Uncle Rico (from the movie Napoleon Dynamite) and yours truly both tried our best to get our high school teams to state back in 1982. Unfortunately, the coach did not put us in the game and the teams fell short. With tight shorts, long tube sox, and purple Pro Ked shoes, I gave it my all. I met my goal of scoring at least one point in every game that year (not counting the number of pointing the fans did at me). Had I been focused only on basketball; I might have helped the team more. There were other distractions such as trying to get a date, dancing at the record hop Friday night after the game, and how I was going to scrape enough money to buy the latest smash hit on the radio. Songs that were playing between my ears from January of 1982 include Centerfold-J.Geils Band, Harden My Heart-Quarterflash, Waiting on a Friend-Rolling Stones, Young Turks-Rod Stewart, Under Pressure-Queen/David Bowie, Abacab-Genesis, and Working for the Weekend-Loverboy. It was a fantastic soundtrack to a transitional year for this boy from Aubry Corners. The last semester of high school was underway, and radio school would happen in the fall. What a great time to be young and foolish. Saturday night I will be old and foolish when we revisit January of 1982. Please join us for the fun on WRCO FM 100.9, WRCO.com, and on the Civic Media between six and midnight. You could win a fun prize during our trivia games. Warm up Saturday night with Those Were the Days.
