In a world filled with chaos and confusion, in an echo chamber filled with lies and deception, comes a ray of light.

Live from Madison, Wisconsin,

It's John and Gordy in the morning on 92.7 WMDX.

Welcome again to another great show, John and Gordy in the morning.

I'm John Peterson.

Dom is at the controls and Gordy is not here today.

He's taking the day off and tomorrow as well.

Our guest this morning is Matt Rothschild.

Civic Media's own pundit.

Matt Rothschild

Well, I'm delighted to be here with you, John.

He knows all.

It's a beautiful morning, you know, driving in on it.

Yeah.

John Nolan Dry, which you can still do easily, though.

It's

gonna get pretty clogged

Matt Rothschild

soon enough.

Yeah, it's

gonna be bad.

Matt Rothschild

But there was just a gorgeous full moon out there at about 5.30 in the morning over Lake Wingra spectacularly.

Yeah.

Wow.

43 degrees high, around 62 today, a little tonight, around 38.

It's a very slight chance of rain.

I doubt that's gonna happen.

Certainly wants my lawn.

Mom Nature wants my lawn to die in front of me, and that's fine, you know, yeah.

You know, the execution is going on in my law.

You know, yes, last year I had, you know, we have a border collie and I go out in the yard and I play and we had worn out.

the lawn because it was so dry for so long.

The grass was just, you know, very, it was like sticking up out of hard clay and we just mowed it off with our feet.

And this year I'm really, really trying to not do that again.

And it all grew back.

I don't know how it grew back.

You know, I bought a big bag of seed and it said instant seed, you know, anywhere, anytime.

threw that down and And as soon as I threw it down that night it rained down poured and all the seed just went down a river

at the

Kathryn Lake

bottom of my

yard.

I'm just like, well, you know, I hope some of it took hold.

You know, I wasn't going to worry about it.

I wasn't going to get out there and try to redo it.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, I don't think I've mowed in a month.

Yeah.

Yeah.

It's crazy, isn't it?

So, uh, this weather is just something else.

I didn't even know what the birds are thinking.

You know, I mean, every once in a while, you know, we, we either put water in the bird bass or we don't.

Now I really like to keep that.

bath water nice and clean.

I don't know if birds notice that stuff.

Matt Rothschild

Oh sure they do.

Do they?

Yeah and I think there are a lot of birds migrating south last night with a clear sky so I'm expecting to see this morning when I get home some uh myrtle warblers I still call myrtle warblers the the new name is yellow romped warbler which

Oh, yeah, I hated that.

Matt Rothschild

I hate that change.

Not a great description, but anyway, there are a lot of warblers and kinglets coming down and someone saw Junko already, which is a harbinger, a winner.

Oh, and maybe some purple finches coming down.

There was a great description of a purple finch from Roger Torrey Peterson.

It was, you know, the guy who had the bird book that was my Bible growing up as a bird watcher.

And he described a purple finch as a finch that's been dipped in a raspberry sauce.

Wow, we could have a finch dipped in cranberry bog water.

Matt Rothschild

That would work.

That's more

Wisconsin.

There you go.

Matt Rothschild

But we got raspberries here too.

Do we have Robbins migrating as well?

Matt Rothschild

They do.

They're gathering in large numbers.

Now I'm seeing a ton of Robins.

But yeah, they'll leave.

Most of them leave.

A few Robins will winter over

if

Matt Rothschild

there's if there's running water somewhere.

OK.

Matt, I got to ask, what is your favorite bird?

Matt Rothschild

You know, I love a Scarlet Tanager, which comes through in May and a few of them will nest here.

But usually they go further north.

It's a red bird with black wings.

It's just gorgeous.

OK.

You know, one day when we have the studio updated, we did put the table.

top in and I'm very impressed with that but we don't have all the other things the technology in here and I'd love to have a picture of that you just described a fantastic looking bird

Wouldn't it be great to just pop that up on the screen and show everybody as they're driving into work?

A lot of people drive, you know, watching their phone, YouTube or wherever they find our video and try to drive at the same time.

I know it's difficult, but please do that for us.

