Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

And here are your hosts, John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Good

Host (John Mino)

morning.

Happy Friday.

National Football League in Titletown, Green Bay.

I'll tell you what, folks.

We were there last night and it was incredible.

It was fun.

It was fun.

Different.

We were talking.

I wonder if this could be disappointing.

I don't think there's that many people.

Holy crap.

Boom.

Did they show up?

I mean, from all over the country, all over the world.

And you know what?

I give people credit.

I mean, like Miami Dolphin fans wearing their Jacksonville Jaguar.

I mean, it's like, wow.

That was that was something last night.

Co-Host

I mean, yeah, it was unique different never been to one of those Never go again.

Host (John Mino)

No, that's true.

I Ain't going back.

I gotta tell you some Mark Houston would come in later Belling sports medicine put together such a fantastic event at their place last night I give them all the credit in the world.

That was just incredible So food trucks for everything was

Co-Host

Right.

I mean, everything was

Host (John Mino)

great.

It was wonderful.

And the weather held and I'm just proud of, you know, us.

Co-Host

Yeah.

But yeah, I was in the 10th, but

Host (John Mino)

I'm

Co-Host

glad that third row, but it

Host (John Mino)

was fun.

But I'm telling you, people, you can't, I mean, Dom and I and Dom, we were talking about this.

I think 14 years we had the season take or Ted Thompson gave us a ticket for to host veterans.

And we're like, I at first we're like, oh, this is probably about twice.

the size of a packer crowd, and then it got, this is probably three times the size of a packer game day.

What would you think, Jim?

Well, they said 205, so that would be right, right?

Let me just walk around.

What did you feel?

At least twice.

Co-Host

Yeah.

Host (John Mino)

And maybe two and a half.

Co-Host

Again, my view was different.

I came in a different way.

You know I anybody that turned around and saw like that is a lot of people because I usually look at that parking lot and there's cars and tailgate parties And then you turn around you look at it, and it's just all people.

It was no cars.

Host (John Mino)

It was just a mass of humanity Yeah, it was ridiculous a lot of people but it was cool.

I was in a good one right not that drunk kind of crowd nope

Everybody was growing.

I mean it was it was it was really great.

Co-Host

There weren't even any beer stands in there.

Host (John Mino)

I didn't see any either Yeah, you didn't even see people walking around with beers too much, right?

Again, I stuck I stuck one in my hoodie so I could walk I took yeah, I'll be honest um Actually took two but otherwise I didn't see other people really drunk

Co-Host

Yeah, did you well again?

I was I didn't but

Host (John Mino)

you don't even know the type of crowd it was it was that rowdy kind of

Co-Host

You

Host (John Mino)

know, Packer Vikings game.

What's it like to

Host (Jim Schmidt)

be in the third row at the NFL

Co-Host

draft cocktail service?

It was just it's different.

It's but those aren't I it was really I was and I think it's because a couple things one is that first volume pay for the tickets.

Host (John Mino)

I say

Co-Host

that yeah, they

Host (John Mino)

didn't okay

I'm going to back up.

I'm going to do it.

When's the last time you actually paid for a ticket to anything?

Co-Host

I don't remember.

They did an event at the New Community Shelter.

The lady from New York was in charge of it.

She said, hey, look, are you guys going to the draft?

I'm like, yeah, when we live here, we're probably going to go.

And she goes, well, let me see what I can do.

And then she didn't call back.

We're like, hey, look, she tried.

She didn't call back.

And then today, Friday, so it was very late, Thursday, 11, 11.30 at night.

She was, hey, I got a couple tickets for you guys.

You want to go?

So we went and it was it was great.

I tell you what was weird.

This is so there was somebody in the front row and

Host (John Mino)

First I hate complimenting you on anything.

Mm-hmm.

That's a cool sweater Where'd you get that?

I'm serious

Co-Host

Pro

Host (John Mino)

shop.

Co-Host

Yeah

Host (John Mino)

yesterday.

No,

Co-Host

this is old.

Oh, yeah

dig this one out.

Host (John Mino)

There was actually, there's some cool swag out there.

I'm going to be on there.

I even compliment a couple of people on the Belvin thing last thing.

Where'd

Co-Host

you get that?

I'm still waiting till Monday.

Host (John Mino)

Yeah, me too.

But there's some really cool

Host (Jim Schmidt)

things

Host (John Mino)

out there right now.

Host (Jim Schmidt)

Yeah.

So I want to finish your story.

What was sad about front row?

Yeah.

Family.

Yes.

Family.

Co-Host

Yep.

Super nice.

And they kid wearing a suit and then the, um, had a football autograph.

I don't see who's autographing, but you know,

They turned it on, it was exciting.

The others was great, you know, just a little, because then some people came and said, I'm the second Rowan.

And then the person I was with, Chris, they were like, wow, who do you think they are?

I said, I don't know.

I said, that's awesome.

The whole family was there, three kids, and then the mom and dad.

And then Cleveland was up for their draft.

And right before Cleveland came, they'd take the kid away, and he was the make-a-wish kid.

Host (John Mino)

Oh, I saw that.

Yeah.

In the wheelchair.

Co-Host

Nope.

Wasn't him

Host (John Mino)

it was a

Co-Host

Cleveland hit his his make-a-wish was to introduce Somebody from Cleveland is his favorite team.

Oh, okay Anyway, and so then that was pretty cool because then after a lot of people are fist

Host (John Mino)

bumping on

Co-Host

and stuff.

So the one that you saw there was another one There was two that night.

I didn't

Host (John Mino)

okay.

I didn't see your guy.

I saw the kid in the wheelchair

Co-Host

after the pack of drafts.

So okay, anyway,

Host (John Mino)

but hey, I'm excited receiver man.

Thank you bring as many

weapons as possible

Co-Host

it it was it was it was funny though but boy do they boo can you hear that on TV how loud they boo Godel every time every time

Host (John Mino)

but he liked it yeah he does

Co-Host

yeah

Host (John Mino)

I was surprised remember I said every time I thought maybe green baby the one place he didn't get you were like I was like but

Co-Host

it's not it

in that theater though, it's not Green Bay.

I mean, they've got

Host (Jim Schmidt)

sections

Co-Host

carved out

Host (Jim Schmidt)

for

Co-Host

every team.

They wear, they really, really dress up to,

Host (Jim Schmidt)

you know.

Yeah, no

Co-Host

question.

So anyway,

Host (Jim Schmidt)

isn't that kind of interesting though that all these people come and then the one guy who's kind of in charge of the whole big thing gets booed for it.

Host (John Mino)

That should tell you how people

Host (Jim Schmidt)

feel about him,

Host (John Mino)

you know?

I mean, I'll be honest with it.

I mean, God bless you.

You were in the bowl.

We couldn't even get close.

I mean, could not even get.

close to it.

Co-Host

I text a friend of mine.

I'm like, where he goes, I'm behind you.

Host (John Mino)

Yeah.

And there's no way to get there.

I'm like, really?

I mean, I'm not I'm not exaggerating.

I'm into a million different events.

And this was this was different.

It was very different.

Co-Host

It was different, but you know and it's just a lot of energy and you know the the music I don't know what you thought of the music.

Host (John Mino)

Who was the guy Todd?

Who was saying that he was great, but who was that?

Do you know Todd?

Co-Host

I'll check.

Host (Jim Schmidt)

I'll look it up.

I mean,

Host (John Mino)

he's not like a big name, right?

Host (Jim Schmidt)

I was surprised.

I didn't

Host (John Mino)

know any big big names.

No, no, no, that was one of the surprising thing.

I mean, I would have thought it was be like, you know, Carrie Underwater, somebody.

They

Co-Host

did promote Brad Paisley.

You know, saying that he, you know, stick around

Host (John Mino)

type

Co-Host

thing.

But yeah, I thought

I don't know.

I just thought there would be it was it was good entertainment.

You know, he didn't Michael Jackson.

He just had a variety of music.

But I think they're

Host (Jim Schmidt)

bringing

Co-Host

somebody a little bit

Host (Jim Schmidt)

more known.

Stephen Wilson, Jr.

guitarist, little guitar.

Yeah, that's what his name is

Host (John Mino)

acoustically.

Host (Jim Schmidt)

Yep.

Yep.

Co-Host

And what was the band?

Who was it was brass?

It was a good band, but never heard of him.

Host (John Mino)

Yeah, I was a huge marquee name for the

Co-Host

Because I think they could afford it.

But it was a kind of down.

Host (John Mino)

Yeah.

I was surprised.

But I'll tell you what, the Black Hawk helicopters, four of them that flew over at the end of the National Anthem, came from the West Side.

And that was really cool, wasn't it, though?

Co-Host

Yes.

Well, I would have sent the jets because we were going to known for the jets.

I thought the

Host (John Mino)

helicopters were pretty cool.

They were.

OK.

I took pictures.

I thought was cool.

I did, too.

I put it on my Facebook.

I thought they were very good.

I mean, I got, I almost got

Host (Jim Schmidt)

Jim, I'm just going to go ahead and call you go ahead and order them for today.

Okay.

When they pick up the phone,

Unknown Speaker 1

how?

When the hell were the

Co-Host

jets?

Unknown Speaker 1

For a great a lot.

I was married in sleep in city.

We had a lot of jets.

When the hell were the

Co-Host

jets?

And it turned on those afterburners.

Unknown Speaker 1

They're so loud.

You take your god-blessed blackhawks and stick them on a sandal shine.

Those look cool.

Co-Host

I don't want to take anything away from them.

But in Madison, we have jets, too.

That's where they came from, so.

Anyway, yes, I thought that was nice.

That was a nice touch.

All

Host (John Mino)

right.

Vicky says it's Friday.

Let's go.

Hello, Vicky.

Vicky is like our favorite person.

Vicki, you're our second favorite person.

My favorite.

Vicki, you're second.

The lady last night, that was my bartender at the Bellen thing.

Oh, yeah.

Very quiet.

It was just, I just want to thank you for your morning radio show.

I listen every day and I really enjoy that.

And I gave her a $20 tip.

Did you?

I did.

Co-Host

Before she said

Host (John Mino)

that.

No, after she said that.

Okay.

I mean, so.

But that was just really nice of her to say

Co-Host

that.

So yesterday I didn't tell you the story

Host (John Mino)

I did I go now I'm gonna say one more thing I did ask somebody else or I didn't ask somebody else asked me a question mm-hmm True or false did Jim really burn his pet?

Co-Host

Yeah, you could say no you could say no to that because

Host (John Mino)

it was my sister's brother

Co-Host

Honest to God, we're

Host (John Mino)

sitting there.

I gotta ask you something.

I know yesterday was that

Co-Host

BS and thanks for doing the promo yesterday because I had to run out of here at 9 because I had to get over to the northern hotel because Frank Frank's gonna be on our show later We gave tours to people they just a lot of a lot of guests but people would stop in and give tours and the crystal ballroom where you guys were when that's where President Kennedy was and

Vince Lombardi.

Um, they had the Vince Lombardi guy there walking around.

Anyway, it was see a name drop or

Host (John Mino)

what?

Co-Host

No, no, I'm just saying that you guys were there for that.

But anyway,

Host (John Mino)

John Kennedy, the room was closed next to Kennedy.

Co-Host

The room was closed because, uh, Mrs. Patrick Mahomes mom was having a breakfast meeting for, um, wives and mothers of people being drafted.

Like that's, that's cool.

Host (Jim Schmidt)

That's

Co-Host

a niche.

Unknown Speaker 1

That's cool.

Co-Host

Like, like what's going to happen tonight?

This is what's gonna happen if he doesn't be she if he

Host (John Mino)

doesn't I said that was really cool at the mom of the guys the Packers drafted and she was like oh my god I love Green Bay.

Yeah, we've been here.

This is right awesome.

Hope yeah Wonderful the people are I thought that was cool.

Co-Host

Yeah, so anyway that was and it was pretty well attended and but even those mothers are younger than we are

Host (John Mino)

Okay, I'm gonna throw this out there Jim.

Yeah, they also had the grandmother the

Co-Host

grandmother So that

Host (John Mino)

the lady like it

Co-Host

is so that that was over at noon and we had a work kill one So then the lady comes down and they had on the tables these unbelievable bouquets of fresh flowers And she goes, you know, we're gonna fly back and I work for Mrs. Holmes and would you like one of these and I'm like sure so then

Of course, when I went home last night, I said, I know I've been really busy.

Todd's been working us a little overtime in the shelter.

So I just got these to kind of, you know, show that I'm sorry about not being home a lot.

Free flowers.

Yeah.

But I keep it to her.

She didn't know that.

After 30

Host (Jim Schmidt)

years, she

Co-Host

goes, you didn't buy

Host (Jim Schmidt)

these.

My lovely husband.

Let me

Co-Host

tell you

Host (Jim Schmidt)

about what Jim's like.

But anyway, he's

Co-Host

done.

And I gave her a gift basket.

Host (John Mino)

Look, I got some snacks.

You can watch a movie.

That was from

Co-Host

A Simple Life.

That's right.

Host (John Mino)

We got nice swag bags from Bill when last night.

Oh, nice.

Yeah.

Very nice way.

That was a great event.

Bill, when Mark Houston comes in, I'm just going to just say, wow, buddy.

You guys were like the central of the whole thing.

What a great event they put together at Bell and Sports Medicine last night.

And it was held upstairs of where they have their workout room, which is really cool.

Were they videotape?

They actually want me.

One of the doctors wants me.

They videotape people and they want to use me as like their instructor video.

Co-Host

Right.

Because if you don't work out, that's what you could look like.

Host (John Mino)

Wow.

Hey, happy Friday to you.

It is Penguin Day, hug of plumber day, lingerie day, okay?

Arbor day, telephone day, zucchini bread day, red hand society day.

Those ladies are great.

They are.

Have you ever been around them?

Oh, yeah.

Oh, they're crazy.

That's a great organization.

Renee Zellwinger is 56.

Joe Buck, 56.

Hank Azaria is 61.

John

Aging.

Right here in town last night.

It was amazing.

Anybody that was there, Texas, please.

Let us know what your, your feelings were on the whole thing.

I mean, God bless them.

I mean, like getting, I took the bus over at the old Menards, where the bell and hazard,

Jim

right?

John

Cross from the old shakies.

I'm

Jim

sounding older, Johnny.

Menards gone.

Shakies is gone.

I mean, I'm

John

good.

Let me tell you something

Jim

though.

But

John

I want to start up a restaurant.

Jim

I would say all night and 41.

Yeah.

John

I want to start a restaurant that'd be exactly like the old shakies because you know what?

That was fantastic.

Jim

But you know, the

John

bunch of lunch and the whole thing.

Jim

But what Jim?

Those buffets, John, they were awesome.

What did Red Lobster and do it?

What?

What did what did in Red Lobster?

John

A

Jim

buffet.

All you can eat.

I'm sure what it was.

Red Lobster, right?

What about it?

What?

did them in.

Why did they go under?

I have no idea.

They launched a special.

All you can eat.

Well, I forgot what it was.

Shrimp, I think.

Something like that.

They couldn't believe how much people ate.

Oh, OK.

They didn't price it.

Well, I would

John

have.

I would be like, hey, hey, hey, put that down.

That's enough.

Let's

Jim

go,

John

buddy.

Jim

Sometimes I would just, and Shaky's, I think people liked their pizza.

I think they loved the buffet.

I love the right.

John

Oh, absolutely.

Jim

That's what the

John

chicken

Jim

and the it was.

John

It was it was amazing.

Jim

It was

John

wonderful.

Jim

And those buffets aren't cheap anymore.

Have you been to?

Well, it's great company.

I

John

haven't.

I'm just going to say right now.

I know I haven't.

Jim

I don't go.

It's kind of a chain.

It's a young

John

couple.

Jim

You know, what's it?

What's like on Main Street, you know, right next to a PDQ car wash?

Don't know they're great people.

They give a lot of money to charity.

Okay.

I'll think about it Anyway, they have the buffet, but it's not that inexpensive.

It's Because it's it's got the chicken.

It's got the salad bar different pizzas.

I'll think about it

John

I would know what I love.

I'd love okay.

I live upstairs or a studio I would give anything if we had if this was next to us was like a restaurant that had a salad bar I would I could live at a salad bar every day.

Yeah, couldn't you I mean a good salad bar actually know the union hotel

which is a great place, you know, I mean, legendary 150 years or whatever, but they, for the big thing they had across the street the other night.

Oh yeah.

Okay.

They were in charge of like the salad bar part

Jim

with the relish trays and

John

things like

Jim

that.

Hot bacon.

John

Yeah.

And there's like so much more domini who worked at the union.

Yeah.

He was, they take that stuff serious.

I mean, even like the ham spreads and the different cheeses, that's

That's like real serious type of things.

And I think, is that in Wisconsin?

Is that a do I mean, I don't know.

I mean, I never paid attention when I lived in Arizona or Idaho or whatever.

But I mean, we take salad bar so serious

Jim

here.

We

John

do.

Jim

We do.

And it's, you can fill up on a salad bar.

You gotta be careful with that.

But we don't have to read the second one.

But no, not on a pizza wagon or Happy Joe's.

Is that, is that what it's called?

John

Tori, Tori, I'm just gonna call you out, Tori.

I think that's funny.

Hey, Tori, Tori.

Tori says I was at the oval office last night.

They had a great buffet Tori Got this one from William pizza wagon or happy Joe's

Jim

That's not what it's called.

John

It's happy Joe's has

Jim

well happy Joe's is great.

They got a great salad bar And yeah, we used to actually we used to go there every Friday happy Joe's what our kids were little

John

there's the first place I ever had BLT pizza

Jim

Pizza Ranch is in our area here's owned by a young couple and they'll do that on like Wednesdays it goes to the Boys and Girls Club or it goes to you know Salvation Army that is a very charitable company, but I When I was in that big brothers, you know program he liked to eat there, but again it cost

And it should cost money because there's a lot.

There's a lot of food in there, but that's a great place.

I've gotten really cheap in my old age.

Yes.

Is that weird?

You too, Jim?

No.

Well, I'm just computer.

I agree with John.

If I

John

got cheap, I don't have to ask.

Well, you bring your wife fresh flowers from from a job.

Things just seem so expensive.

Don't

Jim

I think they're more expensive.

I'll give you that

John

expensive.

Jim

But it's here.

I don't think you.

John

And I always thought, you know, my dad.

And your dad and our dad Todd's dad, they could open up their wallet and then have like $20 in their wallet.

You know what

Jim

I mean?

John

Yeah, right?

Yep.

Do you carry $20 your wallet?

Jim

Nope.

John

Do you?

Jim

I don't care.

I don't care wallet.

Um, this is what I think.

This is how I justify it.

I think if you're going to spend X amount a month, right?

Or whatever.

But I don't have any expenses anymore because my kids are gone.

Yeah.

So it doesn't, it's not a stressful to me.

My kid makes twice as much as I make

John

Brian says Green Bay Metro did a fantastic job with the buses

Jim

Let's tell Patty that because she was taking a little bit of heat remember when she was in here and we're like look because The communication between some of these silos wasn't working for her and she's like I didn't know

I thought they were doing this.

John

And that is not, I was talking to people last night that are very deeply involved with the draft.

And they were saying the same thing up until a few days ago, they still weren't even sure on some things, but it did seem

Jim

to

John

all come together.

Jim

So yesterday, Frank and probably agree with this.

There's some people at the Northland from Pittsburgh, you know, kind of coming in and checking it out.

And I said, so any concerns before you as well?

the layout because remember how that was such

an

Jim

issue for like months absolutely I'm like yeah get that squared away first because they want their store how do you say in the zone or out of this I forgot what he wanted because I think if you're in the zone you have to pay an extra commission right on your stuff so I think he wanted to be right out of the zone anyway he was talking about that anyway he thinks Green Bay is really

John Mino

Hey, thank you very much, welcome back!

