, Michael, how's it looking?

What are you doing this fall?

I'll be starting yet another season of working with the NFL on Fox in September, looking forward to the new challenges that the season will bring and just trying to prepare for that in the weeks prior and enjoying summer right now.

You got a pack of games?

Unknown.

We don't really know our schedule at all.

Oh, really?

No, it's just way too early.

There is a production seminar that is in California the first week of August, and that's where we will get our actual assignments for the first probably three to four weeks.

Things could slip out prior to then, and we may get an idea to where we are week one.

The consensus of our crew is going to be in Seattle, but don't know for sure, but it's always an exciting time to find out where you're going to be and the teams you're going to cover.

So don't know yet, but

It was coming down the pipe.

Did you, hey, you were here for the draft, right?

I was not.

Okay, well, you weren't here for the draft.

I was in Italy.

Oh, that's right.

Okay,

how's Pope Leo doing?

We talked about him earlier this morning.

Okay, so Jim wants to get the Pope to level.

Let me explain this.

Go

ahead.

All right, we'll make this quick, Mike.

But, Mike, we have the... He wants to know if you have any pull.

Well, a little bit.

He was just there.

The shrine,

we have... Did you ask if I have papal pull?

Yes.

Right.

So, we have the shrine here in Champion, right?

Yes.

Okay.

Which is sought after.

People come from all over the world to come to the shrine.

It's the only designated shrine in the United States, right?

Everybody goes to Fatima and down to Mexico.

And this is...

Something that we want to get really certified by by Rome by the Pope now that this guy's from Chicago Johnny and I and Todd's in now even though he's Lutheran is Joining the team and we want to bring

the convert for us.

Yeah, he is just for that week We want to get Pope the Green Bay to come to the shrine and have mass at Lambeau Field.

Are you in?

I come We're an altar boy,

of course

Okay, okay.

See we

have another altar boy because

John I volunteer to be one of his altar boys

Yeah, and I my brother's a priest so he's gonna come con celebrate with with the Pope So we're putting the team together, but we got one step first We have to get clearance from the bishop and the annuncio.

Yeah, and that's my job.

So just hang tight put that on your calendar Upcoming visit with the Pope and I'll give you the

day

time

That would be that would be awesome and stranger things have happened

I know.

Couldn't you see

a mass at Lambeau Field?

I could.

I mean, I'm envisioning right now.

Well, he did it at Den, not this poll, but they were there at Denver.

I think New England had one.

Did New England

do

it?

Yeah.

So this could, so Mike, we need your papal connection.

Because you were there last week, not last week, three weeks ago, because you missed the draft.

That must have been.

Wait a minute.

Wait a minute.

Wait a minute.

We were there.

Turn the funeral the day that the the pope passed.

Yeah, it's surreal.

Oh, that's right.

You were there Wow Yeah, we did and you know, we just obviously as the world had seen a day and a half earlier He was he gave a blessing and he did in St.

Peter's Square and met with our vice president and then all of a sudden we're at this Wow vineyard retreat Having a cup of coffee.

We look up at the big screen and we saw it in in Italian that the

In the Pope had passed and there was it was surreal.

Yes, but while you were there lifelong That's

nothing to do with it Okay, but hey Mike my dream is to go to Italy you've been there Where do I stay off?

What's where should I go?

Cuz I want to go to northern Italy where my family's all from but I the Rome aspect of it doesn't do it for me.

Oh come on I

think I think a trip to Rome is

Necessary fundamental has to happen returning to Rome not necessarily because there's so many other Extraordinary places within the country, but no Rome Rome is impossible to beat because of the history and the culture and the sheer Magnificence of that city.

It's unbelievable and you go into this cathedral and you think oh my god There's nothing more beautiful than this and you go to the next one and it's it's just that there that's their industry and it's It's unbelievable there.

I just loved it

I use this phrase a lot and I'm going to stop using it, but jaw dropping is everywhere you look in that country and in Rome especially because of the beauty and the magnificence of the architecture and the streets and the sections of the city.

But that said, John, there are many other beautiful, remarkable jaw dropping portions of that country.

But back to Rome, and then the food is great.

the wine is awesome, and you walk everywhere, which is, it's a healthy community, I think.

I've been here a couple times.

I had those things you mentioned, the eating and the drinking, the pasta and the wine.

I had my full.

In fact, I think I was asked to leave a couple places, which is not unusual.

However, I lost three

pounds on the trip.

See, because of walking.

Exactly.

Yeah, that's

awesome, Mike.

All right.

All right, anyway, the draft, we'll talk about that.

Yeah, we know you got another Brewer's game today, or what do you got going on here?

No, no, they don't play today, John.

Oh, that's right.

Good day off.

Hey, Mike, are you into the afternoon games or do you like the night games?

I love

them.

I love afternoon games.

Man, me too.

Unless I have plans to stay the night, then it doesn't matter.

But no, no, no.

We, uh, we, uh, spent, and yesterday, uh, we, we bought the tickets, uh, plenty in advance.

Not knowing, of course, the, the matchup was going to be what it was.

But Wednesday is a half price tickets.

So I did have 48,000.

Did I read that right?

For about 42 42,000 for a midweek game.

I mean, that was yeah.

Wednesday afternoon game.

Yeah.

Don't you look around?

Don't you people work?

It was a lecture crowd.

Yeah.

I mean, that was one of the biggest games in major like regular season history.

I've seen in a while for two young phenoms to go head

to head.

Correct.

The headlines were there and.

As I said, both pitchers came out.

Skeens had issues early on, control problems through 51 pitches in his first two innings, and really never had his stuff.

But the Miz was strong from the get-go and five really great innings.

Oh, and by the way, the son of a legendary basketball player from Green Bay.

What's the fourth player taken in the NBA last night?

Right.

Nipple.

Isn't

that something?

Not only one young man two young men from Duke both went

back and just a little over a year ago.

He was playing against like Green Bay Preble Right

unreal it is a phenomenal Occurrence

right so Mike you got you know Fox Sports the leader in that what are you looking forward to this NFL season something that you're like I can't wait for this Some matchups

on the crew seeing the fellas being with them.

Yeah, because that is as important to me

as anything else, the camaraderie we have, the friendships that we have, the communal effort that we have putting on a broadcast and preparing and researching, and the laughs that are endless.

Certainly there are elements like that everywhere in this world, everywhere.

But when you travel from different cities all around the country to meet up in one central location and work from there,

and work on a network television and do professional sports it is never lost remarkable that is that i'm involved with that i'm i've never lost after the thought i've never lost my uh... enthusiasm for that and uh... that's what i look forward to the most senior players of course new offenses uh... the stadiums are always great to visit but truth be told it's the it's the crew

that puts the game on that makes it all worthwhile.

That says a lot about you too.

And we talk about people and I just want to leave this on a happy note, but we talk about people that maybe depression, frustration, but socialization, being with a team is so important in life, not just when you're a kid playing high school or it's when you get older too.

And I just, I think that's great.

I commend you.

I thought you were going to say, I can't wait for this matchup or this quarterback or this stadium, what they did.

But to talk about the team effort that you have with your friends, that's

That says a lot about you.

That's good to hear.

That's great to hear.

It's great to hear.

I hope everybody sees life like

that.

Having a purpose in life is the most important thing we have.

Because I think no matter what level of life you're in, what you do for a living, whether you're a student, whether you work in a factory, you work at the arts department, whatever it is, if you don't have a purpose in the morning to get up and do something,

And it doesn't have to be anything high-faluting or anything extreme.

Just a purpose is the most important thing we have in my opinion.

That's the whole thing

to

thrive.

Great advice.

A lot of wisdom.

Always a pleasure having you on, my friend.

Thank you, boys.

Have a great

weekend and enjoy the summer when it comes

back.

And we'll let you know when the pulp's here.

Alright, I'll probably know it, but

please

do give me a

clue.

Get

your

hassock ready to bring

it out of

retirement.

It's cassock.

Yeah, mine was retired

in

the Vatican.

It's called a hassock.

Yeah, and a scapular.

Alright, thank you, Mike.

See you buddy, you're the best.

I'm out.

Get rid of these guys.

Was it hassock or cassock?

Hassock.

Hassock is the

little ball.

I told you, I told that priest that mine was retired at the Vatican, right?

Yeah, he did.

That they don't even have a wall to blow up.

He didn't know that If they did I'd be

in it.

So yeah, I got my my scapula's retire to Yeah, John, it's like I didn't know they had something like that's like Did you when

you?

Communion you had that yeah that okay.

Those things are cool

too.

So

now that yeah, there's

something wait a minute There was some motioning

what when you

it was a brass

with

a wooden

handle

that you held when people-

For the host?

They used to take communion on the top.

So you would drop the host to the ground.

When we were kids.

And you had to- Did you ever catch one?

Because if they put it on

the top of

those old ladies would sometimes

write their thumbs and

shake and then you had the

piece of

droppin' and you're like- You jabber the jungler a little bit.

But you couldn't like to go, got it!

You couldn't do

that.

You had to just like give it back to the priest and- Oh yeah.

Oh, we got the Ultra Boy stories for you.

I was

an-

I was an- I was- I'm in the Ultra Boy Hall of Fame.

I would have- No.

If there

was one- My cast act's been retired.

I'm telling ya.

Back after this.

Sometimes,

because it worth a dime If you don't

pay your bills Sometimes the lights all shining on me Hey, welcome back, my name is the Mayor, here on Trucker Thursday

Todd, you said Mike Steepak called back to correct us on something.

Well, he wanted you to know that, that little thing you were talking about that you apparently, is that where you're carrying the host down then?

Is that what you do?

No, it

was there in case they dropped it,

in case it pulled out of their mouth, it was always dropped.

And Mike called it and said, tell Mino and the mayor it's called a pallet.

No, it's not.

But, okay, I'll, we'll get back to Mike.

He isn't, he's not, I don't think he's in the Ulterboy Hall of Fame.

I don't think he is.

So,

well,

okay.

Are you?

Yeah.

There isn't such a thing.

There is.

I told the priest that.

That's what we'll do with the fire station down here, right?

You'll get the fire station.

We'll do a Hall of Fame for... I

like this.

I like this a lot.

We get Ashley joining us, and I think Ashley's thinking, what in the heck did I just walk

into?

This is very out of context, so I don't know exactly what's going on here.

Midwest Music Connection.

I'm not even going to try your last name, and I know offense.

No, just Ashley from Midwest Music Connection.

I answered to that.

That's fine.

All

right.

Ashley K. One day quart this.

You were telling us during the break and I said, no, hold off.

This is too good to tell us to put it now.

Tell us about this event you're doing that's coming up.

Sure.

So this one day choir is organized by myself and my sister, Jennifer.

Okay.

And we basically get people together to sing for just a couple hours.

Okay, now let me just back up just for your short Midwest music connection.

Is that your company?

That is our organization.

Your organization, okay.

Yep.

And it's very low commitment because we're all busy adults, right?

Okay.

And

we send out practice videos ahead of time so people can practice and learn their parts.

And then we just get together for an afternoon and sing together.

So it's very community-based, you don't have to be a professional, and it's for connection and just for the joy of singing.

So when you get back together, it's four-part harmony

then?

Right now we're doing three-part harmony.

Yeah, we need some more guys.

Send some guys our way, then we can add a second guy

there.

Take these two with

you.

Don't expect

much.

You're welcome

to

come.

What what is the song that you're going to?

Sure sure so usually to pick two pieces to do one is more of a down tempo Ballad and then one is more of like a power anthem.

So this time we are singing titanium, but we arranged it ourselves.

So it's more of a down tempo soulful cool

A ballad and then we're doing from now on from The Greatest Showman, which is an uptempo, dancing

in the Isles

type thing.

Yeah, so we do have like... So it is, it's a contrast.

We

hear that.

So yeah, it's a contrast of...

one slow song, one fast song, and then we run the pieces, we run the parts, kind of have a practice run through, and then we sing.

And it's, there's no audience, that's the thing.

Everybody who shows up sings.

Yes, everybody who shows up sings, and a lot of these people don't know each other.

Right, do they?

Does anybody solo?

Like, never enough?

Right.

The greatest showman, never enough, which is like one of my favorites, but that whole movie where...

Play, I guess.

Always.

The soundtrack is on repeat at my house.

It is.

It's great.

Yes.

Does anybody solo or is it all?

It is.

OK.

That's a really good question.

And we actually just talked about this.

My sister and I.

Because I'll come,

but

I'm

just kidding.

Everybody that comes, everybody's so talented.

And some people have experience, right?

But we decided that there's not gonna be any solos because it goes away from the idea of being one voice, okay?

This is a community.

This is not for showing off really.

A lot of people come just to have this outlet to sing together.

And we don't want to highlight just one person.

So it is definitely a group intimate atmosphere.

Which is great.

And at the end

of the day, that's the best thing to do, although

our egos are gonna get hurt in the beginning.

But that's okay, I'll get through that.

The people who come though, you don't want shower singers in there.

I mean, you want people, you don't want tone deaf people.

I mean, you want

people who can sing.

Okay, well, here's the thing.

Oh, watch it.

Oh, watch it.

That's

what I was talking about.

Is he pointing at me

from behind?

I had to call out my name.

But talk about it.

Sure.

It's for everybody,

but is it?

It's for everyone, yes.

And I think our culture

has it a little backwards where you think you have to be good in order to do something, right?

And no, granted, if you're getting paid to do...

Singing or being an entertainer you have to be kind of good if you're getting paid for it But I think you know if people don't believe they're good at it They just don't do it and that's so sad to me that you lose a lot of the opportunity for the joy and connection the art of music so

really

What you said

is

beautiful.

So we want the people who have experience, that's great.

Yes, we need people to carry, but we also want the people who sing in their cars.

We want you, the people who just enjoy jamming out by themselves.

That's the energy we want, right?

Did you talk

about a guy you sat by in church who just thought he

was

belt and it was... That's kind of

loud.

You know, it's like, and I didn't, you know, it's church.

You really can't say anything.

No.

Yeah.

So, you know, we were Lutheran as we've pointed out this morning, but there's this one old lady, right?

Just, she would sing out and it was always off and...

It would crack my sisters and I am so hard.

My dad, my dad would like elbow us like to stop.

And then all of a sudden you'd look over and dad was bent over, you know, laughing.

Yeah,

totally.

How

was that person?

Oh, you think that I'm tone deaf?

Well, I don't think I know you.

Hey, what about the ages for your group?

Sure.

So we want ages 15 and up because we want adults.

Okay.

Um, and this was beautiful.

We had last time we had a.

daughter, a high school daughter, come with her dad.

So it's something they could do together.

We do have a family that comes, brother, sister, mother.

So it is for adults or- And do they

know the songs are going to be singing before

they come in?

Yes.

So we produce practice videos.

Okay.

So you kind of mentioned earlier, I wasn't sure, but that's okay, go ahead.

My sister's more of the public.

Okay, you're gonna have to hold that.

Hold on a second.

This is really interesting.

It's gonna

be a

fun, it's a cool event.

Midwest Music Connection.

I could see you and your daughter.

I think I could too.

Yeah, and me and my

daughter.

Take Mino and the Mayor on the go with the Civic Media app, live, local, and always streaming.

Download the app, choose WISS or WGBW, and tune in anywhere, anytime.

Now, back to Mino and the Mayor, here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Thank you very much, welcome back Trucker Thursday here, Mino and the Mayor, 97.9 FM WGBW, 98.3, 96.5 FM WISS, and of course, the Civic Media app.

Man, we've had some phenomenal guests today.

Just fantastic.

And Ashley Kay is cream of the crop, I think, with your energy.

Thank you.

Wow.

You have a little energy.

Naomi, I'm sorry, Naomi.

It's a tie.

It's a tie.

Even I thought the Fire

Chief came in

with some energy today.

The impact was awesome.

Yeah.

So we're talking, we'd love events, right?

And Johnny and I

really, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay, we like to talk about what's great about, there's so many things great about.

this whole area, but unique events and you've got, yours is kind of different,

right?

There's nothing like this around the area.

So

let's talk about it again.

I think everyone likes to sing.

Some people can and some people can't.

Did he just do something?

I

can look

at

the recording.

We recorded the show.

It's in this video.

I'm not touching this with a 10 foot pole.

But

you have an event.

That allows people to sing and kind of a little bit professionally

together to bring it

together for three hours and put on a tremendous

Yeah, it's not even a show, because we'd have no audience.

That's the thing.

That's

just kind of keeping me away.

Yeah.

Oh, really?

You want to?

No, I just go ahead.

We do video record it, so we can share it.

Right, that's the audience.

You know?

But we did do, after our last one, we did a poll, and it was very split whether they wanted an audience or not, because it's singing is such a vulnerable thing for people to get up and sing, especially if you haven't done it in a long time.

So in this small group, you kind of have that safety net.

and it's very less intimidating when there isn't.

a bunch of people sitting there expecting.

And again, that's why I think our culture is kind of screwed up, is you have to do it to perform.

And we do it for joy.

I just want to

read your mission statement.

Right.

Not for performance.

No audience.

We encourage all attendees to participate in the music.

Let's make music together.

Yes.

And it's for connection, for meeting like-minded people who are there that enjoy music.

