Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

Here are your hosts John Minow and Jim

John Maino

Smith Happy Tuesday to ya good-looking Tuesday out there awesome today.

Yes.

Yes.

I thought it was good.

You know what yesterday though, um I Went to one part of town and it rained a bunch and the other part of town not a drop That was like the weirdest thing.

Yeah And it was actually right up here almost heading towards your area where it was all wet and then everywhere else bone dry

So something must have just swept through.

Told you about my night.

Yeah, you had a bad

John Maino

night.

Not something that you want to talk about too much about getting sick.

But it's funny, you got sick and I was cooking, so it's a good thing we didn't call each other.

But

John Maino

I'm just doing this as a public service,

you know.

Yeah, I don't love that.

So I

John Maino

try to help people health-wise.

It's pretty much the, it's really out of PSA because I think everybody knows what you're gonna say.

I mean,

John Maino

maybe not.

Don't eat spoiled Greek yogurt.

Breaking news, okay.

John Maino

John, everybody knows that.

You should have done

John Maino

that.

But you can't tell the difference because it always tastes weird.

So I was eating and it's like, I taste kind of sour.

Does it always taste this sour?

Some of us look at the date, but anyway, go ahead.

I

John Maino

couldn't find my glasses.

Okay.

And, uh, wow, does that get you?

When you wouldn't think so, because basically yogurt is a bacterial type of thing.

It's made up of spores.

And, um, you know, normally that's, it's called gut health.

Yeah, that's sports.

And so what

John Maino

happened?

You ate it and you didn't stop.

It tasted didn't taste good.

And you thought, well, that's yogurt.

So you kept eating it.

I put some, um, you know, my favorite fruit fruit in the world is this to me, cantaloupe.

All right.

Isn't cantaloupe one of the great tasting fruits of all time?

Yeah, that's

John Maino

good.

Yes.

Yeah.

John Maino

Pain in the butt to clean.

Huh?

It is.

It's work.

That's why we miss our moms.

John Maino

But that's all.

Do you ever see if you buy one of those little containers these days, like $9 for where they're cut up?

I've never seen it cut up.

Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah, no plastic containers.

Oh, yeah.

For the lazy man.

Yeah.

John Maino

Hmm.

No, it's a rich lazy man.

Not just the lazy man, not for poor lazy man like myself.

Yeah.

Okay.

No.

John Maino

Yeah.

So I thought maybe that would kill the taste and everything would be okay.

That just gives me a stomach.

He's just thinking about it.

John Maino

I know.

Don't do it, people.

Tell you that right now.

Don't do it.

No.

So hope I'm saving somebody today.

All right.

by doing that.

So happy Tuesday to you.

Todd on vacation.

Hope he's having a great time.

Hope he's sleeping in.

Hope he comes back refreshed.

I think he needed that vacation.

He needed.

He was a little stressed.

Right.

We're talking.

And even one of my radio listeners just said, I think Todd needs vacation.

I'm like, you know what?

Yeah.

He's just got a little.

He's been working.

Well, he works all the time.

All the time.

All the time.

All the time.

This is nothing.

It is.

This

John Maino

job is this is just.

at the

table for the rest

John Maino

of his day.

Right.

Oh man, and he does despite leaving

John Maino

at 430, getting up at 330 and driving 430.

Yeah.

The side hustles.

Yeah.

And just then, you know, we don't deal with corporate.

He's looking for ghosts.

Right.

But no, you and I don't deal with corporate, right?

We're an island.

And when they invite us to stuff, we're like, I'm too busy.

He handles all that for us.

So he's got that pressure too.

But.

Well,

John Maino

okay, but.

It's corporate.

I

John Maino

know I but Remember the time we were sitting at the corporate table and they got up and left us.

Yes.

It's

all right.

They

John Maino

so I'm not so sure they want to hang with us That's okay though.

I mean I at

John Maino

our age and just

I just don't

I could do care.

I was to make money and be a great company but I going down and what's going on and that Todd can do that.

Yeah, he's perfect.

Yeah, he's good.

Perfect.

He's the guy.

He's the

John Maino

guy.

Today is Apple strudel day.

Got to love the Apple

strudel.

Not today though, right?

Andy day.

No, no, really.

And then it's 90 out or 80.

I can take.

John Maino

Cherry tart day.

I hate it.

I hate cherry.

I hate cherry.

Anything cherry I don't like.

Is that crazy?

Except for like mericino cherries.

I just don't like cherries.

Do you know when your kids didn't go cherry-

John Maino

Yeah, we had these beautiful cherry trees in our yard.

Oh.

And me and my buddy, we were probably seven, eight years old.

His grandma said, hey, pick them enough cherries and we'll bake a pie.

Okay.

Right.

We picked the cherries.

Give them to her.

We're tearing it.

She goes, oh, just so you know, I didn't have enough sugar.

Oh, yeah.

Okay.

There's no sugar.

And we're by-

It's just, and I hope you guys didn't expect me to pit them.

Oh, geez.

Wow.

So they were tart and they had pits in them.

Yeah, I can see why you had an inversion.

Yeah.

No.

John Maino

Yeah.