It's a good look at Friday out there 44 degrees in Green Bay 46 in Appleton 44 in Oshkosh High today at 50 some showers in the forecast a national penguin day hug a plumber day lingerie day Arbor day telephone days zucchini bread day, which I'm a big fan of Red Hat Society Day.

Those ladies are awesome We got a text here.

I went to the draft for the noon opening yesterday planned

to ride free metro buses from a stop on 9th Street.

First three buses that stopped were at capacity.

When they got to us, we took Uber to the entrance, stayed till early evening, had a great time with awesome people, did use the metro bus to leave, great for Green Bay.

I heard Ubers were $200 last night, per ride.

Somebody help us, we need some people on the street type reporters.

Lisa, no disrespect to you.

Um, but we need some reporters that were in the trenches last night, how expensive things were or were not.

Hi,

Lisa

Lisa.

Hi.

How are you?

John Mino

Excellent.

How are you?

Lisa

I'm doing well.

John Mino

It's going on.

Lisa

Well, nothing compared to what's going on in Green Bay.

I mean.

Green Bay has got it this week.

It is all about the NFL draft.

Everything is about the NFL.

It's

Jim Schmidt

been that way for about a year.

But yeah, it really

John Mino

is.

Jim Schmidt

It's

John Mino

almost overwhelming in some ways.

Jim Schmidt

Like my wife said, living in Green Bay, you wouldn't know the Pope died.

So yeah, it's

Lisa

it's

Jim Schmidt

right next to me.

Lisa

But I will say that that the diocese.

did have a reaction to the Pope's death.

So, I mean, there was some reaction.

It just got buried.

Jim Schmidt

Page five.

Lisa

Yes.

Jim Schmidt

Saw it.

But yeah, it's a big deal, but they've done a good job.

I'm not going

John Mino

to be that guy.

Some people for whatever reason, they just want to have a bad attitude.

Jim Schmidt

It's

John Mino

like, come on, man.

Jim Schmidt

Yeah, but it was fun.

I mean, it was a lot.

It was

John Mino

great.

It was super.

But it's just, if there's so many people out there, if you're claustrophobic, kind of, it's almost like, hmm, wouldn't you agree with that, Jim?

Jim Schmidt

Yeah, there's a lot of people.

Lisa

Yeah.

I mean, 205,000 people was the official to count from yesterday from the NFL.

Oh, I didn't know

John Mino

that.

Really?

Lisa

Yes.

When did you get that?

I got that from the NFL one pass.

Yeah.

John Mino

Wow.

Okay.

Thank you for that.

Cause we were trying to estimate what that, what, how many were there?

Lisa

the quote-unquote maximum capacity for the NFL Draft Stage Theater area is 125,000.

And they reached maximum capacity, like at 620 less.

John Mino

Yeah, I put a thing on my Facebook where they had the big board up, we are closed down, nobody else, yeah.

Lisa

And so they were trying to get people into the Lambo Bowl, which makes sense.

And then they were able to open back up about an hour later and let more people

John Mino

in.

I mean, I was surprised when I left and I left before the Packers actually made their draft pick.

Um, cause I want to kind of beat the crud say free.

There's going to be a big, you know,

Jim Schmidt

after

John Mino

that, there's going to

Jim Schmidt

be, you know, and even on

John Mino

Ashland, there were signs basically saying, don't go to Lambo field.

Don't even just, no, don't, don't, don't go this way.

It's, it's over.

It's done.

Nobody else is allowed in anymore.

So yeah,

Jim Schmidt

it was it

John Mino

was insane in that

Jim Schmidt

part of the mass exit, but

John Mino

it was a what I don't understand.

At least it was a nice crowd.

Hey, Jim,

Jim Schmidt

if

John Mino

that's the best way to put it, it was just a nice crowd.

It wasn't a heavy drinker kind of let's get hammered and swear

Jim Schmidt

and well, there was a lot of like teenagers.

Yeah, like 16, 17.

Yeah, a lot of kids.

12

John Mino

year olds.

I thought that was great.

Yeah.

Jim Schmidt

That

Lisa

was fun.

Oh, yeah.

Definitely

John Mino

people with a clicker.

There is only 203,000.

We just have to make

Jim Schmidt

that number.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Lisa

That's what the NFL said.

205,000 people.

Okay.

But

Jim Schmidt

it is true that.

They really don't know because there was no.

John Mino

What official type of thing would you do

Jim Schmidt

in

John Mino

the in the theater?

They scan your tape.

Jim Schmidt

Did you

John Mino

see?

the snipers on top of

Sean Cable (meteorologist)

the

John Mino

legacy.

Yeah, they're up on top there.

Really?

Oh, yeah.

And the whole thing and both sides, you can see them standing on top of the roofs of actually cooler, cooler

Studio Announcer

lodge.

I think Nick actually posted a picture of it.

He goes, those are not like, yeah, those

Jim Schmidt

aren't weather vans.

No, no, that's cool.

Studio Announcer

Yeah.

Is it?

John Mino

I mean,

Jim Schmidt

it's kind of scary,

John Mino

right?

I mean, I'll tell you what, there was security to the maximum.

Jim Schmidt

Wasn't there though?

Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah.

Lisa

Yeah.

And the last thing

Jim Schmidt

they want is something.

Lisa

No, I mean, come

Jim Schmidt

on.

There were money that's in this thing.

Right.

Lisa.

Lisa

Yes.

John Mino

Talk to us.

Lisa

Oh, I could talk to you about so many things.

And you guys seem focused on the draft.

Um, but, you know, for new WISCO weekend this weekend, we're not focused on the draft.

Last week, we're focused really on.

superheroes, because Monday is Superhero Day, National Superhero Day.

So we're focusing our episode on everyday heroes and superheroes in Wisconsin.

The Red Cross is looking for nominations for their heroes, several different categories of hero that they're looking for, not just somebody who gives blood for the Red Cross, but maybe somebody who put together a

a drive for the community.

It's all about the everyday heroes.

Sean Cable (meteorologist)

So we've

Lisa

got that story.

We have a lot of everyday heroes throughout the area.

I mean, people do really good things here in Wisconsin.

We have that.

We have our cover story is Dean Robbins, who wrote a book on the 100 Wisconsin Idols.

So people who have inspired the state.

him and the world.

Um, let's see, what else do we have?

We have a story on the optimist club again.

John Mino

Hey, hey, Lisa,

Lisa

back up

John Mino

a little bit here.

Tell us again about this book.

Lisa

100.

Um, the 100 idols, the Wisconsin idols.

I didn't interview Dean, Terry Barr did, so I can't get really into the nitty gritty, but he basically took 100 people and his editors told him

Sean Cable (meteorologist)

he had to

Lisa

limit it to 100.

100 people throughout Wisconsin that have inspired the state, inspired the world, inspired him to do different things.

And it could be anything from an everyday hero.

who raises money for a charity to some sort of a celebrity that inspired.

Jim Schmidt

Betcha Liberace is in there.

No, he's not.

He's 104.

Lisa

Liberace was still relevant today.

No,

Jim Schmidt

he

Lisa

they're talking about who a flu.

Hey, hey, hey, Lisa.

I got my mom outside of this show.

He's not

Jim Schmidt

my mom.

My mom bought me this book when I was in high school, the 100 most influential people.

Just that that's the title of the book.

You know,

I mean, Christ is in there, Muhammad, the guy, the penicillin guy.

Anyway, if this is the hundred most influential people that influence, you know, it's not one lane, right?

It's the whole influential people that were there from here.

Yes.

Influencing music, entertainment.

He's in there.

Lisa

He's so overrated.

Well, he's in there.

Jim Schmidt

He's overrated.

Lisa

Won't you say, Lisa?

He was a great showman, but he's not relevant today because it's it's

Jim Schmidt

a lot of people in that book are dead, I'm sure.

Lisa

Yeah, but anybody under the age of let's say 40 really won't have the connection to Liberace as anybody over the age of 40, right?

The only reason I know Liberace so well is because my grandmother had a crush on him and watched everything she could see.

Really?

Bless her heart.

Bless her heart.

Oh, that's

Jim Schmidt

awesome.

Kind of a wasted crush, but yeah, okay.

Yeah,

Lisa

exactly.

Very lusted

Jim Schmidt

crush.

I think, no, I'm not going to say anything.

All right.

Well, that's cool.

So he's your, the interview is with the

Lisa

author on Sunday.

Hey, Alicia.

He's our cover story.

John Mino

Would you do me a favor?

Lisa

I will try.

John Mino

Would you hook up us with him?

I think that'd be great to talk to him.

That would be fun.

Lisa

You're going to have to go through Terry on that one.

John Mino

I would love to know.

I want to know who would be the number one person.

Lisa

Looking up on his book, you know, you can buy his book.

It's DeanRobbins.net is his website.

That much I can tell you.

John Mino

What do you think?

Lisa

Number one No,

John Mino

nobody knows Gaylord Nelson absolutely I say Bart star,

Lisa

you know, you know who's gonna be okay

If

Jim Schmidt

they go what they may go way way way back to explorers and Jim

Studio Announcer

would Jim would write a separate book

Jim Schmidt

a hundred four Who do you think that'd be fun that's gonna be fun.

All right.

Do you know Lisa?

Lisa

No, I don't know.

I wonder

Jim Schmidt

if he put him in order.

Lisa

I think it's like

Jim Schmidt

Barty.

I wonder if he put him in order if he just like, you know, just in general, general order, alphabetical order or something like that.

But I hope he put him in order.

Bart Starr is in the book.

He is.

But I don't know exactly where.

Studio Announcer

Because I'm looking at

Jim Schmidt

some of the people I mentioned.

And Barty's obviously in the book.

I hope it's not too skewed towards sports.

Lisa

Yeah.

Oh, I don't think it is.

I don't think it is.

John Mino

I mean he is he's in the book Hank Aaron

Studio Announcer

is

John Mino

yeah am

Jim Schmidt

I That's cool all right, so you've got that that's on Sunday talking to

Lisa

him

Well, that's Saturday and Sunday.

Newest weekend airs Saturdays at eight and Sundays at 11 on WSS and WGBW.

And then you can also pick it up on our websites and at civicmedia.us as well.

Studio Announcer

And then of course, on Sunday, we've got Lean Local.

What

Jim Schmidt

do you have

Studio Announcer

this week?

Lisa

Yes.

What are you got coming

Jim Schmidt

up?

Ours is all about water safety because it's coming.

I mean, doesn't

Lisa

feel like it today.

Jim Schmidt

So the first half is with a DNR warden who patrols the waters.

And pretty interesting.

on what he finds that's wrong with boats and people and it's

John Mino

amazing how many drunk people pilot boats

Jim Schmidt

and it's it is it's it's life preservers and it's just a lot lot and then we have another lady come on I do I do mention I don't really mention you John but I do reference you and she just talks about accidents that happen in pools she is the the

Park's director here in the city of Green Bay.

Sean Cable (meteorologist)

And we have

Jim Schmidt

three aquatic centers.

And I said, she teaches private lessons and group lessons.

And I said, I didn't, I didn't mention your name, but I said, I have a friend of mine that I have a morning show with.

So, um, I kind of threw her with the friend part.

And she said, um, I said, can I, if I buy him lessons, can you teach him how to swim?

She said in eight weeks, he won't drown.

It's like she could teach you to swim.

Eight

John Mino

weeks.

That's a long time.

Jim Schmidt

I don't think that's long at

John Mino

all.

Jim Schmidt

Well, I

John Mino

thought you were okay can be honest I thought you're gonna bring up where I got to get pulled out of the lazy River at Wisconsin that

Jim Schmidt

would happen again You won't be afraid of water.

John Mino

You will I'm not afraid of water Jim.

I've just had some bad experiences

Jim Schmidt

Anyway, so it's really interesting and she said young kids You know do you take them when they're like I took my kids like where they're still the diaper just floating around or do you teach them when they're three or four and

Is it too old?

It's very interesting

John Mino

on water safety.

Jim Schmidt

Hey,

John Mino

Lisa, can you stick around?

I want to talk to you more about that hundred.

The book.

Lisa

I'll try to talk to you about it.

I don't have a lot of information, but

John Mino

really that's Terry's thing is what she's saying.

Yeah, I know.

But I want to talk to you more about that.

Is that OK, Lisa?

OK.

Lisa Hale.

Lisa Hale

Hey, sometimes he says the little things where it's like I'm surprised.

We're talking about last night with time he left and we're here with Mark Houston.

It's like, you know, cause I left right before the Packers pick so I could watch on TV.

And I thought there'd be just a huge delusion of people.

And she goes, yeah, I did too.

It's like leaving right after communion.

It's like, you're such a Catholic.

It's like, I didn't think you were one of those guys that would leave that communion.

Jim

Oh, there were a lot of people that left after the Packers.

A lot.

So

Lisa Hale

do we have a Lisa Hale?

Lisa, you still there?

I'm here.

Okay.

We got cheese curd Nick coming out to give us a report of being at ground zero last night.

Okay.

Lisa Hale (caller)

Okay.

Lisa Hale

She's got Nick and he does every packer

Jim

game.

He's got his pulse is ear to the ground.

Yes.

Cheese Curd Nick

How did how did it go, brother?

It was slow.

It was slow to start.

It was very slow.

I know Jim came down there.

What time are you down there, Jim?

Jim

5 30.

Cheese Curd Nick

Yeah, it was a light switch about an hour after you left, dude.

Jim

Good.

All right.

Cheese Curd Nick

We got we got rocked.

Jim

Awesome,

Cheese Curd Nick

but we didn't like when we and you talked when you were down there.

It was it was very Snail ish very eternal ish and then

Jim

it was I

Cheese Curd Nick

was a little worried for you Yep, and then when they got to capacity About a half an hour after capacity We just gotten we got waves and waves of people good

I mean, did they

Lisa Hale

stop people?

And I'm Mark Houston's here too.

And we were at his event last night, which was fantastic.

But when I left, like I said, right before the Packers pick, and I'm driving down to Ashland, and there were signs up, you know, basically saying, don't even try to go to Lambeau Field right now.

So did they like shut it down, Nick?

Did they stop letting people in?

Cheese Curd Nick

They stopped letting people in but then they then I guess people left and then they started they reopened it You know they you know they were monitoring it, but they called it I think Fox 11 had it on their thing this morning as an ebb and flow after it initially got closed Okay, what's good about people had the people had to leave for people to come in you know right so

Jim

but what's good about that is that people still wanted to

be in that atmosphere.

So they went to like the stadium view or they went to Badger state, you know, they still want to be in that environment.

That's where you got

Cheese Curd Nick

your big influx of people.

And there's a lot of people, there's a lot of people that I was talking to yesterday that they were kind of doing the outside thing first and they're going to do the inside thing like today or tomorrow.

And then there's other people that I know that I talked to early on that we're kind of walking through.

Like there was a huge group of Cleveland Browns fans that were there like early on.

you know they said that they were going to try to do the draft experience inside yesterday and then maybe even a little bit today and then mill around and then mill around uh you know the outskirts you know later tomorrow and saturday

Jim

what what

Cheese Curd Nick

time

Jim

was stadium what time did you guys serve till

Cheese Curd Nick

uh i think we served uh we we quit cooking around

We cook quick cooking sandwiches, I think around quarter to 10, maybe 930 quarter to 10.

I think, uh, then that got burned up.

And then we, we did curds until I want to say 1115 or 1130.

Hey, Nick, I just, I,

Lisa Hale

and I know we were just kind of like walking around like tourist type things.

I didn't think it was a rowdy drunk kind of cry.

I thought it was a really well behaved type of crowd.

Cheese Curd Nick

They were.

They were there was a handful of them.

You know, as the night gets longer, you are going to get that.

But yeah, I would say if you compared the drunkness from a Packer game to like the draft, there was less people inebriated than right then at a game, you know, says

Jim

all which says a lot because there's two, three times the number of people for Packer.

Yeah.

But I think it was a great crowd.

Lisa Hale

Hey, Lisa, we're like, we're talking about this.

Obviously, we're, you know, right here in the epicenter of it.

What's like Oshkosh in those areas?

How are they looking at the draft?

Lisa Hale (caller)

Well, they're looking at the draft as hopefully a way to get some some people into our area as well to see the wonderful things happening in the Fox cities and in Oshkosh We've provided hotel rooms and things like that.

I know Appleton's doing a mini mile of music During the draft to give people things to do that what they're not it when they're not at the draft But I mean I'm not seeing it here like I would an EAA

Jim

Right.

Lisa Hale (caller)

But then again, yesterday when I got done with work, I went straight home and went straight to bed.

Lisa Hale

How many does the EAA bring in, Lisa?

Lisa Hale (caller)

EAA brings in hundreds of thousands of people.

Lisa Hale

That's right.

I mean, how many?

I wonder, it's got to be about this size.

Wouldn't you think?

Lisa Hale (caller)

I would.

Lisa Hale

A couple hundred thousand.

Lisa Hale (caller)

But, you know, a lot of them stay right there on EAA grounds.

Lisa Hale

Right.

Right.

Right.

Lisa Hale (caller)

Right.

It's not out there.

Yeah.

Lisa Hale

I mean, if somebody hasn't been to EAA, they would be shocked at how many people come into there.

Oh my God.

Mark Houston

Good.

Hey, Mark, read that.

Mark just looked it up.

I looked it up.

Two thousand twenty four six hundred and eighty six thousand people.

Cheese Curd Nick

Wow.

So if you look, if you guys look at what happened yesterday, they're saying that there was two hundred and five thousand in attendance yesterday.

Mark Houston

Right.

So that's six

Cheese Curd Nick

eighty six.

But EAA brings in six

Mark Houston

hundred thousand.

That's probably seven days.

Right.

But

Lisa Hale (caller)

still, I mean, that's a lot of people

Cheese Curd Nick

that

Lisa Hale (caller)

are brought in.

Cheese Curd Nick

So right, right.

It's a lot of it's a lot of people even for Green Bay.

You know, you're looking at double.

If you if you look at how they're presenting that you're looking at 200,000 people, that's double the population of Green Bay in that footprint.

Lisa Hale (caller)

Exactly.

Cheese Curd Nick

And

Lisa Hale (caller)

that's one of

Cheese Curd Nick

the

Lisa Hale (caller)

things that that the commissioner said, you know, Green Bay has a population of one hundred and seven thousand people or give or take.

And.

The capacity for the NFL Draft Theater is 125,000.

So when they shut down, they had all of the Green Bay population plus in that area.

Cheese Curd Nick

Yeah.

We served yesterday.

We had 1,945 tickets and we sold 3,300 items.

Wow.

Lisa Hale (caller)

That's a lot of items.

Cheese Curd Nick

That's all the items.

Lisa Hale (guest/mention)

Hey, thank you very much!

Todd (host)

Welcome back!

Our number two minor the mayor 97.9 FM WGBW 96.5 FM WISS coming your way in Appleton and Oshkosh Brewers on WISS tonight at 640 taking on the St.

Louis Cardinals.

I was a great rivalry.

Special thanks to Lisa Hale for joining us.

Nick's still on there, Todd.

Nick, who was at Stadium View last night, doing his cheese curds and the whole thing.

It was great.

And now we're with Mark Hughes in Bell and Sports Medicine.

And I'm just, I'm not gonna blow smoke up your butt here, Mark, but I'm very honored that Dominic and I were invited to your event last night.

And it was, it was fantastic.

You guys, I mean, for being right there, what a nice event you put on.

And I was telling Jim first thing I walked into.

You can't believe this brisket I had last night.

This brisket was unbelievable.

That was really cool.

