During my stellar elementary years, the discipline instituted by the teaching staff was to issue sentences for disruptive behavior. Normally they were assigned 100 at a time. Sometimes when I kept talking, they would go up to 500 or even 1,000. During 1975, I could count on one hand the number of times I was able to go out for recess. That time was reserved for me to work on my sentences. Some of my greatest hits that school year were, I will not talk out of turn, I will raise my hand when I want to speak, I will not sing songs during class time, I will not draw pictures during class math time, I will not write comments on the lunch menu, and many more. It’s been told to me that I now get paid for what use to get me in trouble. During that time, I hired a young lady classmate to write sentences for me. She earned 25 cents for every 100. This scheme would have worked, except her penmanship was too neat and my new start up business was quickly shut down. Many years later, this lady was working at the hospital and sent a paper to my hospital room that contained 100 sentences about getting better. That was awesome!

The radio was always my friend and in early 1975, there were some great tunes that soothed my soul and my cramped over used writing hand. Favorites included, Some Kind of Wonderful-Grand Funk, Black Water-Doobie Brothers, Fire-Ohio Players, Lady-Styx, Lady Marmalade-LaBelle, Roll on Down the Highway-BTO, Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You-Sugarloaf, No No Song-Ringo Starr, and Junior’s Farm-Wings. During my Those Were the Days radio show Saturday night on WRCO, I will play the Top 25 from this week in 1975. There will be some extras and album cuts from that era. It will be a fun dose of music from smack dab in the middle of the ’70’s. You will also hear a few direct from vinyl classics and other surprises from the first fifty years of rock and roll.

I will not be taking requests this Saturday night. After a day of wrestling coverage for WRCO, my appearance is required at a wild birthday party for my beautiful blonde-haired blue-eyed granddaughter as she will be turning 5 years old. Hold on to your requests until next weekend or you will have to write, I will listen to Those Were the Days Saturday nights and request songs-100 times before you can go out for recess. If you don’t, we will put a check mark in the behavior column on your report card. You might even get an S minus.
