Time for another episode of This Week in Michigan Tech Athletics.

The show where we're going to go over everything Michigan Tech for this week.

I am your host, Sam Sears, and thank you for joining us here on MIX 93 and the U-Burk.

Michigan Tech had a pretty good week overall.

Leading things off with football, the team improved to Denon after a 48 to 27 victory over Midwestern State at Saturday, here at home at the Curly Stadium.

That was their sixth straight home opening victory for the

Huskies, who forced five turnovers in the game.

Volleyball went two for two at the Mountain Line Classic in Colorado Springs, they're now four to four overall.

The Huskies fell in five to UCCS and South Dakota Mines, and they beat St.

Edward's in five and swept Midwestern State.

Tex Soccer wrapped up non-conference play with a pair of losses on the road in Ohio.

On Thursday, Tech fell 3-1 to Northwood on Thursday and that one is the first goal they've had this season and they also fell 3-0 to Cedarville on Saturday.

Now looking on to the weekend, tomorrow is the start of the GLIAC for both Volleyball and Soccer.

Tomorrow at 5, women's Volleyball will be playing at Davenport and Tech Soccer will be having their first GLIAC match of the year against Segna Valley State right here at the Gurley Stadium at 6.

Saturday, Volleyball has their second match of the week against Segna Valley State.

That begins at 2.

And at the same time, football takes on Emporia State at 2.

And that game is something we'll broadcast right here on MIX 93.5 FM WKMJ with a 130 pre-game.

And then to wrap things up on Sunday, we have Shocker facing off against Grand Valley State at noon and they're still here at home at Curly Stadium.

So this is a great weekend to get out and support the soccer Huskies.

And sticking with soccer, Coach Melissa Cujar had her weekly press conference.

And the first thing she asked was how she felt the weekend went for her team.

Yeah, I mean, obviously not ideal with two losses, you know, our Northwood game.

We outshot him 19-9.

We just couldn't find the back of the net.

We missed a P.K.

early, which kind of was a bit of a damper on it.

Found a goal, which was nice off of a corner.

And then just gave up some goals we shouldn't have, a P.K.

at the end and all of that.

A game I thought we should have won.

The score doesn't kind of reflect the full game and how we out-possessed them.

And then, you know, going into Saturday's game, Cedarville's a really good team.

We had, you know, 1-0 off of a free kick we had given up.

And then we, you know, got a red card in that game and we were playing down.

So it was just us crawling and scraping and trying to make do with what we had.

And they scored on two goals of just, I mean, when you have an extra player on the field, it doesn't help our case.

But I think we fought, you know, really hard in that game, actually created more in the attack with a player down, which is crazy.

But no, I mean, overall,

happy with the energy and effort our team gave, but we gotta find some wins, we gotta find some goals.

You had talked last week about making changes to the lineup, how do you feel like that played out over the course of the weekend?

Yeah, we faced some injuries which made us have to kind of resort back to what we were doing, walked away with a few girls with some bumps, but overall we were able to kind of mix up some stuff, but what didn't do it to the best ability I wanted to.

just with having one practice on the week.

So this upcoming week, we'll have three solid practices to be able to kind of tinker with some stuff and then look to kind of making some changes as we go into conference.

Looking specifically at the Northwood game, this is a team that hasn't won a lot the last couple of years.

So learning how to win is a big part of it too, isn't it?

Yeah, it's a huge part, right?

It's not easy to win games, right?

You have to really battle.

You have to grind.

You have to put full things together.

So it's different, right?

It's hard to win sometimes.

And I challenged our girls.

I'm like, when is enough enough?

When's losing not fun anymore?

When's losing not what we want to do anymore?

And they all have the mentality that they're over it.

They're over losing.

They want to win, right?

So it's really trying to get them to just

kind of get over that hump.

I think we're real close.

We're climbing up that mountain.

It's just now getting over the peak of it and really solidifying some games and putting the ball in the back of the net.

And it's a process.

I have to keep remembering that.

And the girls have to keep remembering that.

They're angry.

They don't like losing, right?

But we also play a super hard non-conference to set us up for what we will see in the GLIAC.

So we're close.

We're getting there.

Again, we're not at our peak.

We're not even close to it yet.

We just got to keep putting, putting full games together and, and we'll get there.

The ball is going to go in the back of the net eventually.

Then coach Kuhar talks about how prepared they are for this weekend's matchups against Saginaw Valley State and Grand Valley State.

The two hardest hitters right off the top, right?

No, they'll be tough games, but again, I don't think it's anything our team isn't ready for or isn't prepared for.

We'll continue to prepare this week and be ready for it.

Saginaw, you know, is a solid team.

They don't have some of the players they have.

last year.

So that's, you know, something different.

We're going to see a little bit of a different team than they had in the past.

But I think, you know, very, very beatable.

I mean, any team in this conference is beatable if we put a full game together.

