Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.
And
here are your hosts, John Mino
and Jim Schmidt.
Trouble?
Yeah, was he right behind you going into Chernobyl?
No.
How did he get burned?
Did he get burned?
Whatever
he was.
There's
a lot of them up there.
Like yesterday, it was so nice.
I guarantee you, there's people walking around today.
It's like, whoa.
That was a warm sun.
First time.
That was a warm sun.
And it was beautiful.
Yeah, it was.
It was wonderful.
I just embraced it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That was a beautiful,
that was a
perfect day yesterday.
I know Brittany is on vacation, but did you?
We can only enjoy this till Friday.
You see that?
The weekend?
60.
Anyway, we'll enjoy it.
How does it look for memorial?
I've got two big events coming up on Memorial Day weekend.
I know it's long range, but I'm gonna have to... Oh, I know what I had to add.
Okay.
Did you see this?
This new thing with AI?
We were talking about AI yesterday.
Okay.
And which I think is kind of fun in a certain way.
It's almost like scary, but kind of funner.
So I don't you know, it's like wow
It's like a wow thing.
It's unbelievable.
You can put in these are the emotions I want in this it there's a Public offering coming out, you know, you might want to invest a couple bucks in that because I just think it's gonna
but have you seen this new thing I just
Last night for I went to bed.
I always check like ESPN.
Just I gotta get a world report on ESPN.
What's going on?
Giannis, we just had that report.
I Don't blame him though, man.
You know
what this franchise I'm they want a championship They want an NBA championship and they haven't done anything right since
right though.
I think that's commendable though for More important than money than it's he wants to win.
He wants
the
championship.
I think that's cool.
I agree
And the Bucks haven't done a single thing lately.
Well, they got Lillier that didn't, Dame Lillier, but obviously with the blood clot and then the injury, he might never put, he'll never put it this way.
He'll never be the same player he was.
But he just walked.
It's just, it happens.
But then Achilles, I mean, look at me.
You think I'm the same athlete I was before I got that bone spur on my Achilles?
Nope.
Could have been a contender.
But he,
Money's not it.
See like Aaron Rodgers is part of the team, right?
He owns it.
Yeah, so That's but they're gonna bark up the wrong tree.
That's not what he wants
No, and he's he's at that point now in his career.
It's always so young.
He's so young now He's in the meat now.
He's in the you know, yeah, I mean there's God bless the LeBron's in the world But not everybody plays to there as old as LeBron
right now.
I
What a devastation if he leaves.
Oh, man.
He's the only thing we really can clasp on to.
And such a
good guy.
Oh, man.
Oh, man.
Yeah.
Such a good guy.
So what's the answer if you want to keep him?
Well, first of all, I mean, everything is in retrospect, so it's so easy to be in sports and go back where,
oh,
they made it the musty.
But I couldn't believe they fired their coach.
I know he got fired by Phoenix again this year, but they won a championship.
They weren't just, oh, we made it to the second round of the play.
They won the NBA championship.
And then they, a year later, they fire up and they do this and that and this and that.
And it's like, ah.
I would agree, even though they have come back and not have a good season, this guy can win a championship.
And that's what you want in a coach, right?
Absolutely.
So whatever
he did, man, he pushed
all the
right buttons.
Yeah, I'm worried about that too.
That's
because if they lose, Yanis, forget about it.
It's
well that.
Yeah.
Yeah, close up shop
shop because Milwaukee's not one of those destinations where it's like they say Where's they reading about if LeBron goes somewhere else now?
And it's like there's only been one person that ever voluntarily ever left the Los Angeles Lakers and that was Shaq because whatever nobody leaves the Lakers on their own Okay, so what I'm saying is Milwaukee isn't the Lakers where right, you know, there's an old There's an old joke among sportscasters or news
But cover the NBA and it was what's the most difficult thing for a player for a married player in the NBA?
What's the most difficult thing
for a married?
Yeah
To not have a smile on your grin on your face as you kiss your wife goodbye on your way to a West Coast road trip to Los Angeles That was the big thing in the NBA everybody wanted to go to Los Angeles.
Yeah
And it was one of those things.
And so then it's one of those things with the bucks.
God bless Milwaukee.
But, you know, if you got a choice between Los Angeles or, you know, Miami or even New York and Boston and all these places, it's tough in that free agent market.
And the bucks struck gold with drafting, honest, you know, they found this kid and, but they just haven't been able to build enough around him.
And I know there's been injuries, but every team gets injuries, but
is what it is.
Okay.
So
anyway.
So anyway, let me throw this out there.
AI.
Yes.
Don't know why.
Have I been living under a rock?
Yes.
I don't.
Okay.
Yeah.
But actually though, okay.
Can I just say one thing about living under a
rock?
Yeah.
I watch these videos all the time about living out in these like caves out in the woods where they have these cool, they hook it up cool.
I would love to do that.
Have you seen those time?
I have.
Yeah.
Aren't
those awesome?
It's like semi-survivalist, but they make these like underground places really cool.
Yeah
No,
no my only concern with that.
You know my only concern with that
was bugs snakes.
No, no mold mildew Dampness health
um, there's been a lot of cowboy movies where okay, you got to get somebody out of a cabin type thing
Cabins if this is underground Lee says
this is underground, but there's no
way it's the same thing Just work with me on this so they'd have these sod kind of places up in the west at times They didn't have these okay, and you know how you know the Indians and Native Americans would smoke them out They'd go on top and cover over their thing with with animal skin.
Oh, yeah the chimney.
Oh So you're afraid somebody's gonna cover your chimney.
Yes.
I Just don't know why somebody would do that
If I live in there and
they're trying to get me out
Somebody's coming after what if it just gets covered by natural things
well, then you go up you clean it out But now if you go out and clean it out what happens boom I Just gotta think about these things Jim.
Yeah, you gotta think about
John living above ground.
That's just gotta think about So anyway this other AI thing
yeah,
where you take a picture an old picture and they bring it to life.
Yeah,
have you seen that?
Yeah, is this brand new?
No, I've actually done it with like pictures of my mom and dad and stuff like that You're kidding.
I didn't know this existed.
It's definitely getting better because when it first came out, I don't know four or five years ago, you know
It kinda looked like them, but it also looked like a scary version of them.
Okay, I was gonna say, is it a little freaky?
It's a little freaky.
That's what I was wondering as well.
Like maybe their eyes are just a little off or something.
Yeah, okay.
But when you say bring it into life, what do you mean?
You can take a picture and it starts moving.
And it's like they're smiling
at
you and stuff?
Yep, and turning their head and all that stuff.
I'm not up on that.
Yeah.
I thought it was just the enhancement you were talking about.
No.
No, they turn old pictures into life.
It'd be like your parents or your grandparents or some of a sudden are smiling at you and waving to you.
Wow.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Has anybody done that?
But mom's got six fingers.
I mean, AI still makes some mistakes.
Yeah, I would love to try it though.
There's a lot of stuff you can do with that.
I've got a buddy who does podcasting as his life and he has Casey Kasem and Robert Stack doing all of his voice work because he got audio of them.
Is this a buddy
of yours?
It is a buddy
of
mine.
Then why does he have Casey Kasem instead of you?
Because
you do a better Casey Kasem
than Casey Kasem.
Because he actually has Casey Kasem doing it.
You're better than Casey Kasem.
Robert Stack from Unsolved Mysteries.
And The Untouchables.
Yes.
It's amazingly he's got yet before the election.
He had Biden and Trump talking like friends.
Yeah, it was just hilarious But don't you
look at that sometimes and even news the real stuff wonder if it's real.
Oh, yeah, well nowadays I mean everybody's gonna be skeptical about everything
I thought I was the first person to learn about this AI thing last night
No,
it's been in all
the papers
That's the other thing I've been watching a lot of videos on truckers You can they'll put you're in the cab with them.
They got cameras on the outside You see these guys back up into you know Loading docks and stuff with two inches on either side and they're as cool as a freaking cucumber and I've said they're sweating just thinking about
I do okay once a week or whatever did is I sit right here And I just gazed in fascination when that huge truck pulls up here.
Yeah, I think it's for the creamery maybe or ever
Whatever, you know first play and it's and it
pulls out my sir right
here.
You're right, Jim
They pull up right here Yep, and he has to back that thing all the way around through that narrow little thing with the with the garbage things out there and the cars
Usually one try
one try and it's a
one time you had a pull-up, but a younger guy one try
even looks out the window
said it
once and he does
it
Yeah,
that's
that's incredible.
That's cool
That is
cool.
I would take so much stuff out with me.
How do you back it up?
Oh, Lordy,
Lordy, Lordy.
How do you
think I'd be?
Forecast, low to mid 60s for Memorial Day weekend.
No rain at this point.
But you know, it all rains the Memorial Day weekend.
Low to mid 60s.
OK, we'll take that.
Oh,
yeah.
We'll take that.
We'll talk about this weekend of Memorial Day.
Memorial Day.
Because that's
that's long range.
Yeah,
right.
I'm
just saying this weekend though, too I think is gonna be in the 60s, right?
Yeah, that Memorial Day weekend where you have to give a bunch of talks about
I'm gonna be in freedom for I'll tell you what the town of freedom they do such the last time I did it three or four years ago They asked me to meet at the high school for the wagon ride over.
It's like, oh, that sounds like fun Well, what they do is they have these old horse pulled wagons and everything
And they have the high school band.
They have the whole high school band out there.
Okay.
And the thing I remember is they had just come back from like the state softball tournament and drove all the way up from like Madison to do this.
And what they do from the high school, they march all the way through the thing with cadence.
You know, the military cadence with the things.
You can, total silence,
throw the
entire sound
or throw the
entire town.
It's real.
But to hear the live band doing that marching.
Wow.
It's a really cool thing they do at the cemetery and I did something dumb You ever say something this wasn't during my speech, but something right before I went up So I'm talking to the priest who's gonna go up to give the thing And we're just talking from whatever church I said, yeah, he goes are you Catholic?
Yeah, I said I gotta be honest with him.
I'm in the altar boy hall of fame.
Yes
There is one I said oh, yeah, it's in the Vatican.
I
said I go I
go I got my has suck retired what and they could and no father so and so I Wasn't lying so much like I was in confession That's where I lied Got another one here best way to keep you honest sign Halliburton's dad.
They seem to get along well Yeah, you saw that right?
Last week, Hal Burton's dad got in Giannis'
face.
Oh, yeah, yeah, I
did.
I did.
Boy, there are a lot of guys in the NBA who are seven feet tall that would not have handled that as well as Giannis did.
Imagine back in the day, bobbling nearer.
You're not even that taller.
You wouldn't handle it that well.
Yeah, right?
I would
have handled it
well.
Wow.
It'd be blood on the
floor.
Today is Tuesday, May 13th.
Forecast.
Mix of...
Son
of
clouds possible showers high of 70 man.
We could use some rain.
I was
I actually texted a guy Actually a guy we know I'll tell you who Jim we're a mutual friend and we got into it on the internet one time every and then we kind of got Ventures will you do that?
Yeah, and we've become like really good friends over something else fishing.
Okay?
And I want to go out this past weekend and go explore.
Have you seen the fire warnings?
Yeah.
Already.
Already.
Yeah.
In fact, we got a great story coming out in our newsletters today.
So if you haven't signed up for
newsletters.
Does this seem like unbelievably early for that?
It seems to be.
We haven't had enough
warm weather to dry out that much, but they are extreme.
But anyway, what I want to throw out there.
OK.
If I put a picture of like a really old picture of my grandpa or somebody would somebody AI it for me
Amanda could do that for you.
Okay.
Yep.
Oh wow And he's gonna wave to us tomorrow.
Yes, that's cool, right Todd?
Whatever they have them do, you know, I don't know that you can choose the action, but
oh It's gonna be a little freaky.
I'd like to see that me too We got a phenomenal lineup stay with us
Don't tell me I'm always whenever top places saw it coming in.
I know there's a reason look at your screen Top gun day.
I did not know that Todd today's gun day Wow And why is today top gun?
I'm not sure the movie.
I mean did it?
What was it 86?
Yeah, you have Tom Cruise credit.
Oh man when you see and God bless the soul of Al Kilmer You know how he turned out.
I mean obviously without his I know he had some issues whatever but
I saw a thing with all the other people from the original, um, top gun.
Tom Cruise looks great.
Yeah.
I mean, he has aged.
I don't know if he had work, whatever.
God bless him if he did, but boy, he looks good.
He does.
He's a different guy.
Really?
But different.
But that mission, you are some of it.
Yeah, I think he's, I mean,
does all of his own things, right?
He's almost like the exact same weight.
Right.
Wow.
Yeah.
Have you ever seen this movie?
I'll tell you, and I have no idea the name of this movie.
But it's really good with Tom Cruise.
Have you seen that the one where he plays the part?
I think we talked about he plays a part of like a drug smuggler.
That's an awesome movie.
Oh my god
That is a good movie.
It's totally based on fact.
Oh, yeah Well,
yeah, we lived during that time
Well, it was one of the big ones when he was first get started one of the first cartel guys and that was um Who's the big one they just got him a few years ago?
But he was like when he was first starting up his car that
was that
That whole contra thing was
in
there too.
There was a lot of arms in
there.
And what's his name?
Oliver North?
Yeah.
Played a big part of
it.
That was a lot of trade for weapons.
That's
what that was.
The movie was called American Made.
Yes.
Great.
2017.
Movie.
And that gets you right away.
That's
a good movie.
That doesn't
take us like what's going on
here.
That
thing is like boom, that's good movie.
And the thing is.
And he's great in that
too.
He's phenomenal in that.
Oh, and then one of the good parts is when they finally they had they busted them they had the FBI the DA and Homeland Security
on that
all all showed up at the same bust for him They all arrest him
They take it is in Arkansas.
Oh, yeah.
Take him the thing and he's telling the guys goes.
Yeah.
You guys want Cadillac?
Yeah.
I'll buy everyone you guys Cadillac.
It's like, you know, trying to bribe us.
No, I'm just saying as soon as I'm out here, I'm going to be out here in about 10 minutes and you ain't going anywhere.
Son, you ain't going anywhere.
There's like, um, just the attorney general, um, Governor Clinton's on the line.
Yeah.
Hey, Bale, how you doing?
It's getting there.
Don't let him go.
He just walks out.
Yeah.
You got to watch if it's totally factual based.
And it's really, really good.