And you can find the station on Civic Media, just pick WMDX and then text us or voice note us.

We don't get any voice notes.

Yeah.

Supposedly.

Gen Z is doing the voice note thing, right?

Yeah, I guess so, but...

What's happened?

I don't know.

Recently, we haven't really got... I mean, I think the first few months when that voice note came out, we got a ton, and then as of this past month, nothing.

Yeah.

Radio silence.

Well...

Matt Rothschild

Well, you can listen on the app too.

You know, I listen on the

app.

I listen all the time, yeah.

On the app, so I mean you can get us anywhere.

It doesn't fade in or out or anything like that

Matt Rothschild

I

always work at radio stations that fade in and out Madison I don't know why I'm attracted to those stations.

I I'm there for the underdog.

That's that's what I'm there for We got some you know quick stories to cover this morning I always go over the list of new stories that have popped up and There's some really really scary ones.

We've got

a big special coming up a little after seven o'clock.

Unintentional, but all of a sudden I'm doing stories on Tom Tiffany.

And Tom was a representative at the state legislature and then he moved on to Congress very easily.

He didn't have to debate or do anything.

You know, he's in a very safe district and they just voted him in.

Tom Tiffany, vote him in.

You know you didn't have to do it doesn't lift a finger this guy basically took a a plow and just ran over all our beautiful beautiful country landscapes

and put in minds and he wanted to, the sand pits, you know, he loves the sand pits and he loved putting sand pits near elementary schools where the silica fills the air for

Kathryn Lake

those

children.

And then they thought, that was a good idea.

Let's send him into Congress.

And now he's coming back weirdly and oddly as a governor candidate.

And I've just,

Matt Rothschild

the likely.

Republican nominee too.

Yeah.

Yeah.

He's a strong candidate.

He's number one now.

He just threw his hat in the ring and became number one.

Of course, you know, Schoenenberg, I believe that's his name, Schoenenberg.

He, he's kind of wacky.

Now, who comes right out and says, yeah, I think we should bring in the National Guard in this day and I back Trump up no matter what he does with immigration.

I'll take him out of the schools.

I'll take people and families out of their homes.

It's a very strange campaign, but if that works, I guess, you know.

Matt Rothschild

Well, everyone's angling for the Trump endorsement and they'll do anything, and that's the sad state of the Republican Party right now.

It really is, but you'll find out after seven how close Tom Tiffany is to trying to be like Trump, oddly.

And I'm wondering if, and we'll pose this question at the top of the seven o'clock hour is, you know, how many other candidates, how many other candidates throughout the nation will be using the same Trump formula of fear, immigration, and, and, you know, just, I don't know, a strong iron fisted way of controlling the government.

Well, I mean, the promise of it,

Matt Rothschild

you know, that's what.

Trump did.

I mean, he ran on...

anti-immigrant, anti-trans, and now he's governing as an authoritarian.

It's just disgraceful.

It's disgusting.

It's horrifying.

It really truly is horrifying to see what's going on in Chicago.

I mean, it's so close to us.

And of course, we had a few apprehensions here in Madison and in Wisconsin.

And those were ugly experiences as well.

And you can't do much about it.

You can't really fight these people.

You can't push them.

You can't stand next to them.

You can't obstruct them.

They will take you away.

They will arrest you.

Matt Rothschild

Though there's that interesting video I saw in Chicago where there was an ice guy who was manhandling a Latino and the citizens surrounded the ice guy and made him finally give up and go away in his car.

There are ways to resist, but what we are watching right now is one dressed rehearsal after another for martial law or for the insurrection

act.

There you go, yes, yes.

They keep using the word insurrection

Matt Rothschild

all the time.

Trump used it like five times on Monday, once yesterday, I mean.

They're driving that point home so they can use the insurrection act.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, they're getting us ready.

Yeah.

And of course, I thought at first I thought they were using it in order to diffuse the whole impact of insurrection simply because of January 6th.

They want to just kind of wipe that clean.

It's not a big deal, insurrection.

Everybody

Matt Rothschild

uses the word.

No, I think they succeeded on that

already.

Yeah, they did.