And then GV, I think, you know, they're Sinette number five in the nation.

But I think that's more motivation for our girls is like, you know, why not us?

So no, they're going to be two tough games against two very good opponents that are very well coached.

But again, it's, you know, why not us?

Why?

why can't we put it together and this be kind of our weekend to really kick start on that winning streak.

And that was Michigan Tech's soccer coach Melissa Cujar during her press conference this week at Michigan Tech.

Again, the soccer team is going to be playing this Friday against second of Valley State here at home at 6.

And they're staying at home for their game against Grand Valley State on Sunday at no.

These are bound to be exciting matchups as they kick off their Gleax season.

Welcome back to this week in Michigan Tech athletics here on mix 93 in the uber.

I am your host Sam Sears, Michigan Tech's soccer coach Cindy Pendrell had her press conference this week and she started off by reflecting on how the first two weeks of this season have gone so far.

Yeah, we're sitting in a good spot right now.

We have had a ton of battles.

And so, you know, I think there's a lot of beauty in learning early how to compete and how to battle against tough teams.

Depending on what ranking system you look at, every single team that we've played has been ranked above us.

So to be four and four at this point is right on target, I would say.

You know, certainly we had a couple of chances to pull out maybe one or two upsets here and there.

Of course we want that South Dakota Mines game back.

We had quite a few set point or match points there, but we're learning a lot as a team and we had to face a decent amount of adversity and a short period of time this past weekend as well.

So, you know, we're learning as we go and I would prefer to be battle tested already this early in the season than.

have to learn it

in Gliac Play.

Fillion pretty good.

Um, we had yesterday kind of a lighter practice.

We only went for an hour and did some film after that.

Um, so today we're going to start getting more into our regular practice schedule and all that stuff.

Um, yeah, this week we've got Davenport who is tall and they are good blocking team and, uh, do a lot on offense with their outsides, Abby Allen.

Um,

So yeah, that's going to be a challenge for us.

We had kind of a rough go of it last year at Davenport.

We had a major injury happen at that facility last year.

So we're looking for a little bit of redemption for that player specifically, but also for everybody.

We all wanted to, we all want to play well in this one.

So we're not going into it, you know, nervous or anything like that, more of like a, let's get some redemption from last year type mentality with that one.

And then Saginaw has added quite a few transfers.

They're very well coached.

Coach Lana took over a couple of years ago and I really respect

the way that she operates her team.

Um, so Saginaw is going to be a battle as well.

Um, you know, they have a very talented setter and just have weapons galore as well.

So, you know, I think the parody and the GLIAC should be there quite a bit this year.

Um, but yeah, it should be a quality weekend for us.

Welcome back to This Week in Michigan Tech Athletics.

Michigan Tech football saw success this week with a 48-27 victory over Midwestern State back on Saturday.

There are currently two to none in the standings.

During his press conference at Michigan Tech this week, Michigan Tech football coach Dan Matlak was asked about his win over Midwestern.

I was happy with everything, obviously.

That team was as dangerous as anybody were going to see in terms of what they have offensively and the weapons they had.

To be able to get the turnovers early, to get settled in was awesome.

The way the guys played and showed up ready to go was very happy with that part.

Again, talking after the game, if there was anything we're nitpicking on, I just thought there was a couple chances we left out there early offensively, obviously getting the turnover in the red zone and not getting anything out of it.

And obviously, we got to be able to capitalize in those situations.

But overall, I thought the guys played really well.

A couple of hiccups in the second half when there was a back and forth.

But other than that, I mean, win by 21 against a team that

that talented.

We'll take that every time.

How valuable is it to play a team like that that runs that hurry up offense so effectively?

I mean, it's going to get us ready for this week and we're going to see the same thing again this week.

They want to go fast as well.

So for our guys to handle it the way they did was great to see.

It felt like with the time of possession, obviously being in our favor by almost five minutes, being able to keep the defense off the field, to get them rested up to be able to battle that was good as well.

So overall from an entire team deal,

taking care of the football on our side for the most part.

Being able to extend drives and finish drives and then getting off the field like we did on defense was good to play off each other from that standpoint.

thought we handled it well last week.

We're going to have to reload and handle it well again this week.

We talked about it a little bit after the game on Saturday, but Chase coming up with two interceptions and Jameson had the other one.

How nice is it to see those guys stepping up right away this season and making plays and giving you an opportunity?

Yeah, I mean, those guys making those plays obviously great when it happened and going to need to continue to make those plays.

I think the most positive part about what we did with the turnovers on Saturday

is, you know, when we're getting the opportunities, we're not letting them go.

So, you know, you get a ball in your area and you can make a play on it and complete those catches.

It's a big deal for us.

Even the fumbles that got on the ground, one special teams and the very first play of the game to be able to get that covered up was obviously good.