You guys put together a great event, and the cool part, Jim, is I've never been, I mean, I'm a patient of theirs, you know, with whatever, but I had never been to the upstairs.

They get an unbelievable workout facility that would be like an NFL workout room with all the cameras to video everything you do.

That's really cool, Mark.

We don't talk about that enough.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Yeah, we'll probably have to come back and talk about it another time.

I will tell you, I just left that building because I stayed overnight there.

You slept there, huh?

I slept there.

No one had to be back here, so.

But I'll tell you, credit to the entire, our staff.

They have, they put on a great event.

We have an event still in the parking lot the next two days.

Yeah, how?

A lot of vendors out there, but, and then that floor, that was, we got everything cleaned up last night, out of there by midnight.

And our maintenance guys, the floor is up and by 6.30 when I left, it's,

We can see turf again.

So, you know, it was a, it was a great, I think it's a great way to give back to the community.

You know, we have one good shot at this.

Yeah.

We don't have experience.

I embrace

Todd (host)

it, man.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Like you said, you've just had other people on.

Take advantage of it.

Absolutely.

Enjoy the time.

It's part of the cool part about living here.

There's going to be some things we all probably did wrong.

And there's going to be some things we said, man, we knocked that out of the park.

I thought you guys did, Mark.

No BS.

Get a

Todd (host)

quick text here.

Can I add a birthday wish today to Brooklyn Tremble, Love, Mom, Dad, Oakley, and Colt?

Man, are those ever cool names?

The whole thing.

Brooklyn, that's a cool name.

Jim (contributor)

Love that name.

Mom's a cool name.

No, Mom.

Todd (host)

Brooklyn, Oakley, and Colt are the names that's incredible.

And the person who sent it in is Gretchen from Butternut.

Okay, you got cooler names you're from.

Yeah, Todd, what's going on here?

Jim (contributor)

Somebody go buy that book.

How do

Todd (host)

you have such cool names people?

Brooklyn,

Jim (contributor)

Oakley, and

Todd (host)

Colt.

Wow.

I wish I was Colt.

Call me Colt today.

Colt.

Call me Colt.

Remember Colt McCoy, the quarterback?

Call me Colt

Jim (contributor)

today.

That's too cool for you.

Todd (host)

Wow.

Jim (contributor)

Todd.

Oakley, I'll take Oakley.

Todd.

Brooklyn, that's happening.

Todd.

Yes.

Is Colt too cool for me?

Yes.

Todd (host)

Todd is

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

the most brutally honest person.

I've been this week, haven't I?

I have been this week.

I apologize to both of you.

It's been a long week though.

I don't know if it's because of the anticipation of the

Jim (contributor)

draft or because we've been a

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

little OT.

That was just day one.

We've

Todd (host)

got

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

two more

Todd (host)

days.

Hey, I got an event today.

That's gonna be pretty cool though.

Over at Heritage Hill, we're doing that.

People, you're invited.

I want to invite people over there at Heritage Hill today.

We're doing a little seminar or whatever you want to call it, a presentation for Jerry Vinisi.

to try to get him into the NFL Hall of Fame, or Japanese, try to get him in the NFL Hall of Fame.

He drafted 13 Green Bay Packers that are Hall of Famers, 13.

And we're trying to bring awareness to it with the NFL being here.

We're, we're, we're, okay, Brian.

You know who's right on today is Brian.

Oh, Brian's.

I was so snarky.

Brian had his, oh, it's,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

mine was more of a

Todd (host)

herb.

Really?

Okay.

No, I'm not.

I do.

No, I'm not, Brian.

You know what I am?

I'm a cult.

Shout out to cheese curd, Nick.

After a number of large adult beverages, those cheese curds were just what I needed.

I agree, Mike.

Yeah.

Man, is there?

Yeah.

By the way, by the way, Uber drivers made a lot of money last night, says Mike.

I heard there were 200.

Well, actually the lady that drove the bus at your place said, folks, you don't want to miss the bus because the Ubers are $200 right now in this area.

Did you get that too?

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

No.

We had our last bus, I think, roll out at 11.30.

And credit to the bus.

I mean, I tell you what, everyone's done a great job.

And we were just saying off the air of it was a very good environment to be in last night.

It really was.

It was cool.

We did not see a lot of drunks around.

I didn't see any.

Other than me?

Out of control people.

I get you're going to have some.

And I think people I think a lot of people did disperse after the Packers right and that probably helped out but It was very it was a very well run event by the NFL and no question And I

Jim (contributor)

think people maybe started with pricing, you know six months ago or whatever did a lot of chatter, but I paid $80 You know, you look at that for I think I was there what seven six hours probably, you know what that's not that's not a lot 15 bucks an hour

parking tickets down here for $22.

So I mean,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

I thought it

Jim (contributor)

was a good deal.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Yeah.

I mean, it was, uh, honestly, I think, um, I think the biggest thing we have to remember is it was, it's the one time shot.

I just don't see, I mean, nothing against Packers NFL.

I just don't see it coming back anytime soon.

It would be awesome.

So, but I think for what everyone kind of came together and planned what you felt like he had to do.

Um, some people talk, some people didn't.

Um, you know, it's where the

Todd (host)

mark, it's like being there.

I mean, it was over.

I mean, it was, the crowd was, whoa.

And then when I got home to watch the Packer pick and then you see the overhead shots of, of the, where you were, it's like, holy crap.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

That's even bigger than I experienced.

I think to give them credit to, I think that's another thing, you know, people talked about is the, the whole area is so big just to go in.

and check out what we call the title town park area where the turf is.

There's enough.

of activities going on right there, you could probably spend half a day.

Todd (host)

I thought the coolest thing of the entire event, other than your event, other than that brisket, other than that, the coolest part when we, Dominic

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

and I, Thank you to Minzo's on that one.

Yeah.

Todd (host)

We walked up to the top of, and I'd never been there before.

I'd never walked up Aaron's Hill.

Yeah.

And people were sitting on the hillside with the big screen watch.

It's like, that was the best place to be was sitting on that hill watching.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

And I give this credit to the Packers.

They've done some movies during the summertime.

I have been told,

You could, you know, grab the blanket, grab your family on a Friday night.

That is, and they put up one of those very good screens with LEDs.

Boy, I tell you what, that's a great opportunity.

Todd (host)

Okay, I'm gonna be honest with you, that's a heck of a claim.

That's how,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

have you climbed up there?

That

Todd (host)

we're killing us a little bit, John.

Oh, goodness.

Jim (contributor)

Look on tubing there.

Have you

Todd (host)

but I mean that's I that's a

Jim (contributor)

heck of a hill.

Oh, yeah, that's and that's like mark said that's great.

You

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

don't realize it's about halfway up.

It's like holy crap So, uh We didn't go it was last year first game of the year.

My wife was gone and I brought my son up and We we just kind of want we have a few people tailgating and you know what great place to watch flyover.

Oh Because you can

Todd (host)

helicopters like you

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

weren't those

Todd (host)

awesome.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Yeah, Jim

Todd (host)

complain Jim's the only person that's complaining

Jim (contributor)

I like the F-14s, but I thought that was nice.

I thought it was nice.

Yeah, I didn't really complain.

I just said that was nice.

That's all I

Todd (host)

said.

No, you didn't.

He said, what do you mean that was nice?

Because there weren't

Jim (contributor)

jets,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Jim.

Jim (contributor)

I said, he said, what would you have

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

done

Jim (contributor)

different?

I said, I may have called in the jets.

Todd (host)

Did he complain yesterday or no?

Well, he actually gave me a phone number to call.

He wanted to make

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

a. You know what?

Maybe he's saving it.

Can you, can you, well, you think it's going to do a fly over tonight again?

Todd (host)

That'd

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

be nice.

I would.

They have some of those draws he had flying around those jets flying over that area.

Holy cow.

But that's awesome.

We always have flyovers.

You think they would have come

Jim (contributor)

lower?

I would do the same thing I would do for the game.

Jim,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

call some people.

Let's see when we get a fly over tonight.

Yeah, let's see how much pull you have.

Thank you, Todd.

Todd (host)

Getting Roger Goodell on the line.

Roger, Roger.

Everybody, everybody.

It's your buddy Jim.

Jim (contributor)

Pay for that.

So I would I just think I would it was great.

The helicopters were great.

I was just just chills.

Todd (host)

Why okay, let me ask you something Why don't you call?

Okay, so I love it correct me if I'm wrong what?

Yes, or no is Jerry Jones sleeping about 200 yards somewhere.

We're sitting right now.

Jim (contributor)

No, he's in Dallas They showed it last night.

Oh,

Todd (host)

I thought he was here in Green

Jim (contributor)

Bay.

No, I Showed

Todd (host)

him in the in the

Jim (contributor)

war

Todd (host)

room in Dallas.

Oh, I thought it was in Green Bay

Jim (contributor)

I don't know.

Todd (host)

But what I'm saying is you were in Jerry Jones private box.

He literally made you mixed drinks or whatever

Jim (contributor)

Yes,

Todd (host)

why don't you call him invite him into our studio for the

Jim (contributor)

Super Bowl?

Todd (host)

Yes

Jim (contributor)

for the Super Bowl.

Yes to underscore that too.

So yeah,

Todd (host)

why don't you bring him in here?

Jim (contributor)

I don't I don't know.

He's pointing like he's right the Northland.

He's not the Northland.

Whatever

Todd (host)

Mark Houston Bellensports medicine just explain the event you guys put on last night And I will be honest with you.

You were like that one-legged man and a

Ash kicking contest you're on your phone cut the bus is

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

and

Todd (host)

we're trying this was funny Jim So we're driving over or on the bus.

It took us what 40 minutes?

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Yeah, there's we did have there was an accident.

There's an accident So

Todd (host)

the driver of the bus of Jim's it shows Bellin medicine told me I have to stay on this rock cuz he was trying to read right and the poor cop just goes lady Do what you gotta do.

It was like he was so stressed out with like a thousand cars in line.

He goes.

He's one of those people that

And he was just like, lady, just do what you

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

gotta

Todd (host)

do.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

No, it was, you know, it was a great opportunity to have some of our partners from businesses and schools, communities, some of our own leaders just come together.

But we pulled it.

You guys had one of one of our organizers out in the parking lot.

We have vendors that are doing things out in the parking lot, trying to give food back.

And, and then there's a whole bunch of more vendors.

That's the food side.

And then we also have more vendor selling stuff on a tent.

We had Jerry Kramer there.

YMCA was there doing activities.

Boys and Girls Club?

Boys and Girls Club.

I think when we looked at the whole thing, this wasn't just about one thing.

It was how do we use our perimeter and say, how do we give back the community?

How do we say thank you?

And yes, I'd still encourage people.

All day from 12 to 7 a.m.

Todd (host)

I will say this.

I'm not going back.

Okay, just because you know what I mean?

It's like an experience and it was awesome.

It was great But it almost you almost have to have a second day because like last night was so you know drinking of a fire hose type thing I don't think he had a chance to appreciate it last night So today would be a great day to get a better lay of the

Jim (contributor)

land where you agreed you yeah, I want to go I'm gonna I'm going tomorrow.

I'm back.

Okay.

I'm taking today off But we got a lot of stuff to do today, right?

We got that booyah thing and then there's that

tailgate party with the super fan fest, but I'm going with my brother tomorrow, but I'm taking

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

so I'm

Jim (contributor)

gonna go to your I'm gonna definitely go to that I'm gonna support

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

and tomorrow I will tell you I'm here and the weather is gonna be perfect It is gonna be a little bit cooler But I tell you what I think tomorrow is gonna be the day to come as a family right to wander your kids down Taking the activities hang out for two hours.

It costs you nothing totally agree.

I

Jim (contributor)

think some people are leaving

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

Correct.

I think I think your die hard is gonna be out of there.

They make

come tonight tomorrow or last night tonight.

And then I think there's going to be a lot of families coming out there.

I think it's just going to be a great opportunity.

Todd (host)

And I will say this, go up on top of that Aaron's Hill

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

just to see the view of the whole thing.

But the NFL has got so many of these little things.

You can check out Super Bowl rings.

You can check out jerseys.

You can check out so many of these things.

And all you got to do is download that app.

Todd (host)

Hey,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

the

Todd (host)

police officer last night, when I did the thing, he goes, I go, I'm so proud.

Because I said, is this?

There's like nine different levels of security.

Okay.

I go, did I do this for you?

He goes, I'm very proud of you.

I go, really?

He goes, you know, you bro, I didn't know you know how to use technology.

It's like,

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

okay.

You know what?

If you take a look at another, I think the other thing download the app and just familiar, familiarize it yourself with it.

Because if you get on that app, it tells you a lot, you know, from autograph sessions and we had a lot of people saying, I'm just going in for an

Todd (host)

autograph.

Okay.

Mark Hughes (interviewee)

I couldn't find the panini tent because Alec Ingold

Todd (host)

was doing an autograph thing.

This is...

Mark Houston

Sports Medicine here, got a text here.

Paninis are right by the stadium.

That's where Alec Ingold was last night.

I wanted to see Alec.

Todd (Co-host)

Alec was

Mark Houston

doing an autograph thing.

Todd (Co-host)

Did you see him?

No, I didn't, but I saw that map where that's

Mark Houston

right by the stadium.

Todd (Co-host)

Yeah,

Mark Houston

I

Todd (Co-host)

think

John (Co-host)

it

Todd (Co-host)

was

John (Co-host)

pretty

Todd (Co-host)

close too.

I

Mark Houston

don't understand maps.

I can't read.

I'm like the kids are my rack that don't have maps.

Just being honest.

Mark Houston, Bell and Sports Medicine here, hosted a phenomenal event last night.

Mark.

It's gotta be pretty cool when you think about it.

I actually thought that last night sitting in your place It's an amazing complex.

It really truly is.

I mean it stayed in the yard, but

When you think about it, I mean, there's a lot of cities in the world and you're right there next to Lambeau Field and the National Football League and you guys are doing it.

It's sometimes I think we need to step back and appreciate kind of what we have

John (Co-host)

here.

John, wouldn't you agree?

Yeah, and you know, I'm honestly, I'm blessed of just the way we kind of come in.

It's Brookwood Drive, Paralyze, Paralyze Lombardi and I can drive in and see the Lambeau

Radio Announcer

Field.

We

John (Co-host)

can see the one of the signs and.

you do have to catch yourself, pinch yourself and say, man, I've got it pretty good.

And we all do.

I mean, I think it's just like you said, now with what they have then titled to on district, that even wintertime, it's not a game day.

Take your kids over to the atrium, let them just run around that floor.

I've done it with my son.

You know, it's like, there's a lot of pretty cool things we have up here.

I don't

Mark Houston

know if we appreciate it

John (Co-host)

as much as we should.

Yeah.

And you know, I suppose everyone does.

It doesn't matter where you are in whatever town, but it's some great opportunities.

You know, and it's

Again, this is just a it's just a fun thing.

It's amazing what's what's been here just for one day one.

We got two more days and to see how it goes.

And but I think the you know, it would have been a whole different thing if you said, hey, it's twenty dollars person to get in.

Boy, that that's going to rub some people wrong so that you can go in.

It's free.

Now, yeah, do you have to park?

Yes.

Do you have to buy food and going to spend some money?

But it should be a great time.

Todd (Co-host)

Absolutely.

But you don't have to.

John (Co-host)

You don't have to know that you're right.

I mean you can and you can take the shuttles.

There are shuttles.

There's that there's opportunities

Mark Houston

I I would I'll tell you I mean I'll tell you something and when we were driving out all those neighborhoods it did it seemed like a packer game because everybody's like tailgating and then you know the little fire pits outside but all those yards were filled with cars I will say that but with that being said the last thing in the world I would do would be to get into my car and drive around that area trying to find a parking place it's like take a shuttle

Wouldn't you agree?

John (Co-host)

Yeah, there was, I drove in yesterday, I had a meeting, so I was there at seven.

I would say at seven.

It was three.

Seven in the morning.

So I just left there at 6.30 to come to the station.

They're probably two to three blocks out already from our clinic.

Todd (Co-host)

Yeah.

But I think a lot of people just drove down earlier and found a place and just talked to the guy and said, look.

Mark Houston

But you do not, like, whenever time we pulled up last night.

I don't know, five o'clock.

It's like you would not want to be driving a car

John (Co-host)

for the first time.

Right.

Todd (Co-host)

No,

John (Co-host)

I agree with that.

But I mean, overall, I mean, everyone's going to couldn't nitpick, but I'll tell you what, we love the event that we had.

I love what the community kind of came around and did on this.

And some people said, hey, I have no desire to come up and do those things.

But I think it's also a day of events.

I don't

Todd (Co-host)

want to be dipping down.

I just want to say that with all the hype and being there.

It's really not the most exciting event.

John (Co-host)

Well,

Todd (Co-host)

it's not like going to a Stones concert

John (Co-host)

or something.

I agree.

Sit and wait,

Todd (Co-host)

and then

John (Co-host)

sit and wait.

Right.

Todd (Co-host)

But the people are friendly, like we talked about.

They're families.

We talked to people next to us.

But it's not like a concert or a game.

Correct.

John (Co-host)

Like basketball.

They're not entertaining you between the picks.

Now, you have to entertain yourself

Todd (Co-host)

kind of.

Who

Mark Houston

sang the national anthem?

John (Co-host)

You know what?

Someone asked me that.

I do not know.

I never heard of them.

Mark Houston

I mean, it's great.

It's kind of a cool.

Style I get but I didn't know that I would have assumed it would have been like somebody huge And I thought maybe

John (Co-host)

I thought they were gonna call you John.

Mark Houston

I know they actually did I said I was busy

Todd (Co-host)

But you know

Mark Houston

you

Todd (Co-host)

Just I just want to say and that was great.

I'm glad it's here and I'm glad everybody was there But it just isn't a deal fighter.

Mark Houston

I agree.

It's

Civic Media Representative

it's more than Wilson jr.

By the way again,

Mark Houston

but he country a little

Civic Media Representative

bit probably I don't

Mark Houston

know.

Yeah, I'm not sure it was one of those things to to be at and say I was there, right?

You know versus oh my god It was the greatest concert I ever heard of the greatest whatever whatever

Todd (Co-host)

tell me about it.

Well, it was kind of

John (Co-host)

I agree But and and I the rumor was that maybe you'll be flying the jets John

Me?

Yeah.

They talked to me about that.

Did they

Mark Houston

ask you about that?

Did

John (Co-host)

you know who

Mark Houston

I want to be?

You want to know the role I wish I could play?

I want to be one of those snipers on top of Kohler Lodge.

Todd, there's snipers up there.

John (Co-host)

I know.

I will tell you that we are very well protected, not just from Green Bay, not just from Brown County Sheriff, not just from State Patrol, everyone.

They have been great guys and gals to work with and did an amazing job.

The presence is there, but it's not that I'd worried I bought it.

Todd (Co-host)

No.

John (Co-host)

Yeah.

But yeah, some of those guys, they come around golf carts with five guys on a golf cart.

Yeah.

Todd (Co-host)

Yeah.

That's great when you walk through and the dog, we walk past the dog and like the guy, your dog, yeah, I don't know.

What's the sniffing for explosives?

Yeah.

Everyone wasn't like for weed.

It is a secure environment.

You will

Mark Houston

never see more law enforcement anywhere than around Lambeau field right now.

John (Co-host)

Is

Mark Houston

that

John (Co-host)

true, Mark?

And they don't come around once.

I'm almost guessing they come around four or five times in every day.

I mean, they're very professional.

It's they stayed under the

Todd (Co-host)

radar.

Wow.

Wow.

I thought for sure it was going to be something else, but you know, the VIP test exposes.

Mark Houston

So, Mark, what's going on for you guys for the rest of the draft?