They succeeded on that.

Let's go to the phone lines now.

We've got Matt out Middleton, my hometown.

Go ahead, Matt.

Good morning, guys.

I also love birds.

I guess there used to be a lot more of them in our skies, but a lot of species are declining.

But I wanted to bring to people's attention that Senate hearing with Pam Bondi, I thought something was fairly interesting here where Senator Whitehouse asked if there were any pictures that had Trump in compromising positions and she attacked everyone and did not answer the question.

And we all know that there's been plenty of pictures of Trump and Epstein in public.

So that would lead me to believe that the pictures she's covering for have him with young girls.

We all know he's a sexual predator, so it's easy to think that he wouldn't mind raping young women either.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, I think there's were a populous young women.

Yeah, that's what Senator Whitehouse.

Do you

think it would change anybody's mind though, considering a lot of these MAGA have drank in so much of the Kool-Aid?

They just do the mental jiu-jitsu of just, you know, making it all less propaganda.

Yeah.

And even if they see a picture, they'll just say it's AI.

So are we in that bad of a place that the Epstein files just might not even matter at the end of the day?

We're probably in that bad place.

I hate to say it, but I'll tell you what, you know, you brought it up and I think the next break.

The next segment would be a great place to play the highlights or lowlights of Pam Bondi.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, I mean it was extraordinary.

I don't know any witness who can testify before the Senate and be that sub.

recalcitrant and that obnoxious.

She wouldn't answer questions.

She would just level accusations at the senators themselves.

I mean, that's that's not the normal way that a witness at a Senate hearing, even a cabinet official is supposed to behave.

And yes, Senator Whitehouse said there was pictures of Trump with

Topless young girls young girls on this land.

Yeah, and she wanted she wanted to give a no and Matt and Middleton I also want to thank you for mentioning there are species declining especially bobble inks and meadowlarks grassland birds numbers are way down bobble inks.

Oh, yeah, there was a big big

bird name back in the 50s and 60s.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, I remember seeing him in in the northern suburbs of Chicago around farmland

where I grew up and it's been a long time since I seen a bobbling.

That's a fantasy of mine that we would create jobs for people to protect ecosystems and species, but capitalism doesn't do that.

No, we can't repair what capitalism damages.

Matt Rothschild

Though there are a lot of good groups working on that

problem.

Yeah, there are groups trying.

All right, Matt, thanks a lot for the call this morning.

I haven't seen sandpipers.

Do they hang out any place?

Matt Rothschild

Well, they're migrating through, too.

If you see a pond with mudflats, they love the mudflats.

So, yeah, you can still see some greater yellow legs.

They're coming through.

Sometimes there are some cooler sandpipers coming through.

I remember seeing a lot of them when I was a kid.

Yeah, spring, you know, May, early June,

late September.

Matt Rothschild

They're still around.

Well, it's good to hear.

Alright in just a few moments.

We'll we'll get to the lowlights of Pam Bondi in just a few moments right here on WMDX

92.7 John and Gordy in the morning Matt Rothschild is with us this morning Gordy is out today and tomorrow and Matt is Going to obviously teach me a few things.

He's been he's been doing this a lot longer than me, you know I I'm just getting my feet wet.

Oh I don't buy that for a minute But but here we are this is I don't know, you know

There's an historic element to all of this, watching what's going on in this country.

We have grown up in just one of the great countries in the world.

And I know the U.S.

I know what this country is like.

I grew up in it.

You and I both have grown up in this.

We just assumed it would be here.

And we are watching this is the this is the strangest time ever in our in my lifetime.

I'm sure probably in years to

Matt Rothschild

see

something like this happen.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, it's it is we're watching a car crash in slow motion here.

And even the legacy media, even the New York Times and the Washington Post are under playing the dangers right now.

I mean, when the President of the United States talks about the Insurrection Act, you would think it would be banner headlines.

Right.

Kathryn Lake

And it

Matt Rothschild

isn't.

It's just like, you know,

Sean Diddy Combs got sentenced and the president uses the insurrection

Kathryn Lake

act

Matt Rothschild

as something he might invoke.