Wow.

John Maino

Isn't that something?

Yeah.

Yeah.

No, I like cherry picking is always, yeah, but you need sugar in those tart cherries.

Absolutely.

You run out.

There was

John Maino

no sugar and they were full of pits.

Yeah.

How did I I can visualize that sitting there like you can't believe is that funny when you're seven years old?

Do you visualize that

like nothing things?

Yeah, there are some things that come back.

John Maino

Yeah.

Oh today's bunker hill day.

All right.

Um Crocodile day Have you seen some of those things in Florida with some of those crocodiles?

How big they are?

Oh, yeah, they're that one.

It was like 21 feet or something and it was like in a neighborhood, right?

Yeah,

I don't know I

And they just I had in the walk.

So they're like like almost like a little monster.

What did you

John Maino

see?

Oh my god,

you want to

John Maino

talk about a terrible way to go that that couple was vacationing in Florida and they were kayaking And it was only like four feet of water and there was this big like 18 footer under the water and he overturned their canoe or overturned their kayak and ate the woman in front of the

guy.

John Maino

Yeah,

can you

Uh-huh.

Oh my god.

Uh-huh Wow, how about the guy in Africa who was like a like kind of a philanthropist for wildlife And he was in like a you have the pickup truck and he had those like campers on the back Above above that.

Yeah, those are cool.

Yeah, and then but on top of that he had like a Like a like a police.

You sleep outside, right?

So guys to a new 60

A lot of times they have to go to the bathroom.

Remember they used to sound old.

It's a young guy.

It's a young fella.

He's

John Maino

a

young man.

He's a kid.

The hell is he doing out there alone?

Did you guys see that?

He was in Africa on a safari and had a great experience, but he had to go to the bathroom.

So he went, just y'all climbed down.

You know, whatever, two, three in the morning,

you know, whatever time they

get.

And there was a lion in wait, waiting for him.

No.

He ate him.

No.

I think about his wife was up there.

So it's just the opposite, right?

That guy saw his wife get killed by an alligator.

This guy, he's the, and he couldn't just whiz off the top of the thing.

Right.

I mean, right.

I do that now here.

Right.

I just, I don't know what he was.

Wow.

Unreal.

So yeah, then they,

And that line was like, um, I don't know, like it was hungry.

So it kind of was like waiting.

It was, it wasn't just, you know, it wasn't happenstance.

Smell them or something.

Just waiting for the chance.

Waiting for him for a couple of hours.

Unbelievable.

I know why he didn't go off the top.

I don't want to wake up his wife for one, but wow.

John Maino

Wow, wow, wow, wow.

Anyway,

where do

John Maino

these have her go down first to just check

things out?

Well, sure.

We'll see.

Everything's fine.

That's what I would, yeah.

John Maino

Right.

Why don't you just run down there?

Here's a

John Maino

flashlight.

I think everything's fine.

I think I left

John Maino

my keys

down there.

Could you

John Maino

go try to find them?

I can't find my glasses and check it out.

Why didn't he just have like a jar up there?

Why didn't he do

John Maino

that?

Anything.

Wow.

Anyway, I know.

And he was like a nice guy to the wildlife, so I don't know.

John Maino

Well, that's they're the ones that because they know you're an easy mark.

They sense that stuff.

You know, they do.

You know, it's

John Maino

just like that guy, the grizzly bear guy.

Remember that guy?

The bears have accepted me as part of their family.

I live

John Maino

amongst them as one in harmony with nature.

Steve's remains

were

John Maino

found along the trail.

This gorilla people, that happens to that one lady in New York.

Let me show that orangutan.

Yeah.

Interface.

Yep.

He, yeah.

But my alligator, my nice alligator story though, I told you this before, but was when, this is, I don't know, three, four years ago, that guy was walking his dog and that alligator came out of that pond and took him.

I remember that.

Yeah.

And then I just,

Like, I was all freaked out about that.

So I chased that story down, called the Reporters and Dallas, and then I ended up sending some money for your dog for repairs.

I talked to his wife and she's like, no, I can't tell you how much.

How many people have called?

Because people, you know, they like dogs and they don't know that we don't like dogs.

And then you'll

John Maino

have just as many people saying, that poor alligator,

he was just doing what,

John Maino

you know, Mother Nature

told him to do.

The guy went in there and just opened the jaws and took the dog out.

Anyway, but they had a...

Know some conservation or some society should just send the money there.

So anyway, it was yeah Those stories can be that's a terrible way to go.

It doesn't happen right away

John Maino

as bad of a way because they drowned you first I think oh the alligators do the crocodiles they drown you they pull you down They flip you over or something

imagine that that that two minutes or how long it takes

John Maino

not good Not good.

It's not good.

I used to watch.

What was it swamp hunters or those guys are?

Did go after I didn't think it was a very cool thing though where they would they would put out those hunks of chicken And then the Crocs would you know get hooked and then they're going to just shoot it in the head.

That's not much

No, I saw you ever they shoot him off the side.

Yeah.

Yeah.

No, that's not

John Maino

you know, but Get in there with get in with the elegant do something.

Come on.

But now you see what they're doing.

