Wisconsin’s Supreme Court Race a Battle for the State’s Future

The state faces a critical election in April that could determine the balance of Wisconsin’s Supreme Court for the future. It’s also about a potential shift in power with consequences for the state’s legal landscape.

“Dane County judge Susan Crawford is emerging as the leading progressive candidate,” Kreitlow says as he introduces Crawford to listeners. “She has endorsements from the four sitting progressive justices, and is building a strong foundation for her campaign. Crawford’s Wisconsin roots and extensive legal experience make her a formidable contender. Raised in Chippewa Falls, she grew up with a strong sense of community and justice, values that have guided her throughout her career.”

“My legal journey began as an assistant attorney general with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, where I prosecuted serious felony cases and argued before the state’s highest courts,” Crawford explains. 

Her career also includes significant roles in state government, including serving as chief legal counsel to Governor Jim Doyle, where she played a key role in ensuring the fair application of the law across the state.

Crawford is hitting the campaign trail early, introducing herself to voters and emphasizing the importance of this election. 

“There are a few important elections on the ballot in November, no question,” she says. “But on the bright side, there are a lot of people with a lot of energy and enthusiasm who are really engaged right now. It’s creating opportunities for us to get out there and meet a lot of voters.”

“If a progressive candidate secures the seat, it would solidify the current majority, allowing for continued influence over the court’s direction,” Kreitlow says. “But conservatives are eyeing this opportunity to regain control of the court, and national right-wing groups are expected to pour significant resources into the race. Iff a conservative candidate wins, the court could tilt right, impacting decisions on everything from voting rights to environmental regulations.” 

Crawford’s campaign is focusing on her legal expertise, her commitment to justice, and her deep connections with Wisconsin. And Kreitlow calls this an election that will be closely watched, both in the state and across the nation.