I mean they're not equal in weight.

I mean there should be some sense that this is a real crisis for our democracy and we don't have that at least not at the high volume shrieking hair on fire that we need to

have.

Matt Rothschild

Right, and

to equate Charlie Kirk to Jesus or John F Kennedy or anyone else that has put together an incredible movement.

a humane movement, a movement of equality.

And to put him up in that category is so insulting, absolutely.

They don't get it.

You know, they think, oh, we're just trashing Charlie Kirk.

No, you know, you can't put somebody up there who has advocated for division and inequality.

You know, he says he has some friends that are black.

Well, that's good because those friends like Charlie Kirk and he likes people who likes him.

But he doesn't like black people.

It doesn't have any respect for them.

And these are the people, of course, that say they don't see color.

They see character.

And they always bring up color.

Always.

Every time.

You know, they don't see it.

But I don't see it.

I never even think about it, you know?

I mean, having grown up, losing...

job application after job application.

And I don't sit there and say, geez, I wonder if that person is a DEI hire or an affirmative action hire for us in our day.

But I never thought about it for a second.

I didn't care.

I competed for the job.

I didn't get it.

It could have been a personality conflict with the boss.

It could have been just about anything.

Who can make that decision except the people who are hiring?

And to call it in the question and make a big deal.

about it and put businesses on alert and threaten them with lawsuits because you think it was a DEI hire is just outrageous and very insecure for a lot of people out there that really don't qualify.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah, and certainly Trump has been, you know, one of his calling cards is racism.

That's what he plays on, you know, our worst sentiments.

Yeah.

And he's made a career out of it, unfortunately.

Uh oh.

Have I gone too long again?

I have, I apologize.

Time management, that is not my forte here.

Let me go through some big stories here, okay, real quick.

And we were gonna talk about, oh, we do have a call.

Oh, well, Catherine Lake is on the line.

Well, let's go to Catherine.

What do you got for us, Catherine?

Catherine's gonna be filling in tomorrow for Gordy.

I don't hear anything.

Catherine?

She's out.

Oh, she's all right, you know, I guess I'm doing a good job Here's this is the headline scientists make unexpected discovery that could transform farming as we know it and it's truly remarkable they're finding out that that crops that are fertilized with zinc help plants absorb nitrogen much easier

So they're thinking if they can maybe supplement, you know, fertilize in fields with zinc, they can utilize the nitrogen in the soil much better without putting all of that nitrogen in to, you know, overcompensate, you know, for erosion and water runoff and stuff like that.

So they're thinking of maybe putting zinc.

in some of these, uh, uh, fertilizers.

All right.

Kathryn Lake

So

that's one for Pam Yankee.

Yeah.

That's right.

Tomorrow morning.

Um, uh, the EPA is, this is the bad news.

The EPA is rolling back drinking water standards, uh, for PFAS.

Uh, yeah.

because they just don't see a reason why we need to roll that back at this point.

There are different PFOSs, I guess, and what they want to do is go to gauging and regulating the number of PFOS chemicals in your water.

So they think if you put a whole bunch of different PFOS chemicals in the water, that may make a difference in the health of drinking that water.

But if it's just one PFOS, ah, it's no big deal.

And these are quick perusals of these stories.

I apologize for it, but I just want to give you a heads up on some of

Matt Rothschild

this stuff.

And that's not a great one for people in Quani County and other places in Wisconsin who can't drink the water.

Well, that's right.

I mean, they're buying drinking water.

They're being supplied and a lot of people can't put in new wells because they can't afford it, but they have PFAS in their wells.

And I believe that the Republicans in the state do not want to pay for helping them put in new wells because somebody, and by the way, the Republicans do not want to blame any company or corporation for polluting the water.

And they are holding up funding for helping these people put in wells and help them pay for buying water.

Matt Rothschild

Well, they're

just paying back their contributors.

That's true.

That's true.

It's hard to believe that they can get away with something like that by not blaming anybody for the pollution, but they're doing it.

It's a little after 6.29.

We'll be back with more.

Idiocracy is coming up in just a few moments right here on John and Gordy in the morning.