They're going after those pythons Yeah, I wouldn't that

yeah, I in those are

John Maino

her

I love that one guy with the real Cajun accent.

Woo dear boy look at that big boy.

Woo look at that John don't that boy.

I want to hold him

John Maino

down.

I know.

Yeah.

No teeth.

His brother's the same thing and his dad.

John Maino

Absolutely.

Love

those guys.

I hope those guys are getting paid.

But those pythons are amazing.

And that's a problem.

It's

John Maino

taking over the Everglades.

Right.

And it's killing like a lot of good stuff.

Those things will eat any, those things will eat a pig.

It's mind-boggling.

Do you?

Okay.

So if you get one, are there's edible?

John Maino

I don't

know.

I don't know what you'd like to do with them.

I mean, that's a good question.

I don't know.

I don't know.

I wouldn't eat it if it was on a menu.

I just know snakes,

John Maino

but you said you had some right.

Did you rattlesnake or something one time that you told me that

those are my boots.

John Maino

Oh, I thought you ate rattlesnake one time.

You know what?

I did.

I thought so.

I did.

I had rattlesnake like

John Maino

colorado or

yeah, I had rattlesnake was on the main I tried it and it was not like tastes like chicken, but it was yeah It was it was like cubes.

Okay.

It wasn't like a steak or any right cubes, right?

Yeah.

Yeah, I did.

Well, I just remember that I did have that once

I

don't It doesn't didn't do anything for me.

I just did it to do

John Maino

it just to say a rattlesnake.

Yep.

Yeah, I agree Happy oh actually, you know what it's also Recycling workers week ways to recycling workers week.

What does that

John Maino

mean?

You know the people that

Pick up your recycling all those things.

That job would have been

John Maino

so much more fun about 20 years ago.

Why?

John Maino

Well, because now it's so automated.

But back in those days, you could go through people's stuff.

Oh, yeah, that

John Maino

way.

Oh, my God.

I had a buddy who did that.

In fact, I bet he's listening.

He used to give me so much cool stuff.

Yeah, that is true.

Because right now they don't even see it.

John Maino

You're not even allowed to, you know, you're allowed

to take

John Maino

it.

Yeah.

And people

John Maino

I still

I

John Maino

still check out stuff.

I

John Maino

wrote do you

what you

John Maino

mean?

Oh

on the curb.

John Maino

Yeah.

No, like I I will knock in the door though Like if I see something like I'm a curb.

It's just it's free game

I

John Maino

know but just to be

you know, it's

John Maino

nice like there was a lady had an army trunk out

And I went knock to the door.

I said, Hey, are you throwing these?

Oh, yeah.

I said, can I give you something for own?

I said, well, how about just even $10?

Oh, well, that's nice.

You know, just to be courteous that you're not just.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Yeah.

That's cool.

Yeah.

Oh, I picked up some cool furniture.

There's a, that is a, um, a thing.

There's people.

It's the same truck.

He drives around and I don't know what they do with it though, because you, you gotta have like a, you have to have a warehouse.

You can't take that stuff home.

I always did.

John Maino

I just stored it in my garage.

I couldn't park in the garage.

You gotta make sacrifice

someplace.

Understanding life.

John Maino

Wow.

Hey, we got a full lineup for you folks.

We are here in a beautiful 69, 69, 67 degree morning.

Partly cloudy, some scattered showers high in the 80s.

Beautiful day in

summertime.

WGPW 98.3 96.5 FM WISS in Appleton and us gosh, of course the civic media app So you mentioning today also some birthdays today Venus Williams 45 Aaron and Diane Murphy Tabitha 61 Wow, the little girl from Bewitched.

Yeah Wow Great can air 62 he was so great in in fact Then you were there

the night of the big banquet for the Medal of Honor Convention.

Oh,

John Maino

yeah.

Back at,

uh, Oh,

John Maino

yeah.

Was that on it?

And, um, I sat with him.

And I said, what did you think?

Cause he won't use the Medal of Honor recipient, obviously he, and if you saw the movie, we were soldiers once it was called, we were soldiers once.

Um, he was the helicopter.

Snake was his call sign.

He was the helicopter pilot, the guy that.

I was sitting with and Greg Keneer played him and he said phenomenal.

He said just he just thought he was just great.

He said he's he's a lot cooler than I was and a lot more whatever whatever but he was really, really happy with Greg

Keneers.

John Maino

He just he said he had it all down.

Studied him and yeah.

John Maino

Wow.

Yeah.

That's cool.

That was kind of cool.

So I was been a big fan of Greg Keneer after that.

Joe Piscopo 74 whatever happened to Joe Piscopo.

I don't remember how popular he was.

Then he wrote it out.

He just he got big into Royds.

Just like bizarre into steroids.

And then he got fired or whatever from Saturday Night Live and just kind of disappeared.

Right.

Yeah.

Barry Manilow, 82.

Happy birthday, Barry.

Many more.

And Newt.

Newt Gindrich,

82.

Both those guys are 82.

I don't know that they've met each other.

Wow, two different people.

Yeah, you gotta play you know you gotta

John Maino

play today.

What's that?

