On this Saturday nights Those Were the Days radio show, I will take it back to the late spring of 1987. It will be a fun look back at pop culture of the late 1980’s. In the year of 1987, I was in the waning days of my bachelor ways. I asked the lovely June to be my bride and to my surprise she said yes. The other young women of Southwest Wisconsin were breathing a sigh of relief because I wasn’t going to ask them. My shift at the radio station had shifted from the nighttime to the morning early afternoon. We were in the last days of getting new music on vinyl 45 records. A few cd singles had been shipped to the station from record companies. New music included songs from U2, Huey Lewis, Jody Watley, Fleetwood Mac, Poison, Stevie Winwood and the Starship. It was a great time to be in radio with new technology pushing out reel to reel tape machines, and cart machines that played all of the commercials. It was hard to imagine at the time that someday all of the music and programs would be stored on a computer hard drive.
When you join me for Those Were the Days on Saturday night, I will be spinning all of the tunes from the fifties through the early nineties. You may be a trivia star if you answer one of our tough questions correctly. Listen to us on WRCO FM 100.9, WRCO.com and the Civic Media app. Last week was a blast as we heard from all over the Midwest and beyond. The U.S. states of Florida and Utah were represented by listeners. I hope you will give me a ring this Saturday night between six and midnight.
