Wausau West, D.C. Everest, SPASH win WVC openers; Newman Catholic falls at Almond-Bancroft in Week 3 HS Football.

It was the first week of conference play in 11-player High School football in week 3. In the Wisconsin Valley Conference, in a game heard on 98.9 WXCO, Wausau West used a balanced offense to defeat Eau Claire North 35-21. West quarterback Joe Graveen threw for 162 yards and 3 touchdowns and added 61 yards rushing in the game. Two of the three touchdown passes went to tight end Shea Jones while Miles Waldvogel ran for 89 yards and a score and added 70 yards receiving and a touchdown. West blew the game open in the fourth quarter with a blocked punt that was then returned for a touchdown by Teagan Rasmus. West, now 2-1 overall, will return to action next Friday at D.C. Everest in another game that will be broadcast on 98.9 WXCO, wxco.fm, mobile devices by searching WXCO and Civic Media app starting with the pregame at 6:35 pm and kickoff at 7.

D.C. Everest earned their first win of the season Friday with a 41-6 win at Wisconsin Rapids. The Red Raiders drop to 0-3 overall. Stevens Point is now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the WVC after winning at Eau Claire Memorial 56-21. Quarterback Trent Breitbach had a monster night for the Panthers with 263 yards and 4 touchdowns passing along with 141 yards rushing and four more TD’s. Marshfield is now 0-3 overall after losing in a non-conference game 30-16 at unbeaten Rice Lake.

In the Great Northern Conference Tomahawk continues their outstanding start with an 11-10 win over Wausau East. Max Larson had 138 yards rushing on 19 attempts for the Hatchets and Rex Reilly made 12 tackles as Tomahawk moves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the league. The Lumberjacks are now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the GNC. Also in the GNC Mosinee edged Merrill 21-14. Treve Stoffel threw for 116 yards and a TD while rushing for 101 yards more and two scores. Merrill got 124 yards rushing on 19 carries from Kanin Jahnke. Mosinee is now 2-1 overall and Merrill drops to 1-2. Medford earns their first win of the season 51-18 at Antigo and Lakeland wins at Rhinelander 43-32 to stay unbeaten.

In 8-Player football, in a game heard on 98.9 WXCO, the Newman Catholic Cardinals drop to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the CW-8 after falling at Almond-Bancroft 20-13. The Cardinals will host Niagara next Friday at Balliet Field in a game that will be heard live on the Sports 2 Stream of wxco.fm and Civic Media app starting with the pregame at 6:40 pm and kickoff at 7.