John Maino

At the Copa Copa Cabana or the spot north of Havana Yeah,

I know that song but I know it from friends cuz they played it

John Maino

Yeah, well, you know what?

You're gonna play it right

now

John Maino

today.

Okay.

Yes.

All right, guys.

Techs here from Sarah.

She says, hey, Jim, will you be at the city concert tomorrow night?

I am volunteering for it.

Oh, yes, I will.

I have some friends coming over.

Yes, we will be there, Sarah.

Absolutely.

Sarah, I live right there, so you can stop over.

Popcorn, lemonade.

I'm gonna, I don't know what I'm gonna make tomorrow, but yeah, I always, I'm on my front porch every city band concert.

Yeah, I will be there.

John Maino

There you go, sir.

Stop over.

You do.

You have an open invite.

You can park in my driveway, too, if you want.

Is this his

John Maino

bathroom?

Yeah.

Yeah.

Whatever you need, sir.

Tell

John Maino

all

your friends.

I got to stop there.

But yes, absolutely.

I don't know what the theme is tomorrow.

I have that.

Who's playing?

The city band.

John Maino

Oh, OK.

And they play every Wednesday for the next nine Wednesdays.

All right.

Every Wednesday, seven o'clock.

And it's different themes.

They may do a Star Wars theme.

Obviously, in the Fourth of July, they do the whole patriotic.

But they do old show tunes.

They'll do a country Western and they're good that bad they get paid, but they're very good.

They Yeah, we enjoyed that for 15 20 years.

John Maino

That's cool.

Yeah, and we that band shoulder was donated by him.

Oh I forgot his name.

He kind of made it big in Hollywood actor Tony Shalub.

Nope.

It was everybody says that it wasn't it wasn't Tony Shalub, but it was what other actors came out of here

but he they obviously knew each other uh both went to east and um and i met him he's he's dead uh but i met him i don't know whatever he donated that probably i don't know as long as charlton hesson no no that's too rivers guy um all right i'll have to find that during the break but anyway he donated that band shell which two reasons i like that one it looks cool but secondly

it solidified the band playing at that part because you know people would rotate.

You got me

John Maino

now, now I'm really stumped.

What are their

actors from Green Bay?

It was a, you probably wouldn't, it was a soap.

Ah, soap.

Okay.

But his name is Plex on there.

Was there

when

he dedicated it?

Okay, we gotta find out who this is.

All right, anyway, that.

I would know that

John Maino

Nick says hot dog bar at the marriage house tonight

at Nick.

Yeah, that is

John Maino

everybody's welcome to stop over

No, what no the the reason why I'm having that so the Big Mouth is playing at St.

James Park tonight at seven o'clock and that is they

John Maino

said the city band was playing

that's tomorrow.

Oh tonight

So we have a neighborhood association.

There's many of those in Green Bay, and you do certain events, and people have back-to-school picnics.

They have rummage sales.

So you guys

John Maino

have back-to-back concerts in that park?

Yeah.

That's pretty cool.

So tonight is Big Mouth.

That is... The city band concerts are extremely popular.

Four or five hundred people.

I don't know how many people are going to come tonight, but this is put on by the Neighborhood Association by Aster Neighborhood.

It's Big Mouth.

Yeah, I think they were there last year too.

That's huge.

They're great, and they're fun.

You're having all of

John Maino

them over your house afterwards?

Wow, cool.

When I talk to them, I'm like, do you guys want to come over?

You know, I'm hot dog bar and spotted cow.

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

And Don is like, were they coming over before or after?

They're probably going to come over after.

Yeah, I would think.

Very few performers eat before they put on a show.

John Maino

I remember I tried bringing.

Actually, it's kind of ironic.

Last summer, I went to Cheese Curtain next place.

had one of those big hot dogs.

He has those really

good

John Maino

hot dogs.

I

know he

John Maino

does.

I can't compete with him.

So I don't want any criticism from him.

But I brought

John Maino

some cheese curds, fried cheese curds over to Dennis from the glam band.

They

were

John Maino

playing at the Sardine can.

And to a man, none of them wanted any.

They were still setting up for that, but

no, we don't need anything for a show.

But did you eat before you talked?

I never did.

John Maino

Oh, as often as possible, as much as possible.

It never bothered me.

Never, ever, ever, ever,

ever,

John Maino

ever, ever.

Last year.

Especially when it's those small town.

I had to speak at the ladies American Legion auxiliary in a little town right by Wild Rose I can't remember what it was and every single thing was homemade by

these

John Maino

ladies one of the ladies there was a hundred years old and she had made one of the and it was just

they can just tell right yeah

John Maino

I love those small town banquet foods

but I

Just eat after like we had talk of the town played last year and then they came over after that was fun I mean those guys are awesome, but yeah, I whenever they want to come over I told them look you guys you're you're welcome, but yeah, it's just it's simple I'm not having as big like Christmas party thing is just simple hot dogs.

I made baked beans They tasted great made them last night and you know just so party

John Maino

at your

house with big most

John Maino

and all their friends All right,

I'll tell you

John Maino

come back all down to the actual address

Thank you very much Conrad.

Of course.