John (Co-host)

Like we said, we've got 12 o'clock till seven o'clock tonight.

Those vendors are we've got a lot of food vendors.

We got vendors selling stuff in the parking

Radio Announcer

lot.

We

John (Co-host)

have YMCA, big brothers, big sisters.

YMCA, bring your kids over, play some games.

Big brother, check out their airs.

Frank Hermans (interviewee)

It's more than just talk.

It's about connecting with the community.

This is Mino and the Mayor.

Now here's John Minow and Jim Schmidt.

Jim Schmidt

We're looking Friday morning, 97.9 FM WGBW 98.3 96.5 FM WISS in Appleton and Oshkosh and of course the Civic Media app worldwide.

44 degrees in Green Bay, 46 in Appleton, 44 in Oshkosh.

Forecast cloudy with some showers today, high of 50 on National Penguin Day, Hugga Plumber Day, lingerie day, which ironically

Somebody in our studio is wearing today to honor that.

Arbor Day, Telephone Day, Zucchini Bread Day, Red Hat Society Day, and the Brewers taking on the St.

Louis Cardinals.

640 NWISS tonight.

Frank?

I'm not gonna say who's wearing the lingerie.

John Minow

Let's just say I have a nice black sleek.

Wow.

Underneath this, markedly lamblob.

I apologize you have to sit next to this.

I'm good a little slippery as I'm sitting in this seat right now.

Jim Schmidt

Little slippery.

Can I be honest with you?

So am I.

I'm not joking about this.

I'm not joking about these.

I'm wearing my like biker short underwear today.

John Minow

Oh, yeah,

Jim Schmidt

and they are they're like slippery.

You got after notch my belt tighter.

Isn't that the truth?

It is.

That's right.

Remember that day?

I told you I was at festival and they started dropping said my biker short.

Maybe I shouldn't even talk about this.

John Minow

That's

Jim Schmidt

because you have no.

John Minow

Let's skip a move on.

But you got to get you got to get it over that those.

I

Jim Schmidt

was going to say something with the picture up.

In the break Jim and I how much weight have both of I both of us lost Todd because that was a ton.

Co-host

That was a ton.

I bet that was

Jim Schmidt

before

Co-host

we started the first day before we started 15 years

Jim Schmidt

ago.

What do you guys think?

Co-host

15

John Minow

months ago.

How much how much weight do you think we've

Radio Announcer

both got from that picture?

John Minow

I'm gonna go 13 to 15.

Radio Announcer

Yeah, you're exactly

John Minow

right.

Radio Announcer

What about you Jim?

Where are you at?

Seriously?

Cause you've lost a lot of weight.

Cause I think I was

Jim Schmidt

234.

Wasn't I Todd?

Do we have something

Co-host

like that

Jim Schmidt

right now?

I'm 218.

Ooh.

From a

Co-host

linebacker to a

Radio Announcer

wide

Co-host

receiver.

I don't know where I was, but tailback tailback.

Radio Announcer

What are you

Co-host

down to now?

I'm under.

Yeah.

It just doesn't work.

Radio Announcer

You're under what?

Co-host

But I'm way under

Guest

200.

I'll never go to 200 again.

Ever.

Co-host

I will

Guest

never ever be in that picture.

Oh, I don't know.

Wasn't it 217 to 18?

Co-host

Really?

Guest

And you want 200 now?

Co-host

Congrats.

Guest

No, tell the truth.

189.

Wow slot receiver Danny

Co-host

amando after going to the draft last night though That's unbelievable.

Jim Schmidt

Hey, I gotta say something so when we're walking over from your place over to the thing I go Tom look at that guy how big is okay?

And then we're sitting there.

It's like that's the guy he was driving to defense man people

People don't understand how big these human beings

Guest

are

Jim Schmidt

in the national football league.

I mean, you're a big guy, Frank.

But these guys, I mean, this

Co-host

guy was like six, seven, three-oh.

These tackles and linemen.

Oh my God, are they huge?

Big and they can move.

Wow.

But that guy that we drafted, he's not that big, is he?

John Minow

Six foot, 198 pounds, I believe.

The wide receiver.

Sleek.

So if I lost 20 pounds, I'd be here.

You could do it.

And gain six inches.

You know what looks huge?

I saw Sean Jones interview.

He's six, seven.

Oh, yeah, that's huge.

Yeah, you

Co-host

want that height?

He still looks

Jim Schmidt

big.

I thought that was cool.

I thought I'd be able to just kind of walk wherever I wanted to last night because I wanted to see James Jones who used to do our radio.

You remember?

Yeah.

You sit with Murphy and the boys.

And by being secure, I mean, you couldn't get.

You can't.

You can't get.

I just want to tell people what you see on TV ain't going to be what you're going to experience.

Cause that one area where you work, cause you're, you know, you page your way in or whatever, whatever.

I mean, anything.

I got whatever.

But it's like, you're going to be on the periphery kind of and you're not going to be up there by Roger Goodell.

Cause I want to go see James Jones was a great friend of mine.

But I thought that was great.

They had all those packers

Co-host

up there.

Didn't you?

Yeah.

That was very cool.

Yeah.

It's awesome.

It's awesome.

Just have a lot of those legends back.

Yeah.

I thought that was neat.

And there's, I mean.

Yeah, I mean, they're

John Minow

my wife's judging everybody.

What

Co-host

do you mean?

Yeah.

John Minow

Wow, Clay put on some weight.

Co-host

Yeah, everybody.

John Minow

Holy cow.

They do

Guest

what she

John Minow

said about me.

Well, she didn't see you.

OK.

I'm going to show her that picture.

She judged me?

Be

Guest

honest.

I don't know if

John Minow

she judged

Jim Schmidt

you.

OK.

She's a good kid.

She's a good kid.

Frank is here in

John Minow

the house.

She judges me.

I'm right off.

OK,

Jim Schmidt

so you're OK.

I'm coming, Lambo.

I'm going to turn this over to Jim.

I'm going

Co-host

to turn this over to you while he's dressed like this.

While he's had a couple busy days, you got a full day yesterday and then today again?

John Minow

Yep.

Yep.

You know, I didn't think I'd do anything this week with the draft.

Right.

No shows with the phone.

The phone started ringing.

People started asking I wrote a show years ago called the Heritage Trail Curly Lambo with Cliff Crystal and I played Curly Lambo So the Northland Hotel called me yesterday.

I would never know you're way too big

Jim Schmidt

Curly Lambo

John Minow

was six foot.

He was not six foot 200 pounds.

No, that's what he says.

Jim Schmidt

Okay,

John Minow

it's what he says.

I don't know what I've been

Jim Schmidt

involved in this yeah work on my lifetime.

Yeah, nobody

who says they're six feet tall is

Jim Santel

six feet tall

Jim Schmidt

because if they were legitimately six

Jim Santel

feet tall they'd

Jim Schmidt

say they were six one or six two okay okay so the guy is five ten and a half

John Minow

and he says they're six feet yeah true or false true true that is truth truth yeah I am I'm I'm six three and two fifty so I'm a little bit bigger than Curly but you know Curly Lambert was a lot of the life character he pioneered the the forward pass you know and he had a tumultuous relationship with Johnny Blood and I just wanted to bring that

I don't know why I'm talking like this.

I don't either.

Frank Hermans (interviewee)

That's

John Minow

why

Jim Santel

it sounds

John Minow

like the 1920s radio

Frank Hermans (interviewee)

voice.

He grew up three blocks away from here.

He was on Irwin Avenue.

John Minow

Calliwirtz owns the house right now.

He was a hometown kid and made it 1919 pack.

They say John Heisman invented the forward pass, but he pioneered the forward pass.

Curly Lambeau.

He was a prolific passer from 1919 to 1921.

or 23, then he became the head coach.

So you played that part.

Do you mind if I correct you?

I

Co-host

correct me.

Tell me what you say.

And then the Northland called you and said, would you be a tour guide?

Yes.

And then Paul, who did he play?

Johnny Blood.

Okay, I heard you with that accent.

You did use that accent.

John Minow

I did.

I use that accent.

Where's that from?

It's called Mid-Atlantic.

Mid-Atlantic.

Radio Announcer

Well,

John Minow

all the Hollywood people talk like that.

That's

Radio Announcer

correct.

And we'll tell you another

John Minow

thing.

Come on,

Co-host

chum.

And I was listening to your tour.

They asked me to give tours because I know a little bit about that place.

I learned some stuff from you.

You did.

Did you ever, like I said to that one, is that true?

He kind of makes it up as he goes along.

That's right.

I'm a storyteller.

Yes,

Jim Schmidt

that's what I am.

Co-host

Anyway, it was great.

You know

Jim Schmidt

what you kind of sound like?

What?

The guy from, what was the music man?

Yes.

John Minow

Oh, yeah.

Right.

Right.

Totally.

Totally.

Because I did hear Curly Lambo talk.

I've never heard him talk.

You know, I'd love to impersonate him.

So you can take liberties.

So I was taking liberties, like, because he loved Hollywood.

He married Miss California.

Yeah, he did.

Jim Schmidt

OK, I guess I want to say something.

Can I correct you?

Sure.

OK.

Curly Lambo did not do anything with the forward pass.

Frank Hermans (interviewee)

Oh, really?

Jim Schmidt

That was Newt Rockney and Gus Dorius.

OK.

And they were working as lifeguards in northern Indiana.

and they had a football and during on the beach they started throwing the football around and they were the guys Gus Dorius was the was the quarterback.

And Newt Rockney was the receiver at Notre Dame, and they pulled it out against Army, and they were like huge underdogs, and they pulled it out, and they threw like three touchdown passes in that game, and that's where it revolutionized the forward pass.

It wasn't curly lamblet

John Minow

out.

Well, no, I didn't say invented.

He pioneered it.

No, he didn't.

In the NFL.

Jim Schmidt

He didn't.

John Minow

In the NFL.

In his book, it says that.

Yeah.

Do you want it?

Do you want it?

Do you want it?

I don't want it.

Dude, you know way

Jim Schmidt

more than I do.

John Minow

OK, can I tell you one other

Jim Schmidt

interesting fact?

Yeah.

OK.

The guy, who is the coach that took over, whence Curly Lamble resigned, who took over for him?

John Minow

Oh gosh, 1950s, 1949, right?

Is that what it was?

I don't even know.

My

Jim Schmidt

grandfather's godson.

Was it really?

Gino Renzani.

How

John Minow

cool is that?

When my

Jim Schmidt

grandfather moved over from Italy, he lived with the Renzani's up in Iron Mountain.

How cool

John Minow

is that?

And then

Jim Schmidt

when Gino was born, my grandfather was his godfather.

Really?

So do you want to talk more old footballer?

No, I don't I just want to be curly Lambo

John Minow

today.

Talk like that!

I like your look though, man!

You talk like Acme Packers!

What are you?

Well, you know, they wanted to look like he wanted to look like the Notre Dame's.

Remember back in the day he wanted that royal blue look and canvas?

You know canvas and it's a very... Buck skin holding your crotchal range.

You know what you like?

I got a belt on there.

You know, no helmet.

Again, you're the music man.

I am the music man But today we got the booyah, you know the the taste of the booyah in the Kringle contest and I'll be emceeing it today It's awesome as Curly Lambo, but I'm here to talk about a brand new musical like I can open it.

We don't

Jim Schmidt

care about that You don't care about no we want to know okay first of all we want to know about what do you think about the whole thing going on?

Were you there last night?

John Minow

I was not.

Oh you went to a concert?

That's amazing like

Jim Santel

I

Jim Schmidt

said that you perform

300 nights a year,

John Minow

and on

Jim Schmidt

an off night you go to see somebody else perform.

John Minow

This is a band that my wife and I have loved, OK Go.

And they haven't put on an album in 10 years.

And for them to play in Milwaukee at Turner Hall is unbelievable, because they usually play like bigger places.

They're a big, big band.

They're an A-list.

It was sold out last night.

But what's sold out at Turner Hall?

I don't know, 3,000 people?

But it was a great concert.

I never

Co-host

loved Turner Hall.

Oh my gosh.

John Minow

Do you think 3,000 fed in there?

What do you think?

I

Co-host

don't know.

I was just there about a month ago.

I was just wondering about Michael.

I would think about 3,000.

You

John Minow

know, it's kind of a big gymnasium.

Guest

It was the German,

John Minow

whatever, built in 1853, where they got together

Guest

and they've worked stage on one end.

What's

John Minow

that?

You paid a few bucks to park.

Actually, I got a park.

It's already across the street.

Four bucks.

Four bucks.

Wow.

Because there's probably no game.

No bucks came, probably.

Yeah, no bucks came.

Yeah, if there was a bucks game, it would be done.

I was like, where am I going?

Co-host

So, okay, what's the musical?

I just want to say that, how many tours did you give yesterday?

Because I heard

John Minow

you and then I gave about seven tours.

I think about six.

So

Co-host

you guys did that today?

No, it was just yesterday.

But Frank, what did you do the tours for?

John Minow

Well, there were people from all over.

Co-host

So anyone would stay in the hotel?

No, no, no.

John Minow

There were people just walking in because they advertised tours of the hotel.

And

Co-host

the tours were either from Paul, who was Johnny Blood, Frank, Curly Lambo, or me.

Oh

Some guy

who knew a little bit about the

the

hotel

Jim Santel

the three

Co-host

times it went bankrupt.

Jim Santel

So

Co-host

I

Jim Santel

talked about that

Co-host

Frank the only reason I wanted trying to clear it up a little bit was I gave out WGBW cards quite a bit.

So they're gonna be listening today.

So And if you see him at the Booyah Fest might say hey, you told me, you know, yeah, I hope so.

Well,

John Minow

that's okay.

I'm okay Hey, I'm making stuff up as I go where did Johnny blood go to college?

Well, he went to college in Minnesota

I don't know if it was Olaf or what it was.

St.

John's.

St.

John's.

Didn't he go back and teach there eventually to economics?

Yeah, he was a smart dude.

Okay, do you know what he did during World War II?

World War II, what was he?

Because he, I don't know, was he in information

Jim Schmidt

or?

OC, OCS, where it's basically like...

the CIA, how that started over in the South Pacific, because he was brilliant.

And he was almost like a spy.

John Minow

Yeah, yeah.

Well, that's why he got away with so much crap in the NFL.

I mean, what do you play for Curly?

I mean, really interesting guy.

What else you got going on?

So Brent, the musical opens up May 7th to the 10th.

That's a story about a guy who can't make up his mind.

I wrote this show about Brett Farth, you know, 17 years ago, we toured all over the state doing this show.

So we thought we'd bring it back.

It's a good one.

It's for dinner and a show.

Brent.

Brent, we call him, is the best slow pitch softball player in Brown County, plays for the bar.

Yeah, but he's thinking about retiring.

Yeah, because there's a new upstart pitcher coming behind him, Darian Rogers.

And the stadium view wants him to come play slow pitch.

Lisa Purple texts him.

Well, he texts her back.

Jim Santel

And let's just say

John Minow

it's

Jim Santel

a

John Minow

story that you

Jim Santel

will love it.

John Minow

Remember, Lisa Purple gets around.

And it's kind of your wife.

No, it's not.

That's Lisa.

My wife plays at least Amy Green, who owns the bar.

But anyway, his buddies, Frankie Begallong, Johns and Chunky, they wanted to stay and play.

for the bar.

Who's playing Frankie?

Frankie Bacon Longjohns is played by Pat.

Oh, OK.

And Johnny, or I'm sorry, Chunky, is played by Paul Evenson.

So they're my buddies.

That will be fun.

And I wrote most of the music for this show.

It's a wonderful show, May 7th through the 10th, backstage in the Meyer.

We

Jim Schmidt

get started with a quick break.

Mark Houston, balance sports medicine, Frank Hermans, let me be Frank Productions, and Todd DePierre being snarky says, hey John, how many times did you pull out the, don't you know who in the hell I am card last night?

Not that many Todd, not that many.

Back after

Frank Hermans (interviewee)

this.

Wisconsin

Radio Announcer

is a fish fry on a Friday night.

This is the Civic Media Radio

Jim Schmidt

Network.

Frank Herman

Thanks for your show.

I'm just wondering if we're going to we're watching you're witnessing a legal system that where what we thought was precedent is now going to be sort of cast away.

Legal Analyst

The reality is the question that you raise about the future and what are the implications when in fact the things we understood always to be bedrocks of our community of our of our nation are no longer that

Amicus Host

amicus a law review Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 being

Public Service Announcer

blind doesn't look how others may think.

Retinitis pigmentosa aimed to overwhelm my family.

NFL Draft Announcer

They tried to cut me down.

I know.

Here we go.

Or

Public Service Announcer

more fighting blindness.org a public service message from the foundation fighting blindness.

Amicus Host

Here we go.

NFL Draft Announcer

With a 23rd pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

the 13-time world champion, Green Bay Packers, for the first time since 2002, draft a wide receiver, Matthew Bolden,

Sports Commentary Host

wide receiver of Texas.

97.9 FMW, JVW 98.3, 96.5 FMW, ISS, of course, the Civic Media.

Frank Herman's in the house.

Special thanks to Mark Houston, Bell and Sports Medicine, who is hosting a tremendous event at their place right now.

If you get a chance to go over to Packard Draft, go around there.

They've got some great, great places to go.

Mike Clemens is joining us here, sports director for Civic Media.

Mike, what'd you think of round number one?

Frank Herman

How about that moment right there last night?

17 years as the CEO and president you come up with this idea 10 years ago Okay, maybe we could get the draft to come here and now you're standing out there It's you know decent enough weather in April.

There's a hundred thousand people in the parking lot They've got another 15 20,000 spillover that go inside the bowl and then they hand you the card and goodies decided to give you Yeah, oh I'd receiver.

Yeah, and you go out there and you get to read that card.

I mean, yeah, even though the parking

within a mile of the stadium in either the houses, the shops, the restaurants, a church was a hundred dollars a car, you know, and any other kinds of hassles.

That was worth it.

That moment was right there worth it.

You know, you don't he should have just dropped the mic right there.

So that's it.

Sports Commentary Host

I agree.

Frank Herman

It's all yours.

Sports Commentary Host

That was that was special.

Yeah.

But it was almost overwhelming the number of people walking around, wasn't it?

Frank Herman

Oh, yeah.

Yeah.

Sports Commentary Host

I mean, it's like.

Weird.

I mean, it's like, holy

Frank Herman

crap.

Yeah.

Yeah.

No, it's it's amazing.

And hopefully the weather will hold up today.

I think you're going

Sports Commentary Host

to get the weather was great last night.

Oh, didn't you?

I mean,

Frank Herman

it's it's late April in, in, in, in

Sports Commentary Host

Wisconsin.

We could have asked for anything much better.

No, I don't think so.

Frank Herman

No.

And so then we get into the, uh, in the media auditorium.

And then Brian Gudekins comes down after the whole round is over with.

And this was the first question that he was asked.

Amicus Host

Given the moment, given that it's here, given the drought, is there any even consideration of, wow, this is significant to finally take a receiver in the first round?

Well, I really sent in a different name, but Mark just announced what he announced.

So, yeah, it is what it is.

No.

Like he made

Frank Herman

it up.

Sports Commentary Host

Yeah.

You know what?

I've been seeing all last week, not to be that guy, but it's like police draft wide receiver.

Remember that, Jeff?

I've

Frank Herman

been saying that for years to write.

Sports Commentary Host

Police draft wide receiver.

I didn't want another defensive back or offensive lineman.

Give me a wide receiver

Frank Herman

was that Javon Walker was

Sports Commentary Host

the last one isn't that crazy

Frank Herman

23 years ago or so.

Sports Commentary Host

So

Frank Herman

they get this kid out of Texas.

