It’s the first week of the girls’ high school basketball season around Wisconsin with a mix of non-conference and conference match-ups on Thursday.

Under new head coach Lauren Bullis, D.C. Everest starts their season with a comeback 38-37 win at Appleton West. Kirsten Hall led the Evergreens with 11 points while Ailsa Chmielewski added 7. Everest trailed 19-12 at halftime before outscoring the Terrors 25-17 in the second half.

The return to the sidelines for Marshfield girls’ basketball coach Heidi Michaelis wasn’t as successful as her previous tenure. Michaelis, who had 305 wins in 17 seasons as Tigers coach before stepping away for six years, saw her team fall at Eau Claire North 57-49. Zaida Kolbeck had 20 points for Marshfield while McKenzie Holm scored 10.

Preseason WVC favorite Stevens Point started their season with a 50-37 nonconference win over Eau Claire Memorial. Lindsey Weiler scored 23 points for the Panthers while Jada Seubert added 15.

Another WVC team was victorious Thursday as Wisconsin Rapids evened their season record at 1-1 with a 52-27 win at Tomah.

In a Marawood-South conference game heard on 98.9 WXCO and 105.5 WIRI, Assumption showed why they are ranked among the top Division 5 teams in the state to start the season with a 67-22 win at Newman Catholic. The Royals scored the first 19 points of the game to take control early. Jordyn Jaglinski scored a 22 points while Addi Vollert added 15 as Assumption had four players in double figures. Sophomore Aubrey Puent had 11 points to lead the Cardinals.

Five teams in the Great Northern Conference played nonconference games on Thursday. Rhinelander won at Crandon 57-40, Medford also won on the road 53-38 at Chippewa Falls. Antigo edged Clintonville 58-56. Tomahawk started their season with a 42-35 win over Butternut and Northland Pines rolled past Mercer 56-27.

A pair of Central Wisconsin-North conference teams played on Thursday as Northland Lutheran lost their season-opener at Spencer 63-25. Also Gresham lost to Suring 45-27.

In the CWC-East it was a lot of nonconference action. Amherst bounced back from a big loss in their opener to Auburndale on Tuesday with a 55-26 win over Little Chute. Weyauwega-Fremont rolled past Rosholt 82-25, Iola-Scandinavia topped Wautoma 52-21, Menominee Indian fell to Oconto Falls 62-54, Manawa beat Wild Rose 61-51, and Bonduel came up short against St. Mary Catholic 50-37.

Also the Pacelli girls started their season with a 57-38 win over Greenwood.