Very nice of you to do that.

Birthday boy.

Yeah.

Is it your birthday?

No, no.

It's

very manly.

How

John Maino

you hitting them these days, Convoy?

I'm hitting them pretty nice actually right now, yeah.

So what do

John Maino

you shoot?

I mean typically between a hundred and one ten, but.

Okay, that's good.

I did get a 96.

Nice.

Nice, that's good.

On my birthday, actually.

Very nice.

Yeah,

John Maino

last week.

Very cool.

Courses are in great shape this year, I heard,

huh?

Oh, it's beautiful out there right now.

Yeah.

Where do you play?

I play all over Green Bay.

Yeah.

The one place I go to a lot though, because it's not as expensive, because it's only nine, but the woods.

John Maino

Yeah.

Oh, yeah.

The

John Maino

woods is great.

The woods have always been great.

Yeah.

Good place to get through around quick.

Yes.

Type of thing.

And

John Maino

yeah.

Oh, that's great.

You know, it's got a lot.

I mean, Hillie Haven was always popular.

You know, kind of little places.

Yeah.

In Luxembourg, they have a decent course, too.

That's a

John Maino

Northbrook.

Yeah.

John Maino

Well, that's more than decent.

That's a great course.

That's right.

Kids took lessons, but I want to go back to the woods because they weren't, you know, they're kids, right?

And, but we would like to golf on Sundays.

So we would go and we would just sign up for the last tee time because I don't want them to get in six holes.

But you know what?

That's the best way to do it.

They needed to just get comfortable because I don't want anybody yelling at them.

But the woods is great.

And that wasn't that expensive.

No, that was a

while

ago

to have me there.

I mean, it's I think it's like 20 bucks for around there.

There's a lot of little courses

John Maino

around here that you can get a good deal on.

Yeah.

Well, Scott.

Yeah.

Oh,

John Maino

love that

place.

Yeah.

John Maino

Absolutely.

Yeah.

John Maino

A lot of great places around here.

We had a tournament Friday.

I was there last week at the one on 41.

That's mid valley.

Yeah, 27

holes and they're gonna add nine more.

Do you hear that?

I didn't know they're

gonna add more.

Wow.

That's like I said who took me out That's that's a huge course and that is some they must be making money because boy, that's prime land to develop.

John Maino

Oh my god Well, I'm surprised that you got two courses so close to each other there with which is Irish waters

No, I was

John Maino

caught that it's not it.

I know what you're talking about.

I just can't think of the

John Maino

nuclear plant looking type things there.

Oh on the left

Yeah.

Okay.

Yeah.

Um, yes.

No, what is it?

Somebody hope not Irish waters.

It's, um, yeah.

You know, another fun little course though.

Crystal Springs in Seymour.

Oh yeah.

I went there for the first time, uh, that's a fun course two weeks ago.

Yeah.

And we were on the second hole and it started down.

John Maino

Oh,

yeah.

So I got a free round there.

Oh, I love

John Maino

that place.

I've done a million tournaments out there for different types of things.

Yeah, but I'll tell you what, golf in the state of Wisconsin, people don't realize how big it is, how popular it is.

Yeah.

I mean, you know, you think of the Arizona's and the California's

and the Florida's and the whatever.

It's

John Maino

crazy up here.

It really is.

There aren't many golf courses closing down.

And I was, there was something just on TV about, um,

Women's golf.

Yeah, do you know that it's incredible how that's grown?

I

John Maino

mean having the women's open this

year,

John Maino

I mean 34 Wisconsin has become a golf mecca 34%

of the golfers are women Yeah, and it was 15 like not that long ago 2000 so it's that's cool.

I mean, I think that's great and they had some lady on there who I

If you followed women's golf you would know her but some super famous lady well

John Maino

think about it though years and years ago like when we're in high school Okay, I didn't know a single girl like off.

No,

John Maino

I mean and if there was it's because her dad was a member of the country club or whatever and You know she worked there and that's right But there were no other little courses to just kind of like

learn on did any moms go

John Maino

none.

I didn't know of a single one Didn't know of a single one.

Yep

Yep.

Got this one from Sparky.

He says, personally, I prefer bowling over golf.

So I have never lost a bowling ball.

Yeah, I told you that story.

It doesn't matter how much money a guy has.

Oh,

that's

John Maino

if you find a lost ball, I told you that a friend of mine who's got more money, he could burn his money and he'd still have more than us.

OK.

Oh, yeah.

John Maino

And I found we're golfing.

I found one.

I go, didn't find mine by phone.

Let me have that.

I lost one the last call.

Okay, I had 18 million dollars in his check, but he wanted every golf

probably wise guys 18 million

John Maino

St.

Patrick's.

Thank you.

That's it.

That's that's a long hard course

It is

John Maino

that one is a law and you want to talk about losing golf balls?

You are gonna lose a lot of golf balls that course

You were I think is a tough courses that Green Bay Country Club.

Oh god.

Yeah.

John Maino

Oh, that'll worry out.

Yeah, that's I That's not a great golf.

John Maino

I'm

not a good golfer

And

John Maino

you have the worst part about that courses What people can sit on the in the bar and watch you tee off and watch you as you come up on your 18th wall And they're all sitting there.