So it's really cool.

Yeah, there's a place on the East Coast that we kind of follow that we're like, oh, that's cool.

Can we bring it to

our area.

And we did.

And the feedback was just phenomenal from like, Oh, I forgot how much I love to sing to life changing.

And I just want to read your

press release here.

Whether you're a seasoned vocalist or just love to sing in the car.

This event is for you with practice videos provided ahead of time.

Participants will arrive ready to sing, connect and celebrate the power of community through music.

This event is all about the joy of singing together says Jennifer Schoeman of Midwest Music.

That's my sister.

Yeah.

Yeah.

She's the public outreach person.

She is even more energized than me.

I'm the behind the scenes person.

So I do all the, the graphics and the editing and the reels.

And I like doing the behind the scenes.

She is like, she's the one that finds our people.

She's the one who

comes out of her shell.

We wanted to create a fun, welcoming space where anyone can come meet new people, make something beautiful in just a few hours.

Don't miss this unique chance to be part of something inspiring and musical.

Bring your voice, bring a friend, and join us for an unforgettable afternoon of harmony and connection.

Find us on Facebook by searching One Day Choir Event Green Bay or email jennifer.shomin at gmail.com

for

more information.

This once again, it's Saturday, June 28th, from 11 to 2 at the Compound in Green Bay.

Right off Main Street.

It's a beautiful space.

It's a big open area with a lot of natural lights.

And the acoustics are awesome.

We love those buildings over there.

And we love that whole neighborhood.

That's the whole arts area, which

is, that's very cool.

It's very fitting.

Right, that you picked that.

Someone's going to, they're listening, like, I want to get the music.

How do they know if they want, you know,

lead tenor, whatever.

I don't know what the categories

are.

You have soprano, alto, and then the guys.

Again, we need more guys than maybe we can split that into two parts, too.

Okay, I got it.

The soprano's part is usually your melody.

It's a little higher, but if you're new to it, we usually suggest the soprano part.

The alto part's a little bit lower, and you're going to find a lot more of those harmonies in there.

So if you want something a little more challenging, one of those songs we're doing, the alto part has some of the melody as well.

I just, they pick one and kind of go with it.

And that's why you can listen ahead of time on the practice videos.

Oh, you send all

three?

We do send all three.

Oh, okay.

Well, that

answers my question.

Yeah.

All right.

Yep.

So it's a playlist on our YouTube page.

Okay.

And we just send you the link.

And then

one that you're comfortable with.

So

I have a

little idea, maybe.

if I can get that information from you.

Maybe

I'll have it here, and then tomorrow morning, you guys can practice

on here.

Oh, that'd be so cool.

Absolutely, I'm

in.

What a great idea.

That's why I'm

the producer

of the show.

We dedicate our last hour of our show on Fridays to music.

Oh, we have Dennis from

the Glam Band

hosted.

We'll

do this

very

bright and early when

nobody's listening.

We'll do it from,

maybe even before we go on the air.

5.50.

Wow.

Really cool that you're doing it.

You got the idea.

You and your sister obviously get along very

well.

Are you

both in

music?

I am.

So I teach.

I teach at Appleton Rock School.

They're actually one of our sponsors.

They also have a Green Bay location.

So check them out.

And we take all ages from preschool to retired folks.

That's what I was

talking to you about,

John.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful people.

I just drove

past them recently.

I saw their building.

OK.

Is it on Mason?

It's on.

This location's on Main Street.

Main Street, yes.

Yep.

So.

Because I've been

to Southern Billboard with the thing.

And it's like, hey, that sounds like

kind of

people we should get on our show.

Yeah.

Yeah.

So I teach there.

And I do therapeutic music for nursing homes and things like that.

So I'm around music all the time.

And my sister just loves music.

And music was our life when we were growing up.

We did choir.

We sang in church.

We did pep band, things like that.

And then after high school, you just kind of stop.

people do, like you kind of get out of it.

And we wanted to have the opportunity to come together to do it again.

People our age, right?

That, you know, may have been out of it for a while, but don't have a whole lot of time to

commit.

I

wish you had more enthusiasm for this.

Yeah, I want to

get up for this.

This

is awesome.

It sells itself.

It really does sell itself.

And you got to be there to, when you're there, it's magical.

Like it really does come together.

Even me and my sister, we just, whoa.

Is there a

cost to the, it's got to be a cost

to this.

We are off taking donations, give as you feel.

So if you go to our Eventbrite event, there's a link for that.

And our suggested donation is $20, because that will help pay for our space, because we are renting the space out.

But we also provide a couple treats.

We have a couple surprises coming in on Saturday.

So we do hope to

give

a little bit so that we can support this event.

The

$40 for date night?

That's a lot

of fun.

Father Daughter is what I was talking about

too.

That's what I was

talking about.

Two people.

Yeah, absolutely.

Because we do, we put a lot of time into this, but we love it.

Like you can just, we really get up.

The music that

you pick, which is, I think that's interesting.

We don't pick, we let the people vote on it.

So the people in our current one day choir, we send feedback forms and then we give them a list of songs and we vote on the next one.

Wow.

Very democratic.

It is.

But we want to serve the people.

Jim's against that.

No, I'm going to tell you what songs.

I'm going to tell you.

I would look at other options.

That's fine.

Wow, that's kind of cool that they picked.

Yeah, we gave them a list that they picked from, but we want to, we want the people to come back, right?

So we want to get- See, there would only be one on my list.

That's called

socialism.

This is the list, there's one.

Everybody

votes.

Right, but last time we did a greatest showman song, we did This Is Me, which is a very power ballad and a power anthem.

And then they wanted to do another greatest showman song because, right, it's so good.

So we're like, okay, I guess we're doing another greatest showman song, but it fits.

really the theme for our songs is kind of like self-empowerment, you know, strength and numbers, community.

I was just gonna say, it seems

like this is the kind of thing that everybody that comes to that and performs, they want that community support and want

to

be a

part

of

something.

The power of song, that's why I said, if you do never enough next year, I'm definitely gonna sing that.

Okay.

What's that by?

It's

great to show man, but it's a lady that sings it.

Hit those high notes.

I know, I'd be

tough.

We got you, we got

you.

But again, what did you say, 16 was the minimum age?

15 and up.

15 and up, okay.

Yep, yep, yep.

This is so cool.

I hope this

is, I mean, we're

glad you're on here.

We're glad to promote.

I hope more people pick up on this because I think there's a lot of people, if they knew about this, they'd be like, hey, let's

do this.

Right, and this is just our second event.

We got together in March to do one, mostly to get some old friends together.

We pulled in some people from the community.

Hey, you wanna join us?

And they're, everybody has such a good time.

They're like, oh.

When's the next one?

When are you doing it again?

I'm like, yes.

Well, what is

Midwest Music Connection that you're wearing on your shirt?

Yes.

That is our organization.

OK.

Because people are like, who are you doing this through?

We're like, well, it's just me and my sister doing this.

We have to name it something.

OK.

So we came up with Midwest Music Connection because we want to expand it to all over.

We want to pull people in.

We have some connections in Madison.

We would love to expand to doing it in another city.

Did you guys either

want to perform professionally at one time?

I mean, I play a lot of weddings, and I accompany people.

Oh, that's what you do?

You sing at weddings?

I mostly play piano.

Oh.

Yeah, yeah.

But I teach piano, I teach voice, I teach ukulele, and a little bit of drums, so.

Wow.

Yeah.

You're

pretty,

that's it.

So I guess I'm professional.

I don't know.

I teach really for self.

Betterment self care self, you know for wellness and outlet a creative outlet.

So that's how I teach What are you doing

next Thursday?

When I

when I sing I hear magic.

Oh, yeah,

I think my voice sounds like butter.

Oh, yes,

you know what I mean?

And

then I love that for you.

I love that other

don't

hear it.

It's lying

Wow, I know we got time.

I'm playing this for you John Mm-hmm to sir with love

I just want her to

okay, okay,

but how do I tell someone who is taking me from crayons to perfume?

Here's my view, okay?

Did he turn off the music or was that John?

I just can't tell.

Ashley's over here.

She's digging a huge smile on her face like

a

teacher would be.

Jim's over here is squinting and wincing at the whole

thing.

Like

the bully of the class.

Exactly.

Yeah.

My job is to encourage you to do what you've got.

We need

more

of you in

the

studio.

Can

you hear every morning?

Oh, thank you.

And it's really when you are...

performing or singing, if you don't have that.

Fun factor, it's no good.

Like you got to sell it, right?

Yeah, yeah when you're into it Other people feed off of that you can tell and that's what makes it good.

You know one reason though I I struggle a little bit sometimes with certain tunes There's time.

Oh, it's called tones.

It might just be out of your vocal range.

Yeah, but you know

what the nuns I had nuns So mean I mean they're like incredible.

You always hear those tourists, but I had the really old nuns with the big old habits Okay,

my dad had a piano teacher was a nun.

She whacked him with a

ruler

The one the one she gave me a D in music told my my mom I was terrible I should never open my mouth and for every class I washed the blackboards Well, the other kids were singing and I was like I was quietly tears my eyes

Washing the

blackboard

I think we've talked so much about religion today.

I

think

The Pope.

We're bringing the Pope.

We're bringing the Pope to Green Bay.

Great.

He can come sing with us.

There you go.

No,

you can say he's going to do Mass at Lambeau Field and you can help

lead one of the choirs.

Oh, yeah.

Let's do it.

We're trying

to

come up with slogans.

Yeah.

We're going to, we'll get you

guys.

You have nothing?

You have nothing?

I'm like, I'm sure you can come up with a couple things.

I

think the Bishop already called us to tell us to knock it off.

Ashley, can you stick around or do you got

to go?

No, I'm here.

You got me.

Yeah, thanks.

Stick around, please.

Coming up tomorrow morning on Mino and the Mayor.

Mark Houston's in from Implify by Bell and Health.

Talk a little bit of sports medicine.

Katie Compton's in from the Malva Center for the Arts.

Update us on that.

Got live music in the Daddy D live music series.

And also T.J.

Bolts in tomorrow morning.

Talking Rastlin'.

That's tomorrow morning with Mino and the Mayor six till nine on WGBW and WISS.

It's time for a church chat.

Well, we're great.

I make all the fun of me you want church lady and this is

church.

Yeah, we're going to look at the thing from Terry.

Make it stop for the love of God.

Make it stop.

We're going to have some Pope Leo chat pretty soon.

We're at Ashley.

Yes.

I'm

going to pronounce your last name.

You don't even have to, just don't even try.

Oh, hey, good job.

Pretty close.

Yeah, that's how I go with.

If you're doing the Polish version, it's klekiewicz.

Klekiewicz.

I like that

a lot.

Yeah, that's pretty cool.

But

Midwest Music Connection, love your energy, love your passion, love what you do for so many kids.

Because, you know, that's one of those fun kind of classes if you're good at it.

It's not so much fun if you're not good at it.

And I could see you being a really good teacher.

It's high energy.

It's high energy and you have to go in with zero expectations.

See

what's beautiful about Ashley is she makes every kid feel like they're good at that's what I

mean She wouldn't be

like a

nun.

Yeah a friend of mine who is a priest great piano player He was a kid and then it nun said to him his hands because

Your hands are too big.

You'll never be a piano

player.

Like, shut him down right away, and he is a

really good piano player.

But, you know, I mean, come

on.

As a kid, that does damage to a person.

Yeah,

you'll never be a good piano

player.

Right.

Trust

me, you're preaching

to the choir

here.

Well, Ashley, one more time.

What else do you guys have going on with the Midwest music connection?

Sure.

So we are our big event right now is our one day choir.

That's the Saturday.

Right.

Okay.

We also have a karaoke night coming up in July at Annapy Brewery.

Oh, okay.

Yeah.

We just we rented a room.

We're going to come do karaoke.

Very informal just for the fun of it.

So what

is your you're kind of like I always hear this term.

I don't really know what they are, but what is your mission statement?

to speak with Midwest Music, Ganesh, because you got day jobs, too.

Oh, yes, we do.

We do.

So it's to bring people together for the joy of singing and the joy of making music.

Right.

The mission statement is why we exist.

The vision statement is where we're going.

And you talked a little bit about where you're

going.

You want to

get this thing rolled out

to the rest of the state.

That would be so cool.

That's very cool.

Because every city you go to is going to have a different.

Every time we do this thing, it looks different.

It's never the same twice.

Tell me about that.

I just

want to say one thing about passion with people like that.

Jim's daughter is a big time doctor in New York City.

Okay.

I asked

her what

day she was here.

If you had your choice, would you still be a big time doctor in New York City?

Or would you be performing at the Weidner and sing?

She goes, are you kidding

me in

a

heartbeat?

She wants to perform.

Yeah.

There's a theater like you.

It's into their blood.

She reminds me a little bit

of you.

She's just

high energy, 30 years old, which I got.

I'll be 40, so.

OK, well,

just

West Side

Story.

Sure.

But all this growing up in theater,

music,

violin.

And when your kid sits down, Dad, I don't know if I want to.

going to, you know, music theater or medicine.

As a dad, it's like, let's

try the medicine.

That's a rough one.

Yep.

And a lot of times you, the culture is so, if you're not tip of the top good, you can't make it on just that.

She did go to

Interlochen, which kind of is like, that's where the best of the,

and Michigan,

right?

Yeah.

And they got kind of knocked down a little bit.

It's like, you're not, you're the lead in your high school.

We go there

and you're in the chorus, you

know?

What I want to say is that the, and I don't know what she's going to end up doing, but like you, you are passionate and you're going to stay probably in your career.

And

I

just hope she's really, really happy.

Oh, right.

Right.

And that's hard because you can have your job, but then you have to have something else to give you that joy because your job will suck the humanists right out of you.

Right.

She's

happy being.

Right.

I'm sure she's happy helping people.

My

point is that that theater can really, really, really get in your.

Right, right.

And for us, because we aren't professionals, right?

We don't do this as a paid job.

Our idea was create what you want to be in.

Like, so we're like, we want to sing.

We want to sing with other people.

Let's make this happen.

And we just, there it is.

I think that's awesome.

I think what you're doing is awesome.

And I get a feeling you guys are gonna get as big as you.

want to get.

Oh, thank you.

Because

what

you're doing is you're providing what they all say in business, provide a service they can't

get anywhere

else.

Right.

And that's what you're doing.

It's very unique.

Yeah.

So, and it takes both of our talents to make it work.

Right.

Because Jen is that outreach person that brings in the people.

I'm the behind the scenes.

I make the graphics.

I make the videos.

I do all the computer

stuff.

So, yeah, like, like, you're not a bad promoter.

Right.

Thank

you.

So, you're providing a need for where there's a want, but

for

us in the hood, we just say you're scratching.

in a niche.

Right.

It is great because people do want to sing.

People want to sing, people want to meet other people.

That are like.

That are like-minded, yep.

That's great.

I'm happy for

you.

I'm proud

of what you're doing.

Thank you.

We're so excited.

Tell

everybody where and when

one more kind of place.

Sure, sure.

So it's this Saturday and we're going to be at the compound in Green Bay.

That's off of Main Street.

Right by the art garage.

Right.

It's really connected to the art garage and there's coffee there too, Sifini coffee.

Nice little coffee shop.

It is.

It's

so cute there and they're so nice.

And so helpful it starts at 11 a.m.

And it goes to 2 p.m.

So it's three hours.

We're gonna perform our two songs And just have some some social time and it's just it's everybody's

they're gonna have the same passion.

They'd like make

music Yes, and Jen and I we get so jacked up on this we can't sleep for a couple weeks after just because we're so buzzin

I know.

I know.

So we're in

it.

Well, look into some doggy donors.

We are going to get you back here because you are fun.

You're

interesting.

And I think Dennis Peters from the Glam Band is going to.

He's

very passionate about you.

That would be cool.

Those guys are fantastic.

And

he's as good a guy as he is a musician and a performer.

That's cool.

Yeah.

The local music scene here is just phenomenal.

Like you don't have to go anywhere.

It's all there's a lot right here.

And you're right about that.

And the more we get.

people on here, the more it's like, wow, you're from here?

You know

what I mean?

They're that good.

Right, right.

And it's, and we've had people on from the mile of music and just all these other things that are going on.

And Oshkosh does a great job with music.

So yeah, thanks for doing this.

I mean, this is, and you're, you're, you talk about the youth, you know, I think sometimes we're, but you teach, sometimes

I think we're,

we're overshadowed a little bit with.

emphasis on sports, whereas you're bringing in the arts to

that.

And I

think to do both, I think is really

healthy.

I didn't

mention

something.

Oh, go ahead.

I was actor of the year at Masabi State Junior College.

Nine kids in his class.

I played George of Mysa Men.

George of the Jungle.

And I was in Huck Finn.

That's a big deal.

I played

Jim.

Yes.

That's awesome.

That's rain.

It's unbelievable.

Ashley K, you are awesome.

Midwest Music Connection.

We'll promote this again tomorrow.

You're coming

back.

Absolutely.

You're

coming back.

Thank you so much.

We'll bring her next time.

It'll be a party.

Oh, boy.

Thanks for having me.

Jim and

Elle, take that day off.

Perfect.