And the money he, yeah, that's, yeah.
And then when he tries to call his contact with the, with the government, it's like, this call is, and it's like, I don't know who you are.
Completely turned on him.
Great, great Tom Cruise movie.
I got this one from Michael.
I'm laughing my A off, picturing some Native Americans trying to smoke Mino out of his hut.
Well, Michael, maybe that's the reason they don't have a hut.
because I worry about that as well.
And that's a true story.
If people are looking for something to do, the Green Bay City Track Meet is at West High School tonight.
Come see the beautiful new stadium, Brian.
Nice.
Very nice.
Boy, they've put a lot of work into that.
A
lot of stadium, but yeah, West is nice.
Did they ever get that resolve that?
With the
cell phone tower or whatever it was?
Yeah,
blocking a view, obstructed view.
I think they did, right?
That was, I mean, come on.
Don't you look at the architectural drawing and say, gee, I wouldn't.
Okay, but that's me.
I think that's what happened.
Anyway, I think they got that result.
But yeah,
that's best is great.
Yeah.
Yeah, top gun came out in 1986.
Got that one.
Um, actually taught, you know, who did not have that group, you know, who aged maybe the least.
Well, yeah, Val was Val.
Come on.
Well, Val, but yeah, but he was, you know, he had disease or something.
Who's the other one?
Kelly McGillis.
Oh, yeah.
She doesn't look like that.
Wow.
I mean, she was smoking hot back then and she just I think she gave up acting and just I mean not bad, but I mean, what's 30 years ago?
Look at me.
Yeah, that's my point.
No
Get this one pilot who flew for air America that was shot down over Nicaragua was from Marinette.
Really?
He
all over north Brian.
I remember this He was just a normal guy from like Marinette.
Does that think I fell asleep in the plane?
Was that his friend?
Cruise's friend?
Oh, I think he was the guy.
Oh, I think Tom Cruise is portraying the guy from Marinette.
Oh.
Yeah.
Wow.
He didn't look like Tom Cruise from I remember.
No disrespect.
But yes, I remember this now.
That's kind of cool.
Yeah.
Where's Sean?
Sean, where are you to report on us?
Is that guy dead?
I don't know.
I don't know.
But if not, we gotta get him on the show.
Oh, man.
Celebrating his... Shrava, get on this.
Yeah, right.
That's Pete
then.
Top Gun came out today.
1986.
Today's also cocktail day.
You know what I got invited to?
One of those bourbon clubs.
Oh, fun.
It would be.
But I don't know.
It's almost like I don't know enough.
They could do a blind taste test on me.
and grab something that's like six dollars a bottle someplace and say it's, you know, 900 and big.
Oh, wow.
This is awesome.
Then they'd like be, ah, it's not.
It's cheap stuff.
I think they, yeah, those are a lot of samples, though, at those bourbon parties.
I know
they do want you to buy a bottle when you leave.
No, I know, but I don't know enough about it to know which one is.
Oh, this is the most.
Oh, yeah.
You know, like you ever go to a wine tasting and some people really know their wines and it's like, I'd be like, my question is my thirst.
Today's Hummus Day, which gotta be the grossest thing known to man.
So hummus, that's obviously super popular.
Two of my daughters were home one time and we went to the farmer's market and they're healthy.
So they got hummus and asparagus.
And that's what we had.
That was dinner.
That was dinner.
Hummus and asparagus.
I don't think I would do dinner.
I would eat that for a snack.
Yeah, but they just, you know, they need a lot.
It's basically crushed up peas or something, isn't it?
Chickpeas.
Chickpeas.
Yep.
Yeah.
So, I mean, all
right.
No, that was like their meal.
I'm like, okay.
Until I got ordered the pizza showed up.
No,
that was Gallagher's.
Apple pie day.
Pretty much can't go wrong with good apple pie.
No.
Crouton day.
I don't eat croutons.
I don't eat
croutons.
That's good because that's well carbs.
Was that pilot Eugene Haasenfuss?
Yes.
I remember that name.
Wow.
I remember that name.
Back
at this.
From local stories to local voices, we're shining a spotlight on what matters right here in northeast Wisconsin.
It's more than just talk.
It's about connecting with the community.
This is Mino and the Mayor.
Now here's John Mino and Jim
Schmidt.
Wonderful morning out there right now, 54 in Green Bay, 51 in Appleton, 50, excuse me, 61 in Appleton, 57 in Oshkosh, forecast once again a mix of sun and clouds, possible showers high of 70, which is phenomenal.
How high did it get yesterday?
80s, right?
Or 80?
I think it did.
Right
about 80,
yeah, 80, yeah.
Wow, perfect, perfect day.
Once again today is Top Gun Day, Cocktail Day, Hummus Day, Apple Pie Day, Crouton Day,
cough drop day is okay going back to the crouton type things is there anything more gross than we've talked with this croutons and soup
I like him so do I we remember we talked about
that we didn't nobody
else does he called this yep chef this professional chef and have an end up to be Murphy Murphy
my friends too for stuff he terrified
political cover yeah but he was just a friend so you I thought you're gonna really call a real chef he's cooked
yeah um
cough drop day, um, was, do you ever, I was to have that one kid in class that always had a cold and I always had halls, cough drops.
And there are no flavored halls, cough drops.
They're just that one house, cough drop.
Right.
You can smell that.
You walk into the room, two things, two things that y'all was never wanted in school.
You never had to have to have the halls, cough drop.
And you never had to want to have Vicks Vicks.
And then if you played football and you had some kind of a strain,
Whatever heat type stuff, they're different names are like Ben gay type stuff.
Right.
And the coach would make you wear that and you'd be that one kid in class that just smelled.
Remember that?
Oh, yeah.
I was not that kid.
But yes, I knew that kid.
Right.
But even in wrestling, you never had to put on the Anagelesic or whatever it's called.
Yeah, I think a lot of
people did.
I'm just saying
that.
I'm
talking about the classroom when you walked into the classroom and it
was pretty tough to act cool next to that hot girl in class when you smell like Ben gay.
True.
True.
Or VIXX.
Or VIXX.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
Um, bike to work week.
Yes.
How many days in are you now?
Um, what is today?
Oh, it's Tuesday already.
Yeah.
Um, this week's flying.
Thursday and Friday.
Okay.
Are you going
to?
Thursday and Friday.
I
can't.
Um, yes, I am.
I'm biking Thursday and Friday.
I, I, I just, I gotta run over there after this.
I don't have time to go bike today.
So,
Thursday and
Friday.
I have to, Thursday and Friday I'll bike.
Are you, or you don't, you just walk here.
Okay.
Thursday and Friday, I'll take my
bike.
I'm bringing my bike out though this week, but it's nice.
So I'm going to get that dessert.
I bet I could just go to the broke spoke and get a seat.
Do you think?
Yeah.
Cause I literally can't ride it anymore.
Cause I think it's causing an issue with my
George is awesome, but you, of course you got, there's cheaper bike seats.
I'm just telling
you, but I need a good gel one.
I go
see what him, he's got the best stuff.
I mean, I think it's affecting, I think it's affecting me in a way where it could, I might never have kids
again.
I was just going to ask you that.
Yeah, that's happened because of your, um, it's a matter of Todd, Todd, a smirk.
Well, yeah, I'm sure that's the one reason.
Morning visuals you never want to
have for
100 Alex.
Right.
Only a hundred.
Yeah, it's way down on a level.
Martin Wallin is 32.
Um, Darry, well, I'll tell you what, that guy, I like his singing, but I'll tell you what, man, he should be in jail.
I mean, he was about five feet away from killing a cop.
When he threw that chair, like 10 stories off that building, down in Nashville.
I mean, two cops were like standing there just a few feet away.
Yeah.
When you're famous, you get away with
it.
I guess, man.
Uh, Darius Rucker is 59.
You know, I really like the music he does now.
Oh yeah.
Oh,
yeah,
absolutely.
I mean, Hoody was great, but then he, he got a little more something, upbeat country or something.
He's
country now.
Man, he's, I like him.
Although, you know, who cannot stomach him?
I told this to David Burns, David Burns.
He was in town, I think for a Packer game or for something.
And, um, he ran into him in a bar, I think at Maloney's.
Remember the old Maloney's?
And he has talked to you because, Hey, man, wouldn't it be cool to have you here sing the national anthem for a Packer game?
He's like, um,
Are you serious?
You think I actually sing national anthems?
Ah, no.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, yesterday, remember you were trying to help me think of the Teddy Swims?
It was, it was Teddy
Swims.
It was Teddy Swims.
Okay.
And we said Billy Strings.
Teddy Swims.
I did.
I did.
I got home.
I'm thinking, okay, daughter of me and Alexa played Teddy Swims.
I listened to that last night when I wrote my, and it was stuff.
Yes.
That's what it was.
What's your favorite song from Teddy Swims?
Oh, I like, I gotta tell you, I, I like him.
If he would come to Green Bay, I,
We'd go.
I don't know what you guys are talking about.
Today's swimsuit is a, um, don't you think he's pretty popular?
I would say so.
Probably he's a popular artist and yesterday where you're talking about, I don't
even
remember.
Yeah.
How did we get on that?
We were talking yesterday and I'm like, Oh, that's guy.
I really like his music.
We're talking about different genres of music.
That's what
it was.
And I said, I like this guy and you know, Billy, Billy Sims and it's like Richard Simmons.
Oh, I remember you mentioned Billy Sims.
Yeah.
Oklahoma running
back.
Anyway, Teddy Swims is the guy that I like.
Close.
It was
a Monday.
Well, he has a heck of a running back, too.
Yeah.
Teddy was.
Yeah.
Stephen Colbert is 61.
Dennis Rodman is 64.
He's been quiet over the years, although his daughter is a phenomenal soccer player.
She's on the United States Women's Olympic Soccer team
or
national soccer team, rather.
Stevie Wonder, 75.
Always liked Stevie Wonder.
Yeah.
Always liked Stevie Wonder.
Didn't he have one of the greatest voices of all time?
Or maybe still does I think so.
I just like his music me to
my share Yeah Lovely as a summer's day
you watch cool bear.
I Don't step that late.
Yeah me to be honest with
you
when I see him I like him, but I just don't stay up that late
Do us really I like you like him.
Ah, he's you know not
We don't vote for the same people, but, um, yeah, I think he's funny.
I think he's got great writers and that was cool.
That whole COVID through COVID, you know, when he just hit home, his hair's long and his haircut and his wife was in it.
And yeah, I think he, yeah, I think he's a smart guy.
He's a smart dude.
He's a smart guy.
Oh
yeah.
Can you believe he's been doing that show for 10 years this month?
I remember when he started.
I didn't think that is this is, well, he used to do that show.
Right.
Right.
The Colbert Report.
Yeah, but then before that wasn't his sidekick.
He was on The Daily Show.
The Daily Show.
Yeah, that's right.
That's what he did.
But he took over for Letterman 10 years ago this month.
Wow.
Wow.
Wow.
Hey, you know, that whole thing, it's amazing.
I was seeing a thing.
You know who's not looking good?
Jay Leno.
Yeah.
Right.
Ooh.
Wow.
And I have to feel for him.
His wife.
His wife with Alzheimer's.
He just looks worn out and old and tired.
I agree.
I just, yeah, he does.
And, but he was talking, he was on some show and they were talking about Jimmy Kimmel.
Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, I guess just humiliated him on his own show.
He
said he wished he wouldn't have gone on there.
Yeah.
I enjoyed that.
Well, because he came out and basically on the Tonight Show gave Jay Leno crap for pushing Conan O'Brien out of the Tonight Show, basically saying, oh, you know, you kind of made the guy lose his job and all that kind of stuff.
So I was like, that's what happened.
Yeah, those late night wars were a serious thing that haven't like subsided.
Like those are still deep seated guys hate other guys because of those things.
But that when he got rid of corn and they in the paper, you know, those sketches of things.
It was he always did that jaywalking.
You
know,
the jaywalking and coins all just mangled under his legs, you know, because he he did.
He just.
Yeah, that was they amended that.
No,
no, no.
OK.
No,
I think Letterman and Leno have mended a little bit
a little bit a little bit I'd say no Johnny Carson and Leno never did
right.
Yeah, they like never yeah, nothing ever because he felt pushed out by Leno exactly.
Yeah,
exactly.
Yeah, he
Yeah,
Boston, I don't know
and then I remember Leno's I still remember this plane his day Leno did one of those things where it happens so often in sports so often in sports somebody retires and then it's like
No, well, my team really wants me back and it's no they don't but you just miss it so much and I remember Leno when he had given up and he comes back I'm
just doing this for all the people that work for me.
I'm afraid they got a job and I just didn't think I'm just I'm not doing it for me.
I know they're giving me 300,000 million dollars a year, but I'm not doing it for me I'm just doing
it for my people that work for me.
I know they'd be homeless It's like ball.
You're doing it all for yourself
And I don't know why Mike Tyson was speaking.
Neither.
I just, but.
That's
yeah.
Anyway, that's not bad though.
That's close.
I was like, it's close.
It's close.
But it's like, yeah, you're right.
It's close.
It's Mike Tyson doing Jay Leno.
So remember this, Jim, whenever we need a Mike Tyson,
just
tell him to do his Jay.
Yeah.
Yeah, good point.
Good point.
Good point.
Dave says love croutons and soup in salad.
Not so much.
I just don't like soggy.
breaded food and we got another free ticket Friday come up this week right time we do
coming up on Friday your chance to win tickets to go see the brew crew will get more details on that later this week
nice got texts here the current late night guys all actually hang out together yep all right what's that second generation of guys who like took over for other guys yeah but the original guys seem to still have a bone to pick or whatever yeah
they're not as good the people who come on after
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Even the people, like, I like Jimmy Fallon just fine, but it's not the Tonight Show
anymore.
He doesn't do it for me, Jimmy
Fallon.
No.
He doesn't
do it for me.
I like
Colbert, but I don't watch him.
And Jimmy Kimmel, I like.
But again, I
was
fed by then.
Wasn't there some study on how accurate it was?
But a lot of people are getting their news from that segment.
And Colbert's
one of the smarter guys, I think.
I agree.
And his monologues are, you know, seven, eight, nine minutes.
And so that's what I liked about him.
I don't agree with a lot of stuff he says, but he, he, he doesn't make it up.
It's true stuff.
He just gives an opinion on it.
So yeah, I, I, I like Colbert.