As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point, a dumbing down, until humanity was incapable of solving even its most basic problems.

What an idiot.

The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.

What?

What the f*** is going on around here?

Holy

s***.

Idiocracy.

For the smartest guy in the world, you're pretty dumb sometimes.

All the time.

and we prove it each and every day with idiocracy right here on WMDX, 92.7.

John and Gordy in the morning, Matt Rothschild with us this morning, filling in, Civic Media's big voice of politics here, and Dom is handling the controls as usual tomorrow morning.

Gordy has also gone and Catherine will be my partner in the morning as well.

Now, we're going to be playing some clips, low lights.

of Pam Bonny's appearance as she was quizzed by a few senators and Matt and I were talking, I'm off the air here, about our impressions of the Democrats as they asked these questions of Pam Bonny.

What did you say?

Matt Rothschild

Well, I thought they were appallingly weak.

I mean, when someone is a witness, they're supposed to be respectful of the senator and let the senator ask the question and answer the question that the senator is asking, not sit there and attack the senator with ad hominem comments that their research team is produced for them.

And it was just, you know, where was the prosecutor or the.

you know these attorneys who are senators are going to stand up and say shut up you're my witness answer my question

right i mean get tough on her oh my god

and uh... jen sake pointed that out by the way uh... that she had all of these responses these takedowns of the democrats written down on sheets of paper on her tablet

Matt Rothschild

right uh... her staff and repair all these things instead of uh... you know how to answer the questions that might come just throw these uh... spitballs at at at one senator after another

that's right uh... in fact uh... i didn't actually notice that you know uh... and then

As I was watching a few of those questions again later on, I saw her looking down at these notes as she was reading them off the paper, repeating into the Democrats.

It was just, it was, it was, I don't know, it wasn't done well.

Nothing spontaneous

Matt Rothschild

about it.

No.

But it's straight out of, you know, the Trump playbook though.

Remember, he wants the people who work for him to be out there

insulting Democrats.

I mean, it started with Sean Spicer, the first press secretary, that very first day of inauguration, saying that this is the biggest inauguration in history, biggest crowd ever.

I'm not backing down.

Right.

Or Brett Kavanaugh, you know, saying, you know, going after the senators who were accusing him.

Uh, you know, and so Pam Bondi's just cut from the same cloth here.

Yeah, they found, uh, it was a great weapon that they can use against the Democrats.

So let's, uh, let's go to Pam Bondi and, uh, many of the ridiculous things she was able to say to these Democrats who just, uh, put up with it.

They shouldn't have, but let's listen.

They are going to transfer Texas National Guard units to the state of Illinois.

What's the rationale for that?

Yeah, Chairman, as you shut down the government, you voted to shut down the government, and you're sitting here, our law enforcement officers aren't being paid.

They're out there working to protect you.

I wish you loved Chicago as much as you hate President Trump.

The same lobbyist who met with your people basically got rid of the antitrust case.

Senator, I

don't think a lot of people like

Kathryn Lake

that you were out protesting

with Antifa.

What is the answer?

Did he take the mic?

Was she right?

If you work for me, you would have been fired, because you were

censured

by Congress for lying.

We can stipulate to all your personal attacks on the Democratic members of the committee.

Personal attacks?

A lot of those questions weren't even, like, gotcha questions.

I mean, what is the legal rationale for that?

Just answer, right?

They laid out a dam in case that Bondi has utterly corrupted and abused the justice system, the Justice Department, in unconstitutional ways, illegal ways, that really do strike at the very heart of our freedom as Americans.

Like, are you free from malicious prosecution?

And she had no real rebuttal for any of it other than this kind of intense performative

truculence.

You know, there's a tape, right, with Mr. Homan?

I mean, first of all, is there a tape that has audio and video of the transfer of the 50,000?

You would have to talk to Director Patel about that.

No, I'm talking

to you.

You're his

boss.

I don't know the answer,

Senator.

You

do know the

answer to that.

Don't call me a liar.

My question was, what became of the $50,000 in cash that the FBI delivered evidently in a paper bag to Mr. Homan?

Senator, I'd look at your facts.