So we've talked about it for a long time around here.

Being able to turn teams over, you know, it's hard enough to get off the field as it is, you know, and we've seen that in the first two weeks, even being in third and longs.

you know teams are able to convert so anytime we get an opportunity to get our hands on the football taking advantage of that is a big deal.

Dan Matlag then talked about defense and how to make them stronger.

We're playing a bunch of bodies in the back end, especially against a team that wants to go as fast as they are.

So it gets back to what we talked about last week, the communication of what the call is, understanding the situation of the game, regardless of what we're running coverage-wise of just not letting guys get behind us in those crucial times.

We got some guys that.

That cue we played last week is dangerous outside of the pocket.

He made a lot of plays with his feet, wanted to throw it downfield, so he was very patient when he did get outside of the pocket.

And in those situations, our DBs have to rely on what's going on in front of them and just make sure they're matching up who they're supposed to be covering rather than watching where the football's at.

So had some bad eyes at times and kind of fell off coverage.

But again, things that

that are correctable and we will get corrected here soon.

Football coach Dan Matlach then looks forward, talking about this weekend's opponent, Emporia State, and what they do well.

Same thing, offensively, that we saw last week.

I mean, it's a little bit different in terms of what they're doing scheme-wise, but they're going to spread us out, go 100 miles an hour.

And of course, that can give anybody fits when those kind of teams are in rhythm.

So we got to do a good job on first and second down to keep them out of that fast-paced stuff.

make sure that we're not giving up cheap ones.

If they're throwing the line of scrimmage routes or any of the quick game, we got to get it tackled so it's not going for chunk plays.

But they're talented.

The Q's good.

They got weapons on the outside that are capable of making guys miss in space.

So we're going to have to get hats to the football again and do a good job in our reduced box.

When they spread the field, less guys in the box, we've got to do a job with their run game as well.

So again, we'll have our hands full from that standpoint, just like we did last week.

Our guys have a plan for it, and we just got to execute it at that point.

So defensively, shut down a really good pit state team last week.

And we're great on third down, getting off the field.

So opposite of what I just talked about with our defense, we got to be good on first and second down to keep ourselves in third and in shorts to manageable so that our whole playbook is alive at that point.

Do not want to be in a situation where we're on a.

a ton of third and longs with this team because they're athletic up front and run a different scheme in terms of the box that we're going to see.

So we'll see some different pressures and guys are going to be in different spots.

So our communication up front is going to have to be good and get at the end of an idea pre-snap where we're going with the football so that we're not standing back there for three or four seconds either.

So it's going to be a challenge going to a place we've never been before playing a team we've never played before.

The trip is going to be different for our guys.

I said this at the beginning.

I think with the maturity we have coming back, once we get down there, it's just go play football at that point.

And regardless of who we're playing.

Where do you feel like the special teams are at at this point?

I mean, obviously, Avery kicks a school tying field goal and all of that.

But as a whole, where do

you feel like in Israel?

Yeah.

Good for the most part.

There's some things with our PAT field goal team that we got to get cleaned up.

And it's not just Avery.

It's an operational thing with the snap, the hold, and the protection part of it.

But I've said this before.

I think Avery is a weapon for us.

I love what he does, kicking the football.

Obviously showed that on Saturday with where he hit the one before half from.

But those chip shot field goals and whatnot.

We expect those to be 100% every single time.

So we've got to be better from that standpoint, especially in a situation where you get a turnover.

You've got to be able to come away with points there, whether it be a touchdown or a field goal.

So for everything else, our coverage units have been pretty good.

We let a kid get back to the middle of the field on one of the kickoffs last week.

So we've got to be better with our coverage lanes on those.

But we punted it well and protected it well.

right now we're covering it well so there's some stuff we got to clean up but overall pretty happy with that.

How's it going on the river Marty?

It's hard work

I'll be honest with you.

It is hard work.

So we got a little bit of work done this week, but we're still looking at that northern section from Rockbridge down to County Road D, State Highway 80 at Steamboat Rock.

That's open.

That's a nice, enjoyable paddle.

And this time of year, with colors starting to kind of give us that little bit of a hint that things are changing, it's really nice.

And the temperatures tend to be

very nice.

Water level is great in that section.

So just to be clear, the open section right now that's really enjoyable from Rock Bridge down to County Road D State Highway 80 at Steamboat Rock Landing.

So do not go further south than that.

Now I saw someone

I just happened to be coming back from a meeting and I was coming from Muscaday way and I drove over the highway 80 bridge coming into town and I saw a person one person in a kayak another person standing in the water pulling

two kayaks.

And that is about what that experience would be anywhere south of County Road D. It's work.

And we're working on it.

It's really, you know, we had some early storms there with wind, rained a lot, the banks were soft, then the wind, and there are three or four blockages, especially between Bowens Mill down to Millpond Park.

You do not want to go through there.