He makes you think.
I mean, he's kind of not, not just the cheap joke type thing.
Next
time I go visit the kids, I'm going to go to, you know, it's a big tonight show with Stephen Colbert.
It's right there.
So I think I want to go to that.
I think it'd be fun to check that out.
How do your
tickets?
I would love to go, if I visit my daughter in New York, I would love to go to some kind of a show like that.
I really would.
They're free.
Okay, but do you have to stand in line for like six
hours?
No, I think you just tell them you're coming and then they tell you if their ticket's available.
So my mom's been there a couple of times to go there.
Cause late, or not late, Saturday Night Live is almost impossible, right?
I'm not sure.
I don't know if it is anymore.
I don't
know.
Oh, it's
not?
I don't
know.
I thought it was like a couple of years you put in your name and maybe in a couple of years they might call you?
No.
Boy, I don't know.
I mean, that's all the
same neck of the woods, right?
I mean,
yeah, walk past the studio.
I went to that little deli right next to it.
Yep.
That's where actually that's where First time I ever saw a tongue sandwich.
Oh, yeah,
those are
I thought the guy was joking.
It's like are you serious?
No, that's a nice stack it up pretty high there.
Yeah Saturday night, I don't know how you tickets for that.
I think it's the same thing.
Maybe it's
probably somebody.
I don't know.
I would
If somebody said, hey, I got some tickets to Serenite Life, I would find a flight right now and I would get on it.
Well, I wouldn't find a Newark, but I would fly somewhere and I would go to Serenite Life in a
heartbeat.
Yeah.
I mean, we toured that, you know, you see the studio and all that, but yeah, that'd be fun.
That'd be a good time.
But there's so much to do there, right?
I mean, I told you there's we went and my comedian I liked the clean guy, not Nate.
I'll think about it at the break.
Bill Burr.
The clean guy said
Billy Strings.
Bill Burr is that guy that you probably shouldn't hang out with in high school because he's just he's bad.
But boy, you get a kick out.
Oh, yeah.
But no, you don't want to hang with that.
No, he's he's too funny.
Yeah.
And he just he's gotten in a little bit of trouble because he
I think I told
you that one time he was at the some award.
He was at that award thing in the guy.
So a music award and the guy played like some concerto on the piano and he comes back he was
like that was like the Academy Award not the Academy the
the big
Huge
Grammy
the water the big one.
No, that's the music, but
it wasn't just this little it was like big
one.
Yeah, anybody
else
want to kill
themselves?
Oh, that's terrible.
No, wasn't that terrible?
Yeah, he loves he loves Milwaukee.
You know he talks about walking show so he's he's
a real thing where he roasted Conan the other night.
No
idea
But well, Conan and I are two red heads, so we've, you know, suffered together.
But you know, at least I'm a short red head who gets a raise.
Look at Conan, he looks like a six foot six abrasion.
Got a
center break.
Scott Fencey, Green Bay Press Gazelle will be joining us.
Back after this.
Press because that coming up at 706 red grace hangman salvation army for the salvation army week, which is a very cool thing Yeah, I'm sherry omnic and John Calwars coming on talk about kayak, Wisconsin something near and dear to my heart for this coming summer I got other this
one.
Okay, good
text here.
You mean dropping John Mino's name doesn't get your tickets to SNL
Another one I've got contacts get tickets.
I'll be gray Bay next week.
I will share my intel I'm gonna say who you are
awesome.
We're gonna keep that one secret.
Yes.
I don't
want anybody else holding you
know on your tickets,
right?
So you go um had a good lunch yesterday,
okay?
Yeah, and We did that dog show at the Northland.
Yes, and that was fun.
Yes.
I mean we had a good time and picked out the winners and
the dog biscuit cookies
That's when you ate those but for doing that they gave us a free lunch and I haven't cashed mine in yet.
You went yesterday
poke the bear
Yeah,
and I was looking at the thing and okay, so you get you'd be impressed Sort of a pastrami sandwich They get good pastrami.
It's really good.
I think that's
them Are there any people from the UP listing that remember limpu bread?
It's this homemade type of finish bread.
Okay from Finland
And bakers, certain bakers up there would make it.
And it's like a, it was like a rye type of bread.
And it's like in a weird, like a big round loaf.
And I asked him, I said, where's this bread from?
I said, oh my God, I haven't tasted this since, you know, 20 years ago on the UP, this limbo bread.
I don't even know if they make it anymore.
And that was so good with the pastrami.
But she said, you want fries or chips?
And it's like, I don't eat fries or chips.
Okay.
Since when?
Since my whole new health care.
And anyway, um, she said, well, you could have soup and I said, oh, what do you got for soup?
So we got Booyah or venison chili.
I'm like, what?
Yeah.
I said, venison chili.
I said, I didn't even know that was legal.
She said, well, that's cause it's imported or something.
It was so good.
Yeah.
They have great food there that, um, Nashville hot chicken sandwich.
Okay.
That you want to get.
Well, I'm going to go back because I was reading through their things just like.
But Venice their venison chili was absolutely delicious at poke the bear.
Yeah, I'd
like that place Wow
and breakfast on the walnut room.
They have a great selection.
So yeah, that's nice That's good.
I'm glad you did that.
Who'd you go with or you don't tell me a good
friend Who is a good friend of the program
nice?
Yes.
Yeah, so I didn't know if you want to loan you're that guy You know I feel but
I can see going to poke the bear alone, but not at the bay alone.
I'm
totally fine going places alone until people recognize me or whatever.
Then I feel like they feel sorry for me.
Yep.
I
know.
I always say I'm sitting here with all my friends.
Like when I'm on the road, I used to be on the road for GB or from traveling.
So I love pick up a newspaper at the newsstand there, going into some little, I don't care if it's a Denny's or whatever.
I order my breakfast skillet, and I drink a pot of coffee, and I read the page,
and I
love it.
I love it.
I'm 40.
I'm a
cougar.
But fine dining restaurants really don't like singles, because you're taking up a table for two.
They would much rather have two or four people.
I've always
wondered about this.
They don't like that.
What about in a
diner, when somebody goes there, and they take up a booth, and that's all they do is drink coffee?
Yeah,
right.
Or two people like even like in friends, they never drink coffee.
They just hang out at a place to people if you own that place Do you ever?
I mean they made the effort to walk through your doors, which is phenomenal But do you ever have to like encourage them to spend some money or
I?
I would say, I don't know, I would say something to him.
I know you
would put up a sign.
No loitering that.
Yeah.
But you see that sometimes where they don't even it's like you want some more cup.
No, we're good.
And the clock is kind of free.
Really.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So you could, you know, drink five cups of coffee, read the paper and take up a booth that they could turn over what two or three times.
I mean, I do that
on the road, but I wouldn't do that around here if people recognize me.
So what I'm saying is, um, if you run a little cafe, how do you handle that?
Yeah, I I again, I don't know what they do.
We probably should talk to a cafe owner
People waiting, you know by the door or whatever do you because you hate to put because you have to say if somebody pushed you out Would you ever go back to that restaurant?
No, but you know Do you really need them back?
I know I hear it's a good point Todd you're the voice of reason you are
you are you don't mean I think it's
a it's a fine line, right?
Because some people do want to sit and have that conversation, and that becomes endearing to them, and then they come back, blah, blah, blah.
If they're sitting there for more than half hour, 45 minutes, less
than... We
need the booth.
Yeah, we need the booth.
Especially...
They should
be more... They should understand that.
Well, especially if there's people waiting in the lobby or something, right?
Sunday morning breakfast, and you're just kind of hanging out, sipping coffee, and... Right.
You know what I would do, though?
If I had a... If I ran a cafe...
Okay.
I would make sure I had a big enough, and this would be an optimistic way of looking at it, but I'd make sure I built a big, kind of like waiting room.
There's nothing, and there's a really popular place, and I won't even say the name of it on Military and Green Bay.
Really, really super popular.
But they have, like, here's the door, and then there's the restrooms, and here's the counter, and everybody waiting is kind of uncomfortably standing there,
and you gotta get out of the
way from people going to the bathroom.
They stand outside now.
Yeah, now, but I mean in the winter.
Yeah, it's that's that could be but the only way you can make the lobby bigger is to take out booths and that's where the money is.
I know, but that that's very popular.
I like that place a lot.
So
yeah, you know
what
I mean?
Yeah, but it's great.
It's so popular.
You just there's no room to
stay.
There's a company that I think did pretty well in the draft.
I would have that.
I think they did.
I think I saw something on that, which is very, very cool.
Well, I saw Mike Greenberg there who does, you know, the big tree does get up.
the big national show every morning out of New York.
And then I remember one time Justin Timberlake and Jessica Beale were there.
I would so wish I would have had such a great conversation with them.
I would have told Jessica Beale.
I played my first junior college football game in the town she was born in.
I'm sure she would just automate her day.
I know.
Ely, Minnesota.
We just bought a station up there, by the way.
They were kidding.
Yes, sir.
Send me up there.
Oh, we will.
Yeah, we will.
You probably didn't know that, but we did.
And you
want to know something ironic?
Where I was going to school in Virginia, Minnesota.
You know who was born there then?
No.
The guy from Parks and Rec.
The big guy who's really popular now.
Oh.
All right.
You know who I mean?
I do.
Yeah.
If I met both of them, oh my god.
And just think how they would feel, John.
I know.
Jeez.
There's the real question.
Right.
There's the question.
Unbelievable.
All right, we're going to start a quick break.
Scott Fancy joins us next.
We're
Dedicated to mint, hated to mint, hated to mint, hated to mint.
Coming to Northeast Wisconsin, live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.
And
here are your hosts, John Mino and Jim Schmidt.
Hey, thank you very much.
Welcome back, Mino and the Mayor.
Look at Tuesday morning beautiful forecast 54 in Green Bay right now 5061 in Appleton, excuse me 57 in Oshkosh mix of Sun and clouds today possible showers high of 70 yesterday was Unbelievable as I was running down the trail working out for my getting in shape for my triathlon Scott Vancey blew by me.
I mean it is like blew by me I didn't even know they're allowed to have motorized things on the trail, but he was there Scott.
How are you on your e-bike?
I don't have any
I thought that was you some good-looking dude or something.
Yeah, I get mistaken for that.
Yeah, so
I told you I still think you look like that guy who's in that movie About the wrestler the high school wrestler.
Oh, I can't think and I'll think of it.
Do remember I miss you and I think it's a
younger Clooney, isn't it?
No.
No, I'll think of it.
I'll think
of it.
Never mind.
How you doing, Scott?
I'm doing excellent.
How are you?
A younger
Clooney.
Wow.
You know what, though?
I saw a picture of Clooney the other day.
I don't know if it's
from the movie, but
he, as we all are, but thankfully, but...
Died it, but I don't I hope it's for a movie role because it looks awful
No, that's that's way
like almost like jet black.
That's that good night and good luck.
He's on Broadway right now 800 bucks a ticket and that's what he's doing right now and he I Don't know the reviews on that are pretty good, but there's some people that don't think he's that good, you know, but okay
Yeah, they're selling that.
Do you remember that guy?
Who was the reporter?
Good night and good luck.
Did Marl?
Edward Marl.
Yeah, that's who he plays.
Oh, okay.
This all makes sense now.
And it's very, very, it was on 60 Minutes.
Oh, okay.
How he's making that transition from the big screen to Broadway.
Everybody likes to do Broadway at some point.
They do, and it's just...
They really do.
That's like their goal.
It'd be like, we're just talking about LeBron James.
We're talking about, you know, they want to win a championship.
There's people in the movie thing that really want to get to Broadway.
It's like, why?
Two things.
Well, two things.
There's one more money in it.
It's steady work.
And you wake up every morning knowing what you're going to do that day.
And your agent's not calling you.
Hey, did I get that part?
Do whatever.
They say when you've got that thing and you never know how long it's going to last.
But I was reading all about it.
It's like steady.
Even for those people.
that steady job, not a bad gig.
And as you say, and they're right there.
It's not all the apartments are right there.
They walk back to work and it's, and it's a different crowd.
It's just we go to quite a bit of
theater.
And some of those people, I don't want to say they phone it in, but that's really the same thing where it's like some of these big stars, they will show up like, you know, literally just in time to get on stage and like 10 minutes after the boom, they're off the door.
They're gone.
Now it's got to be an extra.
adrenaline thing to be live to
actually
performing.
There's no second takes.
I, you know,
you're performing live right now.
Yeah.
But
I didn't think about that.
The difference in them, Scott, those people, you Scott, when they, when they walk on thunderous applause, sort of didn't do that.
We could have talked.
We just start talking right away.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We were good.
That would actually increase the pressure a
lot.
Like now.
Have you, I'm going to ask, have you been, have you driven out there?
Cause you don't fly, right?
Correct.
I think that's like really weird.
Yeah, especially for
my profession.
But even if I wasn't just in general, just a lot
of weird stuff.
The time we
live in.
Like, yeah, but now I really wouldn't find a lot of weird stuff going
on.
I wouldn't find a new work right now.
No,
no, no.
I mean, so.
Did you ever take like Amtrak?
I did.
How was that?
I've never done that.
That
was okay.
And sometimes I think, I mean, that's probably even worse than flying, right?
I mean, just.
you know, you can derail and, you know, see, this
is,
I think it's, I
would
love to do Amtrak.
Yeah.
I don't trust other people in vehicles.
Like I feel out of control then.
Now I
know when you're driving, you're not totally, you know,
somebody.
Okay.
I see it.
Cause like when I was crossing the street yesterday, just down here with the one way street, I thought of Larry McCarron's favorite saying from a movie.
I have so little faith in humanity.
I look both ways when I cross a one-way street.
Yeah, and you're kind of that way.
Yeah, and I mean not like even if I'm driving with somebody I have to drive.
I can't be in the past.
You're kind of like that, though, right?
I am.
Are you?
Yeah.
I will tell you that I'm nervous flying only because of I'm not in control.
But the Amtrak thing, if I get a club car, I leave it up to him or whoever driving that train.
I don't get anxious on that.
That's cool.
It makes your sleep
easier.
Yeah, not me.
It's like, all right, are we going off the tracks here?
Where did you go?
Like just from Chicago to like Milwaukee type
of thing.
Oh, okay.
Yeah, this
was when I was in college.
So
I had to be at
home for Thanksgiving.
Going along the West Coast is beautiful.
It's fun.
And it's, I don't know.
