AG Kaul wins injunction against Trump Administration’s efforts to eliminate disaster mitigation program key to Wisconsin projects
WISCONSIN (CIVIC MEDIA) – Attorney General Kaul’s multistate coalition has won its lawsuit against the Trump Administration’s efforts to defund a key disaster mitigation program that is critical to several disaster prevention projects in Wisconsin.
A federal court has ordered that an injunction be put in place to halt the federal government’s actions, preserving billions of dollars for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program.
According to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), the court concluded that FEMA’s abrupt cancellation of the BRIC program was unlawful. The federal government’s actions through FEMA resulted in the sudden cancellation of dozens of Wisconsin projects, including Grant County tornado safe rooms and flood protection infrastructure along the Kickapoo River.
“Resources that are meant to help communities prepare to stay safe should be used for that purpose,” said Attorney General Kaul. “The Trump administration should not—and cannot lawfully—redirect this funding.”
The court order will prevent the Trump Administration from utilizing BRIC funds for other purposes. The coalition’s victory is the latest in a series of triumphs over the administration: Attorney General Kaul was previously successful in restoring key Wisconsin health and social programs that were impacted by the federal government’s actions. The full details of the court-ordered injunction can be found here.
