Moroun gave $1M to PAC supporting Trump prior to president’s tirade over Gordie Howe Bridge

Newly released campaign finance data shows that a political action committee, MAGA Inc., which directly supported President Donald Trump’s previous campaign efforts and continues to serve his “Make America Great Again” movement, was given $1 million by the owners of the Ambassador Bridge just a month before the president took aim at its main competitor.

Matthew Moroun, a trucking magnate and the owner of the privately-operated Ambassador Bridge, was listed as giving a large sum to MAGA Inc. on Jan. 16, 2026, according to a Federal Election Commission filing. Moroun’s mailing address on an itemized receipt matches the one he used on other political donation filings in the past, and lists his Central Transport trucking company as his source of employment.

The filing connects the dots to recent reporting that Moroun lobbied the Trump administration in the days leading up to Trump publicly announcing that his belief that the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which had been slated to open this year, be delayed to that the U.S. and Canada could renegotiate the deal that brought the bridge into existence — namely, the agreement that gives Canada the tolls collected on the bridge to pay that nation back for the nearly $5 billion it used to finance construction.

Trump wanted to scuttle that agreement for no apparent reason other than his ongoing trade dispute with the U.S. neighbor to the north, but it was later discovered that Moroun had been actively jockeying the president in order to allegedly stall the opening of the Ambassador Bridge’s new competitor.

Moroun had reportedly visited the White House in the days leading up to Trump’s social media missive blasting the Gordie Howe Bridge on Feb. 9, and met with U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick just hours before the president’s social media post.

The Moroun family fought for more than a decade against the creation and the opening of a new bridge crossing, and is a major supporter of Republican candidates, including Trump’s various campaigns for president.

The new filing from MAGA Inc. further solidifies the footprints from Moroun to the White House in the dust up over the bridge.