I can see I'm not going to get a straight answer from you to a very simple question.

Do you know?

Actually there were a lot of people there that night.

That's a great picture.

With James Comey discussed at that dinner.

I love that picture.

That's a great picture and there were a lot of people there that night.

I was going to ask you if you received advice, instruction, or request from anyone at the White House to direct the department to engage in any investigations, prosecutorial actions, including decisions not to investigate or prosecute anyone.

I'm not going to discuss any conversations.

But then how about the truth social post on September 20th, 2025, in which the president said, we can't delay any longer PAM using your name, not bringing

criminal charges are killing our reputation, his words and credibility and then goes on to tell you to prosecute a member of this committee to prosecute the Attorney General of New York and to prosecute James Coney.

Do you consider that a directive to the Justice Department?

Senator Klobuchar, President Trump is the most transparent president in American history and I don't think he said anything that he hasn't said for years.

So

these are just some of the questions you refused to answer but or have answered with personal attacks on members of this committee.

You are asked whether you consulted with career ethics lawyers as you promised you would do during your nomination hearing when you approve the present receiving a $400 million gift from the Qataris.

You refused to answer that question.

You are asked who or what role you may have played

or who played the role in asking the Trump's name be flagged in any of the Epstein documents gathered by the FBI.

You refused to answer that question.

You were asked whether Holman kept the $50,000 bribe money.

You refused to answer that question.

You were asked whether Holman paid taxes on the $50,000 bribe money.

You refused to answer that question.

You were asked, did career prosecutors find insufficient evidence to charge James Comey?

You refused to answer that question.

You were asked how our military strikes on these boats

believable

in the Caribbean legal and you refused to even ask answer that question.

You were asked.

Excuse me.

Excuse me.

We went to

Matt Rothschild

Harvard Law, I believe.

Do you have a law degree?

I don't think that answer was well researched.

Matt Rothschild

So even there, though, I mean, I want a little louder voice.

You know, you can run down all of her evasions and dodges and distortions and lies and attacks, but at some point you've got to, you know, stand up and scream back and rather than have her just dominate that hearing like she tried to do

yesterday.

Yeah, there should have been a stronger response.

Matt Rothschild

He should have been angry.

Especially from Dick Durbin, who's the minority chair there.

I mean, we needed to hear more from him.

Right, especially what's going on in Chicago and everything.

You know, he is a reason to be angry about all of this and at least get some answers from Pam Bondi, but she is not answering anything.

Again, she's in charge and she doesn't know anything at all.

Right?

It was just crazy stuff.

Let's go to Catherine.

Finally, she's able to find some time here to give us a call here.

Johnny

Gordy.

You're very busy.

I get it.

And I'll be sitting in Matt's chair tomorrow.

Yes.

But

I wanted to ask Matt.

I am tortured, Matt.

This, what is going on bothers me as a citizen and as a broadcaster and as a member of the media.

I'm so angry.

I want to protest.

And I want to know, because you are a media person as well and you are a citizen, what are you going to do when on State Street, if they open an office and they are exiting that door and heading someplace in our city or in our county to go take somebody and you are there, what are you going to do?

Are you going to get arrested, Matt?

How are you feeling about your capabilities?

of protests, of presents, even just presents, as a member of the media.

Please help me know how I'm going to conduct myself.

Matt Rothschild

Well, Katherine, thanks for that.

And this is something I think about all the time, actually.

I do think we all need to protest.

There are no King's protests coming up on October 18th all across the country and in many places in Wisconsin, including in Madison.

So I urge people to join that.

But yeah, if I saw ICE people

you know, grabbing someone like I saw in that video in Chicago.

The first thing to do is to go outside, grab your cell phone, record what's going on, be a witness.

Try to support the person there any way you can non-violently.

Non-violence is crucial here.

But we need to stand up and support our neighbors who are being brutalized.

Support organizations like Vosis de la Frontera here in Wisconsin that's doing great work on immigrant rights.

And then I think, longer term, we need to think about how are we going to respond if and when Trump invokes the Insurrection Act and essentially

Kathryn Lake

declares

Matt Rothschild

martial law, which I think is coming soon.