Yeah,

John Maino

she's so in watching you finish up.

Yeah, but what a great Well, actually, you know, it was a real big gym when it started was misshikot.

We're else.

Oh, hey, that no that real thing.

No

I've golfed there a billion times and they have three courses.

They got 27

John Maino

Because there was that kind of links course, you know, I didn't think what there was that's 27 holes there.

Are they red white and blue?

That's

John Maino

But I said, you know with the long grass was like a Scotland type thing.

Yeah, you know who did a thing there one time was Bob Hope He was there for

I don't know what I think I think I remember that.

It's my dad was out.

Yeah,

John Maino

but 86 87,

okay

Was that late?

I thought it was a little early.

Okay, well, 85.

What, what did that error?

John Maino

Really?

Yeah.

And I still remember because it was like we're ever press conference for him.

Okay.

And what's the name of that course?

Why can't I think of it?

Misha got the, uh, okay.

Whatever.

So they're having the press conference and there's people bring him in.

He's like an hour late.

Okay.

And he said, well, he had some friend visit or something.

So he gets up there, okay, and you know they he had like an emcee and it meant so

Bob, you know

John Maino

how about to and you played with oh, let me tell you so that he started taking some questions so I asked you know a question and It was huh, what who what?

Look at a record.

He was off script.

Oh, oh he was on those cam guys

John Maino

So then I I did that you know the quest and they repeated to him and then boom he became Bob Hope

You know what I mean?

Yeah, but they say I was seeing it.

I was reading a thing.

What was he doing in Fox Hills?

Yeah,

of course, Fox Hills, that.

What was

John Maino

he doing there?

Was it for Shopco?

Did Shopco used to have their big thing there?

I don't think they had it there.

They had big golf outing, but

I don't

John Maino

think

it was.

I know it was Bob

John Maino

Hope at Fox Hills.

Wow.

Yes, I know that.

I just wonder why he went.

I think Fox Hills was, I'm not Fox Hills, Shopco.

Didn't they?

I think they were at a night or one thing.

I don't know.

Maybe it wasn't Shopco.

Wow,

John Maino

maybe Bob Hope I Know he was

definitely there Bob Hope was yeah, it was

John Maino

there But but then I was reading a thing with Johnny Carson hated having Bob Hope on his show because everything had to be scripted oh Had to be 100% scripted and I guess just funny I could see it there where he had the character Bob Hope versus us You know 80 something year old guy.

Yeah, I mean he still played golf that day We followed him around for a while and everything.

Yeah, and

That that's you know, it's funny you tell you whatever so my cameraman I remember he started laughing because he's getting the shot of Bob It's a great effing day That was kind of funny

Well, I got this one from Brian says I'm such a bad golfer.

I lost a ball at UWG B went back the next year.

It's such a consistently bad shot.

I found the exact same ball next to each other.

No one else had hit one near it.

That was a fun little course out

there.

That close.

Yeah.

Yeah.

John Maino

Yeah.

But I mean,

John Maino

that'd be fun to have on a golf course.

You know, when you're going to school and you got a golf course on your campus.

No, really?

You think we need a golf course?

I know you got a

John Maino

golf team.

And there's so many other golf courses and they, that was, they were making money there.

John Maino

I know, but that's a nice little perk when you're going to school there.

Isn't it?

You don't think so?

I don't.

Why would?

Yes, it's a great perk.

I don't know that a necessary perk.

I think that's what it came down to.

It wasn't, what'd they do with all that land?

I have no idea.

They developed that?

Bye.

That's not about golf courses.

They, they're in some pretty good, and that's gotta be a real decision.

Do we stay golfing or do we, you know, cause you're only, what?

Five months maybe hey, you know what

John Maino

I've never seen

you know that I like to see some

John Maino

time Curly Lambos cabin.

You ever seen Curly Lambos cabin.

Yes.

Well, what do they do with that?

Is that for sale?

I'd like to buy that move there.

No, no, no, I Thought I don't know.

I'm gonna get over my skis here.

I thought they were gonna try to sell it but I don't think you could I don't think it stayed there for some reason that's GB's property, right?

Yeah, did they move it?

I don't know and there was

They used it for some retreats, but I mean, that's nothing.

But the curly lambos, the good house is on Irwin.

Is that Irwin?

Where he

John Maino

lived?

Yeah.

Where he was born?

John Maino

Yeah.

I think so.

I mean, that's like, they've done a good job with that house.

Have you been at any parties?

No.

Well, yeah, I've

John Maino

seen it, but I've never been in it.

But his wife, Marguerite, was a good friend of mine.

Oh, I remember talking about that.

John Maino

And she lived, I actually went to pick her up one time.

and she lived in their same house in Allaway over off of Riverside.

And they lived there for forever, pretty much.

And she stayed there then forever, even after Curly hooked up with that Starlet and brought

her back.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Did she?

Stay loyal.

Was she did she support him?

John Maino

She was great.

She was fine.

