Republican businessman and attorney Paul Wassgren of Ashland announced Tuesday that he is suspending his campaign for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District.
In a statement, Wassgren said he is dropping out of the race “to assist Republican efforts throughout Wisconsin” and expand his “involvement with the Catholic Church.” He said his campaign “has never been about a position or a paycheck.”
He added that while he believes he has the resources and message to win, “a bloody and highly expensive primary will only benefit the Democrats.”
Wassgren, who largely self-funded his campaign, also cited the April election results in calling on “all Republicans, including candidates, to prioritize the interests of the Republican Party and the State of Wisconsin.”
He currently serves as chair of the Republican Party of Ashland County and says he will support Congressman Tom Tiffany’s campaign for governor, speaking to groups across Wisconsin in support of Tiffany’s bid.
His departure leaves four Republicans still seeking the nomination in the 7th District.
Among them is Michael Alfonso, who has been endorsed by President Donald Trump and is the son-in-law of U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Jessi Ebben, Kevin Hermening, and Niina Baum are also in the race.
Democrats in the 7th District race include former state Rep. Fred Clark, Ginger Murray and Chris Armstrong.