I read
that
area through going
on West
Coast.
Northwest, yeah.
Idaho-ish, Wyoming, Montana.
There's no way I would take one like 20 hours.
Zero chance.
Who do we talk to that was driving to Montana today?
Rent a car, drive it, right?
Yeah.
Huh?
Who do we talk to?
Like, yes, they were driving out to Montana.
Kevin Vanessa.
Kevin Vanessa,
yeah.
And it's like, why not take like an Amtrak instead of driving across North
Dakota?
Amtrak's aren't cheap.
I mean, why people think they're expensive, but it depends, I guess.
But it's great having dinner and they're just a fun way to travel.
I mean,
I would do it.
Do you do cruise ships?
No.
Like
the biggest nightmare, okay, I don't want to be trapped in a tube up
Okay, you're three biggest like I don't say but you're three biggest things you want no part of well
say the guy in charge of Yeah, transportation is our guy
like
Sean Duffy.
Yeah
Very, very safe.
And it's statistically, okay.
So you don't like flying cause you're afraid being trapped up in that tube.
Okay.
I will say there's drugs for that,
but
let's go ahead.
All right.
I'm all natural though.
And then the ship, the cruise ship, I can't believe you don't.
And let the record show, I have done trains.
So like I will do that.
That's not an absolute no ships being out in the middle of a huge ocean.
We're like, hey, if I want
to go.
Where else are
they supposed
to be?
I mean, you're trapped.
I don't like feeling trapped.
That's the ultimate freedom.
You look around, there's just beautiful
water.
I'm going to say, I'm going to agree with you on one thing.
The trap.
I had that feeling a little bit at the Packard Draft the first night walking down through the thing.
And it was like a sea of people almost as far as on either side.
and in front and in back.
And it's one of those things if for whatever reason you had some weird panic attack or something.
I don't know how you're going to get out of there in a hurry.
Yep.
And that's the thing.
And I do have anxiety attacks.
So imagine having one on a cruise.
Yeah.
Where do you go?
They're not going to send in a
helicopter too.
They will.
But if you have an anxiety, first of all, there's hospitals, doctors on there.
The
other thing is that before you go on your cruise, you do
do the lifeboat thing but there are eight and those boats aren't like rafts those are really super nice boats and there's enough for everybody so I I would I never thought of that I gotta be honest with you I
went
on really you never
I never thought about you know what there's enough for every that's what they said on the Titanic I was just gonna say we actually counted yeah let me find the guy that counted
like how many people were excited to go on the Titanic and on a nice journey
and how did
that end
up right think about that
I don't want to spoil the movie
nobody's seen that yeah he's
never played a good guy in a movie maybe
that's true think about it yeah
Maybe I'm feeling bad for you.
Thank
you.
He didn't know he was coming in first.
No, I don't
want
this here.
But
life is great, but you've got to get out.
I mean, are you doing that?
Are you happy?
No, I was going to buy a t-shirt the other day that says, I like baseball and about three people.
And it's very
true.
So I
don't.
You're a big Cubs fan, aren't you?
Yes.
This is gonna sound bad, but right when they won the World Series, it was like, hey, I kind of like saw it.
I don't need to see another one.
But I was a diehard.
It's like, oh, you won.
And now our team, our ownership runs it like a business.
And that's tough to get like
your mom.
It really does when you're
like, all right.
And I know it's a business.
You're running it like, but they really make it known, hey.
So, okay.
So which way is the Pope leading?
Because I saw Cubs White Sox fans.
White Sox fans are just because there's a big billboard.
Hey,
we grew up in the South Side.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And he
was at the White Sox.
You know who else
had no the decision was Mayor Daly.
He was a White Sox fan and he just he got up talked about it.
You know, right there.
But he took I went to a game with him and his family and my family and he he is.
100% he's not like well, you know, I can take either one.
Yeah, he's the White Sox
fan.
I
love and they love him down there, too
What do you
mean
the Pope haven't common?
Oh?
I grew up a White Sox fan, too.
Okay, that's me.
Oh, yeah, Mini Manoso.
You want me to go through the lineup?
Yeah,
Mini Manoso Manoso, Louis Apparicio, Nellie Fox, Gary Peters, Joel Horland on the mound They were one and two in ERA in 1966 and the White Sox didn't make it any place not one and two in ERA
Pete Ward was my hero.
Pete Ward was the third baseman of Chicago White-Sex.
Johnny Romano was a catcher, big fan.
I can go on and on.
Jim Landis, the whole thing.
But here's the thing, the coach, the manager, Smokey Burgess was a pitch hitter.
Let me just tell you this though.
So my hero was Pete Ward.
He was my number one baseball player in the world.
Pete Ward.
All right, got it.
Rookie of the Year 1963.
So...
I was working in Tucson.
He was the manager of the Portland Beavers AAA affiliate for I forget who okay?
He was the manager, but he's also a third bachelorette.
It's like I get to meet my all-time baseball hero I'm gonna interview him.
How awesome is that?
Yeah, and I was asking one of the players said hey, have you seen mr. Mr. Ward or who I said mr. I go stinky Yeah, hey stinky Pete Ward my hero.
They said I said what what what do you come and you like never walk as this uniform wash never wash his clothes
I don't even know if he showers.
It's like, this is my hero.
We had like 280 pounds or whatever versus, you know what I mean?
Never meet your heroes.
Never meet your heroes.
Yeah, that's what they said.
Isn't that the truth?
But I met you and it was it.
How did that go?
It lived up to expectation, yeah.
Exactly.
So you were able to, not that you were born, I'm not making an old joke, but you were able to recover from the 1919 White Sox and actually be a fan and go, hey, this is the team on the up and up.
If he ain't cheating, he ain't trying.
Okay.
Okay.
Gotta
make a buck.
That was, it wasn't really cheating though,
right?
No,
that wasn't, we're trying to win.
Show us Joe Jackson was like the leading hitter of the World Series.
It was banned for life.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think, but the Cubs people just got on that because it was so historical.
In, in, you know,
people that
they couldn't name three players.
Most of the.
Fans go there for Wrigley.
Yeah,
right
summer which is why for years and years It's like well, they don't have to try to be competitive because they still saw every game
um What would I don't know if he's still alive, but you know we should call for see if he would verify your opinion Lee Ilya He I
think
he died.
Yeah,
he's Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah,
we can't play it.
Yeah, he went off in a press conference
Unlike
on Cub fans
like the
manager of the Cubs
ripping on Cubs fans for his
team.
Yeah for why basically like anybody who's out here at one o'clock for
a job Not great marketing.
No, it's unbelievable.
Yeah
And I mean, his language, and maybe this was during a press conference that was- Wow.
Although you know what, back then it's not like they were live.
No, they were live.
As much as sports writers probably.
Yeah.
Yeah, it was something though.
So
what, I mean, we're gonna talk sports in just a second.
What do you do for fun?
Um,
watch- We're a not fancy Green Bay Press Gazette.
Right,
who's- What do I do for fun?
I watch Netflix.
What are you watching?
I just got done with the series you It's one of those things where the guy is the the star of the showbiz is serial killer But not like Dexter in a hey, I kill
was cool bad right, right?
And it's very disturbing how many
people you like you number you and I gotta find that
and it's very disturbing how many people are cheering for him
Wow,
you
know, it's the whole classic serial killer who gets those letters
in jail and it's
like
Why do you find this guy?
You know who they say it gets more love letters than anybody does crazy brothers that well besides them is the guy who?
Who killed the banker or killed the insurance guy?
Oh?
Luigi Luigi.
Yeah, it's unbelievable.
That's
that's
so
many things
though, but okay cup just one thing break he looks like you
He dies.
He does.
Back
after this.
Oh you look like
him.
Yeah.
Wow.
Hey, welcome back.
You might know the mayor here.
Good luck on Tuesday morning, 97.9 FM, WGBW 98.3, 96.5 FM, WISS.
And of course, the Civic Media app, you'll have your Milwaukee Brewers at the Cleveland Guardians 435 today on WISS.
Scott Bensie is our very special guest.
We got a whole bunch of text here, but one really stood out here.
Let's ask Scott about the bobblehead skirmish.
Todd not not our Todd Todd from the pure
in first of all for Todd to have that memory This was back in like 2007 when I was on years Unbelievable that he would remember that but there there was a potential chance.
I was gonna get killed I don't say that lightly.
So we're at Wrigley Field Lou Pinnello bobblehead day.
Okay Cubs Reds
So first, 10th, whatever, first.
So I get my bobblehead and I put it under my seat, probably a steal.
Okay, at least you went into the game with the bobblehead.
I remember as a Timber Rattler game, maybe it was the night of the Nikki bobbleheads or something, and everybody in line would get their bobblehead and they wouldn't go into the game.
They would leave right away.
They'd start putting on eBay in the parking
lot
already.
I'm not a bobblehead collector,
so it's not
like a, but anyway, so I.
put it underneath my seat was gonna enjoy the game at some point, maybe, I don't know, third inning.
I look underneath the seat and it's gone.
How is this possible?
Like, I mean, you know, so I look behind me and there's these two questionable fellows just kind of like looking and I'm like, hey, did you take my bobble head?
Because really the chance, it has to be them.
Right, you put it
right
there between
your feet?
It can only be the one person.
And they said, no.
And then I did the whole, hey, let me, let me see your bag.
If it's not in
there,
I'll absolutely apologize.
And then the other guy comes in like, what's up?
He's like, this guy's accusing us of stealing his bobblehead.
No, I'm not showing you my bag.
No, man, this is, then I'm like, oh man, this guy, this
guy, if
he's got a knife, I'm done.
He would not show me, but.
Then weeks later I say this to you on the show and you knew somebody with the cubs and you got me a loop and no a bobblehead.
That's right.
Yeah, that's right.
Yep.
I so forgot that story.
Yep,
Brian Wow and or Todd I'm sorry for your information.
I remember this because I went to high school with Vincy Is it
well, I mean I do know some Todd's but I don't know if
you know everybody's got a nickname on my show So this is Todd from deep here.
Okay.
What?
That you left it at that you didn't call the usher or
call No, I mean we could have had fun and got the you
know right
camera, but I didn't care about bobbleheads
No, but it
was more like like dude it had to be yeah, just like there's no and then the whole you know Yeah, I won't show you and I
yeah, I don't let him take a bag in Yeah,
no, no there was some sort of backpack Wow.
Yep
And actually they will or at least they would at that point.
They just had to check it.
There's his name right there.
Todd's technically right now.
Oh, yeah, absolutely.
I knew two Todd's in high school now.
You know what Todd is a guy kind of like the dude at the game.
You didn't want to mess with he he would
I think, and Todd can- Todd would
have had your
back.
No.
No,
he would not have had your back.
He just said he would have your back.
I don't, if he's- Todd,
would you have had his back, yes or no?
Ask Todd if he considered himself a
guy
who liked to fight.
I don't want to say a bully, but a guy who was willing to like mix it up, or if I'm just thinking that that was his persona, because I was scared of him.
Huh, incorrect.
You were scared of Todd, or you're scared of the two guys at
the Briggs Field?
Todd was one of those and Todd can correct me if I'm wrong.
He would like be one of those guys who would smoke across the street, you know?
That was
legal at East because you just had to cross across the street and at what?
Scary, you know, like yeah, like this guy this guy is tough, man.
I just say some true or false.
The girls used to smoke crosses crosses kind of hot.
What's that kind of hot?
Um, I you know what smoke?
Would you guys go to the field across the street?
I am interested to see how to back up my memories of this, or if he's like, no,
man.
Who are
you with?
What do you mean by?
When they stole your bobblehead.
Just a friend from the Presquezette,
actually.
Oh, okay.
Yep.
Was it Damovsky was it?
No.
Damovsky would not have handled that well.
No, and they didn't take his bobblehead.
Well, because he's crazy.
And by the way,
the
person I was with was a Reds fan.
Why wouldn't he just give me his panel
right?
That's right.
Just man sure those probably yeah,
well he was with the Cubs at that point.
Oh, it was yeah,
but um He might have put on eBay and didn't want to give
it.
Um, I was this is from Todd I was the guy who did like to fight definitely smoked at Joanne's
yep Todd, okay, so I got it mostly so basically You didn't want to mess with Todd.
Yeah,
you know Those are good friends to have yeah
East
sounded like a lot of tough guys.
East was a very,
yeah.
Our guy, Paul Adler, who was here the other day, he was a East guy.
I
had a bully at East my freshman year
to the
point where it totally changed my entire high school career to this point.
Now you'll be like, oh, this is totally Scott.
Now that you know how neurotic I am.
He thought I tripped him.
Okay.
I swear to you, he fell himself, but I was behind him and he looks behind me and I'm like,
I didn't, from that time, would push me, would punch me out at, when we were able to go to lunch, just totally like pummeled me.
For the rest of my freshman year, I went to the library to eat lunch, and I did that the rest of my high school career.
Wow.
Yep.
It wasn't my buddy Rocco, was it?
It wasn't,
in fact, I know who this
guy is still.
It
wasn't Rocco.
It was not Rocco, and he, I was right to be concerned because his rap
sheet.
Was it in your
class?
He was off and on, but his rap sheet is not good as an adult.
I might have acted
on me.
That's too bad.
Let me feel sorry for you.
Let's do that story.
You know what I mean?
Cause you missed a little bit of high school.
My
high school, high school was not good for me.
It
wasn't.
Wow.
Yeah.
Yep.
And it's because of people like Todd.
I'm just kidding.
Actually Todd was good because.
He would like to mix it up, but he wouldn't just randomly pick on people Wow Yeah,
you know, it's true though as far as you never know excited guy in high school is a few years older than me And he's in prison.
He's been in prison for life.
Yeah,
so you just never know at that age
We had a lot of I would be interested have had lost any fights because I mean he was willing to you gotta be willing to lose
We're gonna be back with more high school sports covered by Scott Benz Yeah, yeah, thanks for coming in.
Yeah, you have to have around you have any place you have to go now
Okay, you're gonna stay here all morning.
Okay, Scott Fessy.
Go ahead.

Here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.
Hey, thank you very much.
Welcome back.
Beautiful morning out there.
We got Grace Hageman from the Salvation Army at Salvation Army.
We could, as I mentioned, have brought up a bad memory of Scott Vancey punching me at the Salvation Army at the gym on Mather's
Creek.
Well, hopefully that doesn't happen again.
