Summer of ’72

Life on the farm while growing up was wonderful. It was hard work but there was a lot of play and pranks. My goal was always to pull a trick on my sister Sue. I was not the smartest Nee that was ever born and most every trick backfired on me. Imagine the Coyote (Wile E. Coyote-Super Genius) and the Roadrunner. Everything the poor coyote did always made him look like a fool. In the summer of 1972, I had all kinds of activities that were sure to get my sister good. Once I found a dead snake that did not make it while dad was mowing hay. I hung it on the handlebars of Sue’s bicycle. When she saw it, I laughed hysterically until she picked up a rake, removed the snake, and flipped the deceased serpent at me. Somehow it wrapped twice around my neck like Indiana Jones whip. I than screamed and ran around the yard trying to free myself of the horror while Sue laughed and rode away on her bike. Another occasion saw her darling little brother finding a rotten egg in the haymow. My devious plan was to hide around the corner of the old screen porch and when she walked outside, I would hit her with the stinky egg. For some reason I thought it was a good idea to conceal the smelly bomb in my front pocket. As I ran and giggled, the tread on my Pro Keds sneakers failed me and I slipped and landed on the rotten egg. My Saturday night bath was moved up a few days that week! During the Summer of ’72 there were many songs that were playing as my sister, cousins, and me had what we called ‘Shindigs’ on the porch. We would play the radio or records and sing and dance. Some of my favorites in the month of June were Nice to Be With You-Gallery, Sylvia’s Mother-Dr Hook, Tumbling Dice-Rolling Stones, Too Late to Turn Back Now-Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose, Layla-Derek & the Dominoes, How Do You Do-Mouth and MacNeal, Take It Easy-Eagles, Schools Out-Alice Cooper, Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)-Looking Glass, and Hold Your Head Up-Argent.

I will be spinning favorites from 1972 this Saturday night between six and midnight during WRCOs’ Those Were the Days. Listen for our famous cowbell that signals trivia games. Call or text a song request from the fifties through the early nineties. Tune in 100.9 FM, listen on our website WRCO.com or through the Civic Media app. I hope to connect with you, and I promise that I won’t put a snake on your bike.