If you do, take a chainsaw with you and give us a little help.

Give us a little help there.

It's just not enjoyable.

It's not going to be fun.

So, but that northern section is and that's really enjoyable.

So, we just encourage people to use that section.

Should be some good kayaking, you know, on the pine coming up here for the fall.

Yeah, it actually that's and we're really focused on next week.

I have that crew fired up ready to go and we're going to do our best from bow and smell down to get some work done on that next week.

We we're getting past this weekend is just nuts with everything that's happening as everybody will hear here in a second.

So we really we're struggling.

with trying to get a crew together and get the time.

But next week, I can see where there should be a couple days.

We can get out there and maybe make some real hay, I guess, or lumber.

Yeah.

If you could be friends some beavers with good teeth.

You know, I've had a couple times where there were trees that were cut about halfway through by beavers.

Oh, yeah.

And apparently we have lazy beavers on the pine.

They never finish the jobs.

I'm kind of upset about that.

I have to get some people to come grind the stumps down

again.

Yeah, exactly.

What's going on this?

weekend.

So I'll tell you, there's there is no lack of something to do this weekend in the greater Richland area starting tonight.

I would say tonight if you really want to kick off and I'm all for kicking a weekend off a day early I am very much a fan of that discovered driftless tonight lone rock on highway 14 down a lone rock discovered driftless They have pie chart pizza there tonight starting at three o'clock Wandering brew will also be there and then lone goat rodeo takes the stage at five o'clock and I've heard him before really good Really good great music

Local vendors and really a cool driftless relaxed vibe to get your week started Weekend started Everybody I think knows by this point.

This is county fair weekend and there's a lot going on at the fair I know that Let's see so tonight there is

the midway kicks in Mr. Ed's magical midway kicks in they've already had some animal livestock judging and then tomorrow so tonight's free if you do go out to the fairgrounds there's no gate charge there tomorrow there is but then they also have the beef show swine show and then

Mr. Ed's Magical Midway opens at 5 o'clock on Friday.

But then in the grandstand at 6.30, Southwest Pullers on Friday night.

And then Saturday is always a big day.

at the Richland County Fair and my favorite the Demo Derby.

Seven o'clock in the grandstand but there's a whole bunch of other stuff going on.

The midway starts at noon.

There's a bunch of kids and agriculture activities in the morning as well as they got a life-sized balloon creation fellow there that does a nice job.

And I always encourage folks, businesses and individuals that you check out the meat animal sale.

That really goes a long ways in supporting the kids and their projects.

That's at five o'clock on Saturday.

And then don't forget Sunday, the Little Britches showmanship contest.

You never know what is going to happen or what's going to be said at the Little Britches showmanship contest.

And then the Midway kicks in again at noon on Saturday.

So, or Sunday wrap.

so so that's the county fair a lot going on there but then also this weekend up at Driftless Music Gardens the boogie down which is really a cool event a lot of great bands trampled by turtles will be there that's really not a regional band anymore they're a national a national artist that's really good I really encourage folks if you get a chance

they have day passes so you know you might hear hey it's awesome we go up we stay two nights it's a great time you don't have to do that locals you could sleep in your own bed just drive up they have day passes you could enjoy the shows and then be back in the comfort of your own home that night uh also friday night i don't want to forget central boarding house uh marge uh at the garden stage that's on seminary street they have moon house

performing at 6.30 Friday night.

Now Moon House performed at Driftless Music Gardens at the Boogie Down two years ago.

So it's a pretty big act really to be at the garden stage for free.

You can just go bring your own chair, bring your own beverage if you'd like, relax and watch that.

Also, I'd mention on Saturday, Call Park, the fish boil.

That's really become an event.

I said something to John Wanaki about it once.

I said, how's that going for you?

I think last year I asked him, how are things going?

He goes, that is an animal unto itself.

It's really become an event.

I know you don't want to wait until the end to get there because they may run out of fish.

It's been very popular.

Again, that's Saturday the 12th.

four o'clock to eight o'clock.

They also have live music.

No turning back is playing.

That sounds like a lot of my life.

There's no turning back.

And then also real quick shout out, Cross Currents Heritage Center still has some availability.

They have a workshop.

They're holding fall foraging workshop with Abby Layman who

is attached to Taliesin is coming to the Cross Currents Heritage Center on Saturday, September 12th to have their event.

And we'll have a workshop on foraging and especially in the fall, just different foods we find around us.

So those are kind of the highlights.

There's other things happening, Phil, but and it's it's busy.

This is a busy weekend and a lot of fun to be had and the weather looks fantastic.

Absolutely.

And if you're headed to the

east from here the branding iron has some good food

to branding the branding iron amps it up this week because this is a wood fired oven pizza Saturday they run that from four to eight o'clock

You know, they'll have different, we've talked a little bit about the different kinds of pizza you can get.

