MADISON, Wis (CIVIC MEDIA) – Attorney General Josh Kaul and several states have been granted a court order that will reverse the Trump Administration’s directives to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education.

According to a Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) news release, on Thursday, May 22, a federal judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a preliminary injunction against President Trump’s progress in shutting down the department. It restricts the administration from implementing mass layoffs and transferring management of federal student loans and special education functions outside the Department of Education’s bounds.

The court order also requires the department to reinstate federal employees who were relieved of their duties as part of Pres. Trump’s efforts.

U.S. District Court Judge Myong Joun cited the department’s inability to carry out its primary obligations due to staff reductions as the reason the injunction was put into place.

Attorney General Kaul celebrated the pivotal decision in a statement.

Today’s order preliminarily blocks the Trump administration’s sweeping and lawless attempt to gut the Department of Education,” said AG Kaul. “While this case is far from over, this ruling is a clear victory for students in Wisconsin.
