Phil Nee
When I was just a ‘wee Nee’, I discovered the Beatles. A CBS late movie showing of the movie ‘Help’ motivated me to learn more about the group. The Marx Brothers movies were a favorite of mine and when I saw the Fab Four on the small screen, they reminded me of a slap stick comedy troupe. One of my early vinyl record purchases was the ‘Help’ soundtrack. Later I set out to buy the Beatles Greatest Hits red album 1962-66 and the blue album 1967-70. My first copies were on cassette tape. I memorized the words to every song. Today Beatle music is still near and dear, however, I am more of a fan of the songs that are not so overplayed. The ’62 thru ’66 era is my favorite time for the lads from Liverpool. Although I am not old enough to remember that first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, I do remember the videos of the group being played on that program and others in the late ’60’s. My mother would always say to my dad, “Jim, look at their hair”! Some of my favorites include Things We Said Today, Please Please Me, A Hard Day’s Night, Ticket to Ride, You Won’t See Me, I’ve Just Seen a Face, Babys in Black, The Night Before, Rain, Tell Me Why, I’m Down, and Eight Days a Week.
On this week’s Those Were the Days radio show, I will be spinning a few Beatles moments. Feel free to request a song from their repertoire or ask for anything from the fifties through the early nineties Top Forty format. Thanks to our long-distance requestors from Rockford, Michigan, and Texas during last weekend’s program. We will be rocking the hills and valleys again with classic rock and roll between six and midnight Saturday night on WRCO FM 100.9, WRCO.com, and the Civic Media app.