I love it.

Thank you so much.

Thank you.

Might of the

Mary, back in tomorrow morning.

See ya.

Kathryn Lake

You're listening to Civic Media.

You can tune into any of our live shows on any radio station across the state with the Civic Media app.

Find us in your phone's app store and listen anytime, anywhere.

Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

And here are your hosts.

John Minow and Jim Schmidt.

Good morning.

John Maino

Happy beautiful Thursday to

you.

62.

John Maino

And windy.

And what?

Last night, band concert.

Everybody's wearing jackets, hats.

It's like, what is this, March?

John Maino

And then New York.

But the concert was great.

John Maino

104 in New York

yesterday.

I

John Maino

know.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Talk to my kids, yeah.

John Maino

And then they're supposed to be, well, we're going to have Brittany on Monday, right, Todd?

Yeah.

John Maino

Have you seen that?

Potential thing it's coming up from like no annoy that would go right through central, Wisconsin

No, that's next week.

John Maino

Yeah,

that's good.

John Maino

No like tornadoes

and I have a heavy thunderstorms.

We're into the low 80s.

I will say this

John Maino

again.

We we're not Oh, we're

in a

John Maino

bubble.

I love it this year, but that part of the state just seems to be getting pummeled

Right.

We gotta do the we gotta start marketing the Wisconsin bubble.

John Maino

I know that's what it is at the Lake Michigan bubble, right?

I think there's something to it.

I mean get it put up like

hey, you know, I will just go daddy and let's buy it right now

John Maino

Did you see oh my god with tragic accident did you see the owner of DoorDash and his parents?

Both capped up capsized in Lake Tahoe.

Yeah started up DoorDash the whole thing and

you know sometimes people on

John Maino

there Yeah, I mean sometimes you just think when you a multi-millionaire you have no problems

Your boat's going to be phenomenal.

You're going to have a captain.

That's right.

And it's just like, wow.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Happy Trucker Thursday to you.

Thank you, Vicky.

Vicky's always

nice.

He's always on the truckers.

John Maino

Yeah.

Thewisconsonbubble.com is still available.

Todd, you jump on this.

No,

John Maino

I'm

looking at it.

Those.com, that's going to be if you buy it, it's going to be like.

$7 for this year and then like 20 bucks for the next two years it that's so inexpensive to buy that stuff like You're like that pulp to Green Bay.

I mean how long have I owned that and the just that's still there Yeah, and then because he's coming I really he's I talked to a really pretty good friend of mine

The pope is gonna come to Green Bay.

No, okay.

Just so we try to get the pope here

John Maino

In

your lifetime, let me rephrase that Todd in

Kathryn Lake

your

lifetime I was uh He's the pope for life.

He's got connections with the norbertine order.

Okay.

He does right with brownie.

Kathryn Lake

I don't know.

No, he really does.

Okay.

I

was a Chicago guy the shrine.

We are the only

in the United States, right here in champion.

We tried to get the last pope to come here, did a pretty big campaign, didn't happen, but this guy, because of his connections, if he's going to see his brother, it's like, come on.

I

John Maino

agree, I

mean, with that part.

It's not like just come here, but, and then, you know, I mean, the Packers are...

If you, not that they're a religion, some people they are, but if they were a religion, what would you label them as?

The Packard.

Would you say they were Catholic, like in terms of Lombardi and, you know, they do the Catholic Church?

Oh, okay, okay, okay.

So you got Mass.

I got it, okay.

Yeah, St.

Norbert, the whole thing, would stay there.

Okay, got

John Maino

it, got it,

okay.

So you have Mass at Lambeau Field.

Okay.

You know, take them out there, have some event.

I think a day here, that would put that...

Drafting we just did that would be

John Maino

big.

That would be big.

It would be very very big talk about getting some revenue outside and the best part he's got the t-shirt commission

I You know and it's not gonna happen this year, but I did talk to someone I want to tell you who he is, but he's pretty well connected.

He goes that will happen in your lifetime Wow, so and I

No, I don't know how much I'm on the clock.

I know that but I would say I don't know four five six seven

years

So should we start already working on our game plan to make money on it?

No, no, yeah, we can start making money.

No, no, you guys remember?

I got you per village truck.

Right.

There you go.

All that stuff we've been talking about, it's all going to come together.

It's all pasties with the pope.

I love it.

I love it.

That's kind of this is going to work.

All right.

But that will bring people in and we can that's

Well, it's going to be, you know, a one and a half day event or something like that.

We're going to stretch that thing out.

I mean, we're going to sell the city.

We've never sold it before.

Anybody

John Maino

have any suggestions for us?

Please let

us know as well.

It's going to be great.

We're going to line the streets when he comes down.

And 57.

John Maino

So you.

OK, so you.

But I got, I mean, we're not doing this until we get the green light from the Bishop, because man, I got Chris Ryan and I got hauled in his office big time.

So and I.

I just thought it was

bad.

I

have

to be

a fly in the hole.

I know, right?

I know.

I agree.

Wow.

Chris Rand goes in and had a genuine flex.

Is your excellency?

Yeah, I know.

That was not my favorite meeting in 16 years.

So, okay,

John Maino

what other one, because I'll tell you what, I used to think that was a joke when people would do that, but John Calipari, I think it is the basketball coach, got the trademark for three Pete.

You know, when you win

three.

Oh, yeah.

And

John Maino

he got I think he's made he's given it all to charity or he says he has

of course.

I would too.

John Maino

Yeah me too But where does that begin at home?

Um, but yeah, that's legit sometimes with those phrases and that

Yeah, just read that text that came in the Saints.

Okay.

All right

John Maino

Nancy read Nancy's text

Better get the request in to close off the street now.

You're right Nancy.

That's gonna be although that's get County I gotta get that gonna get Troy on my side on this one He'll he he'll be on board

the other one was look Schmidt the most Catholic team in the NFL is the Saints.

I mean the Saints But true to

I just I don't know that could be remember we had Billy Graham here his kid Yep at Lake Park.

No, that was awesome.

Okay

I mean, that was... Okay, can I just say something?

I'll bring some pictures.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

John Maino

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no,

John Maino

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,

John Maino

no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no,

John Maino

no, no, no, no, no, no,

no, no, no, no, no, no,

John Maino

no, no, no, no,

He talked our language.

I did not like these.

He was in over our head.

That's what I liked about him.

I consulted how many presidents.

John Maino

I know, but when you're a little kid, that's

true.

You're

John Maino

like

a gun smoke Batman.

But you're right.

But when he had that rally come here and you know, those those they know what they're doing.

But it was at Light Park and I'm going to show you a picture of that.

because get it to break.

It was, it was good.

But I think if we do this, cause they had, you remember the Pope came to Philly, big, big deal there.

So of course he'd been to St.

Louis and a couple other played Denver and they filled up the stadiums.

So we'll do that here.

So that'd be a, that's going to be fun.

I mean, we're going to head the committee, but first, but no, but first I'm not, I'm not getting in, I'm not getting in front of this one again.

So in,

John Maino

I think I got uncle denuncio.

Okay.

John Maino

I can show you that family tree thing.

His name is annuncio.

Denuncio.

Okay.

I didn't say that.

It starts in E. Anyway, let me finish this.

So the, the protocol is, and this is why I got.

No, no, wait, wait,

John Maino

wait, wait, wait.

It's my uncle, my uncle Nacho.

Ignacio.

Ignacio.

John Maino

Ignacio.

Really?

Yes.

Well, the annuncio is a title, okay?

But Ignacio means something too.

In religion-wise.

Okay, let me finish.

So the protocol, right?

There's a bishop, cardinal, you know, there's a... I mean, obviously, the Catholic Church is kind of top-down, right?

A little bit.

Just a little bit.

I mean, it's not like we vote on who our priest is going to be, right?

I mean, the congregation, you get a sign, everything's a sign from top down.

Anyway, so this is my understanding.

And I looked, there's a jazillion people out there, smarter than I am about this, but it's my understanding.

So the bishop's appointed by the pope, right?

He called the bishop, he was in Wyoming, he goes, hey, you're going to Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Oh, okay, great.

Yeah, thank you.

So you start with him and I like to do this he contacts the annuncio who is a Title it's a guy in DC who kind of takes care of the oh somebody's helping me with

John Maino

what me Ignacio

oh

John Maino

Spanish name means fiery or ardent.

It's my understanding that this guy takes care of the United States Popes like he'd be his chief of staff for the United States the annuncio So it's got to go to him and then he's the one who goes into contacts the Pope not Jim Schmitt

John Maino

Let me tell you something.

The Pope will give you five minutes.

I would take it.

There's a newspaper on

this desk.

Under the business sanctions.

John Maino

When you leave, he's going to pick up the newspaper to read it.

If there's an envelope underneath, you get your wish.

If not.

Yeah.

I think in Green Bay, we could get a pretty big envelope.

I just think people, I just, just the notoriety, you still go to those places and.

You walk into some of these cathedrals and there's a huge plaque that Pope John Paul was here in whatever, you know, it's, it's bigger than the president.

I think.

Well, I mean,

John Maino

people.

Well, more, I mean, it's worldwide.

Right.

Yeah.

John Maino

So, I mean,

the coverage would

John Maino

get.

I agree.

I'm telling

you, I know.

I think we've been sitting here at this, you know,

John Maino

can we make a buck this time?

Yes.

This, this is going to be easy pick inside.

All right.

But again, pasties for the pope.

Pasties with the Pope.

Yeah, no with the Pope.

Yeah, we could we could play like the paddles Everybody buy a paddle will spin the wheel and whoever gets it actually gets to have lunch with

them

John Maino

But I you know and I'll just Steve here and he pierces I remember Billy Graham coming to Green Bay.

I think he's wrestled the crusher

We're star Billy

Graham.

Anyway, no, that was so I do, you know, we're getting a little bit older and we don't need big jobs, big money anymore.

We need projects to do things.

So thank God we don't.

But this could be fun.

I agree.

I'm with you.

And I would the connections that the few that I've made in my life, I would leverage those big time, you know, Packers government.

John Maino

I would.

I would come out of retirement to be his altar boy.

You know what?

Wouldn't that be fun to work that mass?

John Maino

I'll come out.

This from Barty was an altar boy.

Big time.

He was

John Maino

like, died.

Yeah.

Yeah.

This is so weird.

Cause I'm sitting here going, what are they talking about?

No

way.

Oh man.

To just, and just think of the

priests

that are just going to, you know, yes.

I don't wanna tell him a joke and that'd be it.

I don't

know.

Did you

John Maino

hear what

I'm all about?

Where the bears

John Maino

suck?

Leo, Leo.

Be

honest

John Maino

with me.

Be honest

with me.

John Maino

Yeah, but I don't know.

All

right, I'm all with you on this one.

Even if it would be like a...

John Maino

Cos this is, you know what?

You know why this could work?

Cos this is something you're passionate about.

Oh,

John Maino

yeah.

You know, like we always say when somebody comes in here and they're an artist or whatever, it's like, where's the passion?

Oh, yeah.

I'd be all in on this.

I would, I would, yeah, I would

do a lot for this.

Yeah.

And it would be, just think of, you know, this, people would remember this and this is a Super Bowl bigger than that.

John Maino

We're going to start putting together a committee of our people.

No, no, no.

First things first.

We have to get to a

John Maino

Pope.

Sharturi,

charcuterie, charcuterie board with that.

Green

John Maino

Bay cheese.

I just think they will have all those.

for your parties, you know, the pope party.

They'll have those cheese, you know, like sculptures of the

pope, you know.

Maybe Spencer can do a painting, but he can't use cleats.

What could Spencer use?

To paint it.

Oh,

yeah.

You know, the

thing that he blesses it with, he can use one of those.

Okay.

Yeah.

I'm in.

I'm in.

Spencer could make some cats.

He could make

John Maino

it.

Spencer could

do some great stuff.

Even when you go to Rome in the pubs, there's all these tables around and

So let's

John Maino

be honest to

merch is big with the pole man.

Are you kidding me?

And then you want it blessed by the Pope?

So everybody thinks this is blessed by the Pope I have a rosary blessed by the Pope, but you know what you go I had one but you got it for me, but you go okay, but okay What do you say was blessed by the Pope?

I believe it, but how did he get blessed all the Pope does is you go there and there's like

What?

50,000 people?

You hold

Kathryn Lake

up your

rosary?

Exactly.

Any pluses, then.

But it's blessed by the pole.

So anyway,

John Maino

that's gonna be fun.

Is this

Marty

John Maino

Stewart?

Yes.

Terry requested Marty Stewart.

A whole lot of highway on Trucker Thursday.

Back at

this.

Happy Thursday, everybody.

62 degrees in Green Bay, 61 in Alpton, 64 in Oshkosh, mostly cloudy, scattered thunderstorms.

I have 70 today.

Just let's get through June, maybe July will be nicer.

Today is canoe day.

I haven't gone canoeing in a long time, have you?

Yeah, it's really, no one's canoeing.

Kayaks have taken over.

Kayaks have

John Maino

taken over.

Do that next week.

Today is handshake day, all right?

You know what?

That kind of, you know, it's so funny.

The fist bump through COVID type fist bump kind of took over.

I mean, you'd be surprised sometimes even like, I mean, these, how do I call them?

Not high society people, but more when you go to a banquet type things, you get some, they'll fist bump is a lot more common.

Oh, I handshake.

Oh yeah.

Absolutely.

These guys over yesterday just did deliver.

I got some, I don't.

Here's what I got.

But, you know, they came to the door and I just, yeah, it's knowing shakes hands anymore.

Yeah, I think that, you know, it's more sanitary and it's respectful.

I was hoping when COVID came around, we weren't going to get into that bowing.

I did not like that.

Remember they talked about, I

John Maino

remember

when I was going to be our way of

John Maino

saying hello.

I'm like, there

was a

John Maino

real bad flu thing, probably 10 years ago or something.

It was really infectious.

And I remember I went to a couple of things and people did like the elbow

thing.

John Maino

It's like,

no, that's too much.

Fist bumps are great.

Fist bumps are perfect.

And it's quick.

And it's not, handshakes can be awkward if you don't get the hand in the right socket.

Oh,

John Maino

I know.

You know what I mean?

I do.

And then sometimes hands, sometimes you shake someone's hand and I probably got a little firmer handshake.

And some people look at you like, are you like hurting?

John Maino

Or sometimes they're doing it just to show how strong they are.

Right.

But fist bumps

are a little awkward with women.

I

John Maino

know

no, you know, you know, I do a

John Maino

fist month a woman.

They

John Maino

always get a kickers.

I always blow it up.

Oh, you know fireworks.

That's so weird.

No, it's not

John Maino

they like that 10 11

Right, right gonna be 11.

Wow.

My

John Maino

granddaughter's taught me that

one.

John Maino

Yeah, I'm

sure they

John Maino

did and how old are they?

Whatever a chocolate pudding day can't screw up chocolate pudding.

That was always fun in the cafeteria bomb pop

day.

I don't know what

that is.

John Maino

Yeah, you do.

They're

popsicles popsicles.

Oh, okay.

They were they wanted to carve out their own day.

All right.

John Maino

Coconut day.

I could live on coconut.

And you don't like no, I could live on it.

I mean, I'll scrape it off.

I could live on coconut.

I say coconut oil is like the, you know, the beat all end all of health.

Look at me.

Different, right?

I mean, your scar, they put that on your scars, your skin.

John Maino

You know, I was gonna try to find some vitamin E or C for it.

I can't find it.

I Went to Walgreens.

I went to CVS.

Where do you buy that?

Do you have to get that over?

Cuz I did get my new bee pollen Tarot.

Tarot or

Talon?

Talon.

Talon.

Talon.

Talos.

That's what it is.

We're so stupid.

Yeah, we

are.

Talo.

Talo.

Okay.

So

I've got... Can you measure people driving to work like, Jesus?

Because I went through a full

John Maino

container already.

No, what you need to do... I

John Maino

look so much younger when I see myself.

Yeah.

Those leaves that you break and those, that's what you should put on there.

John Maino

Aloe?

Yeah.

I don't know where you

John Maino

find those either.

Yeah.

I think you just grow it at home.

I think

John Maino

oh, yeah, yeah, yeah from the yeah in Arizona.

These to have you just

snap off the way even sunburn Yeah, but not more than that.

It's like it's more than sunburn.

It's

John Maino

yeah, you know, but that's what we'd use it for I mean people already have those grown in their yards

and I think you

John Maino

could break off a piece

and that's so natural I don't know why you want to get all that chemical stuff from the vitamin

John Maino

E or C is chemical I don't know and be pollen certainly isn't

I

John Maino

don't you see that story ABC News last night killer bees

are making such an unbelievable comeback and they're coming north.

They said it'd be really bad in like Kentucky, Ohio, place like that, and they might just keep coming.

There's some kind of a weird atmospheric type of thing going on with the planet or something, and they're just swarming.

You should see these things.

This goes right into our previous conversation with Talotel with the planet or something.

It is.

Looks like you get a little bit more specific.

Okay, so what?

The bees are coming because of the planet.

Yeah.

Wow.

It's unbelievable.

I guess you should see these swarms.

Okay.

What do we kill you?

Okay.

