
Tuesday HS sports round up: West and EMU hockey victorious, East and Newman boys and DCE girls basketball also win
Holiday high school sports action continued on Tuesday with lots of action on the ice and courts. In a game heard on 98.9 WXCO, the Wausau West hockey team got a hat trick from Cooper DePuydt and rolled past Chippewa Falls 8-3 in Day 2 of the Notre Dame Academy Holiday Showcase in Ashwaubenon. Xander DeByle, Joe Graveen, Chase Crass, Owen Pergolski & Hendrix Damrow also scored goals as the Warriors improved to 11-1 exactly halfway through the regular season. West will finish the NDA Holiday Showcase on Wednesday night vs. Verona. It took two overtimes but the East-Merrill United hockey team beat Waupaca 5-4. Jackson Pierce scored 30 seconds into the second OT to lift the Bluejacks. The goal completed a hat trick for Pierce, who leads the team with 14 goals on the season. Brody Klebenow and Erik Grunenwald also had goals while Tony Stricklin stopped 46 shots in goal for EMU. D.C. Everest moves to 6-5 on the season after beating Amery 2-1 at Greenheck-Turner Ice Arena.
In boys’ basketball, Quincy Pfender scored 25 points to lead Newman Catholic to a 57-54 win over Eleva-Strum on Tuesday. Lucas Pfiffner added 19 points for the Cardinals (3-6 overall). Newman travels to unbeaten Tigerton on Saturday night, 6:45 pm airtime on 98.9 WXCO.
Wausau East held off Medford 74-72 at the East gym on Tuesday. Xander Klein scored 26 points while Robbie Anguilli had 24 for the Lumberjacks, who improved to 2-6 on the season.
In girls’ basketball it was D.C. Everest rolling past Chippewa Falls 56-27 while Wausau West fell to Oshkosh West 58-28 at the Marshfield Invite. The Warriors return to action on Friday vs. Marathon. 7 pm airtime on 98.9 WXCO.
Marathon continued their strong start to the season with a 59-49 win over Sheboygan Falls in Oshkosh. Marathon improved to 6-2 overall heading into the game at West on Friday.
Newman Catholic improves to 4-6 after beating Colby 46-26 at the Newman gym.