That is a great gym.
Thank you.
You guys still use that for?
Yes.
Yes, we do.
So we do still have recreation happening on our West Side location.
Nice.
Serve
lunch there every
day.
I don't want people, I did not punch you.
I have no right to actually.
You came close.
And I just can't let that slide.
Let me tell you how
bad of a teammate you were.
Okay.
I was bringing the ball up one time, you tried to steal it.
That's true.
I
didn't try to, I did.
But that's I'm sure is warranted.
Yeah.
Well, um, and
that is bringing up too slow or
something Which you were now and you were and I've always said this you were a very good three-point shooter But all you would do is stand behind the three-point line in the corner There's like no defense.
Go ahead.
Why
are you agreeing with him?
Why are you doing this for us Grace?
And the one on Mather you're talking about.
You guys serve lunch?
We do a daily lunch, Monday through Friday.
And then we also have our food pantry, as well as our case management services.
We share some
guests or residents, because I work at the new community
shelter, and many
times they go to your place for lunch.
That's why
we don't serve lunch, is because you do.
But then you don't on certain days, weekends, holidays.
Yeah, bank holidays.
That's
gotta
be an old school facility, right?
That's the Salvation Army?
Oh yeah, that's
old.
The building is very old.
That has been looked at.
to do other things with it, but you can
stay
the course.
We're hoping in
the future, we're hoping in the future that maybe there's something that can be done with the
property.
Your main focus now is the Crock Center?
Yeah, so I work at the Crock Center, but because of my position in community outreach and engagement and things like that, I cross back and forth a little bit, but typically all of my planning and things are at the Crock Center.
But yeah, I'm here for National Salvation Army Week this week.
Isn't
that nice?
Yeah.
It's
amazing what you guys do.
Thank you.
From housing to meals
that I can talk about when I can.
Yeah, this week is, it's a non-fundraising week.
It's really a week for us to be appreciative of our members, our clients, our programs, our staff.
There's some really great staff at both locations.
With our Crocs Center, we have so many staff that are dedicated just to doing senior classes and senior programs.
And they're wonderful instructors.
We have seniors that come every week just to go to those classes and keeping those people engaged.
It's just such a wonderful thing that we can provide for our community.
Tell me
about those classes.
Are
you talking about academic or
you're talking about exercise?
Exercise, our exercise classes.
Okay, that's cool.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So like we have a...
pretty decent aquatic program.
That's exercise classes.
We could do like AquaZumba.
We have AquaCycle.
We have
special bikes that they put in the pool.
And it's like, well, less pressure on the body.
You put bikes into the pool.
Yeah, there's special bikes.
They're made for the go in the
pool.
Oh, Mark Hewson from Bell and Sports Medicine.
And I always talk about, you know, when I'm prepping for a big event,
athletic or whatever,
whatever, whatever, you know, like, I've got a bone spur in my heel.
So that gets into my...
Did you get that from basketball?
A lot of things.
A lot of things.
But, but!
I always tell them, I get hurt trying to get into shape.
I'm trying to improve my body.
He says, get in the
water.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So our aquatics.
But I can't swim.
Well, but you don't have to.
Because you can walk because we have a winding river that you can just walk.
People walk that a lot.
Do
you have a reverse pool?
What's that?
The water's going the other way.
Swim against it.
No, we don't have that, unfortunately.
But we have a lever lamp pool.
Yeah.
But the water, what's great about the water is it's good on your knees.
Absolutely.
That's
usually where.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean and also our fitness classes are especially our senior classes really focus on that and so it takes up the
bikes in water.
Have you ever
heard of this?
No, I don't
think yeah, it's there's specially made bikes that they can put in the water But so it's like it's not like all the like structural equipments are lighter so they can pick them up and put them in but yeah It's a super popular class with our seniors.
They love it.
I
love that music
It's like a fun experience, but yeah, so we have our our instructors so like they specialize in
doing these senior fitness classes and keeping our senior community really engaged.
So, Natural Salvation Army Week, we're really focusing on highlighting all the great things.
So yesterday, we did some highlights with our volunteers.
We dropped off Kringle at Curative Connections because of the great things that they do in keeping people active in the community.
Today's all about focusing on recreation programs.
We have a summer camp coming up as well as our gymnastics team.
We have an affordable gymnastics program that's full, like,
balance beam and uneven bars.
And yeah, it's crazy.
It's crazy.
My daughter was in that.
Really?
Yeah, she
loved it.
Oh, that's awesome.
State
champion.
Okay.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, we have a, with our team, they can compete within the region, but it's also a more affordable, cost-effective way for kids to participate.
So yeah.
I have to add, did you watch that movie?
I know we talked about it last time.
Which one?
You have the crock.
Oh yeah, the founder.
Yeah.
Yeah.
What did you think?
You see what's got?
One of my favorite movies.
That's
a good movie.
Even though, okay,
top
150,
all
right.
But
Ray Kroc wasn't a great, no, wait, is the building named
after Ray?
Well, so his wife, his
wife is
the, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Oh, because she didn't have money.
It's his money.
But it's a great story.
She grew up
poor.
And all her other friends, they're all going to the country clubs.
Yeah.
And
she always
felt so bad about that, that her vow was if she ever had money, she would make sure.
disadvantaged kids or whatever would have the exact same type of facilities as the rich kids.
Okay.
And that's why when
you
go through- And she's using his money, so it works out.
Okay, because Ray kind of screwed over the McDonald brothers.
A little bit.
Yeah, I mean, they still got a million.
Wow, they're fine.
They're
fine.
Okay.
But
she
was
here.
Yeah.
John Crock was here.
Yeah, for
the ribbon cutting that was, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, she, I mean, her dream was to create all these facilities.
And so we are one of the, we're one of 26 nationally.
So we're very lucky to have our building facility, but yeah.
Part of our funding is the endowment from Joan Crock, which is Ray Crock McDonald's money And so that keeps us with our facilities so any of our facility updates we don't have to worry about that
You walk into that place and you're thinking of the snazziest health club type thing you'll ever find
it's pretty fancy in some way especially Especially that aquatic center.
It's amazing.
Yeah.
Yeah, so we have a lot of different things going on tomorrow.
We have the grounded cafe coming
the food truck to do free meals for our seniors.
Nice, what kind of food?
What do
you got
there?
They're doing, I think they're doing breakfast tomorrow.
They're doing breakfast burritos, I believe.
Any
seniors that are members of the crock?
So anyone could come, technically.
The Grand Decafé, they do donation rate.
It's like donation, asked for donation rate, $5, but technically
free.
Scott, you want to talk about the greatest gym in Green Bay?
They're gymnasium.
Oh, thank you.
It's
unbelievable.
It's so big and it's a great
floor.
But the thing is, you guys, I think you guys close it half off now because of pickleball, right?
We do.
Yeah.
So we have half of it is for pickleball now.
Um, but then the other half is typically like we rotate between, we have some fitness classes in the morning, then it's full court basketball.
We also have full court volleyball as a possibility.
Um, but yeah, the pickleball players, we have a very engaged community.
I always thought pickleball was just this, oh, Patty King.
No,
no, no.
into it.
Yes.
Yeah, we actually partnered with Prevea to do a seminar about injury prevention with pickleball specifically and they've been running that.
I've seen them running that seminar more now because it's like such a high impact is competitive and so but it's great to see people getting active.
Absolutely.
And
it's getting some older people.
Which I think is
good.
Yeah, looking for something
in these are all what you would consider seniors and they were as Yeah,
there's a lot of league that's very very pop.
I mean not to say your place, but you know, they've converted some of the city parks and of course west not western Who's their affiliate the tennis club, you know, right?
I'm enrolled.
That's
that's a pickleball
now.
So yeah, it's it's unbelievable.
Yeah, there's a pickleball club in ashwabana.
Yeah
We're
going pickles and bags.
Hey, Todd.
Oh, yeah, we have a place
in Oshkosh.
It's like
throwing bean bags
and
playing pickleball and
a
bar.
Where's that over in Oshkosh?
It's an Oscar.
It's
an Oscar.
She was on our show.
Oh, okay.
And she was a young guy,
entrepreneur, you know,
saw the market and said, look, have we delivered this.
We're the ones that ask the questions.
Oh,
wow.
Grace.
Wow.
Sometimes I just have to check again.
So this
week, you're celebrating this week, Salvation Army Week.
I think that's cool that you spend a day honoring the employees because that's,
they
work hard.
Yeah, yeah, we, and we, we're trying to like, for crock specific, we're trying to break it up into different topics like our seniors.
So tomorrow is going to be our senior appreciation.
So that's our members and also our staff.
And then Friday's gonna be our family programs.
We have some
great
like parent and taught classes.
We have a wonderful aquatics instructor who just does parent and taught classes in the water.
So it's getting little kids, tinies, really comfortable with getting in the pool.
Let's talk about your arts.
I think some people look at you as
a gym.
We just had our recital this weekend actually.
I like
the music.
I think
that's important too that you offer
that.
Yeah.
Yeah, so we I just want to say
we did a radio show there one time Murphy in the morning We
did
it was like the best acoustics, you know,
because you know Yeah, we had we're very lucky to also have a fine arts program, which is kind of special for something like us So we have a full music program as well as painting.
We have a pottery studio.
So we've a folk you can like
I don't know what the word is, but we have a kiln.
So we glaze things and create products like that.
Um, and then also we have a dance program.
We have an auditorium that we use for, there's church there on Sundays, but then also we do get to do like performances there.
We had a concert there in January.
That was a full, um, brass band from Chicago.
That was a salvation army band.
And it was the coolest because that acoustics, like we didn't have to do any like speakers or anything like that.
Like it just was that sound really.
kids to see that and
like I
want to do that and you provide instruments too which is
really cool yes yeah
it was expensive
yeah and also with our Salvation Army as
But as an organization, Salvation Army, both on Croc as well as the core side, we do care so much about music education for kids.
We actually have been hosting our state's music school, our divisional high quarters, that's what it's called.
So every once a month, we have kids coming in from across the state, from Milwaukee, from even Escanaba, the UP accounts in our state territory.
Yeah, and they do this music school through our state Salvation
Army.
This week, do you do this every year?
I hope so.
The Salvation
Army Week?
Yeah, it's a national holiday.
I believe President Eisenhower deemed it a national holiday.
I think something like that.
It's incredible.
Why don't you talk about the Kroc Center, but other things you do for the community that people may not know.
Some of that?
Sure.
Yes.
Yes.
So we have, um, on our social services side.
So we, things like we have a pathway of hope program, which is our family case management.
Um, we have, of course, we do have a rental assistance program when we can have that.
Um, we do have support for emergencies and disaster services.
That was actually something we served during the draft, um, giving, um, food to first responders.
And then we were on call if there was an emergency, our croc.
was going to be used as a family assistance center.
Oh, wow.
Yeah, so people were going to be relocated.
So it was a big setup.
I had to work with the police department and the fire department.
It was in state.
The NFL's emergency services came in.
Wow.
Yeah, so because of our Salvation Army, we have a whole emergency disaster services system.
Would
you be that way for tornadoes or something?
Yeah.
So we have a group of our officers.
executive directors basically, they're called officers for us.
They are certified in this.
And then we also have volunteers and then like some staff or service, like I'm certified to serve in emergency disaster services.
So it's very, it's a very
big
system.
I know
this week is recognition, but you're not fundraising this week,
which
is, you know.
Yeah.
Yeah, we're doing other things.
On the other
hand, you can tell people because people
need to
support the Salvation Army.
Cause I think there's a
lot of things that you do that people don't know.
I mean,
But yeah, it's just great.
We're so lucky to have you in here.
I
agree.
Can I tell you something
quickly?
Okay, Ray Crock from San Diego, his wife from San Diego.
You know who was the one of the top people for the Salvation Army in San Diego in the 30s?
Ted Williams mom and she used to take him in the little
Salvation Army outfit to all the different things and then Ray Crock and Joan Crock.
They're all from San Diego at the same time and Ted Williams mom was the leader
It's
a great baseball player.
Yeah, like the greatest baseball
player You assume, okay, whatever
Splendid splinter.
Yeah.
No, he's a great back me up Scotty.
He's a sports guy Grace.
Thanks for having thanks for being here.
Thank you
Rock Center's unbelievable.
Back after
this.
And of course, the Civic Media app.
Beautiful day out there.
Forecast, mix of sun and clouds, possible showers.
High of 70 today.
We got some texts here.
We're talking earlier about restaurants.
This is a text.
More restaurants should bring back the dinner or lunch counter.
Chuck from Green Bay.
I will sit at a counter by myself all day long.
That's what they're
for.
I love that eagles at Packers Monday night November 10th Let's be kind of fun.
Um got another one here I had regulars that were at my restaurant that ate and drank coffee every day bothered me But they were spending on the average eight to ten dollars a day unlike people that popped in once or twice a month cater to the regulars as they keep the lights on
No, that's the long view that makes sense to me
The White Sox used to play a few games a year at County Stadium after the Braves left before the Brewers came in.
I just go to Twins Games, Twins White Sox Games at County Stadium to see Harman Killer Brew, my favorite player.
I went there in August of 1968 to see the White Sox against the Detroit Tigers.
1968?
Yes, at County Stadium.
Scott, you're on your own.
No, but I'm trying to think of like some of the guys on the Tigers.
Well, that was that great team out K-Line and everybody.
Okay Earl Wilson was a starting pitcher and took a fit when he was that bad He took a fastball to the face.
I'll never never forget that But you know one of the reasons they were doing that because the riots in Chicago
Okay,
and Kamitsky.
I've never been to Kamitsky.
Well, no once I was years ago, but Bad part of town right or what it used to be.
Yeah
Yeah, not okay.
Yeah.
So and that's where the riots were.
So they actually moved some games to Milwaukee to get away from the riots.
Yeah,
good history right there.
Thank you.
I mean, not positive history, but
history lessons history.
You gotta learn it.
Hey, before we go on to you, I have to say, I have to give a happy birthday.
I've been trying to do this since yesterday.
My sister-in-law lives in Florida.
She is our most loyal listener.
It was her birthday yesterday and my wife's like, make sure
you try me to
sing.
She sent me a text and said,
with John Sing and I'm like, uh, he doesn't do that anymore.
Yeah, I do.
Um, I, I certainly do.
And I just want to say that, um, pretty cool that she moved her, she works for a company and part of her, she wanted to move to Florida.