So this was on national news.

John Maino

Nate David Murr.

Okay.

What do you just do to scare us or was there

John Maino

there was a was there a scientific reporter?

It's unbelievable.

Where do you see these things?

Okay, you're saying now about 72 people die a year from bees.

And in Mississippi, they've had several already from these killer bees that

John Maino

No disrespect Todd, but even I was watching news last night and said the heat index in Jackson, Mississippi was like 108 I thought I can't think of any place I'd rather be less than Jackson,

Mississippi I know

John Maino

Wow and just humid Vicki says I'd love to fist bump and blow it up with mine.

Oh,

okay.

Thank you.

Thank you Vicki next time we see

John Maino

you Yeah, but you know how can you not like coconut cream pie on my deathbed?

I want a piece of coconut cream pie,

you know mine.

John Maino

All right

Ariana Grande is 32 Michael Vick 45 Derek Jeter 51 Gretchen Wilson 52 Todd you remember when she was gonna be the next biggest thing.

Yeah, and she just

kind of faded away.

Yeah.

John Maino

Well, yeah Crystal Donald 55.

Okay, Crystal Donald.

Mm-hmm The office.

No, no Parks and Rec.

Nope Young guy

Has done like, uh, superhero?

Is he like that kid

John Maino

in, um, in, uh, Stand By Me?

Uh, no.

No.

Oh, right.

That's what Chris O'Donnell looks like.

Don't know him.

Yeah.

John Maino

Nick Offerman and... Oh,

he's

John Maino

funny.

Funny.

You know, you've got to start eating better.

What was his name again?

Oh, can't think of it, but you have to start eating better because you're cholesterol.

Hmm.

What is cholesterol?

He says, tonight, I'm going home.

I'm having a couple glasses of straight whiskey, and I'm going to use power tools and build a nice dinette set

tonight.

I know who he is.

John Maino

Yeah.

Ron, Ron Swanson.

Yes,

Ron.

That guy is

John Maino

calling again.

How did you handle it?

I put him on hold for 42 minutes.

Good job.

Good

job.

Quick break.

I

don't see a cop inside Six days on the road in a mug on a wagon

Got something to say?

John Maino

Hey, thank you very much.

Once again, happy Trucker Thursday to you.

Not real nice outside.

62 in Green Bay, windy, Alpine 61, Oshkosh 64.

You want to know a job I could not have?

Yeah, well a lot of them, but

John Maino

what I mean nobody mean that I couldn't I would not they'd say hey We're gonna pay you 500 grand a year, but here's what you gotta do name one

What is that

John Maino

the guy in the crane out here?

Oh?

John Maino

Huh, right?

How does he even get up there?

Is there an elevator?

I couldn't see like an elevator, but there must be Can

you imagine we get everybody has a bad day right something happens?

Yeah, you drop a jar of

Jalapeno jalapenos and step on them, right?

Clean it up, right?

Can you imagine having a bad day at that job?

No, no

Yeah, yeah, it's nice to see that coming out of the ground though.

Yeah, I mean, they're really making progress that guy though who That company

John Maino

is just we're talking about the apartment complex

right next

John Maino

to the Where the packer stuff used to be

and next to where that building that should have been torn down into a park

is been renovated to low income housing.

So that's the building is great.

The building is great.

So.

But

John Maino

my God, I'd love to talk to that guy sometime.

Just get him on.

We

should wander down there one morning and see if we can get him on.

Yeah.

Oh, I think they would be

happy to do that.

You have some connections, Jim?

I do.

Let's

get

John Maino

that lined

up.

I do.

You got to get

John Maino

the Pope here.

You got to get

this guy.

No, I do have a connection with this guy because he is really good friends with a quick trip.

Oh, OK.

Yeah, the golf career.

Great.

All

Kathryn Lake

right, that's great.

Because I drinks with them at the Northland.

OK.

So, yes.

Well, that would be the owner.

So I don't know about the construction work.

We probably have to go through the owner and say, look, can we get 15 minutes of this guy's time to come down to the studio and talk to us?

Yeah,

John Maino

all right.

That would be cool.

You want the crane guy?

Yeah.

Yeah, that'd be fun.

The guy that sits up in

John Maino

that little thing.

Yeah.

I mean, can you imagine that on a windy day?

Like, even today, that thing would

probably be walking.

Remember that thing in Milwaukee?

Absolutely.

What was it?

Big blue or whatever it was and that thing?

John Maino

Yeah.

Wow.

John Maino

I'll

give them all

John Maino

the credit in the world for that job.

I'll work on that.

So Pope Crane?

All right.

Yeah.

It's only 637.

I know.

John Maino

Michael says, I feel bad for Conn Knippel, drafted by one of the worst professionally managed sports franchises.

It is.

It's actually been, I think, named that.

They just can't get it going.

They put a lot of stock into, is it LeVar?

No.

Whatever one of the ball brothers is.

the youngest one or middle one whatever and he's been hurt all the time and they get these high hopes and they just can't win and they're not drawing a lot but with that being said he will get instant playing time he will be a starter i bet or six man from day one

well that's cool yeah um what okay so the two owns the team is it the owner what's the problem with that team oh

That's not always the best thing.

John Maino

Yeah,

so they have good

John Maino

morning fellas Vinnie Tori says go to the black market get yourself some breast milk to cure your skin Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna be doing that Tori, but thank you Going on actually talk to Todd Todd.

Here's what you gotta

do.

You gotta go in the black

John Maino

market for me go in the dark

web

Then I get a call from HR.

Hey, Todd, we were checking your web, uh, browsing.

Yeah.

What's the start web breast milk?

Yeah.

I'm doing it for Mino.

Oh, okay.

Makes total sense.

Yeah.

Got

John Maino

it.

Yeah.

No problem.

All right.

Keep them

John Maino

happy.

Yes.

But that was an amazing day for sports yesterday.

And I watched the NFL, excuse me, the NBA draft.

And, um, it's really cool.

Cause they, it's really a family thing there.

I mean, they have.

John Maino

Well, you've been I've never been to Puerto Rico.

I heard it's rough, huh?

I'm gonna play in Puerto Rico.

John Maino

I thought you were

no you went to Haiti, right?

Oh,

John Maino

hey, that's right.

That's

right.

That's right

Yeah, I know

That's poverty corrupt government.

Yeah, it's just it Getting that thing turned around ain't gonna happen.

You don't hear much about that anymore.

Yeah.

No, there's other stuff going on.

Oh, all right Okay, how much is this kid gonna make?

John Maino

I don't know you can you can look it up because it's you don't even like negotiate anymore It's locked in like whatever position you're drafted in that's so much that is slotted for if you're rookie contract for a year

Um, I think it's three year kind of

tracks, but it's over a million dollars, isn't it?

John Maino

Oh, yeah, but you could you could look it up.

Okay.

What is the fourth player in the NBA draft make?

It's just really

there that yeah, that's kind of cool really because it I don't know and they have to play they can't like hold out around the

John Maino

can and go to

France or someplace

John Maino

and play but

huh.

Yeah.

All right.

Well, congrats to him, right?

I mean his parents got to be

John Maino

what's kind but think about this too.

So two people from the state of Wisconsin

in the same family drafted in the NBA.

I mean, Jeff Nordgaard, his uncle, and him.

That's pretty amazing.

That's pretty cool.

Yup.

That's four year deal worth 45 mil.

Okay.

Is it more than a million dollars?

Wow.

Yeah.

That is serious, serious money.

Isn't that incredible?

That's incredible.

And he's what, he's all of what?

21, 22?

19.

Oh,

John Maino

he's that young?

Well, he played in the state high school championship game last not this past March obviously a year ago March Wow, okay, so 19 Then he's got three or four brothers that are all coming up right about his size right

19 is right 19 turns 20 in August isn't that something 45 million 19 he'll do all right

John Maino

and it's that played for me in Nagani

And we're sitting on the air talking about trying to get the Pope in town and getting the crane

John Maino

operator

on the radio station.

John Maino

Although

this kid, are they Catholics?

No, they're very religious.

Well, we can convert them by that.

That's all right,

because everybody, even though Christians, like they like the Pope.

You

know

what I mean?

Like, he's

kind of... And now, welcome to

Are They Catholic?

I'm just looking for some money.

That is such a my

John Maino

mom thing.

That is such a

my mom thing.

If you're going out with any of my mothers or

John Maino

sisters,

not me so much at that point,

John Maino

but

the first... Is mine too?

She's got a little podium, right?

And then instead of like light bulbs, it's all candelabras.

There you go.

Like, okay.

John Maino

I love it.

Love it.

Yes.

Oh, God, that's funny.

But your mom too,

then.

Oh, man.

I

John Maino

remember my

mom.

Or they're not, or she'll tell you they're not Catholics.

Okay, move

John Maino

on.

Joey.

Joey.

Joey.

Emma.

That's

funny sometimes if they knew already it was game over.

She's not Catholic

Nancy just text us in and if you get an answer wrong somebody slaps your knuckles with a ruler

Catholics are coming out I was gonna talk to him about funding the promotional for that

Part of it's $45 million because you're supposed to tithe 10%.

That'd be 4.5 million.

Don't need all that, but that would be...

John Maino

Catholics don't do

that.

No, they're supposed to.

They really don't.

John Maino

No, no, that you're thinking of.

You're thinking of the

John Maino

Mormons.

No, no, John.

Okay, you're right.

We got away from that, but you should tithe 10%.

Really?

Okay.

Yeah.

Boy, am I in trouble.

That's

John Maino

funny, actually.

I'll do the I remember one

time my sister was

John Maino

dating a guy who was a religion my family did not get along with and That was not good.

He was different religion.

Yeah, I bet you did was your dad around then.

Mm-hmm Yeah, their dad's didn't like

John Maino

that didn't like that.

No, my dad

Yeah, he was

John Maino

there were it's rigid religion used to be so much more it was more than anything cut throat almost yeah, what religion you were

was really important

John Maino

back

then

Yeah, but they didn't, they only, yeah, it's not like that anymore, but yes, it was.

I remember once I had my brother who

John Maino

was this really great athlete, okay?

He had a scholarship to Western Michigan for baseball and then he got hurt and whatever, whatever.

But the football coach really wanted him to go to the public school, okay?

All the coaches said they really wanted, he was a phenom almost, okay?

And my mom said, no.

God will get you for that or something.

If you leave the Catholic school.

That's how serious it was.

That something would happen if

you

John Maino

left the Catholic

school

John Maino

and went to the public school.

And

John Maino

they believed it.

I mean, they weren't just whatever.

Yeah.

I'm glad that come around a little bit on that.

Well, I think so.

Yeah.

All right.

Will, I want to get, I want that kid's number because I think even though he's Lutheran, we can, he can throw in a little one.

John Maino

This is just Michael here in my family since I grew up Jewish.

I

John Maino

was guilty today One

of our contacts back this you know, we'll wrap up this pope thing but Mayor Nutter who was the mayor of Philadelphia when the pope came was Involved in that so we'll get him on the phone on this show to say look What did what was the involvement?

How'd you do how much money do you have to raise and he'll help us with that now?

Pop John, but

You lead the way I will but I will be another contact.

I'm thinking of the contacts to get this guy here, but I'm not doing anything I'm putting money on this

a year from now.

We still won't have money

John Maino

Okay,

I

will we will okay.

I don't you guys make all you wait

How's it look from that angle Johnny up

John Maino

there?

Alright, I'm gonna be the altibar, remember?

I'll dig up my

John Maino

scapular.

Man, that could be fun.

I love projects.

I got energy right now.

I love projects.

Sometimes they'll say that to Don.

John Maino

watching you try to do.

So it's entertainment for the entire family.

I don't know that there's a morning show out there anywhere that has as many laps as we do in the first hour.

John Maino

Look at this laugh at

ourselves.

That's

John Maino

right.

We got a great lineup.

Tell us about this lineup you

John Maino

got coming

up today.

I tell you this

John Maino

seven o'clock

hour.

Go ahead.

Go ahead.

No seven o'clock hour is going to be great.

We are so.

Anyway, he's coming in to talk about firework safety, which is really weird.

He's going to talk about how you can buy them.

but you can't shoot them off.

I mean, our state laws are kind of a

John Maino

little...

And depending on

John Maino

sometimes what, like if

you're

John Maino

in Bellevue versus Ledgvue versus whatever.

We, I am, well, yeah, in a different municipality because they're better.

You know, and they, I don't know, but of course we would never shoot them off.

We just look at them.

They're on the shelf.

And look at these lovely... Yeah,

look at this, but I don't know, fireworks are awesome, but he's going to talk about that and...

Then there's permits if you're gonna, some people like shows.

And you can get a permit.

Some of these people are on the... I

John Maino

almost accidentally caused a guy to die because of fireworks.

Yeah, I believe that.

He was this old guy, really old.

Yeah.

No one even says his name.

Old Italian guy.

He used to go apple picking all the time up in the woods where I lived.

And I was throwing cherry bombs into the mine pit.

To

the

John Maino

echo?

Just for the whole thing.

And he thought somebody was shooting at him.

Oh, no.

Kathryn Lake

He couldn't

John Maino

see me.

And he went home and called the police.

And the police came to my house.

Oh.

That did not go over well.

I did

John Maino

not.

So we got Michael Nott's Green Bay Fire Shift.

We got

Neil B. Mose.

She's going to be great.

John Maino

Amazing.

Amazing artist.

Mike Steepak, Fox Sports.

Ashley from downtown Green Bay, who's last name I cannot pronounce.

But we'll be back after this.

You're

Kathryn Lake

listening to Civic Media.

John Maino

on Trucker Thursday.

Talk about something that's really important right now.

Then, of course, is fireworks, fireworks safety, all those kinds of things.

Got Matthew Knots and Nick Craig from the Green Bay Fire Department in here.

She's

good to have you.

Yeah, great to be here.

Thank you very much.

My

John Maino

Nagani minor friend.

Good to have you.

Great to be here.

Where do you

John Maino

like your kudugis from the best up

there?

Tino's.

Yeah, thank you.

Home to

John Maino

pizza.

All right.

Congress.

I told you chief we won't be in this conversation

for a while.

That's funny.

We'll have to check out good pizza so yeah

absolutely.

So I know chief you've been here what little over two years yeah

a little over two years about two and a half.

You're doing a great job.

I want to

before we get into fire safety and

You know, Johnson, this is the time, but it's always time for fire safety.

There's kitchen fires that happen all year, but we've got fireworks coming up, lithium batteries.

And

John Maino

as we're talking, those batteries

have become an issue.

But for first, I want to start with the story that I want to just thank you.

I will say that if there's an umbrella of fire, even when I was working with you guys, your customer service is second to none.

The comments we get was, they are the nicest guys.

My trainer believe it or not.

I go to an athletic trainer and you can't tell but it's it's it don't say her name poor thing Was stuck in an elevator.

All right Saturday And at that cheap elevator that city never put any money and it's legit that you should see the picture And these guys came in I said were there in eight minutes he goes less than eight like four minutes and they

Um, they got in the elevator and it got stuck between two floors.

They were in there for over an hour.

John Maino

Wow.

And they're just, their clothes were just drenched because of hot air and hell on Saturday.

Missed the show at the Meyer Theater.

It was date night.

They have a 10 month old kid.

First time they got

out.

Oh, no.

Yeah, no.

It's not quite the

experience.

It was.

I said, um, I said, hey, you're gonna file a complaint.

It was not, I'm not that kind of guy.

I said,

I am 25% but you just I just want to pass that on to you.

I told him yesterday that I was going to pass that show and but because those guys were so nice and calm because his wife got a little anxious.

So anyway and I he called the maintenance guy the elevator and of course he didn't know what the hell he was doing and anyway it was an hour.

And his shirt, he said, let me show you some pictures.

And he just drenched because it was hot.

It was really hot, right?

John Maino

I would have been like die hard and take out the towel and crawl through the duct.

Yeah.

Anything to

get

out of

there.

Yeah.

Yeah,

it's a. But I just want to say, Chief, but when he told me that, I'm like that the customers sitting with those guys were so calm and so friendly and so nice.

And I just, that didn't surprise me at all.

I'm just telling you that.

And I think everybody knows that.

I just want to

thank you.

Yeah.

It's something really pride ourselves and our people are just.

Awesome.

Yeah, just great and do such great work every day and and yeah, it's always nice to hear that though.

Yeah, make sure you pass it on

John Maino

I want to buy the

Old firehouse down here.

Okay.

Yeah.

It's for sale.

Sure.

It's like a buck, right?

Yeah, we're looking for some really exciting things going in there.

So, yeah, we're really excited about that.

That's such a cool building right in that spot, historic spot.

It is.

It is.

That's cool.

Great potential.

It does.

Coffee shop, bike rentals, there's a lot of cool

stuff.

Yeah, we really want to see like that really public facing, you know, and, you know, restaurants or something.

I mean, something really cool there.

Really pay homage shouldn't pay honor.

Just the first thing you see when you come in from,

John Maino

you

know, Alabama.

Absolutely.

And I think the...

Look love Broadway and everything that's going on, but the income is a little bit higher over there I just think if you get the support from the Aster neighborhood and I just think people will will support that I

Kathryn Lake

think

people are looking forward to that that has been talked about for many many many years and Even after we close that thing down, which one knows a while ago It's the potential there's great.

