MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) — With questions about a lack of officers in schools, a major funding error, and a search for a new superintendent, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has set their focus on social media.

The district filed a lawsuit against social media platforms including Instagram, Google, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok, alleging the companies are harming students’ mental health. MPS claims the platforms are addictive and directly damaging children’s well-being.

A statement references the MPS role in mental health, saying “Milwaukee Public Schools has been directly harmed by Defendants’ conduct and is engaging in this litigation to protect itself and its students”

The district joins Kenosha Unified School Board and about 200 districts across the country in taking legal action against social media platforms.
