Week 6 HS football preview: Conference title and playoff races heat up in the WVC, BRC and other conferences
It’s already week 6 of the high school football season with teams targeting conference championships and playoff appearances throughout central Wisconsin. In the Wisconsin Valley Conference, after a tough start in the non-conference part of the schedule, D.C. Everest is looking to stay unbeaten in league at Eau Claire North. The Evergreens are 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the WVC with running back Corbin Enzenroth leading the way with 568 yards rushing the past three weeks. Eau Claire North (2-3 overall, 1-1 WVC) has won two straight games, including 24-21 at Eau Claire Memorial last week in a game the Huskies stopped the Abes just inches from the game winning touchdown as time expired.
The 2nd and 3rd places teams in the WVC will hit the field on Saturday as Wausau West (3-2 overall, 2-1 WVC) hosts SPASH (4-1, 2-0) in a game that will be broadcast on 98.9 WXCO. The Warriors have won all three of their home games this season, including last Friday’s 14-12 win over Wisconsin Rapids. The Panthers come off their first loss of the season, 24-14 at home vs. Hudson. Both teams have the capability of running and throwing effectively of offense and holding down their opponents on defense. Hear the game live starting with the pregame at 12:35 pm and kickoff at 1 pm Saturday on 98.9 WXCO, online at wxco.fm, mobile devices and Alexa by searching WXCO and on the Civic Media app.
Also in the WVC on Friday:
Marshfield (1-4, 1-1) @ Wisconsin Rapids (0-5, 0-3)
Eau Claire Memorial (0-5, 0-3) @ Menomonie (3-2, 1-2 GNC)
In the Great Northern Conference the surprising Tomahawk Hatchets will try to stay perfect and atop the league standings vs. Mosinee. Tomahawk comes off an impressive 49-7 win at Rhinelander last week where the Hatchets’ defense gave up no points as the Hodags’ only score came on a fumble return for a touchdown. Rex Reilly had 10.5 tackles to lead the Tomahawk defense while QB Cash Olsen had 143 yards passing, 2 TD & 68 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns. Tiegan Sarazin added 5 rushes for 131 yards and Jett Reilly 2 catches, 75 yards and a TD. Mosinee continues to be paced by two-way standout Treve Stoffel. In the 35-7 win last week vs. Wausau East, Stoffel had 17 rushes for 143 yards and a TD while hitting 7of 16 passes for 92 yards and 3 TD. Defensively Stoffel had 6.5 tackles and 1 interception vs. East.
Medford (2-3, 2-1) travels to Wausau East (1-4, 0-3) in a game that will be heard live on 98.9 WXCO. Medford kept their conference title hopes alive last week with a 20-18 win over previously undefeated Lakeland. East will try to stop a four game slide behind new starting QB Cam Rye. Rye has good offensive skill behind him with running back Iain Stahel, who has rushed for 375 yards this season, and wide receivers Kayden Meverden and Henry Maahs, who each have caught 16 passes this season. Medford at Wausau East will air tonight starting with the pregame at 6:35 pm on 98.9 WXCO, online at wxco.fm, mobile devices by searching WXCO and on the Civic Media app.
Also in the GNC, Merrill will try to extend their winning streak to three at Lakeland. Both teams are 2-1 in the conference while Merrill is 3-2 overall and Lakeland 4-1. Antigo (1-4, 0-3) is at Rhinelander (2-3, 1-2) to complete the GNC slate for this week.
