Riverkings sweep Kernels
Over February 7 and 8, the Wisconsin Rapids Riverkings continued its march to the postseason as they swept the weekend series with Battle Creek with a pair of 2-1 victories.
The series marked the final road trip for the Riverkings in the regular season.
Rapids next plays on February 14 and 15 against Isanti at the South Wood County Recreation Center with puck drops at 7pm each night.
It was a return to glory and a continuation of dominance for the Wisconsin Rapids and Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards Wrestling teams over February 7 and 8.
The Papermakers won their first South Central Conference title since 2011-2012 in Boys Wrestling and won the first ever Girls title, while Rapids won its second consecutive Wisconsin Valley Conference crown, and 47th overall.
N/A/PE had three Boys champions, while having six Girls winners.
The Raiders finished with six champions on the day.
It has been a tough season for the Wisconsin Rapids Boys Basketball team, but on Friday, February 7, things got better.
Senior, Sean Roenius, tied a program record with 41 points as the Raiders won their first game of the season when they knocked off Division 2, No. 6-ranked Wausau East, 75-69.
The record was previously set by Dylan Lizitsa in 2018-2019 when he scored 41 points against D.C. Everest.
With winter waning and spring on the horizon, the playoffs in local sports are on the horizon.
Wrestling begins the tournament trail on Saturday, February 15, Girls Basketball brackets are released on Feb. 16, Boys Basketball brackets on Feb. 23, Gymnastics Sectionals from Feb. 27-March 1.
Hockey brackets were announced on February 9. Wisconsin Rapids earned a No. 11 seed and will play at sixth-seeded D.C. Everest on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
