Gov. Evers Unveils MPS Audit: Major Overhaul Needed for Wisconsin’s Largest District
MADISON, Wis – (Civic Media) — Gov. Tony Evers released the first of two independent audits of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) on Thursday, revealing significant operational challenges and proposing 29 recommendations for improvement.
The audit, conducted by MGT of America Consulting LLC, identifies three main goals for the district: creating a better functioning central system, enhancing communication and collaboration, and operating in a more fiscally responsible manner.
Recommendations include restructuring the central office, investing in human resources, and improving collaboration between the school board and district leadership.
Evers announced he will allocate about $3 million to help MPS begin implementing the audit’s recommendations immediately. He also plans to propose an additional $5 million in his 2025-27 budget for ongoing support, contingent on the district’s progress.
“This audit is a critical next step for getting MPS back on track and, ultimately, improving outcomes for our kids,” Evers said. “I urge and expect the district to take these recommendations seriously and move forward quickly with implementing this audit’s findings.”
The audit was ordered following MPS’s failure to submit required annual financial reports to the state Department of Public Instruction.
A second audit is ongoing and will be released upon completion.