So I

hope it doesn't become an office.

I hope it becomes

Yeah, that was really something we want to see is that really public-facing

building there, you know, it's such a great location.

It's such a really, you know, pay honor to the fire department is really a big thing.

Well, and we like museums, right?

I mean,

and John's, I like the autumn museum.

I think that's

awesome.

Johnny's really wants to lean into like a veterans museum

somewhere

and he's looking at a couple properties.

I want to do a music hall of fame

museum because I love music.

This big history of music in town.

There is.

It's amazing.

And when you really look into it,

it's even stronger than I think people think.

I mean, we've written some great music here.

And then he, and I think to honor the fire department, you could do a museum there too.

I know you talked about that at one time.

Sam talked about

that,

but I don't know.

I just think it's cool to celebrate history.

Yeah.

And we're certainly looking at, um, like our new fire station, which is also the part of the master plan on, on Broadway is have space there for a museum to really have some of this memorabilia, but we have a great exhibit encourage everybody.

Okay.

We've got one

John Maino

of our good sponsors in Oshkosh.

He's an attorney.

All right.

And there you should see that office is in the fire station built.

God, do you know the year?

I don't.

They were using horses.

It was

John Maino

all horse-drawn

things.

And their

John Maino

whole offices in there.

And they found some old stuff that were just left.

It's like a museum

in

John Maino

itself, right in downtown Oshkosh.

It is so cool.

And he honors the fire department with the...

fix the stuff up.

That just displays it all really cool.

Yeah, that's important to us too.

And that building, we really want to see that.

Some fire department theme or something that really honors what the tradition is.

When

you think about the fire department, it's changed, but it really hasn't.

I mean, you put out fires and you got really nice people.

You don't slide down the pole anymore.

There's technology, but it's still

putting out fires.

It's

leaving your place and going to their place,

you know.

Those traditions still stay and, you know, we do, we do a lot of the same things, obviously.

Kathryn Lake

You

can stick around though, right?

Kathryn Lake

I mean, we

kind of had you in here just to kind of say hi and talk a little bit about Nogani.

I had to get that out of the

John Maino

way.

All right, we're gonna send her a quick break.

We come back.

Chief Matthew Knott's Nick Craig, Green Bay Fire Department.

We got a lot of things to talk about, including firework safety coming up right now on Trucker Thursday on Mine on the

Mirror.

For sure, for sure.

By golly, it's clean, clear to flag

down.

Come on.

See, that's a big 10-4 there, Big Ben.

Yeah, we definitely got the front door good, buddy.

Mercy sinks alive.

Looks like we've got us a convoy.

It was the dark of the moon on the 6th of June in a Kenworth pulling logs.

Cab over Pete with a reefer on and a Jimmy hauling hogs.

We is heading for Bear on I-10 about a mile out of Shaggy Town.

I says, pig pen, this here's a rubber duck and I'm about to put the hammer down.

And here are your

John Maino

hosts, John Minow and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back to our number two of Minow and the Mayor here on a blustery Thursday morning on Trucker Thursday.

Matthew Knott, Nick Craig, Green Bay Fire Chief, and what would your, what would your official title be?

I'm a captain.

Okay.

John Maino

We'll give you that.

I'm helping out in fire prevention right now.

Nice.

John Maino

We got a lot of that to talk about right now in firework safety

and

John Maino

everything, Jim.

It is.

And this is so important.

We're going to talk about it today.

because the fourth is coming up, but this is important every day.

I mean, we had a lot of kitchen fires and I don't know how many you respond to every month, every year, but I want to talk about fireworks because we all love them, right?

We kind of do some of us buy them and maybe even a different municipality.

What is the rule?

Can we shoot them off?

Can we buy them here in Green Bay at these stands for spend $100 and have the kids...

Well, what we really encourage is everybody to enjoy the professional shows, right?

We understand and Nick's going to talk about a little bit too about, you know, we really, we're concerned about the injury.

Right.

You know, fires and injury and, and really like these things are just best left for professionals.

Just go enjoy these professional shows.

You know, you, there are sales.

You can buy them.

There's some real restrictions of them.

And like I said, Nick can join

John Maino

in.

But just reading the rappers, they try to get more.

Lethal explosive

over here.

Oh, I know the names are always entertaining

There's a marketing job.

Yeah, but Nick,

what

do you suggest?

I agree with the chief that look we got fires and Fridays Fire over the Fox that's

sponsored,

which is a great

great show

and there's a lot of these smaller communities that I think do a really good job to rivers Kiwani some of these places up north and those are

Tomah, there's a great fireworks show.

However, there aren't these dads.

I don't know who they are, but they like to just show off.

Everybody

look at Jim.

All right, Nick, tell us what do you suggest?

So with consumer fireworks, excuse me, the latest info that we have is from 2022.

Average of 31,000 fires started across the US.

3,500 structure fires.

26,000 outside fires.

And the side note with that is wildfires started by fireworks are doubled on the 4th of July.

John Maino

Even some

of the California

John Maino

ones, they think were

fireworks.

An estimated six civilian deaths were caused by fireworks in 2022.

And every year in Green Bay, we see several incidents caused by fireworks improperly disposed of fireworks.

People don't soak them in a...

You know, right?

Because they stay hot for a long time.

They do, right?

Yep.

Fireworks that are landing on roofs of homes that has caused several fires across the last couple years.

And then the biggest thing is the amount of injuries we're looking at, over 10,000 injuries caused by consumer fireworks every year.

And the ones that are legal for consumers to buy are actually causing the majority of those injuries because they're the most accessible.

So really, even though they're legal, the guy buys them legal, they're legal to shoot off

It's still high prone to injury?

Yeah, just, for example, sparklers, they burn it over 1200 degrees.

That's super hot.

Obviously, the metal rod on the sparkler is red hot when it's done burning.

Sparklers account for 29% of fireworks injuries for children under the age of five treated in emergency rooms.

So the big thing is, if you're gonna let kids use sparklers and the safe and sane, so to speak, fireworks, which aren't really that safe or sane, you wanna have good adult supervision.

Sober adult supervision.

Have that bucket of water.

Yeah, that sober is a good, yeah, cause that's just true.

I didn't think of that, but that.

You know, I'm surprised somebody hasn't invented a sparkler with a handle.

Or maybe they have.

You know what I'm saying?

You're right.

You're holding your

wire.

You're holding the wire.

Okay.

And sparklers though, they're a blast.

Write your name.

I

mean, okay.

All right.

I'll make a note of that sober.

You know, if your child is going to use it, you know, make sure you give him a little guidance before you light it.

You know, hold it away from your face.

Don't put it by anyone else.

Keep it away from people.

That that supervision is really key to to help and keep things safe.

Okay.

John Maino

People don't know the force of a cherry bomb sometimes.

I mean, that's it's like a shotgun shell going off in your hand.

Isn't it though?

Yeah.

Okay.

John, do you want to finish the story or you told it?

Yeah.

John was throwing them.

Oh,

John Maino

yeah, I told him story.

This

is Nagani

John Maino

though.

Okay.

Okay.

So

John Maino

it's one of the mind pits

of the

John Maino

thing that's raised to play and handsome cherry bombs.

that I got from somebody, somebody, and I was only like eight or nine, which I should not have been doing.

But I was throwing up.

He was sober.

I

was throwing

John Maino

him in the pit because that was so cool.

It'd be like a geyser.

Well, this old Italian guy was out picking apples.

And he thought somebody was shooting at him.

Oh, my God.

He went

John Maino

to the police, filed a report.

Oh,

John Maino

no.

Yeah.

They showed up at my door

and went over well with my dad.

He just came home from the Matherby iron ore mine.

Yeah.

Oh, no.

So with all right.

the fireworks.

So is there a safe way to do it?

You get the bucket of water right to put it or is there?

I'm

not

saying I know you're not going to promote it because that's not your job.

But if someone's going to

do it, let's give them some safety tips.

You know, even the safe and sane ones, the spark fountains, the snakes, the sparklers, all those should be put into a bucket of water overnight away from a building.

That's the biggest thing is away from a structure.

When people dispose of them and put it in the garage, that's that's not the best place for keep it outside away from things.

John Maino

Hey, did you see that fire is on?

ABC News last night I can't think where the whole thing exploded like the firefight three firefighters were injured it was just a house and The people don't know what they said it wasn't that the gas natural gas company said no it wasn't us someone but it it's people don't like I knew one guy who was a reloader and You don't think you know what I mean people have some things in their

house and you

John Maino

never think there's gonna be a fire But man if there is and you guys have to go in you I mean that can

be lethal stuff

For the city of Green Bay, it's 25 feet away from

Oh, anything.

That's as far as I didn't realize that.

I'm glad you're using one of the portable Weber type above ground fire pits.

Those can be a little bit closer, 15 feet.

Bellevue and Allaway are 15 feet for anything.

OK.

John Maino

But that's the thing, because we lived in ledge view versus Green Bay.

It

John Maino

was different from one to the other

type thing.

Yeah.

There's some basic standards that are the same, you know, with the international fire code.

And like I said, it is.

There could be some confusion and we're trying to work with all those different ages.

So Nick,

those, the things that you buy that are above ground that had the seat, the seat through what mesh cover on 15 feet from your garage or your house.

Correct.

Or offense.

Well, that, that's doable.

You can sit around

with a chair and talk a little bit.

Yeah.

And those, you know, those numbers came about because of specific problems, right?

And it's not like just like most everything is, there's reasons why.

It's not just an arbitrary number.

John Maino

So how is the I remember after 9 11 of horrible horrible tragedy But boy it became cool to be a firefighter and you know EMT and everything like that And I know a lot of applications didn't weigh up is it still like that because I mean it's it's still a very prestigious job

Where we'd have thousands and thousands

of

applicants and but actually, you know, we have really high standards and we have a lot of people that meter exceed those standards.

All right.

The other thing that we have is we have a cadet program and that is basically like boy scouts or girl scouts to try out.

See if the fire department is something for you.

So a lot of those cadets that have gone through our cadet program in high school have actually been hired by us.

And we do every year get a pretty good mixture of female to male deaths in our program.

John Maino

I just want to say one thing though, too, like with the military, you know, I'm so old that it's like, oh, females are the weaker sex.

They could never do anything except be secretaries in the me.

And that was that was the thing that people really thought not even

now.

John Maino

You want to talk about some people that can kick your butt and do whatever.

Yeah.

And it's like, you know, there's, you know, and, you know, again, my daughter's in the military and, you know, doing fantastic.

And, you know, there is this is a job for absolutely everyone there.

you know, there is, you take a scenario of, you know, one of us in a structure fire, for example, and we have to rescue them.

I can't do it myself.

And that's the beauty of the fire service.

It's a team effort.

And we all work

together.

She doesn't have the resources.

And she doesn't really want to go to college, nor should she.

She's just not.

But

she wants to do something and

she

doesn't know what culinary.

John Maino

Give me your number one, I don't want to say criteria, but what do you guys look for?

Attitude.

Okay, there you go.

Yeah, it's, you know, we can do all the training for everything else, but it's the attitude.

And, you know, it's just nice to...

Like all the applicants we've had, we just did interviews, and that's what people say is they really like our culture, like what we're doing.

People are great.

All those things we talked about, and that really shows.

That's awesome.

And

it

doesn't.

I just really, again, I don't want to, but I really want to applaud you for that, because that is more important than I'm with you on that than anything.

The tactics you're teaching

oh, yeah, we can do that right all those skill sets We teach and they come to us really well prepared and then we do our own training to fine-tune it a little bit Yep,

you know I just want to say for parents and is that it's a prestigious job.

Oh, yeah,

I think it's a very respectable job

John Maino

It is

and I think that's great.

Yeah, but thanks for leading the department and you

John Maino

too, you know,

I mean you've

John Maino

been at that

I told you guys, I felt it for my brother twice up in the garden.

Yeah, but I got there later and the truck was on the way up the door.

The total loss.

I still put on the

whole unit and they came

John Maino

back to

get me.

I didn't go against the wall, it

John Maino

says you get run over.

You guys are awesome.

Thanks for coming, you guys.

Thank you.

John Maino

Nick Craig, Green Bay Fire Chief, Green Bay Fire Department.

Thank you so much for

everything you guys do.

Keep up the good work.

We appreciate it.

John Maino

Thank you.

Thanks for having us.

But

John Maino

the fourth of July is coming up and I just want to thank those guys for

those guys are busy

Appreciate

John Maino

it very much

and the chief and we've started to get him in before and he was Really looking forward to this and I think just a reminder look some of us are gonna shoot off fireworks But to have that bucket of water there

Doesn't cost a lot and to throw everything in there right away instead of you throw it into the garbage can and it smolders and starts a garage fire and so I And I'm not doing the sparklers.

I don't think

John Maino

when then we didn't have time to talk about the

lithium batteries We'll do that next

John Maino

time I like to get them back as soon as possible because that's a real serious thing that's happening

and then he's got some videos he was he's gonna send him to us Yeah, that our listeners could just go and talk about you know how to handle

Lithium batteries properly so that'll be good.

They have a lot of information.

They want to share with our

John Maino

yeah communities.

No, they're great man.

I if it wasn't for Heights, I would have been a firefighter

I'm sure that that's the only thing that would have kept you away.

I

John Maino

think

so too

John Maino

I wouldn't go for you saw that picture that Nick showed

us No,

John Maino

things are just and you're just up I don't have that chromosome.

No

John Maino

Wow.

Like I said, I'd be great for like grass fires.

But

why do we need that?

I mean, what's the tallest building?

Well, eight stories is 80 feet.

So it's Bellin.

That'd be the.

Yeah.

Bellin's the highest.

The high hospital.

Yeah.

I

John Maino

thought this one over here, the Bellin building,

raised a block

John Maino

away.

Oh, here.

John Maino

OK.

Well, that one's higher.

It thinks it's on the hill, sort of.

Yeah.

Well, I guess you want to shoot down 20 feet.

Yeah.

Well, I guess so.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That's high.

Anyway, that's high.

That's high.

Yeah.

I just, you know.

The hose is like 70 feet, but what am I doing up here?

No, I'm sure they got that all squared away.

John Maino

Well, it's pretty cool though with some of the new things they've got.

No, I know there's it.

We didn't even get to the

John Maino

that was to Todd Todd next time schedule them for like an hour.

Yeah.

No.

Well, you

could

have kept him around for this.

So they had

John Maino

to

go.

John Maino

They had to

go to go.

I scheduled them and they said 722 when I saw that they have something at 730.

All right.

We'll

get them on soon.

We'll get them.

And they said they'd like to come back.

Well, I want to talk to those guys.

about a little bit more was the uh the water you know they they have their own boat oh do they yeah they do i

John Maino

don't think i've ever

seen it yeah it's not there with the big water cannons yeah they've got to fight wow so they've got to rescue from the water we should talk about if they now that

John Maino

i could

do

i was just gonna say

you don't like heights but maybe you could do that but you don't swim

John Maino

you don't swim

I'm wearing those big PT-109.

Jimmy

can't go up high.

He can't go down low.

Got the bad hip.

Yeah, just report on it the next day.

John Maino

But those are always cool in New

York.

We were

John Maino

actually in New York one time.

I don't know, it was when an ocean liner comes in or something and they salute it and they fired off all those.

Yeah, that's, yes.

That was cool.

You can do that.

That's not why you get a fire bolt, but yes.

No, but it still looks cool.

It looks cool.

It'll welcome the ship.

But I don't know how many, I don't really use that a lot.

I don't know if we have a lot of, if we've ever fought a fire from the water.

I got the question asked

John Maino

out.

Maybe a grass fire?

I don't know.

I don't

John Maino

think so.

I don't know, maybe that'd be interesting enough.

We'll talk to them about next, that lithium batteries.

We'll

make

a list and

then we'll forget

where

we put it when we're in next time.

Not even a

question.

They do have the boat, I know that.

Wow, that would be so much fun to go on.

That would be fun, yeah.

I'll tell you what, the boat you want to go on is that police boat.

Yeah, I see

John Maino

that would go

up

John Maino

and down

here.

That thing is good.

Good.

I

John Maino

don't

know what two, I don't know what those are.

Mercury's on the back, but that's fast.

Yeah.

John Maino

I can't do that.

Gizmo says happy anniversary, guys.

Thank you, Gizmo.

Is it

John Maino

officially our anniversary

today?

Yesterday.

Okay.

Kind of came and went though.

Yeah last night I You know that he's gonna bring us stuff, but it was nice.

So it's sage called make us make us nice little key.

Yeah Sage called though, and that was nice.

You know, they call you.

John Maino

You know, I think he did add my phone up

But that was doesn't quick two years, I mean

Yeah, it's true.

Time goes faster, right?

This is true percent of your

John Maino

but we got is Naomi here, Todd.

Awesome.

We got Naomi Mose, who was just an unbelievable artist.

And

she

John Maino

runs the art garage.

Yeah.

Really, really good at everything she does for that.

Got this thing.

Remember on emergency at Johnny Gage.

They always had guys cooking.

Jim, could you you could be doing that?

That's right, you could be the cook.