There's usually something for everybody.

If you're a more adventurous palate, there'll be something.

If you're like me and you're a traditionalist and I always argue, I eat pizza like God intended it.

We got red sauce and we got meat and cheese.

There you go.

And they'll have that too.

So, um, and, and then I should real quick give a highlight out.

They still have the big messy, it's the big.

Messy Marty.

Oh, Messy Marty.

Because it is a little messy.

The BLT that they offer this time of year, as Lisa said, those will hold out until the tomatoes are gone.

And they are really good.

Like I said, I've had one.

I wore one.

Don't go with white shirts.

You'll you'll wish you hadn't.

And just a little bit of a heads up on Sunday, September 27th.

Get this on your calendar.

They will have another original works open mic.

day.

And that's on Sunday, September 27th, starting at noon.

They they have a lunch special with a real Greco and sons, Italian sausage.

And then the music runs from one to four, the open mic at the branding iron, it isn't

You and I up there playing the comb, making noses, noises in our armpits.

These are folks that they can play.

They know what's going on.

They actually know the scale at least.

Yes.

No, they're very talented.

I've been up to several of the open mics at the branding iron and it is very enjoyable and just really cool to see all the talent that is in the area.

Actually, as a matter of fact, one might even say,

it's nice 69 degrees sunny winds from the east at around six miles per hour again we have no clouds in the sky to be seen from our perch here in champions pavilion the dignitaries making their way on in for the VIP experience here once again for man it's got to be going on 20 years or so now that we've been doing the VIP

pavilion area here and of course it's gotten upgrades as the years have gone along but if you have not experienced the VIP experience here at Curly Stadium we encourage you to contact the central ticket office and they can go ahead and get you all set with everything that you need to get access to the great food provided here by dining services along with the beverages that are for partaking and yes there are

alcoholic beverages for those who wish to enjoy that but water Coca-Cola products of course here for those of us who have responsibilities here for the next few hours.

We've got an exciting 60 minutes to lead up to kickoff here for today.

Let's get right to it.

Michigan Tech kicked off the season in week zero last week at Bemidji State University and those of you who of course got a chance to listen to it know that things were going in the Huskies favor for

a fair amount of time and then the fourth quarter came along and they started a tip closer towards the home team.

But Michigan Tech did get the scoring started as Elliot Larner who got the start and took every quarterback snap on Thursday night last week.

He scored an 11 yard run finishing off an eight play 75 yard drive with the opening drive of the game in 331 and the Huskies extra point made it seven to nothing.

However, but Magistrate did respond.

Lucas Peterson caught a 19 yard pass from Bert McCannitch.

Their extra point also good eight

plays 87 yards in three minutes and 38 seconds.

Huskies would respond once again in the first quarter.

Nick Nora with a couple of catches on the drive including a 26 yarder from Larner a six play drive 60 yards in 309.

The extra point though was no good.

That would actually become a factor later on in the game which we'll get to 13 to 7.

The Beavers would get the next scoring

drive and it was a six play 72 yard drive in three minutes and 47 seconds.

Connor Carver ran one in from one yard out there.

Extra point was good.

So the midget state would take the lead.

14 to 13 Huskies would answer Abram Larner gets a 36 yard pass from Nick Nora a seven play drive 65 yards and 307 that extra point was good It was 20 to 14 Huskies would tack on at the end of the first half Avery Kacharski would kick a 36 yard field goal five plays 29 yards in a minute 37 Huskies entered the break 23 to 14

Michigan Tech would get the only score of the third quarter.

Elliott Larner would get a second touchdown run of the day.

It was a long drive for the Huskies.

12 plays 56 yards, eight minutes and one second off the clock.

Coaching staff decided that with the defense being a bit tired, it was probably the best opportunity they would have to regain that point missed.

So they went for two.

They succeeded.

Abram Larner gets the catch and it was 31 to 14.

Then the comeback would start.

Kyle Nadler kicks a 29 yard field goal in a 13 play 64 yard drive in six minutes and 39 seconds 11 38 to go fourth quarter It's 31 17 Huskies would have a fumble at the mesh point of a read option gives Bemidji State a short field They would convert Connor Carver one yard out five plays 34 yards in 227 and just like that.

It is 31 23 extra point pending Which was no good

And that is key for Bemidji State because they would get the next score of the game.

Lucas Peterson, third try was the charm, Bert McCannitch, and the Beavers run the same play a third time.

Lucas Peterson catches from 26 yards, 11 plays, 75 yards and 506.

It's 31-29 with 41 seconds to go.

That meant Bemidji State needed to go for two.

Huskies were able to knock it away.

Jamison Stamps gets his hand on one across the middle, knocks it down, and the Huskies escape with the victory.

Larner, again, who took every snap for the Huskies, was 14 of 22 passing 153 yards and a touchdown.