He's given enough hints, Lord knows.

That's right.

And I think we need to think of what people did in Chile.

They would protest every night at seven o'clock or eight o'clock.

Everyone would bang a pot out their window.

And that might seem small, but there are larger things to think about doing too.

It's important to do those small things so that people don't think they're alone and that they're with that other people.

In fact, the majority of the people are resisting with little things like that.

And the other thing is.

We need to start planning for a general strike.

At some point, if Trump is going to impose martial law, people are going to have to just not let the economy run and respond in the only way that we can, and that would be with a general strike.

So those are my thoughts.

Has

that been done?

Have we done something

Matt Rothschild

like that before?

There were general strikes in 1919, for instance.

They do them all the time in France.

They do them all the time in Italy.

So it's not an unheard of tactic.

Wow, okay.

Wow.

Thank you.

I'll be thinking about all this Appreciate

you.

Thanks for the question.

Yeah, I appreciate that.

Yeah, you know in fact that brings up a really good point I was actually gonna ask you about this I have always been hesitant about endorsing getting out there and protesting I

I have been frustrated by protesters and the effect of protesting, although I was out there for Act 10.

I just, I don't know.

I think it's an older tactic that maybe has run its course.

Matt Rothschild

Well, I don't agree with that at all, John.

Well, tell me what you really think.

You know, protesting always work.

But if you don't protest, well, I'm not saying, I'm not

saying protesting in, in any form.

I'm just talking about getting out there in the pavement and, and.

protesting in the streets and on the sidewalks.

I'm not sure how effective that is.

Plus, I really, I really hate shame.

Shame.

I hate that so much.

That is so manby, pamby, that is so weak.

Please stop shouting shame.

I hate that, but don't do it for me.

Do it for yourself.

No.

Matt Rothschild

Well, but you can you can quibble with the slogans, but I do think it's important to get out in the street nonviolent.

I'm a student Howard Zins, author of a People's History of the United States who said, you know, social progress in the United States has happened because of one protest after another, whether it was the labor movement, the civil rights movement, the women's movement, the gay rights movement.

That's how we affect social change here.

So I'm a

fan

Matt Rothschild

of

that.

We're OK.

I have more to say about.

this, obviously John never stops talking.

We'll have more on protesting in just a moment right

Kathryn Lake

here in 92.7.

WMDX, John and Gordy in the morning, Dom at the Switch.

Gordy has gone for today and tomorrow and math Rothschild Civic media's voice on politics is here in the studio keeping his company and and holding me in check I We're gonna talk about protesting and my opinion on that in just a few moments But we've got Joe on the line right now.

I always love to hear from Joe.

What do you got for us today Joe?

Well, happy you if you've got to have somebody coming into the studio to have Matt riding shotgun with you that

must

be very very fun And

I

was throwing to the bird discussion that I am very fond of the black and white warbler just because

most birds are so beautifully technical or technicolor and then you have this bird that's black and white like an old noir movie or

Matt Rothschild

something.

Yeah, that's one of my favorite warblers too.

Tiny little bird that's black and white and actually a nut hatch climbs up and down on the trunk and branches of the trees rather than just flitting around.

beautiful, beautiful thing.

But I, I too wanted to throw in a few thoughts about the, the effectiveness of demonstrations and especially with this, uh, no Kings demonstration that's coming up on October 18th.

Um, it's hard to know what, how your actions are playing out.

If you, if you want to say shame, shame and hope that it'll affect Trump.

No.

unlikely, very unlikely.

But it may affect a whole lot of other people who are watching this demonstration go by and realizing that they aren't alone and realizing that there are other people that are upset enough about this to spend their time engaged in a march.

And I always go back to the old example of this small group of maybe 10, 12 women that were protesting every day at the start of the Vietnam War back in 63, 64, around that time.

And one of the times they were there dressed up looking nice because that's what you did back then for women.

You always, you know, look real nice as you were with your handmade sign saying, stop this war, another mother for peace.

And apparently Dr. Spock, who was just a huge, that pediatrician was just a huge phenomenon at that time, saw those women protesting in the cold and said to himself, if they can do it.