You could be the cook.

I'd like to do that.

Mino, you could tidy

John Maino

up.

Really?

Tape, sample,

John Maino

sample.

You

think I'd be the guy to tidy up,

John Maino

Todd?

No.

What do you tell me almost every day?

I know exactly where you've been.

I

literally on my vacation got a note.

I walked in and there was cream around the blah, blah, blah.

There was open packets of sugar and Jim left his coffee mug out.

John Maino

Yeah, I know.

I know.

I

know.

That's why we

John Maino

love you.

But we got this great segment coming up.

It's called I am the Community.

It's brought to you by Insight Eye Care.

Sawyer Street in Oshkosh and Chain Drive in Ampton.

Naomi, who is just an incredible artist.

She'll tell us about her later project, but she does so much good for the art garage here in Green Bay, which is such a great area.

And it's on that part of the town that was kind of neglected.

after a while.

I mean, industry was there and then that kind of went away.

But the buildings are good bones.

But the buildings are awesome.

And she's taken over a couple for her art garage.

And I just think it's amazing what she has done to bring local art and let people have a chance of venue.

And there's more than just art in there.

I mean, we're going to talk about that.

People need to support those things.

And you know, it's what a difference it can make if another 20, 30 people show up for some of these events,

you know, and

that's what we need to put out a little bit more.

And then the city needs to put a little bit more infrastructure in there to call attention to it when you drive by.

It looks nice, but different lighting, some different curb appeal.

John Maino

And then we got Mike Steve Pack from Park Sports coming up today.

And Ashley from downtown Green Bay.

That's an interesting thing.

It is, that's what I'm reading about it.

They want

John Maino

everybody to sing.

I know they don't want to sing the car.

John Maino

You see that?

This is gonna be good.

Yes.

No audience.

We want everybody to attend to participate.

Yeah.

I

John Maino

like that.

That's a welcoming thing.

I think that's cool.

I might go.

Wow.

Wow.

Happy anniversary to you.

Back after this.

From

local stories to local voices, we're shining a spotlight on what matters right here in northeast Wisconsin.

It's more than just talk.

It's about connecting with the community.

This is Mino and the Mayor.

Now here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

John Maino

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back.

We are very proud and honored for I on the community brought to by inside I care Sawyer street, Nash gosh and chain drive and Ampton improving lines by improving site and we have an awesome person on right now Naomi mose from the art garage Gallery in Green Bay, but you're doing stuff all over and you just shown us this Titan missile that you're building right now

I'm a nuclear physicist That's

incredible what you're doing.

It's 10 feet

She's going to be 10 feet tall.

The diameter and that's not that wide.

No, no, she's not a

big

fat

lady.

It's not a totem pole, but it's like it's 10 feet tall

and

you're honoring.

Well, it's part of a big project part of that Depeer is doing.

Actually definitely Depeer is funding it.

And it's part of that whole development behind Stellas.

chop house, pages and pours, uh, bona fide juicery and, uh, uh, shanta colson studio.

Sure.

I can't get this to you.

I'd love

to.

This, I mean, that's really cool that DPR, and we love any place that listens to us.

But no, DPR is to honor the...

the history here,

the heritage

and get back to that.

I

was talking

about that earlier.

She and I did the collaboration there.

She has her own commission, but she's doing her own digital photography, kind of artistic photography.

So it's going to be there too.

Isn't

that great when a community steps up?

on the art, like definitely Depeer.

Of course, get quickly doing that and

anything she touches.

That little town has getting

a

lot of awards for what they do.

As it should.

And you have a lot of eye candy driving around when you go through

John Maino

that.

But even when I looked or when I did that book signing behind bosses, which I still think was a horrible mistake Green Bay did by

letting

John Maino

them go.

That's an iconic.

John Maino

But anyway, they had a book signing and it was the same night as their

Like their farmers market type thing and just sit in the back.

It would have been just parking lots.

They turned into this really cool thing.

Yeah, they really do.

They're just high charged.

They understand the value of art.

And

they're not alone.

Green Bay's coming along too.

We were getting there.

Green Bay's coming

along.

Oshkosh has done a really good job.

And some of these smaller communities, I mean, I don't want to discount smaller, 10, 12,000, but Nina Monashia, they get people like you that are like, hey, look, this,

This is not only great, as you said, eye candy, but it reduces crime.

It brings in a better clientele in terms of

creative people.

There's that personal neighborhood pride.

People want to take care of the sculptures and the murals.

They don't want to do vandalism.

They don't want to do things like

that.

And don't you, if you're living in a community where everybody keeps their homes nicer, it makes you feel like I need to keep up with everything else too.

and I see that happening in Green Bay as well.

So

the art garage is where you're headquartered.

Well, no, I'm not headquartered.

I said

John Maino

she was the owner and she's

golden.

No, no, no, no, no.

I'm

John Maino

not the owner.

Yeah, the Wendy Wimmer shimmer.

I said, if I had to start being

John Maino

specific on this show now, I might as well give up my career.

Oh yeah.

We

have

the spoken word

with music and right now saw is going on.

John Maino

Absolutely.

A good energy.

John Maino

Absolutely.

It's like putting on a little nicer pair of clothes when you go out instead of just looking like a slobber.

Which I do.

I think

sometimes art, if the parents weren't in art,

They don't think their kid can be, and their kid can be super talented in art.

Oh gosh, I've seen that a

lot.

You can see it in my house.

But it's amazing, and if they can just get that exposure once to the art garage, or to someone like you, and that can open up.

whole world for them.

John Maino

And it's not if I just want to say this because Jim and I came to one of your events.

Oh, yeah, a couple

of them.

John Maino

And it wasn't because I've done other art things at certain places.

There's a little bit of a, what are you doing here?

Kind of nose in the air sort of thing thing.

Okay.

You guys were just the opposite.

Exactly the opposite, which was so cool.

We just want to get everybody involved with us.

And you appreciate people

John Maino

being there.

Right.

We really do.

Because that's the essence of what we are is about

making other people happy and feel good.

Yes, we want to make a low income with it, but I'll tell you what.

We're fine with that.

We get the good endorphins from it.

Absolutely.

And we don't have enough time to go through everything, but the website, people just this art garage, where do we go just to see what's going on this week

next week?

The website, but the reason I'm really here is I have a couple of big things that I want to talk about events that I'm affiliated with.

Number one is the art garage has their annual board meeting.

And you came to it last year, I appreciate that.

It's this Saturday from four to six.

And we'll talk about what we accomplished this last year.

We're having big things happening there.

We're really getting solvent and being healthy.

And with Lindsay as our leader.

I've seen such great growth.

John Maino

We've created such a niche that hadn't been there that

people that are really

John Maino

interested

in.

Well, people forgot about us for a while.

In the beginning, I think we had a big hoohaha and then it kind of went down.

It depends, I guess I'd have to say depends on the people that are involved with it too.

Sure.

People talk about nonprofits.

Well, they need money.

You know, I mean, people think I just, that just drives me crazy.

I think it's one of the worst.

names we have for an industry is non-profit.

You need to make money.

I mean, because you reinvest your money.

You don't pay dividends like

some

of us in private sector do.

So I just think it's, I think that's fine that you say you're solvent.

And because some of these non-profits are just struggling and struggling.

And if you're making money, people like to give you money if you're making money.

It's weird.

People are.

John Maino

They want to bet on a winner.

They do.

And they do.

So if you can say, look, we've got.

X amount in the bank.

They're like, okay, you guys are gonna be around.

I'm happy to donate.

But if you say, look, if we don't get some money, we

close our

doors.

It's the last cause.

John Maino

We really

enjoyed it there last year.

Oh yeah, it

John Maino

was fun.

It was good energy, wasn't it?

Yeah, it was

great.

So four to six right here on Main Street.

Right on Main Street.

Yep, okay.

John Maino

I know I've asked you this before.

What was that building?

Any idea what year it was built?

No, but...

It was a canning company.

Yeah.

And then Dean's ice cream was right next to it.

Okay.

John Maino

Yeah, that's right.

That's

John Maino

right.

That's right.

Okay.

I barely remember that

John Maino

because I love that building.

Yeah, I do too.

And the whole

neighborhood's cool.

It is very cool.

And we have the compound, which is right next door now.

Right.

They bought the building and so we lease back.

So that's another reason why we're more solvent now.

Explain

John Maino

that please.

Yeah, the two

John Maino

I love that little

niche

John Maino

part of town

it is and Main Street is actually the arts district.

Did you know that

John Maino

I did not

well that's it's actually labeled the arts district

Okay, but we have to put some infrastructure in there to call

people who drive by and walk by that

it is the

artistic, you

know,

like you go, there's arts districts everywhere in the

United

States.

But to call it is one thing.

And I think that's, I think you're right.

I mean, nobody's questioning that.

But I think there just has to be a little bit more infrastructure done, either lighting or landscaping or pavers, something to say, like, when you step into on that sidewalk, well, this is different.

You could do some really cool lighting over there, and then you say, I'm in this district.

I get it.

You know what I mean?

Well, there's some people involved with that district.

Hope they're listening.

What else are you going on?

Well, the other thing is, I am, as you know, John, I'm a member of the Green Bay Art Colony, the oldest women's art group.

And we have a wonderful exhibition.

People don't

John Maino

realize how old this thing

is.

That's over 100 years old.

John Maino

That's something.

That's

awesome.

Start out with a bunch of cultured ladies having tea parties and painting together.

So it's developed into many multimedia artists now.

We have 28 women artists.

It's all women.

Anyway, we were honored this year to be the first local group to show at the Malva Center in Dupere.

John Maino

That's cool.

And we have our exhibit up.

It's called Art of the Aviary.

And the exhibition dates are present, the present to August 13th.

Can

John Maino

we keep that here?

Yes.

All

right.

We have got to get more people into the Malva Center.

I

know.

That is a beautiful building.

And it's for everyone.

And I think, and look, I love the design.

I love everything about it.

But I think it maybe is a little intimidating.

It's not the right word, but I think it's ostentatious.

It's a big building.

And it's like.

It's

not like ultra modern too.

It is but I think it which is awesome.

It is but I think they want it to be like a library like you don't have any issues walking into library.

No, nobody does but

That's what it really is.

It's a public not public because there's something's gonna pay for but the food everything about that is great And I just think we got to get more people in there.

So this will get draw some people

through

John Maino

August 13th.

Yeah,

correct We had a wonderful reception last Friday, you know, we had a

a very massive turnout.

We were very excited about

John Maino

that.

And just to read an exhibition of artistic interpretations showcasing the Green Bay Art Colony.

Yes.

That's awesome.

They're going to get some high school choirs in there.

Again, that's just a beautiful building and, you know, really privately funded.

And Art

John Maino

of the Avery.

So it's all bird themes?

Yep.

Birds or flight or whatever.

John Maino

You know, I used to mount.

I used to be

a... Wait a minute.

What?

Oh.

Careful what you say.

What was that now?

John Maino

This is Marshall.

Who did

John Maino

you I used to mount blackbirds?

Oh, oh, why it just because I was a tax.

I was trying to be a

taxidermist.

Oh

Okay

So Naomi this is it are you there explaining it or how do people learn about it or is it self-guided you're

John Maino

sticking around

the

John Maino

right?

Okay.

All right.

John Maino

Okay.

We'll hit on that

Great having you here, Naomi Mose, Art Garage, Eye of the Community, back right after

this.

Thank you.

Kathryn Lake

You're listening to Civic Media.

Find the latest news, information, and archives of all your favorite shows on the Civic Media website,

John Maino

civicmedia.us.

Turn it back over to you one more time.

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

There you go.

All right.

Just think you got

that right.

You just put them over your ears.

There

you go.

The creative early for me.

Go ahead

John Maino

and

tell me

John Maino

what

else is on

John Maino

your summer schedule here.

Well, as the guys mentioned, I'm working on that large.

Sculpture project for Depeer and that's gonna be finished by the end of July.

There's

gotta be a huge dedication

to that because that's so cool.

Tina Quigley, director, definitely Depeer is

gonna be.

Everybody knows her.

She's a big name.

She

used to be downtown Green

Bay.

Yeah, she did.

We miss her.

Anyway, that's

great.

Well, good.

Well, you make sure you get back to us on that because that

whole concept is

cool.

But I think that's that's gonna be great.

And I'm really looking forward to seeing that.

John Maino

Now when you have these kind of projects like that, where is your your client base?

So to speak is it is it a wide-ranging area?

Or is it more Green Bay, DPR, Ledgeview, Howard-ish?

Because you

John Maino

guys bring something really unique to this area.

Thanks.

I think especially with the collaboration work I've been doing with my friend, Shanna Colts.

You have a story behind the picture, the stories, a story behind the artwork and

I think it's more interesting when you have a sculpture with flat work or 2D work than just a sculpture or just 2D work.

And so it's really, I think, pretty cool.

Well, we had John McGivran come out and photograph and put us on the air for one of his...

He is not too much energy.

No That guy's awesome.

Yeah,

he is awesome.

He just talks to you like he looks you in the eye and he's like you're the most important thing that's on his mind The

next half hour is nobody else in the world but you and

yeah,

he's yeah, he's he's a great

make you feel like he really fuck builds you up.

Yeah, and he's

funny and he's,

you

could do that, John.

He is, he's a good guy.

Love

him.

So he was altered.

He, is that aired?

Yes.

Okay.

All right.

You can check it out the Dupierrex episode.

It's actually from...

I think it aired last year.

Okay, but I've people have told me they've seen it rotating

I've

seen it.

It's a great episode.

He goes

to St.

Norbert.

He does all that kind of just you know, I gotta see this.

I haven't seen it.

Oh, you didn't know that?

Well, my website to Naomi Moe's arts.com and you can see it there.

Yeah, I mean, he's done a few things in this community is Green Bay and I'm sure Ash, I saw a lot of stuff and

goes

with the truck drivers with the Schneider and

oh, I didn't know that.

Well, he'll go he'll do anything

to bring out the unique best things in your community.

I just

love

him.

I

think he does a great, great

job.

He's been great for the Midwest, that's

for sure.

All right,

so you have one

more

John Maino

big

one here.

Well, and then, sorry, everybody.

I have also been honored to be part of the Summer, Art, Fall, Summer and Fall Sturgeon Bay Art Crawl.

So this is a little bit of the area, but I'm one of 38 artists that are showing in the Sturgeon Bay

area, that means it goes all the way from Sturgeon Bay to that, Sevastopol and all that, all of

that.

That's awesome.

And it's a weekend.

So for anybody thinking about popping up to Dore County, July 12th and 13th, you don't have to go too far from Green Bay because Sturgeon Bay is, you know, an hour away, a nice little drive.

And the hours are from 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m.

daily.

You know, there are maps all over.

If you go to Sturgeon Bay Art Crawl,

and

John Maino

get 27 different topics you

can go

John Maino

to.

Wow.

Now that's cool.

So this is an art crawl like, okay, did you go place to place?

Is it

27 different artists?

Yes.

Wow.

Now that's fun.

Yeah, we have 38 artists total, but some of them aren't doing the summer show.

So yeah, it's just, it's just great.

And they,

you talk about you, you work in an arts district at the Eric Raj, but if you look, Door County Structure Bay, that's kind of an art

community.

I mean, they lean into

art.

There's some amazing artists there.

I'm little compared to those people.

John Maino

I'm just looking at some of their stuff on their

little pictures.

This

John Maino

is really cool.

No, they're glassblower.

And he's going to be having demonstrations.

Jeremy Popolka and his wife, Stephanie Trenchard.

All right.

That's a 12th and 13th.

That's coming up.

Yep.

That's

not very far.

That's why I want to talk about it.

Okay.

Yeah.

We'll get people up there for that.

That's, but we have to get people.

A lot of people are going to go to that thing.

That's,

it's got its own draw already, but because I'm honored to be part of that, I really want to talk about it.

Where are you at?

I am in the Tambourine Lounge, number nine.

And there's four other artists in that group and that, in that building.

But that's just gotta be, you're not going to see all that in

one day.

So I just,

we

have to make sure we can see you.

I would appreciate it.

That would make my day.

This is cool.

Oh man, I'm serious.

We can see that.

Would you say it is surgeonbaidartcrawl.com?

Yes.

It's

a simple website to pull it all up and there's pictures of all of our work.

And where I'm going to be is in a really nice nucleus of six artists.

That's awesome.

There's other studios.

Hey,

John Maino

we're so well known for...

Packers and drinking beer and brats and whatever, whatever.

We've had some great athletes.

I love sports,

too.

I know.

But there's

more to life than sports.

And I

think we just want to, especially for the youth that

I want

to play football.

Well, yeah, there's art.

There's dancing.

There's

music.

Well, haven't I heard some football players took our dance class when they're younger and it's helping with balance.

Absolutely.

No question.

The executives that took music.

Doctors, this guy across the street who

runs this

six billion dollar company,

he's an

unbelievable musician.

So yeah, and it all works together.

And

people like

you make people more aware of it.

And I think that's awesome.

Thank you.

So this weekend, no, not, no, July.

Yeah, is it?

No, when the open house is the fourth to the sixth to learn about what you're doing at the art garage.

And that's, no,

that is this Saturday, the 28th

on

force.