Also ran 14 times for 64 yards and two scores.

Jake Roof, 17 carries, 78 yards and he added a couple of catches as well for 10 yards.

Nick Nora was just under 100 yards receiving and the Huskies get the victory.

For Midwestern State, they opened a non-conference game at home Memorial Stadium, the host.

and it was Missouri Southern State, who was their opponent.

And Missouri Southern gets on the board first.

Asher Huffman, 43 yard field goal.

Then later on in the first quarter, Isaiah Green, a long pass from Tillman Martin.

But here's where the things changed.

On that extra point attempt, it was actually blocked.

And Ethan Dishman from Midwestern State returns it 88 yards for two.

and then things went Midwestern State's way after that.

Caden Brown runs one in after a six play drive.

Scoring is knotted at nine.

Caden Brown finds Tyler Brown for 62 yards, a single play there, and it's 16 to nine.

Jaden Coulter runs one in from one yard on a 13 play 81 yard drive.

It's 23 to nine.

Dalton Bailey, a 16 yard reception from Caden Brown.

It's 30 to nine as we are in the third quarter.

Fourth quarter, Missouri Southern gets Isaiah Green with another touchdown catch from Tillman Martin.

It's 30 to 16.

The comeback attempt continues.

Messiah Smith, a two yard run.

with seven eleven to go it was a one-score game thirty to twenty three but the mustangs were able to hold on and finish with that same score head coach of the miss uh... midwestern state mustangs rich renner talk this week on the stang gang podcast about his team's ability to overcome some of those early jitters

There was still, you know what I mean, just that first game jitters and first game nervousness and what have you.

I just think that once we settled down as an offense, you know, having a new quarterback with Caden Brown.

behind the helm and as well as defensively with the new playcaller behind there.

I think that once we settled down a little bit and got that spark on that block, it really kind of just woke us up a little bit and we started to take off and it was nice to see.

I don't think there was a panic on the sideline.

I didn't feel the panic.

I didn't feel like that, you know, here we go or whatever, you know, I didn't feel that.

I felt like we all knew that

even being down 10 to nothing that we were still going to be able to come back and and make this a game and how quickly we did from the two points that we got from the block.

So now it's nine to two.

Then we obviously get the ball and and go down and score.

And now it's nine to nine.

You know what I mean?

And now it's a new ball game and it's like you're resetting zero to zero again.

And and then, you know, obviously we just kept, you know, finally getting our niche and getting our groove.

And I think that's what we needed.

We just needed, you know, some positivity, some some excitement, some

you know playmaking ability and guys making plays and that's that's the name of the game and so once that happened it just kind of sparked the whole team and in all phases

There was head coach rich renner on the stand gang podcast.

We'll hear more from him about the Huskies Coming up later on in our pregame show, but I gotta love the southern drawl to it's how you know You're playing somebody that you haven't played in a long time somebody from a different conference you get rich renner in that Texas Accent he's got going on there.

Love that But his quarterback Caden Brown was fantastic 32 of 38 390 yards and two touchdowns.

He also added 14 yards and a touchdown

on the ground.

Tyler Brown finished with a team high and game high 85 yards receiving, but it was Dominic Cox who had 10 receptions to lead the team in that category.

They spread it out to 10 different receivers.

So let's look back at what happened last week between both the Huskies and Beavers and Missouri Southern and Midwestern state.

Well, a couple of games have already gotten underway in the GLIAC here this week.

That includes Grand Valley State, who gave up the first score of the game on a fumble.

Phineas Allen of West Texas A&M takes 120 yards to give A&M a 7-0 lead at Lubbers Stadium.

But then the Lakers went ahead and scored the next 56 points of the game leading into the fourth quarter.

made the final score 56 to 14 in the game.

Andrew Schuster didn't need to do a lot for the Lakers.

10 of 15, 283 yards, five touchdowns.

And it was Kellen Russell-Dixon who ran for 144 and two scores.

But then just the synergy of this win, six turnovers, four interceptions, four interceptions, all led to touchdowns.

Speaking of a big win, Wayne State was just looking for any win at this point.

They have a brand new head coach.

has taken over for Tyrone Wheatley after a few years of underperformance by the Warriors and unfortunately...

for Wayne State.

Things did not go much better at Tom Adams Field for their season opener.

Northwood scores a minute and 45 seconds or 35 seconds rather into the game and the foot never came off the gas pedal.

They scored 14 in the first, 28 in the second, 10 more in the third on their way to a 52 to nothing victory over Wayne State.

Wayne State on the day had 12 first downs could only run for 17 yards total while giving up.

291 on the ground.

The passing attack unfortunately not that effective either.

19 of 36 were 170 yards and they were out-possessed by 34-18 margin to 25-42.

I guess short in terms of the answers from Wayne State in comparison to Grand Valley State and certainly when things don't go your way like they did for the Warriors on Thursday night, not necessarily a lot you can say when that's the result, but they'll go back to work.

