WAUTOMA, Wis (WAUH)- An Oshkosh Police officer is on administrative leave after shooting and killing a man who drew a handgun on him in the parking lot of the Fleet Farm store at 177 North Washburn Street Sunday morning.

According to a press release from the state’s Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation the officer responded to reports of a theft of a firearm. The officer encountered the suspect in the parking lot.

The man did not comply with the officer’s commands and while walking towards the officer retrieved a firearm from his waistline. The officer discharged their weapon. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Life-saving measures were rendered on the wounded man and he was taken to a local hospital where he died. No one else was injured.

The officer was wearing a body-worn camera during the incident. The DCI is leading the investigation. Once their investigation is complete they will turn over their reports to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office.
