In a step that signals a break in party ranks, state Senator Chris Larson is urging Democratic Governor Tony Evers not to run for a third term next year.

In an interview on “The Maggie Daun Show” Wednesday, the Milwaukee County Democrat said he thinks there is a deep bench of fellow party members who could succeed Evers if he doesn’t seek another term.

“For our part, I would hope that Tony Evers does read the room and is ready to pass the baton to the next generation to be able to make sure that we actually have people who are ready to fight for our state,” he said.

Larson said he wanted Evers to step aside because of concerns about the governor’s priorities.

“I am not thrilled with what he is doing, and I think that there’s a lot of qualified people are going to step forward,” he said.

When asked if he was considering his own bid for the office, Larson didn’t answer the question.

Evers ran and won his gubernatorial bid in 2018. He won reelection in 2022. The next election is set for November 2026.