Certainly a lot of work to do with Wayne State as again, they've struggled the last handful of years and we're picked last in the preseason poll in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season.

Some work to do for Terrence Isaac Sr., but the Warriors do believe that he is the right man for the job who's going to get them where they need to be in the future.

So, Warriors suffer a pretty good size loss on Thursday.

Last night, number one, Ferris State got their home opener at Top Taggart Field, and they took on NE 10 Faux Bentley, and it was Ferris State.

with their 32nd straight win, 38-3, never really in doubt at Top Tiger Field for the top ranked Ferris State Bulldogs.

So those are some of the games that have already happened in GLIAC play here this week.

We are about 40 minutes away from kickoff between the Michigan Tech Huskies and the Midwestern State Mustangs, a rematch of the 2022 game that took place down in Wichita Falls, Texas.

We'll touch on that game a little bit more coming up in just a little bit on our coverage.

First, more on the Michigan Tech.

athletic department plenty going on here as we are now officially into the month of September and Michigan Tech volleyball seems to have a habit of playing five game sets.

There's more of them.

on the schedule after last Thursday's game that was leading into our Husky football broadcast went five sets against Minnesota Duluth.

They continued more the same at the Mountain Lion Classic in Colorado Springs, Colorado this week.

On Thursday they took on the host University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

It was a 3-2 win for the host squad.

Huskies lose the first set 27-25.

dropped the second one 25-13 before rallying 25-23, 25-21 before finally succumbing 15-10.

Huskies would go five sets in their first matchup on Friday against St.

Edwards, winning 25-15, then losing the next two 25-18 and 25-16 before a marathon fourth set goes the Huskies way 29-27, forces the fifth and deciding set where Michigan Tech wins 15-8.

And then it was the hard rockers of South Dakota Mines in the second game yesterday.

Mines takes a 25-22 first set lead.

Huskies take the next two, 25-19, 25-21 before Mines ties things up at 25-20.

And then when the fifth and final set, 17-15 to take it over the Huskies, three sets to two.

Huskies will play against Midwestern State today at 1.30.

And then we'll have Davenport to open GLIAC play.

on Friday, the current record, at three and four for the Michigan Tech Huskies.

Michigan Tech soccer started their season on the home turf last weekend, losing to Minnesota to Luth 2-0 and St.

Cloud 3-0.

Then went on the road at Northwood and did score their first goal of the season, but did fall to Northwood 3-1.

They'll take on Cedarville at 2.30 here today.

Melissa Kuhar had this to say about her team's performance and leading into this weekend's matches.

The weekend was tough in terms of just I felt like we didn't play 100 percent.

our style of soccer in our game.

I think the first half on Friday didn't play well, watching that film right now.

So it's tough to look at it because it's just not who we are in our style.

But then put some good time in that second half and then again on Sunday.

We just got to find that final thing to work in the final third to make goals happen.

But they're coming.

It's, again, we're not at our peak.

We're nowhere close.

So we'll get there.

We're going to move some people just a little bit around, try some different things.

We're still in that process of trying to try things out and figure out what works, who works well together.

That's a big one.

Who maybe can help us create more in the attacking side of the ball.

It's just kind of moving people up the field.

You can go take a defender and move them into the midfield, and it might really drastically change how we play or how we look.

It's nothing crazy.

You're not going to see a field player

goal, I promise you that.

But we're going to try some different things.

And again, we gave up five goals.

We didn't win a game.

We didn't score a goal.

Something's got to change.

And now is the time to kind of tinker with it before we head into a very hard opening conference weekend with Sagna on GV.

And then Cedarville, I mean, they, you know, they went and they lost to GV, you know, three to one, but GV is GV.

But Cedarville is a national tournament team, you know, throughout the last couple years and brought back a lot of their production in terms of the goal scored and stuff.

So going to be a tough team and at home for them, right?

And it's kind of a toss-up, right?

Like, we got to just go out there and try to compete and do what we can.

And I think we can come out of the weekend with two wins.

Well unfortunately for Coach Cujar again they did drop Thursday night's game but a chance to go one and one against Cedarville this afternoon and again 2-30 to start time for that.

Then they'll be back at home taking on those two tough opponents she referred to.

Saginaw Valley on Friday.

Grand Valley on Sunday.

That'll be opening up GLIAC play here at Curly Stadium.

Athletics director Dr. Suzanne Sanregret joining us here at the Champions Pavilion.

I guess no offense, of course, to soccer, but the first big home event here for Michigan Tech Athletics here this season.

Volleyball did get things kind of touched off a little bit earlier, but just kind of great to get everything back and rolling again.

I think we kind of eased into it with the two smaller crowd sports getting off first, but really excited for today.

Hopefully a great crowd.

Beautiful weather, perfect football day.

excited to see the Huskies play at home.

