Pickleball is a Hit in Wisconsin with Players of All Ages

The pickleball craze is sweeping across Wisconsin. People of all ages and abilities are embracing the fun, fast-paced sport. It’s also a great way to stay active year-round. And whether you are a seasoned athlete or a beginner, pickleball offers something for everyone.

One example? Emerson Lehmann is WBAY TV’s morning anchor and an avid pickleball player. He recently shared his personal insights about the sport’s rise in popularity.

“It’s a super fun, fast-paced, high-energy game,” he explains. “The talent and skill level are growing, and the age of players continues to go down. It’s not just for grandparents anymore—it’s for everyone.”

Pickleball is best described as a hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It’s become one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S., and in Wisconsin, especially during the last five years. Lehmann believes pickleball is perfect for bringing people of all backgrounds and abilities together. 

“It scratches that competitive itch while fostering a real sense of community,” he says. “It also became a bonding experience for families, especially after the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Northeast Wisconsin, in particular, boasts a vibrant pickleball scene with a variety of courts and facilities available to enjoy year-round. Lehmann points out several dedicated venues, including Pickle and Bags in Oshkosh, Next Level Pickleball in Little Chute, and Pickleball Kingdom in Appleton. 

“There’s a group for everybody here,” he says. “Both high-level players and beginners alike have found a place to grow their skills.”

And add Mark Tauscher, a Wisconsin native and former Packers player to those considered avid pickleball enthusiasts. Tauscher recognized the sport’s popularity and decided to invest in a state-of-the-art venue for players of all skill levels.

“Pickleball is more than just a sport,” Tauscher says in a blog post for the Pickleball Professionals. “I’m thrilled to provide Ashwaubenon with a place where families, friends, and neighbors can connect, compete, and have fun.”

The Picklr facility features six indoor courts, professional equipment, and a welcoming atmosphere. There is open play, leagues, tournaments, and clinics to help newcomers learn the sport. 

If you are brand new to pickleball, both Tauscher and Lehmann suggest starting with a beginner class at any of the local facilities.

“It’s easy to dip your toe in, and if you like it, you can take it further. If not, you’ve still had a fun experience and got a little bit of activity,” Lehmann says. “Local parks also provide an informal way to get involved, with people often welcoming newcomers to join in their games.”

Pickleball is proving itself to be more than just a sport. It’s a movement bringing people together, keeping you active, and fostering a thriving community by creating connections and friendships along the way.