I didn't like the weather here and the company's like, well, okay.
And they hooked her office all up that she's still like working here.
I mean, they really like good employees.
She gets to live there, owns a condo and she's.
you know, loves it.
She's one of my, she, I told you yesterday, she's my favorite sister-in-law.
She's just awesome.
So she said, well, could John sing me happy birthday?
And I'm like, we, we, we stopped doing that.
Oh, thanks for,
I did it just the other day.
Todd, was that, do we, do we still allow that?
We do.
Oh, John.
Yeah.
He's just saying when earlier this week or last week, sure.
Okay.
All right.
So Debbie, Debbie.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday to you.
Happy birthday, dear Debbie.
Creepy.
Yeah, a little creepy.
All right, thank
you, John.
Happy
birthday, Debbie.
Debbie Hyman in Florida.
All right.
Thank you, John.
Happy birthday,
John.
Yes.
He, right?
Yeah.
It's right out.
That's
Nick Rails from the rail train.
Remember when, who's the guy from Saturday Night Live that did that?
Nick Rails on the rail train?
Oh, Billy.
Billy Crystal?
No, no, Bill Murray.
Yeah.
Yeah, where's the lounge singer?
That's right.
That's the lounge singer.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's who you
are.
Absolutely.
I know.
I just want to
be.
I
thought
you
were trying to be
Marilyn Monroe.
I honestly thought you were.
Look at
you.
Kind of like a male Marilyn Monroe.
Yeah out of the cake, but yeah No, he reminds me of you know alone singer because those yeah, they can't sing that's like
But nobody his character's name was Nick somebody I thought no because it was Bill Murray.
Yep.
Nick reels all right You
know sometimes you see videos and like it's very cringing you almost don't want to watch
I saw that live right here.
It
was like a
cringee.
He never looked
up.
Yeah, no.
His head was looking down.
Yeah,
it was a cringee.
But there was no way to shut off the TV.
And you were laughing
too,
though.
Yeah, so that's good.
I wasn't expecting
that, Scott.
No, I'm just kidding.
No, it was that.
You're actually a good singer.
Oh, stop, Scott.
Come on.
Don't do that.
No, no, no.
Even I have
to
say.
I
think you
try.
He does try.
I try to be as good as humanly
possible.
Wait, you were being serious?
I try to be as good as humanly possible.
So wait, that's not like a...
100%.
When you're singing like that, that's not a bit.
Nope.
In my head, I sound magnificent.
I know, and that's dangerous.
Very dangerous.
In my ears, I sound honestly...
Magnificent.
He's tone deaf.
No, is it one of those things?
No, they think they
are.
Yeah, when you hear yourself, though, you know how people hate hearing themselves talk.
Yeah.
If I would record you and you listen and you'd be like, oh, God, that's awful.
I don't know.
I don't think I've ever really heard it.
I don't think I want to.
It's probably a good idea.
I don't want to break the magic.
Right, right.
That's right.
Wow.
Yeah.
OK, but yes, thank you for that.
Wow.
So Scott,
what
are you working on
now?
You know, spring is so difficult.
I start on Monday panicking.
almost like back in the day, when you'd have a dream that you overslept for a final or something, I have this thing of, I gotta find something every day.
I still have those dreams from the TV.
You're going out there and you got nothing done.
I get the thing where you go to school and there's a test.
We're all saying the same thing.
Yeah,
and that's what these like three, four weeks are until you get to the state.
I agree.
For some reason, in my experience, spring sports does not move the needle for a lot of people.
It's not that...
Right, there's not in but it's just not
yeah, I agree and you try and whatever but it just
I Yeah, it's it's a football basketball
But are you covering with a guy on here from lacrosse not from lacrosse who coaches that and just thinks it's taking off
fascinating You say that I'm talking to the Notre Dame girls lacrosse coach today
because they're they're good
It's a collection of like a bunch of
right that right that doesn't get the attention that
Not here yet.
Have you
ever heard of a Cricket Field in Green Bay?
I have
not.
Okay, I'll take you there after the show.
Okay.
Field trip.
He
swears he
dedicated a Cricket Field in Green Bay.
I did dedicate it.
If it's still there, now that's a question, but I did dedicate it.

Be
Coming to Northeast Wisconsin, live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.
And
here are your hosts, John Mino and Jim Schmidt.
Hey, thank you very much.
Welcome back, Mino the Mayor, here on hour number three.
And it's a beautiful morning out there.
Got a couple of great guests right now, Sherry Omrick and John Calvert.
Talked about Kayak, Wisconsin.
Jim's trying to get some free stuff to put in an orchard from John.
Scott Vence and I are
getting workout tips from Sherry.
Well, John owns the Lyser lawn care and he's been, he knows that stuff better than anybody's been doing in my yard for years.
And that, remember when those people on talked about pear trees?
He just gave me the design for my yard.
Although John, if you do that with them, I just want you to know what you're dealing with.
And I'm not, I'm not putting anything down because I'm the exact same way.
We were shocked when we had the young lady on talking about this great thing.
They're doing with all these trees.
They want people to grow trees and everything.
We didn't quite understand pollination.
Yeah.
But these trees need to be pollinated.
You said
cross pollinated.
Yeah.
Cause that's my word of the day.
Did you know that?
No.
I'm friends with John.
I don't need to know
that.
You told us your garden experience.
Say that one again.
Yeah.
So when I bought my.
I had this beautiful garden and really big dreams and John told me to tear that down.
I'm never gonna use it.
Go to the farmer's market.
And I'm like, what?
Appalled, like this is my dream, right?
And then as it got worse and worse through the years, he did end up tearing it down for me last year.
And that was a really
good
move.
He's been
doing this for a while, so.
Hey, kayaking, now we, I would like you to comment on how the city's doing, but we have those kayak launches now and even handicapped.
Do you think we're...
with you on this?
Yeah, so I do the kayak rentals in Lily Lake, so not quite Green Bay, Brown County.
And then I also have- Which is
still one of the most- It is.
Unknown, underrated- Let's keep it.
Little spots in all of North-North America.
Let's
keep
it that way.
Right?
Yeah, that's
true.
Well, when we were here last time, it was not the season.
And then you were telling me that you were from kayaking families.
Yes.
And there was a little bit of a debate about
that.
Oh yeah, no.
But we want to invite you to reuse our kayaks with us.
So now we're in season.
So we want to show you how easy it is.
Absolutely.
I'm
in.
Come and see it.
You in?
I am.
Do you have life preservers on there?
Absolutely.
I heard earlier in the show that you can't swim, so we'll make sure that we don't just put the life jacket on the boat.
You have to act kind of
race me and him across Lily Lake.
I'll do that.
Done.
I'll do that.
That'd be a
That'd be really fun to see.
I'm in.
I have to get insurance through the company.
I have a really good waiver.
I'll take care of
it.
Perfect.
What do they call it when swimmers try to swim across English Channel and they got those little boats, not guide boats, rescue boats or something.
They have people like close by in case anything.
Like spotters.
Oh yeah.
We need a couple of
those.
Oh yeah.
Yes.
Or not.
Awesome.
We're not, yeah.
Yeah, John's kind of the right-hand man for Lily Lake, well, for all of Kayak Wisconsin, so he can be the spotter and, you know, he can actually put the kayaks out there for you and do all the stuff.
Great.
So is this a special week, Kayak Wisconsin?
Or is this a new program?
Or is it just, what is Kayak?
What is?
Because it's gotten popular.
It is.
I mean, it keeps growing.
So Kayak Wisconsin, you're promoting the industry or what?
No, she's the boss.
I'm just the employee and I just get the kayaks out.
I do all the grunt work and...
Awesome, and that's it.
I got the equipment to haul all the kayaks.
So it's pretty easy rather than yeah renting you haul
Yeah, so it's a it's so the business name is kayak, Wisconsin and itself serve rentals So when someone makes a reservation we give them access to who?
Masterlock so they download an app and then they go unlock it by themselves put it in the water by themselves and then come back We'll come with you guys.
Thank you.
So are they one?
Two people, what
do you run?
Both.
So most locations have two tandems and then four singles.
Wrightstown has the most because that was the first location and we wanted to accommodate more school groups and so anyone that does a big group does it in Wrightstown.
Now Jim mentioned about disabled.
Folks, that's going to be a big thing, isn't it?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yes.
And you mentioned the launches.
So they're ADA accessible.
Yeah.
So Green Bay has those.
And so do all of the locations, except that we also have a location at the Duck Creek Quarry.
That one doesn't have the launch, but it's shallow, easy in, but it just doesn't have the ADA part.
That's awesome.
I've seen that query a million times years past, and I never thought, oh, this could be a cool, that in the last couple of years has become a really cool recreational place.
That's
very cool.
Didn't they get a little, is that open to anybody and everybody or do they kind of?
We have to have a wristband or something, right?
Don't they have to be hard too to get
a deal?
You do, so you need, you can get a free wristband if you live in Howard.
You can pay, it's almost nothing, it's like $50 for the season, but you do not need a wristband to rent the kayaks because that's on the other side, that's not in the gated side.
So yeah, you don't need a wristband.
Okay, all right, that's cool.
And we had a lady on here who did like kayak places in the state
Bab Smith.
Bab Smith.
And traveled the state and wrote books on it.
And it wasn't like young healthy people like you, not that she's, but it was just older people that really go on these kayak excursions.
Yeah, some people are all, mine is very recreational.
Like, so a lot of people go kayaking and then camping, you know, and that's not.
What we do, I mean, you go.
No, ours is like very easy access.
It's fast enough that you could go on a lunch break.
They're sit on top, sturdy kayaks.
So, but yeah, some people get really into it.
And I've never even done it.
You'd think owning kayak Wisconsin, but that would be my hobby.
But I just, no, I like a Hilton.
What
is the average rental time?
Do people rent it for two hours?
Is that average?
It's usually two hours.
This year at some of the locations we're offering one.
mainly because I have kids and sometimes young kids don't last that long and I want to make it affordable, but most people in our wouldn't be long enough.
But if you have a five-year-old like I do, an hour is plenty.
Is it okay for kids to be in a kayak?
Oh, absolutely.
The tandems actually have two big kid or adult seats and then there's a little molded seat in the middle so the little one can sit right in the middle so they can like have a free ride.
Oh, that sounds cool.
In the kayak, people can bring like...
Some snacks or a little lunch, right?
Oh, absolutely.
And if you bring a five-year-old, you should also bring Grace.
Well, that's cool.
How long does it take for somebody to feel comfortable using a kayak?
Ours are really wide.
They're actually fishing kayaks, and they're very sturdy.
So most times, like 30 seconds or so.
Right.
I mean, she's right about kayaks in the old days were much narrower.
And they still make that kind.
So if you wanted a fast race, you know, if you weren't just racing across Lily Lake, for example, you would want something that was a little tidbier.
I want something sleek.
Yes.
Cut through the water.
Yep.
They tip.
That's why you don't want those, Johnny.
No, you need the widest they have.
I'm pretty
wide, I think.
You'll be just
fine.
I have a lot of buoyancy in that way.
Now,
when did it, I mean, I don't, I remember the first story I did.
on a kayaker.
I didn't know anything about kayaking.
It was a young lady from Green Bay that used to actually train right over here at the Y in their pool.
I mean, that was like the only facility type thing they had.
And I remember doing the thing where the number one first thing you do in a kayaker is how to do the roll and the roll out and all those kind of things.
But she made the Olympic team from around here.
And I thought she helped put kayaking on the map for Northeast Wisconsin because we didn't know what kayaking was.
Was that what she was from?
Okay.
Yeah, she was.
I mean, I gave her
a key to
the city.
That was awesome.
She took a bronze.
She takes silver bronze.
Something.
She meddled the compass.
She meddled kayaking to Northeast Wisconsin.
That was a
while ago.
I don't
know if she...
So I didn't even know that.
So Wrightstown really is the kayaking mecca because that's where kayaking Wisconsin started, too.
I think that's where she was from.
She
wasn't from Green Bay, I know, but we had her come to this unbelievable.
Yeah, she meddled.
That's awesome.
Very cool.
Thank goodness I was here for you.
Yeah, wow.
And you know, the flipping in the kayak is part of the training to get licensed as they're a certified kayak instructor.
So I went through that stuff and you're supposed to go underwater and then when you practice, so they tip you over on purpose, you're supposed to slap the side of the kayak, you know, to see if someone's there and move your hand up and down to see if like your partner can just flip you over because it's easier than getting out.
And when I would do that, I, and I am, I've been a
lifeguard my whole life.
You know, I'm a strong swimmer and every time I was upside down strapped in a kayak, my bangs were like fast, fast, fast and get me out of here.
So yes, I am not into the flipping.
And
we don't have to, do you need a license to kayak?
Oh gosh, no.
No, this, that is just that, um, the way you're talking about that woman that was like flipping and stuff.
That is not, yeah, you don't need that.
So
from the United States Coast Guard auxiliary.
Wear your life jackets.
Yes, and wear them.
They've been on here a couple of times.
Don't just put them on your boat, because if your boat flips over, that's the problem.
There's some unbelievable sad stories that
they keep.
They've been on here a couple of times, and it's like, I mean, come on.
And they even give them to you free.
I don't know if they do that here in Green Bay, but if you don't have them.
But these are boaters.
Yeah,
they would give you the life, and people don't do that.
And then they lose their kid.
Oh my God.
So it's a rule.
If you're going to use a kayak, Wisconsin kayak, you actually have to have it on you, and it is included.
So you rent the kayak, you unlock the box with equipment, and then you unlock the kayaks.
So they are there, there's no excuse.
Johnny, what do you do with all this?
You haul the stuff in?
Is it weekly, or do you
leave it all summer?
No, I haul everything in spring.
We just got done last week, and it's easy for me.
I have the equipment, so it's like, instead of her making...
15 trips.
We're making like one or like two right trips.
And where do you want where the kayak launches there?
He said Lily Lake and right stone right stone
They own their own kayaks.
We just manage it for them.
So
What's the name of it?
Because they listen to us too.
We're all the way down to Oshkosh.
Okay, Hayesacre Park in Libosuit.
Hayesacre.
And then, I might say it wrong.
And then Miller Park in Wrightstown.
And then this year, we're adding East River in Bellevue, which will be an awesome location.
That will be good.
But unfortunately, it's record low water.
So that didn't happen yet.
There's one more coming that I asked at 7.30.