Okay, this Saturday.

Okay, good.

And that's open to the public.

It's open to the public, the more the merrier

and what you've done and where you're going.

Correct.

All right, cool.

All

John Maino

right.

Thank you, everybody.

John Maino

Next year, can I bring some of my silo wood coffee tables in?

Say yes,

just to get them off the air.

I would love to see it.

Yes, sir.

John Maino

Thank you.

Thank you.

You're the

John Maino

best.

It's great having you on here.

Check it out.

Thank you.

I'm honored that you asked.

John Maino

Naomi Moe's

Art Garage.

It's

John Maino

fantastic.

Mike Steve Pack from Fox Sports will be joining us

next.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back special.

Thanks Naomi Mohs from the art garage and a whole bunch of other things that she does Really great having her on here.

We want to promote a lot more about the great events She has coming up the community wouldn't happen with all people like her.

Absolutely

hurt.

There's just so many people that yeah

John Maino

another one That's like that.

Well sort of Mike Steve sort of big Mike.

It's the guy Tell him

the

John Maino

good morning.

Good morning,

sir.

How are you?

I am wonderful.

Thanks for asking.

So were you at

John Maino

that game yesterday that was legendary?

I was, well, it was supposed to be legendary.

I don't know if it really was, but it was exciting to be there.

A lot of people with us, and it was a good ball game.

And the Miz lived up to his reputation and pitched extremely well.

Skanes didn't have his best stuff at all from the get-go.

So it was early on.

You knew it was not going to be this spectacular matchup of pitching performances, but at least the Brewers did win.

Pitt played well, didn't get a lot of hits, but had timely hits in the four run inning.

And it was a nice win.

John Maino

But this guy, again, knock on wood and whatever, whatever.

I mean, it reminds me of like when Dwight Gooden first came into Major League Baseball or one of those guys where it's like, hey, we can't quite hit this guy.

Right.

I mean, he had his good stuff yesterday.

He was triple digits from the get-go, threw in some great off-speed stuff, and had eight strikeouts in his five innings.

And it was great to be able to see this young talent on the Milwaukee side.

John Maino

Yeah, because we've seen her against them a lot.

Right.

Some of you against somebody.

Hey, Michael, how's it looking?

What are you

doing this fall?

I'll be starting yet another season of working with the NFL on Fox in September, looking forward to the new challenges that the season will bring and just trying to prepare for that in the weeks prior and enjoying summer right now.

John Maino

You got

a pack of games?

John Maino

Okay, so Jim wants to get the Pope

to level.

Let me explain this.

Go ahead.

Something that we want to get really certified by by Rome by the Pope now that this guy's from Chicago Johnny and I and Todd's in now even though he's Lutheran is Joining the team and we want to bring the

John Maino

convert for us.

Yeah, he is just for that week We want to get Pope the Green Bay to come to the shrine and have mass at Lambeau Field.

Are you in?

I come We're an altar boy,

John Maino

of course

Okay, okay, see

John Maino

we

have another altar boy cuz John I

John Maino

volunteered to be one of his altar boys

Yeah, and I my brother's a priest so he's gonna come con celebrate with with the Pope So we're putting the team together, but we got one step first We have to get clearance from the bishop and the annuncio.

Yeah, and that's my job.

So just hang tight put that on your calendar Upcoming visit with the Pope and I'll give you the time

That would be that would be awesome.

Okay, and stranger things have happened.

John Maino

I know

couldn't you see a

John Maino

mask at Lambeau Field?

I

John Maino

Could I'm envisioning right now.

Yeah, he did it a dent not this pole, but the proof they were there Denver, I think New

John Maino

England had one So this could so Mike we need your

Papal connection

because you were there last week not last week three weeks ago because you missed the draft that must have been wait

a minute Wait a minute if you missed we were there during the funeral the day that the the pope passed.

Yeah, it's surreal Oh, that's right.

You were there Wow Yeah, we did and you know, we just obviously as the world had seen a day and a half earlier He was he gave a blessing and he did in St.

Peter's Square and yeah and met with our vice president

And now, all of a sudden, we're at this vineyard retreat having a cup of coffee.

We look up at the big screen and we saw it in Italian that the pope had passed and it was surreal and strange.

But while you were there, life went on.

I had nothing to do with it.

John Maino

Hey, Mike, my dream is to go to Italy.

You've been there.

Where do I stay off?

What's where should I go because I want to go to northern Italy where my family's all from but I the Rome aspect of it doesn't do it for me.

Oh

come

John Maino

on

I think I think a trip to Rome is Necessary fundamental has to happen returning to Rome not necessarily because there's so many other Extraordinary places within the country, but no Rome Rome is impossible to beat because of

the history and the culture and the sheer magnificence of that city.

It's unbelievable and you go into this cathedral and you think oh my god there's nothing more beautiful than this then you go into the next one and it's it's just that there that's their industry and it's uh it's unbelievable there I just uh loved it and

I use this phrase a lot and I'm gonna stop using it but jaw dropping it is everywhere you look in that country and in Rome especially because of the the beauty and the magnificence of the architecture and the

and in the streets and the sections of the city.

But that said, John, there are many other beautiful, remarkable jaw-dropping portions of that country.

And then the food is great, the wine is awesome, and you walk everywhere, which is, it's a healthy community, I think.

I've been here a couple times.

Those things you mentioned, the eating and the drinking, the pasta and the wine, I had my full.

In fact, I think I was asked to leave a couple places, which is not unusual.

However, I

lost three pounds on the trip.

See, because of walking.

Exactly.

Yeah, that's awesome, Mike.

All right.

All right.

Well, anyway, the draft, we'll talk about that.

Yeah.

We know you got,

John Maino

where are you going to another Brewer's game today?

Or what do you got going on here?

No, no, they don't play today, John.

Oh, that's right.

Day off.

Hey, Mike, are you into the afternoon games or do you like the night games?

I love

the afternoon games.

I love afternoon games.

Me too.

Unless I have plans to stay the night, then it doesn't matter.

But no, no, no.

We, uh, we, uh, and yesterday, uh, we bought the tickets, uh, plenty in advance.

Not knowing, of course, the, the matchup was going to be what it was.

But, uh, Wednesday's, uh, half price tickets.

John Maino

So 48,000.

Did I read that right?

Uh, for, for, for

about

John Maino

42,000.

for

a midweek game.

Yeah, Wednesday afternoon game.

Don't you look around and say, don't you people work?

It was an electric crowd.

John Maino

Yeah.

I mean, that was one of the biggest games in major like regular season history.

I've seen in a while for two young phenoms to go

head to head.

Correct.

The headlines were there.

And as I said, both pitchers came out, schemes had issues early on, control problems through 51 pitches and his first two innings.

and really never had his stuff.

But the Miz was was strong from the get-go and five really great innings.

John Maino

Oh, and by the way, the son of a legendary basketball player from Green Bay.

What's the fourth player taken in the NBA last night?

Right.

Nipple.

Isn't that

John Maino

crazy?

It is.

But quite honestly, I'd seen all the prep.

that the family was going through.

And getting, I'm thinking to myself, this young boy from Milwaukee is going to be taken in the first round.

I thought, scratch my head.

They may be thinking too much about this, but I was wrong.

And not only one young man.

Two young men from Duke both went

John Maino

back and just a little over a year ago.

He was playing against like Green Bay Preble.

Right.

Unreal.

It is a phenomenal occurrence.

All right.

So, Mike, you got, you know, Fox Sports, the leader in that.

What are you looking forward to this NFL season?

Something that you're like, I can't wait for this.

Some

matchups.

Seeing the crew, seeing the fellas, being with them.

Yeah.

Because that is as important to me.

as anything else, the camaraderie we have, the friendships that we have, the communal effort that we have putting on a broadcast and preparing and researching, and the laughs that are endless.

Just a purpose is the most important thing we have, in my opinion.

John Maino

That's the whole thing

keeping us

John Maino

alive.

Great advice.

A

lot of wisdom.

John Maino

Always a pleasure having you on, my friend.

Thank you, boys.

Have a great weekend

and enjoy the summer when it comes

back.

And we'll let you know when the pulp's here.

Yep.

Alright, I'll

John Maino

probably know it, but please

do give me a clue.

Get your

John Maino

hassock ready to

bring it out of

John Maino

retirement.

It's cassock.

Yeah,

mine was

John Maino

retired

in

John Maino

the

Vatican.

John Maino

And a surplus.

Yeah, and a scapular.

All right.

Thank

you, Mike.

John Maino

Do your work to do.

All right, Mike.

See you, buddy.

You're the

John Maino

best.

I'm out.

Get rid of these guys.

Was it hassock or cassock?

Hassock is the little ball.

I told you, I told

John Maino

that priest that mine was retired at the Vatican,

right?

Yeah,

John Maino

he did.

Oh, man.

That they don't even have a well all the boy hall of fame.

John Maino

You didn't know that If they

did I'd

John Maino

be in

it.

John Maino

So yeah, I got my my scapula's retire to Yeah, yeah, it's

like I didn't know they

John Maino

had something like

that's like Did you when you?

Communion you had that yeah that okay those things are cool

too.

Yeah

now that yeah, there's

something wait a minute There was some motioning what when you it was a brass

with

a wooden

handle

that you held when people- For

the host?

They used to take communion on the top.

So you would drop the host to the ground.

When we were kids.

And you had to- Did you ever catch one?

Because if they put it on

Kathryn Lake

the top of

those old ladies would sometimes write

Kathryn Lake

their thumbs and

shake and then you had- They'd piece and drop it and you're like- You jabber the jungler a little bit.

And- But you couldn't like to go, Got it!

You couldn't do that.

You had to just like give it back to the priest and- Oh yeah.

I was- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I

John Maino

was an- I was an- I was

an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an- I was an-

I'm

Kathryn Lake

telling you.

Back after this.

John Maino

Well,

he wanted you to know that that little thing you were talking about that.

Yeah, apparently is that where you're carrying the host down there?

No, it

John Maino

was there in case they dropped a

case of a lot of their models.

And Mike called it and said, tell Mino and the mayor it's called a pallet.

No, it's not.

But okay, I'll we'll get back to Mike.

He isn't.

He's not.

I don't think he's in the altar boy Hall of Fame.

I don't think he is.

So I

will.

Okay.

Are you?

Yeah.

There isn't such a thing

there.

I told a priest that's what that's what we'll do with the fire station down here, right?

You'll get the fire station.

We'll do a hall of fame for

John Maino

like this.

I like this a lot.

We get Ashley joining us.

And I think Ashley's thinking, what in the heck did I just walk

into?

This is very out of context.

So I don't know exactly what's going on here.

John Maino

Midwest Music Connection.

I'm not even going to try your last name and I know offense.

No, just Ashley from Midwest Music Connection.

I answered to that.

That's fine.

All

John Maino

right.

Ashley Kaye.

One day quite this.

John Maino

Okay.

Now let me just back up just for your short Midwest music connection.

Is that your company?

That is our organization.

Your organization.

Okay.

Yep.

And it's very low commitment because we're all busy adults, right?

Okay.

And

We send out practice videos ahead of time so people can practice and learn their parts.

And then we just get together for an afternoon and sing together.

So it's very community-based.

You don't have to be a professional.

And it's for connection and just for the joy of singing.

So when you get back together, it's four-part harmony

then?

Right now we're doing three-part harmony.

Yeah, we need some more guys.

Send some guys our way, then we can add a second guy

there.

Take these

two

with

you.

Well, don't expect much.

You're welcome to come.

Yeah, I'm

John Maino

here.

What what is the song that you're going to?

Sure, sure So usually to pick two pieces to do one is more of a down tempo Ballad and then one is more of like a power anthem.

So this time we are singing titanium, but we arranged it ourselves.

So it's more of a down tempo soulful cool

A ballad and then we're doing from now on from The Greatest Showman, which is an uptempo, dancing in the Isles type thing.

Yeah, so we do have like... So it is, it's a contrast.

We

hear that.

So yeah, it's a contrast of...

one slow song, one fast song.

And then we run the pieces, we, you know, run the parts, kind of have a practice run through.

And then we sing.

And it's, there's no audience.

That's the thing.

Everybody who shows up sings.

Yes.

Everybody who shows up sings.

And a lot of these people don't know each other.

Right.

Do they?

Does anybody solo?

Like, never enough.

Great showman, never enough.

Which is like one of my favorites.

But that whole movie where...

Play, I guess.

Always.

The soundtrack is on repeat at my house.

It is.

It's great.

Yes.

Does anybody solo or is it all?

It is.

OK.

That's a really good question.

And we actually just talked about this.

My sister and I.

Because I'll come,

but

I'm just

kidding.

Everybody that comes, everybody's so talented.

and some people have experience, right?

But we decided that there's not gonna be any solos because it goes away from the idea of being one voice,

Kathryn Lake

okay?

This is a community.

This is not for showing off really.

A lot of people come just to have this outlet to sing together.

And we don't want to highlight just one person.

So it is definitely a group intimate atmosphere.

Which is great.

And at the end

of the day, that's the best thing to do, although

our egos are gonna get hurt in the beginning.

But that's okay, I'll get through that.

The people who come though, you don't want shower singers in there.

I mean, you want people, you don't want tone deaf people.

I mean, you want

people who can sing.

Okay, well,

John Maino

here's the

thing.

Oh, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it,

John Maino

watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it,

watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it,

watch it, watch

it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it,

watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch it, watch

has it a little backwards, where you think you have to be good in order to do something, right?

And no, granted, if you're getting paid to do...

Singing or being an entertainer you have to be kind of good if you're getting paid for it But I think you know if people don't believe they're good at it They just don't do it and that's so sad to me that you lose a lot of the opportunity for the joy and connection the art of music so

really

What you said is beautiful.

So we want the people who have experience, that's great.

Yes, we need people to carry, but we also want the people who sing in their cars.

We want you, the people who just enjoy jamming out by themselves.

That's the energy we want, right?

Did you talk

John Maino

about a guy you sat by in church who just thought he

was

John Maino

belt and it was kind of loud.

You know, it's like, and I didn't, you know, it's church.

You really can't say anything.

No.

Yeah.

So I, you know, we were Lutheran as we've pointed out this morning, but there's this one old lady, right?

Just, she would sing out, and it was always off, and it would crack my sisters, and I am so hard.

My dad would, like, elbow us, like, to stop, and then all of a sudden you'd look over, and dad was bent over, you know, laughing.

Yeah,

John Maino

totally.

How was that person?

Oh.

John Maino

Well, you've even said, though, you didn't think that I'm tone deaf.

Well, I don't think.

I know you don't.

Hey, what about the ages for your

group?

Sure.

So we want ages 15 and up because we want adults, okay?

And this was beautiful.

We had last time we had a

daughter, a high school daughter, come with her dad.

So it's something they could do together.

We do have a family that comes, brother, sister, mother.

So it is for adults or- And do they

John Maino

know the songs are going to be singing before

they come in?

Yes.

So we produce practice videos.

Okay.

So you kind of mentioned earlier, I wasn't sure, but that's okay, go ahead.

My sister's more of the public.

Okay, you're gonna have to hold

John Maino

that for a second.

This is really interesting.

It's

gonna be a

John Maino

fun, it's a cool event.

Midwest Music Connection.

I could see you and your daughter.

I think I could too.

Yeah, and me and my

daughter.

Take Mino and the Mayor on the go with the Civic Media app.

Live, local, and always streaming.

Download the app, choose WISS or WGBW, and tune in anywhere, anytime.

Now, back to Mino and the Mayor.

Here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

John Maino

Thank you very much.

Welcome back.

Trucker Thursday here.

Mino and the Mayor, 97.9 FM WGBW, 98.3, 96.5 FM WISS.

And of course, the Civic Media app.

Man, we've had some phenomenal guests today.

Just fantastic.

And Ashley Kay is cream of the crop,

I think, with your energy.

Thank you.

John Maino

Wow.

You have a little energy.

Naomi, I'm sorry, Naomi.

It's a tie.

It's a tie.

Even I thought the Fire Chief

came in with some energy today.

The impact was awesome.

Yeah.

So we're talking, we'd love events, right?

And Johnny and I really, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay, we like to talk about what's great about, there's so many things great about.

this whole area, but unique events and you've got, yours is kind of different,

right?

There's nothing like this around the area.

So

let's talk about it again.

I think everyone likes to sing.

Some people can and some people can't.

Did he just do something?

I can look at the recording.

We record the show.

It's in this video.

I'm not touching this with a 10 foot pole.

But you have an event.

That allows people to sing and kind of a little bit professionally together to bring it together for three hours and put on a tremendous

Yeah, it's not even a show, because we'd have no audience.

That's the thing.

That's

just kind of keeping me away.

Yeah.

Oh, really, you want to?

No, I just go ahead.

We do video record it, so we can share it, you know.

But we did do, after our last one, we did a poll, and it was very split whether they wanted an audience or not, because it's, singing is such a vulnerable thing for people to get up and sing, especially if you haven't done it in a long time.

So in this small group, you kind of have that safety net.

And it's very less intimidating when there isn't a bunch of people sitting there expecting.

And again, that's why I think our culture is kind of screwed up is you have to do it to perform.