Yeah, who I seems

Sports Commentary Host

like a

Frank Herman

great

Sports Commentary Host

kid.

I was talking about

Frank Herman

yesterday.

Yeah, Matthew Golden who eight or nine years ago guys He's living out in front of a Walmart with his mom.

We're going from motel to motel And then a family picks them up and he finishes, you know, three years of high school

He goes to Houston University, then transfers over to Texas, because that was an offense that the Packers felt maybe fit him better in tracking what he did.

And then there was this great moment last night, Jim, where I picked up on something.

I heard an announcement that Brian Goodenkin's, who doesn't do a lot of interviews like Ted did, was going to be on the Rich Eisen show.

So it was actually on my way up.

I called one of our producers and I said, could you record that for me?

But I, I think I caught most of it, you know, in the car.

And after they get done, um, Rich Eisen says, okay, Brian Goodekins, thanks for being on the show.

Coming up next, Texas wide receiver, Matthew Golden.

Oh, oh, I should probably listen to this because this could be a guy, you know, that's on their list was, we'll see.

And so when they come back.

He talks to Matthew about himself a little bit about that tough background.

He said, by the way, during the break, I noticed Brian Goodykins and you two talking backstage.

There was a little embrace there.

What's that all about?

He said, have you seen him before?

He says, I was just in Green Bay two weeks ago, one

Public Service Announcer

of

Frank Herman

those 30 pieces.

Well, how'd that go?

He said, it wasn't great.

This is the kid who says he just had met with Brian two weeks ago, sat down with him.

Matt LaFleur the other coaches and some of the players as well so So I asked both those guys about that and the kid you know the draft pick He's like you know what he said when I saw him yesterday He said that and shook hands with them.

I'm just I'm starting to think maybe this is something you know Maybe there's something there and I asked Goody about last night goes.

Yeah, I want to pump the brakes now Okay, you know, I'm because you know what he's he's trying to improve, you know his

His relationships with players like that, you know, but he hung around for that kid just to say hi to him.

But I said, did you ever think that, you know, 36 hours, you'd actually be picking that kid that he'd be left on the board?

And he said, you know, football decision, he was the kid that was left there.

But, you know, yeah, they both understood that was that was quite a moment.

That's cool.

So Goody knew that if he was on the board, he was taking him by the math, by the math, you know, that's cool.

Yeah.

But what a coincidence.

Right.

Right.

What do you see today?

Maybe they'll get that defensive lineman that we talked about.

And like you talked about, there's so many that they can get.

And maybe they'll get a corner.

And maybe there'll be some sort of a deal for Jair Alexander, a

Sports Commentary Host

trade

Frank Herman

away or something like that.

Sports Commentary Host

I thought a little bit of a theme last night was anybody that can disrupt a quarterback.

Like they're driving a kid from Tennessee who's like, hey, he's light.

But he's tall and he can get to work with that seems to be the trend right now in the NFL.

Quarterbacks are so good that you got to find

Frank Herman

a way to well, just ask the chiefs and Patrick, the homes

Sports Commentary Host

that worked

Frank Herman

out for them at the last Super Bowl.

Yeah.

I mean, that Eagles defense just was relentless all

Legal Analyst

exactly.

That's that's

Sports Commentary Host

the thing right now.

Frank Herman

Or they only needed to send for.

Narrator

Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

John Mino

And

Narrator

here are your

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

hosts, John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back.

Mino and the Mayor.

We got Gizmo in the house.

Oh, yeah, we're gonna be doing a card trick so any so should they bring

Gizmo

out a deck of cards if you've got some cards at home grab them and get them ready

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

grab a deck of cards people gizmo's gonna do a What do we call this an electronic?

Narrator

Magic it's a demonstration.

It's a demonstration of creativity Got a

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

text here.

I honestly don't think visitors from outside of Green Bay have an idea what booyah is Maybe you guys could explain it.

Unknown Contributor

I think the two of you are

Well, we're all three of us are working it, but

Gizmo

yeah, there's a history to it that I've heard that someone down in somewhere southern, Wisconsin I was interviewing someone in the 30s or way back and they said what do you make in there and the guy had such a thick accent He'd meant to say bullion,

Frank

but he said

Gizmo

boo.

Yeah,

Frank

and it was actually the Green Bay Presca is that it was actually it was 1913 or 1914 and it was at the parish was the finger road parish and they had such a thick accent that it said bullion Yeah, they wrote boo.

Yeah

Booyah.

Yeah,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

yeah,

Frank

yeah, yeah, yeah,

Gizmo

yeah.

I did not know it,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

but it's pretty cool.

Like one of the places that that now actually we've had the people on the show.

It's an entertainment thing.

The old, um, um, what's it?

the martyr's church, right across from...

Unknown Contributor

That's what he's talking about.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Finger, yeah.

Yeah, finger road.

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

Right, right, right.

Right across from the pearly gates.

Yeah, pearly gates.

That's where it is.

Yeah, that's where it starts.

But that's the cool thing, when I was there one time for their church picnic back when I was a church, and I said, what's this little shit?

That's what it's for.

John Mino

When

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

they built the church, they built a booyah

Frank

shit with the church.

Wow.

Actually did a show about that, called the booyah.

I did.

I really wrote a show about it.

Got all the history.

It was pretty cool.

Unknown Contributor

Cool.

I

Frank

mean, that is quite the heritage.

Unknown Contributor

I think this event is going to attract out of towners.

Frank

I did too.

Unknown Contributor

Frank and

John Mino

I

Unknown Contributor

were yesterday working tours to the Northland.

So people came by from Canton, Ohio, and actually it's their grandfather, the boys, but they're, and he put together, this is what you got to do while you're in Green Bay, and he had that on the list,

John Mino

so that's pretty

Unknown Contributor

cool.

No, going to the Buya contest and Frank, that's more than just, you guys, that's more than just the Buya.

They got a polka band?

Oh, they got a polka band.

It's six bucks to

Frank

get in.

You can free Buya.

Yeah.

Come on.

Yeah.

They're having a Kringle contest.

Well, that's Kringle too.

That's right.

Yeah.

So there's a lot of food, a lot of entertainment.

I'm going to do the chicken dance and I'm going to dance a beer barrel polka.

Gizmo

Nice.

Yeah, I learned it.

So something I grew up eating was, was snap and turtle Buya.

Can you hear that?

Shut up.

You

Frank

see this?

Honest

Gizmo

to God, I've cleaned many snap

John Mino

and turtles in

Gizmo

my life.

Come on.

Yuck.

Oh, yeah.

Really?

There was a there was a there was a barrel up north at a tavern.

No, I swear to God, people would dump them in there.

If

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

we had a line of a thousand people, no.

gutted a bunch of snapping

Gizmo

turtles.

Oh yeah, I've cleaned many of them.

It's bizarre.

My dad and his dad, it was kind of this tradition.

They would throw turtle meat in with the bulla.

And if ever anything tastes like chicken, it's turtle.

Because you could mix it in and nobody would notice.

People would be like, this is great bulla.

Did you recognize the turtle in there?

There's turtle in here.

Yeah, they're so

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

gross.

I wouldn't even want to eat them.

They're so gross.

Yeah,

Gizmo

I'm not sure.

Yeah, it was a weird thing, but it was something we did.

And you know, we'd have friends come up and they're like, what's your dad doing over there?

He's cleaning a turtle.

Oh my God.

You know, and sometimes they'd have eggs in them and then they'd be like little ping-pong balls.

Okay, don't let that scare

Unknown Contributor

people

Gizmo

away.

No, no, no.

There's no,

Unknown Contributor

our booyah is made by Steve Lasse,

Gizmo

who is like, he told us he's like

Unknown Contributor

4-0 in these contests.

Gizmo

Oh, nice.

And

Unknown Contributor

he made a batch on Sunday, he said it's the best, which,

John Mino

you know, it

Unknown Contributor

doesn't

Narrator

surprise me.

What's the over-under on that,

Unknown Contributor

Jim?

He, I like the guy.

I, we've talked to him a couple times, he's been at the shelter.

These are all nonprofits, by the way, that are competing, so that's cool.

And we need an attraction to get people in our booth, so that's the way we

Gizmo

are.

Yeah, I'm gonna be there doing some magic.

walking around luring people.

I

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

don't care.

I want to go back

Gizmo

to the turtle.

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

Where would you find snapping

Gizmo

turtles?

That's what I'm saying.

There was a barrel.

There was a bar up north that was designated as a turtle barrel.

And people would, if you'd see one running across the road, people would pick them up and bring them to this bar and throw them in this barrel.

So we'd go up for fourth of July weekend.

It was, we'd stay for a week.

What town is this?

Lakewood.

We'd stay up for a week.

We'd go to this tavern.

And the first thing to do is go to the back.

And my dad, we'd look in the barrel and I'd be like, all right, there's some turtles in there.

Three, four, five of them sometimes.

Bring them back to the cabin.

Dad would tip the barrel over.

My brother and I would hold both ends.

One of us would poke them with a stick, and then they bite it, and then the other would grab the tail, and then my dad would start cleaning it.

I don't get any details, but it was great.

I never held you in

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

higher esteem that I'm holding you,

Gizmo

because I'm

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

gonna be honest with you.

I got a fear of snapping

Gizmo

turtles,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

because

Narrator

I

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

remember one time I was fishing, and it was so funny.

It was up in Mountain, the town of Mountain, which is right by Lakewood, and I'm walking on the stream.

And I thought, oh, there's a turtle shell,

John Mino

okay, in the mud.

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

And I started digging it out and it was a snapping

John Mino

turtle.

I didn't know they

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

like lived in the underwear.

Gizmo

And he

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

came up at me.

Remember I told you about the rattlesnake that snapped at

Gizmo

me?

They used to

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

think you would have wished he bit me in the face.

That's the way the

Gizmo

snapping turtle.

So I had a fear of them.

They have a more Mexican bite from a long ways.

You have to be careful.

One of

Unknown Contributor

our text was just text in a lot about it.

A lot of outer towners, not there was one before that.

A lot of outer towners don't know what Pui is.

Why don't you explain it?

Oh,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

well, we're not doing that.

We're not doing that.

My dad loved turtle soup.

Used to drop them off at Frog Station for them to make soup with.

Gizmo

There you go.

Todd.

We were not alone, apparently.

Yeah.

They're protected now, I believe.

You can't, you can't.

You can't.

You can't.

You know what?

What's next?

You

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

cast the first stone that hasn't killed something that's protected,

Gizmo

right?

I'm just saying.

Come

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

on.

We've all done

Gizmo

it.

Frank

Right, Franco?

You know, I think the key to Buia, though, any Buia is Ox Tail.

is the beef.

That is true.

It is the beef because it's basically, you know, you think like a chicken vegetable soup, but it's the oxtail and the beef bouya.

And that's probably what the turtle does with the chicken.

You know, that is the key.

They don't really

Unknown Contributor

disclose their recipes

Frank

though.

They do not.

Unknown Contributor

They do not

Frank

disclose their recipes.

Even when I

Unknown Contributor

talk to Steve, he's like, yeah, I said, you want me to get the ingredients?

He goes, I'll take care of

Gizmo

it.

It's basically, you know, it's a good vegetable.

It's a good amount of, you know, something salty.

But it's the whole kettle.

Unknown Contributor

He was cooking last night.

Gizmo

Yeah.

Unknown Contributor

We

Gizmo

were just

Unknown Contributor

talking about oxtail.

I think that's what it was though.

But

Gizmo

when we had our turtle beef, we mixed in chicken because they would make it in like this 20 gallon thing, you know, over the fire and just stir it up so that it was mixed in.

And whenever people would eat it, they were like, I can't tell which is turtle and which is chicken, you know?

Because people always talked about there's seven kinds of meat in a turtle.

I get it.

How did you

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

kill the snapping turtles?

Gizmo

You had to cut its head off.

And then...

They are full of nerves.

I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable here, but they're too late.

John Mino

Too late, too late.

Yeah, way too late.

Gizmo

They are like a chicken times a thousand, man.

You cut their head off and they move for hours.

Like a snake.

Wow!

Yeah, it's very weird.

Got to text their time.

Did you

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

put that up?

Reggie from Caribbean Taste makes Oxtail.

Remember I was telling you he makes it.

Unknown Contributor

Yeah, good stuff.

And his, that's right.

We were talking to him about Oxtail.

His food truck is parked with Badger State.

If you go to the draft, I talked to him last

Gizmo

night,

Unknown Contributor

and he's got some of the brats burgers.

That's always fun to eat, cheese curds.

That's great stuff.

You've got to have that one day.

But another day, you've got to try

Gizmo

something a little bit

Unknown Contributor

different.

That's where you want to

Gizmo

go.

I've had emu burgers before.

They had them on at UWGB when they were doing, you know, they used to have that festival out there, that summer festival.

The insurance burger?

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

Yeah.

It's like an ostrich?

Gizmo

Yeah.

Yeah, it's a red meat.

It was just like a hamburger, man.

It was just delicious.

Yeah, I was like, I'll try one.

I'll try anything, man.

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

I'm so fascinated that you would kill snapping turtles.

Gizmo

I didn't mind

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

adding it,

Gizmo

but yeah, it was a thing.

It was very common.

Everybody what it was is then we'd bring batches of it to the bar and then everybody that contributed would get a bowl to take home or try it or whatever.

Yeah.

That's just amazing.

Frank

Yeah.

Gizmo

It's a weird story.

Frank

I've got pictures too, man.

Gizmo

Crazy.

Your next theme.

Frank

My next theme is turtle.

Yes, absolutely.

Well, you know, I collected turtle shells when I was a kid.

Seriously?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Did you sell the shells

Unknown Contributor

then?

Because that would be cool.

Frank

Yeah, they're pretty cool.

Those big snappy turtles, the big shells.

People would make them into ashtrays.

Where would you collect them from?

You'd find them on the road, like dead turtles, you know, or on the side.

They're very rare.

I mean, just like a deer horn, you'd find a deer horn out in the woods.

I'd find a turtle shell.

Something had to have eaten all of it.

Wow.

All of it.

Yes.

OK.

Lick the shell clean.

All right,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

Frank,

Frank

let's

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

change subject

Frank

a

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

little bit about what you got

Frank

going on, brother.

Hey, my brand new show, Brent the Musical, opens up May 7th through the 10th.

Dinner theater is back in Green Bay with Let Me Be Franks.

It's going to be at the backstage of The Meyer.

I can only hit 150 folks a night.

There's five great shows.

It's a musical about Brent Favre called Brent the Musical.

We can't say that.

I don't want to get sued.

But it's a great story about a man who can't make up his mind, all the great characters, songs from the 70s.

And a lot of the music I actually wrote in this show, and it's

Dinner in a show, 60 bucks, Myertheater.org, TicketsStarOnline.com.

Come and see, but it's a great event after the draft because we talk a lot.

It's a softball themed show, but it's all football references in the show.

John Mino

What's the

Frank

dinner?

The dinner's an Italian buffet.

Really?

Yeah, Johnny, yeah.

John Mino

Oh my goodness.

We're

Frank

gonna do lasagna, we're gonna have some fettuccine, we're gonna have salad, and you get dessert also.

Yeah.

Nice little chianti.

Little chianti, yeah.

Down's wheels are turning.

Narrator

I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Hello Clarice.

Frank

So come on on, join dinner theater once again with Frank's dinner theater.

That's where we started 27 years ago at the sports corner.

We're bringing it back.

And then what are you doing today?

Today, I am Curly Lamb, and I'm gonna be the emcee of the Booyah Bash or Booyah Contest, downtown Green Bay, 10 to 1 p.m.

along with Mayor Jim Schmidt down there.

We got, I believe, 12 Booyah, 12 Boots.

And all

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

non-profits.

Frank

All non-profits.

Okay,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

can I just say one

Frank

thing?

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

I hope he doesn't win.

Frank

Even though his

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

cook is one of my greatest friends in the world.

Frank

Okay,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

okay.

He's cheating.

Hi.

Because normally he would be like, oh, I'm gonna cook the Booyah myself.

He's bringing in a ringer.

Ringa!

You got a

Unknown Contributor

ringa!

I was gonna bring in...

a guy from the community shelter, Ezra, who's, you like Ezra, he's good, but they gave us, they said, you got to bring in this guy.

So

Narrator

they

Unknown Contributor

had to bring in a chef.

So we want

Narrator

to win, man.

We do, we

Unknown Contributor

want to win.

And then after that at two o'clock, are you going to that?

Frank

I'm not.

I got, my son is Shrek and Shrek, the musical and the brilliant high school tonight.

So I'm going to go home and take a nap.

And then I'm going to go see him, his premiere as Shrek.

He's fantastic.

So

Unknown Contributor

this afternoon, I'm a Karthi way.

There's a super sports fan.

tailgate party and it's people like last night you saw the people there from all the teams dressed up they're all going to this thing a lot of Packer fans as well that's from two to five then I'm going home and taking a nap till Saturday I know been going so but anyway yeah it's it's like he said you got

Let's lean into this thing right now.

It's like absolutely like I got that event today Heritage Hill right

Gizmo

that's

Unknown Contributor

it for the one

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

of

Gizmo

the kinds of stuff going on No, do we have time for a magic trick here?

Frank

Yeah, but

Gizmo

we're gonna get

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

rid of Frank.

Oh

Frank

cuz Yeah, I gotta go brush my teeth and get ready for Thank you get me on.

Thanks.

I give you

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

credit man burn the candle at both ends there.

Frank

Oh,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

wow, you're not young anymore.

Did you know that?

Thank you so much.

Am I?

Actually, you know what you're talking about the ox tail thing.

I tried ordering a thing they

ox tallow.

Sure, fair

Gizmo

skin, I got it.

Frank

You got some.

John Mino

Dude, bring

Frank

me some.

Here's the deal.

It works.

It actually works.

And it doesn't smell like lard.

Right.

It smells pretty.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Got some.

Got some.

Oh, thank

John Mino

you,

Frank

Jimmy.

That's

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

exactly what we want.

We want, we want Mino smelling pretty.

Frank

Yeah,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

I mean.

Oh man, that's so cool.

Good seeing you, Frank.

Yeah.

Gisbel, how you doing?

Gizmo

Good, man.

I am doing so good.

Now, uh... Okay,

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

folks, if you're listening at home...

Gizmo

Grab your cards.

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

Grab a deck of cards.

Gizmo

Yeah.

Jim Schmidt (Mayor)

Trust me.

Trust me.

You will be amazed that two minutes.

Excuse me.

I want to start it now.

Yeah, we come back.

Um, you know what?

Let's let's come back.

That'll give people time to grab.

Gizmo

Right.

Let's grab a deck of

Unknown Contributor

cards, people.

What else you got going on?

What's going on?

Gizmo

Well, uh, there's so much going on now.

I did notice that you had Michael Yang go on here last week.

He's talking about all the stuff going on with evergreen.

So I kind of don't have to cover too much of that.

Unknown Contributor

But it's okay to.

It's okay.

Gizmo

Yeah.

There's there's some great stuff coming up.

The vultures is coming up.

That's who he was here for.

Yes.

And then there's a kid show.

Briar.

which is the story of Sleeping Beauty.

I'm helping with that set.

It's a really cool...

Did you know VA home loans are a key to home ownership for those who served?

Veteran Interviewee

In the military we make a lot of sacrifices and with the VA loan it makes it easier for us to get a home.

We were able to purchase this home and then use the money that we were going to use as a down to actually fix up the home.

I would tell anybody who is interested in getting a VA loan to just do it.

loans.

Morning NFL Draft of course round number two coming up today, and we got gizmo in the house no ladies and gentlemen, and I'm not even joking about this If you have a deck of cards gizmo is going to do a trick over the airways this will be fun that will amaze you

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Go ahead gizmo.