Hey, can I tell them?
And I didn't hear back yet.
So it's still a
secret.
I would think the Fox would be, or the East River rather,
would be
perfect.
Last year, I was the first time I ever kayaked down the East River.
Yeah, and I biked down the trail all the time But right on the river seeing everything from the river looking out.
Oh, it was We talk
about that
all the time turtles that were yes Fish and everything else that we're jumping think
about that with all the water we have here and people haven't seen our community from the water and
Kayak is probably the best way because it's, you know, slow and you can take a look at everything.
But even here on the East River, it's just really cool to go to Georgia Pacific and it's like, you know, I've been living here all my whole life.
This is an awesome
view.
It's a
whole different view.
Yeah, it's a definitely different view perspective.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, I think it's cool.
Yeah, that's great.
You're doing this.
All right.
So you're going to call us then with a new launch because you can't tell us right now.
Yeah.
Okay, that's
cool,
all right.
It's gonna
be a great launch, I'm telling you.
Really, it's exciting.
It is.
Tell me about the cost of something like this, and is it credit cards or cash?
How does this all work?
You book online, so you go to kayakwis.com, so the word kayak, and then WIS, short for Wisconsin.
Book your reservation, probably two hours.
The more advance notice, the better, just because it makes it easier for us.
My kids actually handle most of the customer service and programming and things once school is out, so that's really
nice.
Back to the mechanics of it a little bit, like let's say you wanted to go to Lily Lake today.
So somebody would go online, okay, and you'd give them a code for this big master lock type
thing?
So they'd book online, and when we get their reservation, and then we do the backend programming, and then they'll get an email saying download this app, and then they go click the lock that they're going to wake up, which is locking their equipment, then they click unlock in the app.
and then they go on their merry way.
It sounds
complicated,
but it's not.
I brought one to show you.
It's really simple to do.
So you walk up to a lock, you click on it.
Oh, sorry.
You click on it.
If Mino gets this, this is
very, very good.
This
would be very good for business.
Here, let me just open
this.
Jared, you hear me sing this?
Yeah.
I did hear you sing.
I just got, that was my text.
Who are you singing to?
His sister.
Oh, that's so nice.
Okay, I'm opening the app.
I should have had it open already.
Sorry about
that.
Okay, so we click this to wake it up.
Now click unlock.
And now pull it open.
Look
at how easy this is how we want people to do it, but if you call and you're like I read absolutely nothing you sent me and I can't figure out how to do this and you're just like no I'm not downloading an app I could also just tell you a four-digit code and you can click it Wow,
how was that Lily Lake last night working?
It was beautiful out there.
There was quite a few people out there.
Cool.
We're catching fish.
We're gonna do that.
Beautiful place.
We're gonna start a quick
break.
You guys took around?
Yep.
All
right.
We got Sherry and John from Kayak, Wisconsin back right after this.
Hey,
welcome back.
Mine are the mayor here, Sherry Omarek, John Calwirtz, Kayak, Wisconsin.
We had like, we've got like still lots of questions for you guys.
Go ahead, Jim.
But I
just, this Kayak, Wisconsin, I just want to.
Kayaking has become extremely popular, and it's a great place to do in Greater Green Bay.
You have a programmer, we just show up at Lily Lake, we show up at Wrightstown, and what was the place again in Toronto?
I mean, you know.
So there's five, so there's, I just need to, we're growing quite a bit.
Let
me
just take my fingers out and count.
We'll go south to north, Little Shoot, Wrightstown, and then Lily Lake.
And then East River isn't there yet because of low water levels, but it's coming.
And then the Duck Creek Quarry.
Awesome.
Well, that's right.
All right.
And we just go to kayakwis.com to look it up.
Want to share the pricing with us and how it works.
So we show up with a credit card.
I take it or cash.
Actually, you want to do everything online.
So you book it all in itself serve.
So often you don't even have to talk to us.
If you have
questions, you can certainly text or call.
But yeah, you do the reservation online.
It's $25 for two for two hours on a single kayak or $40 for a tandem in May.
If you do
because May is
always slow, especially on weekdays because everyone's still in school.
So if you rent in.
on a weekday, you'll get a free weekday later in the year, just to get the word out.
Does people dress any certain way when you're going out on a kayak?
Yeah, I think ABC, anything but cotton.
So,
yeah, because
cotton.
Wow, I didn't even know that either.
Yeah, well
done.
Your training manual
was missing that.
He just hauls the stuff out of me.
He doesn't need to know this stuff.
That's not a big thing, because Mr. Polyester here.
Why, what is, why?
Well, because if you get wet, you're going to get a lot colder and cotton.
You'd like some things that would dry faster.
So usually you want to dress for the temperature of the water, not the...
air in case you go in.
No one really plans on going in.
And it doesn't, it's, I used to say it's almost impossible to tip these wide stable kayaks.
I don't say that anymore because some people do find a way to tip them.
But how, why do they tip?
I mean, is it because it wakes from another boat or is it because they're screwing around or is it just because they.
Usually if
someone was getting scared or something, you know, like, um, and actually it used to happen more when they didn't use the ADA launches.
People do not usually fall out of their kayaks.
So it's in the launch if they fall out getting and getting out.
Yes.
So, but now there's a launch you just sit in.
And then you push off and you're there.
Okay, I got it.
When we first
started in Wrightstown, there wasn't a launch yet, so they all had to get in the water and that's where most people tipped.
All right, that makes sense.
I'm just thinking you guys are gonna do this, right?
Yeah, we're racing.
I think we've definitely got to film it, and I think we definitely have to film you guys getting in and out of the kayaks just in case something happens.
I don't think we need that.
But we have Lily Lake,
they're gonna have that easy in.
Why don't we're gonna go with Lily Lake?
If that thing, if the water raises a little
bit... Oh, the East River.
That would be fun.
That's really, really nice.
That
is great.
You know what that'd be like?
That'd be like, what's it called?
Skulls in the Olympic?
Scotty, what's that called?
Skulls, right?
The
Roars.
The
Roars.
The Roars.
Those are kayaks.
That's the same type of thing.
That's what I'm going to imagine myself doing.
There is a launch there, so it will be easy to get in at East River
too.
Is that the cast stock?
Not the cast.
Who's the guy?
So Todd, we're not going to be able to flip.
Who's the guy that I'm saying?
Well, I might do it.
The guy in front of the boat.
Yelling people.
Cocksmith.
Cockswain.
Yeah.
Something like that.
Kasak.
Or something.
Something like that.
All right, so we're doing that.
The water, isn't that, that East River is unbelievable.
Something that's too high, we couldn't run a marathon that one
year because the water is
too high and now it's too low.
Right.
But do you think it's going to be navigable this month, next month?
I think it will be.
We hope so.
But we don't even have the kayak rack there because
it's
all uncertain.
So we went from very excited to East River to hopeful.
What kind of training should a person do before they get involved with this competitively?
I didn't think you might be the first people that have ever wanted to compete
on kayaks.
Well, I'm that person.
But stretching for sure.
Maybe you're back a little bit your shoulders, but it just glides.
It's so easy.
Yeah, you don't have to do too much.
Todd.
I want to do this.
Do it.
I'm ready.
I want
to do this.
I want to be in the water with you guys, too
Do
you guys have one of those things though where you
could on
me too?
We're like for him.
Do you have like when those lift things you just?
Almost like you know those things in bars where they have the little kids can win the stuffed animals a little crazier
Put him in
something like that and just drop right into the kayak.
What do you think got something that John?
I don't think I don't think we can
Get something
made up you
can ask John ridiculous things and he will
say yes.
So
you could just ask him
to
find a clue to actually
carry you
in.
He will.
You're gonna have
a
crew.
That's gonna be fun.
And how many kayaks do you get?
Sold out?
I'm sure they're like the 4th of July.
Yeah, I'm busy.
Well, most nice weekend.
So last year it rained a lot.
So that was not a great effort.
How far advanced can we make reservations?
You could make them for the end of the season already if you wanted
to.
And
if it ended up that the weather wasn't great for you, you can change it.
We're pretty laid back about it.
So if you want a certain weekend, you should certainly book it in advance.
Oh, wow.
How fun is that for?
Yeah.
You know I raised our date night date night date night.
I mean that's pretty cool thing for a couple hours to go on and it's it is safe I mean Lily like how deep is Lily like 20
feet
We'll have to get back here
for that.
I don't
know gonna text here John would be out of the lake and Jim would be on the shore John would be yelling look Jim look I'm kayaking I'm kayaking way far from the shore Keep
kayaking John.
Thank you.
It's working
Yeah,
got
no ticks here have them come out Wednesday walkers group have them bring their bleacher chairs simple getting in and out to practice.
I don't know Patty explain more about that.
Yeah, I get one more question though
I watch these videos and guys, just because they're kind of freaky, but these guys that are fishing out the ocean in their kayaks and they got the like pedals.
Have you seen those?
Oh, yes.
And like a shark will come up next to them.
Have you seen those videos?
Or the whale that eats the kayak?
Yes.
Or the whale that eats
the kayak or and spit
it out.
It spit it out this year.
Yes.
Yeah.
Yes.
Well, we don't have to worry about that.
Lily Lake could have those
things.
Right, right.
Anything to worry about though.
I mean, remember those videos where this fish are jumping in the boat?
We have to worry about that.
And
these turtles, if you hit a turtle, they get mad or they
just know they're, they're more scared of you.
They barely see them.
I will say
snakes on the water, Johnny.
Oh
my gosh.
No, I would.
Well, not that I've seen any, but there's, you know, the turtles are huge on these rivers.
Yeah.
You would believe how big they
are.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Oh, I've seen that.
Yeah.
I've seen those on shore cause I used to.
Walk that I love I think Green Isle part that whole that is awesome.
That is good.
Really great.
Yeah, love it Hey, thanks for being here man.
This was fun stuff you guys.
Yeah,
thank you other how do people get a hold of you?
Kayak with calm
and you're gonna let us know when The East is open.
Yeah, it will promote absolutely.
I'm training until then
Thank you

this
Take Mino and the Mayor on the go with the Civic Media app.

Download the app, choose WISS or WGBW, and tune in anywhere, anytime.
Now, back to Mino and the Mayor.
Here's John Mino and Jim Schmidt.
Hey, welcome back.
Mino and the Mayor here, and a good look at Tuesday morning.
Tremendous lineup of guests, man.
Grace Hagemann's Salvation Army was awesome.
Shuri Amarnik and John CalWords, Kayak, Wisconsin.
That's exciting stuff and it's
great business.
Hey,
Bensley.
Yeah.
Would you like to get into our regatta?
I think I'd be one.
Excellent.
Excellent.
Oh, man.
That's right.
You want to be into it?
I'm in,
man.
Oh.
OK.
All right.
The four of us, East River, as soon as the water comes up.
Yeah.
I like it.
I like it a lot.
Bring some sandwiches.
We'll take a couple hours.
Yeah.
We're not going to this race.
I don't know about this race thing.
You really want to do that?
Oh, yes.
All right.
All right.
All right.
I'm in.
Greg Vatney,
Rar West Art Museum.
He said he's already been going up and down.
He's been working out.
Look at those pipes on that guy.
Up and down.
Yeah, absolutely.
Right.
So Rar West in Mantuaq.
Great museum.
75 years old.
Well, thank you.
Yeah.
75.
Wow.
Celebrating our 75th year this year.
all year long.
I think I knew that.
You know, if you're going to technically say it, maybe I come back in September, I think it was September 19th of 1950.
City of Manitowoc decided, hey, we're going to establish this museum.
They established the board of directors, hired the first director, decided to pay him, thank God, because that leads to me being employed there.
Right.
And it's great.
And the entire 75 years, we've been a public facility.
So we're a department of the city of Manitowoc, which is extremely rare, especially for an art museum to be owned by a city.
But also, it's a great public-private partnership.
It's not just publicly funded.
We have great private funding partners that help to really get us a step or two above what you might...
find normally in a small
town.
I want to talk about your year celebration events, but does the city feed you guys?
Are you self-sustaining?
Or how does that work?
The city helps to feed us, I guess is the best way of saying it.
They help to feed you.
Yeah, absolutely.
Yeah, absolutely.
So we're at the department of the city.
Yeah.
Yeah, well, he appreciates it.
Thank God you have
a young mayor.
All right, so what do you got going on to celebrate?
All right, so we not only have
The 75th anniversary for us, but we got another secondary anniversary that I want to talk about I had said we have great through the years We've had great private sport that have gotten us a step many steps beyond what we would normally be and Ruth West who
is
the reason why it's a raw West Really turbocharged the museum in the 1970s with her Ability with funds to buy art, but also her keen eye for art
And towards the end of her life, she knew that she wanted to do something special.
She bought an art piece from the artist, George O'Keefe.
George O'Keefe, by the way.
Wow, that's a big name.
For anybody who doesn't know, one of the biggest 20th century artists, one of the biggest 20th century American artists, many people don't know that she is from Wisconsin, originally born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.
She grew up
there, grew up on a farm in Sun Prairie.
And so,
We don't have that many museums in the state with Georgia O'Keeffe stuff.
This was a great opportunity.
And she actually bought this from Georgia O'Keeffe's family.
Georgia O'Keeffe died in 1986.
In 1990, the family did an auction of some of her artwork.
And Birch and Pine Tree, number two, which she had painted in 1925, was purchased by the Rar West Art Museum.
So it's had two owners, Georgia O'Keeffe.
The original price?
I think it was 1.2.
1.5.
1.5 doesn't go down.
And it didn't go down.
So you can add zeros to that now.
That's awesome.
And is that always on display?
We try to keep it on display because there's an expectation.
But obviously you want to make sure that's in good condition.
You really want to
go looving.
Where's the Mona Lisa?
Yeah, we took it down for a
couple of
months.
Yeah, we took it down.
Come back.
So yeah, it is our hallmark, and that George O'Keefe has traveled all around the world.
Right, because you do learn that stuff out.
We have a great collection.
We have other stuff, too.
But man, that's a big one.
And as I mentioned, she originally painted it in 1925, which makes this, it's 100th anniversary.
So we're
doing, on this Thursday, the 15th, we'll be hosting a large event celebrating at Georgia O'Keeffe 100th birthday.
anniversary, whatever you want to call it.
Do you have that
on display then?
It is on display.