And we do it for joy.

I just want to

John Maino

read your mission statement.

Right.

Not for performance.

No audience.

We encourage all attendees to participate in the music.

Let's make music together.

Yes.

And it's for connection for meeting like-minded people who are there that enjoy music.

So it's really cool.

Yeah, there's a place on the East Coast.

that we kind of follow, that we're like, oh, that's cool.

Can we bring it to our area?

And we did.

And the feedback was just phenomenal from, like, oh, I forgot how much I love to sing to life-changing someone.

And I just want to read your

John Maino

press release here.

Whether you're a seasoned vocalist or just love to sing in the car, this event is for you.

With practice videos provided ahead of time, participants will arrive ready to sing, connect, and celebrate the power of community through music.

This event is all about the joy of singing together, says Jennifer.

showman of Midwest music, is that

your sister?

That's my sister.

She's the public outreach person.

She is even more energized than me.

I'm the behind-the-scenes person, so I do all the graphics and the editing and the reels, and I like doing the behind-the-scenes.

She's the one that finds our people and pulls them

John Maino

in.

She's the one who comes out of her

John Maino

shell.

We wanted to create a fun, welcoming space where anyone can come meet new people, make something beautiful in just a few hours.

Don't miss this unique chance to be part of something inspiring and musical.

Bring your voice, bring a friend, and join us for an unforgettable afternoon of harmony and connection.

Find us on Facebook by searching One Day Choir Event Green Bay or email jennifer.shomin at gmail.com for more information.

This once again, it's Saturday, June 28th from 11 to 2 at the Compound in Green Bay.

It's a beautiful space.

It's a big open area with a lot of natural lights and the acoustics are awesome.

John Maino

We love those buildings over there.

We love that whole neighborhood.

That's the whole arts area, which

is that's

very cool.

Right, that you picked that.

Someone's going to, they're listening like, I want to get the music.

How do they know if they want, you know,

lead ten or whatever.

I don't know what the categories

are.

You have soprano, alto, and then the guys.

Again, we need more guys, and maybe we can split that into two parts, too.

OK, I got it.

The soprano's part is usually your melody.

It's a little higher.

But if you're new to it, we usually suggest the soprano part.

The alto part's a little bit lower, and you're going to find a lot more of those harmonies in there.

So if you want something a little more challenging, one of those songs we're doing, the alto part, has some of the melody as well.

I just say pick one and kind of go with it.

And that's why you can listen ahead of time on the practice videos.

You said all three?

We do send all three.

Oh, OK.

Well, that

answers my question.

Yeah.

All right.

So it's a playlist on our YouTube page.

OK.

And we just send you the link.

And then

what are you comfortable with?

So

I have a

little idea.

Maybe.

if I can get that information from you.

Maybe

I'll have it here and then tomorrow morning, you guys can practice

on there.

Oh, that'd be so cool.

Absolutely, I'm

in.

What a great idea.

Yeah.

Well,

tomorrow's

our day.

That's why I'm the producer of the

show.

We dedicate our last hour of our show on Fridays to music.

Oh, we have Dennis from the Glam Band hosted.

We'll do

this very bright

and

early when

nobody's listening.

We'll do it from, maybe even before we go on the air.

So, 5.50.

Wow.

It's really cool that you're doing it.

You got the idea.

You and your sister obviously get along very

well.

Are you

both in

music?

I am.

So I teach.

I teach at Appleton Rock School.

They're actually one of our sponsors.

They also have a Green Bay location.

So check them out.

And we take all ages from preschool to retired.

That's what I was

John Maino

talking to you about,

John.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful people.

I

John Maino

just drove past them recently.

I saw their building.

OK.

John Maino

Is it on Mason?

This location's on Main Street.

Main Street, yes.

Yep.

Because I've been

John Maino

to Southern Billboard with the thing.

And it's like, hey, that sounds like

kind of

John Maino

people we should get on our show.

Yeah, yeah.

So I teach there.

And I do therapeutic music for nursing homes and things like that.

So I'm around music all the time.

And my sister just loves music.

And music was our life when we were growing up.

We did choir.

We sang in church.

We did pep band, things like that.

And then after high school, you just kind of stop.

people do, like you kind of get out of it, and we wanted to have the opportunity to come together to do it again.

People our age, right, that may have been out of it for a while, but don't have a whole lot of time to

John Maino

commit.

I wish you had more

John Maino

enthusiasm

for this.

I love that.

She's like, I'm just not feeling it.

I

don't

feel it.

Yeah, I want to get up for this.

Help me.

This

is awesome.

It sells itself.

It really does sell itself.

And you gotta be there to, when you're there, it's magical.

Like it really does come together.

Even me and my sister, we just, whoa.

Is there a

cost to the, it's gotta be a cost

to this.

Okay, so we are off taking donations, give as you feel.

So if you go to our Eventbrite.

events.

There's a link for that and our suggested donation is $20 because

Kathryn Lake

that will

help pay for our space because we are renting the space out.

But we also provide a couple treats.

We have a couple surprises coming in on Saturday.

So we do hope to

give a

little bit so that we can support this event.

$40 for a date night.

That's like, you know what I mean?

Like that's

a lot of fun.

And

Father Daughter is what I was talking about

too.

That's what I was

talking about.

Two people.

Yep.

Absolutely.

Because we do.

They put a lot of time into this, but we love it.

Like you can just, we can really get up.

The music that

you pick, which is, I think that's interesting.

We don't pick, we let the people vote on it.

So the people in our current one day choir, we send feedback forms and then we give them a list of songs and we vote on the next one.

John Maino

Wow.

Very democratic.

It is.

But we want to serve the people.

Jim's against that.

No, I'm going to tell you what songs.

I'm going to tell you.

I would look at other options.

That's fine.

Wow, that's kind of cool that they picked...

Yeah, we gave them a list that they picked.

We want to we want the people to come back, right?

So we want to see there would only be

one.

This is the list.

There's one.

Right.

But we did last time we did a greatest showman song.

We did this is me, which is a very power ballad and power anthem.

And then they wanted to do another greatest showman song because right.

It's so good.

So like, oh, good.

I guess we're doing another greatest showman song, but it fits in.

really the theme for our songs is kind of like self-empowerment, you know, strength and numbers, community.

I was just gonna say, it seems

John Maino

like this is the kind of thing that everybody that comes to that and performs, they want that community support and want

to be a part

John Maino

of

something.

But

the power of song that's why I said, if you do never enough next year, I'm definitely gonna sing that.

Okay.

What's that by?

It's

great to show them, but it's a lady that sings it.

They hit those high notes?

John Maino

I know, I'd be

tough.

We got you, we got

John Maino

you.

But again, would you say 16 was the minimum age?

15 and up.

This is so cool.

We're glad you're on here.

We're glad to promote.

I hope more people pick up on this because I think there's a lot of people, if they knew about this, they'd be like, hey, let's

do this.

Right.

And this is just our second event.

We got together in March to do one, mostly to get some old friends together.

We pulled in some people from the community.

Hey, you want to join us?

And everybody had such a good time.

When's the next one?

What are you doing again?

What is Midwest

John Maino

Music Connection that you're wearing on your shirt?

Yes, that is our organization.

Because people are like, who are you doing this through?

We're like, well, it's just me and my sister doing this.

We have to name it something.

So

Kathryn Lake

we

came up with Midwest Music Connection because we want to expand it to all over.

We want to pull people in.

We have some connections in Madison.

We would love to expand to doing it in another city.

Did you guys either

John Maino

want to perform professionally at one time?

I mean, I play a lot of weddings, and I accompany people.

Oh, that's what you do?

You sing at the weddings?

I mostly play piano.

Oh, wow.

Yeah, yeah.

But I teach piano, I teach voice, I teach ukulele, and a little bit of drums.

So, yeah.

Wow, you're

pretty...

So I guess I'm professional.

I don't know.

I teach really for self.

Betterment self care self, you know for wellness and outlet a creative outlet.

So that's how I teach What are you doing

next Thursday?

When I

John Maino

when I sing I hear magic.

Oh, yeah,

John Maino

I think my voice sounds like butter.

Oh, yes,

John Maino

you know what I mean?

And then I love that for you.

I love that other

John Maino

don't

hear it.

It's lying Wow, I know we got time.

I'm playing this for you John.

Mm-hmm to sir with love

I

John Maino

just want her

to okay, okay, but how

John Maino

do I tell someone who is taking me from crayons to perfume

Here's my

view, okay?

Did he turn off the music or was that John?

I just can't tell.

Ashley's over here.

She's digging a huge smile on her face like

a

teacher would be.

Jim's over here is squinting and wincing at the whole thing.

Like the bullet of the class.

Exactly.

My job is to encourage you to do what you love.

I know.

We need more of you in the

studio.

Can you

hear every morning, please?

Oh, thank you.

And that's really when you are...

performing or singing.

If you don't have that.

Fun factor, it's no good like you got to sell it Yeah, yeah when you're into it Other people feed off of that you can tell and that's what makes it good.

John Maino

You know one reason though I I struggle a little bit sometimes with certain tunes There's time.

Oh, it's called tones.

It might just be out of your vocal range.

Yeah, but you know

John Maino

what the nuns I had nuns So mean I mean they're like incredible.

You always hear those tourists, but I had the really old nuns with the big old habits Okay,

my dad had a piano teacher was a nun.

She whacked him with a ruler

John Maino

terrible

The one the one she gave me a D in music told my my mom I was terrible I should never open my mouth and for every class I washed the blackboards Well, the other kids were singing and I was like I was quietly tears my eyes

Washing

the blackboard

I think we've talked so much about religion today.

I think

John Maino

The Pope.

We're

bringing the Pope.

We're bringing the Pope to Green Bay.

Great.

He can come sing with us.

I'm sure he's

going to do Mass at Lambeau Field and you can help

lead one of the choirs.

Oh yeah.

Let's do it.

We're trying to

come up with

John Maino

slogans.

Yeah.

We'll get you

guys.

You have nothing?

You have nothing?

I'm like, I'm sure you could come up with a couple things.

I

John Maino

think the Bishop already called us to tell us to knock it off.

Ashley, can you stick around or do you got

to go?

No, I'm here.

You got me.

Yeah, thanks.

John Maino

Stick around, please.

Coming up tomorrow morning on Mino and the Mayor.

Mark Houston's in from Implify by Bellin Health.

Talking a little bit of sports medicine.

Katie Compton's in from the Malvis Center for the Arts.

Update us on that.

Got live music in the Daddy D live music series.

And also T.J.

Bolts in tomorrow morning.

Talking Rastlin.

That's tomorrow morning with Mino and the Mayor six till nine on WGBW and WISS.

Kathryn Lake

You're listening to Civic Media.

Find the latest news, information, and archives of all your favorite shows on the Civic Media website,

civicmedia.us.

John Maino

We're gonna have some Pope Leo chat pretty soon.

That's what Ashley was.

Ashley, I'm gonna pronounce your last name.

You

don't even have to, just don't even try.

That's just, oh hey, good job.

John Maino

Pretty close.

Yeah, that's how I go with.

If you're doing the Polish version, it's Klekewicz.

John Maino

Klekewicz,

I like that.

I

John Maino

like that

a lot.

Yeah, that's pretty cool.

But

John Maino

Midwest Music Connection, love your energy, love your passion, love what you do for so many kids, because you know, that's one of those...

fun kind of classes if you're good at it.

It's not so much fun if you're not good at it.

And I could see you being a really good teacher.

It's high energy, right?

It's high energy, and you have to go in with zero expectations.

See

what's beautiful about Ashley is she makes every kid feel like they're good

at

it.

That's what I

John Maino

mean.

She wouldn't

be like a

John Maino

nun.

No, thank you.

In front of mine, who is a priest, great piano player.

He was a kid, and then it nuns said to him in his hands, because she goes,

Your hands are too big.

You'll never be a piano

player.

Like, shut him down right away, and he is a

really good piano player.

But, you know, I mean, come

on.

As a kid, that does damage to a person.

Yeah,

you'll never be a good piano

player.

Right.

Trust

John Maino

me, you're preaching

to the choir

John Maino

So what

John Maino

is your you're kind of like I always hear this term.

I don't really know what they are, but what is your mission statement?

to speak with Midwest Music and Ash, because you got day jobs, too.

Oh, yes, we do.

We do.

So it's to bring people together for the joy of singing and the joy of making music.

Right.

The mission statement is why we exist.

The vision statement is where we're going.

And

you talked a little bit about where

you're going.

You want to

get this thing rolled out

to the rest of the state.

That would be so cool.

That's very cool.

Because every city you go to is going to have a different.

Every time we do this thing, it looks different.

It's never the same twice.

Tell me about that.

I just

John Maino

want to say one thing about passion with people like that.

Jim's daughter is a big time doctor in New York City.

I asked her what day she was here.

If you had your choice, would you still be a big time doctor in New York City?

Or would you be performing at the Weidner and sing?

She goes, are you kidding me in a heartbeat?

She wants to perform.

Yeah.

There's a theater like you.

It's into their blood.

She reminds me a little bit.

Oh, OK.

Gotcha.

She's just

high energy, 30 years old, which I got.

I'll be 40, so.

OK.

Well,

just

West

Side Story.

Sure.

But all this growing up in theater,

music,

violin, and.

you know, when your kid sits down, dad, I don't know if I want to go into, you know, music theater or medicine.

As a dad, it's like, let's

try the medicine.

That's a rough one.

Yep.

And a lot of times you, the culture is so, if you're not tip of the top good, you can't make it on just dad.

She did go to

Interlochen, which kind of is like, that's where the best of the, and

she kind of got Michigan,

right?

Yeah.

And they got kind of knocked down a little bit.

It's like, you're not, you're the lead.

in your high school, we go there and you're in the chorus.

But what I wanna say is that, and I don't know what she's gonna end up doing, but like you, you are passionate and you're gonna stay probably in your career.

I

just hope she's really, really happy.

Oh, right, right.

And that's hard because you can have your job, but then you have to have something else to give you that.

Joy, because your job will suck the humanist right out of you,

right?

Right,

I'm sure she's happy helping people.

But

my point is that theater can really, really, really get in your blood.

Right, right.

And for us, because we aren't professionals, right, we don't do this as a paid job, our idea was create what you want.

To be in like so we're like we want to sing we want to sing with other people Let's make this happen, and we just there it is

John Maino

That's awesome.

I think what you're doing is is awesome, and I get a feeling you guys are gonna get as big as you

want to get.

Oh, thank you.

Because

what

John Maino

you're doing is you're providing what they all say in business, provide a service they can't

get anywhere else.

Right.

And that's what you're doing.

It's very unique.

Yeah.

So, and it takes both of our talents to make it work.

Right.

Because Jen is that outreach person that brings in the people.

I'm the behind the scenes.

I make the graphics.

I make the videos.

I do all the computer

stuff.

So, yeah, like, like, you're not

John Maino

a bad promoter.

Right.

Thank

you.

So, you're providing a need for where there's a want, but for us in the hood, we just say you're scratching.

and it's

great

because people do want to sing.

People want to sing, people want to meet other people that

are

like minded.

Yep.

That's great.

John Maino

I'm proud

of what you're doing.

We're so excited.

Tell

John Maino

everybody where and when

one more kind of place.

So it's this Saturday and we're going to be at the compound in Green Bay.

That's off of Main Street.

Right by the art garage.

Right.

It's really connected to the art garage and there's coffee there too.

Sifini coffee.

Nice little coffee shop.

It is.

It's so cute there and they're so nice.

and so helpful.

It starts at 11 a.m.

and it goes to 2 p.m.

So it's three hours.

We're gonna perform our two songs and just have some social time and it's just, it's so cool.

And everybody's

John Maino

gonna have the same passion.

They'd like make

music.

Yes, yes.

And Jen and I, we get so jacked up on this, we can't sleep for a couple of weeks after just because we're so buzzing after that.

Imagine that.

Yeah, I know, I know.

So we're in

John Maino

it.

Well, look into some doggy downers.

We are going to get you back here because you are fun.

You're

interesting.

And I think Dennis Peters from the Glam Band is going to he's very

passionate about you.

That would be cool.

Those guys are fantastic.

And he's

John Maino

as good a guy as he is a musician and a performer.

That's cool.

Yeah.

The local music scene here is just phenomenal.

Like you don't have to go anywhere.

It's all there's a lot right here.

And you're right about that.

And the more we get people on here, the more it's like, wow, you're from here.

You

know what I

mean?

They're that good.

Right.

Right.

And it's, and we've had people on from the mile of music and just all these other things that are going on.

And Oshkosh does a great job with music.

So yeah, thanks for doing this.

I mean, this is, and you're, you talk about the youth, you know, I think sometimes we're, well, no, but you teach, I gotta say that sometimes I think we're, we're overshadowed a little bit with emphasis on sports, whereas you're bringing in the arts to

that.

And

I think to do both, I think is really

healthy.

Right.

And again, I didn't

John Maino

mention

something.

Oh, go ahead.

John Maino

I was actor of the year at Masabi State Junior College.

Nine kids in his class.

I played George of Mice and Men.

George of the Jungle.

John Maino

And I was in Huck Finn.

That's a big deal.