She was just a classy lady Okay, never had her but you know one of those ladies worked for Prangies her whole life that or something and just had a great just super super like I told her we're gonna go for lunch it was me her and Lindy and Fonte's wife Stephanie and we thought that was gonna be really cool the first Packer coach wife and the current Packer coach wife

you know, separated by like 60 years.

And she was, I want to say she was 92, if I'm not mistaken.

And I said, what time do you want us to pick you up, Marguerite?

She was, what, what, what for?

And I'm thinking, oh boy, she doesn't remember.

I said, well, you know, for the lunch, she says, well, young man, I know that, but why do you need to pick me up?

I said, well, how are you getting the shows?

Young man, I've been driving since 1927.

I think I know how to get to the Union Hotel.

Like, okay, Marguerite.

And it was I was like so great and I still got the card good that she sent to my mom You know she sent my mom a nice little card had lunch with your son, you know Wow,

yeah

John Maino

classy classy people.

Yeah, that's cool I still say anybody that sends a thank-you note a thank-you card and you will always be remembered

somebody will always

John Maino

Remember that that

means a lot it does and it is they tell you to do it

and people don't do it.

I mean, they just like, look, if you really want to make an impact on someone, anything from selling cars to a real estate, just being a good classy person.

But yeah, those are that thing of the past.

It's really true.

John Maino

And you know what, an email doesn't do it.

Yeah, I mean nothing better than nothing.

John Maino

But

no, yeah, release.

And yeah, I remember just making those kids sit down and write out your graduation.

Oh, yeah.

Thank you for the gift of money.

You're not leaving

John Maino

this

table yet for my education.

Exactly.

You know, but that's important.

It's important.

John Maino

Yeah.

Tina says Irish waters is my favorite course of all time.

It's the only course I ever hit par on a whole.

And I'm 57 years old.

L. O. L.

Nothing

better than making par.

John Maino

Oh man, you feel like

it's

John Maino

like

I can play this game.

Yeah, I get that.

Yeah.

Yeah, that is a that is a that's cool feeling.

Hey, I gotta tell you something.

John Maino

I kind of enjoyed that pickleball the other day in Oshkosh.

You're good.

I don't know about good, but

one of you you were volume you that's what with with the pro was I don't know.

20 oh once I chased Peter out of there jeez Louise I Give me somebody I get give me that I could play was I called the Paris the guy.

I know I was a very nice event So Peter's out there.

He's kind of playing it our sales guy.

Yeah, good guy.

Just you know try hard.

He tried hard didn't play a lot tennis in his life and

I think it was the first time I picked up a rack and not a racquetball.

Yeah, pick a ball court and John's playing and John's.

Hey, get me somebody else.

John Maino

Somebody else.

Go ahead.

Go go go.

But

John Maino

that that guy that you played was really good.

That is such a nice place.

Pickles and bags.

Yeah.

And I

John Maino

tell you, if you're looking for a corporate office, family reunion, VIP room bar, just a beautiful

bar.

John Maino

Yeah.

It'd be a great bar in itself.

Right.

You gotta check that place out, Roshka.

Congress Street, right?

Was it Congress Street?

Oregon, right?

No, no, no, you're on

John Maino

Oregon.

It's Congress.

Okay.

Really great

place.

John Maino

All right, quick break back up.

You're

Kathryn Lake

listening to Civic Media.

Find the latest news, information, and archives of all your favorite shows on the Civic Media website, civicmedia.us.

John Maino

I remember those songs where it's like, it brings you back exactly, you know, when it was.

This is the first day I started my new job in my first TV job in Twin Falls, Idaho.

And remember I was riding to work and I couldn't find the TV station.

And remember this song was on.

So it would have been November of 1979.

Wow.

Do you

ever have

John Maino

that with songs

where it's like, you know,

John Maino

it brings it back like it

was last Tuesday.

Yeah, I, yes.

One song that when it plays, George Winston.

I was in Seattle driving back to the airport and that song was on and just every time I hear that, I remember

that drive like yesterday,

exactly where I was going.

Conrad,

what's yours?

You know, I mean, just the song I just played, it's in grownups.

Oh, the movie grownups.

Yeah.

And every time I hear that song, I think of that movie when I first saw it.

John Maino

I will say this, songs in movies.

Do more for that song, man.

They say

that gives them

John Maino

a whole new real life, rebirth

in that.

More than, more than music.

I mean, there could be a product.

Yeah.

Movies that, you know, I always wanted that when I was mayor, because they were filming movies.

Song track to

John Maino

your

life.

No, no, no, no, no.

When they got, when it got more competitive, everything was moving out of Hollywood, they were going to Atlanta, they were going to Michigan and they did that.

Arizona.

Well, they did that thing here in Oshkosh.

Yeah.

Um, but boy, if you can get a scene.

where the bench, they kissed on or something, that can become a tourist attraction.

I mean, we have a great tourist attraction now at the Packers and a couple other things, but I always think that would be really cool and people would go there just to see that, like in fame, that all that stuff.

Like in Home Alone?

Right, right.

That one was big time, they say with that.

There's a couple

John Maino

other ones like that,

Archie

John Maino

Bunker's thing.

Yeah.

If you can land one of those things, you can leverage that.