Yeah, it's going to be a great atmosphere here.

I see that the stands already starting to fill out.

Make sure you bring your sunscreen because yeah, very few clouds out there.

Temperatures supposed to get up into the upper 70s, but you're right.

It's a perfect day for football and you know those things don't always happen and we do have a couple of November kickoffs here at Curly Stadium.

So enjoy it while you can.

That's for sure.

Just really excited to get football going here at the community and our student turnout should be pretty good.

Lots of events happening this football season surrounding the KD reunion and all football class reunion.

We also have Hall of Fame this fall.

So a lot of special events happening at football and hockey games throughout football.

Yeah, the Hall of Fame inductees were just announced earlier this week.

That's going to take place mid-October for those inductions.

Yeah, mid-October.

I think October 6th.

17 that weekend, so should be some great events.

to celebrate their legacies of those Hall of Fame inductees.

Absolutely.

There are 10 of them that are going to get their names enshrined at Michigan Tech for their athletic achievements and their contributions to the athletic department because it's not always what you did on the field or on the playing surface.

But some of the things that you've done in the backgrounds, Darcy Way, of course, is the prime example of that.

People might look at his career numbers as a hockey player and be like, why is he in the Hall of Fame?

But I mean, he's done so much for this program in the 30 plus years since graduation.

Oh, absolutely.

We have a lot of alumni and folks that have gone above and beyond their duties.

And, you know, Darcy's been an incredible ambassador for all of our athletic programs throughout his time and tenure and a great way to honor him.

You know, I think we also revamped kind of how our selection goes, where we're really trying to have three of our 10B pioneers or those that have come before.

Maybe we had all the video and stat packages and things to track success.

So we're really trying to evaluate that we didn't miss anyone from the pre-1980 era, where we just didn't have the data like we do post-1980.

And I think that change in how we select has really helped a lot in our committee and the work that they're doing to make sure we look back in history to see who we've missed.

You think about offensive linemen back in the 50, 60, 70s, there weren't stats to track how good they were.

So really trying to dig in and figure out the history of some of those individuals and make sure that we honor them.

There's also in hockey, for example, with Wayne Weller, national championship teams.

And when you have a national championship team, you have a lot of contributors.

And maybe stats aren't quite there, but Wayne was an incredible.

contributor to those national championship teams so to bring him back and then.

You know, more recently, Lucida Nasik, I mean, one of the most outstanding players in women's basketball history in terms of the most success that program has ever seen, and she was an integral part of it.

So really excited to have so many people back.

Sarah Nash, Mike Coran, there's just so many that we get to celebrate.

Deidre Irwin, Olympian, Olympian, two-time Olympian, and really excited.

Great histories, great representation of our student athletes and what they've done.

not just student athletes but you know supporters of our program.

Absolutely one of those big supporters of Michigan Tech athletics and pardon me if I'm wrong I think was a Hall of Famer as well.

We lost earlier this year in Bill Steele.

He was a great contributor both to hockey programs and athletic programs as a whole.

Yeah correct and and Jerry McGinnis as well so yeah Hall of Fame is really one of my most favorite times probably my favorite event just because it's

It's very emotional.

It's all encompassing of everything Michigan Tech means, not only when those inductees were students, athletes, and coaches, et cetera, but what they have done with their degree and what athletics has done for them beyond their graduation from Michigan Tech.

So it's pretty special time.

Yeah, and so many of them have really looked back so fondly at this time that they do donate back.

They contribute time and money and...

all kinds of resources for these student athletes and the students across the university.

It's a great way for them to stay involved with it and because the landscape is ever-changing in college athletics, if somebody wants to get in and contribute to athletics in any capacity, how do they go about doing so?

Welcome to the press box here at Curly Stadium at Michigan Tech Huskies and Midwestern State Mustangs getting ready for the 2026 edition of the home and home series.

And my name is Josh, he'll tell you this is the Kirkish furniture countdown to kick off.

But it was 21-21.

Huskies had the football.

They had good field position.

And then the unfortunate happened.

And it really wasn't much else I could say.

The actual point was good with 12 seconds to go.

The Huskies had the game tied.

We're in position to potentially get a go ahead score in the final minute of the game.

And then pressure just...

coming right through the middle as you would expect it would on a screen pass.

You know your offensive line kind of lets those guys go to set up blocks downfield for the screen pass and Will had to try to throw one off to the right side towards Will Morano and it was just perfectly read by Malik Owens.

There was nobody who was going to catch him and the Huskies unfortunately lose that game in front of a raucous crowd at Memorial Stadium 28.

to 21, Midwestern State scores 21 in the fourth quarter to win that game.

So the Huskies have some revenge to unleash here today, and they will try to do so in about 20 minutes as Midwestern State has traveled all the way from North Texas to the upper reaches of Upper Michigan.