All right.

I'll you just follow the directions and the magic will happen in front of you I need you to make two piles of cards, and I've done something similar to this This is a different version of a similar trick, but here we go.

So make two piles of cards, but actually

Look at that one's got your name on it John.

Let me grab those cards back from you actually I gave you the wrong deck.

Let me get those cards from you Yeah, I know right did you do that I did that's got your name on it, right?

It's

Host

your deck So I just cut the deck of cards just random Any the car and your name showed up

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

on it.

Host

Oh, they're all like that

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

except for some of them are like that.

Yeah

Okay,

Co-host

what the hell?

Time, seven

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

minutes.

All right, so here, I'll give you a different deck.

There you go.

All right, sorry, I gave them a marked deck, technically.

Interjection from Unidentified Speaker

Wow.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Okay.

All right, so here's what we're gonna do.

I want you to make two small piles, and they both need to have the same amount in each pile.

So let's say less than 10.

So make two piles of like three or two piles of six or two piles of four, whatever you want.

Don't tell them, you don't tell me what your pile, how many are in your pile.

Just make two piles, so they're the same in both piles.

So if you have four, make two piles of four.

If you have six, two piles of six.

And then I need you to keep the rest of the cards in your hand, all right?

So the discard pile stays in your hand.

All right.

Now I need you to take one of those piles and push it away from you.

Okay.

That's the away pile.

Then the toward you pile is going to be the one you pick up.

Now take the rest of the discard pile in your hand here.

You got it in your hand there.

There you go.

Pick up that small pile and look at the bottom card.

The little small, no, no, no, the small pile in front of you.

There

Veteran Interviewee

you

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

go.

Look at the bottom card.

Memorize it.

All right.

You got it memorized.

Yes.

Now add that little stack back to the top of the discard pile to the rest of the card right on top.

Now grab the whole deck.

Just like that, and put down five cards facedown, one on top of each other.

One, two, three, four, five, like that.

And did you remember your card

Host

now?

We're going back

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

to that, okay.

Now put down three more cards, actually.

One, two, three.

Host

On top of that pile.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Yeah, right on top, right on top.

You know what?

Let's go three more.

One, two, three.

Three more, okay.

That should be good.

Let's pick up that pile now and put them on top of the discard pile.

Pick them all up, put them on top of there.

And now you've got the pushed pile out in front of you.

Grab those two and put them right on top of the discard pile.

Do what?

The pile that you pushed away.

Okay.

Put those right on top of the pile.

Got it.

There you go.

Okay.

Now I need you to spell some stuff, right?

We're gonna spell what?

With cards.

So, W-H-A-T.

You can flip these up if you want.

Doesn't matter.

W-H-A-T.

Spell that word with cards.

One letter per card.

So, W-H-A-T as you flip the cards, you get one letter per card.

Okay, and then the, wait a minute, how many cards, four or five?

Four, yep, four, W-H-A-T, right?

And then the word the, so T-H-E, T-H-E.

Okay.

And then the word heck, we're gonna keep this clean, right?

So H-E-C-K, okay?

Okay.

What the heck?

Now all those three words spell a sentence, and I want you to say that sentence, and then flip over the next card, okay?

You ready?

Say the sentence, what the?

What the heck?

And now flip over the next card.

Yeah, it's your card.

It is.

It is.

Unidentified Speaker

Pod?

Yep.

What the heck?

Co-host

Keep it clean.

Unidentified Speaker

You know what I noticed on these Gizmo?

Yeah.

You have to explain more than once because of Mino.

Yeah, you're just not very good at taking direction Which I knew but

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

sometimes

Unidentified Speaker

you need

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

to

Host

be clear for anybody playing at home

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Call us in Texas.

Let us know if this worked for you.

Host

All

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

right.

What the heck dude?

Was it your card when

Host

you said

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

what the heck?

Host

You never fail to shock us And again, it's it's magic or whatever you want to call it but seeing it soak

up close and personal as a whole different element to it.

It just does.

I agree.

You're

Co-host

not shy about just walking up to someone and saying, you have a dollar.

Host

You do that a lot.

Oh my god.

At my son's graduation party, that was so fun that day with you.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

You know, I've had people come up to me after an event and say, you know,

I'm usually, you know, introverted and I'm shy and people notice that about me and you walked right up to me and started doing that.

I love that.

Host

Yeah.

And I'm like, Hey, you're

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

welcome.

Host

Yeah.

Got a text here.

This guy was next to my golf ball at Brown County golf course last fall.

William, look at the size of that snapping.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Yeah.

He looks delicious.

How do you know?

Host

Cause the tail.

Yeah.

And the head.

They have a

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

specific look.

Yeah.

Interjection from Unidentified Speaker

Oh.

Host

Wow, they are just mean vicious animals

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

they are there are there are snapping there were back in the day there was snapping tunnel

Stepping turtle hunters that would go into the swamps and just reach in with their

Host

hand.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

I've seen that.

Yeah, but you know if you

Host

know what's that called?

There's a term for that.

Co-host

Remember stupid.

Host

Yeah, there you go.

That's it.

No, he's right next.

Yeah, and they reach in and they grab up by the tail.

Todd you would know what are those guys called

Co-host

like those alligator guys

Host

and a lot of it But they're like turtles and something like Louisiana, Mississippi where they'll just be in those

To be fair though, like when you said

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

you saw one in the mud, they do bury in the mud.

So they just feel for the shell and then they go for the tail.

But sometimes they don't go the right direction and they get.

Wow.

Maybe they're wearing those like metal, those gloves that are, you know, Kevlar.

No, no, I seen them bare handed.

Yeah.

Wow.

But Kevlar would be a good idea.

But I think they can bite through Kevlar.

I don't think Kevlar protects you from a bite.

Host

There are snapping turtles.

The amount of pressure is like mind-boggling.

How much they break.

And they never let go.

You're right.

With their jaws.

It's

Co-host

unbelievable.

And your dad made you hatch them?

Yeah.

Wow.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Yeah.

I'd

Host

love

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

to

Co-host

go

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

into detail how to clean one, but it gets kind of

Host

gross.

Did you ever get bit?

Did you ever get bit?

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

No.

Nope.

Never got bit.

But my dad was very cautious.

He gave us everything to look for, everything to watch out for, and everything to be careful of, you

Co-host

know?

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

Because there's just certain things you just have to do.

Here's

Co-host

more.

We've got another minute.

What else is going on in your life?

I mean, you're an entertainer, obviously, with your magic.

Can people...

Book you for special

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

events.

Summer is coming.

There's

Co-host

always a lot of summer events.

You

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

can find me at the magic of gizmo.com.

I'm

Host

always going to do that.

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

The magic of magic.

I like that.

Host

I

Gizmo (Guest Magician)

do.

And you know, I do sort of, if you see me in public, and I tell people this all the time, because some people see me and they're like, oh, I don't want to, I don't want to bug them, but that's totally okay.

If you see me and you, hey, man, can you show my friend or my kid or whoever I imagine?

Absolutely.

I always carry magic

Co-host

with me everywhere I go.

You taught some kid.

at that pizza party.

Yeah, I showed him a little trick.

He, like that just made his, I think

Veteran Interviewee

that made his

Co-host

life.

Now back to Mino and the Mayor.

Here's John Mino

John Mino

and Jim Schmidt.

for a music series and he did it to you too, didn't

Kalen Cole

he?

He blew my mind.

It was insane.

I was watching him the whole time.

John Mino

Isn't that crazy?

Kalen Cole

Yeah.

It's wild.

It's so weird to be

John Mino

a foot and a half away from him and watching him do magic.

Kalen Cole

And I'm watching his sleeves too and everything.

Oh, he

Jim Schmidt

rolled up his sleeves.

Yeah,

Kalen Cole

that's what he

Jim Schmidt

does.

He's very good.

It's

Kalen Cole

so great

Jim Schmidt

to have you

Kalen Cole

back.

Yes.

Yes.

I'm glad to be back.

This is my first time with y'all though.

John Mino

You know, I gotta tell you something though and Amanda does a wonderful job at lighting up our guests.

When we talk about this, there is really great talent in Northeast Wisconsin.

Unknown Speaker

Yeah.

And you're

John Mino

one of those, I know you're from Portage and you're going to Nashville and the whole thing, but is that the joy?

Jim, we talk about that.

I don't know if it's the schools or the teachers, but man, we get some

Kalen Cole

great talent.

It's the hard work that is...

Driven into us when we're in kids

John Mino

But that is true if you want to make it with what you do

Kalen Cole

Yeah,

John Mino

there is no other substitute than the hard grind

Kalen Cole

is it?

Yeah, that's true,

Jim Schmidt

and I think you know blessing the curse this the sports overshadowed sometimes the musical talent

Kalen Cole

you know

Jim Schmidt

theater visual arts just really

the paintings, the dance,

Unknown Speaker

and obviously

Jim Schmidt

the whole creative side.

But I want to give the community, Appleton, Oshkosh, there's just more venues now than there used to be, which helps people like you.

Even you're performing this Sunday and that venue didn't exist

Unknown Speaker

at

Jim Schmidt

one time, right?

Unknown Speaker

Now it

Jim Schmidt

does.

So you start with these smaller places and you can really, it's not like...

a bar and then and then Lambeau Field.

You know, we've got so many steps that you can make on the way up there.

Kalen Cole

Yeah, it's just great.

I mean, even the theater right downtown,

Jim Schmidt

right?

Kalen Cole

Yeah, right.

I've had a couple of friends that have played there before.

That's

John Mino

a phenomenal

Kalen Cole

place.

And there's another one

John Mino

across the street, the Tarleton 200, which is old.

It was exactly the same.

When I moved to Green Bay, I went to movies at both of those places.

Kalen Cole

Right, right.

I want to play at both.

Jim Schmidt

Yeah, they're great.

And that Tarleton is

really good about getting people that are just getting started.

And he's even got something, even a little smaller venue, maybe 75 people, 100 people.

And then you go there and 1000

Unknown Speaker

people,

Jim Schmidt

right in the Whitener 2000 and you keep, there's just a lot of places.

And I think that's great.

And that's just Green Bay.

I mean, Appleton has a, they really leaned into music

John Mino

down

Jim Schmidt

there.

Kalen Cole

Well, music's a funny thing because you could be a.

second tier artists on top of the big names, one right below that per se.

But you could be playing in a sold out place of 4,000, 5,000 people, like The Rave in Milwaukee

Unknown Speaker

or

Kalen Cole

something like that, and then be playing a small little 25 person bar the next day.

The music industry very much so humbles you.

But I'm glad for that.

And by

John Mino

the way, it's a very cool tattoo you have on your wrist.

Kalen Cole

Thank you.

What is that?

This one or this one?

John Mino

Oh, I saw the one

Kalen Cole

underneath.

Well, this is just a heart with a bass clef and a treble clef.

That's

John Mino

cool.

Kalen Cole

Yeah.

Tell us a

John Mino

little bit about yourself.

How did you get into music and

Kalen Cole

how

John Mino

did you get here?

I mean, go ahead.

Kalen Cole

Yeah, give us

John Mino

your story.

Kalen Cole

I'm a very extroverted person.

I feel like majority of the music industry is.

But I used to

like I was in choir, I was in theater when I was a child.

I have a lot of my choir teachers to thank just for like believing in me and you know.

I don't want to interrupt you but

John Mino

I'm going to tell you something and Jim and I talk about this all the time.

Kalen Cole

It's one

John Mino

thing I give Jim credit for.

He always asked about that.

Where was that spark?

And so often it was a teacher at a young age that gave those kids that spark.

Jim Schmidt

Your parents believed in you but it's not the same.

You

John Mino

know,

Jim Schmidt

sometimes you need that outsider to say, you know what, you've really got talent.

It's like, and then you come home and my teacher said, I really got talent.

It's like, well, honey, we've been telling you that for

Kalen Cole

years, but

Jim Schmidt

you hear from

Kalen Cole

that outside.

Well, I mean, parents are sometimes biased.

Oh yeah, we are.

And so my parents, when I, so when I was younger, my dad has a brother and he was a musician in his college age, early 20s.

And so I thought he was, you know, everything when I was younger.

I thought he was like.

God, almost.

And I was like, I want to be like a rock and roll person just like you.

And it was so fun.

So he is my main influence.

I was around three or four years old when I was around him.

Majority of the time.

Yeah.

John Mino

And that's where you got the sport.

Kalen Cole

Yeah.

And so my dad was also a DJ too.

And so he had really.

Yeah.

It was a station near I believe La Crosse because he did it in his college years.

Oh, that's cool.

Yeah.

So.

He had like all of these CDs though, cause you know, back then you didn't have Spotify or whatever.

And so he would bring in a new TV or a new CD.

What is Spotify?

He would bring in a new CD like almost every week and it was either like Sean Paul, Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley.

So I had grow up on those kinds of songs and I just was singing lyrics that I didn't even really know what meant at the time.

Further on, I started doing karaoke competitions, and that's when my parents were like, are we biased, or does she have something?

And I was taking second, first, or third place in karaoke competitions, and I was the youngest, and the second youngest was mid-thirties.

So I was 11.

John Mino

Wow.

Kalen Cole

Yeah.

John Mino

We're going to just text your Kalen Cole slash Known Vandals collab, Trent Magic.

Kalen Cole

Oh.

I don't know who Trent is.

I got to know who that is.

Really, okay.

See his t-shirt?

Very close

John Mino

t-shirt.

Kalen Cole

They've done the

John Mino

theme.

They wrote the theme for the NFL Draft.

We scammed them.

Kalen Cole

We scammed them.

John Mino

They want to collab with you.

Kalen Cole

That is amazing.

They're

John Mino

listening to you right now.

Kalen Cole

I would love to.

John Mino

They're a lot of fun.

Kalen Cole

Yes, please.

Very

John Mino

creative,

Jim Schmidt

right.

Kalen Cole

Message me on Instagram at Kailin Cole.

I would love to.

What's

Jim Schmidt

Instagram?

K-O-L-E.

Kalen Cole

Yes, K-O-L-E.

I try to make it easy for people, you know, alliteration.

And these guys are

John Mino

great.

I mean,

Kalen Cole

if they

John Mino

want to team up with you, you would really like these

Kalen Cole

guys.

That's so awesome.

I love that.

Have you guys heard of Frankie Moscato?

Yes.

Yeah.

I love Frankie.

She's a good friend of mine.

Oh, I'm kidding.

And I text her occasionally, and she's up here.

She, you know, does the anthem for the Packers all the time.

Get her in here.

She's amazing.

I'll have to text her.

Oh, cool.

Jim Schmidt

So you're 11 years old.

You're cleaning up.

Your parents are telling you that, and you're like, hmm.

Kalen Cole

Yeah.

Jim Schmidt

So your uncle.

came back in your life and said

Kalen Cole

yeah well he's always been around but I actually lived with my grandparents for like a little bit over a year because we just had to sell our house in La Crosse and we moved back to Portage and so you know my parents were working a lot so my grandparents kind of took care of me just for like a year.

But at the time, my uncle was also living there, too, because he was, you know, mid-twenties.

And so we spent a lot of time together.

And I've got pictures of me with hot pink eye shadow on, with his drumsticks in my hand, behind his drum set.

And I just, I loved making noise, I guess, as a kid, as most kids do.

But...

That just throughout school and then karaoke competitions and then they turned into talent competitions and then this one talent competition was in Black River Falls and on the panel of the Judges was somebody from Nashville and I was 15 and he came up to me and he was like Have you ever heard of Nashville, Tennessee?

And this was 2016.

I was like now.

Where's

Unknown Speaker

that?

Kalen Cole

And so

That summer, my parents and I took a trip down and I fell in love and I wanted to go to Belmont.

Belmont's too expensive, so I didn't go to college.

They've

John Mino

got a very good basketball program.

Yeah.

Kalen Cole

I love the students that are there too.

I mean, I write with some of them here and there, but I just didn't take the college route because college will always be there.

Opportunities will not always be there.

So I'd much rather use that to my advantage.

John Mino

If you could change places with somebody in the music business, who would it be?

Who's like your favorite?

Kalen Cole

Who do

John Mino

you like look at and say, I'm gonna do this?

Kalen Cole

I love Chris Stapleton because I love him, his heart.

I love how humble he is.

I love just the way that he does his music and can tour, but also the

Paparazzi or whatever.

It's just not always breathing down his neck.

I love that.

John Mino

That's all I listen to on my serious or whatever I

Kalen Cole

got in my

John Mino

car now is the Chris Stapleton

Kalen Cole

Network.

Isn't

Jim Schmidt

that awesome?

Yeah, he's

Kalen Cole

awesome.

Jim Schmidt

So in Nashville, did you then play on Broadway?

Did you go to some of those bars and

Kalen Cole

yeah?

Yeah, that's why I played.

Hang

Jim Schmidt

on

John Mino

Todd's interrupting us.

He says

Let her play.

Let's play something.

Kalen Cole

Stop talking and let her play.

Wouldn't that be funny if I just sucked and you guys were like, oh, this is awkward?

John Mino

Got another question.

Kalen Cole

Yeah, that would be.

John Mino

Kalen Cole.

Bring it on, young lady.

Kalen Cole

Sounds good.

This song is going to be out in the fall.

I'm currently in the studio right now.

This one's called Gauner.

I wrote this with Marla Kanan Goodman and Lexie Lu.

Unknown Speaker

She's got a suitcase.

Tucked off underneath her bed frame.

One look inside would be a dead giveaway.

you what you want

John Mino

110 pounds and you got and you got this voice.

That's like so strong.

Kalen Cole

Thank you.

That

John Mino

is so cool.

Caleb Cole back with more.

music series.

And man, do we have a talented young musician here?

Kailin Cole got a text right here.

Wow.

She is amazing.

Now that is talent.

What a great guest.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

That's really nice of them.

Oh, I love that.

Show Host

Again, though, what a great, you're just telling us during the break, though, tough business,

Kailin Cole (Musician)

huh?

It's it's a business.

It's a business.

You know, it's so much more than the music, you know, it really is.

So

Show Co-Host

and that's

kind of life and

Kailin Cole (Musician)

you're

Show Co-Host

learning that you know

Kailin Cole (Musician)

it is

Show Co-Host

you don't have an agent you don't you're not part of a

a band that has a business manager.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

It's you.

No, I actually, so I do a variety of acts.

I mainly do solo because it's easy logistically to go and travel and also stay.

And it's a lot cheaper and financially a better option to do solo stuff.

But I love bringing my friends on the road.

I actually had Lexie Lu here last time with me at the station.

But I also have a band that'll come up here, too.

So we're going to be up here in July and August.

And tell us about your

Show Host

album.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Yeah.

So to be honest, I don't know what the album's called yet, but I have all the songs.

And I'm just getting ready to do a lot of promotion on the back end and release it in the fall.

Show Host

Hopefully find your music.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

You can find it anywhere.

You can ask Alexa to play it.

Sometimes if she's in the right mood, she'll play it for you.

Show Host

She can

Kailin Cole (Musician)

be such

Show Host

a wench sometimes.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

I yell at her all the time.

I know.

I'm like, shut up.

I

Show Host

know.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

But it's just K-A-Y-L-I-N and K-O-L-E.

That's my artist name.

That's my socials, everything.

So you can find me YouTube, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify.

Todd,

Show Host

tell me what your text is.

Ask her.

Ask her.

What's it like to busk

Kailin Cole (Musician)

busking?

That's so funny because somebody told me that I I should do that.

What is that?

Show Host

What's busking

Kailin Cole (Musician)

busking is?

Basically standing out on the side of the sidewalk just with opening your guitar case for tips and just kind of sing into the people that'll listen Do you ever do that?

