State Representative Christian Phelps officially launched his reelection campaign for the 93rd Assembly District this week.

Phelps reflected on his first term in the State Assembly during his comments to supporters at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire on Thursday, expressing frustration with trying to introduce legislation to fix significant issues while in the minority party. He also expressed optimism that new district maps and a new political climate could alleviate those frustrations with a successful November election.

“In Madison, because we do not hold the majority in the Legislature, I have faced a brick wall when we try to fix those problems,” he said. “So not only have none of my proposals that some folks here already outlined gotten a vote in the assembly, but none of them have even been scheduled for pubic debate in committees. And that is the reality of being in the minority and it’s why it’s so crucial that we hold onto this seat and flip at least five more in the Assembly.”

Phelps said addressing public school funding issues will continue to be his top priority, highlighting the impacts of the financial challenges facing schools across Wisconsin. School districts have repeatedly turned to property taxpayers for additional funding through referendum proposals. Districts that fail to pass those referendums often face layoffs, program cuts, or even closures and consolidations.

“Schools are closing,” Phelps said. “And here in Eau Claire, we have teachers wondering if they will have a job next year. We have programs that kids and families are relying on disappearing all over the Chippewa Valley and all over the state. And that is, to be clear, the result of decisions made in the State Legislature.”

As of Thursday, no Republican or Democratic challengers have announced their candidacy for the 93rd Assembly District.
