I was the kid keeping score of baseball games while listening to the radio. On New Years Eve I was the nerd listening to the yearend countdown and journaling the songs as the d.j. played them all the way to number one. At the end of the year in 1974, I had my new Panasonic AM radio tuned to Chicago radio station WLS as they recapped the year in music. If I would have worked that hard and been that dedicated to my classroom studies, today I could have been writing for the New England Journal of Medicine instead of a WRCO blog. The year of nineteen hundred and seventy-four had many magical musical memories. Some of my favorites from the year ender include, Band on the Run-Wings, The Locomotion-Grand Funk, Rock On-David Essex, Sundown-Gordon Lightfoot, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet and Takin Care of Business-BTO, The Joker-Steve Miller Band, When Will I See You Again-Three Degrees, Star Baby-Guess Who, Rock Your Baby-George McCrae, Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress)-Helen Reddy, Waterloo-ABBA, Rikki Don’t Lose That Number-Steely Dan, For the Love of Money-O’Jays, The Show Must Go On-Three Dog Night and Everlasting Love-Carl Carlton.
On Saturday night I will be recapping the year of 1974, and I will try to prove that my late-night studying of the radio all those years ago has sort of paid off. Join me for Those Were the Days and we will have some fun. Feel free to request a song from the nearly 40 years of music in our library. You may win a prize while playing along with our trivia games. Between six and midnight Saturday night, it’s Those Were the Days on WRCO FM 100.9 and WRCO.com. This will be our last show in 2024. We have big plans for the New Year. Please be aware that our show could be bumped if the NFL moves the Green and Gold to a Saturday game in early January. We will keep you posted and stay tuned to this blog spot for more. This has been a wonderful year full of Saturday nights. With the show online and with the Civic Media app., we have been able to find even more friends. Make sure you join us on New Years Eve for Triviathon 2024. You can sign up by calling WRCO at 608 647-2111.