So anyway, we just never.

John Maino

So, okay, why is, you know, okay, so I just saw a thing on Facebook about the movie, it's like a streaming movie or something that they shot at the Union Hotel.

And I believe you can, yeah, yeah, does anybody know now where that is, how you find it?

It's a historical piece.

And it was shot at the Union with local actors.

Does anybody know where that can be streamed?

I want to start, I want to watch that.

But it's all shot at the Union.

At least I think it was all shot at the Union.

You call Mayor Boyd?

John Maino

Yeah.

Yeah.

DePierre owns that, or even his family does.

Yeah.

That didn't really get in the paper.

I don't see anything.

When's the last time you read the paper?

This morning.

Oh.

I still get the paper.

I'm one of those old guys.

That's

John Maino

right.

You

still get the physical paper.

I do.

That's cool.

I mean.

I do.

But so do my neighbors.

So it's like we're all bunch old.

No,

John Maino

that's all right.

But that's cool.

Our dad's got it.

So we're going to get it, you know,

John Maino

I still, you know what?

It's so funny when I find old newspapers.

I've got boxes of old stuff that I never throw away from whatever, whatever.

But it's fine.

You know, you think about this every day.

Those people walked into the building down here at the press, Gazette or the Post Crest or whatever and turned out this humongous volume of information, humongous.

Yeah.

John Maino

But you do like.

Reading the newspaper you love it, but you read it online cuz like that

John Maino

I just don't enjoy that as much I do let when you bring in the paper here.

Yeah,

John Maino

I love reading that me too I really are something about it.

Yeah,

and you can't you know sometimes it's really it's There's nothing there, but I don't know it's still something you know what I mean like I do

John Maino

But even like when we get the press times yeah,

I

John Maino

love that

I

John Maino

love having that physical paper, right?

Sometimes

sitting in front of me.

Ten minutes.

John Maino

Sundays.

But really, where do you even buy a paper anymore?

I mean, when I worked at the B.A.Y.

building, they had all the boxes right out front there on the side.

Do they have newsstands like that anymore?

No, like Webster Market.

Yeah, groceries.

You can go there and buy them.

What do you

John Maino

mean?

I mean, bosses in Depeer, I guess you could go there.

Well, you could go all the way there.

Well, that's what I mean.

They don't have those stands anymore.

I don't

John Maino

think so.

Oh.

Yeah,

John Maino

I don't know

a

John Maino

quarter and take like three Like if you know there's an article about you there be honest.

I'm on the front

John Maino

No, oh, come

on.

I would when I was on the front page which it happened I would go and I would go down to the press because that I would buy them.

Okay.

That's true Okay, no, no, I don't think

John Maino

that's no everybody's done that.

I don't think those quick pull convoy quick pull

If you were, but that's, that's a pretty

limited.

If you knew there

John Maino

was going to be something about you in the paper, it was good.

Would you put a coin

John Maino

and take three?

I mean, I don't think I, probably be on the, on the, on the internet, you know?

No, no, no, no, no,

forget it.

I'll go

back in time.

No, no, this is before, come on.

Geez, get away with it.

Listen, listen.

I mean, yeah, I'd probably take a couple to give it to my, to my family.

Thank you, thank

you.

Feed it a couple more quarters though.

No, you just put in one quarter and steal to take

it from me.

That's built in If it opens on one quarter, you know, I guess that is true It doesn't open on

one quarter that is true and they don't there's they're all there.

John Maino

Yeah,

they're all there for the taken

John Maino

I mean you talk about trusting

people, you know an honor

John Maino

system,

but who wants to read more than one paper,

John Maino

right?

Right, that's true that would be cheaper than going behind it.

Yeah

John Maino

Hmm.

Everybody's done that.

Trust me on this.

Get over your uncally, ultra boy days or whatever.

I know you did that.

Everybody's done it.

Yeah.

How about Ariel?

Who's so great?

Isn't it great having Ariel on?

He is so good.

You're right about

he could go somewhere else, but I told you yesterday before he came in, I just think he likes it here.

He's a coachy soccer, doesn't he?

And these kids are in school.

I don't know.

He's not going to know.

I mean, he probably 20 years he'll leave, but not the next.

Brian says, I would take 10

John Maino

papers and sell them.

There's the entrepreneur.

John Maino

Ever a paper boy?

No, my brother was.

No, I never was either.

Yeah, I never was.

John Maino

I always had practice or something after after

school.

He

John Maino

had

the morning.

John Maino

Oh, I would never get up early.

Yeah.

No, he had the morning

John Maino

one.

Yeah.

Yeah, he did.

John Maino

I got this I've been getting the press because that for 35 years or I went to renew the paper Gannett raised my rate from $15 to $45 a month.

Yeah, I terribly missed the paper,

but I'm not paying that yeah, you know what I don't know I don't know when you did that but I've done that but I I just go crawling back I do I just but if you take a break then you can go as a new subscriber But I think it's gonna be a month and then it's like oh you get the the $10 a month deal.

It's like okay instead of 45 but

I've cancelled.

John Maino

Oh

my god.

Kathryn Lake

All right, we're gonna start a great break.
