WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) The FDA is recalling 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese made by the Great Lakes Cheese Company in Ohio due to the possibility of metal fragments in the packages.

More than 45 brands of bagged shredded cheese have been identified as recalled, according to a recent Enforcement Report on the Food and Drug Administration’s website.

All of the products contain low-moisture part-skim mozzarella or a blend of mozzarella and other cheeses and have sell-by dates between January and March 2026.

The cheese was distributed in 31 states, including Wisconsin, at stores like Target, Walmart, and Aldi. Great Lakes Cheese company makes cheese under a variety of labels, including Great Value, Good & Gather, and many more.

In a Dec. 3rd press release, Great Lakes Cheese said that its supplier of the mozzarella had notified the company in October that the cheese may contain foreign material. The company says it instructed retailers to remove the products from store shelves. “All recalled products have been removed from markets and replaced with new products. Further, the products currently on retail shelves are safe to consume and not associated with the October recall,” the release said.

You’ll want to check the FDA’s website for the full list of recalled cheese. If you have any of the recalled cheese, throw them away or bring it back to the store for a refund.

If eaten, the metal pieces could cause injury, according to the notice.
