OSHKOSH, WI–(WGBW&WISS)– Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz announced this week that he is running for Winnebago County Executive. He is challenging County Executive Jon Doemel.

Doemel is seeking his second term in the April 2025 election. He was elected to County Executive in 2021 after he defeated 16-year incumbent Mark Harris.

A press release said Matz has been with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office for 34 years, the last 14 of which he has served as Sheriff. He also served in the military for 30 years. Matz is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and has a graduate certificate from the University of Virginia. He is also a National Sheriff’s Academy, FBI National Academy, and United States Army Sergeants Major Academy graduate.
