As an economist and a lawyer, with experience spanning Wall Street to Main Street, from Capitol Hill to foreign countries, working alongside entrepreneurs, small business owners, and the largest corporations and financial institutions in the world, and most recently as a public service attorney, what I see clearly is that we have much more in common than we are often led to believe. We share values, goals, and worries. We want elected officials that understand this and get things done to make life better for our families. Sadly, some in politics increasingly create division, fear, and moral judgment, isolating us into camps, urging us to see the world as us vs. them. My experience has shown me that these are intentional and dangerous illusions. Before joining Civic Media, I was the chief legal officer for Milwaukee County for over seven years. As a native and proud Milwaukeean, it was the hardest, best job I’ve ever had. My time included battles over the balance of powers, COVID-19, the murder of George Floyd and resulting protests, the 2020 election and recount, legislative redistricting, lawsuits against opioid manufacturers and distributors, PFAS manufacturers, and insulin manufacturers and PBMs, resulting in $100s of millions in settlements, the largest overhaul in state law regarding local government funding, and massive pension reforms. So, why did I leave? Because every single vote in Wisconsin matters, especially now, in this election cycle, the most important in modern history. So, when Civic’s CEO, Sage Weil, offered me the opportunity to share some of my life and viewpoints with the amazing people of Wisconsin, on a radio network that strives to rediscover what connects us, my choice was clear. Every day on the air, I aim to work with our listeners to help us each rediscover our shared values and by doing so, hold candidates and elected officials accountable. We all deserve a fair shot. Because in the end, it’s always better when we stand together. Let’s do this, Wisconsin!