I can get involved.

Kathryn Lake

And it

was a major figure that then got involved in protest against the Vietnam War.

So it's unknown how your actions are going to play out and affect other people.

I would argue that the act of demonstrating is as important for the people

In that demonstration saying, I am doing something, this is a start, and now I can do more.

And for people watching, whether it's watching on TV or watching from the crowd, maybe they aren't participating.

But then understanding that there are worries and concerns.

And there are a lot of people with worries and concerns about where Trump is going to be going, not only just in terms of civil liberties, but just in terms of their own pocketbook.

It is hard out there.

It is real hard out there.

So that's my two cents on this, and it's a great subject for discussion.

Thanks a

lot, you

guys.

All right, thanks, Joe, and I stand corrected.

I guess I was wrong.

Matt Rothschild

Well, I do like the two points that I got from Joe's great call.

One is that you never know who you're going to be affecting if you're out there.

That is an excellent point,

Matt Rothschild

yes.

And the other one was how it's affecting you, the protester, because Scott Walker was a great organizer

for our side because he was, he was so outrageous and though

We had 110,000 people who weren't able to overturn Act 10.

Some of those folks in the 110,000 were new to protesting.

A whole new generation of people got their eyes opened about what this corporate right wing, anti-democratic small D movement is about.

A lot

of kids were out

Matt Rothschild

there

supporting their teachers.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah.

And a lot of those young people have now become leading activists in Wisconsin, like Angela Lang, for instance, of Black Leaders Organizing for Communities in Milwaukee.

She was a college student.

at the time.

And Walker showed her that, you know, we need to protest and this kind of politics is reprehensible and we've got to oppose it.

And there are hundreds of people, thousands of people who got politicized that way.

All right.

Well, I didn't know that Matt Rothschild would be our bright, shiny face this morning, but...

i'm i'm glad you're here mad and uh... correcting me of course you know brought up a whole bunches of examples of how other people protest in other countries what they do i find those to be very interesting angles on it and what i'm seeing now is that we can't push

an ice agent or a National Guard.

We can't push them.

We can't obstruct them.

They can make it seem like we're obstructing them and then arrest us.

That's why I think there's something wrong with the idea of protesting at this point.

They've countered us on this.

And that's where I was going with this argument.

We don't have a lot of time here.

So let's just go to the phones here.

We have Dick on the line.

Dick, what do you got for us?

Well, to this situation yesterday,

That wasn't an inquiry that you want to talk about waste of time that was a total waste of time And that all that was is an airing of her bosses grievances and the next time you have James Santel on Ask him if that was a court of law if she would have been in contempt of court.

Matt Rothschild

Yeah Yeah,

absolutely would have been

Matt Rothschild

yeah, I would think so too.

Yep

I mean, she was, thanks, Dick, for the call.

I mean, she was terribly contemptuous of the Senate as a whole and of the senators.

Personally, it was outrageous behavior, but that's what Trump expects of his...

Underlings.

Yeah, and

by the way Lawrence O'Donnell played a whole bunch of clips from that that I didn't see before and she was she was even worse than what we just heard in those clips that I gave you Let's go to the phone real quick here.

We have mark on the line.

What do you got for us mark?

We got less than a minute

Yeah, maybe we need to sing like we did in the Capitol because I was there I worked downtown at that point in time So I was able to walk a couple blocks away and sing at the Capitol at noon.

Yeah, and

Resurrect some of those protests on insert Trump's name to him get under his skin and maybe he'll uh finally decide he's had enough and Take time off from his treatments.

Uh That hopefully not like Elizabeth Bathory the blood colleges play in the blood of innocence.

Yeah

Matt Rothschild

Well, there's a lot of blood of innocence he's shedding already mark.

Thanks for the call.

They'll really appreciate hearing from you

Yeah, well, I was gonna do a Tom Tiffany thing next hour I want to kind of put that on hold because I have Matt here and I want to talk about this NSPM 7 What's the next angle that Trump is going to do to take over the rest of the country in all our cities?

So we'll be back with more right here on WMDX