I actually have never done that and that's kind of my bucket list

So maybe I should do that during the drought.

Show Co-Host

You know

Show Host

what?

Show Co-Host

Absolutely, yeah.

You know

Radio Show Promoter

what?

Think

Kailin Cole (Musician)

about

Radio Show Promoter

this.

You've got all these people lining up for the bus down here.

Absolutely.

You can probably set up right outside the studio.

Right outside of

Show Host

Hagenmeister's right here.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Good ol' Hagenmeister's.

Yes.

Hey, that breakfast spot right there, though?

So good.

That is.

Creamery?

Yes.

I've been there twice.

So good.

Show Host

Yeah, it's fantastic.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

It's

Show Co-Host

amazing.

Yeah.

I just want to make sure that's legit that you can do that.

But that

Kailin Cole (Musician)

would be a good idea.

Yeah.

I was like, what are the ordinances?

I don't want to get arrested.

Show Host

I've never seen that Green Bay.

Have

Show Co-Host

you?

I wonder.

Show Host

I

Kailin Cole (Musician)

wonder if

Show Host

that's

Kailin Cole (Musician)

the reason.

I hope that's OK.

Show Co-Host

You know what?

Show Host

Because when he was mayor,

Show Co-Host

he would make sure he got cut somehow.

Well, we can work that out.

That's so funny.

you know, I think it would be nice to do that.

Well, there would be two reasons to do that.

One is, you know, so people can put in, you know, five, 10s, 20s, but hopefully somebody would walk by that would say, wow, throw in his business card or something

Kailin Cole (Musician)

after yours would be better, you know.

But

Show Co-Host

this is an opportunity because we have people in here from, you know, all over.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Not that people in

Show Host

Green

Show Co-Host

Bay.

And

Show Host

guys don't hit on her because she's wearing a $10,000 diamond ring.

He's

Kailin Cole (Musician)

kidding.

You gotta

Show Host

hear this story.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Yeah.

Go ahead and tell that.

I said, wow,

Show Host

beautiful ring.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Yeah, he walked in and I was tuning my guitar and he was like, oh, beautiful ring.

And I was like, thanks, it's fake.

And, you know, I just, I found it at a thrift shop and I was like, it looks kind of like an engagement ring, but yeah.

But to

Show Host

keep the drunk guys

Show Co-Host

and bars

Show Host

away.

Keep them at

Kailin Cole (Musician)

bay.

Yeah.

Do

Show Host

you

Show Co-Host

have something else you want to play for

Kailin Cole (Musician)

us?

Yeah.

We want to hear some art.

I

Show Host

could

Kailin Cole (Musician)

play something else.

We want,

Show Host

okay, this has been a huge week in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Yes, it has.

And all points are on.

Show Host

And we want you to close out our week for us on one of the

Kailin Cole (Musician)

biggest

Show Host

weeks we've ever had in Green Bay.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

That is so sweet.

Show Host

You are awesome.

Kailin Cole, K-O-L-E, look her up, ladies and gentlemen.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Please.

Show Host

Do your thing.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Sounds good.

Show Host

It's awesome having you here.

Kailin Cole (Musician)

Oh, and I'll also be at Black Saddle at 3 to 6 p.m.

on Sunday, if y'all want to meet me in person.

Show Host

All right.

We all will do

Kailin Cole (Musician)

that.

Sounds good.

Slowly making your rounds Try to make something happen Get a drunk girl to dance with So you can take her back to your house Well you think you're smooth Bend in the truth But there's so much that you lack You ain't Jack, Jack, Jack

You may be easy on the eyes But I know there's a side to you That would leave me hurt You could promise me hell

It's me

Announcer

Coming to Northeast Wisconsin live from the Civic Media Studios, this is Mino and the Mayor.

And

John Mino

here are your hosts, John Mino and Jim Schmidt.

Hey, thank you very much.

Welcome back, Mino and the Mayor.

We got a beautiful morning out there and I gotta tell you something, folks.

You wanna talk about talent, homegrown talent?

We got some homegrown talent right here.

To die hard northeast Wisconsin people who put their artist talents to something pretty cool regarding the NFL Draft stress the mind and Trent magic known Vandals Jim take

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

it away talking about the NFL Draft bringing out the best of the best some people been sitting on some pretty good talent waiting for today And these guys look

John Mino

bad

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

They couldn't do it with them in a bar.

They couldn't do it for this time of the morning.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to tangle with either one of these guys.

But you're doing two things today.

You're dropping this great song that is unique to our community, the culture

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

of our community.

It's

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

not like this cheesehead song or it's not too much.

It's family friendly.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

And you

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

also have a video.

So tell us a little bit about your two guys and then I'll tell me a little bit more about the song.

But first of all, introduce yourselves as your duo.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

Well, we are known vandals.

I go by stress the mind.

I do the lyrics and Yeah, I'm

John Mino

phenomenal voice by the

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

way.

Yeah, I

John Mino

would not be I would not be a disjointed

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

Don't you think you

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

put

John Mino

in your pipe?

Don't be honest with you.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Don't you think

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

he knows that?

In high school my teachers used to be like you should do radio you should do radio and I ended up doing music so I guess it's kind of close enough

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Very soothing.

Yeah

I'm Trent magic.

I do all the production and I do the DJ stuff when we're live and hanging and playing shows and stuff like that But yeah, so I write all the music co-produced with him, too We both bounce a lot of ideas off together when I'm sort of producing what we are so right, right?

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Yeah, okay, so you guys this

She said with an attitude that you had enough of that.

We grew up with that.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

I love all that stuff.

We just were in the studio a few months ago, thinking about it, and we were talking about how the draft was coming up.

I was like, man, has anyone, to my knowledge, to your knowledge, has anyone ever made a song just about the culture and state of Wisconsin in general?

Like an original song.

And we couldn't find it.

We looked, we couldn't find it.

So we were like, we need to.

do that.

We need to make that song.

You sought

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

a little local talent.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

Right.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And we asked around and we're fortunate enough to get some cameos in the video.

I can't believe you didn't go to

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Minow here.

He's always begging.

He's always begging.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Find the talent.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

He'll tell you that he was like, I don't know, some school up in Michigan.

He was eight kids in the class.

He was

In a play.

Sure.

Todd

In a play.

That's all I know.

I have to say, Jim, if you use the terminology, your song drops today.

That was pretty hip for me.

That was

John Mino

awesome.

I agree.

Thank you,

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Todd.

John Mino

Thank

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

you,

John Mino

Todd.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

So at

John Mino

the

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

diver, anything

John Mino

good that happens with the show is because of Todd.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

Trust us.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Lies.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

You

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

got Spencer Young in there.

We're a huge fan of his.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

So are we?

Big fan of Spencer.

Actually, he's the one.

I got credit him for starting it all off.

So he actually, I had met him.

He did his paintings right there.

I was gonna say they look like Spencer's work.

You

John Mino

know what he painted them with?

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

His mind.

John Mino

What did he paint them with?

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Worse, oh gosh.

John Mino

A football and a cleat.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

I was actually gonna say a cleat jokingly, but seriously.

We

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

took that to a charity auction for the new community shelter.

650 bucks that one went for it.

I'm going to mine

John Mino

off for local vets.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Oh, that's the best.

He's a great guy, well good.

John Mino

But you know what though that's something that Jim and I talk about and Todd we all talk about that it's like well we try to do with this little show or whatever is is bring out the great talents right here that are right around here you don't have to be from Chicago we've got talent

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

and we're sort of just starting too so like you know this song is kind of made for everybody in Wisconsin here we're from the state we love this state and

We might not be very known being the known vandals, but this was sort of a song we were hoping like,

John Mino

hey, that is a great lot.

That is a great.

Yeah.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

And we were like, let's write a jam that everybody can relate to and love

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

and just see where it goes.

Yeah, we just thought this could be played anywhere, any sporting event, any sort of like, it's family friendly.

It's good for everybody.

Everybody that's from here is even visited here for a while.

When you hear the lyrics and watch the video, you get it.

It is hilarious.

And

John Mino

we're

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

going to be

John Mino

hearing that.

I don't mean to sound like a weird guy.

You got the greatest voice.

Thank you.

Thank you.

It's like, damn

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

it.

Okay.

John Mino

That's true now.

I'm gonna tell you.

Right.

Sorry, buddy.

What's your name again?

Trent.

Okay.

No,

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

no, no.

His voice is great.

It's

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

incredible.

Yeah.

Thank you.

Thank you.

It just works out.

Works out that way.

You should hear him rap.

Yeah.

Let me hear a little.

Give me a little.

And you will.

John Mino

Yeah, you will.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Right now.

What should we do?

Want me to beatbox and you can do the first

John Mino

thing.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

I'll beatbox and do the first ready to do the first part of the song.

John Mino

Yeah.

Yeah.

Oh, he's

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

I'll just beatbox real quick.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

All right.

All right.

Let's start with the first

From out the deadly land, you know what?

Yeah, the cheese sad state.

Right up north, tucked in, right next to the Great Lakes.

This is a place we call home.

Never afraid to admit it.

Back in 1848 is where our story's beginning.

So sit and listen.

Let me tell you all just what we're about.

Stuff for hunting and fishing.

We never leave home without it.

And throughout all of the seasons, we're prepared for a blizzard.

We'll drive for the roughest conditions.

Back to the fishing.

We even do it on ice.

We drill a hole and drink a brew.

Believe me, this is the life.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Love it!

Alright, did the research on that one.

Little taste.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, right,

John Mino

right, right.

That's so cool.

Introduce yourselves again.

Tell a little bit about your background, what you do, and this whole thing.

Yeah, I had to get into this,

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

yeah.

Yeah, no problem.

So I'm Trent Magic.

Trent Brusky is the real name, though.

Don't tell anybody.

Okay.

Brusky?

Yeah, Brusky.

Yeah.

John Mino

As

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

in

John Mino

the old Packer...

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Dr.

John Mino

Brusky?

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

That's my grandfather.

Yeah, Hall of Famer.

Shut

John Mino

up!

It is.

It is.

Dr.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Brusky.

Yeah, he's got a football card.

SPEAKER_??

Oh my god.

John Mino

I was at his induction to the Packer Hall of Fame.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

That's awesome.

1993.

Yeah.

John Mino

So

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

was I.

John Mino

That is so

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

cool.

Wow.

So being him.

Yeah.

So yeah.

So he's my grandpa.

He's cool.

He was the first doctor the Packers ever had, I think, right?

You're correct.

Yeah.

John Mino

That's

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

awesome.

Wow.

Okay.

Yeah, he should have been in the Hall of Fame a lot earlier though.

John Mino

Absolutely.

I know who

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

I talk to

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

about

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

that.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Well, so I've been in a lot of punk bands and I've done a lot of like hip hop production and stuff in the past 10 years, but music's always been my thing.

Hip hop production.

And I used to make music for commercials and different things back in the day.

Todd, you probably know a lot of stuff about that, you know, absolutely.

But.

Him and I

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

have known each other all

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

the cool people.

You know

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

what I'm saying?

We are not.

He's quiet about it.

He's quiet about it.

We don't know anything about it.

John Mino

Yeah.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

He's known for two years when I think about him.

No.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

I feel a connection through the glass.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

I know.

I'm seeing that.

As a fellow

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

producer

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

of radio.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Yeah.

But so Luke and I have known each other for years and you know we've played in bands separately together at shows and just we've been great friends.

So this known Vandals connection was something him and I kind of always wanted to do but never knew it.

So

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

here we

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

are.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

This.

I think that you're, again, I only know that we're dropping now because I don't know what's going on.

How do people, how do you launch something like that?

I mean, you're not

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

in a boat.

Well, very carefully.

I mean, obviously we're completely independent.

We don't have, you know, investors or bosses or anything like that.

So we just, with the video.

I would

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

encourage you to stay on that

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

track.

Right.

So the song, the song was, I had written the song for the lyrics and I'd come up with the idea for it.

And he was like, let me make a, let me make a beat for it.

And it just, we kind of went back and forth and it just kind of worked out perfectly.

And we need something kind of simple, but a lot of like kind of whimsical and silly because, you know, a lot of everybody from at least a lot of my out of state friends are like, Wisconsin, what do you have there besides beer, cheese and the Packers?

but we have those things.

You know what I mean?

It's all right.

It's true.

Well,

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

they also say, and mine own the mayor.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And then we have a... I know the former mayor of Green Bay.

Shut up.

Shut up.

We had gotten a hold of one of our good friends.

His name is Trace Passion.

Shout out to Trace.

Shout out to Trace, 1212 Productions.

He runs a media company called 1212 Productions and he's got all the camera gear and stuff.

He's like, I'm gonna get behind you guys and we're gonna make the most...

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

yeah it is dropped it is ready

John Mino

everybody where people can see this

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

You can see it on our YouTube page right now.

It's just YouTube search for known vandals.

Look us up.

Or whisk them too.

Or you can search for whisk them.

That's actually speaking of whisky.

Who did that?

Whoever did.

Because you know what

John Mino

we're very big fans of?

With all their craft breweries and everything.

Yeah.

They've gotten so great with their artwork.

Oh man.

With their

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

look.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

I mean

John Mino

it's like you'd buy something.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

Oh!

We got shirt.

These are for you guys.

Thank you.

Who designed

John Mino

that?

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

We did.

John Mino

Yeah.

That is so cool.

You got a walleye on there.

You got a

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

walleye, some lures, some cheese.

John Mino

That is so cool.

You get the right orange one.

I get the black one.

Thank you

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

guys.

That is really cool.

That's great.

How can we promote you guys more?

And YouTube is 20 years old today.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

So

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

this

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

is

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

we're

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

rolling it

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

out.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

So this will be a great

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

anniversary.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

I remember I saw a video the other day where they were talking about how the YouTube creators were

only had 40 videos and they were terrified that was going to fail super bad or something.

Yeah.

So you

John Mino

guys, okay, when you guys shoot a video, tell me, tell me about the process of shooting a video.

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Well, I got to tell you the process for the video is, is a, it's a very collective process.

And we got so many amazing people involved with trace at the helm, our friend at 12, 12 productions kind of helping us lay out the storyboard for it, multiple locations, multiple great people involved, but really.

You just got to take the days and the time to make sure you're getting your shots right.

Having fun is super, super key when you're making a video.

And honestly,

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

you

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

can't fake that.

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

No, no.

Just having the

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

right people behind you makes

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

it all the better.

And he picked out.

He said, we're going to go here.

We're going to go here.

He's storyboarded out.

The guy's a wizard.

He knows what he's doing.

Yeah,

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

I do.

We've done commercials like it, of

Stress the Mind (known Vandals)

course,

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

too.

Very dry, very tight, not fun.

And then we've also done, we've done some other stuff in bars with, like you guys with YouTube.

And it's just so much more fun, it's real.

It's rich.

Yeah,

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

yeah, production seems to just be a little more loose with the YouTube stuff.

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Just a little.

Oh yeah, a little bit.

Yeah, you can.

You know, so you let Johnny smoke weed and he appreciates that yeah, just a little looser there.

I have no idea where

John Mino

that came from

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

I don't smoke weed

Todd

Yeah, who's the one who always smoked weed?

John Mino

Okay,

Todd

Mrs.

John Mino

Schmidt of

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

great.

John Mino

That

Trent Magic (known Vandals)

Jim Schmidt (The Mayor)

Yeah.

It's a lot of steps.

Wow.

Can I play their song with touch tunes?

I'd love to play it when I'm out having adult beverages this weekend.

Band Member 3

Rap Performer

From out the Dairyland, you know it, yeah, the chiefs at stake Right up north, tucked in, right next to the Great Lakes This is the place we call home, never afraid to admit it Back in 1848 is where our stories begin, and so sit and listen Let me tell you all just what we're about, like stuff for hunting and fishing We'll never leave home without, and throughout all of the seasons We're prepared for a blizzard, flat bed, full with dry, for the roughest conditions Then right back to the fishing, we even do it all night We drill a hole and drink a brew, believe me, this is the life And at night on every Friday, we be frying the fish

Kickin' back at supper clubs, rakin' out the cribbids Never missin' a game, my time to cheer on the pack Golden Bruins, Bucks and Badgers, gettin' rowdy in stance So here we go, y'all, time to spell it out with us Raise it up on what you're holdin' to the place that we livin' Dub I S C O N S I N We rock up all of y'all, y'all amongst some friends Dub I S C O N S I N Have it snow fall, please it's never end Dub I S

These are my people and I'm thinking they're all second to none From Eagle River headed south on Highway 41 From all the east to the west and everyone in between If you're from Wisconsin then we all unite as a team Love her my factory workers and farmers making it happen Keep us running in supply for weekends up at our cabins And the old fashions makes it up you never go wrong Serpent cheese curds

We're the side of ranch and it's on Sing along around the fire Pressing up budgie pies And if you offer up abroad it's never gonna be denied And we sidle with the blaze on your camera We're quick, they're all our friends And all are welcome with the drinks that we sip So if you're taking a trip, we hope you stop on vibe We hold the door open for you and we'll say From the days gone by Pressing time and beyond Meanwhile in Wisconsin, everyone sing along Dub I S C O N S I N

Yeah, it's special shout outs to

Radio Host 3

Ranch dressing.

Band Member 2

It ran just huge here.

And I don't know why.

It's great.

It's awesome.

I don't know.

It's good and everything.

Very

Radio Host 1

cool.

You can visualize the whole stadium jamming

Band Member 2

into this.

Oh, my God.

We

Radio Host 1

spelled Wisconsin out in a fun way.

A number of times in a fun way.

Oh, absolutely.

Yeah, that could be.

Yeah, and then they got to the hotel.

Radio Host 3

Yo, yo, yo,

Band Member 3

Ricky and Appleton.

Hey.

So

Radio Host 3

great.

Band Member 3

We see you, Ricky.

That was great.

We see you.

Yeah, that's a lot of fun.

The chorus was our favorite part, because we wanted something that was like, anthem-worthy.

When you think of an anthem, you want to be like, singing along and just having a great

Radio Host 2

time.

Some of those songs back in the 80s where there was like, and I think one of them was, we built the city, and

Band Member 3

it was based in

Radio Host 2

San Francisco.

But there were different versions depending on the market and radio you worked for.

We need to have them do an edit for us that mentions Mino

Radio Host 3

in

Radio Host 2

the mail.

Radio Host 3

Absolutely.

That was the big thing

Radio Host 2

with,

Radio Host 3

we

Radio Host 2

gotcha.

Radio Host 3

What's her name?

Um, the song was Nebraska.

What's your name?

Lady Gaga.

Band Member 3

Okay.

She

Radio Host 3

did.

She did Nebraska.

She did Wisconsin.

Band Member 3

Oh, nice.

You know, you know, that

Radio Host 3

whole

Band Member 3

song is a whole

Radio Host 3

different

Band Member 3

meaning that when you hear her say that was a while ago, I

Radio Host 3

actually

Band Member 3

almost forgot.

I know, right?

She's been around longer than we think.

I know,

Radio Host 2

right?

Jim, you met her, right?

I did.

Then he got it, she had soft hands.

No, no,

Radio Host 1

no, that was soft hands.

No, that wasn't.

I met her the same day I met the Dolly Lama.

And he had the soft hands.

He had the soft hands.

Anyway, I got the soft hands.

The number one thing he

Radio Host 3

comes away having meeting the Dolly Lama, he had the softest hands.

It's like, really, what do you think he does?

Construction

Band Member 2

on the side?

Did it feel like a chinchilla?

Oh, yeah, he's a bricklayer.

He's like, air chinchilla.

By the

Radio Host 3

way, who's the tattoo artist?

Band Member 2

I am.

He is.

Band Member 3

You

Radio Host 3

both got amazing ink on your hands.

