Mayo Clinic Health System officials shared plans for a major construction project at their downtown Eau Claire facility this week.

According to an announcement on Thursday, the healthcare organization will break ground on a new surgical and procedural building at its Eau Claire campus next Spring.

Officials say the new six-story, 130,000-square-foot building will be constructed on the current site of the Amalia Building next to the childcare center. They plan to relocate the childcare facility to the north end of the campus and decommission the Amalia building later this year. Following its decommissioning, the Amalia building will also be demolished by the Spring of 2027 before construction on the new building can begin.

Mayo Clinic Health System officials currently estimate the new facility will open in the Fall of 2029. They say the project will provide their staff with the latest advancements in care and improve the healthcare experience for their patients throughout the Chippewa Valley.

The organization is also currently working on an expansion project at the Menard Center for Emergency Care. Earlier this year, the Menard family donated $14 million to support the expansion project and Mayo Clinic Health System officials broke ground on construction in March.

Since the closure of the HSHS hospitals over two years ago, the remaining emergency healthcare facilities in the region have been overwhelmed. Their hope is the added space will mitigate some of the additional stress placed on the emergency department from those closures. The expanded emergency department facility is currently scheduled to be completed in early 2027.
