MADISON, Wis. (CIVIC MEDIA) – Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul filed an amicus brief on Tuesday as part of a multi-state coalition that seeks to thwart the federal government’s attempt to deploy the National Guard in Chicago.

According to a Wisconsin Department of Justice news release, the brief was filed due to the coalition’s belief that the Trump administration had “unlawfully, unconstitutionally, and undemocratically” deployed the National Guard to Chicago.

An amicus brief is a legal document that is submitted by a party that has strong interest in the subject, but isn’t a direct party.

“Permitting a president to casually deploy the military in our cities —even where governors have objected — would be fundamentally inconsistent with our system of government and a striking departure from our history of respect for state sovereignty,” said Kaul in a statement. “The (U.S.) Supreme Court should permit the order blocking this deployment to stand.”

The document asks the nation’s high court to deny U.S. President Donald Trump’s request of a lower court order that blocked the deployment. The full brief can be viewed in full here.