Band Member 3

That is

Radio Host 3

so cool.

Band Member 3

I got a little fish because I love trout fishing with

Band Member 2

my wife.

Yeah, see, we're the real deal.

Oh, I gotta mention my wife.

I love you, my wife.

Yes.

Wait a minute.

Wait a minute.

You just touched my stuff and I can't pass up.

Brook trout.

New Isco weekend, Saturday mornings at

Radio Show Host

8.

we're joined by the legend, the magic man, Don McCauskey.

I still remember when his name was called back in the day with Forest Greg and Forest Greg talked about this great young quarterback from the University of Virginia.

Now, Madge, one thing you and I talked about one other time, you on draft day, it was an entirely different entity in 1987, 88, 89, that whole era of you and drafting guys like you and the Bryce Pops of the world and everybody.

And they all say the same thing, man, it was nothing like it is today as far as an event.

What do you, what do you remember about those days magic?

Don Mikowski

Oh, no, it was, uh, I mean, it was the first, you know, I think the, I don't know when the draft first became televised at ESPN, like, I don't know in the early 80s.

Yeah.

But, uh, I remember, um, yeah, there, there was, uh, I didn't know where I was going to get drafted because, um,

I got injured again in my senior year in Virginia.

I separated my shoulder, so my stock went pretty far down.

I didn't know how far it was going to go down.

I still went to the combine.

Wasn't still 100%.

Couldn't do the bench press, so stock went down.

So I didn't know where I was going to draft it.

So my draft day was very lonely.

I was in my college apartment all by myself.

The draft started at 8 a.m.

on ESPN and they only did the first six rounds televised.

So back then they had 12 rounds in the draft.

So I watched the first round and I saw four quarterbacks were taken.

Vinny Testa Verde, Kelly Stover, Harbaugh, and Chris Miller.

And I'm like, well, man, I'm writing the same bracket as those guys.

four guys already taken.

I got to be taken pretty soon.

I got to be coming up next.

And second round went by, third round went by, fourth round.

The draft went off the air after the sixth round.

I still didn't get my number.

I mean, still didn't get my call.

So I was just hanging out in my apartment all by myself.

Finally, it got to be 10 PM.

I'm like, I got to go to bed, man.

That was a long day.

I was exhausted.

I was so disappointed.

frustrated, sad, whatever, tears, all that stuff.

I didn't get my call till like midnight.

You know, and forest Greg called me and said, yeah, they were actually, you know, it's funny.

I got, I got a call from the Buffalo bills in the sixth round by Bill Polin.

Okay.

And they wanted to take me in a sixth round as it and turn me into a free safety.

Oh my, which was your

Radio Show Host

hometown though, your hometown Buffalo bills.

Don Mikowski

Yeah.

Yeah.

So, you know, they had Jim Kelly and Frank Reich and I'm like,

Yeah, I'll pass on the free safety, even though it sounded, I mean, no doubt I could have played.

I played some, you know, a lot of it in high school and then you could practice some, even in college, my freshman year, but I was like, I'll pass on the free safety.

I'm going to be a quarterback in there, said, okay, you know.

So yeah, I got a call in the 10th round, midnight, and gotta be honest, I wasn't overly excited at all.

because I just was so disappointed.

So when Forest said, we're going to take it next week at 10th round, I said, okay, great.

Um, he said, uh, you know, well, we're really excited to have you.

I was like, I bet 10th round.

Yeah.

So, but, but when I hung up the phone and, um, you know, they told me what I'd have to fly out for mini camp in a couple of days, I just couldn't wait to get to mini camp because I mean,

Even though I got drafted so late, there was no question in my mind that I was as good as any of the first rounders that got drafted.

They just had no idea.

And I proved it.

You know, I mean, the guys in the first round were, I mean, Harbaugh, Chris Miller, Tessa Verde and Kelly Stoffer.

Yeah.

So he never played when I got to Green Bay.

You know, yeah, when I got there, I was, I was excited to compete.

And as soon as, as soon as I got in the mini camps, I saw the other quarterbacks there and I said, I'm making this team.

I'll probably start.

And I didn't know how soon, but I definitely was confident that was my attitude.

Radio Show Host

I have to ask though, did you, because I've sat with guys like at the University of Arizona where I covered them and University of Michigan and different places where I've, you know, you go to their apartments and their dorms, actually it was back then usually, and you'd sit there on the phone and ring and everybody would be, okay, hang on, don't answer.

And everybody'd get their cameras fired up or all set in the mics and be there like, hello?

Yeah, no uncle Bob.

I haven't been drafted yet.

I don't know Bob.

Uncle Bob.

I gotta keep the line open.

I'll call you when it's done.

They must have got 12 calls like that during the course of the day.

Did that happen to you at all?

It didn't.

Don Mikowski

It didn't.

Because I was just there in my apartment all by myself.

I had a roommate, but he wasn't there that weekend.

He lived in a couple hours away in DC.

I was there all by myself and I just wanted to be by myself because I had no idea what was going to happen.

I didn't want to have any friends hanging around waiting for a celebratory call because it didn't come.

A good thing I didn't.

So you got the call?

Probably the only person I would call my parents every couple hours and just tell them, yeah, no call yet.

And that was probably about it, the only conversations I had.

Yeah, it was a pretty lonely day for sure.

Advertisement Voiceover

So after you got the call from force, the first call you made was to your parents.

Don Mikowski

Yeah, but not until the morning.

I mean, I got, I got called.

I think it was past midnight, you know, and I just waited until the morning.

I called him first thing and, um, well, it's your dad being a

Radio Show Host

firefighter.

Don Mikowski

He must have

Radio Show Host

thought there's a four alarm someplace.

Don Mikowski

Yeah.

I mean, but, you know, I grew up in Buffalo, New York, getting drafted by Green Bay.

I was used to the cold and, uh, you know,

with my Polish background, you know, the first day I was pulling into Wisconsin, I go through Pulaski and I'm like, hey, I might fit in pretty well.

Advertisement Voiceover

Hey,

Don Mikowski

let me ask you,

Advertisement Voiceover

Johnny

Don Mikowski

and I were

Advertisement Voiceover

talking, Johnny and I were talking, a lot of people aren't coming.

I mean, right?

We're a little

Radio Show Host

disappointed.

16 it looks like of the potential.

I don't know how many they had, 40 possibles.

Advertisement Voiceover

And do you think it's because of sitting in the room?

Not getting drafted cameras on you, or do you think it's just they want to be with their friends in a different hotel room?

Don Mikowski

Yeah, some some some players, you know families Just want to be at home with their family.

They don't they don't need the hype They don't need the glam, you know and it all blinged out in their ice and their diamonds and their you know

$75,000 watches and all this stuff, glasses, the worn on stage.

Everyone wears glasses.

I mean, I don't get it.

It's just a little too much for some players.

Some players don't need that, and they just rather be home with their family.

There's nothing wrong with it.

It's a big day for a lot of these first-rounders.

It's a huge day, so it's exciting.

But, you know, all that kind of glitz and glamour, it's going to be kind of weird and green, babe.

It doesn't.

I mean, if you go to New York or Vegas or someplace, you know, it kind of fits the green, babe.

That's not really the style, you know, so.

But that's what goes on.

And hey, these kids deserve it.

They worked hard and they're all going to be first rounders.

So if they want to be there, they should enjoy it.

And it's going to be a special day for all of them.

But yeah.

He's not

Radio Show Host

he's definitely not

Don Mikowski

and now

Radio Show Host

Jackson was at the quarterback from Mississippi Dax

Don Mikowski

Oh Jackson dark Jackson.

Radio Show Host

Yeah, he's not gonna be there because we just had the guy in the editor from Lindy's draft preview and he said guys guys do pay attention And I know sometimes it's all BS, but you know projections of whatever and he's

been projected at like 28 or 30 or possibly second day.

So he backed out because again, we talked to him and we joke about it because I became good friends.

I just mentioned with with a show with Brady Quinn's sister, Laura Hawke, AJ.

OK.

And I was joked about, you know, it started out with Brady Quinn.

Boy, I'll tell you what, waiting for a call from the Lions and the Detroit Lions select, you know, Joe Blow and his girlfriend, who was all over him at first.

incrementally started getting further away.

It

Don Mikowski

could be an embarrassing day for sure.

Frustrating, embarrassing.

I mean, like, no, what happened to Aaron, you know, right?

Advertisement Voiceover

Right.

Don Mikowski

You know, went for number one, 24.

I mean, that's, I mean, still being drafted 24 is awesome.

You know, but, uh, but from being number one, I guess, and just being overlooked, I don't know, but it is, it could be disappointing, but, um,

But you just don't think these

Advertisement Voiceover

guys with these diamond glasses and watches are going to blend in the Green Bay.

That's

Don Mikowski

what

Advertisement Voiceover

I said.

Don Mikowski

It's going to look ridiculous.

It'll look great at Nicky's style, man.

That's not what's happening, man.

You know, when you're going out and Laura lying stuff, that's not how you do it.

Radio Show Host

Hey, man, I've got to ask, what kind of a bonus did you get?

Don Mikowski

Oh, a big one.

Big one.

$10,000.

I had $10,000 signing bonus and my base salary was $65,000.

My rookie year.

People don't realize

Advertisement Voiceover

that.

That wasn't that long ago

Don Mikowski

either.

Well, that was the minimum salary.

I mean, as a 10th rounder, it's pretty much the same salary as a free agent, but I did get a $10,000 signing bonus.

So when I became the starting quarterback in the second game of the season, I was making $65,000 base, right?

But then we went on strike and I missed four paycheck.

That's a quarter of the year, man.

Probably made about 35,000.

Oh my goodness.

Yeah.

It's hilarious.

But, um, you know, a couple years later, I did a little better.

There's a reason

Radio Show Host

when we used to ask you guys to come on our TV shows that would give you a gift certificate for like a oil change or something at Arby's.

You guys would take those certificates.

Nobody turned them down.

That was good stuff

Don Mikowski

back.

That was good stuff.

Yeah.

That was different times, man.

Different times for sure.

You know, I tell some of the old stories like just the difference between what the players have nowadays and like just the players in the 80s and 90s, what we had, it's just, it's night and day.

These players have no idea how good they have it.

And, you know, rightfully so they should.

I mean, it's such a big business now.

I mean,

But the facilities and everything that goes on right now, the salaries, the rules, oh my gosh, they have everything going for them, their pensions.

It's ridiculous how nice they have it now.

And yeah, I'm not jealous.

I'm envious.

I mean, I think it should be like that.

you know, but back in the day, man, it was, it was, it was a lot different, a lot more humbling.

Radio Show Host

You know what, Matt?

We

Don Mikowski

actually

Radio Show Host

had, we had Randy right on a couple of weeks ago and we asked him about that.

And he said, you know, he said, you think you'd feel that way, but he said, I'll be honest here, that my first year I was talking with Terry Bradshaw, who came in to do one of the games or whatever.

And Randy and like his first year was making more than Terry Bradshaw made the last year he won a Super Bowl.

So

Don Mikowski

it's

Radio Show Host

like, you kind of got

Don Mikowski

to

Radio Show Host

put it in perspective sometime, wouldn't you agree?

Don Mikowski

No, it's all relevant.

Right.

It is.

And, you know, back then, I mean, after my third year, you know, when I was, I was the first pocket player, I think, to make over a million dollars a year.

So that was the start of something exciting there as far as player salaries.

But compared to now, it's just, you know...

It's just so, so, so different.

I definitely was appreciative back then.

You know what I mean?

Oh yeah.

I was able to buy my own car.

Yep.

I still, my first two years, I still had a roommate live by my partner, you know, Don Bracken.

We split, we split the rent on our little townhouse on Pilgrim way.

It was $500 a month.

It was $250 each a month.

Radio Show Host

And I can tell, I can tell people it was decorated with match.

Yeah, I know.

I know a shoulder mount of a buck.

Nice.

No, it was

Don Mikowski

a jackal.

It was a jackalope.

Yeah, I know part.

Grab it down.

You can call it a jackalope.

Radio Show Host

Yeah.

Those are fun days.

I've never seen teams closer together.

You guys, Robbie Bosco, Bracken, Eldale Greco, some of the I've never, I don't know if guys will ever be closer as a team because you guys almost bonded that way.

Wouldn't you agree?

Don Mikowski

Yeah, we did.

I remember last time I was on your show, we talked about the story.

We were in a bowling league.

My rookie year with all those guys on our Tuesdays or the day off, we were in a bowling league.

Crazy.

You would never see that now, but it was fun back then.

It was a different time.

We just stood in.

And the guys hung out in public a lot more.

There wasn't social media.

There weren't cameras.

There weren't videotaping guys wherever they went.

So we were able to blend in way more and just enjoy ourselves a lot more than they can, I think, these days, for sure.

Radio Show Host

Well, Don Mikowski, we sure enjoy having you on, my friend.

Kent, thank you enough for your great insight and always being a big part of our show.

Truly appreciate it.

Don Mikowski

Hey, love coming on with you guys.

Take care, my

Radio Show Host

brother.

All right, take care.

As Wisconsin as a game of cribbage.

Music Commentator

You've heard songs about truck drivers many times, so it's told me.

Now they pull out a pitch bird for six days on the road, about the Feather River Canyon.

Todd Michaels

Hey, welcome back!

Mino in the Mare and the Michael Freedman!

It is.

Draft day, ladies and gentlemen.

Just checked in with cheese curd, Nick.

He's getting the grill fired up out there.

He's got his cheese curds and his brats and his cheeseburgers and everything cheese.

He's gonna be at the stadium view.

We got unbelievably amount of things taking place in the area.

Special thanks to Don Mikowski for joining us and Michael Freeman, who is just one of the good guys that we've met during the course of doing this show.

And then don't be asked, Mike.

You're just my good guy.

I mean, well, it's cool what you do, but it's just.

Well,

Michael Freeman

thank you.

I think it's been now about a year.

I think since the first time I was on the show and we started talking about the draft last year and the excitement around it and how, uh, how, how people were going to rent out their homes and all that good stuff.

So.

You helped a lot of people.

We've been to three of your homes, haven't we?

Yeah, we've been to two.

You've been to two.

You were on at Greening Gold on True Lane and then over at... On Shadow, wasn't it?

Yeah, Shadow Lane on... Great place as both of them.

Yeah, and listen, we anticipated a lot more people staying in our homes, but listen, I think it's a great day for Green Bay.

It's a great day for the NFL to come to, like I said, the...

I think the cathedral of football, you know, I mean, to me that's, you know, I've been going to Packer games since I was five years old, 1970.

No kidding.

Yeah.

So we started, you know, I grew up in Milwaukee and we started going to Packer games at county stadium.

We had tickets there and then.

Todd Michaels

Worst place ever to watch your football

Michael Freeman

game.

Yeah.

It was pretty, pretty bad, but, uh, but you know, my, my dad and my uncle were very involved with having season tickets up here too.

My dad was very good friends with Ray Nitschke.

No kidding.

Yeah.

So, you know, uh,

great book, Meen on Sunday.

Amanda

So one of

Michael Freeman

the best.

But yeah, it's, you know, it's an exciting day for Green Bay.

And I'm glad, you know, we've been a part of it.

And doing the best we can to help people, you know, with what they wanted to do with their homes.

And, but yet now time to celebrate and have some fun this afternoon.

Todd Michaels

Well, not only that, just one quick thing though, as far as like

I mean, people still want to come to Green Bay where there's Packer games.

You guys will still be renting some of these places.

Michael Freeman

Oh, yeah.

Absolutely.

You know, from, from the draft, I mean, we've picked up some, some new homes for the upcoming Packer years, some really nice houses around Lambeau field.

So we'll be renting those out.

And then, you know, obviously we have all of our leisure homes in Door County and North Woods.

We're growing that portfolio as well.

And yeah, we, we, we're expecting it.

We're going to have a great summer.

So we're excited by what we're doing.

Todd Michaels

And it's really cool that you're so professional.

I mean, Jim talked about that.

like with his house and everything.

It's like, if somebody comes through you guys, you don't have to worry about some scheister kind of

Jim

whatever, whatever.

No, no, no.

Just when you came in this morning, the gift baskets, the welcome gift baskets.

So nice.

I mean, just local stuff, right?

Cheese, sausage.

Michael Freeman

Yeah, you know.

And the

Jim

coffee you put out, I love your coffee.

I said that last time.

Michael Freeman

Oh yeah.

Jim

And just, those are the little things and the background checks you do.

And I know people have asked you to rent their houses and you're like, yeah, that's not really our quality.

I mean, it's nice that you're known as

not up-up scale, but upper-scale homes.

Michael Freeman

Yeah, you know, we just want to provide a great experience.

You know, the management, I think I've talked about this, the management of the home is one thing, but we are in the hospitality business.

We don't run a hotel, but we run 150 small hotels, if you think about it, from the standpoint of the number of homes we manage.

And so creating those guest experiences, and you know, I brought those gift baskets in just to show you what, you know, that little touch, we were talking about this this morning, I was talking about with someone this morning.

that it's not the size of it and it's not the amount of the gift.

It's like the experience and the memories that's created that say, oh gosh, you know, when we stayed there, we had those local meat sticks and this local cheese and this local mustard.

And we just really had a great time.

And I think that's such a big part of it.

Todd Michaels

The only disappointing aspect of something that didn't happen, Johnny Juice.

Well,

Michael Freeman

I know we talked about Johnny juice.

Well, we'll have to work on Johnny juice.

I

Jim

would say that Nick fail I Should say a Nick a cheese curd Nick who is like kind of our street vendor, but has his ear to the ground He does he just hears everything and knows everything.

Amanda

He did

Jim

call and say that Austin Strabo Airport one of their busiest

Amanda

days

Jim

was this morning Yeah, that's good to hear right because I think yeah, some of us were concerned that

Is this gonna happen like we were hoping it was gonna happen?

Yeah, we're gonna hit 250 300 and it's like even last night And then somebody that taught us when we were talking about that he's like is there too much going on You know and we're not we're not feeling it because it's so spread out right it could be and but on the other hand if the airport I mean there's only really two airports right us and Appleton so if they're busy, that's a good sign if

this parking takes off and I know the shuttles in Appleton lady called yesterday and said they're filling up, which is awesome to hear that.

So that's good news.

So, you know, we'll see.

Today's the day.

Michael Freeman

Whatever it is, it's going to be here.

And, uh, and, you know, I'm, I'm excited to go this afternoon.

I've got my friends coming in from Chicago and Madison, although my Bears fans, I'm, you know, they're, they're good friends, but I told them not to wear any bears gear.

Cause I said, they might, they might get, you know,

Todd Michaels

why do I feel like anybody coming in from Chicago is going to be here?

to party?

Michael Freeman

Yeah, they are.

Trust me.

Trust me.

They'll be here about one and then our shuttle, our private shuttle, aka Lisa, is dropping us off at the draft around two.

Poor

Jim

Lisa.

That starts at noon today.

Michael Freeman

Hey, tell her to make me some more quiche.

Oh, you know, she made us quiche for, so we're all staying at her house.

And she's making us some quiche and she's got some breakfast pizzas for us as well.

Todd Michaels

Those are, I've never had quiche before and what she brought in that

Michael Freeman

day was just incredible.

It's really good.

And seriously, poor Lisa, hashtag poor Lisa.

Yeah, no, she's amazing and she's such an integral part of our company and everything she does for us.

I mean, it's incredible, the public relations and just the,

media side of things and just to support you give some like I'm

Todd Michaels

going to throw that out there.

If somebody somebody might be getting off a plane in Austin Straubel right now, they're getting in a cab.

They're driving around.

If they still are looking for a place,

Michael Freeman

what have you got

Amanda

available?