And we've got a speaker, a PD Young who's coming in from the Art Institute of Chicago, who knows a heck of a lot more than I do about George O'Keefe.
And he'll be at the museum.
I think that's pretty
cool if you can go and look at a $1.2 million painting
rig in
downtown
Manning Rock.
Well, yeah.
And like I said, it's worth a lot more than that now.
Yeah.
And so, yeah.
And that's really was Mrs. West's key.
You know, she, her thought was like, why do you, should you have to go to Chicago or New York or LA or Paris to see artwork like this?
Why can't it be in your neighborhood?
And why can't it be free?
So she was always pushing, like this is a city facility.
I
can answer those questions.
Well, yeah, you
can.
Money, money,
money.
Exactly right.
But she was the one who also put her money
in.
What was her connection, her husband then?
What
was her connection to Manitowoc?
Yeah, the West were Manitowoc company.
So shipbuilders and then crane builders.
And that was the thing.
And John West.
That's a pretty good union of a couple of names.
Yeah, no kidding.
And she pushed it.
And John pushed it.
And they also had some artists in the family.
So she was already kind of predisposed.
But man, we had a great community in Manitowoc that also supported us.
All right,
so that's Thursday.
You're doing that.
That's Thursday.
The talk is free to the public.
It's 3 p.m.
Okay.
Um, and, uh, we also had an event that already sold out before it, uh, uh, our friends group did a tea with Georgia event that's sold out.
So that's, that's going on.
If you want to get on the wait list, you can contact the museum.
That's cool.
And, uh, and get on a wait list for that.
But I
think the last time you were here, Todd came down to one of your, didn't you go down to one of the, was it this?
Sputnik
Fest last year.
What
did you go to?
Oh, Amanda did.
Amanda
went.
Amanda.
Yes.
Tell us about that.
What?
Oh my god, I love Sputnik Fest.
Last year, my kid won second.
Oh my gosh,
really?
Yeah, he did.
He was the one with like the six arms that were hanging.
Absolutely.
Yup.
Yeah, cause I was MCing, right?
Yep.
Yep.
Yes.
Absolutely.
So with Sputnik Fest, for anybody who doesn't know, 1962, part of the lore of the 75 years of the RR West, we, uh, we had a, a special guest, uh, the Sputnik four spacecraft crash landed in Manitowoc, the largest piece crash right in front of the museum.
So every year in September, we run Sputnik Fest to kind of, uh, I don't want to say, I don't know whether it's not commemorated.
It's just an excuse for a huge party.
Why not?
Well,
I was at, uh, I was an emcee for your Harderama last year in Two Rivers, Manitowoc.
Of course.
And that was the theme.
The theme was Sputnik.
Yeah, exactly.
It's something, I mean.
Amanda?
Can we bring the green beer back?
Yeah, we'll work with one of our local brewers.
I mean, I know, uh, what do we have, um, uh, Petskull.
in Manitowoc, did a green beer for us.
So I could talk with Paul.
Oh, that's a fun place.
We could talk with Paul about it.
That guy's fun.
Yeah, we've had them on.
They know what they're doing there.
He's a great guy.
And you know, Manitowoc being a small town that it is.
I'm not from Manitowoc, but my wife is.
I think we've talked about this before.
We all married Manitowoc ladies, right?
Yeah.
And we...
So Paul was a good friend of my wife's family for years.
So I can remember when he was brewing just in his back rooms.
All right,
those kind of things have gotten so popular in that
area though.
You know what?
That's because it's done well.
That's what I mean.
When people are passionate about it and they share their passion with people and it's beer and it's good beer, that works.
But
it's one of those things we talk about this when you go to another town.
What you know forget the Perkins of the world or the whomever whomever's find these local people that have started up something like this and Manitowoc two rivers that whole area
has been real
big with that lately Haven't
they they have and I'll tell you what those local places invest locally.
Yeah, and they invest in
cultural stuff.
So they are some of our greatest supporters are these local businesses, family-owned businesses that know the value of having an art museum like the Rar West in their community, and they support us.
Yeah.
So the museum,
everybody's driven by it.
Yeah.
I mean, you
can't miss it.
Eight
Street in Manitowoc.
But people, open house, open hours, tell me how that works, because museums are...
I don't know if intimidating is the right word, but I don't,
I think intimidating is the right word.
And honestly, I think that Sputnik Fest is one of those things that lowers that intimidation, opens the doors up.
And we try to do that, you know, internally, our theme has been, let's get more people, more access to more of our stuff, more of our collection.
And that's what we've done over the past few years.
We've made huge renovations to the museum.
We added a six stop elevator so that the historic virus or our mansion, our original building that started the museum.
is fully accessible for the first time.
We've got a brand new East Lawn that's all great for Sputnik Fast, but great for events that we're doing all summer long.
So we've got classes outside.
People can stop in and see outdoor sculpture anytime.
It's all about accessibility.
Actually,
if you're driving past, look for the sculptures outside.
That's kind of the best way to...
Yeah, absolutely.
That should let you know what's
inside.
Amanda?
No, I got one more thing to add.
So like...
My son recently had a piece of artwork at the raw West and I think it's amazing that you guys took all the school districts and put all their artwork All throughout the art museum because most more often than not they just do that in the school They don't really they
don't have an opportunity
that
so that is again
Part of the legacy of the museum.
We were founded in 1950.
One of our first exhibits in early 1951 was area youth art.
We've been doing it since because as a city facility, we're mission driven not only to showcase world-class art from all around the world, but also to be the art focused.
gallery for our community.
So we have community art events that go on, whether it's youth art, which we do every springtime, or local art, like we've got a juried show coming up, Milestones.
And this is a plug that that if anybody who is an artist wants to submit, you can go to the RAR West website, rarwestartmuseum.org and click the link and submit artwork for our biennial juried show that
that comes up in August.
Let's go with Greg Vadney, Rar West Art Museum in Manitowoc.
Talk about their summer programs.
You guys do great things down there, brother.
That's
very good.
What you're doing about getting the kids in there.
Cause then you talk about that.
It's an
organization factor.
It's like, well,
I've
been in
there before and not only have I been in there, but I've shown my art.
Right.
I'm an artist that's been in there.
Scotty, you're an artist at all.
You seem like you would
have been an artsy
guy.
You seem like you would have
been.
But you
know what?
Isn't it?
kind of your interpretation of things, like everybody can be an artist, right?
I
mean,
but do you do write?
Do you?
I definitely write.
I didn't mean like that.
I know you're a writer.
Do you write any poetry, short stories, things outside?
No, I know you're a
writer.
No, I don't have many towns.
Paints?
I
did when I was like six and keeping the
lines.
You seem like you
would have been that artsy guy.
No.
No.
But really, if I do a stick figure and I
go, this is what it means, can I get that?
Now, don't
worry.
There's still time.
I mean, we can build off of your existing talent.
We've got classes for any age.
Tell me
about the classes you offer there.
I'm not sure I know you
offer classes.
Yeah, sure.
So during the daytime, you can find preschool classes.
And we do a lot of classes that are both for homeschool families and then after
school.
Right.
Essentially the same type of class, but done one during the daytime.
So homeschool families have access to it and then one done in the afterschool hour.
So if you're going to, you know, your local public school or parochial school.
Love
it.
And again, you guys were talking about intimidation factor work, but there's a little bit of a snob factor too that some people might have about
going to a museum.
There's no doubt about it.
And what you guys are
doing is just the
opposite.
Well, and it's tricky too, because in the in the world of museums, they call it like mansion on the Hill syndrome and we are literally
a mansion on a hill.
So it is something that's intimidating.
And we got to remind ourselves every day that like it's not what we see is not what the public sees.
I got to ask one last question, Jim.
I'm sorry.
Hey, do you have any more displays on linen and place settings?
Oh, yeah, we'll be doing that
in October.
I love
that
in October.
Yeah, absolutely.
Favorite thing
you guys
have all year.
We had.
Okay.
So last year we celebrated an anniversary.
I'm
big into that.
I know that sounds a little, a little weird, but
I respect that.
Yeah.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah.
There's something for everybody in October.
We're going to have it back.
We had like 75 submissions this year for table settings.
Get ready for it.
I might
Jimmy got some to submit.
I think I.
I'll talk to you offline.
Get your
China
together.
Greg Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg
Vatney.
Greg Vatney.
Greg
Vatney.
Don McClain, 1971.
Vincent.
Beautiful
as you.
Are we doing this because Scott?
Starry night.
Why are we doing this song?
I don't know
why, Scott.
I like it because
it's a famous
painting.
No, because we used it coming out of the...
the RAR West, right?
Yes.
And that comes back from break then.
All right.
The
song is about Vincent van Gogh.
Okay.
Yep.
That
all
works together.
I do.
There's never a song that Todd plays just for the sake of it.
I know that's why I was looking for it.
For the most part, there's always a meaning.
Because of Vincent, it was got fancy and we're tying it to.
Oh, I see what you're
trying to do.
Honoring
our guests.
So
you cover sports.
Have you been with the press?
Is that what, 20 years?
Since 2000.
23
The
biggest sports thing we've ever had here was a couple weeks ago the NFL draft
ice ball, right?
Well, yeah, yeah, yeah, I just meant his work.
Yeah, but
we didn't know it going into the
ball Think about it.
This was promoted for a year.
Yes.
It was
a year Yeah, that's a long time to every day.
We have to read something about it.
So
What is your, from your angle, what's your assessment of it?
And if you had a grade at ABC, how would you come in, Scott?
Geez, I would think, see, I thought it was going to be a disaster.
I really did.
You were one of those people.
Yep, I thought the, like I thought it was, so it was pleasantly not that.
So I think, you know, you don't want to be too easy of a grader and just say an A. I'd say B plus.
Now I think some people were disappointed in certain aspects.
parking cars in their neighborhood didn't make as much money as that they were hoping to.
But I think there was only like two or three arrests total, which is pretty darn impressive over three days.
But it
wasn't like, like we're so the first night there, it wasn't that walking, cause I was thinking when I started walking over from Belin to there and I saw the number of people I thought,
Okay, this is about at least twice as much and then I Dom and I were and I said this is probably three times as much as a game Yeah, and you think about a game how many drunk people spilling beer and swearing and it's like as it could be three times that and it was a tenth of that at the most I thought it was a really well-mannered crowd.
Yeah, and I wonder if that's because People who get black out drunk or right it's probably a
It's not a game.
There's not action, right?
So it's like, it's a different crowd.
It's not the place for that.
A different vibe.
A different vibe.
Yeah, so.
And I'm sure the, well, the chief of police obviously gave it an A, because
actually Scott, I think it was one arrest.
And I think
they had a couple of ejections, 12 or
something, but it wasn't.
So they wanted to, I'm sure the chief said, kick these guys out, don't arrest them.
We don't arrest them, we don't arrest them, we don't arrest them, they're
too high.
And I think the Packers,
rated it pretty high too as a success.
They have to though, right?
Probably.
I mean, the Packers aren't going to come on go, you know, we were very disappointed.
Yeah.
So they don't count.
We could have done better.
Well, that's true.
I guess the NFL rated it high because 14 million people
watched
it.
So
that's why they weren't.
I wouldn't care anything about what the NFL thinks about one of their.
I agree.
The sports guys.
I agree.
We're all jaded after going with the NFL a lot of years.
We get kind of jaded.
Well, I mean, they're not going to be.
No, I mean, that's not the
business.
They're not
going to be Dick Bennett.
I blame
myself.
Right.
We lost and I blame myself.
They wouldn't do that.
Now, I will say this.
It wasn't, it wasn't a contest.
So it comes off a little bit more believable because there wasn't anything.
Right.
You know, but I will say this now in retrospect, you realize that you have hardcore.
draft people.
They're not coming for the party.
They're coming for the draft.
Correct.
Wouldn't you agree with that?
Oh no, 100%.
I think maybe people weren't expecting that.
They thought it was going to be kind of like a game crowd.
Hey, what's going on in Green Bay?
Nobody went anywhere.
It was to see the picks.
And I think it was just sold to us.
This was once in a lifetime.
So I think some people came just to
say it was there.
Yep.
And I think it will be, right?
I mean, maybe a
But I'll never go to another one.
Like 25, 30 years.
But
I thought was really cool.
It could have been promoted a little bit more, but I thought some of the displays were awesome.
I mean, not just the rings, but the lockers and Heisman Trophy.
I
just that stuff that you just don't see personal and up close.
And other than maybe Friday morning, the weather was that they got lucky.
Yeah.
I mean, it could have been
bad.
I know.
So, you know.
I'll take, can I tell you one, not complaint, but kind of thing I think could have been better.
It's your show.
I think the Packers could have had, for one thing, I wish they had Bart Starr Jr.
call off a draft pick.
I wish it would have had Donald Driver call off a draft pick.
I think there are some other people in Packer history that could have been pretty cool to have up there.
I will hear your opinion, I'll tell you what my suggestions
would be.
Do you mean saying any pick or a Packers pick?
A packers' pack.
Okay, but were you not happy with the selection of Jordy Nelson or Dave Robinson, Jerry Cramer?
It
was
okay.
I just think Bart Starr with both his parents being gone now, I think Bart Starr Jr.
would have been a great thing to have up there.
How do you, in your right, but I mean, we could go through about 100 people, that would be a good one.
No, no, no, Bart,
no, you start with Bart Starr.
Okay.
Who would top Bart Starr?
Well, if it was actually Bart Starr.
Well, yeah, I
know.
But I mean, now that both parents are gone and everything, I just thought this would not be there if it wasn't for Bart Starr.
You know, I would have added, like you guys do at the Hall of Fame, a speaker introduces another speaker that introduces the thing.
I would add one more speaker, kind of what Johnny's saying a little bit, because I think Jordyn Austin's awesome.
But I wish the speaker that would have introduced the speaker would have been, I'm Dr. Huntsger from Green Bay Medical College.
I don't think 14 million people know we have that.
I would have had something from the water and just fish.
I would have promoted the community more.
through somebody speaking.
You're not going to have Huntsinger introduce the draft choice.
I mean, that would be a little awkward, but I don't know.
I just, I thought it was great and I thought it was good.
I just, I talked to some people who watched it all and I'm like, what did you get out of what you saw on TV?
And they're like, well, hey, you know what?
No disrespect.
I've never heard of that guy you keep mentioning Huntsinger.
Oh, he started the coach.
That guy's big
time.
That's cause he doesn't get to do a pick.
I don't,
